• Title of the project: It should be brief yet comprehensive and reflect the essence of your research work.
• Author/Student’s name: It is essential to mention the name of the author/student who has carried out the research work. This will help in identifying the author of the document.
• Roll number/Student number: This is an important identifier that helps the institute maintain the record of the students.
• Department/Batch/Class: This information helps the institute to categorize the research work based on the department, batch, or class.
• Institution’s name: It is important to mention the name of the institute where the research work has been conducted.
• Details of the requirements: Mentioning whether it is a thesis, final-year project, or dissertation is crucial for the reader to understand the context of the research work.
• Name of the degree: Mentioning the name of the degree (Ph.D. or M.Phil.) will help in identifying the level of the research work.

The title page (or cover page) of your thesis, dissertation, or research paper should contain all the key information about your document. It usually includes:

A typical example of a thesis title page looks like this:

The title page of your thesis or dissertation should include your name, department, institution, degree program, and submission date.

The title page of your thesis or dissertation goes first, before all other content or lists that you may choose to include.

Usually, no title page is needed in an MLA paper . A header is generally included at the top of the first page instead. The exceptions are when:

• Your instructor requires one, or
• Your paper is a group project

In those cases, you should use a title page instead of a header, listing the same information but on a separate page.

The dissertation template is provided as a Google Doc. You can download it in MS Word format or make a copy to your Google Drive. You’re also welcome to convert it to whatever format works best for you, such as LaTeX or PDF.

What types of dissertations/theses can this template be used for?

The template follows the standard best-practice structure for formal academic research projects such as dissertations or theses, so it is suitable for the vast majority of degrees, particularly those within the sciences.

Some universities may have some additional requirements, but these are typically minor, with the core structure remaining the same. Therefore, it’s always a good idea to double-check your university’s requirements before you finalise your structure.

Will this work for a research paper?

Is this template for an undergrad, Masters or PhD-level thesis?

This template can be used for a dissertation, thesis or research project at any level of study. It may be slight overkill for an undergraduate-level study, but it certainly won’t be missing anything.

How long should my dissertation/thesis be?

This depends entirely on your university’s specific requirements, so it’s best to check with them. As a general ballpark, Masters-level projects are usually 15,000 – 20,000 words in length, while Doctoral-level projects are often in excess of 60,000 words.

The Dissertation Title Page

The title page of your dissertation or thesis conveys all the essential details about your project, including:

• The title of your project
• Your full name (including student number if required)
• Clarification of whether this is a dissertation or thesis document
• The name of your academic department
• The name of your university
• The degree name that the dissertation or thesis has been written for (e.g. Doctor of Philosophy)
• The date (month and year) that you will submit the document
• The name of your supervisor(s)

This page can also be referred to as the dissertation cover page when your degree program is at the undergraduate or Masters level.

Format of the Title Page

Your university will provide you with the exact formatting requirements of your dissertation title page. This will include how to present the above information but also the font size to use, line spacing and the size of margins. For example, a graduate school may require the title to be in all caps, all text to be double-spaced and margins on the binding side to be 4cm. Don’t include the page number and have all text centred. You may also need to include the university logo. The APA style is commonly referred to for guidance on how to format research documents. This guide from University College London on their requirements is also an interesting read.

Example of a Dissertation Title Page

The example below is what a dissertation title page would usually look like for a Masters degree project in the UK. You can use this as a template when writing your own title page. The format presented here is also applicable for a doctoral dissertation or thesis title page.

The title page may be followed by an approval page, signed by the project chair and any other committee members. After this comes your abstract, presented on a separate page and then your table of contents. Some institutions may also require a copyright page to be included. Whilst the title page doesn’t have a page number, pages after this may use Roman numerals with the traditional page number format starting after your table of contents.

The term partial fulfillment means that this research document was one of several requirements for you to obtain your degree. For a Master’s degree, the other requirements will typically include exams and coursework.

How To Write Dissertation Title Page in 2024

The title page of a dissertation (also called dissertation cover page) is what an evaluator or a reader looks at first in your dissertation. It forms their first impression of your dissertation. The dissertation title page contains all the relevant information about a dissertation. The look of the title pages may vary from university to university, but they generally follow certain common elements. Let’s look at what a dissertation title page should have in this article.

