Objectives: It is important to evaluate the characteristics of the most cited articles in any specialty. The number of citations may be a proxy for clinical and research activity. The objectives of the present methodological study were (1) to report the characteristics of the 300 most cited articles in periodontology and (2) to explore the association of these characteristics with the number of citations.

Methods: We searched in the Web of Science database for the 300 most cited articles published in periodontology on June 15, 2015. We described characteristics of the articles such as type of study, type of scientific journal, topic reported, year of publication, affiliation of the first author of the article, and impact factor. Linear regression analysis was used to investigate associations of these variables with the number of citations.

Results: The search retrieved approximately 155,356 publications; out of the studies that met the eligibility criteria, the 300 most cited were included for analysis. Comprising more than 50 % of the included articles, basic biology and the detection of bacteria were the most prevalent topics. Narrative reviews were the most frequent type of article (27 % of the sample). Regression analysis demonstrated that some characteristics, for example "narrative reviews," are more prone to be cited than others.

Conclusion: We conclude that scientific evolution in periodontology has been based more on narrative reviews than on reproducible systematic reviews.

Clinical relevance: Future research is encouraged to elucidate the extent to which scientific progress is improved through systematic compared with narrative reviews.

Hot Topics in Clinical Oral Implants Research: Recent Trends in Literature Coverage

This systematic review looks at thematic trends in clinical research publications on dental implants. For this purpose, MEDLINE electronic searches as well as additional hand searches of six main journals in the field were conducted. A total of 2875 clinical studies published between 2001 and 2012 met the inclusion criteria and were subjected to statistical analysis. Hot topics in dental implant literature included immediate loading (14.3%), bone substitutes (11.6%), cross-arch full bridges (8.0%), and immediate implant placement (7.5%). A significant increase in scientific interest for immediate loading (+6.3%, p = 0.001), platform switching (+2.9%, p = 0.001), guided implant surgery (+1.9%, p = 0.011), growth factors ( p = 0.014, +1.4%), piezoelectric surgery (+1.3%, p = 0.015), and restorative materials (+0.7%, p = 0.011) was found. A declining scientific interest in onlay grafting (−0.3%, p = 0.042) was recorded. The findings regarding current clinical oral implants research tie in with better-informed consumers and increased patient demands. Our results demonstrate an increasing interest in techniques that avoid complicated procedures such as bone grafting and that reduce treatment duration.

1. Introduction

The present special issue of Dentistry Journal deals with “Advances in Implant Dentistry,” and the following keywords denote hot topics in this field: template-guided implant placement, minimally invasive techniques, short lengths and reduced implant diameters, novel bone grafting techniques, medically compromised patients, peri-implantitis treatment, immediate placement and restoration, transition from a failing dentition, CAD/CAM prosthetics, and optical intraoral impressions. As the first paper in this special issue, the following review aims to provide the background to recent trends and “hot topics” in advanced and minimally invasive oral implant treatment [ 1 ].

The concept of osseointegration of oral implants was introduced by Branemark 40 years ago and set the precedent for new knowledge in oral medicine. Since then, oral implantology has become one of the most investigated topics in dental medicine, with exponential growth in the use of implant products [ 2 ]. Data shows that the number of implants used for oral rehabilitation in the USA increased ten-fold between 1983 and 2002 and also ten-fold from 2000 to 2010 [ 3 ]. While previously the primary aim of research on oral implantology was to find ways to rehabilitate function [ 4 ], many efforts nowadays are focused on the shortening of treatment procedures, simplifying surgical techniques, and esthetic improvement [ 5 ]. It is well known that oral implantology is a prosthetically driven field with a major surgical component [ 6 ]. Therefore, the current state of the art in implant dentistry represents advances in both surgical and prosthodontic techniques [ 5 ].

Keeping pace with research development, the aim of this systematic review was to investigate contemporary issues in oral implantology research and to perform a topical trend analysis of clinical studies published in the time period from 2001 to 2012.

2. Material and Methods

2.1. search strategy.

