Everything You Need To Know About Jewelry Making Findings And Beading Components

Jewelry Making Findings Explained

Jewelry findings is an all encompassing term for the components used to finish or enhance a jewelry design. 'Findings' or 'components' - is a collection of items. Clasps are considered findings. Crimps are considered findings. Ear wires and cones are considered findings. If you are looking for 'findings', you are looking to buy the components used to finish or enhance your jewelry.

Below, we will look at items that are considered findings and we will look at their unique uses and functions.

Soft Flex Crimp Tubes

Soft Flex Crimp Tubes

Crimp tubes are fundamental. They are the foundation every jewelry design is based upon. They provide a secure finish and attach your wire to the clasp. They can also be used to float beads on your wire and more.

Soft Flex Crimp Tubes are crafted with the professional in mind. We have constructed a crimp tube that is almost twice as thick as others on the market. The sturdier build of the crimp is enhanced by the fact that they are also seamless. Finish your next piece securely with our designer crimps. Available at Soft Flex Company in Sterling Silver, Gold Filled, Sterling Silver Black Oxidized or Copper.

Basic usage by wire diameter:

.010 Very Fine - Ideal for embellishing, weaving, crocheting and stringing very small beads. We suggest finishing with 1x1mm crimps. Micro Crimping Pliers are suggested to close 1x1mm crimps.

.014 Fine - Ideal for soft materials, seed beads and fresh water pearls. We suggest finishing with 2x2mm crimps. Regular Crimping Pliers are suggested to close 2x2mm crimps.

.019 Medium - Ideal all purpose wire. Great with glass, mineral, and metal beads. We suggest finishing with 2x2mm crimps. Regular Crimping Pliers are suggested to close 2x2mm crimps. For this diameter, you can also use 2x2mm crimps with Magical Crimping Pliers .

.024 Heavy - Ideal for abrasive materials, large stones, lamp work and bracelets. We suggest finishing with 2x3mm crimps. Regular Crimping Pliers are suggested to close 2x3mm crimps.

If you would like information regarding how many wires will fit through a particular size crimp, check out this page. This is a great reference if you are using larger crimps and creating a multi-strand necklace. Mighty Crimping Pliers are suggested for multi-strand designs.

Soft Flex Crimp Covers

Soft Flex Crimp Covers

We love the look of a finished crimp. The fold and curl of the metal that tells us our design is safe and secure. But, not everybody appreciates that finish, some designers and collectors would rather not see the nuts and bolts of a piece - crimp covers are the solution to that dilemma.

Crimp covers clamp down over finished crimps. They look great as part of a jewelry design. You can use crimp cover to conceal regular crimped tubes or tubes crimped with Magical Crimping Pliers. Magical Crimping Pliers eliminate the need for a cover – but if you would like to cover them, it is perfectly reasonable. Our crimp covers are a great highlight to any piece, they come in copper, sterling silver and gold filled.

Crimp Covers - Written by Gloria Dilworth on May 1st 2019 A welcomed addition to help complement your pieces. They blend in to give the illusion of another bead within the necklace, bracelet, or even earrings.

Crimp tubes and covers - Written by Catherine Cowen on Feb 28th 2019 I bought several different sizes and colors as well as the covers. Beautiful color and great quality. Still working on getting my magical crimpers to come out perfect but a few tries and I’ll be fine

Jump Rings

Jump rings are perfect for connecting a clasp, ear wire or pendant to your necklace, bracelet, anklet or earring. If you are a creative type, consider thinking outside the box and doing something unusual, they can be bunched together on a design to create a 'loose focal bead' and more.

Jump Rings can lengthen or shorten a design. They can be used to add a different clasp. They can be used to enhance a piece of jewelry and even make chain. Jump Rings offer a lot of flexibility when designing. There are two different styles of Jump Rings – open and closed. Closed Jump Rings are permanent on a design, there is no opening. Open Jump Rings can be opened and closed.

Split Rings

Split Rings

Split Rings and Jump Rings are very similar. They both have similar functions. The difference between the two is a Split Ring basically looks like a micro key chain. The ring is pulled open at the center to move it on to a design in the same way a key is added to a key chain. A pair of Split Ring Pliers is invaluable if you work with Split Rings (or have key chains). These pliers have a tooth that keeps the Split Rings open.

