Safaris through wildlife reserves are a thrill ride. Now, the popularity of walking safaris is growing, and these are more thrilling than ever before. Along with the thrill comes a heightened amount of danger. While most lions flee from people, even while you're on foot, an attack is always a possibility. Knowing how to react ahead of time could save your life. [1] X Research source

Standing Your Ground

Step 1 Do not panic.

  • Lion behaviors differ from region to region. The biggest tourist attractions have lions that are more habituated to vehicles and therefore less afraid of humans. However, many lions with early encounters of humans will perform mock charges. Making yourself appear threatening will make them turn away.

Step 3 Retreat slowly.

  • Avoid retreating to a thicket (such as a forest). Instead, retreat to an open area.

Step 4 Be prepared again.

Fighting the Attack

Step 1 Remain standing.

Avoiding an Attack

Step 1 Stay away from mating lions.

Expert Q&A

Tips from our readers.

  • Use your forearm and jam it as far as you can down the lion's mouth to prevent them from biting down with full force. Use this moment to go for the lion's eyes. Once they're hurt, the lion may back off.
  • Try to show the lion that you aren't a threat. Stand with your side facing the lion and avoid eye contact. Look at the lion's feet because they can indicate what the lion will do next.
  • Lions might be able to climb trees, so if you encounter one, try not to climb up a tree to escape.
  • Do not play dead! If you do, you will actually end up dead. Thanks Helpful 5 Not Helpful 0
  • Do not kill, hunt or shoot a lion. Lions are a threatened species. Thanks Helpful 3 Not Helpful 1

About This Article

To survive a lion attack, stand your ground while waving your hands and shouting to make you appear more threatening. Next, back away slowly as you continue to flail your arms and shout so that the lion doesn’t sense your fear. Additionally, try to retreat to an open area instead of a thicket or forest where the lion could follow you. If that doesn’t work and the lion charges, attempt to remain standing so you can fight back. Then, aim punches or kicks at the lion’s head or eyes to turn the lion off and scare it away. For tips on how to stay calm when you encounter a lion, keep reading. Did this summary help you? Yes No

Lion survival guide: how to survive a lion attack.

Updated by Editorial Staff

In the last survival guide we published, we talked about how to survive a horse attack , now we’re going to talk about how to survive a lion attack. Encountering one of these beasts on a hunting or camping expedition could change your life. Let’s make sure it’s a good change leaving you with an awesome story to tell.

You are fulfilling the dream of your life doing a wonderful Safari in Africa with your family, an incredible experience that is definitely worth living at least once in your life. However, traveling to the cradle of humanity and the only place where we can still find hundreds of species of wild animals living in total freedom is not without risk, Africa is beautiful but that does not make it any less dangerous for inexperienced tourists.

The truth is that it is quite dangerous to travel to this country without a guide or a specialized expedition group to tell us which are the safest places where we can walk and take pictures without the danger of coming face to face with a lion that has just woken up from a nap. Because yes, although it may sound like a joke, it is possible to come across a lion while walking calmly and happily through the savannah, in fact there are already several known cases of tourists who were disoriented and ended up being attacked by a lion that was in the area looking for something to put in its mouth.

And that is precisely what we want to talk to you about today, the importance for tourists to know what to do and what not to do if they are unlucky enough to come across a lion that will surely be eager to bite them. Because I’m sorry to tell you that of all the animals you might encounter while on safari in Africa, the lion is the one you have the least chance of living with. And there is a reason why the lion is considered the king of the savannah: it is fast, has enormous strength and reflexes and, unfortunately for us, it is carnivorous. This means that a lost tourist without too much cunning fits perfectly into its diet, even if only as a dessert.

Therefore, if you are planning a trip to Africa and you want to be prepared for any unforeseen event, such as coming across a hungry wild lion, we will give you a series of key tips with which you can face this complicated situation and have more chances of getting out unscathed (or practically unscathed) and then be able to tell in your own words how you faced a lion and managed not to get eaten. And where human ingenuity does not reach, there is the Internet, always ready to give us extra information to be prepared to face any unforeseen event.

Table of Contents

Can a human really survive a lion attack?

