Honeywell’s Uniformance® Process History Database (PHD) collects, stores and replays historical and continuous plant process data, increasing data security and improving process performance. PHD helps engineers and plant managers make better and faster decisions with superior data management.

Uniformance PHD Provides Rich History

Uniformance PHD makes timely data visible at the production level and enterprise-wide by collecting, storing and replaying historical and continuous plant process data. PHD’s timely data empowers plant staff to better align, plan, execute and make the right decisions.

The PHD infrastructure supports the integration of existing control systems and applications across multiple plants and sites. Its seamless data interfaces, data collection fail-over and

automatic history recovery ensure maintenance of vast amounts of data in long-term history to enable user access and application integration.

In addition to collecting and consolidating potentially massive amounts of process data, PHD provides the rich historian features needed to transform data into knowledge. PHD’s calculated tags allow users to apply engineering and business knowledge to current and historical data, while built-in engineering unit conversions help users view data in a format that makes sense to them. Process data may be combined with business data to provide a view of the entire operation. PHD can, move data from operational to business/analytical level enabling better decisions.

Uniformance PHD Benefits

Benefits of Uniformance PHD include:

 Scalable: PHD’s distributed architecture ensures that data may be collected from disparate data sources into a single consistent database. A PHD database may start out small and

be expanded to handle thousands of users and millions of tags.

 Secure: PHD provides support for commonly required firewall configurations and protects historical records from

unauthorized access. Also, helps to keep traffic off the process network by avoiding load on the control system.

 Robust: PHD provides data collection and history

recovery features to ensure availability of complete data records, even after data collection interruptions.

 Open: PHD has interfaces to collect data from

numerous Honeywell and third-party systems. Every PHD server includes an OPC server license, providing open integration to third-party applications.

Distributed Scalable Architecture

Uniformance PHD’s unique shadowing architecture provides distributed data collection and consolidation with a single configuration for the entire network of PHD servers. PHD can start out as a single server connected to a single DCS and later

be expanded to collect data from numerous data providers, consolidating them into a centralized data store.

Data collection may occur at one or many physical locations, which may be widely geographically distributed. PHD collectors may be set up on offshore platforms, pipelines, shipping terminals and plant units. Each PHD collector is a full PHD history server so operators and other process users may access the local collector without having to cross network boundaries. Data may be consolidated into a single history database known as a shadow server. After a shadow server is established, collectors may be added as data collection needs expand. PHD stores configuration of the tags (data points) in a single configuration database, so even though data may exist on many servers, it need only be configured once.

Consolidated Event Journal

Beginning with R310, PHD provides history for both events and process data. Users have the historical data and tools to view process alarms, events, and process changes alongside charts and graphics to better understand trends, and troubleshoot conditions leading to process anomalies.

Consolidated Event Journal (CEJ) collects events and alarms from TPS, Experion® , OPC A&E Servers, and CEJ Peer Servers. Data collected by CEJ is available to reports and Uniformance Process Studio. If the CEJ Server fails during event collection, the system recovers history data based on the last successful date and time, ensuring that the CEJ holds a consistent record of historical events.

Automatic Uniformance PHD Monitoring

Uniformance System Monitor (USM) automates many of the repetitive tasks commonly performed by a Uniformance PHD system administrator to evaluate the health of the system and to take appropriate actions. It ensures that right actions are taken to bring the PHD system back to a desirable operating state.

Support personnel can be notified when an error condition is detected, and can be optionally notified when the situation has been corrected.

Additionally, Uniformance System Monitor provides graphical and report-style methods of examining the entire system status at any time, on a per node or summary basis.

Automatic One-Time Configuration

While PHD may be used with a variety of Honeywell and third-party systems, when Uniformance PHD integrates with Honeywell’s Experion Process Knowledge System (PKS), the result is a solution that requires less administration and gives greater data integrity than is possible with any other plant historian.

 By leveraging PHD’s Tag Synchronization capability, a new PHD system can be installed, have its tags automatically built and be collecting data all in the same day.

 Tag synchronization automatically builds the PHD database from the Experion server’s information, removing the need for costly, error-prone manual configuration.

