From application fees to marks sheets, from TOEFL to interviews, find out all about the Harvard University admission requirements for Indian students here!

Hello everyone! Application process is a stressful time, there’s so much to remember. Each application has different requirements, different deadlines, and exhaustive processes. I remember the time I was applying for my masters, and along with a full-time (very demanding job), the admission process was super tiring and me, emotionally and physically!

That’s why I have created a basic list of Harvard University admission requirements for Indian students, so you don’t miss out on anything.

There are no extra Harvard University admission requirements for Indian students, other than the standardized English language test, which is required of all international applicants. Submit the online application form with required fee. Other than that, submit your GRE/SAT/GMAT score, TOEFL score, college/school marksheets, recommendation letters and personal statement. Some Harvard schools also have additional requirements such as resume, portfolio or interview.

So let’s go over the list of Harvard University admission requirements one by one.

1. Digital Application

Most universities have now made digital applications mandatory. Harvard University has had digital applications for many years now. The digital application is the first thing you should submit , because once they formally receive your duly filled in application form, only then are your other application materials like transcripts and test scores accepted by the university’s admissions office.

harvard-university-what kind of students get into

Of course, be sure to check the deadline of the digital application . The sooner you submit it, the better it is, as admissions offices sometimes keep pre-shortlisting students based on these. So submitting your digital application before deadline/asap is one of the first Harvard University admission requirements for Indian students.   application requirements for Harvard College

2. Application Fee

The digital application has to be submitted with the application fee, which may be $90 or so depending on the College or graduate school you’re applying to. You can check the application fee in your school’s website. Some schools may even waive the application fee if requested by students who have financial difficulty paying it.

3. Standardized Test Scores

There are many different types of standardized admission tests. And schools almost always require you to digitally transmit the scores of the required test(s). Here are some examples of tests required by different schools:

1. Harvard College requires standardized test scores from either the SAT or ACT (with or without writing). They even recommend submitting two SAT subject tests, neither of which may be the SAT II English Language Proficiency Test (ELPT).

2. Harvard Law School (HLS) requires the score of LSAT to be submitted.

3. Harvard Business School (HBS) and Harvard Kennedy School (HKS) accept Graduate Record Exam ( GRE ) or Graduate Management Admissions Test ( GMAT ) test scores.

4. Many Harvard graduate schools such as Ed School and Design school accept GRE scores.

So check your school’s website to see which score they accept. Please note that the GRE/GMAT/LSAT/SAT scores need to be sent to the university directly from the testing service , otherwise they’re not reviewed. So be sure to take your school’s institution code with you before you appear for the test.

Average GRE Scores for Harvard Graduate Schools

Additionally, make sure to take an early test date so as to ensure the testing service sends your scores to your school before the deadline . Schools only accept recent test scores, mostly a GRE/LSAT needs to have been taken within 5 years of the deadline . So check your school’s website to see if your old score is still vaild or not (they give exact dates).

If you’ve taken more than one GRE test, some schools check your scores from both tests to compare your performance over time. So keep that in mind before you make up your mind to take the test again.

Also check out:  What GRE Score is Required for Harvard University?

4. English Language Test – TOEFL

All international students, including Indians are required to take the standardized English language tests, especially if their native language is English. In India, even if you’re raised as bilingual or went to English-medium school or college, you still need to submit your TOEFL score . Some Harvard schools also require a  minimum TOEFL score from all applicants. So make sure to check that while preparing to take the test.

5. Transcripts

Harvard University admission requirements for Indian students include transcripts, marksheets or grade reports. You’ll need to submit the official transcripts from any previous schools, colleges or universities you have received a degree or credit.

To apply to Harvard College, you need to submit Secondary School Report (including transcripts) and Mid-Year School Report for College. For applying to grad schools, submit a hard copy of your college degree transcripts /attested marksheets , reflecting all the subjects you took, and your marks/grades for each semester/exam. They need to be attested by your college registrar so as to appear official/ authentic.

If your college does not issue marksheets or transcripts, submit an official letter from them listing courses and examinations taken, grades, and degrees and dates of degrees received.

If you were homeschooled, you may be required to create your own marksheets. Or get a letter from your parents/tutors about the exams taken. Or your scores from any standardized tests/exams you’ve taken.

6. Letter of Intent/ Statement of Purpose

This is one of the most important parts of Harvard University admission requirements for Indian students. Or any student for that matter. Your LoI/SoP should be 1-2 pages long and originally describe your experience, ambition, and why you’re applying to the particular program. It should basically identify why you’re the perfect candidate to be admitted, and how it will help you with your long-term passion or goal.

is harvard only for straight a students - low gpa

There can be so many tips I can give with writing a winning essay, so I’ll save those tips for another article. But do more research on your Harvard school’s admission website to see what exactly they expect from this letter. Ultimately, this letter sets you apart from other applicants, and helps to seal the deal!

Also read:  Extracurricular Activities for Harvard Applications: Make It Count!

7. Letters of Recommendation

Every Harvard school requires applicants to submit 2-3 letters of recommendation , depending on the school you’re applying to. So check your school’s admission page to see how many are required. They may even specify who these letters should ideally be from. If you have work experience, it’s typically a good idea to submit at least one letter from your employer. If you’re fresh out of college or school, a letter or two from your college dean or senior professor is a good idea. For example, Harvard College application requires two teacher evaluations.

How to Get Great Harvard Recommendation Letters

Get letters from professors or employer of authority, but those who really know about your work, so that they can give a glowing letter of recommendation. Some schools even call up and ask your recommender to verify the letter or ask further questions about you.

Not all Harvard grad schools require applicants to submit a resume. For example, Harvard Business School requires applicants to submit a business resume. Mostly, graduate schools that prefer work experience may require resumes. It may even be optional, so check on your school’s website admission requirements to cross-check.