Spacer Beads

Spacer Beads

Spacer beads are a great design element. They are ideal for adding length to a piece. Spacer beads can also be used to bookend a focal bead or bead you want to highlight. Spacer beads can break up a color pattern or add some subtle sparkle to a design.

These seamless sterling silver beads are the perfect accent to a necklace using our Soft Flex Beading Wire.

Eye Pins

Eye pins are pins with an already-made loop on one end. They can be used to create jewelry links or components. Eye pins are also used in multi-strand pieces. Crimp each strand to the eye of the eye pin and pull through a cone. Connect the other end of the eye pin to your clasp by wire wrapping.

Head Pins

Head pins are similar to eye pins, except they have a flat head at one end, rather than a loop. The head can be used to stop a bead on the dangle and hold it in place. Wrap the other end to your design and you have a lovely focal bead. Head pins are perfect for making earring dangles, drops, and pendants.

Lobster Clasps

There are a variety of clasps out there. You can find some ornate clasps that can be part of your designs or basic clasps that do their job and do not really contribute to the aesthetic of the jewelry. Lobster clasps look like little lobster claws – they latch on to Jump Rings to finish a design. Designer clasps are the high end clasps that can be used as focal beads on a necklace or worn at the front, rather than hidden away at the back of the neck. Slide clasps slide in and out. There are multi-strand clasps for multi-strand jewelry designs. Toggle clasps are clasps with a large toggle that tucks into a hoop to close a jewelry design.

TierraCast Maker's Clasps

An easy design element to overlook when creating jewelry is the clasp. The focus in our craft is often on the beads comprising the piece and not the little details. Add a stunning clasp to your next project and you will be amazed at the professional finish.

Clasps come in lots of varieties: toggle clasps, lobster clasps, multi-strand clasps, and more. Finish your next jewelry design with a classy clasp!

Ear Wires And Earrings

Ear Wires

Ear wires are great for making quick earrings. Simply make a dangle with a head pin and attach to the loop at the bottom of the Ear Wire. Or, if you are feeling daring make a chain by linking components made with eye pins. The possibilities are infinite.

Ear wires can be elaborate or simple. They all work the same way, basically. Ear wires can be purchased or created with Soft Flex Craft Wire if you would like to personalize your earrings. Posts are similar to ear wires but do not dangle. There are also leverback ear wires for people that lose their earrings a lot. The leverbacks close so the earring cannot slip off.

Cones

Cones look stunning on the end of a multi-strand design. Whether you are using a Kumihimo Disk, a Macrame Board, a Kntting Spool, or just stringing with a lot of wire, a cone will wrangle your wire into a nice end, just before the crimp. Finish your next multi-strand design with a beautiful cone!

End Caps

End caps are great for knitted cord, Soft Flex Craft Wire, and Soft Flex Beading Wire designs. Large end caps can accompany a wide array of wire diameters and gauges. This cord end is perfect for larger braided designs made with our Kumihimo Disks. This cap will fit larger Viking Knit designs made with our Lazee Daizee tool.

Charms

Charms come in an assortment of sizes, colors, and themes. The vast amount of charm options available to a jewelry designer means that every design can be customized and made personal. Charms are likely one of the first beads a young beader will come across. Charms can define a childhood and be nostalgic.

Squaredelles

Crystal Squaredelles

Check out our Squaredelles line. Charms for the adult! Our line of Squaredelles is simply stunning. With spacer beads and matching clasps, you can create perfect designs. If diamonds are a girls best friend, crystals must be the runner up. These findings and beads are available in 3 finishes: black, gold and silver and a huge assortment of colors. Enjoy.

Our Squaredelles are a closeout item. Some items may be sold out. Once they are gone, they are gone for good - so hurry, supplies are limited!

Pendants and Centerpieces

Pendants and Centerpieces

Pendants are one of the earliest recorded forms of beads. The word pendant comes from a Latin word that means 'to hang down'. Pendants and centerpieces can be lockets, amulets, and talismans. They can be functional or aesthetic. They are designed to capture the eye and spark the imagination.

The Different Types of Jewelry Findings

what are bead findings

The Spruce / Lisa Yang

Findings are the name for a large classification of supplies that are used to connect or complete a piece of jewelry. This is a partial list of the various types of findings used in beaded jewelry making, with links to articles with more information and details.

