Good Academic Standing

To remain in good academic standing, doctoral students are expected to maintain a B grade point average.

Teaching Requirement

Students are required to complete a teaching engagement of one full academic term that includes at least 8 hours, or 3 class sessions, of front-of-class teaching experience and at least 16 hours of teaching preparation time.

Special Field Exam

Students are required to pass the Special Field Exam at the end of the second year or beginning of the third year. This exam has two parts: a written exam and an oral exam based on a research paper a student has written.

Dissertation Proposal

By the end of their third year, all students are required to obtain approval of their dissertation proposal by their Dissertation Chair.

Oral Examination

Students are required to complete a dissertation proposal oral examination. In evaluating the student’s performance at the orals, the Dissertation Committee will take into account the quality of the student’s oral presentation, the quality of the student’s responses to questions from the Dissertation Committee, and the written material prepared prior to the oral date.

Dissertation

Students are required to write a dissertation, which typically takes the form of three publishable papers, to the satisfaction of their Dissertation Committee. The dissertation defense is oral and open to the public.

The Kellogg Marketing doctoral program provides rigorous training in the skills required for success as a world-class marketing researcher. This is achieved via coursework, close collaboration with faculty, and intellectual exchange in a department known for its research culture.

Our program offers two different tracks in training marketing scholars: a consumer behavior track, and a quantitative marketing track. Both tracks focus on understanding the impact of marketing activity on consumers and firms. However, they differ in terms of the theories and methods used to analyze data. Consumer behavior researchers tend to focus on psychological aspects of a consumer’s decision-making process and analyze data collected through laboratory studies and field experiments. Quantitative marketing researchers often draw on theories of behavior from related social sciences (e.g., economics, psychology, sociology), use data from observational and archival sources and field experiments, and analyze the data using advanced statistical and econometric techniques.

Requirements can also be found in the Program Guidelines for Marketing PhD students issued by the Kellogg School of Management.

While the goal of our doctoral program is the awarding of a PhD degree, a Master of Science (MS) degree may be awarded to currently enrolled, qualified doctoral students. Students who are continuing for a PhD degree, or students who withdraw from the PhD program, may be considered for a MS degree if they are in good academic standing and have completed 9 graded doctoral courses with a cumulative 3.0 GPA.

Total Units Required: 18

Students in the PhD Program are required to take 18 courses; however the required and elective courses are different based upon the research track: consumer behavior or quantitative marketing. Refer to the course tables below for each research track.

Consumer Behavior:

Special Note: Students enroll in the 4 courses listed above in years one and two.

Quantitative Marketing:

To fulfill the 18-course requirement, students must register for a minimum of 3 courses in fall, winter, and spring quarters during years one and two. Registration in Independent study ( MKTG 499-0 ) would also qualify. All elective courses must be approved. Students must maintain a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 to be in good academic standing.

Other PhD Degree Requirements

• Examinations: PhD qualifying exam during June of the first year. 
• Research/Projects: Oral presentation of a research paper at the end of summer in years one and two, at which time the performance on the qualifying exam, coursework, and second-year paper are reviewed and students are passed into candidacy.
• PhD Dissertation: Original and significant research; topic and advisor or advisors should be selected in the second year; presentation of preliminary results (prospectus) to their committee no later than the last day of final exams in the fall quarter of their fourth year.
• Final Evaluations: Oral final examination on dissertation and submission of an approved dissertation.

GRE scores are sometimes one of the requirements for applying to graduate school. What are they? Why do you need them to get into graduate programs? Getting into grad school may be difficult for some students. The GRE may seem to make it even more challenging.

What is the GRE?

The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is a type of standardized test. It often helps to evaluate the student’s analytical and reasoning skills in key areas. This could include math, writing, and reading. The GRE is not for a specific subject or study plan. Students do not need to have college level education in any specific course. Rather, it typically focuses on an overall look at the student’s qualifications and skill sets.

Earning a doctoral degree often requires a lot of hard work. The GRE seems to be a test that gauges whether someone may be able to do that work. Yet, it may be possible to get a PhD without a GRE.

Test maker ETS develops and administers the GRE test. This is often done for graduate and business schools. This allows for the creation of a standard model to weigh the students’ qualifications for academic work at the graduate level.

Specifically, the GRE is a multiple-choice test. It is typically completed on a computer. The exam’s results are often necessary for admittance into a grad school program.

Why Do Schools Sometimes Require a GRE Score for Admission?

Most often, colleges and universities look at the GRE requirements as one component of admission consideration. They may also look at your academic record, GPA, supporting materials, and analytical writing, more to make the decision about admitting you.