The first question you will have to answer before learning the basic survival techniques for a lion attack is this: can you really survive such an event? And you will think that it is absurd to have to solve this question, because whatever your answer is in the end what will determine your destiny is the luck you have at the moment you meet the lion or your level of cunning. And yes, both aspects play a crucial role in your survival but there is something else even more important to take into account: the power of your mind, because believing you are capable of doing something is the first step to get to do it.

So, when asked if there is any chance for a human to actually survive a lion attack, we have good news for you: yes, it is possible to survive a lion attack without any help and there are real statistics to prove it. In fact, the exact number of lion encounters that have had a happy ending is currently around 40%, all of these being cases where tourists or locals accidentally came across a lion and chose not to move or desperately try to defend themselves.

Therefore, based on this hopeful fact we are going to explain some of the best tricks with which you can also achieve it and get out safe and sound of one of the most terrifying situations that could happen to you in your life. Take note, breathe calmly and memorize everything we are going to tell you because it could save your life.

How To Survive a Lion Attack

Step 1. don’t run and be brave in front of the lion.

This first tip may seem easier said than done, because who wants to stand still while a lion stares at them and approaches them? No one, of course. But believe me when we tell you that the best thing to do the first moment you realize you have a lion in front of you is to stand still. Don’t panic and above all, don’t turn your back.

A lion is a feline and as such the first thing it will do before attacking is to analyze its prey and determine whether or not it is really worth attacking. Therefore, the more still you stay and the more fixed you keep your eyes on it, the better you will do. We even recommend that you make a sound, a sort of muffled cry that can serve as a warning and that the lion can interpret as a threat. If the lion sees that you can defend yourself and that you are not easy to intimidate, he will think much more about it and the chances of him ruling out attacking you will multiply.

On the other hand, running away is not a smart option either since the lion is an animal capable of running 50 miles per hour. Do you think you could outrun it? Not even the fastest man on the planet, which is able to run about 22 km per hour, could do it, so you better not even try because you will only end up being hunted in less time and with much less chance of response. Listen to us and don’t run, because you will only end up dying tired.

Stand firm, even if inside you are dying of fear, because that cold blood can save your life.

Step 2. Analyze the lion’s movements

As we explained in the previous point, a lion when it comes to hunting behaves in the same way as a domestic cat, so there will be certain movements that you can interpret to better know what the lion is thinking of doing and what its attitude is to your unexpected encounter.

For example, when the lion has identified a prey and is totally determined to go after it, it will not move an inch from where it is and neither will its tail. If you notice that its tail is totally stiff and raised, you may fear for your life because the lion sees you as easy prey and is ready to attack at a moment’s notice.

If, on the other hand, you observe that the lion moves from side to side and its tail is relaxed but making smooth movements, it means that it is annoyed but it is not sure what to do with you. At this signal you should move away slowly and do not make him more angry, use his indecision to move to the side gently is a good strategy for the lion to get bored of you and let you go.

Finally, if the lion’s tail is all the way down and it barely moves, that lion will almost certainly not attack you. Of course, the lion will watch you and analyze everything you do, so you will have to remain very still while it does it so that its mood does not change, but if it remains relaxed and does not see you as prey or as a real threat, the lion will leave. And you can breathe easy while you go back to your loved ones to tell them what happened to you.

Step 3. Permanent visual contact

This tip is already implicit in the two previous ones but it is so important that we are going to give it its own space. Felines use their eyes to interpret their prey, so we will have to act like them to let them know that we are not going to give up and that we are not an easy prey for them.

The look of a lion is terrifying, we know that and we know that it is difficult to keep your gaze fixed and serene while you hear him growling, but it is a very good strategy to communicate with him and let him see that attacking you is not a good idea. Permanent eye contact, don’t forget.

Step 4. Wave your arms and back away slowly

This is the last step to carry out and you can only do it if all the others have worked and the lion has not made any attempt to attack you: start taking small steps backwards (without turning around, always facing the lion and keeping your eyes on him) and keep waving your arms in wide open movements. In this way, you will look bigger and the lion will move back more and will not try to attack you because it feels you more as a threat than as a prey to be eaten.

Step 5. Stand still in any circumstance

We know that in the last steps we told you that you could move gently backwards to start moving away from the lion, but this is only valid if the lion has not made any attacking movement towards you. If the lion starts making charges, usually always zig zagging, you should stand completely still and wait.