 As points are changed or added to the Experion system, they are automatically updated in PHD as well, reducing administration and maintaining the integrity of the database.

Integrated PHD/Experion data collection links ensure that operator history data and advanced history data is consistent, while creating minimal data collection load.

With a seamless migration to Uniformance® Release 321, users can avoid the risks of obsolescence and adopt the latest Windows and SQL Server platforms. The advantages of PHD Experion integration are:

 Ability to collect a high volume for data without loading the controllers

 Protection from data loss – in the event of a network outage or server downtime, the missing history is backfilled from Experion

 Ability to view PHD data directly from the Experion trend using the PHD point server

When PHD is expanded to the enterprise level, Tag Synchronization also may be used to maintain consistency between regional PHD process historians and the enterprise PHD server at a corporate IT center. As with Experion, PHD peer Tag Synchronization builds the enterprise database, and

Meeting the external regulatory demands placed upon process industries can be costly and time-consuming. Uniformance PHD helps meet regulatory expectations by allowing the uninterrupted collection of all critical data and securing data from unauthorized tampering.

PHD’s shadow architecture ensures that the process control network can be secured through a firewall. Each PHD server is a fully functioning system so Level 3 applications can utilize the PHD collectors for their data, while general plant data users can collect data from the Level 4 shadow server. No users need connect through a firewall. Additionally, communication between PHD servers is through customer-configurable ports, allowing customers to lock down unsafe ports in the firewall.

PHD also provides the means to secure historical data from unauthorized user access to read and write, or edit data values. Security may be set for all tags, groups of tags or be narrowed down to individual tags. Additionally, enabling Data Auditing ensures that changes to historical data and tag configuration are recorded.

Unequaled Robustness

A core feature of PHD’s shadowing architecture is the ability to recover history from lower level historians. If the Level 4 shadow server is down, when it is restarted it will automatically fill in the missing time period using data from the Level 3 collector server. Additionally, if the original data source has an accessible historian, a PHD collector can automatically fill in the missing time period using that history.

When history collection is critical, it may be desirable to install two PHD collector servers to ensure that critical data collection occurs, even if a single computer fails. PHD’s robust data collection provides dual data collectors with timely automated fail-over between collectors.

Beginning with PHD release 300, users have the option to install their PHD shadow server on a Windows cluster, resulting in a high availability solution that protects against server outages.

Open Standards Lower Lifecycle Support

Open standard connectivity is available for servers and clients that support OPC Historical Data Access (HDA) and OPC Data Access (DA), allowing PHD to interface with all modern control and application platforms.

PHD is the leader in OPC standards adoption. PHD was the first historian to provide an OPC Historical Data Access server and the first to provide an OPC HDA Client.

In addition to OPC, PHD provides Microsoft OLEDB support, making data available to Windows-based desktop applications in a table format using SQL commands. Starting with PHD 210, a .NET development interface is available to build modern applications leveraging PHD’s extensive history.

User-Friendly Desktop Tools

Uniformance PHD provides productivity tools that retrieve, display, analyze and report process data. Uniformance Process Studio users can view process data as trends, graphical displays and tables, and organize information to ensure productivity.

A companion add-in for Microsoft Office Excel delivers flexible data analysis and visualization. Integration with well-known Office components ensures that even a novice user can become productive quickly.

Migration to Uniformance R321 is seamless and easy with following advantages:

At one time, process historians were simply software packages used to store and present real-time process data. Today, however, historians are being used to do much more.

Process historians are being used to store ever-increasing amounts of big data originating from a much wider variety of sources, including control and monitoring, laboratory information management, enterprise resource planning (ERP), and asset management systems. Organizations are also using them to transform this and other data into actionable information to implement and improve equipment diagnostics, maintenance, safety, alarms, production, performance, and other process plant activities. Finally, historians are an essential part of integrating the enterprise, acting as a hub to distribute this information throughout the enterprise in various formats via company intranets, the Internet, and the cloud.

This blog explores the changing role of process historians and illustrates how these concepts are being used in process plants worldwide with application examples.