Many admissions requirements for graduate school exist. That may include having a master’s degree, meeting GPA requirements, and completing a GRE requirement. From the school’s perspective, testing a student’s knowledge after a master’s education may make sense. It typically focuses on problem solving skills. It may also include critical thinking skills. These are often important skills necessary in a PhD degree program. The test may also consider quantitative reasoning, writing skills, and verbal reasoning.

Is It Possible for GRE Exams to Be Waived?

The GRE is often a common part of the admissions process. However, there may be opportunities to waive the need for these test scores. It is usually up to the school itself to determine if a GRE is necessary. There are some schools that do not require a GRE test. These graduate programs that do not require a GRE score are often no different in quality or content than those that do. The school simply decides to waive this admissions requirement.

There may be other ways to waive the GRE as well. This may include:

• GPA cutoff. Schools may look at your GPA from your master’s programs or bachelor’s degree. If it meets their standards, this may waive the GRE.
• Experience. Some applying for a doctoral degree program have working experience. Did you work for 5 years in the field? Some schools set a number of years requirement. If you meet it, no GRE test is necessary.
• Previous graduate degree. Some programs waive the GRE if a student has a completed graduate degree.

These differ from one school to the next. GRE waiver rules are set by the school. It’s often possible to find PhD programs without GRE test rules.

Is It Possible to Get a PhD Without a GRE?

List of PhD Programs That Don’t Require GRE

Here is a list of some additional schools and PhD programs that don’t require GRE. These may help you to get an idea of what to expect. Remember, this is not a full list. Other schools and program options may exist. Be sure to check with the school you are considering. Find out if they offer no GRE programs for the area of interest you have.

#1: The Walden University Self-Designed Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) 

People working in business administration may benefit here. It allows students to explore modern applied managerial theories. It may involve research. Students may choose from several concentrations. That includes International Business  and  Global Supply Chain Management .

#2: Chicago School of Professional Psychology

This is an online PhD in Organizational Leadership with no GRE. Students may hope to complete a PsyD. Students analyze and assess problems in organizations. Also, students may study and develop creative solutions to those problems. The goal is to create positive change.

#3: California Southern University Doctor of Business Administration (DBA)

This program focuses on business knowledge development. It also includes practical skill development. The aim is to prepare senior leadership skills. It takes into account a complex global economy. Students tackle problems and develop solutions in this area.

#5: Smith College’s PhD in Social Work 

The social sciences are another area of study to consider. These d. programs require students to have some post-master’s degree professional experience. This may include licensing or certification. #6: Cal Southern University’s School of Behavioral Sciences PsyD Program

A PysD degree with no GRE requirements is an option here. Students take numerous courses here. This includes those in personality theory and psych pharmacology. Then, students work on a doctoral project. This may be something the prospective student is interested in. It may be to research solutions to a problem impacting their experience. Students completing the program may meet the State of California’s requirements for licensure. This may allow for licensing as a clinical psychologist. An exam and other requirements may apply.

#7: Walden University, PhD in Clinical Psychology

The PhD in Clinical Psychology here is fully online. It focuses on testing from a range of hypotheses. Students may also choose from a range of other concentrations. There is ample flexibility in this program. Students may be able to choose classes that fit with their specific interest or career goals. Their  PhD in Health Psychology combines courses in research methods with topics like bio-psychology and psychoneuroimmunology (PNI).

#8: Nova Southeastern University’s PhD in Marriage and Family Therapy 

This is an accredited program by the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE) of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT). It covers courses in lifespan, family systems theories, and counseling techniques for groups and individuals. There is also a teaching practicum and clinical practice. Students engage in a wide range of research programs. This program enables students to work towards their specific career goals as well.

#8: Saint Leo University Doctor of Criminal Justice in Homeland Security

Those studying criminal justice may wish to look into this no GRE graduate program. It is available fully online. That may allow the student to continue to work in the field as they study. The program may also provide a wide range of skill improvement and opportunities for developing leadership skills. In this program, students analyze various techniques. The goal is to refine and improve their ability to think and lead in a strategic manner. Another option is to take the educational track for teacher-leaders. This may be optimal for students who wish to teach others criminal justice skills. The key here is the focus is on homeland security. Other paths may be available as well.

#10: Northcentral University’s DCJ in White Collar Crime 

Northcentral University offers a Doctor of Criminal Justice as well. This program focuses on white collar crime specifically. It is a fully online doctoral program. Again, this may allow students to continue to work while they learn. This program has a focus of identifying and exposing white collar economic crimes. Students may already have basic skills in this area from the professional work they did.