Most charges are simulated and if you stand still and show no weakness the lion will not continue to run at you. Therefore, even if you see the lion start to move dangerously towards you, do not move an inch. It is vital.

Step 6. Protect your neck and use your arms as a shield

Finally, if the lion has finally decided to attack (which would be very bad news for you but does not have to mean the end for you) we recommend that when it lunges at you you stay stiff, protecting your neck as much as you can and using your arms as a shield so that you can’t reach your head easily. An arm or leg injury is preferable, your chances of survival are higher with a bite to the end than to the neck or head, so don’t hesitate to defend yourself as much as you can.

Finally, if you feel strong enough, try to punch the lion in the face, right between the eyes. This is a very sensitive area for felines and this will stun it enough for you to escape in the opposite direction. If the lion senses that you have become a threat and doesn’t want to waste any more time with you, it will leave. It’s better to try than do nothing.

Final Thoughts

In conclusion, learning how to survive a lion attack in the wild will very likely not prevent you from getting life-altering damage or death. But knowing what to do could save your life. Prevention and having the right survival gear such as first aid supplies is crucial.

Jojolion volumes 1-2 (version 2).

how to make a jojo reference when attacked by a lion

Ooookay! And now finally, he we are, the last one of these releases. For those that haven’t been keeping track, we’ve been making our way through the volumes redoing the magazine versions with better raws over the course of the last few years now because we didn’t have the resources to do it when the volumes had just come out. Though we did previously do volumes 1-2 at one point, this is an updated version that improves those releases and brings the quality up to the level of our other Jojolion volume releases. This version has the best versions of the color pages I could find with and without the insert texts from the magazine, all the pages are properly sized so the single pages are the same width, all the sound effects are typeset, all the text is updated to our current typesetting style, and I also went through the translation and tried to improve it where that was possible. Generally speaking that just involved trying to make the phrasing sound more natural and fixing a couple super-minor mistakes from back in 2014 when we first did these. They use the same cleans as last time though as those were already good.

With that, I think we’re all done with JoJolion. It’s been a verrrry long journey. We did 27 volumes in both magazine and volume versions (The first 8 chapters were only ever done with volume versions but the rest we did twice. But technically we redid those again in this release. And I think we’ve technically released chapter 9 three times now if you count the magazine one.) And now I think the work is finally complete. We may go back and fix something if a mistake or something is found, but otherwise I think that’s it. We’re not gonna do something like re-release chapters with textless high-res versions of color pages from new art books or redo everything if some sorta collector’s edition with better quality paper comes out. I think for those things it’s better to just encourage people to seek out the artbooks/re-releases on their own rather than re-update releases years after the fact for something like that. Otherwise we’re spending tons and tons of time just re-doing stuff when we could be doing something new. And I think everyone’s pretty happy with what we’ve put out now. I hope you all enjoy it, JoJolion is a great series!

We’ll see you in Part 9, whenever that starts!

Also, we have a new Discord! Come hang out and talk about manga. https://discord.gg/fxrmZufp

JoJolion Volume 3 & Volume 27

how to make a jojo reference when attacked by a lion

Bwaaaah we did it! Here are our HQ releases of volume 3 and volume 27! And with that, we’ve released volume versions of all of JoJolion. We finally did it after a very long period of working out way back through the old volumes from when the newest volume was volume 15 back in 2017. I’m very happy about this as this was a ton of work from a ton of people. Volume 3 should be much improved from the magazine versions we did back when they came out in like 2013-ish. Volume 27 is mostly just the high-res volume version but there’s also a couple extra pages between chapters and at the end (Though it doesn’t change the story really.)

So right now the plan is we’re still going to do a *slightly* updated version of volumes 1 and 2 which have a few fixes to be in line with our modern style. They’ll have fixed widths for the single pages, added in the other color pages they were missing, have the sound effects added, and I’ll fix any translation issues I find from when I did those back in 2014 and 2015. But they’re not gonna change a TON, we’re gonna use the same scans/cleans. Those are done besides the typesetting/lettering part. Anyhow I hope you all enjoy these!

(Also we can’t put these on Mangadex still because you can’t update them with new pages. We’ll put them there along with like 30 other things like this whenever that goes up.)

