APA referencing in LaTeX using Overleaf

' src=

I’m now very used to the referencing style used in education journals (e.g. “according to Author (1999)”), to the point where the numbered style more commonly used in science (e.g. “according to [1]”) really annoys me!

This year I’m supervising three undergraduate projects, and I’ve asked them to use the APA style for referencing in their reports.

It took me a while to find a way of doing this in LaTeX that I was happy with, so to smooth the path for my students I shared this version of the project template, where I’d made all the necessary changes to implement APA style:

https://www.overleaf.com/read/yjkyzmpmkcdm

The key parts are as follows.

In the preamble:

At the end of the document:

And make sure to add references.bib to your project, with all the bibtex references. I’ve found Mybib.com a really useful tool for this, though I mainly use Zotero as my reference manager (and this can import easily into Overleaf).

This is very helpful! Thanks for sharing! Ulrich

very much useful

Thank you very much for this sir.

Thank you very much. It is very useful.

It’s interesting how our preferences for referencing styles can vary depending on our exposure and familiarity with different formats. It sounds like you’ve become quite accustomed to the style commonly used in education journals, where authors are referenced by their names and publication years. The APA style, with its specific guidelines for citations and references, is certainly a popular choice in academia and provides a structured approach to citing sources. It’s great that you’ve introduced your undergraduate students to the APA style for their project reports, as it will help them develop important academic skills and adhere to established conventions in their field.

Guide to Writing Your Thesis in LaTeX

Step 2: download the template files.

Now that both LaTeX and an appropriate editor are available, you will need the files that are specific to the University of Rhode Island thesis/dissertation format.

Download the template

Download the archive thesis.zip , then extract it somewhere on your system.

What the Template Consists of

The downloaded zip archive contains nine files. Four of these files are style files which define the structure of the thesis and ensure that it conforms to the Graduate School’s Guidelines for the Format of Theses and Dissertations . In general, these style files should not need to be modified, they just need to be in the same directory as your main .tex file. These files are:

  • urithesis.cls – the main LaTeX class
  • uribib.bst – the style for the bibliography
  • uriref.bst – the style for the list of references in IEEE format, like [3]
  • uriapa.bst – the style for the list of references in APA format, like (Toolan, 2006)

The template also contains some example files to get you started. You will need to edit these files while writing your thesis, and add some additional files as well, but in their current form they will produce this thesis . These files are:

  • thesis.tex – the top level .tex file, and the only file that LaTeX is run on
  • abstract.tex – an example of the preliminary material
  • chapter1.tex – an example chapter
  • references.bib – an example bibliographic database
  • thesisbib.tex – a dummy file for generating the bibliography (never edit or include this file)

  1. APA 7th edition in Latex by using the natbib and apacite

The takeaway from the answer to the linked question is that apacite currently can only give you 6th-ed. APA style. (And as Alan commented above, you should load \usepackage{apacite} to properly use apacite.)If you need 7th-ed. APA style, the only LaTeX-based solution at the moment is a current version of biblatex-apa (which will likely require small changes to your workflow).

  4. How to use APA7 referencing?

With your packages, I don't really know. The package that I use for APA 7 citations is: \usepackage{csquotes} \usepackage[style=apa, backend=biber, sortcites, url=true]{biblatex} \addbibresource{bibliografia.bib} % this is your BibLatex. If you're using a Latex Editor, it should support Biber.

Therefore, if you intend to submit a manuscript to an APA journal, I strongly recommend using the apa6 class. This part is not handled by the apa6 class, but by the apacite package. apacite can be