A MEDLINE electronic literature search was conducted, limited to clinical studies on dental implants published between 2001 and 2012. The search term “dental implant,” sorted by “year of publication” was used in order to capture all relevant articles [ 7 ]. Additional hand searching was performed to examine six main journals in the field: The International Journal of Maxillofacial Implants , Journal of Oral Implantology , Clinical Oral Implant Related Research , Implant Dentistry , European Journal of Oral Implantology , and Clinical Oral Implant Research . Two reviewers independently identified all trials [ 8 ]. The PubMed search initially identified 15,695 publications, and 5048 additional results were identified by hand search. These studies were screened for their relevance based upon a threshold set [ 9 ]:

• inclusion criteria: prospective and retrospective studies, cross-sectional studies, case-control studies, case reports with at least 10 patients
• exclusion criteria: non-English publications, statistical studies, animal studies, finite element analyses, in vitro studies, review articles, and case series with fewer than 10 patients.

A total number of 3695 articles were subjected to abstract review. Where the abstract provided little information, a full text analysis was performed. Authors of potentially relevant publications, which were not available or lacked data, were contacted and asked for cooperation. Ultimately, 2875 clinical studies were identified as meeting the inclusion criteria. Our goal was to investigate how trends change over time as regards the topics examined in modern implant dentistry research. In this respect, we have determined that 31 topics were appropriate: 23 of them concerned surgical issues and 8 dealt with prosthodontic issues ( Table 1 ). First, all relevant publications were screened for the topics listed in Table 1 independently by two reviewers. Thereafter, the results were verified, and all doubtful publications were discussed before the final decision was taken.

2.2. Statistical Analysis

As mentioned above, 2875 publications were analyzed. In order to find statistical trends in respect to the relevant topics between 2001 and 2012, Poisson regression analysis was performed, taking the level of significance as p ≤ 0.05, using R-project statistical software version 3.1.0. This statistical test was used to model count data, which in this case was the number of publications. p -values were calculated for every topic, taking into account the relative number publications per topic from the total number of publications.

The surgical and prosthodontic topics of interest were computed as percentages of the total number of publications ( Table 1 ). Among the most covered surgical topics in the literature were immediate loading (14.3%), bone substitutes (11.6%), immediate implant placement (7.5%), simultaneous implant placement with bone augmentation (6.4%), onlay grafting (4.3%), medically compromised patients (4.0%), healing modality (3.7%), transcrestal sinus floor elevation (3.0%), flapless surgery (2.7%), socket grafting (2.6%), and guided surgery (2.4%). Immediate loading (14.3%), cross-arch implant bridges (8.0%), early loading (4.5%), and platform switching (1.7%) were ranked as the most prevalent prosthodontic issues in current oral implant research.

The surgical issues were the more prevalent topics, demonstrating an increasing rate of publications over the time in terms of mean coverage (0.53 ± 0.01) per publication ( Figure 1 ), as compared to prosthodontic issues (0.33 ± 0.05 hits). The mean coverage values were estimated based on yearly ratios: the number of prosthodontic/surgical publications per year in relation to the total number of publications per year. The significant increase in publications on surgical issues over the years was demonstrated by Poisson regression analysis ( p = 0.002).

A total of eight topics showed significant trends ( p < 0.05) over the years 2001 to 2012 ( Table 2 ). Immediate loading demonstrated the highest increase with a positive change of +6.3% and p = 0.001 ( Figure 2 a). Platform switching (+2.9%, p = 0.001) was the second topic showing a significant increase; however, only one relevant article was detected between 2001 and 2006 ( Figure 2 b). These topics were followed by guided implant surgery (+1.9%, p = 0.011), growth factors (+1.4%, p = 0.014), piezoelectric surgery (+1.3%, p = 0.015), and restorative materials (+0.7%, p = 0.011). The green line represents the percentage of the total number of publications for every year. Since there were no publications on platform switching between 2002 and 2005, there is a negative trend line intercept starting from 2001 ( Figure 2 b). Decreasing scientific interest and a corresponding downward trend were recorded for the topic onlay grafting (−0.3%, p = 0.042).

4. Discussion

Comparisons of published clinical trials per year revealed a trend of increasing interest in conducting clinical trials, starting with 137 relevant articles in the year 2001 and reaching the number of 446 publications in the year 2012. However, even the total number of 3695 articles is smaller than the total number of 4655 clinical studies published between 1989 and 1999 reported by Russo et al. [ 10 ]. Given that the number of publications increased with every year, it was considered more appropriate to perform Poisson regression analysis related to percentage-based values rather than related to absolute values for all topics.