Bead caps are a decorative metal finding that is typically placed on the end of beads. They come in a variety of sizes, shapes, and metals. Bead caps may be used to surround both sides of a bead or to cap one end as in an earring dangle.

The look of a bead cap will vary considerably depending on the size and shape bead it is paired with. Bead caps may also be used with beaded ropes or beaded tassels at the connection to a clasp or earring finding to help hide knots or thread.

Crimp Beads and Bead Covers

Crimp beads are used to secure the ends of beading wire to other findings such as a jump ring, clasp or earring wire. They come in two distinct shapes — crimp beads which are rounded and crimp tubes which are more cylindrical. They are closed using a special crimping tool or by flattening the crimp with pliers.

For a crimp to hold securely, it is important to know which size crimp to use for which size wire.

A crimp cover is a hollow decorative metal finding shaped like a C that can be closed around the crimp to make it look like a bead. They come in a variety of sizes and metals. They are fastened using chain nose pliers.

Clasps join the two sides of your necklace or bracelets. There is a huge variety of clasps available — from basics clasps like spring rings to more unusual clasps like tube and box clasps. The most important aspect of choosing a clasp is making sure it is suitable for the weight and type of jewelry it is securing.

Custom handmade wire wrapped clasps or beaded toggle clasps  are a great way to differentiate your handmade jewelry from mass-produced jewelry.

Headpins and Eyepins

Headpins and eyepins are made of wire and used to connect components or dangle beads in a variety of handmade jewelry.

Headpins have a flattened circle on the end. A variety called a ball headpin has a round ball on the end. Eyepins have a round loop that can be used to add dangles or connect to other beaded components or findings. Another variety is called a paddle headpin and it has a flattened paddle on the end. There are also headpins with more decorative embellishments on the end, like these spiral headpins.

You can make ball headpins using copper , sterling silver or fine silver wire with a creme brulee torch. Making eyepins is even easier — all you need is wire and round nose pliers. You can make paddle headpins by flattening the end of the wire using a hammer or tool.

Jump rings are metal loops with a cut area that are used to join jewelry components such as joining a chain to a clasp, ear wires to a beaded component or even to make jewelry components such as chain maille.

Choosing the right jump ring for your jewelry project is important to ensure quality and longevity.

The Beginners Guide to Jewellery Findings…

Before the basics….

‘Jewellery findings’ are the bare bones of any piece of jewellery. The term ‘findings’ is a collective way to describe any individual component that falls under this category.

Jewellery findings are used to link, hold, or secure jewellery items together to create a complete piece of jewellery.

Choosing which beads you like is often the easy part. Selecting the right findings, however, can be a difficult task for any beginner.

So, here is a full guide to all your jewellery findings and what they can be used for to get you started.

Crimp Beads

These handy little soft metal balls (or tubes) are designed to be squashed or (crimped) to secure end fastenings to nylon coated wire (also known as tiger tail) and other stringing materials unable to be knotted. The easiest way to use a crimp, is to thread your nylon coated wire or stringing material through the crimp bead & a jewellery clasp. Then pass the wire back down through the crimp to create a loop. Squash (crimp) your crimp to secure the wire.

Useful tools – Crimping Pliers or Flat Nose Pliers.

what are bead findings

Also known as clamshells due to their shell-like shape and the way cleverly encase your crimp like a tiny pearl. Calottes are a great alternative way to finish off your nylon coated wire creation and to enable you to add a clasp with ease due to their added loops.

Simply, thread the calotte over your wire before attaching your crimp to the wire and then you will be able to fold the calotte around your crimp to create an end fastening in which you can attach your clasp.

Crimp Covers

Basically, does what it says on the tin. These little crescent moon (or Pac-man) shaped findings are designed to be slotted and closed over your crimp to disguise the bare bones of your creation – especially great if you are planning on selling your jewellery or giving it as a handmade gift.

They can also be used to hide knots on elasticated bracelets.

Useful tools – Flat Nose Pliers

Wire Guardians

As you may have already guessed from their name, wire guardians are essentially little horseshoe shaped protectors for your nylon coated wire, they guard it from wear and tear overtime and are an excellent way to make your jewellery look polished and professional.