9. Portfolio

Certain schools like Harvard Graduate School of Design require applicants of certain degree programs to submit a design portfolio. For these schools, portfolio is one of the most important Harvard University admission requirements. The portfolio requires you to visually represent your scholarly, academic and/or professional work . Here are the requirements specified on the GSD website for portfolio:

Pages: 30 max (Cover pages or table of contents don’t count) File Size: 40MB max Page Layout: 12” x 18” or A3, two-page spreads should be combined into one page (recommended). Color Format: RGB (recommended). Resolution: 150 dpi (recommended).

Be sure to check the updated requirements at the time of your application before you put together the portfolio. It needs to be submitted digitally, and may even be accompanied with a video portfolio.

10. Interview

Harvard College and some grad schools allow applicant interviews. Not all Harvard schools recommend interviews as a part of the admission process. So this is something that you want to check on the school’s admission page. Sometimes, the school you applied to may also inform applicants via telephone that an interview is necessary to finally judge their application. But that didn’t happen in my case.

How to Ensure Harvard Recommendation Letters are Submitted on Time

For example, Harvard Business School (HBS) invites applicants for 30-minute interviews. If they are invited, they have to participate, either in person or on Skype.

So I hope I was able to clarify all Harvard University admission requirements for Indian students. The admission process for Harvard is pretty standard compared to other universities in the US. So if you’re applying to other unis, you won’t find Harvard application specifically a hassle.

If you have any more questions regarding the admission process of your particular school, comment below. I’ll try to answer that here or write a separate post.

All the best!

Funding & Scholarship: Graduate Programs

Financial support for ph.d. students, all students admitted into our ph.d. program receive full financial support., this support includes tuition, fees, $1,000 in transportation and dental subsidies (as of ay24-25), and a cost-of-living stipend ($3655 per month in ay23-24 and $4083 per month before taxes in ay24-25)..

Support is independent of need provided a student remains in good academic standing and is making satisfactory progress towards his/her Ph.D. degree. Students are expected to complete their Ph.D. requirements in four to six years. Financial support takes several forms: fellowships, teaching fellowships, and research assistantships. Ordinarily, first-year Ph.D. students are supported with full fellowships so that they can devote their time to coursework.

For the class entering in Fall 2024 : SEAS PhD students are expected to complete two sections of teaching in SEAS in their second year or spread across their second and third years. Both sections may be completed concurrently in a single course. Their research assistantship will be adjusted accordingly during the semester(s) in which they are teaching fellow (TF). The academic requirement for the PhD degree is one section of teaching in SEAS. The student and their research advisor may arrange to replace the second section of teaching with a research assistantship. Beyond the first year, when students are in a better position to teach and assist in research, support is ordinarily provided through research assistantships, or a combination of a teaching fellowship and a research assistantship. For more detailed information, please visit the following pages: GSAS Tuition and Fees  G SAS Financial Support for PhD Students

External financial support for Ph.D. students

Applicants and current students are encouraged and expected to apply for all non-Harvard scholarships for which they are eligible, especially those offered by the  National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship Program  and  National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship (NDSEG) .

Each year, many SEAS students secure fellowships from external agencies.  Should an incoming student be awarded and accept any fellowship external to Harvard, it is the expectation that the student will utilize these funds in the first year of study in place of Harvard funding.   In advanced (G2+) years in the graduate program, students with external fellowships are advised to have a discussion with their financial aid officers from Harvard Griffin GSAS and SEAS about how to best utilize the remaining years of funding based on their activities and academic requirements.

To ensure equitable treatment of all students, the coordination of external award benefits with a student’s existing funding package is determined by the Harvard Griffin GSAS financial aid officer in consultation with SEAS.

PhD students with external support are eligible for a SEAS-sponsored academic incentive.  PhD students who bring in open, competitive external fellowships that are equal to 50% or more of total their support (tuition/fees + stipend) will receive a supplemental award of $3,000 in the first year of the external fellowship.  PhD students who bring in open external competitive external fellowships that are not 50% or more of their total support and are at least $10,000 (tuition/fees + stipend or salary) will receive a supplemental award of $1,000.  The full $3,000 bonus may also be awarded in certain cases of multi-year fellowships depending on the total amount of support provided.

Financial support for terminal masters students (M.E. & S.M.)

While financial aid is not available for master’s students in our M.E. and S.M. programs, there are a variety of funding opportunities available. Prospective students are encouraged to apply for independent grants and fellowships to fund their studies.  Information about tuition and fees can be found here . Students in our Computational Science & Engineering or Data Science programs-should visit this page and also may contact the  GSAS Financial Aid Office  to learn more.

Students in the  MS/MBA:Engineering Sciences program  are eligible to apply for need-based  HBS Fellowships  and student loans in both years of the program.

Harvard has several PhD programs that may also be of interest to students considering applying to the PhD program in economics. These include Business Economics, Political Economy and Government, Public Policy, and Health Policy.  Many students in these programs have considerable overlap in their coursework with courses offered to PhD students in economics.   Many also have dissertation committees that include faculty members of the economics department. Please refer to the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences for applicable program deadlines.  (Deadlines have already passed for some programs this year but not for others.) We encourage those with interest in any of those programs to also apply to those programs. The economics department will make admissions decisions independently, so application to or admission to other programs will not adversely affect admissions decisions within the Economics department. If you opt to apply, please note, the Graduate School will not accept more than three applications from any individual during the course of his or her academic career.

Application Assistance and Mentoring Program

Many students interested in an economics PhD experience disparate degrees of support in the application process. The Application Assistance and Mentoring Program (AAMP) aims to mitigate these gaps by helping students from underrepresented groups connect with a graduate student mentor in MIT or Harvard’s PhD economics programs. These mentors can provide:

• Advice on graduate school and fellowship applications, including questions about the application process and feedback on application materials.

• Information about economics research, life as a PhD student or in an academic career, for students who are deciding whether a PhD in economics is the right choice for them.

The AAMP aims to increase the pipeline of diverse talent in economics PhD programs and welcomes participation from all groups underrepresented in economics, including but not limited to: Black, Hispanic-Latinx, Native American, low-income, and LGBTQ+ students, women, students with disabilities, and students who are the first in their families to go to college. The AAMP welcomes participation among students at various stages of their economics studies, including undergraduates and college graduates. The AAMP is open to students who are curious about the academic economics experience and interested in figuring out if it’s right for them.