Immediate loading proved to be the most studied topic in the last decade ( Figure 2 a). This avid scientific interest can be explained by several advantages it offers, such as shortened treatment protocols, immediate rehabilitation of the function, and high patient satisfaction. Meta-analyses on single-tooth implant placement have shown encouraging results for the immediate loading protocol as a promising alternative to conventional loading, as it may be equally successful and may not significantly affect marginal bone resorption and implant success rates [ 11 , 12 , 13 ]. Another meta-analysis by Papaspyridakos et al. [ 14 ] reported that there was no significant difference between immediate, early, and conventional loading in edentulous patients with fixed prostheses, and all three protocols showed a high level of success. However, other reviewers disagree with this assessment of the unimpaired success of the immediate loading protocol. A meta-analysis of clinical studies comparing the immediate and conventional loading of single tooth implants discovered that immediate loading has a significantly higher risk of implant failure [ 15 ]. Schimmel and coworkers [ 16 ] concluded that, despite the high implant survival rates, the conventional and early loading protocols are superior to immediate loading as better documented protocols, providing better results in the first year of loading. A survey among implantologists from 16 countries all over the world stated that immediate loading was the treatment protocol most accepted by dentists in Australia and Europe [ 17 ]. Based on these controversial statements in the literature, it can be concluded that there is still a lack of well-designed RCTs concerning loading protocol [ 18 ] and immediate loading may well retain its place as a hot topic of discussion over the coming years.

The platform-switching concept arose in 1980 with the introduction of the wide diameter implants. Due to the lack of commercially available matching components for wide diameter implants, the standard-diameter abutments were used. Later, it was found that “platform-switched” implants demonstrated osseointegration with less initial crestal bone loss and were thus superior to the “platform-matched implants” [ 19 ]. However, the first introduction of this concept appeared in 2005 [ 20 ]. Radiographic observation over a period of 13 years demonstrated that platform switching resulted in little or no crestal bone loss as compared to the conventional implants, whereas marginal bone resorption of 1.5 mm on average was accepted as one of the criteria for success of the dental implant [ 21 ]. Our study shows that the increasing publication rate of clinical studies happened to coincide with the first official introduction of this concept, with a positive linear trend for this topic starting in 2005 ( Figure 2 b). Since guided surgery is performed in combination with the flapless procedure in most cases, [ 22 ] the similarity in literature coverage, illustrated in both scatter plots, does not come as a surprise ( Figure 2 c,d).

In contrast to the last decade of the 20th century, when the main progress in the field of oral implant research was made in alveolar bone resorption management to refine the different graft techniques [ 23 ], our findings show that in the 21st century there has been increasing interest in methods developed to overcome the grafting procedures and even a loss of interest in one of the most used augmentation techniques, i.e. , onlay bone grafting. It seems that dental implant scientific work is inspired more by the patient’s appraisals [ 24 ], seeking to improve minimally invasive surgical techniques [ 25 ], diminish patient morbidity, and shorten the treatment time. However, the role of industrial funding for conducting clinical studies should be taken into consideration. 32.4% of the clinical trials are supported by industry as a source of funding, which is a suitable way for companies not only to comply with safety and efficacy standards, but also to introduce their new products to the market [ 26 ]. This industry sponsorship may lead to biased reporting and pro-industry conclusions [ 27 ]. This does have the potential to reflect on ongoing trends in clinical research. In this connection for instance, the relatively innovative technique of guided implant surgery provides less painful and invasive treatment but at the same time is a more difficult and expensive procedure than conventional implant placement, demonstrating the same survival rate. However, a survey by Hof and coworkers [ 28 ] showed that the main priority for the patients when it comes to implant therapy remains the predictability of treatment success. The achievements brought about by ongoing clinical research, such as improved quality, ease of use of implant systems, as well as shorter treatment duration [ 29 ] may provide grounds for future researchers to face the challenge of preserving the perspectives of clinical implant research, and specifically, to enhance the relationship between private practice and science without involving marketing.

In order to adhere to ethical rules on explicit reporting, including also the disadvantages of any study, the researchers are obligated to report their study’s limitations. Undoubtedly, meta-analysis is the “gold standard” for performing any systematic review aiming at assessing treatment effects. Given that the variable investigated in the present study was the number of publications, the Poisson regression was selected as a statistical tool. The Poisson regression is used to model count data (in the present case this is the number of publications) and is an appropriate statistical method for predicting trends. Therefore, no methods estimating risk of bias, quality design, or heterogeneity of the studies provided by the meta-analysis were applied in this study.

