My personal experience with a virtual world

Fatu

It was an early morning in 2012. I was in the 8th grade then. My classmates told me stories about how they met new friends and how they even chatted with celebrities and got to experience many amazing things. I was intrigued. I wanted to experience these exciting things they always talked about. Every child wants to partake in the childhood fantasy. So I went on to create a Facebook account;  this was the beginning of my journey through the virtual world. As time went by, I became accustomed to checking my social media more frequently. I immersed myself in the social media culture by chatting with friends via Messenger and Whatsapp. I started to share more content with my friends via my newsfeed to let them know that I was also virtually informed. Within no time, I was already a member of eight different social networking sites. This new online world now played an integral role in my life. For example, social media sites were now my teachers; they taught me news from around the world. It was also like attending school every day because I could look up information online. A virtual library, it was. Instead of blogging in my diary, I took to social media and posted about my life and daily routines. Social media was now a source of happiness and more so, it brought along a sense of motivation, pain, and frustration.

My newfound interest started to interfere with my education. Instead of checking my school notes, I would rather check social media to see what was happening with the lives of people around me; the food, clothes, events, or activities they were involved in. But something I would later discover was that by becoming more aware of other people’s lives and the content they were posting, I started to become less in tune with myself. I was more focused on the illusions that social media depicted than the actual realities of what life is. Thus, I started to sense insecurities which came with depression, jealousy and hatred as a result of comparing my life with others. In fact, I became a lesser version of myself and much like what the people in the social media world expected of me.

Luckily, my phone went missing and my mother insisted that I was not going to get another smartphone due to my excessive use of social media. My mom’s refusal to allow me to get back into the virtual world was one of my saddest moments. I felt lonely because I wanted to be more aware of things happening around the world. However, this denial led to something much more important and meaningful to my life. Within a period of a month, I became less concerned about other people's lives and more concerned about myself. I found myself reconnecting with my academics. I was now becoming more of myself with a focus on my realities. I had more time now to do my homework, study, and sleep rather than staying up late at night browsing through the net.

Lack of social media also made me realize the consequence of the excessive use of social media. This new realization sparked an interest in knowing if other students had similar experiences with the excessive use of social media. I then started to research to figure out how social media affected people’s lives, mainly, students’ performance and behavior. Moreover, I wanted to know if being clouded by the fake realities of social media have real consequences on people’s mental health, study habits or even marriages. I would later discover that marriages have been ruined because of a post or comment spouses made on social media.

After researching, I started to realize that social media had not just been interfering with my study habits, but was also interfering with my educational,  professional, and private life. For example, I had no privacy. Anyone who had access to my social media profiles could easily find out where I lived. They could access important information like my email and date of birth. Moreover, I sometimes spent 15 hours just browsing through social media without doing anything productive. However, after carefully scrutinizing my use of social media, I made the decision not to entirely quit social media, but to change the ways I use them. I decided to only use social media during my spare time. This way, there would be no excessive use and I would not be distracted from my studies. Thus, I prioritize my education over social media.

However, this is not to say that social media cannot serve good purposes. It can, however, I decided to look for the positive aspects of social media and let go of the negative ones. Therefore, I unfollowed sites that did not contribute to positive or educative aspects of my life.  Since I only use my social media accounts to spread positive messages that seek to promote peaceful coexistence. I started to use my social media as a tool for connecting with friends, families, loved ones, from all around the globe. Social media has changed how I view the world and also helped me develop better social networking skills.

Lastly, students ought to realize that nothing is more important than exceeding in all aspects of our academics. Moreover, addiction to social media can distract us from our studies because we may divert all our time to excessive use of social media. Therefore, students are better off using social media to mainly enhance their professional lives and build their networks. Social media can also be used for news too but with a high increase in fake news, students need to be cognizant of what kind of news to consume in order to not be strayed away from productive news that can help better their studies. Social media is not inherently bad, but it becomes terrible when we are unable to restore self-discipline from being addicted to social media.

Why Write a Social Media Essay

In a world buzzing with hashtags, filters, and the constant hum of notifications, the idea of sitting down to craft an essay about social media might seem as out of place as a cassette tape in a streaming era. Yet, there's something oddly therapeutic, almost rebellious, about pausing in the midst of 280-character wisdom to delve deeper into the why behind our digital existence.

So, what is social media essay, and what's the purpose of writing it? Well, it's more than just an exercise in intellectual curiosity. It's a personal journey, a reflective pause in the ceaseless scroll. While writing the essay, we gain the power to articulate the intangible, to breathe life into the pixels that dance across our screens. It's an opportunity to make sense of the chaos, to find meaning in the memes, and perhaps, in the process, to uncover a bit more about ourselves in this digital wilderness.

Let's face it - our online lives are a fast-paced carousel of memes, viral challenges, and carefully curated selfies. So, why bother wrestling with words and paragraphs in a world where brevity is king? The answer lies in the art of unraveling the digital tapestry that envelops us.

There's a magic in articulating the dance between the profound and the mundane that occurs within the confines of our screens. An essay becomes a lens, focusing our attention on the subtleties of social media dynamics – the inside jokes that become global phenomena, the ripple effect of a well-timed retweet, and the silent conversations unfolding in the comment sections.

6 Key Tips for Crafting a Social Media Essay

  • Embrace Your Authentic Voice: Just like your favorite Instagram filter can't hide the real you, your essay should reflect your genuine thoughts and feelings. Don't be afraid to let your unique voice shine through – whether it's witty, contemplative, or a delightful blend of both.
  • Dive into the Details: Social media isn't just about the grand gestures; it's the small, often unnoticed details that weave the most compelling narratives. Explore the minutiae of your online experiences – the peculiar hashtags, the quirky bios, and the unexpected connections that leave a lasting imprint.
  • Craft Your Hashtag Haiku: Much like poetry, brevity can be your ally in social media essays. Think of hashtags as haikus – succinct, impactful, and capable of conveying a universe of meaning in just a few characters. Choose them wisely.
  • Engage with the Comments Section: The comments section is the lively pub where digital conversations unfold. Dive in, clink glasses, and engage with the diverse perspectives swirling around. It's in these interactions that the real magic happens – where ideas collide, evolve, and sometimes, transform.
  • Navigate the Memescape: Memes are the folklore of the digital age, carrying tales of humor, irony, and cultural resonance. Don't shy away from exploring the memescape in your essay. Unravel the layers, decipher the symbolism, and appreciate the humor that often holds up a mirror to society.
  • Be Mindful of the Clickbait Pitfalls: While clickbait might be the flashy neon sign on the digital highway, it's essential to tread carefully. Ensure your essay isn't just a sensational headline but a thoughtful exploration that goes beyond the surface.

Form an Outline

Now that we've acknowledged the importance of structure in your essay, the next step is to build a solid roadmap. Think of it like planning a road trip; you wouldn't hit the highway without a map or GPS, right? Similarly, creating an outline for your essay gives you a clear direction and ensures your thoughts flow smoothly.

