The Language of Collapsing Power: A Cognitive-Lingusitic Critical Discourse Analysis of the Arab Spring Speeches of Mubarak

Repository uri, repository doi.

This thesis problematizes how power was represented, marked, negotiated, then stripped down, in the speeches delivered by the ousted Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak, during the Arab Spring Revolution in Egypt.

Seven linguistic, paralinguistic, cognitive-linguistic, argumentative, and multimodal features have been investigated and triangulated systematically as markers of power: deixis, presupposition, frames, hidden dialogicality, logical fallacies, stumbles, and backdrops. The thesis is organized into seven chapters, in addition to an introduction and a conclusion. The first chapter lays necessary theoretical foundations and proceduralizes core methodological operationalisations. The second, third, and fourth chapters investigate the first, second, and third speeches of Mubarak, respectively. Within that context, Chapter Two introduces the new pragmatic concept of Classifying WE, which accounts for the ‘problematic’ behaviour of the political pronoun WE pragmatically, by not considering it a random, contradictory, flat, circular construct, as the ‘Wandering WE’ (Petersoo 2007) argues, but as a strategic, systematic, complex, hierarchical structure that encodes sets of multiple referents and social actors, ranked at varying levels of power or submission and inclusion or exclusion. Chapter Five introduces the new pragmatic notion of Nested Presuppositions (NestPs), which characterises the discourse of Mubarak, and develops a relevance-theoretic model that explains its manipulative information structures and cognitive processing dynamics. Chapter Six compares the three speeches intertextually, on the afore-mentioned five levels, and contrasts Mubarak’s language of power, i.e. his pre-Arab Spring discourse, with his language of collapsing power, i.e. his Arab Spring speeches. Chapter Seven problematizes power as control and traces the mechanisms of text, context, and mind control exercised by Mubarak, in an attempt to develop a typology of his language of collapsing power.

This thesis has attempted to add three theoretical and methodological contributions to knowledge: it has established a transdisciplinary, harmonious, and fruitful dialogue among disciplines that have long been considered discordant, i.e. Cognitive Linguistics, Critical Discourse Analysis, and Argumentation (Heart 2011: 174; Nunez-Perucha 2011: 97-100), and has introduced the two new cognitive-pragmatic notions of Classifying WE and Nested Presuppositions, which have so far been applied successfully to two other corpora of presidential speeches, proving that both concepts can be nominated as global analytical tools in Cognitive Linguistics and Critical Discourse Analysis.

PhD Dissertation: Discourse Analysis of Legal Discourse with Reference to Dickens, Cozzens, Kafka, Lee, and Melville

Profile image of Heba M . I . M . Enein

Critical Discourse Analysis is a theory that examines and analyzes power asymmetry in discourse. It depicts instances of injustices in social interaction, and aims at raising people’s consciousness of them. Hence, it is a democratic approach to language. The thesis sets to apply this theory to legal discourse, in an effort to shed light on the linguistic forms that create an unequal balance of relations between professionals and non-professionals in English and Egyptian laws. For this particular purpose, English and Arabic legal texts, laws, statutes and trials are examined from the semantic, syntactic, and pragmatic points of view, following a Critical Discourse Analysis framework. Moreover, the thesis undertakes to prove that literary trials are equal to real ones, as far as this theory is concerned. Thus, English and Arabic literary trials are also analyzed. The legal discourses in both languages reveal great similarity in the contents of laws, being tools of social justice, and the linguistic means to accomplish such social goals. In addition, the literary works, under study, show the commitment of writers to follow real legal linguistic forms in their works, hence, there is no literary discourse per se; rather it is a true representation of reality. The thesis offers different recommendations to alleviate power asymmetry in legal encounters, and to raise people’s consciousness of their laws and rules. Of these suggestions are: teaching laws in universities and projecting different legal programs on TV, which could guide people to act properly in awkward situations