Students may learn more about fraud examination techniques, prosecuting and sentencing, and accounting and forensic accounting theories. It is a hands on type of course. Students develop key skills in leadership as well. As a PhD program, there may be research involved. Some students may spend much of their time developing new solutions and strategies applicable.

#11: Andrews University DNP

Another avenue for obtaining a DNP is in the Andrews University program. It offers three tracks for students. These are bridge programs. That means they help students go from having a bachelor’s degree to a PhD through one or more paths. Students choose the path for them. That is based on previous degrees and designations.

These programs allow those who have a registered nurse license with just an undergraduate degree to complete their DNP. It may allow them to skip the master’s degree process. These programs include the BSN – DNP, MSN – DNP, and APRN – DNP tracks. Students choose the track based on what level of education they have now. This may speed up their education. It may help them earn a DNP in a much shorter timeframe.

#12: Sacred Heart University Doctor of Nursing Practice

This is another DNP opportunity. Students completing this program study a range of topics related to management and skill building in this field. The key goal is to help students learn to transform or improve practice. They may also learn strategies for better leadership and management skills. They may focus on engaging in practical research as well.

The DNP option may enable students to focus on areas of interest to them. This is a no GRE program. It requires students to have professional experience in the field. Students must also be a licensed RN to complete this course of education.

#13: Temple University PhD in Bioengineering

In this program from Temple University, students conduct research. Their focus is on the crossroads between translational medicine and engineering. Students complete courses and develop research in the field. This may include finding ways to innovative in the industry.

Students may focus on a range of topics in this area. That may include neuro-engineering, stem and cancer cell engineering, tissue regeneration, and more. Students may be able to choose some topics that interest them. This may include areas of study specific to their career goals.

#14: Temple University PhD in Mechanical Engineering

In this doctoral degree program, students focus on manufacturing mechanical systems. This may include innovations and developments in topics such as such as car airbag sensors or electric propulsion systems for space travel. Areas of potential research include material science, mechanics and robotics.

The key in this research based program is to develop solutions to current problems. Students may need to meet numerous prerequisites. This may include professional experience in the industry. Keep in mind that Temple University offers a few GRE waiver options. This may be available to doctoral students. Students typically need to have a master’s degree completed. They may also need to complete 16 PhD-level credits to earn the degree. In addition, students need to complete exams and a dissertation in their course of study. In total, these programs listed here (and others that may be available) require 30 credit hours of completed studies. Check with the school about specific waiver requirements for the program selected.

Are Online No GRE PhD Programs an Option?

Yes, there are numerous online PhD programs that may allow students to begin their studies without a GRE requirement. An online program may allow a student to work at his or her own pace. It may have some pre-scheduled class meet times. It may require some in-person meetings. Or, others do not. Some programs are also self-paced. This may make it easier to obtain a degree for those working.

Online degrees may provide ample flexibility to students. In recent years, many students have utilized online programs. They may help make completing a PhD a bit easier when other challenges of life are present. That may include taking care of a family, working, or meeting other responsibilities.

Keep this in mind, though. For some PhD students, on-campus learning is a must. The field may require more hands-on work. Students may benefit from being in person if they learn better in that format. Learn more about the doctoral programs. Determine if the work completed fits your needs and skills. Determine if you feel comfortable studying at home or on your own.

What Other Admissions Requirements Do Universities Use for Doctoral Programs?

A school decides not to require students to complete the GRE test. Now what? How do they know if a student is prepared for graduate school?

They may use other factors. They may look at previous work or studies. Some of the other tools they use include:

Patient safety, public health, health policy, performance improvement, and quality of care are some of these critical concerns. DNP students could also learn how to integrate nursing science with organizational leadership and ethics.

Instead of the GRE, applicants may need a masters degree with an advanced nursing practice and current U.S. RN license and certification in an advanced nursing practice role, if applicable. Many schools also perform background checks as part of the application process. You may also be interested in accelerated, direct entry and MSN to DNP programs . Many nursing graduate schools have DNP programs – in fact these come in online, campus and sometimes blended (hybrid) formats. Accredited DNP programs may be approved by an agency such as the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) . 4 Reasons to Consider PhD Without GRE Programs

Finding a no GRE PhD program may be well worth the search for a lot of students. Here are four reasons to factor into your decision process.

#1 – The GRE’s Predictive Powers Are Limited

In recent years, the GRE has lost some of its control over the admissions process. In part, according to UC Berkeley , researchers have found the scores don’t predict how a student might fare as the program progresses because it wasn’t measure things such as finely-tuned instincts or how well a student collaborates with a lab partner.

