Introduction

As a hub for economic and litigation consulting specialists, Analysis Group is a rare creature in the consulting world: a firm that is all but immune to the vagaries of the business cycle. As long as there is a need to estimate economic losses and damages and conduct statistical analyses (among other things), there will be a demand for Analysis Group’s services. As a result, it maintains a very stable employee base and recruits at all levels of educational attainment, from those fresh out of undergrad to Ph.D. holders—provided, of cour...

With a reputation for high quality work in a highly academic environment, Analysis Group insiders sometimes present their firm as more of a lifestyle choice than an employer. To be clear: that’s a good thing. For those with the chops to handle the due diligences and complicated economic analyses, there are few outfits in the industry that come close to taking care of their employees as this firm.

One of the most impressive features of a career at the firm is the amount of time and care that goes into development opportunities: not only does this firm provide consultants with training and almost daily access to top experts who are even willing to serve as mentors, it also has a program to sponsor junior consultants’ grad school studies.

“AG is and has been my second home/family for over a decade.”

“Even with all of its flaws, Analysis Group is the best place I’ve worked, and the most academic setting that I’ve ever been in. It’s the only job where I have consistently felt challenged and have never grown bored. It has introduced me to so many new people and perspectives on healthcare, which is the industry I’m most passionate about. I have full confidence that after working here I can take on any job as well as higher education, whether it is an MBA or JD or PhD.”

“For many partners, this is the only place they have ever worked. People make enormous progress in their careers and very few leave.”

“It comes down to the people. There are a lot of kind and humble people here. Our work can be demanding, but we can always lean on each other for support. If I'm going through a tough time, there is always at least someone I feel comfortable opening up to. I've built many great relationships here, including friendships that I hope will last even after some of us leave the firm. I'm not sure if I'll be able to have such a great support network in a different firm.”

“The work itself is great, and the people are smart. The career can be a grind, but if you kind of like the grind, it can be very satisfying.”

  • Hiring Process
  • Interview Questions

“Creative, independent, and self-motivated. We want folks who could either get a PhD in economics, or people who could get an MBA, but love math. Looking for careful thinkers with a lot of curiosity.”

“Our ideal candidate is well-rounded, possessing both the technical skills for the quantitative work and soft skills to be a good team player who we'll enjoy working with. Because we are in a niche industry, someone who demonstrates that they understand and are keen on what we do is also important.”

“The ideal candidate will have evidence of being smart, resourceful, and hard working. Evidence of being able to collaborate well is also very important.”

“There are usually two rounds of interviews. The ideal candidate thinks like an economist and is curious, very smart, and can think like a statistician.”

“We have a coffee chat. An initial interview and then four back-to-back interviews each focused on analyzing a different quality (data analysis and research experience, communication, teamwork, and general). Our ideal candidate can code in multiple languages, has conducted research independently and as part of a team, has good oral and written communication, has knowledge of the firm and multiple practice areas, pays attention to detail, and is receptive to feedback.”

Economics consulting?

Anyone know much about economics consulting? Compass Lexecon, NERA, Cornerstone, etc?

I graduated in 2013, top 50 school (unfortunately not top 25), >3.9 GPA, math major, econ minor. Been working as an actuarial analyst for a year, pretty good computer skills w/ Excel, Access, VBA, some SQL. No statistical software experience.

I think I have at least some shot of getting into economics consulting, although the lack of statistical software knowledge and the fact that I have already graduated and I'm not from a target school will probably hurt significantly, so if I did, it probably wouldn't be at one of the big firms. I also don't have a great econ background - I have the minor, but it didn't require econometrics, and honestly I think it was pretty easy and may not have given me the background I'd need to definitively succeed in case interviews, if I ever got that far. I don't have any sort of research experience.

I'm trying to weigh my options to see if this is worth pursuing. It's possible that I may need to take a slight pay cut, and I'd likely be moving somewhere with a greater cost of living (e.g. NY, DC). I also probably would need to go to grad school at some point, which is not something that's necessary in my current career path.