Using them is simple –  all you need to do is thread your wire up through one side and back down through the other, this creates your protective outer layer and will keep your jewellery looking its best for a lot longer.

what are bead findings

Extension Chains

Have you ever had a piece of jewellery you feel is just a tad too snug? Well, extension chains are the ideal way to resolve this problem. They can easily be attached with a jump ring and add an extra 1.5- 2 inches onto your necklace, bracelet, or anklet.

what are bead findings

Are soft wire pins with a flat disc, or sometimes a ball on one end. Headpins are used for projects you might want to dangle beads from, it might help to picture a dangly beaded earring.

Useful tools- Round Nose Pliers and Flush Wire Cutters.

what are bead findings

Soft wire pins, just like headpins, but instead of a flat disc on one end this has been replaced by a ready-made loop allowing you to create a link to attach multiple hanging components together.

Thread your bead(s) on to the pin leaving enough space (1.5cm should be enough) to make a loop at the other end using your round nose pliers and trim off any excess.

what are bead findings

Are one of the handiest and widely used of all the jewellery findings. These small metal rings can be found in a huge range of colours, sizes and thicknesses and are used as the link to attach other findings together. Jump rings have a small gap which can easily be twisted open and closed.

Top Tip – To avoid misshapen jump rings.  Never pull your jump ring open from side to side, always twist open and closed.

what are bead findings

Split Rings

The same as keyrings in appearance these are fantastic alternative to jump rings if you want to add a fun twist to your jewellery by adding an interchangeable option.

what are bead findings

Use through pierced ears. These are ideal for anybody who loves a dangly earring. Fishhooks have a loop at the bottom you can attach beads, charms, tassels, or anything else you feel demonstrates your personality.

Useful Tools: Flat Nose or Chain Nose Pliers

what are bead findings

Used through pierced ears. These have a flat head for gluing your designs. A great alternative if dangly earrings are not your thing.

what are bead findings

Jewellery End Fasteners

Are the bridge (with help from the jump ring) between your cord and your jewellery clasp, this is the piece you fold around or glue to your stringing material, depending on which cord is best for your project.

Box Closers

Made from metal and usually rectangular in shape with two fold-able wings, these are best used with round cord or thinner flat cord.

Simply place your chosen stringing material in the centre and fold your wings over the cord.

Useful Tools: Flat Nose pliers

what are bead findings

Ribbon Clamps

Flat and wide in appearance with little teeth for grip on the front edge. ribbon clamp findings are ideal for use with ribbon as the title would suggest and perfect for creating chokers. Personally, would usually fold the end of the ribbon over at least once before closing to make sure that the tiny teeth grasp onto the material

Useful Tools- Flat Nose pliers

Top Tip – you can always add a dab of glue to add extra security.

what are bead findings

Bell Closers

Shaped like a hollow bell with a loop on top, these cord ends are a great for gluing chunkier or multiple strands of cord/leather into and for all kinds of projects, especially Kumihimo braiding.

Jewellery Clasps

If you decide that you want to fasten your necklace, bracelet, or any other type of jewellery without just simply tying a knot, then ‘jewellery clasps’ are your next stop.  The style and size are completely personal preference depending whether you want to be understated and minimal or bold and eye catching.

Lobster/ Trigger Clasps

Probably the most popular type of clasp. You will see these on most pieces of jewellery in shops, aptly named due to its shape – the clasp resembles a lobster’s claw.

what are bead findings

Toggle Clasps

Come in 2 parts usually a variation on a ring and bar combination, however there are many elaborate designs if you are looking to make a statement.

what are bead findings

Magnetic Clasps

Come in lots of shapes and a wide range of sizes, these are perfect for anybody who struggles with fiddly little clasps. Magnetic clasps allow you to take jewellery on and off with minimal effort.

Top Tip – make sure the magnetic you choose is strong enough to hold the beads of your jewellery. Heavy beads will require a strong magnetic grip.

The Ultimate Guide to Jewelry Findings

Clasps are essential for fastening your jewelry designs. Attach them to the ends of your necklaces, bracelets, and anklets for a polished and professional finish.

what are bead findings

Lobster Claw

Lobster claws are one of the most commonly used clasps in jewelry design. They are very secure, easy to use, and work well with necklaces and bracelets.

what are bead findings

Spring Ring

Spring rings function similarly to a lobster claw, but can be a bit harder to open and close. Use them for dainty pieces where it’s important to have a small clasp.

what are bead findings

A tag can be used in place of a jump ring at the end of a necklace or bracelet for a polished finish.

what are bead findings

Toggles are great for bracelets, and can even add a decorative element to your design. They are best used on bracelets, but can also be used on necklaces with chunky beads.