What to include in a dissertation title page?

1. title of the dissertation.

The title page or cover page of your dissertation may form the first impression upon the reader, but the catch is going to be the title of your dissertation. The importance of the title of your dissertation cannot be stressed enough. You could write one of the most original and thought-provoking dissertations, but a vague title that doesn’t do justice to it could undermine its whole scope.

The title of your dissertation should clearly indicate to the reader what to expect. It should have the following qualities:

• It should be clear and objective. It should not be too confusing and should be indicative of rigorous and direct academic language.
• It could even be creative as long as it contains a subtitle that explains it. Subtitles are often an integral part of most dissertations as they provide more room to explain what your dissertation is about.
• Use of keywords highlighting the core arguments, scope, or the purpose of your dissertation.
• Your dissertation title should not be too lengthy or too short.

A reader (or your evaluator) would be satisfied if the following questions are answered by your dissertation title:

Does it highlight the purpose or goal of the study?

Is the context clear from the title, does it indicate or hint at the outcome of the study or is it open-ended, is the research strategy mentioned clearly.

Here is an example of one of the popular dissertation titles in English:

The Influences of the Holy Bible on Milton: A detailed analysis of Paradise Lost and redemption poetry in the 17 th  century.

As you can see, all the above-mentioned 4 points are answered in this dissertation title. This title clearly indicates that the biblical influence on Milton’s poetry is the goal of the study. The context as the title says lies with redemption poetry and Paradise Lost . The outcome would indicate the influence of the Holy Bible on Milton as a poet. Moreover, the research strategy can be gathered from the “detailed analysis” part, which tells us that it is an analytical dissertation.

Ultimately there is no right way to title your dissertation —you can be creative or rigid with your titles as long as it conveys something worthwhile.

2. Author Information

This is the part that comes after the title of your dissertation . The title page sheds light on the researcher, their qualifications as well as affiliations. This tells the reader of the qualifications of the author who has written the dissertation.

Most universities provide a style guide according to which students can format their title page. These are the usual additional information that the university expects students to include on the title page.

4. How to format your dissertation title page?

If the university has provided you with some formatting guidelines, you can format your title page according to that. Most dissertations follow APA or AMA writing style and the title page can be formatted accordingly.

a) APA Dissertation Title Page

• Capitalize the first letters of the title and the subtitles.
• The title should ideally be 12 words in length.
• The first-page number should generally appear at the top-right corner of the page.
• The font size should be Times New Roman, with the size 12 pt., and should be double spaced.
• Articles, propositions, and other words having less than three letters should not be capitalized (e.g., “and,” “of” and “the” are not capitalized in the dissertation titles.
• Double quotation marks are used.
• Numbers below 10 are spelled out. Numerical is used when the numbers are above 10.In hyphenated compounds, the first letters of both components are capitalized.

b) AMA Dissertation Title Page

• In AMA, the title, author name(s), institution name, abstract, and keywords are placed in the center alignment of the upper half of the page.
• Doubling spacing is to be followed and any content on the page should not be bold or italicized.
• Author’s first name to be followed by the last name after the title.
• Page number starts at 1 on the title page, in the upper right-hand corner.
• Font style should be either Times New Roman or Serif Type.
• First letters of the title and subtitle should be capitalized.
• Articles, propositions, and conjunctions are not capitalized

Q1. do i need to add the page number to the title page.

This totally depends on the formatting requirements of your university. If your dissertation follows APA and AMA style guides, it is prescribed that you number the title page as the first page of your dissertation. The page number is usually put on the top right corner of the title page.

Q2 . Can I put a picture on the title page?

Mostly, for dissertations , pictures are not added to the title page. It is always a good idea to keep your title page simple and clear so that it doesn’t confuse your reader at the first glance. That being said, if you feel a picture is reflective of your entire dissertation or thesis or adds on to the title, then you can always seek permission from your university before doing this.

Q3. Do I need to list committee members on the title page?

