The Berlin School of Economics offers excellent graduate training for junior economists.
The Hertie School collaborates with the Berlin School of Economics , a joint programme with Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Freie Universität Berlin, Technische Universität Berlin, the European School of Management and Technology (ESMT), WZB Berlin Social Science Center and DIW Berlin (the German Institute for Economic Research). It provides a structured career development programme for junior economists.
The Berlin School of Economics PhD Program unites the successful Berlin Doctoral Program in Economics and Management Science (BDPEMS) and German Institute for Economic Research (DIW) Graduate Center programmes and incorporates the best of both in a single career development programme.
The Berlin School of Economics offers four tracks: PhD in Economics and three business tracks (PhD in Accounting, PhD in Finance and PhD in Management).
The Berlin School of Economics has a separate application process. The application deadline for October 2024 intake is on 11 February 2024, 11:59 p.m. (CET).

I. Beginning your doctoral studies: Admission, enrollment and registration
Please find general information for doctoral candidates at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (HU Berlin) on our Doctoral Candidates Portal .
Please contact the PhD office of the faculty at which you would like to do your doctorate. Notice that there are no fixed deadlines for applying as a doctoral candidate. You get all necessary information on the application procedure directly there. Please find corresponding contact details on the websites of the faculties .
Please submit your application for admission exclusively to the PhD office at the faculty of your choice. Your application must contain all specified documents. Please note, if you have a non German university degree, your documents will be checked for equivalence with the German education system before the application procedure. Any coordination that may be necessary for this process is carried out between the faculty’s PhD office and the department for student services internally. We kindly ask you, do not send any documents to the enrollment office for doctoral studies before you received your admission by the faculty of your choice.
Please submit the enrollment form for PhD studies [ PDF ] and all the required documents as soon as possible, but no later than four weeks after you received the letter of admission from your faculty. If you are employed at HU and prefer to be only registered, please choose the registration-form for a doctorate [ PDF ]. Please send the filled out and signed form with all required documents to the following address
Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin Referat Studierendenservice Unter den Linden 6 10099 Berlin
or drop them into the mailbox at the Student Service Center (SSC) in the main building of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Unter den Linden 6, 10117 Berlin (Opening hours: Mon - Fri, 8 a.m. - 7 p.m.).
To keep the four-week deadline for enrollment/registration it is sufficient to submit the documents during this period to the enrollment office for PhD students.
Enrollment forms submitted digitally (e.g. as e-mail attachments) cannot be accepted for your enrollment.
You can only enroll for PhD studies after you have received your formal admission in a doctoral-study-program from the PhD office/PhD board of your faculty.
Enrolled doctoral candidates do have a student status and receive a student card (Campus-Card) but cannot receive the semester ticket for public transport. Enrolled PhD students have to pay the semester fees. Enrollment as a doctoral candidate is not contingent upon employment as a staff member at the HU Berlin.
However, if you are employed at HU, you have two options:
Either you enroll or you register for PhD studies. Registration is only possible as long as you are an employee/staff member at the HU Berlin. In case of registration, no fees or contributions have to be paid. But you do not have a status of a student at HU Berlin and cannot receive a Campus Card.
Differences between enrollment and registration for PhD studies
Please enroll for PhD studies within four weeks after receiving the letter of admission from your faculty and submit the following documents:
- the completed and signed enrollment form [ PDF ] incl. details on your educational biography,
- a simple copy of your admission letter from the PhD board,
- the payment confirmation of the semester fee (e.g. a simple copy of the bank transfer). You will find detailed information about the amount of semester fee which has to be paid for your enrollment below under "How much semester fee do I have to pay to be enrolled for PhD studies?".
- a simple copy of the de-registration certificate from your last German university (does not apply if you have never been enrolled at a university in Germany),
- a simple copy of your university entrance qualification (in most cases the secondary school certificate and/or university entrance examination),
- simple copies of your previous university degree certificates (German and/or foreign certificates),
- proof of a scholarship (if applicable).
How much semester fee do I have to pay to be enrolled for PhD studies?