what are bead findings

A hook and eye clasp is easy to use, especially for those who struggle to open lobster clasps. Since they do not latch closed, it’s best to use them on heavier necklaces.

what are bead findings

S-Hook An s-hook works just like the hook and eye, except it hooks into jump rings instead of an eye piece. It’s best to use these on heavier necklaces since they do not latch closed.

what are bead findings

Barrel Clasp A barrel clasp features a screw mechanism to open and close the clasp. They are easy to use, but are not as secure as a lobster claw.

what are bead findings

Ball and Hitch Clasp A ball and hitch clasp works just like a snap button. Line up the circles on either side of the clasp and snap them together. They are easy to use, but not as secure as a lobster claw.

what are bead findings

Magnetic Magnetic clasps are incredibly easy to use, and are great for those who struggle to open and close small clasps, but they should only be used on lightweight projects unless using a safety chain.

what are bead findings

Slide clasps are great for multi-strand necklaces and bracelets. They feature a spring friction mechanism and simply slide apart to open.

Filigree clasps are traditionally used on pearl necklaces and bracelets. One side of the clasp has a small hook that fits into the other side of the clasp and latches closed.

Using the correct earring finding is important for both the comfort of the earring and the design aesthetic.

Fish Hook/French Earwire French ear wires are generally the most common earring finding. They come in many different styles, or you can make your own with wire.

A ball post is an earring post with a small metal ball at the front of it. They can be plain or decorative, and usually have a ring to attach chain or wire wrapped dangles.

A glue on post allows you to turn small objects into post earrings. Use them on cabochons, wood, polymer clay, etc. Be sure to use a strong epoxy glue for a secure bond.

what are bead findings

Lever backs are a comfortable and secure option for a dangle earring. The hinge mechanism keeps the earring from falling out of the earlobe, and the elongated shape offers a petite dangle look.

what are bead findings

Kidney ear wires are great for earrings that you want to hang lower on the ear but not add extra weight and bulk. Slide dangles or charms on and off for an interchangeable design.

what are bead findings

Slide beads onto the beading hoop and bend the straight end of the wire at a slight angle so it goes through the pre-made loop. Hoop findings can also be used to make wine glass charms.

what are bead findings

Use a clip on or screw on earring finding to make earrings for people who do not have an earring piercing. They can also be used to convert existing earrings.

A threader earring features a post with a long, thin chain attached to it that threads through the earlobe. There is usually a loop at the end of a chain to attach dangles.

An ear nut goes on the back of a post earring to hold the post in place. If purchasing the ear nut separately from the post, make sure you have the correct size that will fit snug on your post.

Jump rings are one of the most basic findings you’ll need in jewelry making. They can be purchased in just about any size and thickness, open or soldered closed. Use them to attach clasps to your designs, hang pendants, earring dangles, connect links, etc.

what are bead findings

An open jump ring is a round wire ring with a small open seam. Use two flat nose or chain nose pliers to carefully link together your pieces.

what are bead findings

Oval jump rings tend to be more secure than round open jump rings as it’s more difficult for the attached findings to slip out of the opening.

Closed jump rings are identical to open jump rings but the seam has been soldered closed. Use them at the end of your design for hooking s-hooks, lobster claws, and spring rings into.

what are bead findings

Most commonly used for key chains, split rings are used when a more secure hold is needed for your jewelry designs. Use a split ring tool to hold part of the coil open while you slide the ring on to the connecting piece.

Crimping/Finishing

A professional finish to your jewelry designs is the key to making a durable and polished piece.

what are bead findings

Crimp Beads A crimp bead is a rounded, pliable piece of metal that is made to be compressed on beading wire to hold beads in place. To flatten the crimp, gently squeeze it with chain nose pliers.

what are bead findings

Crimp Tubes Crimp tubes tend to be more secure than crimp beads because you crimp them twice instead of one time with regular crimp beads. 1mm, 2mm, 3mm are the most common sizes. Use the Beadalon crimping tool to crimp 2mm crimp tubes on most projects.

what are bead findings

A crimp cover is a clamshell-like piece of metal that wraps around the crimp tube or bead after it has been crimped. Use flat nose pliers or the tip of your crimping tool to carefully close the cover until it looks like a round ball.