So, whether you decide to order an essay online or tackle it yourself, here's a simple way to go about it:

Introduction (Where You Start):

  • Briefly introduce the topic.
  • State your social media essay thesis or main idea.
  • Example: 'Let's begin by introducing the impact of social media on modern communication, focusing on its role in shaping opinions and fostering connections.'

Body Paragraphs (The Journey):

  • Each paragraph should cover a specific social media essay argument and point.
  • Use examples or evidence to support your ideas.
  • Example: 'The first aspect we'll explore is how social media amplifies voices. For instance, hashtags like #ClimateAction mobilize a global audience around environmental issues.'

Transitions (Smooth Turns):

  • Guide your readers from one point to the next.
  • Ensure a logical flow between paragraphs.
  • Example: 'Having discussed the amplification of voices, let's now shift our focus to the influence of social media in spreading information.'

Counter Arguments (Addressing Detours):

  • Acknowledge different perspectives.
  • Counter Arguments with evidence or reasoning.
  • Example: 'While social media can be a powerful tool for connectivity, critics argue that it also contributes to the spread of misinformation. Let's explore this counterargument and analyze its validity.'

Conclusion (The Destination):

  • Summarize your main points.
  • Restate your thesis and leave a lasting impression.
  • Example: 'In conclusion, social media serves as both a bridge and a battleground of ideas. Understanding its nuances is crucial in navigating this digital landscape.'

Creating an outline for your essay not only streamlines the writing process but also ensures your readers embark on a clear and organized journey through your insights on social media. If you're exploring more options, you might even want to buy thesis for more convenience.

Make a Social Media Essay Introduction

Begin your introduction by presenting a concise overview of the key theme or topic you're addressing. Clearly state the main purpose or argument of your essay, giving readers a roadmap for what to expect. Integrate social media essay hooks like a relevant statistic, quote, or provocative question to capture attention.

For instance, if your essay is about the impact of social media on personal relationships, you might start by mentioning a statistic on the percentage of couples who met online.

Social Media Essay Body Paragraph

Structure each social media essay body paragraph around a specific aspect of your chosen topic. Start with a clear topic sentence that encapsulates the main idea of the paragraph. Provide concrete examples, data, or case studies to support your points and strengthen your argument. Maintain a logical flow between paragraphs by using effective transitions.

If your essay focuses on the positive effects of social media on business marketing, dedicate a paragraph to showcasing successful campaigns and how they leveraged different platforms.

Social Media Essay Conclusion

In your conclusion, succinctly recap the main points discussed in the body paragraphs. Reinforce your thesis statement and emphasize its broader implications. Rather than introducing new information, use the conclusion to leave a lasting impression on your readers. Consider prompting further thought or suggesting practical applications of your findings.

For instance, if your essay examined the impact of social media on political discourse, conclude by encouraging readers to critically evaluate the information they encounter online and actively engage in constructive conversations.

Proofread and Revise

In the process of writing social media essay, proofreading and revising are indispensable steps that can significantly enhance the overall quality of your work. Begin by meticulously checking for grammatical errors, ensuring that your sentences are clear and concise. Pay attention to the flow of your ideas, confirming that each paragraph seamlessly transitions into the next.

During the proofreading phase, keep an eye out for any inconsistencies in tone or style. This is an opportunity to refine your language and ensure that it aligns with the intended voice of your essay. Look for repetitive phrases or unnecessary words that might detract from the clarity of your message.

As you revise, consider the effectiveness of your hook. Does it still resonate as strongly as you intended? Can it be tweaked to better captivate your audience? A compelling hook sets the tone for your entire essay, so invest time in perfecting this crucial element.

Furthermore, don't hesitate to seek feedback from peers or mentors. Another perspective can provide valuable insights into areas that may need improvement. Fresh eyes often catch nuances that the writer might overlook. Alternatively, you might also explore the option to buy coursework for additional support.

The challenge for the company will be battling rivals with new apps and networking tools, fighting to protect user’s privacy and security of personal information, and balancing advertisements to be a win/win for the company financially without being a detriment to the user’s experience. Financial Analysis (internal) Facebook’s revenue has continued to climb since its inception but has seen significant increases since the IPO in 2012 and the mobile app launch in 2013. Along with the mobile app launch came online advertising which has been a huge revenue earner for Facebook.

The IPO was a jumping off point for Facebook and despite a rocky start, the price per share has more than quadrupled in value. As users continue to pour onto the social networking site, more advertisers and businesses pay Facebook for space to market their products and services expecting to be viewed by a large number of its almost 2 billion Facebook users. Facebook is positioned well among the social networking and messaging service competition. The company has significantly lower debt through the help of the IPO, and a significantly higher user base due to the ease of use, experience and capabilities the site allows to that of the competition.

There are however large opportunities that Facebook needs to be aware of, such as the sheer size and revenue of one of the larger competitors, Google. Google+ was launched in 2010 and redesigned in 2015, the parent company has significant revenues to put behind building a strong competitor to face off against Facebook. Facebook also needs to stay on top of technology advancements, new applications, and social media trends to continue enticing new users. SWOT Analysis (internal) Facebook has many strengths that support the company’s position in the market among the competition.

Facebook is a name that is known around the globe, with rapidly growing popularity, more and more people are being driven to create accounts on the leading social networking site. The company’s high revenues enable them to make investments and acquisitions that open doors to additional resources further advancing the Facebook platform. Among the company’s weakness is the realization that there is no user verification being done to assure users are over the age requirement and are who they say they are.

While advertising is a primary source of revenue for the company, the flooding of online ads can leave users irritated. Facebook could turn that weakness into an opportunity by offering users a pay option to unsubscribe from online ads, making their experience more pleasant. There are large regions of the world that have few Facebook users, with the right product enhancements or modifications, some or all those markets could be tapped into. Facebook’s largest threats are product imitation and the unpleasantries of the internet.

The threat of imitation is high among Facebook competitors, just as Facebook is competing with Google by creating GraphSearch, Google and others are trying to compete with the social networking aspect of Facebook. Active Facebook user or not, cybercrimes are prevalent in all online aspects, its a threat that Facebook needs to monitor and routinely to ensure the privacy and protection of its users. Porter’s Five Force Analysis (external) Bargaining Power of Suppliers The bargaining power of suppliers is low to moderate for Facebook.

The list of suppliers would include those that develop, support, back-up or house Facebook’s applications, software, networks, etc. (Wills, J. 2016 May). Facebook is large enough to take away some of the bargaining power from supplier, but at the same time those suppliers need to be able to support a platform as large as Facebook, which may take some of the suppliers out of the running, which would end up moving the bargaining power of suppliers needle from low towards moderate.

Bargaining Power of Buyers/Customers Facebook’s customers are the users of the platform and any company that uses the space for advertisements. Since there are other (free) social networking sites available, there is no switching costs making the bargaining power of the user customer base high. The advertising and marketing customer base has significantly lower bargaining power if they want to reach the billion-plus customer base that the Facebook platform offers.