A further limitation is presented by the use of only one database source. The findings in the present work are based on analysis, including studies from MEDLINE, and an additional hand search of six journals. However, the search strategy did not consider other databases such as EMBASE and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials.

In conclusion, the analysis of scientific literature on dental implants revealed several hot topics in the time period between 2001 and 2012. The most frequently covered surgical issues were bone substitutes (11.6%) and immediate implant placement, (7.5%), while the most prevalent prosthodontic topics involved immediate loading (14.3%) and cross-arch full bridges (8.0%). Given that the topics demonstrating the highest increase in interest were prosthodontic topics, i.e. , immediate loading (+6.3%) and platform switching (+2.9%), the interest in researching prosthodontic topics will most likely continue to increase.

How to Craft Your Ideal Thesis Research Topic

Writing your undergraduate thesis is probably one of the most interesting parts of studying, especially because you get to choose your area of study. But as both a student and a teacher who’s helped countless students develop their research topics, I know this freedom can be just as intimidating as it is liberating.

Fortunately, there’a a step-by-step process you can follow that will help make the whole process a lot easier. In this article, I’ll show you how to choose a unique, specific thesis topic that’s true to your passions and interests, while making a contribution to your field.

Choose a topic that you’re interested in

First things first: double-check with your teachers or supervisor if there are any constraints on your research topic. Once your parameters are clear, it’s time to identify what lights you up — after all, you’re going to be spending a lot of time thinking about it.

Within your field of study, you probably already have some topics that have grabbed your attention more than others. This can be a great place to start. Additionally, consider using the rest of your academic and extra-curricular interests as a source of ideas. At this stage, you only need a broad topic before you narrow it down to a specific question. 

If you’re feeling stuck, here are some things to try:

• Look back through old course notes to remind yourself of topics you previously covered. Do any of these inspire you?
• Talk to potential supervisors about your ideas, as they can point you toward areas you might not have considered.
• Think about the things you enjoy in everyday life — whether that’s cycling, cinema, cooking, or fashion — then consider if there are any overlaps with your field of study.
• Imagine you have been asked to give a presentation or record a podcast in the next three days. What topics would you feel confident discussing?
• Watch a selection of existing lectures or explainer videos, or listen to podcasts by experts in your field. Note which topics you feel curious to explore further.
• Discuss your field of study with teachers friends and family, some with existing knowledge and some without. Which aspects do you enjoy talking about? 

By doing all this, you might uncover some unusual and exciting avenues for research. For example, when writing my Master’s dissertation, I decided to combine my field of study (English teaching methodology) with one of my passions outside work (creative writing). In my undergraduate course, a friend drew on her lived experience of disability to look into the literary portrayal of disability in the ancient world. 

Do your research

Once you’ve chosen your topic of interest, it’s time to dive into research. This is a really important part of this early process because it allows you to:

• See what other people have written about the topic — you don’t want to cover the same old ground as everyone else.
• Gain perspective on the big questions surrounding the topic. 
• Go deeper into the parts that interest you to help you decide where to focus.
• Start building your bibliography and a bank of interesting quotations. 

A great way to start is to visit your library for an introductory book. For example, the “A Very Short Introduction” series from the Oxford University Press provides overviews of a range of themes. Similar types of overviews may have the title “ A Companion to [Subject]” or “[Subject] A Student Companion”. Ask your librarian or teacher if you’re not sure where to begin. 

Your introductory volume can spark ideas for further research, and the bibliography can give you some pointers about where to go next. You can also use keywords to research online via academic sites like JStor or Google Scholar. Check which subscriptions are available via your institution.

At this stage, you may not wish to read every single paper you come across in full — this could take a very long time and not everything will be relevant. Summarizing software like Wordtune could be very useful here.

You can also use Wordtune for semantic search. In this case, the tool focuses its summary around your chosen search term, making it even easier to get what you need from the paper.

As you go, make sure you keep organized notes of what you’ve read, including the author and publication information and the page number of any citations you want to use. 

Some people are happy to do this process with pen and paper, but if you prefer a digital method, there are several software options, including Zotero , EndNote , and Mendeley . Your institution may have an existing subscription so check before you sign up.