However, I really really really think I'd be interested in economics consulting. After graduating, I became really interested in public policy and also in stuff like anti-trust, mergers, and competition matters. My job right now is good, but I think I'd like to do something that I really genuinely found interesting.

Does anyone know much about this field? What's the regular career trajectory like? Do you absolutely have to get an MBA or PhD at some point? Is this just to progress or would you probably get let go if you stayed an analyst forever? Are the hours really crazy? Do you need a masters to get started?

Should I just stay where I'm at? Or should I try to apply and see if it turns into anything?

Directorate for Education and Skills

The Education and Skills Directorate is one of twelve substantive departments of the OECD and provides policy analysis and advice on education to help individuals and nations to identify and develop the knowledge and skills that drive better jobs and better lives, generate prosperity and promote social inclusion.

Select a language

The OECD Directorate for Education and Skills seeks to help individuals and nations to identify and develop the knowledge, skills and values that drive better jobs and better lives, generate prosperity and promote social inclusion. It assists OECD countries and partner economies in designing and managing their education and skills systems, and in implementing reforms, so that citizens can develop the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values they need throughout their lives.

How we work

The work of the Directorate for Education and Skills is overseen by four bodies, each with its own mandate, membership, and programme of work and budget, to help deliver work under the overall governance of the OECD Council:

  • The Education Policy Committee, which also provides strategic oversight of our work
  • The Centre for Educational Research and Innovation Governing Board (CERI)
  • The Programme for International Student Assessment Governing Board (PISA)
  • The Programme for Teaching and Learning International Survey Governing Board (TALIS)
  • The Board of Participating Countries for the Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC) is overseen by both the Education Policy Committee and the Employment, Labour and Social Affairs Committee.

What we are working on

The best way for education systems to improve is to learn what works from each other. We deploy large scale surveys and reviews, designing common methodological and analytical frameworks for utmost comparability of empirical evidence from different education systems. We collect data about nearly all aspects of countries’ education systems from key policies, teacher practises, adult proficiency, and early childhood learning and well-being to how 15-year-olds perform in mathematics and what their attitudes are about global issues like climate change.

  • The International Early Learning and Child Well-Being Study
  • OECD Survey on Social and Emotional Skills

Assisting countries with policy development and implementation

We help countries answer important questions facing education policy makers and practitioners alike: how to identify and develop the right skills and turn them into better jobs and better lives; how best to allocate resources in education to support social and economic development; and how to offer everyone the chance to make the most of their abilities at every age and stage of life OECD and partner countries look to our expertise to review their education and skills systems, and assist them in developing and implementing policies to improve them. We conduct reviews ranging from those on individual national education policy to comparative educational policy and thematic peer-analysis. We review and support the development of higher education systems with analysis on resource use and labour market relevance. All of these provide in-depth analyses and advice that draw on OECD data resources, national policy documents and research, and field-based interviewing by OECD review teams. Comparative thematics, covering areas such as ECEC in a digital world, diversity, equity and inclusion in education, teacher policy and transitions in upper secondary education, are based on a common conceptual framework and methodology developed with advice from a group of national experts.

Through tailored implementation support the directorate offers countries assistance in implementing policy, from curriculum reform to helping schools become effective learning organisations. It also brings countries and stakeholders together in a variety of fora to exchange ideas, an important step in the policymaking process.

Pivoting to tomorrow

What knowledge, skills, attitudes and values will students need in a swiftly evolving world? We develop long-term “leading-edge” thinking that looks beyond the current state of education to what it can become. These multiple-scenario analyses nourish our ground-breaking Education 2030 work on curriculum. They inform international debate and inspire policy processes to shape the future of education. The one certainty about the future of education is that it will be a digital one though we cannot know to what degree. In staying ahead of the EdTech curve, the directorate advises countries on the fast-changing potential of digital tools like robotics, blockchain and artificial intelligence, and how they can be integrated and used to equitably boost teaching, learning and administrative performance. The digitalisation of education is just one of the many strategic foresight areas the OECD’s Centre for Educational Research and Innovation (CERI) focuses on. Its exploration of best practices flagged by international comparisons helps countries move towards the frontiers of education.