Rivalry Among Existing Competitors Facebook has the largest base of active users among all social networking and messaging platforms, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t serious competition that the company needs to be cognizant of. Users go where they have the best overall experience and with new technology and apps rising to the surface, users have more options than ever. Another consideration is the fact that even though Facebook acquired WhatsApp, it is still a competitor, not in the way of revenue, but in the way of active users that aren’t on Facebook.

Threat of Substitution There are a considerable number of substitutions as indicated in Graph 1, that offer platforms and functionality similar to that of Facebook. Users can opt to use Twitter, LinkedIn, SnapChat, or Pinterest for a similar social aspect, however some of the platforms are geared towards a particular interest as LinkedIn is used more for professional socialization and recruiting, where SnapChat is social nature and similar to texting with better imagery. Users are also able to find any number of applications that could move them away from the Facebook platform to perform functions such as messaging or video conferencing.

Threat of New Entrants The threat of new entrants is moderate. The Facebook platform was initially created by college students, so anyone with an interest in and knowledge of computers could create a social networking platform. The factor that puts the threat slightly above moderate are the barriers that come into play when trying to compete with a company that has seen the quick growth and success that Facebook has, it’s difficulty to be considered a threat early on.

Another factor would be the creation of a new and innovative social networking site that pulls users away from Facebook, such as SnapChat, which is gaining popularity with 158 million daily users (Carson, B. 2017 February). This analysis reveals a heavy emphasis on the threat of substitutions and competition. Facebook has experienced rapid growth since inception in 2004, but that’s not to say another hot app or new technology wave won’t come along and entice users away from Facebook. The company needs to look at what its competition is doing and consider new platforms, branching out, and making new acquisitions in order to retain their competitive advantage and grow its user base.

Overall Analysis The analysis reveals that Facebook is leading the charge in the social networking space but is not without competition hot on its heels. The company has had to make several strategic moves to stay ahead of the competition and better align itself for sustainability and continued growth as well as continued success. The company is positioned well financially having a low debt balance and continued year over year revenue growth, 2017 saw a 32% growth in revenue over the prior year due primarily attributed to user growth and increased online advertisements.

With 2 billion active users, the company’s growth may plateau at some point in the near future with or without continued feature enhancements and continued innovation. The company will need to continue to grow revenue to tackle the threat of new entrants into the market as well as build a cyber fortress to protect users from cyber threats. The recent admission of Facebook’s cyber breach was likely what caused the share price to drop, this may also scare users into opting off the platform if they don’t feel their information is secure to the extend the company has promised.

Key Strategic Issues The key strategic issues that Facebook is facing are competition, advertising, and cyber security. Facebook is facing off against multiple strong competitors in the social networking space and they need to be aware of how those platforms are drawing customers into their space and away from Facebook. Advertising is Facebook’s largest revenue generator, but can the company continue to sustain its ad and revenue growth without affecting customer satisfaction and experience. And lastly, the ever-growing world of cyber hacking is a serious threat.

Recently it was made public that Facebook was breached during the presidential election and user’s personal data was accessed (Hayes, D. 2018 April). Facebook needs to have eyes and ears on the ground to leverage internal strengths and mitigate external threats. Recommendations Facebook has a strong presence in the social media platform, leading the market with the highest number of users, but can that be sustained when the competition is launching new and redesigned apps and social networking sites that pull people away from Facebook.

Facebook should tap into its audience and get real-time feedback on likes and dislikes to ensure current users remain users and tell others to use Facebook’s platform rather than another. The company could also try creating branches under the Facebook umbrella. Create different silos within the company platform that would users with a single login to select their preferred platform, whether that’s specialized socialization like cooking or travel or recruitment, or short message chats with friends and family. Users stay with Facebook but get the experience that best suits them.

It’s not hard to calculate the amount of advertising that is taking place on Facebook as it makes up 92% of the company’s revenue. What is hard to calculate is how that number can be sustained without disrupting the user’s satisfaction levels. Facebook might consider offering a minimal fee to users ($1/month) to opt out of all advertisements, with 2 billion monthly active users, that could generate significant revenue.

Another consideration is to limit advertisements to the user’s preferences, either by way of information provided in the profile, by way of an online survey about what the user would like to see ads regarding. Clicking the like button doesn’t mean the user wants to be bombarded with advertisements about that and other such things. Facebook needs to take a stand to protect its user’s privacy and personal information from cyber hackers and threats. Zuckerberg has been quoted as admittedly knowing that most of its Facebook user’s info has been accessed without the user’s authorization (Hayes, D. 2018 April).

The company needs to employee security specialist who will uphold the moral and ethical responsibility of ensuring that users are protected from both internal security threats as well as external cyber hacks. While company’s may be paying for access to users information, Facebook needs to either honor their privacy commitment to users or send a new agreement stating they are and will sell any information that users post on the social media platform.

It’s not unexpected, but it might allow users to limit what information they choose to share, knowing the data will get sold. Conclusion In conclusion, Facebook is a leader among social networking and messaging service platforms. The name and blue and white logo are recognized globally, regardless of user status, as a place to share pictures, videos, follow groups, stay current with the news, as well as staying connect with family and friends. The analysis looked at internal and external factors that impact the company’s performance and brought to light three key strategic issues for Facebook to focus on.

Recommendations have been made to help the company address these strategic issues to ensure it is well positioned to tackle competition in the market, balancing advertising to be a win for the company without hindering user experience, and protecting users from internal and external security threats and cyber breaches. Paying close attention to these areas will help ensure Facebook remains the number one provider for social networking platforms and continues to thrive in the technology industry.

Facebook Company Analytical Essay

Introduction, pestel analysis, tows analysis, conclusions.

Facebook Corporation was established by the current chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg in 2004. In its inception days, the Facebook Corporation membership was limited to Harvard students though it was later expanded to other institutions in the city of Boston (Veer, 2011, p.271). The company operates as a social networking site connecting users with friends who work, live and study around them.

People use Facebook to keep up with others, upload photos, share videos and links as well as understand the situation about people they meet. Of all social networking sites Facebook has the widest regional coverage with over 700 million active users (Facebook Inc, 2011, p.36).

Since the establishment of Facebook Inc, the company has been facing legal proceeding in regard to the use of the social networking idea. The company has been accused of interfering with the privacy of the users.

This resulted in declining traffic in key markets until the company introduced powerful controls for sharing personal information. Although they claim to reinforce the law on users, case of hacking confidential information still affect the company’s business (Facebook, 2009, pp.1-11).

Another political factor could be the copyright policies. Considering the scattered nature of Facebook users, most of them are not aware of these policies and end up violating them. The social network site is also affected by bans in certain countries. For instance, the company had been banned operating in China since 2009 (Facebook, 2011, p.36).

Children welfare associations affect the company as a result of exposing detrimental materials to children. Indeed, the office of the New York Attorney General stepped up warnings against the company saying that Facebook might face a consumer fraud indict for misrepresenting how the site is safe for children.