Interested participants should fill out the application linked below. We will accept applications until July 17th, 2023. Mentorship will begin over the summer and continue through Fall 2023. Mentees who prefer to meet for a single “coffee chat” may indicate their preference on the form. We will do our best to match all interested applicants with a mentor; however, demand may exceed the availability of mentors.

Please note that the MIT / Harvard Economics AAMP is a volunteer-based, student-run program. This program is not considered part of the admissions process for the Economics PhD at MIT or Harvard, nor will any student's participation in the AAMP be considered by the Graduate Admissions Committee at either school.

Please direct any questions to [email protected] . To join the program, please click the link below to fill out the form.

how to do phd in harvard university for indian students

Harvard University provides financial aid to those students who require it. It is made available to those students who qualify for financial aid. The entire process includes calculating parental contributions along with factoring in student employment opportunities and outside awards.

Based on the outcomes, the remaining needs will be covered by scholarships that are grants-based – meaning they don’t ever have to be repaid!

Financial aid at Harvard University is a combination of scholarships, student employment opportunities, and awards that are availed from outside sources. If students qualify for financial aid at the university, a personalized aid package is created using various resources to address the needs of each applicant.

Harvard University has one of the largest endowments among global universities and provides financial support to those students that require aid or cannot afford to pay for tuition. 55% of students who study at Harvard receive a need-based scholarship. This means that 1 in 5 students study for free at Harvard University.

Scholarships that are awarded to students by external agencies outside of Harvard come in the form of secondary schools, civic organizations, parental employers, corporations, and others. This is also factored into the financial aid package.

Harvard Student Loans are available for those students receiving some amount of Grant Aid. The limit to the amount one can borrow is calculated based on the applicant’s standing in class and based on the “Student Contribution”.

Alternatives to loans include outside awards and term-time work. The student employment office is responsible for helping students to find employment during the period of their studies. Harvard’s student accounts office helps students to manage their expenses by allowing them to pay the semester charges over four installments.

Contacting the financial aid office in case you are a currently enrolled student can help you find answers related to various questions about the Harvard Loans or Federal Direct Loans (which are available only to US citizens). Harvard has a wide variety of funding sources for student and faculty research as well.

How to Get Admission in Harvard University from India?

Although Indian students form a considerable percentage of applicants at various universities, only a tiny percentage of them get accepted into Harvard, Stanford, Cambridge, and the like. This could be because of a number of factors including the pressure of applying to an Ivy League school, lack of preparation or research, or even applying for unsuitable programmes.

how to do phd in harvard university for indian students

Getting into Harvard is a tough task and is unsettling even for the most ambitious and academically gifted students. But with the right set of resources, you too can apply to Harvard and get accepted into the prestigious university. Let’s take a look at some of the most common tips that applicants receive when they are applying to one of the programs at Harvard.

  • Examine your needs – One must research the university diligently and understand the various programs that are offered by the different schools. Once one selects a program that suits your requirements, one must go through the eligibility criteria to check if one fits the bill.
  • Understand the application process – This is an extremely important process that most people underestimate. Based on the requirements of the program one must begin working on their profile and create the necessary documents.
  • Begin early – Your entire process of preparation must be begun well ahead of time in order to get accepted into a program of your choice. This includes improving your academic records, preparing for standardized tests, undertaking mock tests, and participating in discussions that can help in understanding the requirements of Harvard.
  • Be more than what you are – Getting accepted into Harvard means that you must be more than just good at academics. Involvement in extracurricular activities beyond academics, working on building your profile from the ground up through work experience, volunteering, and other activities is of utmost importance.
  • Participate in student groups – Be a part of student groups that discuss the activities of Harvard University and its related affairs. You could also talk to the experts at TC Global to understand more about the programs of your choice and how you could go about applying to the school that offers the programs.

The admission officers look for things that most of us tend to overlook so don’t focus on portraying a false image of yourself or paint a picture that isn’t your true reflection.

All students are considered in the same pool for all places in the incoming class, regardless of citizenship or the secondary school they attend. The application requirements are the same for all applicants whether a student attends high school inside or outside the U.S.

First party cookies are the cookies served by the owner of the domain. In our case, that's TC Global. Any cookie we place ourselves is a "first-party cookie."

Third-party cookies are cookies placed on our domains by trusted partners that we've allowed to do so. These can be social media partners, advertising partners, security providers, and more. And they can be either "session cookies" or "permanent cookies":

Session cookies only exist until you close your browser, ending what's called your "session." Then they're deleted.

Permanent cookies have a range of lifespans and stay on your device after the browser is closed. On the Site, we try to only serve permanent cookies (or allow permanent cookies to be served by third parties) that have a limited lifespan. However, for security reasons or in other exceptional circumstances, sometimes we may need to give a cookie a longer lifespan.

Web browser cookies may store info such as your IP address or other identifiers, your browser type, and info about the content you view and interact with on digital services. By storing this info, web browser cookies can remember your preferences and settings for online services and analyze how you use them.

Along with cookies, we also use tracking technologies that are very similar. Our Site may contain small transparent image files or lines of code that record how you interact with them. These include "web beacons," "scripts," "tracking URLs," or "software development kits" (known as SDKs):

Web beacons have a lot of different names. They might also be known as web bugs, tracking bugs, tags, web tags, page tags, tracking pixels, pixel tags, 1x1 GIFs, or clear GIFs. In short, these beacons are a tiny graphic image of just one pixel that can be delivered to your device as part of a web page request, in an app, an advertisement, or an HTML email message. They can be used to retrieve info from your device, such as your device type, operating system, IP address, and the time of your visit. They are also used to serve and read cookies in your browser or to trigger the placement of a cookie.