#2 – Accredited Universities Offer PhD Programs No GRE Required

It’s a fair question to wonder whether grad schools with PhD No GRE programs are accredited or set lower standards than those who ask for GRE test scores. You may want to do some digging – compare programs, find out what alumni report, and verify success rates.

Also, regional and professional accreditors require the school to undergo a periodic review, so they usually maintain a data base with this information.

#3 – Universities Use Other Admissions Requirements

Universities that offer PhD programs without GRE requirements might use alternative proof of thinking measures used to weed out applicants. Here are a few sample documents that applicants may need to tack onto a completed form and deposit.

• Masters or first professional degree (from a regionally accredited college/university)
• Minimum overall GPA – set by university
• Current letters of recommendation (3 – 5)
• Goals (why and how this specific PhD program lines up with your goals)

#4 – A Masters Degree Might Suffice

Several PhD programs across the sciences, arts, and engineering require GRE scores of applicants with a bachelor’s degree or for those who did not complete a research thesis for their masters degree.

The GRE tests knowledge of math, critical thinking, and literacy, as well as an ability to reason. While these are viewed as skills that could indicate whether a student has the aptitude for analysis necessary in a PhD program, persons with a master’s degree and professional experience may be able to show they have these skills without need for GRE scores.

As an example, the University of Fairfax requires applicants to the Doctorate of Information Assurance (DIA) program to have Masters and five years of relevant experience.

Marketing Requirements: Quantitative Track

I. preparation.

As preparation for the general program requirement, some marketing students, depending on their previous preparation, find it useful to complete the courses below or the equivalent in the summer prior to the first year or during the first year. Questions concerning what constitutes adequate preparation should be directed to the doctoral liaison.

Students specializing in quantitative marketing are expected to have adequate computer programming skills (C++, MATLAB, or the equivalent). If students do not have adequate computer programming skills, they may learn this material on their own or take the Stanford Computer Science course CS106A: Programming Methodology.

II. Course Requirements

All required courses must be taken for a grade (not pass/fail or credit/no credit). Exceptions are made if the required course is offered pass/fail or credit/no credit only. Each course must be passed with a grade of P or B- or better. Substitutions of required courses (typically sought because a required course is not offered in the quarter of choice) require approval from the faculty liaison. Waiving a course requirement based on similar doctoral level course completed elsewhere requires the approval of the course instructor, faculty liaison, and the PhD Program Office.

III. Practicum

Students are required to sign up for either research or teaching practicum each quarter of enrollment. Below is a description of the practicum requirements for quantitative marketing students.

Year 1: Regularly attend and participate in the Marketing and Work-in-Progress (WIP) seminars. Work with a different marketing faculty in autumn, winter, and spring quarters for initial research exposure.

Years 2 – 5: Attend and participate in the Marketing and WIP seminars. Attendance is required for all Marketing Seminars designated as Combined or Quantitative, and recommended for the seminars designated as Behavioral. Continue research work with faculty of student’s choice. Students are also encouraged to take the visiting Quantitative/Combined seminar speaker to lunch after the Marketing seminar.

Years 3 - 5: Recommended that students enroll in MGTECON 628: Reading Group in Industrial Organization and attend and participate in the weekly “IO Lunch.”

IV. Summer Research Papers

Students will submit the first-year paper by the end of the autumn quarter in the second year. The first-year paper will be presented to the faculty early in the winter quarter of the second year. The primary goal of the first-year paper is to give students the experience of going through the entire process of a research piece, including data analysis. This is also the time to learn programming and to start thinking about working with data. The paper can be an extension of a published piece or a work-in-progress. Students are expected to work closely with faculty on the research. It is typical that the first-year summer paper is related to an extension of research conducted by one of the Stanford GSB marketing faculty, due to the ready availability of data. There is no expectation that the research is publishable. The key objective is learning the “art of research”.

The second paper is due by the end of the autumn quarter in the third year, and should be presented to the faculty early in the winter quarter in the third year. The second paper is expected to be of publishable quality in a good field journal, and driven primarily by the student. Co-authorship with faculty is encouraged (though not required); however, the student is expected to be the lead driver of the project.

The overall evaluation of each paper will be judged by two faculty members, one of whom could be the collaborating faculty member (if any), as High Pass, Pass, Marginal, or Fail. This evaluation will take into account the strengths and weaknesses of the research; the student’s effort and contribution; and whether the student evidences ability to produce high quality research. Passing both papers is required for maintaining good academic status and advancing to candidacy.

V. Field Exam

Students take the field exam in the summer after their first year. It is an open-book, open-notes exam. The student is to work on the exam independently over five days. The exam tests whether the student is able to apply the knowledge assimilated over the first year of coursework to a real Marketing problem.