Enrollment for the summer semester 2024 (01.04.2024 – 30.09.2024)
In the summer semester 2024, PhD students are not entitled to use the Deutschlandsemesterticket.
When enrolling from the beginning of the re-registration period for the winter semester 2024/25 (in the months of June, July, August and September 2024), we ask you to transfer the semester fee for the winter semester 2024/25.
Enrollment for the winter semester 2024/25 (01.10.2024 - 31.03.2025)
With the new Deutschlandsemesterticket contract, which was negotiated between the student body of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, represented by the Referent_innenrat (legally AStA), and the transport companies and comes into force on October 1st, 2024, the purchase of the Deutschlandsemesterticket is mandatory for PhD students.
Exemption from the enrollment fee (currently €50)
PhD students who receive a scholarship (e.g. from the DAAD) as part of funding programs that are financed exclusively or predominantly from public funds from the federal or state governments and who submit a proof of this for enrollment can be exempted from the fee for enrollment and re-registration, currently 50 € per semester, in accordance with Section 2 Paragraph 7 of the BerlHG ( § 2 Abs. 7 BerlHG ).
Please find detailed information about the composition of semester fees and contributions here:
https://hu.berlin/rueckmeldung
If you are employed at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and have chosen to register as a PhD student, please submit the following documents within four weeks after receiving the letter of admission from your faculty:
- the completed and signed application registration-form for PhD studies incl. details on your educational biography [ PDF ],
- a proof of employment at HU which contains the begin-date and the end-date of your employment (e.g. a copy of your employment contract),
- simple copies of your previous university degree certificates (either German and/or foreign certificates).
Please note that the enrollment office will not send you a confirmation that your documents have been received . The application deadline is met if your documents for enrollment or registration have reached the enrollment office within one month after your admission for PhD studies.
After we have received your documents, we will check them carefully. If any documents are missing, you will be informed by email or via mail and we will give you a deadline for submitting the missing evidence.
If you submitted all the required documents in full, you will receive a confirmation of completed enrollment/registration by e-mail. In addition, we will provide you with further information (in case of enrollment: e.g. how to create the Campus Card (student ID) or to activate the student HU account).
Please note that the processing of your application for enrollment or registration for PhD studies usually takes at least two weeks after the enrollment office has received all the required documents. Before the start of the semester or shortly after the semester start, there may be longer processing times.
II. During PhD studies: Re-registration, semester fees and semester ticket
Yes, re-registration for the next semester is mandatory. In order to retain your status as a doctoral student and to be able to complete your PhD studies, you must re-register within the re-registration period. Please note the information on the main deadlines for re-registration in your AGNES account and on our website for re-registration .
If you have appropriate reasons, you can apply for a leave of absence as a PhD student by using our application form [ PDF ]. For further information please visit our website .
However, the leave of absence has no influence on the standard processing time of your doctoral studies and your processing time will not be automatically extended for the duration of your leave of absence.
Please complete the extension form ("Bescheinigung über die Verlängerung der Regelbearbeitungszeit der Promotion" [ PDF ]) and have it signed by your PhD supervisor. Then send the signed form to the PhD office of your faculty. Please note that the PhD office may need additional documents from you. Contact the office for more information and procedure details.
If your request has been approved by the faculty’s PhD board, the PhD office will forward the signed form to the enrollment office for doctoral studies.
As a registration for PhD studies is only possible for the duration of your employment at the HU Berlin, you have to enroll as a PhD student after your employment relationship has expired. Please submit the application form for enrollment for PhD studies to the enrollment office. In addition, please submit a proof of payment of the semester fee, a proof of health insurance and an informal letter in which you inform us that you are currently registered for doctoral studies.
The amount of the semester fee depends on the date on which you apply to enroll for your doctorate.
If you apply for enrollment after the first month of the semester, the semester ticket fee only has to be paid pro rata from the month of enrollment.
If you enroll in the last three months of the semester (July - September and January - March), we ask you to transfer the semester fee for the enrollment semester as well as the re-registration fee for the following semester.
Please try to re-activate your HU account for students via our Computer and Media Service (CMS) to solve this issue. If this is not possible, please contact the enrollment office for generating a new PIN letter for re-activating your HU account for students.