You don’t have to list the committee members on the title page unless the university has particularly asked you to do that. You can check the formatting requirements of the university style guide before making a decision.

Q 4. Is a copyright section necessary on the title page?

No. It is generally assumed that the dissertation is the intellectual property of the author. You only have to worry about this if you plan to publish your dissertation for a wider audience, otherwise, it is completely fine. However, sometimes certain universities ask their students to have a copyrights page in a different page than the title page.

The title page or the cover page is an important part of your dissertation . It is the first page anyone chancing upon your dissertation notices.  Therefore, your title page needs to look perfect. You should also ensure that the title page is formatted well and fits in with the rest of your dissertation. Many universities specify the formatting requirements for the same and if those are not mentioned, you could always follow the general rules most dissertations follow as we have outlined above. Word or LaTeX?

LaTeX is extensively used by engineers and scientists because it handles maths and equations brilliantly, and by linguists because it can cope with multiple (and obscure) languages.  The University now offers Professional Accounts via Overleaf. Sign up for an account via the University of Southampton portal .

Word is the most widely used word processing software in the university. Unless you will be including lots of special character sets or equations, we would recommend using Word.

Copyright Statement coversheet

All e-theses require the University thesis copyright statement  is included in front of the main title page in the final e-version submitted.  The wording of the statement should not be altered in any way. 

The Word template (PC or Mac) above has the statement included but earlier versions did not. Should the statement be missing from your file it should be:

• added before creating the final pdf version 
• located in front of the main title page using the document below 
• should not be included in the numbering of the thesis.

LaTeX templates currently do not include instruction on how to add the statement so it will need it to be added individually as a single double-sided page. Alternatively, add the pdf version into your final pdf file using Adobe Acrobat Pro.

The statement is not required in the print copies submitted for examination or as a final copy.

How to make sure your thesis is an archival PDF/A

Your final University e-thesis must submitted in an accessible and archival format so that it will be readible in years to come, currently this format is PDF/A-3 .

• Mac users If you are using Word for Mac then start by using the Save As PDF facility. This produces a really good baseline file to continue working on in Adobe Acrobat Pro DC. If for any reason you are not happy with the output as this process, then try converting the file by using Adobe Acrobat Pro's own 'Create a PDF from'. If you are still not happy with the result then contact serviceline to discuss other options.
• PC users For PC users the Adobe Acrobat Pro DC facility will produce the best output. You'll find the steps below under the heading  Create the PDF for PC  below.
• LaTeX to PDF/A-3 If you are using Overleaf, the automatic pdf conversion will be create a PDF/A file. Overleaf have created instructions on how to make sure your LaTeX PDF conforms to the archival standards . Please note we would prefer that you chose a-3b (propritising display) or a-3u (prioritising searchability) rather than a-1b. You may find the following paper helpful: Moore, R. (2014). Adding Page Numbers

Again, please remember that our template (available on the Main Page of this Guide ) has all of this already built in.

Page Numbers are placed in the footer of your document, which is a shared space among all your pages. Anything you put in the footer will appear on all pages of your document, though you can also use Breaks to divide your document into different sections. This is how we get small Roman numerals in the front matter section, and Arabic numerals in the rest of the document, for example.

You edit the headers and footers by double clicking in the space in which they appear on the document. When you are finished editing, you can get back to the rest of your document by clicking the  Close Header and Footer button in the  Header Design  Ribbon.

Microsoft Word provides you with the option of selecting a numbering style (e.g. “Roman Numeral”, “Arabic”) and gives you the option of selecting the “starting at” number.  You can set the page numbers for your entire document, or if you need more control, you can do it section-by-section as well.

If you want continuous pagination that is all in the same format, go to the Insert Ribbon, and in the Header & Footer Group , click on the Page Number icon. Choose the appropriate placement of the number and a style.

If you are writing a Rackham dissertation, you have somewhat more complicated pagination. For example, Rackham’s guidelines require that the page numbers begin on the third or fourth page of your document (depending on if you include a graphical frontispiece) and the page number on that page should be Roman numeral “ii”. Page numbering should continue on in Roman numerals until the first page of Chapter 1 is reached.  At that point, the numbering should restart in Arabic (“1, 2, 3…”). Rackham requires that all of your page numbers be placed at the bottom center of your pages.