Scripts are small computer programs embedded within our web pages that give those pages a wide variety of extra functionality. Scripts make it possible for the website to function properly. For example, scripts power certain security features and enable basic interactive features on our website. Scripts can also be used for analytical or advertising purposes. For example, a script can collect info about how you use our website, such as which pages you visit or what you search for.

Tracking URLs are links with a unique identifier in them. These are used to track which website brought you to the Site. An example woold be if you clicked from a social media page, search engine, or one of our affiliate partners' websites.

Software Development Kits (SDKs) are part of our apps' source code. Unlike browser cookies, SDK data is stored in the app storage. They're used to analyze how the apps are being used or to send personalized push notifications. To do this, they record unique identifiers associated with your device, like your device ID, IP address, in-app activity, and network location.

All these tracking technologies are referred to as "cookies" here in this Cookie Statement. However, no Personal Information identifying the user is collected nor any data capture mechanisms are employed. The user may change browser settings to accept or reject cookies on personal preference. You have the ability to accept or decline cookies. Most web browsers automatically accept cookies, but you can usually modify the browser setting to decline cookies if you so prefer. If you choose to decline cookies, you may not be able to sign in or use other interactive features of the Site that may depend on cookies. If you choose to accept cookies, you also have the ability to later delete cookies that you have accepted. If you choose to delete cookies, any settings and preferences controlled by those cookies, including advertising preferences, will be deleted and may need to be recreated. We process and keep all data for our own use and, if you wish to opt-out from tracking by TC Global you can do so at [email protected]

A good academic record: The minimum academic qualification for PhD programs in the USA is a full-time master’s degree. Applicants need to have exceptional academic grades in undergraduate and postgraduate courses. The requirement of marks will vary from one university to another, depending upon the rank and specialization.

Work experience: Academic projects, internships, and training records are important for PhD aspirants. Applicants with industry exposure and work experience are usually given preference. You will need to show your work experience certificates during admission.

The list includes transcripts, application form, fee payment slip, letter of recommendation, visa, passport, internship documents, statement of purpose, and a detailed curriculum vitae.

English language proficiency test: To get admission into PhD courses, the American education system and immigration services need a valid English language proficiency test score. The non-native English-speaking students need to take an IELTS or TOEFL examination to prove their English language skills.

Statement of Purpose: A Statement of purpose (SOP) is an important document required by the admissions committee to filter applicants. It reflects the purpose and goals of a PhD student in a unique manner. There are chances that many students may have the same degrees and scores, but the SOP will be unique for all.

Letter of Recommendation: Letter of recommendation (LOR) is an independent assessment of the applicant’s potential. Universities require a minimum of two letters of recommendation.

Standardized test scores: Apart from the English language proficiency test, applicants need to take other standardized entrance examinations for PhD programs. GRE or GMAT scores are important to pursue PhD programs in the USA.

Fully-Funded PhD Program at Harvard University: How I Got In

Fully-Funded PhD Program at Harvard University

Harvard is one of those places that people often talk about with admiration but rarely as an aspiration. “Could I ever get into Harvard?” is usually a question asked with a great deal of doubt and trepidation. However, thousands have graduated from Harvard over its lengthy and illustrious history, and those people are real people. They simply had two traits that made them eligible candidates, and the rest was up to chance! Those traits were: (a) an impressive portfolio (including high grades and varied and committed experiences, including leadership roles , etc.) and (b) confidence that they could indeed be accepted. This latter element is perhaps the defining feature of students accepted to Harvard—the belief that they could ever get in!

Harvard (or other Ivy schools) aren’t for everyone all the time

Let’s be clear: we are not all, always, ready to go to Harvard, just because we believe in ourselves. I applied to Harvard in high school and was rejected—and the truth is, though I was a committed and intellectually curious student, and though I feel I would have thrived at Harvard, I know I didn’t have the portfolio they needed. My grades were good, but not stellar ; my extracurriculars and summer experiences existed, but were not extensive or impressive; and, my confidence led me to seek very little advice or writing consulting for my personal statement , so that I did not submit my best possible work.

Thinking you can’t get in at one point in your life might be true, but it does not mean you are not “Harvard/Ivy League material” ever . After completing college at a marvelous liberal arts university (an experience I would choose again any day!), I knew my portfolio had changed. I had very good grades and had fostered deep and lasting connections with professors; I had been a research assistant, a student newspaper writer and editor, and a writing tutor; I had learned a tremendous amount and felt confident that I could submit a writing sample I was proud of.

This time, in addition to the necessary confidence and portfolio, I sought a writing tutor to help make sure my statement of purpose could be the best one possible, and off my application went! Lo and behold, I got into my dream school for an MA: the University of Chicago, or the “Harvard of the Midwest.” Not only that, but I unexpectedly was awarded a fully-funded fellowship , including full tuition coverage AND a stipend! You never know what can happen!

The importance of strong essays

During the last year of my MA, I again felt ready to submit applications to competitive schools; I’d kept up my grades and activities, I’d worked hard on a polished writing sample, and I made sure to consult with others about the quality of my statement of purpose; my years as a college writing tutor had taught me that we all need editors, from the least to most experienced writers. All of that, plus a big dose of luck, won me a place in a fully-funded PhD program at Harvard, where I am currently working on my dissertation (when I’m not advising Accepted’s clients ). So remember: confidence, a great portfolio, and assistance with one’s writing—these are the three things in your power; the rest is up to the big H!

I want to add one last thought: When applying to MA and PhD programs (as opposed to undergraduate programs), there is an additional key to a positive portfolio: demonstrating interest in the work of particular scholars with whom you’d like to work. This means two things:

  • Tailoring your statement of purpose to each school and its specific faculty members,
  • Reaching out directly to these scholars in order to express interest in their work. Ask to schedule a phone call and/or an in-person meeting. There’s no better way to make yourself stand out than to make yourself known in person.

Remember: if you don’t do this, you are an anonymous paper application swimming in a sea of similarly anonymous applications. If you were on the admissions end, wouldn’t you feel much better accepting a student you’ve had extensive contact with, have possibly even met, who made a good impression?