JoJolion Volume 4

Whew, so here’s our HQ version of volume 4. There’s just one volume left which we don’t have a volume version for left and that’s 3. And then we’re gonna redo v1 and v2 to be more in-line with our current styles and have all the sound effects and all that. I said this on the other volumes, but they’re all done except for the last step which is the typesetters going through them and updating the fonts, which they can only do when they’re free from other stuff they got going on. So those’ll definitely get done at some point. Again, the series is on hiatus until whatever JOJOLANDS is comes out and volume 27 comes out next month. (Also we still can’t upload this to Mangadex until they allow editing chapter pages again.) See ya later!

JoJolion 110 (End)

how to make a jojo reference when attacked by a lion

And this is it! The final chapter! We’ve now officially scanlated all of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 8 – JoJolion! Volume 27 comes out next month and we’ll do a high quality version using the raws for that once it does. Our HQ versions of volumes 1-4 are almost done, I’m gonna see if there’s any way to get them finished up sooner because it’s really been dragging on longer than I want.

There’s no… uh… Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure next issue. As you might’ve heard by now because it’s been going around Twitter, in a comment at the end of the magazine in the Table of Contents by Araki says the next thing he’s doing is tentatively called “JOJOLANDS”. Which is probably Part 9, unless it’s some totally different thing. But he says he’s taking a small break before that starts. The plan for now is for us to just continue on to that part, assuming we still have enough staff to do it and nothing else unexpected happens. But I’ve been working on this series for a long time and I dunno if I can do it forever because Araki is immortal and Jojo’s will possibly never end. ANYHOW we’ll figure that out once more is announced. Enjoy this final chapter!

JoJolion 109

how to make a jojo reference when attacked by a lion

109! Also it looks like next month Jojolion concludes. It’s been quite a 10 years. Next month is on the usual release day of the 19th in Japan so we’ve got a bit of a longer wait than usual because this month’s was super early for some reason (Maybe to do with the Olympics starting next week? We dunno really.)

We’re still trying to get the last few of the old volumes done, hopefully we can get them out soon. We’ve been trying to figure out a plan for that so it doesn’t take so long.

Oh I should also mention that seemingly there is no 3-Gatsu no Lion chapter in the next Young Animal (So that’s two in a row without one that hasn’t happened in a while). So the next chapter may not be until August 13th Japan time at the earliest.

JoJolion 108

how to make a jojo reference when attacked by a lion

Here ya go everybody, 108. Jojolion now officially has as many chapters as Death Note. Uh, so the series may end soon but we dunno when. So let’s just keep going, however many more chapters are left. We’re working on getting the HQ volume 4 done in the meantime. See ya next month!

JoJolion Volume 26

how to make a jojo reference when attacked by a lion

Here it is! 26. This volume came out not too long ago so I’m glad we were able to get it done pretty quick this time. We’re working on the handful of old volumes still, and hopefully we get the next one out in not too long. Again, they need to be completely re-lettered which our letterers can only do in their free time.

I feel like I should mention here that I updated a few lines regarding the “invisible spin bubbles” from these chapters because now we know what they actually are (I updated them a bit ago and reuploaded the magazine versions but these have those changes, too). The issue was when they were first introduced we didn’t have any context, so it wasn’t clear if “その中に” meant “inside” or “among”, a lot of lines were said in a way where it was hard to tell if they were clarifying something or introducing a new idea… it’s all kind of hard to explain if you don’t know Japanese. It wasn’t fully clear until like chapter 105 when we got the full explanation.

But basically the end result is there’s just two “types” of bubbles. There’s the original ones at Jousuke’s fingertips which he can fire and the invisible ones that defy logic, are “just spin”, and appear from the mark on his shoulder that he can’t control. There’s nothing inside them, Mamezuku Rai was saying that the special invisible bubbles are “among” the other bubbles. They’re both made of spinning lines, but for the second type of bubbles they are “just spin” and have no physical “cords” that are spinning (Which the originals have). Anyhow those bubbles gave me a real headache and sorry about the confusion.

Anyyyhow check this out in the much-higher-resolution glory.

JoJolion 106

And we’re back with 106! Uh, so the manga did not end this issue and it’s not ending next issue either (They’d announce if it were the final chapter in advance, most likely) so the series will reach the 10-year anniversary mark in June.