VI. Teaching Requirement

A minimum of one quarter of course assistantship or teaching practicum. Requirement must be completed prior to graduation.

VII. Candidacy

Admission to candidacy for the doctoral degree is a judgment by the faculty of the student’s potential to successfully complete the requirements of the degree program. Students are required to advance to candidacy by September 1 before the start of their fourth year in the program.

VIII. University Oral Exams

The oral examination is a defense of the dissertation work in progress. The student orally presents and defends the thesis work in progress at a stage when it is one-half to two-thirds complete. The oral examination committee tests the student on the theory and methodology underlying the research, the areas of application and portions of the major field to which the research is relevant, and the significance of the dissertation research. Students are required to successfully complete the oral exams by September 1 before the start of their fifth year in the program.

IX. Dissertation

The doctoral dissertation is expected to be an original contribution to scholarship or scientific knowledge, to exemplify the highest standards of the discipline, and to be of lasting value to the intellectual community. The marketing faculty defer to the student’s Dissertation Reading Committee to provide general guidelines (e.g. number of chapters, length of dissertation) on the dissertation.

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — A former University of Arizona graduate student was sentenced Monday to life in prison without the possibility of parole for fatally shooting a hydrology professor on campus months after he was expelled.

A Pima County jury last month found Murad Dervish guilty of first-degree murder in the death of Thomas Meixner, who was shot 11 times near his office on Oct. 5, 2022.

Meixner, 52, headed the university’s Department of Hydrology and Atmospheric Sciences. Dervish, 48, was in the master’s degree program in atmospheric sciences.

Authorities said Dervish was banned from the school in January 2022 and later expelled for ongoing issues with professors after he received a bad grade.

Jurors deliberated for less than three hours on May 21 before reaching their verdicts against Dervish.

He also was convicted on five other felony counts, including aggravated assault for a bullet that grazed a building manager.

During the trial, Dervish’s attorney said his client was in the midst of a psychotic episode at the time of the shooting and urged jurors to consider a lesser charge of second-degree murder that could have meant confinement in a psychiatric hospital, rather than a prison cell.

But prosecutors said evidence showed Dervish planned Meixner’s killing and bought a 9 mm handgun a month before using it in the shooting.

According to a criminal complaint, a flyer with a photograph of Dervish was then circulated to university staff in February 2022 with instructions to call 911 if Dervish ever entered the John W. Harshbarger Building, where Meixner worked.

The complaint also said Dervish was barred from school property and was the subject of several reports of harassment and threats to staff members working at Harshbarger.

Witnesses testified that Dervish was wearing a surgical mask and baseball cap as a disguise when he showed up outside Meixner’s office and shot the professor.

Dervish fled the scene but was arrested three hours later after Arizona state troopers stopped his car on a highway more than 120 miles (190 kilometers) northwest of Tucson.

Authorities said a loaded handgun was found in the vehicle, and the ammunition was consistent with the shell casings found at the shooting scene.

“The man who took my husband’s life will spend the rest of his life in prison, but that doesn’t bring Tom back,” Kathleen Meixner said in a statement after the sentencing. “My sons will never see their father again in this life. The University of Arizona lost a treasured professor. The community lost a brilliant scientist.”

Former student heads to prison for life for killing University of Arizona professor

PHOENIX − A former University of Arizona graduate student was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murder of a professor on campus in 2022 .

Murad Dervish , 48, was found guilty of first-degree murder after he shot Thomas Meixner, head of the university's Department of Hydrology and Atmospheric Sciences, on Oct. 5, 2022. The sentence he received Monday will put him behind bars for the rest of his natural life, plus 14 years, with no parole.

Last month, a jury also found him guilty of a slew of other charges , including one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, one count of burglary and three counts of endangerment. Dervish was a graduate student who was expelled and prohibited from being on campus.

He was accused of threatening Meixner and other faculty and university staff for more than a year.

Dervish's attorney wanted his client to be found guilty but insane, telling the jury Dervish did not know right from wrong and was psychotic, paranoid and delusional. The prosecutor from the Pima County Attorney’s Office argued the murder was premeditated and showed threatening emails and evidence that Dervish planned to kill Meixner in the weeks and months before the shooting.

Family, university requested life without parole

During the sentencing, Meisner’s sisters, son and wife spoke about their experience, and all requested Dervish be sentenced to life in prison without a chance of parole. They spoke about how kind and intelligent Meixner was and how he was generous with his community.

One of his sons, Sean Meixner, spoke before the sentencing about his grief, sadness and hatred of Dervish, stating his life would never be the same without his father. He spoke about feeling as though he is waiting to die so he can hold his father again and be free of the "agony living in his absence."