what are bead findings

After adding a crimp tube to the end of your design, add a wire guardian to cover the section of beading wire that loops through your clasp, then feed it back down through the crimp tube and crimp. The guardian protects the beading wire from rubbing on the clasp or jump ring and adds a polished look to your piece.

what are bead findings

Bead Tips   Bead tips (or knot covers) are great for finishing silk thread or cording projects. String the bead tip onto the end of the thread and make a knot to secure it inside of the cup. Add a drop of glue to the knot and then close the cup with pliers, hiding the knot.

what are bead findings

Glue in End Caps Use an epoxy glue or E6000 to glue your cord ends into the cap. Make sure your cord fits snug inside the tube so there is plenty of surface area to hold the glue securely.

what are bead findings

Also called a loop crimp, these findings are a crimp tube/jump ring hybrid. Insert your wire into the end and use your crimping tool to secure.

what are bead findings

Memory wire end caps add a more polished look to your memory wire designs. Use sandpaper to rough up the end of the memory wire, and then use a strong epoxy glue to insert the memory wire into the half-drilled hole on the cap.

what are bead findings

Fold over cord ends are great for flat pieces of leather or ribbon. For extra security, add a drop of glue on the flat surface of the crimp and lay your material down on top of the glue. Make sure you choose a fold over crimp that is close to the width of your material. Use flat nose pliers to carefully fold one side of the crimp on top of your material, and then fold the other side on top to make a flat crimp.

what are bead findings

Also called a C-Crimp, use these for attaching a clasp to flat ribbon or leather. Make sure you choose a crimp that is the same width as your material. For extra security, add a drop of glue on the inside of the crimp. Insert your material, and close the metal securing your material inside.

what are bead findings

Spring cord ends are an economical solution for finishing off round leather or cord pieces. Bend in the bottom wire on the coil to hold in place.

what are bead findings

French wire is typically used with silk thread to protect the thread where it would rub on the metal clasp. Add a small section of french wire to the end of your design, add your clasp, then bring your silk thread back through the last bead on your design and form a knot. The metal wire also gives the silk thread a polished look around the clasp.

what are bead findings

Headpins have a small flat “head” at one end of the wire to hold a bead in place. Headpins are generally used for creating wire wrapped loops and dangles.

Ball Headpins function the same as a regular headpin, but they have a decorative ball or ornament at the base of the pin instead of a flat piece of metal.

what are bead findings

Eyepin Eyepins are similar to headpins but they have a loop at one end of the wire instead of a head. They are used for making links on earrings, necklaces, and rosaries.

Bails are used to hang focal beads or charms on a chain or necklace to make a pendant.

what are bead findings

Use a strong epoxy glue to attach a glue on bail to handmade pendants, cabochons, or other items to convert it into a pendant.

what are bead findings

A pendant bail allows you to convert a bead into a pendant that can easily slide on and off a chain. Use a heapin to make a wrapped loop and attach it to the bail, or use a jump ring to hang a charm from the bail.

what are bead findings

Pinch bails are great to convert donut shaped beads into pendants. Simply close the bail around the center of the donut using flat nose pliers.

what are bead findings

Spacer Bars

Spacer bars are used to keep your beads appropriately spaced out in multi-strand bead designs. They can be very simple and blend into your beaded design, or decorative to add a design element to your piece.

Bead cones can be used as another way to finish multi-strand pieces. Simply make a wire wrapped loop and crimp your strands to the loop. Then bring the other end of the wire up through the cone, and make another wrapped loop to attach your clasp. They can also be used as a bead cap to add a decorative element to dangle earrings.

Bead caps are purely a decorative element that can be used to spice up your designs. They are also handy for covering up imperfections on beads.

what are bead findings

Extension chains are usually a couple of inches long and come pre-cut with a small dangle on the end. Use them with a lobster claw or spring ring on a necklace or bracelet to make an adjustable design.

My World of Beads

Beading supplies

Beading supplies covers a wealth of information and it’s growing all the time! When I started out, I was overwhelmed by the different types of beads, thread and tools on the market. I had no idea what the differences were, or, in some cases, how to even use these things. Does this sound familiar? Then, I’m here to help.

In this section I explain everything related to beads, tools, stringing materials, wire, findings, etc. Even if you think you know beads, there are new beading supplies coming onto the market all the time. So, do have a browse here and you may find something you didn’t even know existed!