The growing of Asian and Latin America economies is an economic factor that has the highest leverage on the business. In fact, the company fiscal 2011 plan is to expand to the Asian countries such as China.

The company plans to launch in China and abide by the laws of the corporation by partnering with the Chinese search engine Baidu. These growing economies increase the income of the people and are able to access computers more. The rising literacy level especially in the developing nations is a factor influencing the business.

The number of people who can use computers effectively is growing dramatically. For example, statistics indicate that 60% of the Indians are computer literate and 90% of them have daily access to the computer. This is the very reason why India has the highest number of people socializing through Facebook and other social sites. The other economic factor is employment which is associated with internet accessibility.

People working tend to have ample access to computers and are able to socialize more through the social sites. Facebook is ranked at the top when considering the preference of the working community to social networking sites.

Like other internet sites, age demographic is the major influencing factor of Facebook business (Taylor et al., 2003, p.237). Youths tend to be the major users of the site when connecting with their peers.

The minors are increasingly using Facebook to socialize posing risks to the business. In reality, the company has not devised effective measure to filter underage uses out of the site. Religion is also a factor that is affecting the company’s business especially in the Arab countries.

Facebook has been unable to penetrate many of the Arab countries such as Saudi Arabia and Pakistan due to religion restrictions. In addition to these, gender and marital status could leverage the networking business.

Males have been the dominant users of the social networking sites though females have picked the same pace. Unmarried individuals tend to use Facebook more than married individuals perhaps due to time limitations or benefits sort.

Technological factors affecting Facebook business include mobile growth. Nearly 35% of the total Facebookers access the social site from a mobile device. This trend has even moved the mobile market for products like Apple’s iPad and iPhone.

New software technologies have enabled the company to add new features on their site which are attracting more consumers (Kwon, 2010, p.257). In terms of these features, the chat option is the biggest attraction to the site followed by the sharing option.

Advancement in space technology is also expanding the market for the business. Many remote areas have accessibility to information technology through the use of space equipment. Furthermore, connectivity speed has improved very much and people can socialize fast and effectively.

Some new technologies such as third-party medial plug-ins have expanded the use of Facebook credits thus enhancing e-commerce. Besides, technology allows for business transactions to be conducted through Facebook site and therefore attract a new segment of consumers. Undeniably, technological advancement is the key enabler of Facebook business.

SWOT Matrix

TOWS Alternative Matrix

Weaknesses and threats (WT)

A company with great weaknesses has to route to a survival strategy (Stokes & Wilson, 2010, p.225). Facebook should consider the option of joint operation with Baidu and other search engines in difficult markets. Another alternative would be to withdraw from the challenging markets altogether.

But, the challenges of the company must not have to route to a survival strategy due to the company’s strengths. Consequently, better strategy would be to attempt to develop weaknesses into strengths.

Weaknesses and opportunities (WO)

The rising internet usage has resulted in using more the social network sites. Yet Facebook essentially follows a one-model policy which presents a problem if other designs of site features become obsolete. The company has to introduce new features to reach a wider spectrum of users. This will allow using the same site for a range of needs ranging from business to dating.

Strengths and threats (ST)

One of the biggest threats to Facebook is the customer privacy issues. There has been continued criticism that the company does not offer the standard confidentiality demanded in a social networking environment.

The company should reduce such issues using the many applications available that can ensure maximum confidentiality. Another strategy for avoiding competitive pressure is to differentiate the site through easy user interface.

Strengths and opportunities (SO)

Generally, Facebook can build on their strengths by taking the advantage of the opportunities. The company’s strength in global coverage and popularity becomes evident. This strength can enable the company to develop a consumer relationship that attracts regulatory restricted environments.

Eventually, the strength will enable the company to open operation in China and Arab countries. Thus Facebook can benefit from considerable concessions offered by the governments to attract the company.

Facebook Company is certainly operating in a tricky environment due to the changing nature of communication and networking environment. The environment is tricky because there in increasing preference for social networks yet the technology responsible cannot meet the intrinsic demand of the consumers. Policies regulating social medial works have requirements beyond the ability of technology.

This attracts other groups of interests while regulations in some countries cannot be fully satisfied. However, the growing economy and advancement in technology promise a brighter future for the company.

If Facebook can exploit the opportunity of rising usage of the internet through its global coverage, there is a chance of attracting policy makers in other countries and maybe adjust regulations. There is a chance to develop the weaknesses into new strengths once the company is better positioned in the market.

Since the market of social media environment is quite demanding, Facebook must focus on its core resources and competencies. In this case, integration of features and ease of use are distinctive resources that can enable effective differentiation in the competition.

When combined with the threshold resource of regional coverage, the competencies can leverage the brand name in the face of consumers as well as policy makers. It is therefore recommended that the company should:

  • Use the status updates to provide targeted adverts
  • Focus on monetization to improve valuations
  • Provide local advertising based on customer location
  • Enable controlled application
  • Improve in storage and archival
  • Engage in mergers with search engines
  • Solve the problem of privacy

Your chance of acceptance, your chancing factors, extracurriculars, using personal experiences in college essays.

Hey everyone, just wondering how much I should focus on personal stories or experiences in my college essays. Got any examples of personal essays that really stood out and got someone accepted to a top school?

When it comes to writing college essays, incorporating personal stories and experiences can be incredibly effective in highlighting your unique qualities and demonstrating your personality and perspective.

Admissions officers want to get to know the person behind the application, so it's essential that you showcase elements of your life that shaped who you are today. Here are a few tips on how to effectively use personal experiences in your college essays:

1. Focus on a meaningful event: Choose an experience or situation that left a significant impact on you. This could be a specific challenge you faced, a time when you grew personally, or an instance when you demonstrated tremendous resilience.

2. Reflect on your growth: It's crucial to showcase not only the experience itself but also how you've grown, changed, or learned from it. Reflect on the lessons you took away from the event and how they've influenced your life or mindset.

3. Be authentic: Don't feel pressured to write about something extravagant or dramatic. Sometimes, the most meaningful experiences come from everyday moments, so it's essential to stay true to your personal narrative.

4. Show, don't tell: When describing your personal experience, paint a vivid picture for the reader by using descriptive language and including specific details. This will make your story more engaging and help the reader feel more connected to your narrative.

One well-known example of an effective personal essay comes from a student who was admitted to Stanford University. The essay featured an engaging story about the student's love for Costco stores. Rather than just stating their fascination with Costco, the applicant wove an entertaining narrative detailing their visits to the store and connected the experience to their curiosity and desire to learn.

The essay was successful because it showcased the student's unique perspective, genuine enthusiasm, and relatability through an otherwise mundane experience. By focusing on a personal anecdote and connecting it to their own intellectual curiosity, the applicant was able to convey their authentic personality and stand out from the competition.

To sum up, using personal experiences in your college essays can be an effective way to demonstrate your personality, growth, and unique perspective. Make sure to focus on a meaningful event, reflect on your growth, be authentic, and show rather than tell to craft a memorable and engaging essay.