Judgment is closely connected with language, its questioning, answering, meaning and interpretation. Forensic linguistics for its application in real life and for its involvement in the field that is capable of influencing the course of one’s life has become a very interesting and pragmatic discipline to study; however, one that is still not very widespread in the Iran academic setting. This paper aims at providing an insight of how language operates in the legal setting by building bridges between cooperative principles and speech acts in forensic linguistics. This study is an initial attempt to investigate the relationship between violation of Gricean quantity maxim by more than 50 defendants (half of the cases incriminated and half of them acquitted) in relation to different speech acts which are used by interrogators in criminal courts. This study is based primarily on written and terminated documents from judiciary files. Data for this study is collected through Iran's judicial courts. This study aims to show how maxim of quantity is violated in criminal cases (incriminated or acquitted) in relation to different speech acts. The analysis shows that quantity maxims’ violation has correlation with criminal convictions in relation to different speech acts. Keywords: Judgment, Forensic Linguistics, Discourse of Law, Cooperative Principles, Speech Acts, Criminal Conviction and Acquittal.

It has already been some time now since the theory and method of Law and Literature first developed the narrative model for analyzing legal and literary sources. This model, founded on a view of man as homo narrans, describes a tendency to observe the law as narrative, applying this idea equally to law and to any other product of culture. Thus literary narrations (as well as ones from the nonliterary arts) have been considered not only as a mirror in which law is critically reflected, but as tools useful in bringing to us what may be described as “law’s unheard voices.” It is mainly along this line investigation that the narrative approach has developed in the United States, as a technique by which to construct alternative stories - based on personal experiences, whether real or fictional—to be brought into comparison with law’s “official” narratives. Looking at these “alternative” and “official” texts in comparison has made it possible to show that the law is itself narrative, such that law has no claim to objectivity and cannot invoke a single, universalizing discourse; but even more so, we have learned from this comparative study that the narrative which law consists of has shut out the perspective of minority groups. It is these concerns that form the backdrop against which the storytelling movement has sprung up, and its aim remains that of putting the narratives and claims of the weak on an equal footing with the law’s narrative of the strong, in such a way as to encourage between them a dialogue and an exchange. We have seen in this sense numerous “legal” narratives put together by women and blacks, and generally by those belonging to groups having little protection: these stories draw on the theory of narrative to ground and develop a rights movement proper.Of course, the law which Law as Narrative looks at is the positive law, and the approach is thus concerned with formalized law (the law set down in the law books), or with the law in the process of being formalized through the court’s activity, or with the unformalized law urged by those claiming rights and a corresponding status that they feel they are legitimately entitled to.But Law as Narrative has some further potential still waiting to be developed. I thus propose here to develop the idea of law as narrative working from a conception of law that takes into account not only positivized law but also the law permeating the fabric of social relations. And so we have to do here with law such as it manifests itself in culture understood in an anthropological and sociological sense. The discussion will revolve around rights and rules, and not just law; and it will also take into account such rules as can exist and can be pronounced only as possible, which is what Carbonnier meant by nonlaw: together with law, nonlaw forms part of that broader legal realm inclusive of social life which Carbonnier refers to as juridicite.Culture is understood as a symbolic universe that provides the meanings necessary for mediation, but it is also the space where the function is carried out (among others) of bringing order to social relations, and this function reveals itself in the process whereby we create and affirm (as well as reaffirm and recognize) rules of behaviour that stabilize mutual expectations in such a way as to enable coexistence when the social order weakens. In this broader sense, then, any narration that has a role in helping to establish an order in the realm of the symbolic can be considered a legal narration.I thus propose here to do two things, in short: (1) to work out and defend a theory of legal narration; and (2) to offer a model for analyzing narrations, making it possible to fruitfully understand the modalities and contents of the social function served by such legal narrations as are found not only in the “official” texts of positive law but also in the “texts” produced by the other arts.