Please note that a new PIN can only provided via a PIN letter send to you by mail.
III. Finishing your doctoral studies, de-registration
If you do not re-register for the upcoming semester, .e.g. not paying the required semester fee, you will be automatically de-registered (“Exmatrikulation”). If you would like to be de-registered before the end of the semester, please submit the application for de-registration [ PDF ] to the enrollment office for doctoral studies.
Please contact the PhD office of your faculty and clarify whether the enrollment is necessary to defend your thesis and proceed accordingly. If the regular processing time for your doctorate has expired, and you have submitted your thesis and you need to be enrolled in the upcoming semester, ask the PhD office to inform the enrollment office about this. After the enrollment office has received the confirmation from the PhD office and your payment of the semester fee has been received, we will re-register you.

PhD Fast Track
A quick start into your phd.
Thanks to a strong relationship with the Berlin School of Economics , our Master's in Public Economics offers courses from a renowned gradute school. The goal of the Fast Track is the promotion of motivated young scholars.
During your Master's in Public Economics, you can attend courses at the BSE. These courses can be acredited to your Master's as well as a future Doctorate at the BSE . You can attend courses from the first year of the BSE program, where you can network with doctoral students and get an early start on your Doctorate.
Do I have to formally apply to the BSE?
You can apply for a position for a spot in the Fast Track program at the BSE at the beginnning of your Master's. If you are accepted, you will benefit from the Workshops and Seminars offered by the BSE.
However, it is not necessary to apply for a spot at the BSE's Fast Track program, in order to take part in the Seminars. You have access to the Seminars offered in the Fast Track through your Master's in Public Economics. The courses you attend at the BSE can be credited to both your Master's and future PhD.
Information about applying to the BSE
What requirements are there for taking course at the BSE?
The first and only requirment for attending courses in the Fast track program during your Master's is being enrolled in the Master's in Public Economics. Other than this, you simply need to get permissionen from the course's lecturer to attend the course.
Which courses at the BSE can be accredited to my Master's?
In order for the course from the BSE's Fast Track to be accredited to your Master's, the courses must be within the course program of the Master's in Public Economics or the must fit within the spectrum of Public Finance/Economics. They can then be accredited as a free elective course.
How does the transfer from Master's to PhD at the BSE work?
Attending courses at the BSE is not a gurantee of a spot at the BSE. You need to apply to the BSE separately.
After being accepted to the BSE, the courses you took at the BSE will be accredited to you.
What courses does the BSE offer?
The webpages of the BSE and DIW GC provide a course program. If lecturers within our faculty are offering the courses, then there are no further steps other than registration over campus management. If you would like to attend courses not offered by our faculty members, then you should inform the Program Coordinator's Office . Links to the DIW and BSE websites are linked below.

General questions about the PhD Fast Track accrediting courses from the BSE can be answered by your Program Coordinator's Office . You can also contact the BSE directly.

Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin - School of Business and Economics
Admission to doctoral studies.
The formal basis of doctoral studies is constituted by the Doctoral degree regulations of the School of Business and Economics (May 21, 2010).
To register for doctoral studies at the School, please follow the following steps:
If you are pursuing a structured doctoral degree programme, you must conclude a written supervision agreement once you have been successfully admitted to the programme by the relevant office.
If you are pursuing an individual doctoral degree programme, you must conclude the supervision agreement with your supervisor directly.
After concluding your supervision agreement, you must submit an application for admission to doctoral studies to the Graduate Office of the School of Business and Economics. The following documents are required:
- application for admission to doctoral studies
- copy of the supervision agreement
- an up-to-date CV
- copies of all university degrees (bachelor's and master's degree certificates incl. transcripts)
All university degrees must also be submitted in the original or as officially certified copies.
Degrees obtained at non-German universities must undergo an "equivalence test". For this, the Graduate Office requires the degree certificates and transcripts in German or English, or in the original language together with an officially certified translation.
Please ensure that your application for admission to doctoral studies is completed in full and signed by your supervisor.
(1) Please submit all documents digitally in advance by email for a pre-check.