On the one hand, your paper has to describe an event accurately. As has been said before, you need to explain what happened and how it happened. On the other hand, you also need to analyze the impact the event’s experience had on you. So, make sure that your paper includes both: narrative and self-reflection.
  • Compose a memorable conclusion. The conclusion of your essay has to explain how experience can be applied. In other words, you need to show what you learned from the event. How To Write the Meaningful Activity Essay for Princeton

This article was written based on the information and opinions presented by Elias Miller in a CollegeVine livestream. You can watch the full livestream for more info.

What’s Covered:

Structuring the essay, showing personal growth, what to avoid.

Are you interested in Princeton University ? The college requires a few supplemental essays, and while the prompts may seem simple, you could find yourself stumped when it comes time to write. You also have very limited space you can use to express yourself. This article will help you figure out how to plan an essay about a meaningful experience and offer some tips about the writing process.

This prompt asks you to elaborate on an activity, organization, work experience, or hobby that has been particularly meaningful to you. With a word limit of 150, you may not have enough space to say all that you want to, so you should try to find a targeted story or angle.

When you’re planning this essay , you should keep the shortness of the piece in mind. Only 150 words probably isn’t enough to describe an experience or pastime to the fullest extent. You need to formulate a precise approach that lets you convey as much emotion as possible, along with your personal voice and a few specific details that let the piece come to life.

Although you don’t have many words available to you, you still need to write multiple paragraphs. One long paragraph makes your essay look shorter and cramped, and the reader won’t want to engage with it as much as they would multiple paragraphs. Three or even two paragraphs let the reader see a fleshed-out narrative much more clearly. Admissions officers often don’t view single paragraphs as very appealing, so don’t write only one.

If you’re struggling to come up with an idea, keep the word “meaningful” in mind. Figuring out what’s meaningful to you will let you respond to this prompt thoughtfully and in a way that will resonate with your admissions officers.

Once you have an idea in mind, you should get right into it. You can include enough details about the setting to provide your reader with context, so don’t waste the word count. You have to pack in as much action as possible into a short space, so avoid unnecessary background information or explanations. You should be trying to tell a story. Jump right into where the story begins.

While you don’t want to make the entire essay about how you’ve grown and changed, writing about how this experience has shaped you makes for a more compelling narrative.

You want to make the person reading your essay root for you. You should consider starting with a moment of failure or doubt. Because pretty much everyone has messed up at some point or another, this kind of scene provides a good, relatable emotional hook for the reader. Think about sports movies: the protagonist often begins by falling on their face or struggling in some way, only to overcome the odds in the end. Working past these devastating moments makes for a more compelling narrative than writing about something that’s always come easily to you.

This can also help to highlight why the activity is meaningful to you—you’ve had to work past difficulties. It gives an admissions committee better insight into your experiences and how you’ve grown.

You don’t even need to pick an activity where you’ve accomplished a lot. While you would ideally have success in something meaningful to you, and that you’re very passionate about, you sometimes have the most profound experiences in something that you’re not naturally good at. It’s totally fine if you’re not super impressive in the activity you selected. What matters is capturing exactly why it has meant a lot to you.

Don’t Restate Your Resume

While it might be tempting to use this essay as an opportunity to share your many accomplishments, you should avoid writing a list of experiences or extracurricular activities. This doesn’t single out anything particularly meaningful. It also can read like a resume. Admissions officers already see your Common App resume , so you don’t want to write about a lot of different activities.

If you’ve won some awards and want to write about how that came to be, you should work to avoid sounding braggy. Maybe you led a benefit dance or held a major position in the National Honor Society. Maybe you made varsity and led your team to a championship victory. All of that is excellent, and it’s fine to write about it. But you don’t want to focus on how impressive other people might find it. Ask yourself: What did you gain from that experience? How did you work to make it happen?

Focus on the Journey

You have to show why all the work you did paid off, and you have to put emotion behind your writing. Try to focus on your feelings, and how you grew from it all. Rather than writing about the moment of success, emphasize the long nights and the early mornings. Draw on specific scenes and emotions to ground your essay in something real.

College essays, including this one, show an admissions committee who you are—what you stand for, how you’ve grown, and how you express yourself. This essay should help to remind you of what work you find meaningful. Just go from there, and the rest will follow.

My Experience with the Social Media - Personal Essay Sample

The advent of technology has brought with it numerous changes in the society. One of the most affected areas is communication. Technology has replaced the traditional ways of relaying messages over long distances. Emails, tweets, and the Facebook Posts have gained ground at the expense of letters, telegrams, and the faxes. These social changes have transformed the contemporary societies in several ways. For instance, meeting friends is very simple, since one has to send a friend request to a total stranger and the two become friends in a matter of minutes. Businesses, politics, organizations, civil societies and many other associations have been enhanced by the social media. In other words, the social media is a powerful tool for communication and social advancement. On the flipside, online communities are a dangerous place. Cyber-bullying, fraudulent dealings, blackmail, and the spread of propaganda have been accentuated by the online media. Just like anybody else who is enthusiastic about the Internet, I have had both awful and awesome experiences with the social media. However, I do not wish to discourage people to use it, but I will recommended, based on my past experiences, the ideal way of using the internet in the most productive manner possible.

My first encounter with social media came when I opened a Facebook account. I was 16 years then when I got my first smartphone. It wasnt new, but it served all the purposes that I imagined a smart phone would do. Most of my friends were already on Facebook but I shied off from opening an account due to the numerous bad reports I had heard about cyber bullying. On this particular day, I decided that I was ready to come face to face with the online world, something that my friends praised often. With the help of one of my friends, I logged into the Facebook website and followed all the prompts necessary to open an account. In a matter of minutes, I was one among billions of Facebook users. One of the first things that Facebook required me to do was to add a profile picture. I did not have a picture that would fit an online display at the moment, so I took one instantly and uploaded it as my profile picture. I also downloaded a picture of my favorite sport car from the Internet and used it as my cover photo. I had been told that it was not safe to put my name as the username, so I quickly designed a pet name and added it instead.

After one week, I had received a hundred friend requests from my classmates and family members. I needed no classes on accepting the friends, so I confirmed all of them immediately. I was delighted to see that I made 100 virtual friends in less than a month, something that could take me a life time to do. Additionally, the Facebook operators gave suggested to me a number of groups that they thought I was interested in. What struck me is how they knew that I was interested in their offers, because surprisingly, all the suggestions looked appealing to me. Within one more week, I was a member of more than five groups, one of them being my former schools blog. Since then, I came to learn of other social media platform that did more or less the same as what Facebook does. All the online platforms virtually connect thousands of people with a common interest: to share with the world. I thus joined many other social media and became a world citizen, connected to billions of Internet users remotely.