“How could a man who devoted his life to God and others be taken from this life in the worst way possible, in pain and fear? Where was God in that?” he said.

Celina Ramirez, representing the university, said Meixner was a passionate, world-renowned scholar and kind mentor whose leadership resulted in the hydrology department’s high ranking.

She said the shooting has hurt the mental health of students and university staff, noting the challenge it is for many students and employees to return to campus.

“No legal punishment could ever be enough to fully atone for the intense grief and pain the defendant has inflicted upon Dr. Meixner's family, friends, colleagues, students, and the university community,” Ramirez said.

But Meixner’s sisters specifically criticized the university, as well as UA police and the person who sold Dervish the gun he used to kill Meixner.

“The University of Arizona failed my brother,” said Margaret Meixner, one of his sisters. "He loved and trusted the U of A, but that trust was misplaced."

She called the university’s police department incompetent and said the police and the university had her “brother’s blood on their hands.”

University police,  according to a letter by university president Robert Robbins , went to the county attorney’s office twice to seek charges against Dervish. The county attorney declined to press charges because of a lack of evidence.

In the months after the shooting, a faculty report found the university knew about the threats and failed to implement an effective risk management system to keep people on campus safe. Another  report , compiled by a consultant hired by the university, offered 33 recommendations for improving security.

Since then, the university has implemented numerous safety changes and updated safety communications. Meixner's family settled a lawsuit against the university for $2.5 million for failing to protect Meixner.

Dervish apologizes to Meixner's family but says trial was unfair

After Meixner’s family members spoke, Dervish addressed the judge over the objection of his attorney.

Dervish said he was pushed to speak because of the repeated mentions of him being a monster. Dervish spoke about how he had been enamored by the weather ever since he was a child and was so happy when he got into the University of Arizona.

“I felt I was in this new and magical place. I was going to study what I always wanted to truly study,” he said, adding that he fought addiction, homelessness and rejection by people in his life.

He said his heart broke for “what happened.”

“For them to lose him is just horrible, to his wife I don’t even know what to say,” Dervish said. “Just saying the word 'sorry' sounds dumb and ugly. It doesn’t fit … with what happened.” 

He also said “significant errors” were made during the trial, primarily by his attorneys. He noted the trial was not granted a change of venue and claimed the trial was unfair.

“I have yet to have a fair and impartial trial,” he said.

Pima County Superior Court Judge Howard Fell told him that he would have the opportunity for others to review whether the trial was fair.

“Right now, you are going to prison for the rest of your life,” Fell said.

Dervish threatened, harassed staff before the shooting

The prosecutor said that on the day of the shooting, Dervish entered the Harshbarger Building at UA shortly before 2 p.m. He chased Meixner down a hallway in the building and into a classroom. Dervish emptied his magazine, shooting Meixner 11 times.

Dervish then fled the building, police said. According to the complaint, police found Dervish driving on Highway 85 toward Mexico 30 miles south of Gila Bend three hours later.

Documents say Dervish refused to stop, leading police on a chase for 2 to 3 miles until his car was stopped.  

Dervish's behavior was well-known among members of the department and law enforcement before the shooting occurred. In the year before the shooting, Dervish reportedly harassed and threatened staff members working at Harshbarger Building.

Some of the threats were antisemitic: Dervish wished death to all Jews and accused Meixner of orchestrating a Jewish-led conspiracy against him, despite Meixner being raised Roman Catholic.

Dervish's attorney said his anger toward Meixner stemmed from a bad grade on a test.

Before his expulsion from the university, Dervish had been prohibited from stepping foot on university property. Pictures of Dervish were distributed throughout the department with instructions on how and when to call the police.

Additionally, entry passwords for rooms to which Dervish had access were changed.

After the judge handed down the sentence, the Pima County Attorney's Office released a statement saying County Attorney Laura Conover would bring red flag legislation back to the Legislature this year, following the wishes of Meixner's family.

“In honor of the family’s expressed wishes, and under her desire for a safer community, County Attorney Conover will bring her red flag legislation back to the legislature again next year, and for as long as it takes, to bring home common-sense gun safety reforms for a safer and healthier community," her office said in a statement.

Those laws, which have the backing of Democratic Attorney General Kris Mayes, allow courts to order the seizure of firearms from people who might be a threat to themselves or others.

Former Gov. Doug Ducey proposed a similar law, under a different name, in 2018 after 17 students and staff were killed in a shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. But the Republican's bill was rejected by the GOP-majority Legislature.