Becoming a PhD economist can provide a fulfilling and financially secure career path. However, getting started in the field can be daunting if you don’t know much about the preparation you’ll need and the available job opportunities. If you’re wondering what it means to be an economics researcher or how to become one, please read on. We’ll review how to prepare for a career in economics research, what an economics PhD program entails, and what types of opportunities it might bring. Economic education is a core component of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York’s mission to serve the community. To empower would-be economists, this post provides information for students who seek a career in economics research. We hope this information will be helpful to students interested in economics, regardless of their background and economic situation. This information is most applicable to students applying to programs in the United States.
The Breadth of Economics Research
Academic disciplines conduct research in different ways, so it’s important to have a basic understanding of the types of questions economists ask and how they approach answering them. There are many definitions of economics, but a broadly useful one is the study of how people, organizations, and governments make decisions under different constraints, and how those decisions may affect their outcomes.
When answering these questions, economists seek to ground their analyses in models and to be quantitatively precise about the effects they assign to any given cause. The range of topics economists can study is wide, but the accepted approaches to answering questions are stricter. Some examples of what economists might ask:
- How do different public housing programs affect the children who live there?
- Does a certain type of law encourage businesses to innovate?
- How will a change in the interest rate affect inflation and unemployment rates?
- How much does affordable health insurance improve people’s health?
- How can poor countries eradicate poverty?
There are many different subfields within economics, including, but not limited to behavioral, econometrics, energy/environmental, development, financial, international, monetary, public, and urban economics. You can familiarize yourself with the latest work in economics by subscribing to working paper series, such as NBER’s New This Week or the New York Fed’s Staff Reports . To get an idea of the breadth of questions economists can answer, you could listen to Stephen Dubner’s “ Freakonomics Radio ” podcast. You may also want to explore the Journal of Economic Perspectives , the New York Fed’s Liberty Street Economics blog, VoxDev , or VoxEU .
What Is a PhD Program Like?
Economics PhD programs typically last five to seven years. Unlike masters programs, they are often fully funded with a stipend, though most require students to complete teaching assistant and/or research assistant (RA) work as part of their funding package. In the first two years, students take classes, many of which are mathematically demanding. The rest of the program can include additional classes but is primarily devoted to original research with the aim of producing publishable papers that will constitute the dissertation.
Faculty advisors are a central part of PhD programs, as students look to them for guidance during the research process. Economics PhD programs are offered within university economics departments, but there are similar programs in public policy and business schools. You can look at their websites to understand any differences in coursework and subsequent job placements.
What Can You Do with an Economics PhD?
Upon graduation, students can obtain jobs in a variety of industries. Many PhD students hope to become university professors. Governments and public policy-related institutions such as the Federal Reserve System, the U.S. federal government, the World Bank, and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) also hire economists to work on policy, lead programs, and conduct research. Finally, economics PhD graduates can also find employment at a variety of private sector companies, including banks, economic consulting firms, and big tech companies. The pay for these different positions can vary. According to the American Economics Association (AEA), the average starting salary for economics assistant professors in 2022-23 was approximately $140,000 at PhD granting institutions and $98,000 at BA granting institutions.
Programs often publish the placements of their PhD graduates, so you can look online to see specific employment outcomes. See, for example, the University of Maryland’s placements . Ultimately, economists are highly regarded as authorities on a variety of topics. Governments, nonprofits, philanthropic foundations, financial institutions, and non-financial businesses all look to economists to answer important questions about how to best achieve their goals. Thus, earning an economics Ph.D. can potentially help you to influence issues that are important to you.
Preparing for an Economics PhD Program
There are several components to an economics PhD program application: college transcripts, GRE scores, letters of recommendation, and personal statements. Please download the Appendix linked below to learn more about transcripts and letters of recommendation. The Appendix details ways in which you can select coursework, obtain research experience, and develop relationships to position yourself for success as a PhD applicant.