Since I established my online presence, I have experienced both the good and bad sides of the Internet. For example, I have made purchases of goods online at a price that is far much below that in the grocery store. I have also kept track of all my former classmates by looking at their online posts. I once joined an online course which I did not complete. The reason being my failure to finish this course was time insufficiency. Online courses, as I came to learn call for ones patience and persistence. For an online student to graduate in a course, they must complete all the tutorials and assignments. Since these learning materials are offered over the internet, and in bits, it implies that a learner must spend a lot of time attending to the course. Due to my commitment to other activities, I failed to give my online course all the time it needed. One important thing I have learned with the Internet is that it promotes globalization. According to Ritzer (18), new trends are emerging everywhere as people try out new things they have learned through the internet and other sources. I am this not surprised that fashion, customs, music, and culture have spread widely through the internet. From my experience, I have realized that everybody is embracing the social media for all manner of reasons, and users should apply this tool prudently to avoid or minimizes its potential damages.

I Love Facebook. That’s Why I’m Suing Meta.

An illustration of a person being forced by a blue blob to look at a feed on a cellphone.

By Ethan Zuckerman

Mr. Zuckerman is an associate professor of public policy at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where he is the director of the UMass Initiative for Digital Public Infrastructure.

While it’s become fashionable to dump on the aging social media platform Facebook, I quite enjoy using it. Many of my high school and college friends use it to celebrate birthdays and share news of their children and their travels. Eight years ago, I reconnected with a college housemate on the platform, and last year we got married. Thanks, Facebook.

But like many people, I wish I had more control over how Facebook delivers my friends’ updates to me. Facebook’s inscrutable feed algorithm, which is supposed to calculate which content is most likely to appeal to me and then send it my way, forgets friends I want to hear from, becomes obsessed with people to whom I’m only loosely connected and generally feels like an obstacle to how I’d like to connect with my friends.

When the British software developer Louis Barclay developed a software workaround to address this problem, I was intrigued. Mr. Barclay’s tool — a piece of software known as an extension, which can be installed in a Chrome web browser — was simple. Christened Unfollow Everything, it would automate the process of unfollowing each of my 1,800 friends, a task that manually would take hours. The result is that I would be able to experience Facebook as it once was, when it contained profiles of my friends, but without the endless updates, photos, videos and the like that Facebook’s algorithm generates. I could curate my feed by following only those friends and groups I really still want to see updates from.

As nice as this tool would be for me, I saw in it a bigger purpose: If tools like Unfollow Everything were allowed to flourish, and we could have better control over what we see on social media, these tools might create a more civic-minded internet.

There are many serious concerns about what social media is doing to us individually, and to society. Congress has passed or proposed sweeping measures, from forcing a sale of TikTok to asking platforms to ensure young users aren’t harmed by the content they experience online. These broad measures do violence to freedom of expression, and they may put even more control over what we read and view in the hands of these powerful companies. If a court finds that users have a right to choose what they experience on social media, a new path forward is possible: We can decide how social media works for us and for our children through tools we can control.

Unfortunately, Mr. Barclay was forced by Facebook to remove the software. Large social media platforms appear to be increasingly resistant to third-party tools that give users more command over their experiences. Many of them, in fact, have stopped supporting third-party tools directly.

In 2023, Reddit and Twitter effectively prevented developers from using the companies’ data portals by imposing a pricing change that makes such tools impractically expensive. Some companies go even further by threatening developers who release their tools independently. In 2021, the developer of Swipe for Facebook, an Android app intended to provide a streamlined Facebook experience, said that the platform sent him a cease and desist letter, leading him to remove the product from the Google Play store. Another app, Simple Social, was also removed from Google’s store. Platforms like Facebook no doubt are concerned that these third-party apps could block ads or sponsored content, and may also be worried about losing valuable users.

After talking with Mr. Barclay, I decided to develop a new version of Unfollow Everything. And rather than wait to see whether Meta, Facebook’s parent, would take legal action against me, I — and the lawyers at the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia — asked a federal court in California last week to rule on whether users should have a right to use tools like Unfollow Everything that give them increased power over how they use social networks, particularly over algorithms that have been engineered to keep users scrolling on their sites. (Meta declined to comment for this article.)

The Stanford University scholar Francis Fukuyama and his colleagues refer to such tools as “middleware.” They make the point that a competitive market for these tools could be a more fine-grained way to improve social media than big-footed regulatory approaches. They also wrote that Congress would probably need to take action to require platforms to be more receptive to this sort of software.

My lab at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, is dedicated to creating user-empowering middleware to forge a future where you could choose to read Facebook through a filter that de-emphasized divisive political arguments and emphasized personal updates, or to read X through a filter that checked news headlines to see if they came from reliable journalistic outlets. Our goal is to let users pick the algorithms that filter out the content they don’t want to see and select content that interests them, rather than giving this power to platforms like Facebook.

Such tools are protected under Section 230 of the 1996 Communications Decency Act, which safeguards platforms like Facebook from direct liability for the behavior of their users and has been critical in allowing Facebook and others to build billion dollar businesses. But the remainder of the section often goes ignored. We argue that it establishes the rights of users, families and schools to self-police the content they encounter online, using technical means to block material they find objectionable. This protection should encompass tools like Unfollow Everything by anticipating the needs of users to assert control when the interests of content providers are not aligned with the interests of users.

Should the court in California rule in our favor, my lab will release Unfollow Everything 2.0 at no charge, and users will have the chance to participate in a study to examine whether their use of Facebook changes with the tool and whether they feel in more command of their experience.

A healthy internet is a balance between the intentions of the powerful companies that run it and the individuals who use it. Giving users more control is important to establishing more of an equilibrium in an online world that is increasingly out of kilter.

Two diners eat with blindfolds on at the Black Forest in Camas, Washington

On a family trip to Las Vegas, Jim Rice ate one of his favorite meals in complete darkness. Blackout , a Vegas “dark dining” restaurant , serves its tasting menu in a lightless room, so diners cannot see the dishes in front of them. Over the course of the meal, they guess the components of each course by relying on their other senses, until employees reveal the menu at the end.

Rice wasn’t sold on the concept — until he started eating. “I was totally a convert, totally blown away,” he says. “The thing we talked about the most (about our trip), for months and months, was this dark dining experience.”

So when Rice opened Wyld Pines Public House in Camas, Washington, they decided they would bring dark dining to the greater Portland area. In 2023, Rice opened the Black Forest , a dark dining restaurant within Wyld Pines in which diners eat a seven-course dinner with their vision entirely obscured.

When visitors arrive, they put on blacked-out goggles before entering the private dining room home to the Black Forest. During dinner, servers guide diners with basic information for each dish — if they should use a spoon or a fork, for instance — and then customers can taste and try to guess what’s in each course. “There are typically people who are anxious as they start,” Rice says. “Soon, their confidence builds, they start realizing they can do this, and then the debates begin.”

At the end of the meal, chef Brandon Edgerton presents diners with their menus and answers any questions they may have. The chef designs a new menu every three months so visitors can return and have a new experience; the menus usually have some sort of overarching theme, using produce from Washington and Oregon farms.