Narrowing down your thesis research topic

Now you’ve read around the topic, it’s time to narrow down your ideas so you can craft your final question. For example, when it came to my undergraduate thesis, I knew I wanted to write about Ancient Greek religion and I was interested in the topic of goddesses. So, I:

• Did some wide reading around the topic of goddesses
• Learned that the goddess Hera was not as well researched as others and that there were some fascinating aspects I wanted to explore
• Decided (with my supervisor’s support) to focus on her temples in the Argive region of Greece

As part of this process, it can be helpful to consider the “5 Ws”: why, what, who, when, and where, as you move from the bigger picture to something more precise. 

Why did you choose this research topic?

Come back to the reasons you originally chose your theme. What grabbed you? Why is this topic important to you — or to the wider world? In my example, I knew I wanted to write about goddesses because, as a woman, I was interested in how a society in which female lives were often highly controlled dealt with having powerful female deities. My research highlighted Hera as one of the most powerful goddesses, tying into my key interest.

What are some of the big questions about your topic?

During your research, you’ll probably run into the same themes time and time again. Some of the questions that arise may not have been answered yet or might benefit from a fresh look. 

Equally, there may be questions that haven’t yet been asked, especially if you are approaching the topic from a modern perspective or combining research that hasn’t been considered before. This might include taking a post-colonial, feminist, or queer approach to older texts or bringing in research using new scientific methods.

In my example, I knew there were still controversies about why so many temples to the goddess Hera were built in a certain region, and was keen to explore these further.

Who is the research topic relevant to?

Considering the “who” might help you open up new avenues. Is there a particular audience you want to reach? What might they be interested in? Is this a new audience for this field? Are there people out there who might be affected by the outcome of this research — for example, people with a particular medical condition — who might be able to use your conclusions?

Which period will you focus on?

Depending on the nature of your field, you might be able to choose a timeframe, which can help narrow the topic down. For example, you might focus on historical events that took place over a handful of years, look at the impact of a work of literature at a certain point after its publication, or review scientific progress over the last five years. 

With my thesis, I decided to focus on the time when the temples were built rather than considering the hundreds of years for which they have existed, which would have taken me far too long.

Where does your topic relate to?

Place can be another means of narrowing down the topic. For example, consider the impact of your topic on a particular neighborhood, city, or country, rather than trying to process a global question. 

In my example, I chose to focus my research on one area of Greece, where there were lots of temples to Hera. This meant skipping other important locations, but including these would have made the thesis too wide-ranging.

Create an outline and get feedback

Once you have an idea of what you are going to write about, create an outline or summary and get feedback from your teacher(s). It’s okay if you don’t know exactly how you’re going to answer your thesis question yet, but based on your research you should have a rough plan of the key points you want to cover. So, for me, the outline was as follows:

• Context: who was the goddess Hera?
• Overview of her sanctuaries in the Argive region
• Their initial development 
• Political and cultural influences
• The importance of the mythical past

In the final thesis, I took a strong view on why the goddess was so important in this region, but it took more research, writing, and discussion with my supervisor to pin down my argument.

To choose a thesis research topic, find something you’re passionate about, research widely to get the big picture, and then move to a more focused view. Bringing a fresh perspective to a popular theme, finding an underserved audience who could benefit from your research, or answering a controversial question can make your thesis stand out from the crowd.

About Periodontal (Gum) Disease

• Periodontal (gum) diseases, such as gingivitis and periodontitis, are largely preventable and treatable. The key is good oral hygiene, overall self-care, and regular care from a dental health care provider.
• Periodontal disease refers to conditions that involve inflammation and infection of the tissues (gum and bone) that surround and support the teeth.

Periodontal (gum) disease is a broad term for conditions involving inflammation and infection of the tissues (gum and bone) that surround and support the teeth. 1 2

Gingivitis is a type of gum disease that involves inflammation of the gums. It is largely preventable and treatable with a combination of routine oral hygiene and professional cleanings. 1 2

Periodontitis, which also involves bone loss around teeth, is an irreversible condition that can be slowed down and managed with professional treatment. 1 2

Periodontitis is a very common type of gum disease among US adults:

• About 4 in 10 US adults 30 years or older had a mild, moderate, or severe level of periodontitis in 2009–2014. 3
• About 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women 30 years or older had some level of periodontitis. 3

Periodontitis is more common as people age. About 60% of adults 65 years or older had periodontitis in 2009–2014. 3 4

Two of the most common types of gum disease are gingivitis and periodontitis.