If you feel that you are too far along in your academic career to take enough of the classes described in the Appendix, this does not necessarily preclude you from pursuing an economics PhD. For example, it’s possible to take some of these classes through a master’s program, or through a pre-doctoral RA job. Some pre-doctoral RA jobs, such as the one here at the New York Fed , may enable you to take classes in preparation for graduate school. If you are concerned about your transcript, reach out to an economist at your university for advice; program standards for coursework and grades vary, and it’s a good idea to get more personalized advice.
Research Experience
If you’re interested in becoming an economics researcher and applying to PhD programs, it’s best to get research experience as soon as possible. Working as an RA is a great way to learn how to conduct research and get a better idea of whether it’s the right career path for you. Additionally, it can help you obtain a letter of recommendation for graduate school applications and improve your qualifications.
All types of academic research can be enriching, but it’s beneficial to gain experience working directly with an economist. To find a position, you can reach out to professors whose work you find interesting or find an RA program at your school. Typical RA tasks may involve data collection and cleaning, as well as running analyses and creating charts to represent results. This is where coding skills become crucial; having taken math, statistics, and econometrics courses will also enable you to take on more responsibilities.
You may also have the opportunity to conduct your own research, possibly under the supervision of a professor at your university. This research could be self-initiated or part of a course such as a thesis workshop. Self-directed research is a great opportunity to learn about all stages of the research process. It’s also an excellent opportunity to create a writing sample for graduate school applications. Ultimately, though, your motivation for conducting your own research project should be that you want to answer a question. One thing economists have in common is a love of answering questions using data and theory.
Research experience is also often obtained after completing an undergraduate or master’s degree. Taking on a full-time RA position before applying to PhD programs is very common and can make you a more competitive applicant. You may either get an RA job working for a professor or participate in a pre-doctoral RA program.
Research assistant programs are more structured than positions with individual professors or projects, which could be helpful. Universities, parts of the government, think tanks, research organizations, and the Federal Reserve System are all good places to look for research assistant programs. To help you decide which opportunities are most desirable, you may want to ask potential employers : Where do people in this program tend to go afterward? Will I be working directly with an economist? How much of my time will be spent on academic research work? Will I be able to take classes as part of this program? Considering whether an economist will be able to evaluate your performance is an important factor for recommendation letters. The ability to take classes, either through tuition reimbursement or waivers, can also be an important benefit.
The Research Analyst program here at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York is one example of these programs and you should check it out here . The Federal Reserve Board of Governors also has a large program, and many other regional Federal Reserve Banks have similar programs. In addition, the PREDOC website and the NBER post listings of RA opportunities. J-PAL and IPA also tend to recruit RAs for economic development projects. Another source of RA opportunities is the @econ_ra account on X.
Who Should Get a PhD in Economics?
A PhD may not be for everyone, but it is for anyone—people of all genders, religions, ethnicities, races, and national origins have PhDs in economics. Many economists majored in economics, but others majored in math, physics, or chemistry. Because economics is such an integral part of policymaking, it is important that economists come from a wide range of backgrounds so policy can be stronger and more effective. The inclusion of differing perspectives helps ensure that the contribution of economists to work in public policy, academia, and beyond effectively serves the broadest range of society.

This is why Budget 2024 proposed significant new investments to increase the value and number of scholarships and fellowships for master’s and doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers funded by Canada’s federal granting agencies—the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC).
Today, the Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, and the Honourable Mark Holland, Minister of Health, announced that students and fellows receiving scholarships and fellowships from the funding agencies will see increased award values take effect as of September 1, 2024. The annual value of all current and new master’s and doctoral student scholarships will increase to $27,000 and $40,000, respectively, and current and new postdoctoral fellowships will increase to $70,000.
This enhancement reflects the Government of Canada’s steadfast dedication to supporting the next generation of researchers, giving them equal opportunity to succeed and providing them with the resources they need to tackle complex challenges and drive innovation.
Additional details will be communicated to award holders in July 2024. There will be no changes to the value or duration of the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships or the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships. The Vanier and Banting programs will continue under their current parameters, $50,000 and $70,000 per year respectively, until they are replaced by the new, streamlined talent program proposed in Budget 2024.