Your Ivy League checklist for admissions success

So, to sum up, here is your checklist for preparing to apply to Ivy League school PhD programs, including Harvard:

  • Honestly assess your own transcript: Are you seeing that the vast majority of your grades are A and A-? Is your GPA at the end of college a 3.7 or above? If you’ve answered YES to both of these questions, you might be a good candidate.
  • Consider your overall profile: What does it look like? (I’ll address how one constructs a great CV in another post.) Have you been involved in a sustained way (i.e., for a year or more) in multiple activities? Have you assumed leadership roles in some of these? Have you demonstrated commitments to these pursuits? If so, you might be a good candidate!
  • Think long and hard about your recommenders : Have you built sustained relationships with your previous teachers/professors? If you apply for a graduate degree, make sure your recommenders are known figures in your field, who know you well and can write from personal experience teaching or supervising you. Their credibility will build confidence in your application.
  • Have confidence! If you don’t believe you can get accepted, you very well might not. Confidence (to be clear, I do not mean arrogance!) shines through a good application.

I’ll write more in an upcoming blogpost about how specifically to approach potential advisors and other faculty members during the admissions process. But for now, good luck!

When do I need to submit test scores if I want them considered in my application?

If you are applying Restrictive Early Action, we would like your testing results by the end of October; however, you may submit the November series if needed.

Do I need to complete an alumni interview for my first-year application?

Applicants are assigned interviews at the discretion of the Admissions Committee, based, in part, on availability of alumni in your local area. Your application is considered complete without an interview and will receive a full and thorough evaluation. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q. does harvard give scholarships to indian students.

Ans. Harvard offers financial aid to Indian students regardless of need through scholarships like the need-based Dean’s REACH Award at Harvard Medical School and the merit-based Horace W. Goldsmith Fellowship for undergraduates. So, academic excellence and financial need are key for scholarships at Harvard.

Q. What is the Harvard University tuition fee?

Ans. In the 2023-2024 school year, Harvard University charged $57,261 for tuition if you wanted to go to classes there. But remember, that’s just for classes. If you live there, you’ll need more money for things like housing and food. On average, that added up to about $32,474 for the whole year. These costs can change, so it’s best to look at Harvard’s website for the newest prices.

Q. How is the scholarship requirement determined at Harvard?

Ans. The Harvard University scholarship is determined on the basis of the yearly family income and not on one’s merit. The financial aid officials work in close collaboration with the students’ families to find out how much they can contribute from their side and how much they would require in aid.  In some cases, the families have to pay about 10% of the tuition fees, while some families might qualify for a fully-sponsored study program. Students might also have to contribute through term-time work or summer-time employment. Term-time work constitutes about 10-12 hours of work every week.

Q. Is there a GMAT/GRE wavier for Harvard?

Ans. Harvard Business School does not offer MBA applicants a GMAT or GRE waiver. You must submit results from at least one of these exams. Furthermore, at the time of your application, the scores shouldn’t be older than five years. Q. Who is eligible for the Harvard scholarship?

Ans. Scholarship Aid is entirely need-based and takes into account a number of variables, including the size, income, assets, and unusual expenses of your family. We don’t have preferential packaging policies or merit-based awards that make certain students’ prizes more appealing than others.

Q. Who gets free tuition at Harvard?

Ans. The cost of Harvard depends on your family’s budget. You won’t have to pay anything if your family makes less than $85,000 annually. The expected contribution ranges from 0% to 10% of your yearly income for families making between $85,000 and $150,000.

Q. What is the cost of living in Harvard?

Ans. A single scholar attending Harvard for a year ought to have about $30,000 set aside for living expenses. Several academics have discovered that, depending on their unique situations and lifestyles, their real living expenses are significantly higher.

Q. How to get into Harvard from India with scholarship?

Ans. To get into Harvard from India with a scholarship, aim for top grades, participate in activities that showcase your leadership skills, and do well on tests like the SAT or ACT. Write great essays that highlight your strengths, and apply for scholarships available to international students. Seek advice from counsellors or alumni who’ve done it before—they can offer valuable insights!

Q. Can I apply to Harvard after my 12th?

“ How can I get into Harvard for undergraduate “, “ can I get into Harvard from India after 12th “, “ what does Harvard look for in international applicants ” – we get these questions pretty often.

Firstly, why single out Harvard when we’ve already written a post on what top colleges look for in applications ?

Well, the simple answer is – because it’s Harvard!

There are many posts around this topic from a general perspective. Here we have tried to answer this question from an Indian applicant’s perspective.

With a thin acceptance rate of around 5%, not every student gets a chance to be at Harvard. Thousands of high school students apply to Harvard every year. Out of which those who are capable, qualified, and stand out are selected by the admission committee. The application process is influenced by your previous record, leadership potential, future goals, and what you have to offer to the Harvard community.

Committed to Liberal arts and sciences, Harvard offers more than 46 undergraduate majors across vast fields to its students. Read best courses to study at Harvard .

There is no accurate roadmap that guarantees your entry into Harvard but having a better perspective and knowledge can help you step up your chances of selection.

In this post, we will give you a perspective of both the application process (along with application requirements) and an overall view of how to get into Harvard.

Before moving on to the how-to part, let’s tackle some of the pre-application questions about Harvard College (University).

How to apply to Harvard University from India after 12th?

Here are Harvard University Admission Requirements for Indian Students.

Online Application:

The digital or online application is the first thing to submit. Once they formally receive your duly filled-in online application form, only then the admission committee will review other application materials like transcripts, test scores, essays, etc. Harvard accepts the  Common Application (Common App) , the  Universal College Application , and the  Coalition Application . You can apply to Harvard using any of those application portals. Read more about Harvard’s application requirements .

Application Fees: The online application has to be submitted with the application fee, which is $75. You can check the application fee on your school’s (department’s) website.

School Reports and Teacher Recommendations:

Midyear school report (grades from class 9 – 11).