You can also join my ‘Better Beader’ mailing list to get great information delivered direct to your inbox every month.

beading supplies

If you hover over the ‘Beading Supplies’ item in the menu, you will see a drop-down menu appear. You can use that to find your way around the broad categories. Or, if you are looking for something specific, try heading straight to the search box (the little magnifying glass icon on the left of the top menu).

If you still can’t find an answer, you can use this link to ask your question and I will make it a priority to add some information for you.

What does beading supplies cover?

This is a pretty broad category. So, I have covered the obvious things like the beads themselves. Then we have materials for stringing them, like thread and wire. Also, findings – the clasps and metal bits you need for constructing jewellery. Then, of course, there are the tools you’ll need. And, finally, storage solutions to help you as your beading supplies grow in number.

Now, if you have even the slightest knowledge of beading, you probably know that there are a huge range of different types of beads, stringing materials, tools, etc. So, to help you discover things more easily, I have split all these areas into sections.

seed beads and cylinder beads

Do you have questions about traditional seed beads?

These are the little round beads and cylinder beads that we commonly use for bead-weaving. (Take a look at the left-hand photo, just above). They range in size from under 1mm to 3mm. They are basically round and they have just one hole through them.

So, these are the beads you are most likely to find yourself using a lot.

CLICK HERE TO FIND OUT ABOUT TRADITIONAL SEED BEADS

Do you need to find out about Multi-holed seed beads?

For a few years now, we have had a lot of new beads coming onto the market. This section looks at the beads that have more than one hole through them. Some have two holes per bead, some three holes, some even four. Probably the most widely-known and commonly used bead of this type is the Superduo. (See the central photo, above).

These beads are great for adding interest to your designs. So, if you would like to find out what is available, this is the place. I have described the beads, explained how to use them and given you some links to patterns you can try.

CLICK HERE TO FIND OUT ABOUT MULTI-HOLED SEED BEADS

Do you want information about Shaped seed beads?

This section covers the ‘new’ beads that are shaped. Typically, these are slightly larger in size – starting at 2mm and working up to 8mm, in general (although there are always exceptions!). The shapes vary from cubes, ovals, diamonds, squares, semi-circles, triangles… The list goes on and on!

Like the multi-holed beads, the shaped seed beads have been designed to add interest to your projects. You will commonly use them for bead-weaving. And I have explained what each bead is, how to use it and also linked to some projects for you to try.

CLICK HERE TO FIND OUT ABOUT SHAPED SEED BEADS

Do you want to find out about other beads?

This is where you will find anything that doesn’t fall into the categories above. Now, a lot of these beads are commonly used and widely known. I’m talking things like pearls, crystals, gemstones and wooden beads. You may also find lamp-work beads, polymer clay beads, and things like fabric beads and cabochons here.

These types of bead tend to be larger. Typically, you’re looking at 4mm and upwards. Some of these may be used for bead-weaving projects (in particular, pearls, crystals and cabochons). But if you’re looking to string beads and make jewellery that way, then these are the beads you are likely to be using.

how to choose beading thread

Do you need help finding some beading thread?

If you are using any bead-weaving techniques, you will be using thread to stitch your beads together. You may also use thread if you are trying techniques like bead embroidery, Kumihimo and stringing.

What you will quickly discover is that there is a HUGE variety of beading thread available. So, which type do you need? Well, this is the area to find out…

CLICK HERE TO FIND OUT ABOUT BEADING THREAD

Do you have questions about the best wire to use?

Some jewellery-making projects will ask you to string beads onto wire, not thread. You can also make jewellery using primarily wire – this is called wirework. And, if you fancy trying French beading to make 3-D flowers, you will also be working with wire.

Again, you have plenty of choices facing you. So, if you want a bit more information about how to choose the best wire for your project, this is the section to try.

what are bead findings

Are you struggling to choose or attach a clasp?

If you are going to make bracelets or necklaces, you will need a clasp to fasten them. It all sounds very simple, but what you will quickly realise is there’s a lot of choice. So, how do you know which clasp is right for your project? Well, this section explains what each type of clasp is and what kinds of jewellery it’s best for.

CLICK HERE TO FIND OUT ABOUT CLASPS

Do you want some help with other findings?

As you get into jewellery making, you will discover there are a whole lot of other small metal pieces you’ll be asked to use. These are collectively called, ‘findings’ (clasps also fall into that category). They are things like jump rings and split rings, ear wires, crimps, end caps… It’s a long list!