“Since day one, our government has been committed to reinforcing the role of researchers and scientists. We are making significant investments that directly address the sector’s crucial needs and provide the next generation of academics with the tools they need to generate new breakthroughs and discoveries that will improve people’s lives, boost innovation ecosystems and shape Canada’s prosperity for years to come.” – The Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry
“By increasing the value of scholarships and fellowships provided by the government’s research granting councils, the Government of Canada is reaffirming its support for Canadian research talent. This will ensure the next generation of scientific leaders remain here in Canada, where their work has the potential to lead to a better quality of life and improved health for us all.” – The Honourable Mark Holland, Minister of Health
Quick facts
Since 2016, the government has provided more than $16 billion to support science and research.
In addition, Budget 2024 proposed $825 million over five years, and $199.8 million ongoing, to increase support for master’s and doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows, as well as $1.8 billion over five years, and $748.3 million ongoing, to the federal granting councils to increase core research grant funding and support Canadian researchers.
In addition to the increase in award values, Budget 2024 proposed to increase the number of scholarships and fellowships provided, building to approximately 1,720 more graduate students and fellows benefitting each year, and to streamline the various tri-agency scholarship and fellowship programs into one talent program.
Award holders on paid parental leave will have the value of their leave supplements increased in proportion to the new value of their award in the same manner as all other active awards.
Budget 2024 also included investments in modern, high-quality research facilities and infrastructure to help solve real-world problems, create economic opportunities, and attract and train the next generation of scientific talent.

Department of Economics
New joint degree in economics and management to offer exciting career pathways.

The Department of Economics is joining forces with one of the top business schools in the UK to launch a new undergraduate course.
The BSc Economics and Management degree combines two interrelated disciplines of economics and management, two highly ranked subjects by the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2024, with the Department of Economics ranked number one in the UK and the Warwick Business School’s BSc Management ranked second by the same publication.
In today’s fast-changing economic landscape, business leaders, consultants, analysts and civil servants need to have a fundamental understanding of both disciplines: economic theory to be able to critically analyse economic data and managerial knowledge to adapt their business strategy accordingly.
This course will teach students the cutting-edge tools and latest research to do just that, helping them excel in their careers with transferable skills for any business.
Graduates from the Department of Economics and WBS have gone on to work for global names like Goldman Sachs, Unilever, Amazon, Google, PwC and UK Government departments such as the Department for Business and Trade.
Professor Elizabeth Jones, Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Department of Economics, said:
“We have been developing this programme for a number of years and are excited about its launch and subsequent growth over the coming years.” “The Department of Economics is renowned not only for its research, but also for its teaching, having been awarded the gold standard for teaching in the latest Teaching Excellence Framework. This combination will provide students with access to some of the world’s leading researchers in a range of areas, which will help them develop the knowledge, skills and practical expertise to succeed in their careers.” “We are excited by the opportunity to diversify our portfolio of undergraduate programmes and provide students with more choice when it comes to studying at a top University. Graduates from Warwick Economics are highly sought after and the added advantage for students to benefit from Warwick Business School’s expertise in providing placements will undoubtedly provide fantastic opportunities for students to meet their full potential.”
Professor Mark Johnson, Associate Dean of Undergraduate Programmes at Warwick Business School, said:
“It is great to see this course come to fruition after so much work behind the scenes. “Our ongoing dialogue with employers has revealed a real need from businesses and organisations for graduates who can combine management skills with an understanding of economics and some of the tools needed to navigate the economic landscape. “This course brings together world-class academics from one of the best business schools in the world and the leading researchers from an Economics department ranked second in the UK by the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF). “At Warwick Business School we are for the Change Makers, those restless to change the world for the better. This course will enable students to gain the skills and knowledge to have a positive impact with any career they choose to build.”
The three-year course can also be extended to four with a placement year at a top company either in the UK or abroad. This gives students the chance to put what they have learned into action in the real world, and it has led to many on other courses securing jobs once they have graduated at leading firms like IBM, Porsche, Samsung and Deloitte.
Warwick Business School’s teaching was given the top gold standard by the UK Government's latest Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF), with the University of Warwick one of just four Russell Group universities rated gold in all three categories - student experience, student outcomes, and for the overall assessment.