To work with the format of the meal, Edgerton designs dishes to be eaten without sight — he serves items in bite-sized pieces, and uses things like teacups for soups to keep things from getting messy. He also designs each menu with accommodations for 90 separate specialized diets and allergies, considering diners are inherently more vulnerable when they can’t see what they’re eating. “When I first started this, it was a big learning curve to shift from standard dining to dining in the dark,” Edgerton says. “It’s a process; it takes all three months to develop a menu.”

Dark dining emerged in Europe in the late 1990s and early 2000s , exploring both the ways a lack of vision can impact other senses and also to give people who can see an idea of how visually impaired diners experience restaurants. Psychologist Axel Rudolph originally opened his Unsicht Bar in Cologne, Germany in an attempt to shift diners’ perception of disability and the ableism of modern society , staffing the restaurant entirely with blind and visually impaired servers.

Over time, the phenomenon shifted away from an emphasis on disability activism, more focused on the sensory experience of dining without sight. Rice has enjoyed the way dining in the dark forces its participants to be present. “Guests can’t use their cell phones throughout the experience — they can’t text, they can’t Google,” he says. “That’s one thing we noticed, walking away from Vegas — all our kids are in their early 20s, so being on their cell phones is a major thing. When we did this, everyone was engaged, everyone was talking to each other.”

Rice and Edgerton have developed several “regulars” at the Black Forest — people who visit every time a new menu drops, or even more frequently than that, to introduce friends to the concept. “What did you get for your birthday when you were 12? For Christmas when you were 13? They’re just gifts,” Rice says. “What’s a trip that you went on when you were 14? You probably remember that. That’s what we’re trying to accomplish: an experience people will remember years and years into the future.”

Visitors can make reservations for the Black Forest online; Wyld Pines is located at 2005 SE 192nd Avenue, #100, in Camas, Washington.

Michael Cohen testifies in Trump hush money trial

By CNN's Kara Scannell, Lauren Del Valle and Jeremy Herb in the courthouse

Key takeaways from Michael Cohen's first day of testimony

From CNN's  Jeremy Herb, Lauren del Valle and Kara Scannell

Michael Cohen implicated his former boss  Donald Trump  in the hush money scheme to pay Stormy Daniels just days before the 2016 election, saying he doled out $130,000 at Trump’s direction and was promised reimbursement.

Cohen’s testimony ties together the prosecution’s allegations that Trump broke the law by falsifying business records to reimburse Cohen and conceal the hush money payment that Cohen said he made at Trump’s direction. Trump has pleaded not guilty and denies having an affair with Daniels.

Here are some of the key takeaways from Cohen's first day on the stand:

  • Cohen ties Trump to the Daniels hush money payment: Through roughly five hours of testimony Monday, Cohen walked jurors through how he worked with former National Enquirer editor David Pecker on Trump’s behalf during the 2016 campaign to kill negative stories; how he kept Trump apprised of his hush money negotiations with Keith Davidson, the attorney for Daniels and former Playboy model Karen McDougal; and how Trump approved and was aware of how Cohen would be falsely repaid in 2017 for the Daniels payment as legal services.
  • Cohen ties the hush money reimbursement to Trump, too: Trump is charged with 34 counts of falsifying business records – 11 invoices, 12 vouchers and 11 checks – records that prosecutors say stem from the monthly reimbursements Cohen received in 2017 for the hush money payment he made to Daniels. On Monday, jurors heard through Cohen for the first-time evidence directly connecting Trump to those reimbursements.
  • Cohen describes being Trump’s protector: As Cohen described each media story he killed and nondisclosure agreement he locked down ahead of the 2016 election, it was always in the name of protecting Trump. When it came to the settlement agreement with Daniels, Cohen said he kept control of a document revealing the identities of “David Dennison” and “Peggy Peterson” so that he could protect Trump. And he testified that he used the Essential Consultants LLC to facilitate the payment to Daniels “to protect him and to isolate him from the transaction.” Hoffinger asked Cohen whether he would sometimes bully people. Cohen confirmed he would.

Cohen is expected back in court tomorrow

Donald Trump's ex-attorney and fixer  Michael Cohen  took the stand today to testify about the  Stormy Daniels hush money payment  and Trump's  alleged involvement in the scheme .

He's expected to face more questions tomorrow. Court proceedings are expected to resume at 9:30 a.m. ET.

Michael Cohen took the stand as a key witness in Donald Trump's hush money trial. Here's what he said

From CNN's Elise Hammond

Michael Cohen answers questions from prosecutor Susan Hoffinger on Monday.

Michael Cohen took the stand on Monday in Donald Trump’s hush money trial in New York.

When he was Trump’s personal attorney, Cohen made the $130,000 payment to adult film actress Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election. He landed in federal prison  over that transaction for breaking campaign finance laws.

Through previous witnesses’ testimony, jurors have already heard plenty about Cohen. They have painted an unflattering portrait of an aggressive, impulsive and unlikeable attorney. The former “fixer,” now a critical witness , testified about the payment and Trump’s alleged involvement.

Here’s a look at what Cohen said on the stand today:

  • Relationship with Trump: Cohen said he worked directly for Trump , not the general counsel's office at the Trump Organization. He said working with the press was a “portion” of his job and would sometimes call news outlets and ask them to redact or take articles down. Cohen testified that it was required for him to keep Trump updated about his work.
  • On the presidential run: Cohen said Trump was worried about stories about his personal life coming out as he weighed a run for president, with Trump saying, “Just be prepared there’s going to be a lot of women coming forward,” according to Cohen. He testified that he didn’t have a formal role in the 2016 campaign, but he used his press contacts to be a surrogate .
  • The doorman story: Cohen said he learned about the doorman story circulating about Trump having fathered "a love child” and testified Trump told him to “handle it.” He confirmed that the strategy was to take the story “off the market” for $30,000, and Trump was grateful it wouldn’t be published. Cohen said he went to Trump to tell him the agreement was completed , as well as to get credit for executing it.
  • Karen McDougal: He said Trump told him to make sure the story about former Playboy model Karen McDougal didn’t get released, which he believed meant acquiring it . Cohen recounted a call with Pecker and Trump about the story. When Cohen told Trump the cost of controlling the McDougal story, Cohen testified Trump said, “No problem, I’ll take care of it.” Later, David Pecker, former CEO of the National Enquirer’s parent company, spoke to Cohen and insisted on being reimbursed .
  • "Access Hollywood" tape: When he learned about the video , released by the Washington Post, Cohen said he wanted to "ensure" things were being taken care of properly and that Trump would be protected . He testified that it was Melania Trump’s idea to say the language in the video “was locker room talk.” Cohen recalled thinking the tape would impact women voters.
  • Stormy Daniels: When he initially told Trump about the Stormy Daniels story, Cohen testified that Trump said, “Women are going to hate me” and that it would be “a disaster for the campaign.” Cohen said his former boss told him to work with Pecker to “take care of it.” As the agreement unfolded, Cohen said he kept Trump informed on the deal with Daniels.
  • Timing of Daniel’s payment: Trump wanted the situation with Daniels to be under wraps until after the election “because if I win, it will have no relevance because I'm president. And if I lose, I don't even care,” Trump said, according to Cohen.
  • Making the payment: Cohen said he spoke with Trump twice to get his sign-off before making the payment to Daniels using a company he created , Essential Consultants LLC. He said he would have never gone forward to the bank without Trump’s approval. He testified he also let Trump know he signed the agreement with Daniels.
  • Repayment to Cohen: Trump Organization CFO Allen Weisselberg told Cohen he would be paid $420,000 for Daniel’s payment over 12 months . He testified that the payment series set up for future legal services was actually a reimbursement .