Innovation has become a hot topic in economic circles over the past few years. In March 2022, the United States’ National Science Foundation created its first new directorate in over 30 years : Technology, Innovation and Partnerships , or TIP. The passing of the CHIPS and Science Act of 2022 helped fund the directorate, the mission of which is to “advance U.S. competitiveness​ and societal impact by nurturing partnerships that​ drive and accelerate diverse innovation ecosystems, technology translation and development, and workforce development.” The U.S. is investing heavily in research and innovation—which you can take advantage of as a Ph.D. researcher working in academia or beyond.

Graduate students and postdoctoral scholars already contribute much to research and innovation in the United States through their work on a variety of projects supported by the federal government and industry partners. But despite that fact, few consider a career focused on the leading edge of innovation: entrepreneurship.

Being willing to push the boundaries of human knowledge and forge new ideas into products is essential for entrepreneurs. And to secure backing, entrepreneurs must also work to articulate the value they and their products bring to individuals, organizations and the nation. Fortunately, plenty of resources are available to assist in those efforts, although many graduate students and postdocs may not be aware of them.

To encourage more technology commercialization and entrepreneurship, in the latter half of the 20th century the federal government established two funding programs for academics and others seeking to either move full-time to a start-up company or obtain funding to develop and commercialize new technologies. The Small Business Innovation Research program supports the growth of start-up companies, while the Small Business Technology Transfer program is aimed at technology commercialization.

Both the National Institutes of Health and NSF fund grants from both programs, and both offer a variety of other mechanisms to foster an innovation and entrepreneurial ecosystem in the United States. In addition, NIH provides numerous resources to educate people about entrepreneurship and special programs like the Small Business Transition Grant for New Entrepreneurs (see a webinar on the program here ), which helps researchers interested in transitioning to entrepreneurship via a mentor.

American universities also offer an increasing number of programs that either focus on training Ph.D.s for careers in the technology transfer space or assist them in learning how to commercialize technological and other innovations coming from their research work, as our Innovation Postdoctoral Fellowship here at Virginia Tech seeks to do. In addition, NSF’s Innovation Corps (I-Corps) provides a seven-week experiential training program that prepares scientists and engineers to extend their focus beyond the university laboratory and toward commercialization by engaging in customer discovery and other activities. Such programs can be a bridge between traditional academic research and exploring an entrepreneurial career or employment in the innovation and entrepreneurial ecosystem.

Many academics may mistakenly believe that entrepreneurial skills are only relevant if one is planning to run a start-up company. Yet most faculty members running research groups at large universities are effectively leading small businesses inside their institutions. They must articulate a value proposition to get hired and ultimately secure funding for their research. In addition, most faculty leaders or principal investigators are in charge of hiring those who work in their labs and must manage these individuals and their projects toward a larger, common goal. A faculty leader must create a vision for their group and think strategically about how the various projects align toward both short- and long-term goals. This is entrepreneurship in an academic research context.

And just as an entrepreneurial mindset is essential to a successful academic career, it is also extremely useful for any scholar looking to create their own company, independent of their institution.

Entrepreneurial Skills From Your Ph.D. or Postdoc

Ph.D. training offers graduate students and postdocs many experiences to help them navigate entrepreneurship and/or working in a start-up company, such as the following.

• Project planning and management. Completing a doctoral dissertation involves extensive project planning and management skills, from ideation to execution and dissemination. This directly translates to the ability to plan and manage large projects as an entrepreneur.
• Independent work. Ph.D. students, and especially postdocs, often work independently with minimal oversight, building the drive and accountability needed to accomplish tasks without rigid external deadlines—a crucial skill for entrepreneurs.
• Networking and collaboration. Entrepreneurs thrive on networking. Similarly, Ph.D. students and postdocs benefit from building strong connections—engaging with industry professionals, attending conferences and collaborating across disciplines to enhance their network. Such connections can lead to job opportunities, collaborations and funding.

• Thirst for knowledge. A core requirement for a Ph.D. is an insatiable desire to learn and expand one’s knowledge base. Entrepreneurs must constantly step out of their comfort zones and learn new skills, making this thirst for learning invaluable for Ph.D.s and postdocs looking to focus on entrepreneurship as a career.
• Research skills. Doctoral training equips individuals with the ability to seek out, evaluate and synthesize quality information from various sources—a vital skill when navigating the unfamiliar territories of entrepreneurship.
• Curiosity about the big questions. Starting a business requires asking and answering big questions about target audiences, value propositions and strategic direction. Ph.D.s are trained to take disparate information and craft cohesive narratives to address complex inquiries. Successful entrepreneurs do the same.
• Problem-solving. Overcoming research obstacles and failed experiments hones problem-solving abilities in Ph.D.s and postdocs. As entrepreneurs constantly face new challenges, this skill is indispensable for finding innovative solutions.
• Resilience and adaptability. Entrepreneurship involves risk-taking and overcoming failures. Ph.D. students and postdocs learn resilience by navigating setbacks. This adaptability prepares them for a dynamic marketplace for their products and ideas and the post-Ph.D. job market itself, where flexibility and the ability to pivot are critical.