The article proposes the discursion of what legal language is worth-its orality and its writing, support pillars of this field, which the Law Enforcement agents use in their profession to be well understood and thus win the case with the thesis presented in proceedings. What would be the characteristic of this profession? The need for conviction-a major tool of all those who take on the firm purpose of achieving justice, by right. There are understandings and theses in young scholars and others not so much, of those who are present in Warat, Koch, Bakhtin, and Tercero, who are fundamental to this study, who draw up understandings regarding the conduct and use of legal language, its current peculiarities and its traditions with a force of immutability, but that makes the legal work-teaching or militant, the differential of the operators that know and dominate and those who only observe.

Background: A body of research exists that investigates the representation of migrant populations in news media texts. This study extends the scope of inquiry towards the capacity for the discursive construction of social actors to shape readers’ emotional and cognitive responses of compassion. Aims: The aims of the study are to both understand how Syrian refugees, asylum seekers, immigrants and migrants (RASIM) are discursively constructed in UK newspaper reports, and establish how these representational strategies function to construct Syrian RASIM as deserving of compassion or otherwise. Methodology: The study combines the research disciplines of linguistics and the health and social sciences in a corpus assisted critical discourse analysis of UK newspaper reports about the Syrian refugee crisis published between October 2014 and September 2016. Analysis is aided by theories of both compassion and desert. Findings: RASIM are represented first and foremost as an overwhelming global problem and within a dominant frame of immigration. They are positioned at either extreme of a continuum of threat according to a socio-political debate about immigration, from which their voices are excluded. Their position on the continuum indicates them as either deserving of compassion or otherwise by virtue of their relational threat to other social actors. Conclusions: The findings of this study demonstrate how the ways in which RASIM are represented can function to align readers with social actors or create distance between them on emotional and cognitive levels. Judgements about whether or not people deserve compassion for their suffering, offer implications for how people subsequently respond both socially and politically. Compassion provokes prosocial actions intended to alleviate suffering, whilst the absence of compassion leads to either inaction or acts of self preservation.

A discourse analysis of Philippians : method and rhetoric in the debate over literary integrity.

--> Reed, Jeffrey T (1996) A discourse analysis of Philippians : method and rhetoric in the debate over literary integrity. PhD thesis, University of Sheffield.

The first part of this work sets forth a workable hermeneutic of linguistic discourse analysis for Hellenistic Greek texts. The second part applies this model to Paul's letter to the Philippians with respect to the issue of its literary integrity. Does the canonical Philippians represent one original letter written by Paul or a later compilation of two or more originally separate letters? Chapter 1 introduces the linguistic theory of discourse analysis, defining key terms, sketching its historical evolution, and outlining four major tenets: (i) analysis of the production and processing of discourse; (ii) analysis beyond the sentence; (iii) analysis of social functions of language use; and (iv) analysis of cohesiveness. Chapter 2 sets forth a model of discourse analysis primarily based on the systemic-functional theories of M. A. K. Halliday, with particular attention given to the three meta-functions of language- ideational, interpersonal, and textual. Chapter 3 outlines the debate over the literary integrity of Philippians by discussing the origin of the debate, its subsequent development, and its current status. Evidence is then presented from both sides of the debate, revolving around five key issues: (i) the transition to Phil 3; (ii) the so-called `thank you' note in 4: 10-20; (iii) other internal linguistic evidence; (iv) external, extra-biblical sources; and (v) the redactor's motives. Chapter 4 inspects the genre (structure) of Philippians, challenging rhetorical approaches to the text and proposing instead an epistolary classification, viz. `personal, hortatory letter'. Each epistolary formula is then analysed, with special attention given to Phil 3: 1 and 4: 10-20, two highly disputed areas of the letter. Chapter five focuses on the language and grammar (texture) of the letter, investigating its use of ideational, interpersonal, and textual functions of Hellenistic Greek. In chapter six, relevant issues of biblical hermeneutics are addressed and a single-letter and a double-letter reading of the canonical text are set forth.