Anyhow we’ll see ya next month! Volume 26 comes out next month too. We’re working on the HQ version of volume 4 as well.

Mangadex is still down so we have an imgur link and a cubari.moe link if you want to read it online. I have a big list of all the stuff I need to upload to Mangadex whenever it goes back up.

JoJolion Volume 5 & Volume 25

how to make a jojo reference when attacked by a lion

Woo, these are done! For some reason these ended up getting finished at the same time. So we’re caught up on new volumes again and we have one more of the older volumes out. We still need to do 3 and 4, which we’ll get to when we’ll get done once the typesetter has time to redo the typesetting on those volumes. Then we’re gonna redo the typesetting on volumes 1-2, though we already did volume scanlations of those, so it’ll only be the text that’s different. And volume 26 is planned to go on sale in early summer.

As usual, these have all the changes made between the magazines and volumes in them, which is just a couple lines usually. And for volume 5 I went back and double-checked everything and fixed a couple small mistakes and tried to make any other improvements in the translation where I could. Enjoy, everyone!

Get Back JoJo: A Look Into ‘Jojo’s Bizarre Musical Adventure’

‘JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure’ is a musical puzzle to unbox. Spotting the eclectic musical references of its author Hirohiko Araki might just get you an amazing playlist

' src=

The JoJos so far from 'JoJo's Bizarre Adventure' Manga series.

What does a song like Bob Dylan ’s “Knocking on Heaven’s Door” have to do with a Japanese manga? Or Pink Floyd ’s “Shine On You Crazy Diamond”? The Rolling Stones album Sticky Fingers ? Steely Dan ’s Aja ?

Well, these and many more are deeply embedded in the story and characters of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure .

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure , as the name suggests, is indeed one of the most unusual Japanese manga to have ever been written. Written and illustrated by mangaka Hirohiko Araki, it began its serialization in the Weekly Shonen Jump in 1987, making it one of the oldest ongoing manga series. Yes, it’s still ongoing! Wildly popular, it has spawned a plethora of memes and references hidden in plain sight.

The easiest way to find a JoJo reference is to simply scroll down the comment section of nearly any YouTube music video featuring bands mainly from the Sixties to the Eighties. You will undoubtedly come across someone talking about how the song is a JoJo reference.

Or something similarly strange along the lines of how this song makes them feel like opening a person’s face and reading them like a book. Literally.

It’s called JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure after all.

Naturally, because it’s been running for 35 years and counting, it’s a given that there are a LOT of characters. JJBA ’s characters often have unique abilities or attacks (think of it like the superheroes from Marvel or DC) and almost all of them are named after songs, musicians, bands and albums.

It’s no secret that Araki is a fan of Western music, and his manga makes it very clear. It’s an adventure in itself finding nearly every single easter egg and nods to all the musicians, some are obvious but others are a little obscure. What you’re about to read is essentially a guide to the music references scattered in JoJo’s bizarre universe and how they’ve been linked to the characters that have been named after them.

Be warned, this is going to be full of spoilers; it’s hard to get into detail while avoiding them.

JJBA is currently divided into nine parts, each replete with their own references. Parts one to six, broken down to its bare bones, is basically a tale of the trials and tribulations of the Joestar family (which takes place over generations) thanks to the primary antagonist Dio Brando and his various minions, and whatever the consequences of Dio’s actions. So, what better place to start at than the very beginning? Phantom Blood.

Blending together Bram Stroker’s Dracula and Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables , the tone and setting of Phantom Blood greatly differs from the successive parts. And we get our first music reference right in the beginning with the Joestar clan’s patriarch — George Joestar I.

Fun fact: the first four generations of Joestars are all Beatles references. George Joestar I (and his grandson George Joestar II) are a reference to George Harrison. Jonathan Joestar (the first JoJo) is based off the song “Get Back.” Joseph Joestar (Jonathan’s grandson) is designed after “Come Together.” Lots to unpack, isn’t it?

Let’s keep things simple sticking to just Jonathan for a while.

Paul McCartney in Many Years From Now (Barry Miles, 1997) said, “Many people have since claimed to be the JoJo and they’re not, let me put that straight! I had no particular person in mind, again it was a fictional character, half man, half woman, all very ambiguous. I often left things ambiguous, I like doing that in my songs.”