In essence, the rigorous training and self-driven nature of doctoral programs and postdoc positions cultivate skills like project management, working both independently and collaboratively, learning agility, strategic thinking and problem-solving—all of which are invaluable assets for successful entrepreneurship. The key to honing these skills is taking increased agency in your projects so that you learn all aspects of the process of identifying a gap in knowledge or application, scoping out the current landscape of that area and working toward a solution. It is certainly not easy work, but it can help you in graduate school, postdoctoral training and beyond.

In sum, by embracing an entrepreneurial mindset in your job search, you identify opportunities in industry, start-ups, government or nonprofits or create your own position through entrepreneurship. And even if you don’t decide to go that direction, innovative thinking and treating one’s career development like a start-up can propel you to professional growth and success. The fact that cultivating the entrepreneurial skills I’ve described can also be significantly helpful for an academic researcher means leaning into them is a win-win for any graduate student or postdoc.

Marketing Meets Science in Grad Student-Researcher Collaboration

Students in the Daniels College of Business are no strangers to using case studies to learn, but Michael Myers, associate teaching professor and academic director of the MBA program, decided to take it a step further: Why not give students the chance to collaborate with DU researchers on marketing real-world products created right here on campus?

For two students in the Professional Master of Business Administration (PMBA) program , that led to working with Mohammad Mahoor, professor of electrical and computer engineering in the Ritchie School of Engineering and Computer Science , to help him market a robot he developed to benefit children with autism spectrum disorders.

Much of Mahoor’s research focuses on computer vision, machine learning and algorithm development with the goal of developing social robots—automatons that can socially interact with humans, potentially offering a wide range of beneficial uses. Previously, Mahoor and his fellow researchers developed Ryan, a companion robot designed to assist patients with Alzheimer’s .

When Myers partnered with Mahoor to bring the project into his classroom, it drew the attention of Jacquelin Lalor, who has a background in school nursing, and Ashley Hill, assistant director of Equity Labs at DU. Both were immediately interested, says Lalor. “ I think it was a perfect fit . It touched on some things that were important to us.”

The two were tasked with developing a marketing plan and began by researching the existing market, potential demand and competing products, among numerous other factors. “Then, we did a lot of research around the audience—who uses the product that you're developing the marketing plan for? The user drives a majority of the way that the rest of the plan is set up,” says Hill. With a thorough understanding of the market, the product and the audience, they developed and presented a go-to-market plan in the spring quarter.

The opportunity to do real, meaningful work with researchers across the disciplines made the project even more impactful, Lalor says. “The integration and collaboration between different segments in the university was really exciting as an MBA student,” she says. “We do a lot of case studies, but this is personal. We met these people; we know what their work is—that's very different than reading and responding to a case study.” And for Hill, balancing the needs of a multi-faceted audience and user base was both interesting and challenging. Compared to other coursework, she says, “this was very multi-dimensional in a lot of different ways.”

Beyond gaining practical skills and real-world experience, Hill adds, collaborating with faculty whose research is focused on the public good was rewarding. “They want to help people and do research that is meaningful, important and generative. They’re looking for a better future. It was really refreshing and inspiring for me to be in conversation with this internal team and with Dr. Mahoor’s folks and to know that that alignment is out there,” she says.

For Myers, the project was part of a push to provide students opportunities to work with intellectual property, gaining valuable, real-world skills and knowledge, which he says is crucial for preparing students for their careers. “In the business school, we fight to bring reality in—because abstraction doesn't help,” he says. “That's what this type of project brings to students.”

Myers hopes to continue providing his students with these types of experiences. “The buffet is open. We would like [faculty] to come and bring projects in—and we will help you execute,” he says. “If you have a need, I've got a small army of brilliant students who will do great work.”

• A minimum GPA of 3.0

The Online MBA is a rigorous program that requires quantitative aptitude. The Daniels School's online programs admissions team will look for evidence of this in your application via previous coursework. If you feel that you do not have sufficient evidence in your previous coursework to demonstrate this aptitude, you may want to consider submitting a GMAT or GRE score to enhance your application. The GMAT or GRE is not required for admission to the online MBA.

Letters of Recommendation