When you apply, your school counselor will often send your transcript with few or no senior year course grades included. That is why the midyear school report is required – to allow the admission committee to review your performance in the first half of your Grade 11 coursework .  The midyear school report must be completed by your school counselor or other school officials.

Teacher Evaluations

Usually, you need to submit  2 letters of recommendation . If you wish to submit additional letters of recommendation, you can do so after you submit your application. In your application confirmation email, there will be a personalized link to send to your recommenders.

Final School Report and Transcripts

  • All admitted students who choose to enroll are required to send a Final School Report and transcript as soon as their final grades (Class 12 results) become available – no later than July 1.
  • The Final School Report and transcript should be completed and sent by a school counselor or other school official through Parchment/Docufide or Scrip-Safe International if your school has access to these submission options.
  • IB students should send their final results as soon as they are released in mid-July. We will expect to see final A levels results by mid-August.

Standardized Test Scores:

  • Harvard College requires standardized test scores from either the SAT or ACT (with or without writing). They even recommend submitting two SAT subject tests, neither of which may be the SAT II English Language Proficiency Test (ELPT).
  • All international students, including Indians, are required to take the standardized English language tests, especially if their native language is English. In India, even if you’re raised as bilingual or went to an English-medium school,  you still need to submit your TOEFL score . Some Harvard schools also require a  minimum TOEFL score  from all applicants. So make sure to check that while preparing to take the test.

Supplemental Materials:

Personal statement / essays –.

This is one of the most important components of Harvard University admission requirements for Indian students. Or any student for that matter. Your essay should describe your experience, ambition, and why you’re applying to the particular program. It should basically identify why you’re the perfect candidate to be admitted, and how it will help you with your long-term passion or goal.

Resume –

Not all Harvard grad schools require applicants to submit a resume. For example, Harvard Business School requires applicants to submit a business resume. Mostly, graduate schools that prefer work experience may require resumes. It may even be optional, so check on your school’s website admission requirements to cross-check.

Portfolio –

Certain schools like Harvard Graduate School of Design require applicants of certain degree programs to submit a design portfolio. For these schools, the portfolio is one of the most important Harvard University admission requirements. The portfolio requires you to visually represent  your scholarly, academic and/or professional work .

Additional/Supporting Materials –

At the discretion of the Admissions Committee, supplementary materials—such as music recordings, artwork, or selected samples of academic work—may be evaluated by faculty. These materials are entirely optional.

  • Not all Harvard schools recommend interviews as a part of the admission process. So this is something that you want to check on the school’s admission page. Sometimes, the school you applied to may also inform applicants via telephone/Skype/Zoom that an interview is necessary to finally judge their application.
  • About 10,000 alumni help Harvard University scroll through thousands of applications. You should prepare for the interview as it plays a significant role in the college admissions committee’s final decision.

How to Get into Harvard Medical School after 12th

You wouldn’t go to Harvard Medical School for undergrad. You could complete a bachelor’s degree at Harvard College in a discipline of your choosing, assuming you met the admission qualifications. Roughly, only 5-6% of those who apply are admitted.

How to Get into Harvard from India (for Undergrad)

Maintain a high gpa (grades).

US universities follow the approach of holistic profile evaluation. Though near-perfect grades won’t guarantee you a Harvard admit, having excellent grades will keep you in the running for admissions to the college.

Most Harvard applicants fall within the top 10-15% of their class, so you should aim to be within this range to be seriously considered. If your GPA is well below this range, the other parts of your application will have to be incredibly impressive to make up for it.

  • Try to take honors/AP courses; if they are being provided by your school
  • Opt for the most challenging course load you can handle as the rigor of course matters a lot
  • You should demonstrate excellence in  all  of your academic subjects. Though you can be stronger in some subjects and weaker than others, you should be an exceptional student in almost every class.
  • Don’t be discouraged if your GPA isn’t  quite  as high as you wanted it to be. If your grades have improved from your freshman year until the time you apply, officers will be impressed, and if there was a dip in your grades because of a personal situation, you can explain it in your essay.

Get High Scores in SAT/ACT, SAT Subject Tests, and AP Exams

Doing extremely well on your  SAT or ACT and AP exams will show admissions officers that you are a hard worker with stellar academic achievements. Just like having a perfect GPA won’t make you a shoo-in, a high SAT score and strong AP test results won’t guarantee you a spot in Harvard, but it will keep admissions officers interested in your application.

  • Don’t be worried if your school doesn’t offer a ton of AP tests. Not every school offers 20 different AP tests, and the admissions officers will know if your high school does not. Just try to do well on the tests that your school does offer. Another option could be to take AP courses online.
  • Make sure to take your tests at the right time. If you want to impress Harvard with your SAT score, you’ll have to take it well before the application is due. Take the test during your junior year to give yourself enough time to retake it if it’s necessary.
  • Check Harvard’s requirements for the last possible test date for the ACT or SAT. It’s always just a week or a few weeks after the application due date, but you should already have an excellent score when you apply.
  • Harvard also requires you to take two SAT II tests.
  • Don’t forget to have your score reports sent directly to the Harvard admissions office.

Demonstrate a Positive Attitude towards Learning through Coursework

Depending on your intended area of major, try out the following:

  • If you are interested in STEM, participate in relevant research projects, clubs, and summer school programs .
  • India is a STEM-crazy nation. So, I am sure, a lot of folks would be interested to know how to get admission to Harvard University from India after 12th for engineering. If you want to be an engineer, better to have rigorous coursework in Math, Physics, etc., and you better be holding good grades in high school or improving them over time.
  • Get an internship at a place that relates to your interests.
  • If you like biological science, try to get work in a lab.
  • Get a job and work hard. Admissions are often impressed at students who take the initiative to pay their own way into college rather than relying on their parents to cover the exorbitant costs.

Pursue Impressive Extracurricular Activities

Demonstrate excellence through your participation in a club, activity or sports that you are interested in.