Deluge of data

At one time, historians were fed data primarily by the process control system, usually a distributed control system (DCS). Older historians relied on a proprietary database, which often limited user access and made it difficult to interface with other plant information systems. Now, thanks to more universal and open interface technologies-such as OPC, Ethernet, and SQL-many more external systems can send and access historian data (figure 1).

Advances in the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), including the increasing popularity of ISA100 wireless instrumentation, provide another source of data. If a plant has 100 ISA100 transmitters, each broadcasting once every six seconds, the historian could receive tens of thousands of data points every hour. These data points include the process variable, diagnostics, alarms, and events.

Modern historians no longer rely on a simple proprietary database stored on a local computer to deal with this big data. New SQL-based deployment architectures now support the cloud and centralized and decentralized architectures-and can consolidate data from local to corporate-level historians.

Various data-handling techniques are employed to deal with this big data, including filtering, time stamping, and combinations of flat-file and relational databases. For example, many of the data points coming from wireless instruments rarely change; therefore, the historian stores only those variables changing outside a predefined range, a form of reporting by exception. Devices themselves are becoming more intelligent, and with edge computing only the data that is of importance is given to the historian.

Data to actionable information

In the past, data from historians was primarily used to analyze processes and control functions. Engineers would write software to generate trends and graphs, and then try to visually analyze this process historian data to spot anomalies and areas for improvement. Spreadsheet software was the tool of choice, but it took a lot of work and expertise to make this general-purpose tool perform this specialized task. In many cases, data scientists had to be engaged to assist.

Now that data in modern historians is more readily available via the use of standard SQL structures and open interfaces, it is possible to use commercially available software for analysis and reporting, integrating with corporate standards and removing the need for specialist skills. Historian suppliers and system integrators have created a wide variety of specialized analysis packages (figure 2) for alarm management, safety system monitoring, asset management, mass balancing, off-sites management, and power and energy consumption. In many cases, these application packages were developed by suppliers and users to solve specific end user problems and challenges, and then they were made into universal solutions available to other users.

Distributing information

Thanks to the cloud, IIoT, and open interfaces, historian data can now be made available to anyone and any software system with proper access credentials. As shown in the applications section, historian data can be viewed locally, globally, and from centralized locations. For example, a dashboard display for an alarm monitoring application allows engineers to "drill down" into alarm activities. Clicking one of the colored discs in a heat map might take the user to the chattering alarms report, prefiltered for the day of interest. The user can continue to drill down until ultimately the raw alarm and events are displayed, which can be used for root-cause analysis and displaying filtered events before, during, and after an alarm incident.

This capability allows engineers at a central location to monitor conditions from company sites all over the world-but it also allows engineers at each plant to see the same data as it applies to their specific plant.

In addition, users are no longer limited to accessing historian data via a local PC. Data can be viewed on any desktop PC, laptop PC, smartphone, or tablet connected to the corporate intranet or to the Internet (figure 3).

What is possible with today's historians? With the availability of application packages and open interfaces, virtually any kind of analysis of plant data is now possible, as shown in the examples below.

Alarm management at a gas field

In Europe, a large facility extracting gas from dozens of widely dispersed well heads and tank farms is fully automated. Each well head or tank farm is linked to a central control and monitoring center to form one of the largest distributed control systems in the world.

The facility, with more than 750,000 potential alarms, requires an alarm management solution for safe, effective, and efficient operation. The alarm management system has to be used by all plant personnel, including operators, engineers, and managers. Alarm reporting and analysis is used to help identify and eliminate faulty and incorrectly configured alarms, reducing the number of alarms presented to an operator.

The well heads and tank farms are linked to the central monitoring and control center via seven Web servers. A process historian monitors the 750,000 potential alarms, analyzes how operators respond, and produces reports (figure 4) at the end of each shift to show:

  • standing alarms at the end of a shift
  • top 10 alarms by number of occurrences during the shift
  • alarms suppressed by an operator at the end of the shift
  • alarms in calibration at the end of the shift
  • mean alarm rate for the shift
  • alarm rate distribution by the clock hour

Weekly and monthly summary reports are available for management and planning meetings. The alarm management solution follows EEMUA 191 and ANSI/ISA-18.2 guidelines.