The following instructions demonstrate numbering a dissertation document according to Rackham’s guidelines.  These steps assume you are including a title page, a copyright page, dedication and acknowledgements and other front matter, and then the body of your dissertation.

• Put your cursor before the first letter of “Dedication” or whatever is the first thing that comes after your copyright page.
• On the Page Layout Ribbon, in the Page Setup Group , click on the arrow next to the Breaks icon () and select Next Page under the Section Breaks section.
• If you turn on the paragraph markers, you should now see a section break on the previous page.
• Put your cursor before the first letter of your first chapter and repeat steps 2 and 3.

You have just separated your dissertation into sections. If you want to see what section you are working in, on the left end of Status Bar (at the bottom of your Word document), Word tells you what page you are on, how many words are in your document, which section you are in, and so on.

If you don’t see the section information, right-click on the Status Bar, and select Section in the menu that appears.

Step 2: Breaking the Connection Between Sections

Breaking the Connection Between Sections

By default, the headers and footers of each section are connected to those of the sections before and after it.  Therefore, if you want different page number styles to vary from one section to the next (such as Roman or Arabic), you’ll need to break the connection between the sections. Particularly with landscaped pages, it is often helpful to break the connection in the header as well as in the footer.

• Put your cursor on the first page that needs the Roman numeral.
• On the Insert Ribbon, in the Header & Footer Group , click on the arrow under the Footer icon and select Edit Footer .
• You should now be in the footer of that page; in the Header & Footer Tools Design Ribbon , in the Navigation Group , unlink this section’s footer from previous sections’ footer by clicking the highlighted Link to Previous icon.
• Put your cursor in the header area, and again click the highlighted Link to Previous icon.
• Scroll down to the first page of the body of your dissertation (the chapters), make sure your cursor is in the footer, and click the highlighted Link to Previous icon again.

You have now successfully unlinked footers of these sections. Any page numbers you put in the body of your document will not affect the page numbering of your front matter, and vice versa.

Step 3: Adding the Page Numbers

• Scroll up to the section that contains your front matter and click in the footer of any page (don’t do anything for your title page and other pages that don’t require a page number).
• On the Insert Ribbon, in the Header & Footer Group , click on the arrow next to the Page Number icon and select the positioning you’d like.  Generally, Bottom of the Page is the choice, and either Plain Number 2 (centered) or Plain Number 3 (right aligned).
• To change to Roman Numerals, on the Insert Ribbon, in the Header & Footer Group , click on the arrow next to the Page Number icon and select Format Page Numbers… to set the “start at” number and the style of numbering.
• Scroll down to the first page of the next section (where your chapters start) and click in the footer.

Handing in your dissertation/project

You should submit online.  Dissertation/project must have a cover sheet as the first page (see below).

Important:  You should make additional copies for yourself - to show sponsors, potential employers etc.

Ethical Review

All students should consider the ethical implications of their project, following the ethical guidelines , and should obtain ethical approval if necessary.

Word length

The dissertation should be no longer than 12,000 words (9,000 words for MSc Management for Information Technology) including any quotations in the text, but excluding the abstract, footnotes, tables and their captions, the bibliography and appendices. All extensive listings of data etc should be included as appendices. Program code can also be included as an appendix but we would prefer it to be uploaded electronically via Canvas, or on a USB drive or similar attached to each copy of the dissertation.

Complete and sign the cover sheet. It includes a declaration stating that you have read and understood the definitions of 'plagiarism' and 'collusion' as set out in the Examination and Assessment Handbook . Warning: if your dissertation is subsequently found to contain material that has been plagiarised, or to be a product of collusion with another student, you risk failing your MSc.

Suggested format

General structure: Title Page, Abstract, Acknowledgements, Table of Contents, Chapter 1, Chapter 2 ....Chapter N, References, Appendices.

For the main body of the dissertation, use a proportional font. For program code, a monospaced font is advised.