Trump rails against judge and says there's no crime in remarks outside of Manhattan courthouse

From CNN's Maureen Chowdhury

Former President Donald Trump speaks to the press on Monday afternoon.

Donald Trump slammed Judge Juan Merchan and called the hush money trial a "scam" as he left the Manhattan courthouse on Monday.

“This is a scam, I think it’s it’s terrible thing that’s happening to democracy in this country,” Trump said. He then called the case a "rigged deal" and Merchan "conflicted."

He went on to read comments made by his allies regarding the case.

“There’s no fraud here, there’s no crime here," Trump said.

Testimony in Trump's trial continues tomorrow.

The final moments today in the courtroom: Trump stacks his papers and Cohen nods toward jurors

As Judge Juan Merchan gives his daily instructions to the jury, Donald Trump is stacking up his papers and whispering with attorney Todd Blanche.

His hands are folded on the table and he then flips through the papers one more time.

Michael Cohen, for his part, pans the courtroom and then looks down at his hands as Merchan is speaking.

Cohen gives a small smile and nods toward the jurors as Merchan dismisses them for the day.

The key points of Michael Cohen's testimony about how he was reimbursed for the hush money deal

From CNN's Eric Levenson

Michael Cohen is questioned by prosecutor Susan Hoffinger on Monday. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg is in the foreground.

Michael Cohen finished the day’s testimony by explaining how he, former Trump Org. CFO Allen Weisselberg and Donald Trump agreed to reimburse him for the $130,000 hush money payment to Stormy Daniels.

After Trump won the election, Cohen pitched Trump on a set up in which he would serve as Trump’s personal attorney for free but would be paid by companies hoping for insights on Trump.

In early January, Cohen went to Weisselberg about being reimbursed for the $130,000 payment, and Weisselberg agreed, Cohen testified. He showed Weisselberg the wire transfer document, and Weisselberg took handwritten notes calculating what Trump owed Cohen based on their conversations.

Weisselberg suggested Cohen take the money as income rather than as untaxed reimbursements, Cohen testified. "I didn’t really think about it. I just wanted to get my money back,” he said.

According to Cohen, they agreed that Trump would pay him $420,000 in all: $130,000 to reimburse him for the payment to Daniels, $50,000 to reimburse him for unrelated tech services, $180,000 to account for estimated taxes and a $60,000 bonus. The payments would be made over 12 months “as like a legal service rendered since I was then going to be given the title of personal attorney to the president,” Cohen testified.

They presented the plan to Trump, and he approved it, Cohen said. The payments were designed to look like future legal services, but they were actually reimbursement for the Daniels’ deal, he testified.

Cohen never actually put together a retainer agreement for any future work he'd do for Trump, “because I knew there was going to be no compensation,” he testified.

Court is breaking for the day

Miranda Cosgrove is opening up about an extremely disturbing encounter with a stalker.

In a new interview with Bustle , the Mother of the Bride star recounted the traumatic experience, revealing that the stalker lit himself on fire and fatally shot himself in her yard eight years ago.

Cosgrove, who still resides in the same home in Los Angeles, noted to the outlet that a “huge goal” of hers after turning 30 in May 2023 was “to find a place that I feel really safe, to kind of start a new chapter.” While she hasn’t found that safe haven just yet, she explained to the outlet that the experience is “another reason why I go back and forth to my parents’ house so much.”

“I just don’t feel super safe in that house,” she added. “For two years after it happened, I wouldn’t really stay there. Then I got into a relationship and because that person was there with me, I was less scared. But I don’t really like being there on my own that much.”

Cosgrove’s stalker had also shot at a woman who resembled the actress, and years later, Cosgrove bumped into the victim at an event for Kitten Rescue LA.

“This girl came up to me, and she was like, ‘I didn’t know if I should tell you this here or how to say this, but I’m actually the girl that was at your house that got shot at,'” she shared.

Like many, Cosgrove has watched Netflix ‘s new limited series Baby Reindeer , which tells the story of series creator and star Richard Gadd ‘s own stalker.

“I feel like if that were me, having to go back through your most terrible experiences and then try to act them [out], that’d be so hard,” she said.

Cosgrove was speaking with Bustle to promote her new film, Netflix’s Mother of the Bride , which also features Brooke Shields . While speaking with Decider , Shields said she “had to not let [her]self fangirl” over Cosgrove, despite the “hours and hours” she had spent watching her on iCarly with her daughters.

“I had to really readjust, and say to myself, ‘No, this is a young actress. She’s not a little baby. She’s 30. She’s a consummate professional,’” Shields said, describing her costar as “one of the most professional people [she’s] ever, ever worked with.”

Steve Buscemi punched while walking in New York City

Steve Buscemi attends a premiere in New York on on April 27, 2023.

Acclaimed actor Steve Buscemi was walking in New York City last week when someone punched him in broad daylight on a Manhattan street.

The assault occurred just before noon Wednesday, the police department’s public information office said.

Police arrived to find Buscemi, 66, with bruising, swelling and bleeding to his left eye. He was stable when emergency services took him to a hospital, where he was treated.

An investigation continues, police said, and no arrests have been made.

“Steve Buscemi was assaulted in Mid-Town Manhattan, another victim of a random act of violence in the city,” Buscemi’s publicist wrote in an email statement. “He is ok and appreciates everyone’s well wishes, though incredibly sad for everyone that this has happened to while also walking the streets of NY.”

Buscemi, the Golden Globe and Emmy Award winner, is known for his roles in the HBO shows “The Sopranos” and “Boardwalk Empire” and for his versatility across dozens of movies in his decadeslong career.

The seemingly random attack is the latest in a string of bizarre incidents in which New York City pedestrians — including several celebrities and influencers — have been attacked walking on the street.

In March, fellow former “Boardwalk Empire” cast member Michael Stuhlbarg was also attacked walking through Central Park. Police alleged that Xavier Israel, 27, threw a rock that struck Stuhlbarg in the back of the head, and Stuhlbarg reportedly chased him out of the park. Israel was arrested and charged with assault, police said.

Multiple women in the city have shared stories on TikTok in recent months of their own assaults while they were returning home from class, traveling to work and walking a dog, among other activities. At least two of the women online described suspects with similar characteristics.