Valve travel times

At a large oil production facility, reports on high-integrity pressure protection system (HIPPS) activations were being generated with a custom application package running on a legacy DCS, which needed to be replaced. The company wanted a standardized solution independent from the DCS, so that it could be implemented across many locations with minimal configuration at each site.

The DCS-independent historian solution receives sequence of events (SOE) data from the HIPPS to generate HIPPS activations and event travel time reports. This solution has been deployed at two sites so far, each with a different DCS. At one site, the SOE data is collected through an OPC server connected directly to the historian. At the other site, SOE data is collected through the remote data synchronization application that provides a robust communication method to address low bandwidth and intermittent network connections.

All HIPPS activation and configuration data is stored in the process historian, with additional tables used to store intermediary report data. Reports at both sites are created with Microsoft Reporting Services. The reports are also available in PDF format to facilitate review and distribution among multiple teams.

Analyzing alarms, events, and PID control data

An agribusiness group wanted to analyze alarms and proportional, integral, derivative (PID) controller performance for 10 of its production plants worldwide from a cloud-hosted centralized control center. It needed to analyze alarm performance and improve the operation of its PID controllers from its headquarters and continue to access plant information locally. The 10 plants had control systems from five different vendors. A historian was deployed in a cloud-hosted environment (figure 5) to provide the required solution.

Data from all plants is consolidated in a single cloud-based historian via a secure and reliable data transfer method. For alarm and events data, the historian collects process data and alarms and events from each plant's control system. The solution enables alarms and events to be collected and monitored for each plant, and includes report generation and key performance indicator (KPI) data for further analysis from the centralized control center.

PID loop performance and alarms and events are displayed in a combined Web-based dashboard, providing a single display of key data for each site. The global plant management team now has a complete overview of each plant's status, and can analyze performance and identify operational improvement opportunities.

Analyzing plant data across multiple sites lets organizations benchmark processes and equipment using real plant data for comparison and assessment. Additionally, this information helps establish best practice processes, which are applied across all sites to help identify and set attainable targets and evaluate overall performance.

Measuring safety systems

An ultra-deep-water production platform needed to monitor and record all safety KPIs and to record safety and performance information. It needed a repository for all trips and operational statistics, covering all safety instrumented systems, to measure actual performance against the original safety design.

The historian, located offshore, acquires data from the platform's DCS, safety instrumented systems, emergency shutdown systems, and fire and gas systems. The historian stores all relevant safety-related data. All essential safety-related KPIs and statistics are validated and available in a single location. Without this solution, it would be very difficult and time consuming to consolidate, view, and analyze this data.

Safety systems need to have proof tests at various intervals to demonstrate that each component or subsystem is operational, such as a valve activation. The system can show that actual activations were successful and can be used to verify that the safety system is working correctly while it is operating-eliminating the need for further proof tests requiring shutdown. This reduces the number of plant startups and shutdowns required for scheduled testing.

This proof testing and safety trip data provides design input for layer of protection analysis (LOPA) and safety case updates, showing the true demand rates and helping identify scenarios and the frequencies of events. For each safety loop, statistical data and reports illustrate the true demand placed on that loop over a number of years. This historical data has actual field demand rates, and can be used to validate the safety case against the original design assumptions that were based on calculations.

Traditional historians were proprietary, closed systems used primarily to view and visually analyze process performance at a single site. Modern historians are open systems that work with any DCS or other data source, store data in open SQL Server databases and across the world in the cloud, and make data available to anyone, anywhere-as long as they have the proper security credentials.

Modern historians can also perform a variety of functions, such as alarm analysis, safety system verification, PID analysis, and energy monitoring. And instead of requiring companies to develop their own analysis software or hire data scientists, modern historians can be provided with or linked to specialized analysis application software.