While Jonathan Joestar (affectionately called JoJo) hasn’t claimed to be the JoJo from “Get Back,” he certainly is a fictional character inspired by the lyrics (and the restaurant which Araki frequented in his hometown, called Jonathan’s).

If Jonathan could be described using just a single word it would be — gentleman. The very picture of chivalry — kind, gentle and brave. To be the ‘true gentleman’ is Jonathan’s goal. He sees the best in everyone and sympathizes even with his enemies. Combined with his affable, good-hearted nature, he’s able to turn even a street thug who ambushes him into a loyal friend and ally. He’s a skilled fighter but doesn’t harm anyone unless they explicitly deserve it. Jonathan is able to think on his feet, even in the direst of situations. Steadfast to his beliefs and incredibly resilient, he’s able to overcome any grief thrown his way to accomplish what he set out to do. Jonathan Joestar sets the bar very high for the future descendants of the Joestar line, the subsequent JoJos.

When Jonathan was an infant, his mother died in a carriage accident which ultimately led to the arrival of his adopted brother Dio Brando, who proceeds to steadily ruin his life, isolating Jonathan from everyone around him, from his father to his friends.

To quote The Beatles’ “Get Back”: “ Jojo was a man who thought he was a loner/ But he knew it couldn’t last.”

And it doesn’t, because of Erina Pendleton (his girlfriend and future wife). Erina is aptly named after Elenore Rigby to match Jonathan’s “Get Back.” Rescued by Jonathan as a child, she’s impressed by his selflessness and courage to stand up for someone he doesn’t even know. She’s the first person who supports and believes in Jonathan when Dio turns everyone away from him.

The proper lady to Jonathan’s gentleman, Erina is compassionate, tender and sweet. But she’s more than capable of holding her ground when the situation demands it.

Erina Pendleton, much like her namesake Elenore Rigby, is a character fated to be lonely. She’s separated from Jonathan for seven years and becomes too mortified to face him after being humiliated by Dio, despite Jonathan defending her. Their reunion is a bittersweet one when she nurses Jonathan’s wounds in the hospital after the Joestar Manor is burned to the ground. Even that reunion is cut short when Jonathan decides to keep his distance while going off to fight Dio.

Illustrated portrait of the manga couple Jonathan Joestar and Erina Pendleton from the series JoJo's Bizarre Adventure

While she waits for Jonathan’s return, the face she wears — which she keeps in a jar by the door — is a brave one. Though they get married later, their honeymoon comes to an abrupt end as Jonathan dies aboard a sinking ship, sacrificing himself to make sure Dio stays dead. He convinces Erina to save herself and rescue an infant who was also aboard the ship. Erina is once again separated from the man she loves.

This isn’t the end of Erina’s loneliness. The next loved one to be lost to her is her son George Joestar II, killed by a vampire. Yes, there are vampires. Soon the only family left to her is her grandson, Joseph — the second JoJo. Joseph leaves her behind in New York while he investigates the appearance of the mysterious Pillar Men (the musical references of whom will all be revealed in good time). Once again, Erina is left all alone. Fret not, Joseph does indeed return, dramatically and from the dead.

However, unlike the tragic ending of Eleanor Rigby who, to quote the Beatles song, “ Died in the church and was buried along with her name/Nobody came ,” Erina dies surrounded by her loved ones, living to the ripe old age of 81, making hers a happy one. While Erina was one of the lonely people, she certainly did have a place where she belonged.

How to Survive a Lion Attack

If you’re managed to get yourself into a person vs lion situation, you probably don’t know what to do about it. Thankfully, the internet is here for you

If you find yourself in a fight against a lion, as one unfortunate Canadian did recently , things have probably already gone pretty badly for you. You’re probably lost in the open plains of Africa, alone, at night. Try to avoid that, if at all possible. But, really, any time you’re near lions, you should be careful. Lauren Fagen, the injured Canadian, was attacked while volunteering at a wildlife rehabilitation center in South Africa.

If you have managed to get yourself into a person vs. lion situation, you probably don’t know what to do about it. Thankfully, the internet is here for you . More so than it probably should be.