The mildest form of gum disease is gingivitis, an inflammatory condition where the gums become red, swollen, and may easily bleed. Gingivitis is a reversible condition. But if left untreated, it can lead to a gum disease called periodontitis. 1 4

Periodontitis

Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory condition that leads to mild, moderate, or severe destruction of the supporting tissues around teeth. A main feature of periodontitis is bone loss around the affected teeth. 2 5 Untreated periodontitis can also make other chronic conditions, such as diabetes, worse. 1 6

Periodontitis cannot be reversed, but it can be slowed down and managed with professional treatment. Periodontitis and cavities (tooth decay) are the two leading causes of tooth loss. 7

Signs and symptoms

Gum disease can often become serious before a person notices that they have symptoms. 1 A yearly dental checkup can help to detect and prevent this condition.

Signs and symptoms of gum disease may include: 1

• Red, swollen, or tender gums.
• Bleeding gums.
• Gums that have moved away or downward from your teeth.
• Loose or sensitive teeth.
• Painful chewing.
• Any change in the way your teeth fit together when biting.
• Any change in how well your partial denture fits.

Risk factors

Research is ongoing to learn more about the risk factors for gum disease. Some studies have indicated an association between gum disease and certain factors or characteristics, including:

• Smoking. 1 3 4 8
• Diabetes. 4 6 8 9
• Poor oral hygiene. 4 10
• Medication with oral side effects. 1 4
• Genetics. 1 4 8
• Malocclusion (crooked teeth), clenching, or bruxism (grinding teeth). 1 4
• Underlying systemic conditions. 1 4 8 12
• Hormonal changes, such as with pregnancy or menopause. 1 4 8
• Poor nutrition or obesity. 1 4 13

Who is at risk

About 62% of US adults 30 years or older who are current smokers had periodontitis in 2009–2014. 3

Among US adults 30 years or older, periodontitis also disproportionately affects those who are: 3

• Living below 100% of the federal poverty level (60%).
• Living with diabetes (60%).
• Mexican American (60%).
• Non-Hispanic Black (57%).

It is normal for some bacteria to live in a healthy mouth. 14 Bacteria in the mouth constantly produce and dwell within a sticky, removable film on tooth surfaces called plaque. 1

If plaque is left to build up on a tooth, it can lead to inflammation around the tooth and result in gingivitis. Plaque can be removed regularly with toothbrushing and flossing. If it is not removed, it will usually harden into tartar (also called calculus). Tartar buildup cannot be removed with toothbrushing. Professional treatment is needed to remove it.

Bacteria in buildup can spread below the gumline and lead to the formation of a periodontal "pocket." This pocket is an abnormal deepening of the space between tooth surfaces and gum tissues. Bacteria can release toxins in the pocket that make inflammation worse. 1 2 15

As this process continues, it contributes to the destruction of gum tissues and bone loss around the teeth, which is a main feature of periodontitis.

Gingivitis can be largely prevented and treated with a combination of self-care and professional cleanings. More severe forms of gum disease can be managed by a dental health care provider and may include referral to a specialist called a periodontist. 16

To help prevent or manage gum diseases, it is important to:

• Brush twice daily and floss every day to remove plaque and debris.
• Get regular professional cleanings.
• Have a dental checkup at least once a year, or more often if recommended by your health care provider.

Treatment and recovery

Treatment for periodontitis might include:

• A non-surgical procedure commonly known as "scaling and root planing" 17 or “deep cleaning” of the affected tooth and root surfaces.
• Prescribed medication, such as an oral rinse or medicine placed directly under the affected gums.
• Surgical procedures. 18

What CDC is doing

CDC's Division of Oral Health (DOH) works with key partners to improve and sustain the surveillance of gum disease in the US adult population. These partners have included the American Academy of Periodontology and the American Dental Association.

DOH efforts to monitor and address gum disease include:

• Developing and testing the validity of measures that can be used to track gum disease at national, state, and local levels.
• Updating methods to simplify how data on gum disease are collected from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey participants.
• Developing simple gum disease screening tools for use in clinical settings.
• Working to integrate medical and dental care.