  • Though your grades and scores will prove that you are capable of academic excellence, your extracurricular activities will make you stand out as a unique individual who is invested in pursuing his interests.
  • You don’t need to participate in 10-15 different activities and sports. Finding two or three clubs you’re interested in and making an effort to excel in those areas and even reaching a leadership role will show that you are a dedicated, well-rounded individual.
  • Harvard will not care how many things you participate in. Rather they want to see excellence and deep dedication in one or two fields you are passionate about. It’s all about quality over quantity.
  • Some people who excel at a certain subject, also compete in various competitions. Interested in science? Try out for competitions like Science Olympiad, Quiz Bowl, or others available in your school. Harvard wants students that stand out, so having a few competitions under your belt, even with participation, is a good boost for anyone.

Focus on Leadership

Become a leader. Harvard is always looking for future leaders and brand ambassadors for their college. Here are a few tips to demonstrate your leadership skills:

  • It’s okay if you are not the President or Secretary. In most clubs, you’ll have to work your way up from a smaller leadership role to the head role.
  • The admission committee doesn’t expect you to solve the Middle-East crisis or global pandemic issue. Even you can demonstrate a passion for solving key problems in your local neighborhood or community, that’s good enough.
  • If you like politics or debating, join the Model United Nations team or debate team. If you love languages, join the French or Spanish club.
  • Start your commitment as early as Grade 8 or 9. You should join clubs and other activities early on so you can show a record of dedication and commitment.

Demonstrate Spike in Sports or Band

Similarly, try to be be good (or great) at one or two sports or stand out by joining a band.

  • You don’t have to be an Olympic athlete, national/state-level player, or a world-class musician to get into Harvard. Participating in a sport or joining the school band will make you stand out.
  • Though clubs can be time-consuming, taking a sport or playing an instrument requires you to practice or compete almost every day after school so it shows a deep level of dedication.
  • If you join a sport, try to work up to a leadership position. Remember that you don’t often have to be the best athlete to be the team captain. You have to be the most dedicated or most well-liked.
  • Remember that while many sports require ten or more hours of commitment a week, you can also do a sport for just one or two of the three sports seasons. For example, you can run cross country in the fall, but take the winter off to focus on your studies and clubs, and then run spring track the next season.
  • If you play an instrument, you should also strive to gain a leadership position in your team’s band. Quite a few colleges look at musical excellence.

Involve in Community Work and Make Social Impact

Volunteering in your community is a great way to show your generosity, empathy, and your kindness. It is also a great way to impress admissions officers. There are countless ways to volunteer in your community, whether you’re doing it through your school’s Key Club, or finding opportunities through your local youth center or nearby charities. Here are some great things to do:

  • Volunteer to help children learn to read in your local library.
  • Work with an NGO to solve social issues.
  • Teach underprivileged children in your local community
  • Spend time in old age or veteran’s home in your area.
  • Volunteer in a local homeless shelter or soup kitchen.
  • Take the initiative to clean up your local park.

Read Why is Community Service so Important for College Admissions?

Provide Personalized Recommendations

After your coursework, letters of recommendation (LORs) play a very important component in your application. But note that generic LORs do not help as every application with a LOR has it. Get the LOR from teachers or others who know you well and can speak more closely about your values, performance, and who you are as a person.

Harvard requires you to submit two teacher evaluations to give more insight into your performance in the classroom. Pick two teachers who know you well and have a unique perspective on your strengths in your classroom and your character.

  • A teacher can describe your excellence in his or her classroom, as well as your contributions to the class discussion.
  • Choose a teacher who has really seen you at your academic best. If your teacher is also your athletic coach or club leader, s/he can add even more dimension to the recommendation.
  • Pick two teachers from two different subjects. Otherwise, it may look like you only excel in one subject.
  • Approach someone who you know will write a knockout recommendation. Ask older students if they recommend a certain teacher, or if there’s a teacher who has a reputation of being late with the recommendations or not writing anything too specific.
  • You should not only pick a teacher or person who has a close connection to you but someone who you know will write something detailed and positive.

Tell a Compelling Story through the Essays

Most of the colleges want to know more about the student before admitting them. They use LORs to get to know you from others, but  college essays  are a great way for them to know more about “You”, your aspirations, your dreams, your values, and what has shaped you to become what or who you are today.

Your essay should do two main things: it should show the admissions officers what an original, interesting, and driven person you are, and that you have top-notch writing skills.

You should take the time to write an essay that is meaningful to you and leave enough time for yourself to proofread it when you’re finished. You can find the guidelines for the essay on the last page of the application. It should be 250-500 words long. Here are a few tips:

Harvard Essay Tips

  • Be original. Write something that only you could write. Show what makes you special.
  • Show your strong character. Tell a story that demonstrates your persistence, work ethic, creativity, or even your ability to learn from your mistakes.
  • Be compelling. Hook the admissions officers from your opening line, and keep their interests with your lively language, varied sentences, and engaging topic.
  • Be concise. Don’t go over the word limit. Admissions officers will be reading thousands of essays, and they won’t appreciate it if you can’t follow directions.
  • Some popular admissions essay topics include writing about your achievements in a club or a sport, describing your family and background, or writing about a life-changing experience.
  • Get feedback. Run your essay by a trusted friend or family member and your English teacher, if you can. They can help you catch grammar mistakes, and they can also tell whether your essay had its intended effect.
  • Always proofread your work. When you’re done, check your essay for grammar and punctuation mistakes. Remember that admissions officers aren’t just interested in the content of your essay, but also in how well you can write.

Total budget at harvard university, the basics of financial aid at harvard, how does harvard help students fund higher education, who is eligible, what does a typical financial aid package look like, sources of financial aid, harvard university scholarships for indian students, outside scholarships, key takeaways, introduction to top harvard scholarship for indian students.

Securing financial aid to study at Harvard is not difficult. Once you’ve been admitted, the university will work one-on-one with you to plan your education expenses. The staff can not only help you with your tuition, but also guide you on how to plan your finances, pay taxes, and find employment. Read this blog to find out how Harvard university grants scholarships for Indian students.