How to Survive a Lion Attack

The first thing to know about surviving a lion attack is to not run. It should not surprise you that a lion is way faster than you, but in case you need numbers: the fastest human to ever live, Usain Bolt, can run 27.79 miles per hour. A lion can run 50 miles per hour. So stand still. As one Quora answerer put it , “If you run, you’ll only die tired.”

While you’re standing still, the next thing to do is figure out what the lion wants. Lions that are feeling threatened will swish their tails back and forth, much like your cat does. Lions that are hunting try to stay as still as possible, holding their tails rigid. If a lion is hunting you, this is very bad for you.

Should the lion charge you, you still must not run. This will obviously be difficult, as Discover Wildlife says , in what could be described as an understatement, “Being charged by a lion when you are on foot is extremely frightening.” No matter how scared you are, do not run, and do not turn your back to the lion. If it helps, Discover Wildlife says that “most charges are mock charges, so you will usually be fine.”

In many animal attacks the advice is to make yourself look bigger. You see this a lot in lion attack advice, too. But remember, lions regularly take on (and eat) zebras, giraffes, elephants and buffalo—all animals notably larger than you are. Oh, and also, don’t climb a tree, because lions can climb trees better than you can. There’s a reason they’re the top predator. “The lion hunts terrified prey every day. You’ve don’t have much experience with lion fighting. On that basis alone, its got a serious advantage,” writes a Quora user.

You might have also heard that fire wards off lions. This worked in The Jungle Book . It will not work for you. Most lions are not afraid of campfires and will walk around them to see what’s going on.

But if you want advice rather than a reminder that you’ll likely lose this fight, another member of Quora has some. Rory Young, a Safari Guide, has this to say:

If you see stalking indications then raise your arms above your head and wave them and most importantly SHOUT YOUR HEAD OFF. If you have something in your hand then throw it at the lion. Even if the lion charges you do not run. Believe me this can be extremely intimidating. They charge at 80 km per hour and the roaring is deafening. If you have frozen and then lion is not approaching but not leaving either then start to back slowly away. If it starts to move then freeze immediately. If you have frozen and then lion is not approaching but not leaving either then start to back slowly away. If it starts to move then freeze immediately.

But most sites say that your best bet is spraying the lion with pepper spray. Or shooting it with a gun. You didn’t bring either of those on your walk alone through the African plains? Well, then you’d best stay quite still.

How To Survive A Lion Attack (11 Effective Safety Tips)

How To Survive A Lion Attack - Effective Safety Tips

Ever met a lion before? Behind bars and in the safety of a safari cruise, they can be pleasant to view.

But it’s a different story if you meet one inch close to you with no steel barrier or tour guide.

Lions are wild carnivores and are known to harm humans , so meeting one won’t be the same as encountering a deer.

This is why you need to know how to survive a lion attack or, even better, avoid an encounter with one, especially if you’re outdoorsy.

A lion attack can be frightening, and that’s understandable. However, the first best decision to make is to remain calm.

If you run, this creature will outrun you, and you stand a better chance at trying every other step below.

Read on to learn how to deal with lions in the wild and ways to prevent an encounter with them.

Lions: An Overview

Lion (Panthera leo) Male Hunting in the Plains

Lions are wild relatives of domestic cats, being a member of the Felidae (cat) family.

It also belongs to the Panthera genus. Lions can only be found in Africa and Asia (specifically India).

They used to be more widespread, but the species in North America got extinct. 1

Preferred habitats include grasslands, savannas, and shrublands.

Males and females are very different, with the former sporting a mane that the latter doesn’t have.

They both have brown skin and are large, though males are larger. Lions are apex predators in their range, so they have few enemies except humans.

Finally, lions are social species that move in pride. The pride consists of more females that hunt, with a few males who are the leaders.

They are classified as vulnerable by the IUCN due to factors like human-animal conflict.

Are Lions Dangerous?

As apex predators , lions pose enormous threats to prey within their range and humans as well.

These animals are considered one of the most dangerous in the world, surpassed only by a few other animals like the tiger.

Lions mainly hunt big animals like deer, wildebeests, buffalos, and even giraffes.

Lions don’t make it a habit to attack humans. However, they are predators and sometimes see people as prey.

Lions are also responsible for up to 100 human fatalities yearly, making them among the most dangerous animals in the world .