Where Historians Work: An Interactive Database of History PhD Career Outcomes

Where Historians Work is an interactive, online database that catalogs the career outcomes of historians who earned PhDs at universities in the United States from 2004 to 2017. Powered by Tableau, Where Historians Work provides the fullest picture of PhD careers available for any discipline. This tool allows current and potential graduate students to understand the full scope of career options open to history PhDs and to research which departments best fit their values and goals, enables departments to better meet the professional development needs of their doctoral students, and documents the broad impact of doctoral education in history.

Where Historians Work was first released in 2018. At that time, the data set included career outcomes for the 8,523 historians who earned PhDs at PhD-granting universities in the United States from 2004 to 2013. In 2022, the AHA released four years of additional data, adding career outcomes for the 3,787 historians who earned PhDs at US universities from 2014 to 2017. 

Where Historians Work is a product of the AHA’s Career Diversity for Historians initiative, funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation .

The Where Historians Work database consists of two separate dashboards: one containing the 2004 to 2013 dataset and the other containing the 2014 to 2017 dataset. Each dashboard features seven interactive data visualizations. Toolbars near the top of the dashboards allow users to view career outcomes in the aggregate and filter the results by variables such as gender, graduation year, department, and field specialization. Many slides contain additional information that can be accessed by hovering your cursor over individual data points. The Where Historians Work dashboards are best viewed in a desktop browser in full screen.

• All PHD Data is referenced by tag name. Tag Ids (numbers) are used internally. Tag Ids cannot be reused.

• History is associated with the Tag Id. (When a tag is deleted from Sql Server, the Tag Id will not be reused.)

• Tag names can be the same as those used on the source system, or they can be different.

• Tag names can include a prefix and/or suffix - Ex. BB.F131.PV

- Parent Tags – templates which can be used when creating one of the other four classes of tags.

- Collected Tags – tags which store data collected from PHD interfaces.

- Manual Input Tags – tags which store data that is manually entered by a user.

- Virtual Tags – tags which provide data that is calculated based on collected tag values, manual input tag values and/or other virtual tag values.

- Stored Virtual Tags – tags which provide calculated data based on collected tag values, manual input tag values and/or other virtual tag values. This calculated data is then stored in the history archive.

• In general terms, class tags should be defined for each set of tags having similar data processing requirements. Many children per parent. No software limit to the number of levels, but Honeywell recommends no more than three; otherwise, it gets too complicated.

Class Tags and Inheritance

• Each tag's definition specifies what tag attributes are inherited from its

parent. The parent class-tag must be specifically defined for a tag.

• A class-tag may in turn inherit values from another class-tag.

• If a class-tag attribute is modified, any tags that inherit the attribute dynamically inherit the change. This permits the system to be configured with a set of intelligent default tag attributes.

• Initial tag definition as well as ongoing tag maintenance is simplified, as behavior of entire classes of tags can be altered by modification of the parent class-tag.

• On a per tag basis, users can override inherited tag definitions for tags that may have unique requirements within a class.

• You can identify Class tags any way you want. Class tags can identify tag types such as temperatures, orifice flows, set points, or tag usage such as optimization tags.

• If the active flag on a parent tag is enabled, it has no impact other than causing the parent tag to be displayed in Tag Explorer under the Parents folder.

What is USC ?

• This tool is a graphic replacement for PHDMAN – however far greater functionality than was available through PHDMAN is provided in USC.

• The tool provides access to all PHD Server services, their settings and ability to control the system remotely from the physical computer.

• Appropriate access privileges are required to control system and alter configuration settings.

• USC provides the ability to connect via the PHDStart service upon every computer where PHD Services are installed.

• Connections can utilize both trusted (automatically validating the user account logged in with) and untrusted (when the user passes a valid user account that can be validated) connections.

Excel Files.

• The add-in provides a drop-down menu and an optional tool

bar from which you can call a dialog box. You use the

dialog box to create a function in a cell that retrieves data.

The Excel Companion adds a „Uniformance‟ menu to standard Excel. Using this menu, PHD data, Event data, and LIMS data can be retrieved and placed on a worksheet. Once the data is on the worksheet, Excel functions can be used to analyze the data.