So, if you want to begin discovering these elements for your jewellery making…

CLICK HERE TO DISCOVER THE OTHER FINDINGS

Are there other beading materials that you need to know about?

If you are wanting to learn a specialist beading technique, like bead embroidery, or French beading, then there will be some other materials that you’re going to need. These are things that aren’t covered under the categories or beads, or findings, or wire and thread. So, if you need to find out about these, then this is the area to visit.

CLICK HERE TO FIND OUT ABOUT OTHER BEADING MATERIALS

Beading Scissors, how to cut beading thread, My World of Beads

If you’re going to use all these materials, then you will also need to understand about the specialist tools. This covers everything from needles and scissors to wire cutters, pliers and other tools. It also looks at the basics like beading mats, magnifiers and daylight lamps. All of these are helpful when working with beads.

Do you need to know about Bead-weaving tools?

Your basic bead-weaving tool kit is a beading mat, needle and scissors. But guess what? You have a lot of choices here too. So, this section explains what those choices are and will help you to find the things that are right for you.

CLICK HERE TO FIND OUT ABOUT BEAD-WEAVING TOOLS

Do you need some help choosing the right Pliers?

If you are going to be making jewellery, or doing French beading or wirework, then you will find yourself using a different range of tools. These are mostly pliers, in different shapes and sizes. So, you have pliers with round noses, pliers with flat noses, pliers specially designed for making crimps…

Again, lots of choice! So, where do you start? Well, this section will introduce you to the different types of pliers and explain where and when you might need to use them.

Do you need help with other tools for beading and jewellery making?

Then, there are the other tools that you might come across at different stages. These could include things like a magnifier to help you see your work. If you’re doing French beading, then you’ll want a bead spinner. Kumihimo disks for Kumihimo, etc.

So, have a look through this section for anything that you can’t find in the other beading tools.

Susannah's bead storage space

Are you looking for bead storage solutions?

Lastly, as your beading supplies grow, you will need somewhere to store them. So, this section looks at bead storage solutions. I cover everything from custom-made bead storage, to household items you can use if you’re on a budget.

CLICK HERE TO BROWSE BEADING STORAGE SOLUTIONS

If you’re looking to find out how to use your tools and materials, then head over to the beading techniques section to start learning. As you browse the beading supplies section, you will see I have included links to projects you can try. So, if you’re already familiar with your beading techniques, you can grab a project and start beading.

Hi Katie, I have just tried to access the “specialist tools “page but it doesn’t seem to be there ( it is Sunday, it may be having a siesta ).

' src=

Hi Heather, thanks for letting me know about that. The page has now been woken up since it’s Monday morning! (I hope!) If you have trouble finding any other pages on the site due to dodgy links, you can search through all the pages in the Beads Index (in the top menu, or link here: https://www.myworldofbeads.com/beads-index/ ). It’s also a useful reference for seeing everything that’s on here as well. Thanks again, Katie

' src=

Hey Katie; I’m looking for where I can get yardage if the velour (Vellux?) fabric used in beading boards, and wondering if you know a seller. I am designing cases for sensitive instruments (photographic, lighting) and this seems like the perfect thing. But, the tiny bead matt sheets are waaaaaay too small. Any help with a supplier – retailer or wholesales – would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Andrea

Hi Andrea, it sounds like that fabric would be ideal for your case linings. I’m afraid I don’t know of a wholesaler. The biggest mats I’ve managed to get are 13″ by 18″ and they were Beadsmith brand, sold by CJ Beaders, I think. Possibly that’s still not big enough for your needs. It might be worth contacting the Beadsmith to see if they can help (they are a wholesaler, but may be able to answer your question). Sorry I don’t have anything more helpful to offer at the moment, but good luck in your search.

I’ve dealt with Crystal Findings Inc for more than 15 years. They get my orders out efficiently and it’s always precise and to the point of what I want. They do followups to get feedback which is nice. The price is average to lower than average. I like that it’s small and everyone knows everyone by voice when you call. It’s very personal, which is nice.

Our stainless steel chain and findings are made from 316 Stainless Steel, which exceeds both the Mayo Clinic and EU Nickel Directive recommendations for Hypoallergenic Jewelry and makes for a metal that is strong, durable, lead-free, and very resistant to corrosion or tarnish.