How to Survive a Lion Attack – 8 Effective Tips

Close Up Lion Hunting and Launching an Attack

You’re more likely to see a lion while on a trip to certain countries in Africa.

Lions are not always willing to attack, but sometimes they may go after the nearest human if they’re hungry or their hunting instincts kick in.

Below are seven effective tips for surviving a lion attack:

1. Don’t panic or flee

This is a crucial step. Lions are frightening, and the first thing you might think to do in this situation is to run.

However, running puts you in a bad position. Lions easily outrun humans for a start.

They’d also consider you as prey if you ran, and being in a panic makes it hard for you to strategize.

Thus, though this is counterintuitive, do not run or panic. Try to remain calm.

Take deep breaths to steady your nerves, and do not take your eyes off the lion.

2. Step back slowly

With your eyes on the lion, retreat step by step and with ease. A fair warning, keeping your eyes doesn’t mean you should stare at it directly.

If you do this, it might consider you a threat. Just ensure you still see it as you move it.

Gauge its body language. If it is pawing the ground, then you’re fortunate as it won’t attack you.

If its tail is wagging, it feels threatened. If it stands very still, then it’s about to attack.

3. If it charges, remain standing

A lion might first size you up, then attempt a mock charge. Again, do not run.

You’d only be giving it the thrill of a chase, and as a hunter, it’ll be like that. Usually, the mock charge is to get its prey on the move.

Don’t fall for the trap.

4. Yell to drive it off

You want the lion to see you as strong, not weak. Lions can sense fear, another reason you shouldn’t run.

When it tries to get closer, flail your arms and YELL AS LOUD AS YOU CAN.

Ensure your arms are raised so you’d look bigger than your attacker. If it turns away, stop yelling and walk in the opposite direction.

5. If that doesn’t work, fight back

Sometimes being threatening won’t work, and the lion will attack anyways. When that happens, you should fight back.

This is also counterintuitive but the best way to survive. Lions like to go after the throat, which means it’ll jump.

Do not crouch, as this puts you in a disadvantaged position. Punch at the lion’s face or kick it when it comes within that proximity.

6. If you do panic and run, don’t run in a straight line

What if you panic and run instinctively? Again, lions run faster than the fastest human, so don’t think you can outrun it.

The only way to survive a lion chase is to follow the “deer style.” Rather than run in a straight line, take sharp turns to slow the lion down. 2

7. Get medical help

Encounters with wild animals often injure a person, even if they survive. It might be a scratch from the lion that landed on your arm.

After the lion leaves, seek immediate medical help, whether you got injured or not. It’s best to be safe.

8. Get psychological help

Lion attacks can be traumatizing, even more than other animals.

Thus, you might want to consider getting psychological help through therapy, especially if you’ve been showing signs that you’ve been scarred.

These signs include nightmares and panic attacks.

How to Avoid Encountering A Lion

As the cliche goes, prevention is better than cure. If the tips above sound difficult for you, that’s because surviving a lion attack is not an easy feat.

It is better to avoid encountering these animals than to try and fight one. For that reason, we add some preventive measures you can take. They include:

1. Be more careful at night

Like other cats, lions tend to be nocturnal and hunt at night.

Reduce nightly activities and keep watch in an environment filled with these creatures.

2. Do not approach cubs

Lioness with Young Cubs

Baby mammals are usually cute, and lion cubs are no exceptions. You might be tempted to approach and even pick up one.

But where there is a cub, there’s often a lioness prowling close by, and she’s very protective of her babies.

If you see a lion cub, move away from the area. If it looks lost, you can contact the right authorities.

3. Stay away from mating lions

Mating lions are very aggressive and territorial, so if you see them from afar, get away as fast as possible.

Lions have no particular mating season, so you can randomly come across mating individuals at any time of the year.

Additional Information

  • Unless you have no other option, do not kill the lion. These animals are classified as vulnerable, and the population keeps declining.
  • Do not play dead if you see a lion; you’ll only end up dead.
  • Do not try to take away a lost cub, even if you know the mother isn’t around.

Final Thoughts

Surviving a lion attack can be difficult, especially as our instincts push us to run first rather than stand down and fight back.

This is why we advise you to prevent any encounter with them.

You can also protect yourself with some non-lethal weapons like a dart gun or spray. You can also scare them away with a rifle.