Your expenses for studying at Harvard university will include-

  • Tuition fee ($55,587)
  • Student services
  • Health services
  • Accommodation ($12,424)
  • Health insurance fee
  • Personal allowance ($3,500)
  • Round-trip airfare
  • The total cost of studying at Harvard University can range anywhere from $80,000 to $84,000 per year.

However, given that Harvard meets 100% of demonstrated financial needs, students find it more affordable than public universities.

harvard university scholarships for indian students

Here are a few statistics that show the efforts that Harvard takes to ensure that the university is an affordable option for students regardless of their financial background-

  • 55% of students receive need-based scholarships.
  • 2/3rd of Harvard students are employed during the academic year.
  • More than 20% of Harvard parents do not contribute towards their children’s education.
  • 19% of Harvard undergraduates are Pell Grant recipients.

As we’ve already said, Harvard works closely with you and your family to help fund your education. When you qualify for financial aid, the university uses multiple sources to create an individualized financial aid package. This package may be made up of a combination of Harvard University scholarships, student employment, and outside awards.

Here’s how it works

  • First, the university determines your parent contribution, i.e., the percentage of income your parents can contribute towards your education. For example, if your annual family income is below $75,000, your parent contribution will be zero.
  • Next, Harvard looks at any outside awards you’ve won and factors in your employment.
  • The university makes sure that your remaining needs are covered by scholarships and grants (that do not need to be repaid). These funds can be in the form of endowments, tuition revenues, federal and state grants, gifts from alumni, etc.

harvard university scholarships for indian students

Harvard’s financial aid application process is the same for national and international students.

As you apply, you will be asked to share information about-

  • Your family income and assets
  • Outside awards
  • Any change in financial circumstances

Once you’ve submitted your scholarship application, the university’s financial aid officers will work with you to determine your demonstrated need. Once they have reached a decision, you will be notified about your award for the next academic year.

If you’re a US citizen or permanent resident, you will also need to submit the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).

And if you’re an international student, you will need to obtain an I-20 and a Social Security Number to be able to receive paychecks from your employment funds at Harvard.

The average financial aid package at Harvard looks like this

  • Parent contribution – $13,050
  • Student asset contribution – $350
  • Term-time employment – $2700
  • Scholarships – $65,635

As said, these scholarships include Harvard University scholarships for Indian students, Government scholarships, and outside scholarships.

Since international students are not eligible for US federal or state grants, this blog shares a list of Harvard University scholarships for Indian students, along with the outside scholarships you can apply for.

An ordered study of a wild frontier

By Robert O'Neill

Marcos Barrozo PhD 2024 is using new data and modern methods to help understand how to protect ancient rainforests.

Marcos Barrozo PhD 2024 can’t be completely sure why—he thinks maybe it has something to do with his grandfather being a truck driver in their native Brazil during the country’s economic boom—but he has always been fascinated by how space and wealth interact. Why, he wondered, are some places richer than others, and why do some areas develop economically while others don’t?

At Middlebury College, where Barrozo learned to study in English and survive the cold Vermont winters, he also became fascinated with the study of the environment. His time at Harvard Kennedy School in the PhD in Public Policy Program allowed him to marry those two interests.

His research has focused on Brazil’s wild Amazonian frontier, where ancient rainforests are being cut down and turned into mines or pastures. Specifically, he has used the country’s meticulous tracking of cattle movements—designed to avoid outbreaks of diseases—to study the region’s vast agricultural economy, and how unregulated, often illegal cattle ranching is accelerating deforestation.

As he prepares to join the faculty at DePaul University in Chicago, we caught up with him to ask him about his studies, his experience at HKS, and his research.

When did you realize you were going down the academic route?

From my sophomore year, I knew I wanted to pursue an academic path in economics. I mean, my dad's a professor, my mom was a teacher. I tutored kids since I was 12 or so—my mom taught at a school and tutored on the side, and I started tutoring some of the “spillover” kids. My sister defended her PhD this year also. Education runs in my family.

What drew you here to HKS?

There is a long tradition of people doing environmental economics here at HKS. And I thought that being here would also give me good connections with the broader Harvard community. That was a big part of my decision.

One of my advisors is [David Wells Professor of Political Economy at Harvard University] Marc Melitz , and through him I had very close connections to the economics department and presented a lot of seminars there. [Teresa and John Heinz Professor of the Practice of Environmental Policy] Joe Aldy was the faculty member who connected me to policy. He's an environmental economist who also served in the Obama administration, so I think he embodies public service in academia very well. And he was always asking me, “What are the policy implications of this? What are the policy exercises that you can do with this? And how does this economics matter?”

And then there was [Peter Wertheim Professor of Urban Policy] Gordon Hanson . What always impressed me was the depth and breadth of his knowledge. I would meet with him and he would know stuff about the Amazon, even though he works mainly on American workers being exposed to trade shocks from China. He's just incredibly well read and always has something to say that's very conceptual, which is helpful to you as a doctoral student. He watches you present and you're struggling with how to translate the work that you're doing into one solid, clear message and he sees it right away.

What was the attraction to the PhD in Public Policy Program?

Some people see the PhD in Public Policy Program as the ugly cousin of economics. But I think we could lean a little bit into the fact that the work we do is actually relevant.

I think sometimes people just try to tinker around the edges of methodological discussions. And then I think here we are, people who care. In my class there is someone who is working on refugees in Jordan, working on urban environments’ exposure to heat shocks—just incredibly relevant things. Everybody here cares. We can lean into that a little more.

Marcos Barrozo PhD 2024 standing outside on a cold spring day.

“Some people see the PhD in Public Policy Program as the ugly cousin of economics... [But] in my class there is someone who is working on refugees in Jordan, working on urban environments’ exposure to heat shocks—just incredibly relevant things.”

Marcos barrozo phd 2024, where do you see your research going from here.

A lot of the broad insights of my work can be extended to other settings. I think if you're thinking about cobalt mining in the Democratic Republic of Congo or palm oil in Indonesia, there's a high chance that these things apply.

For the next couple of years, I’ll be laser focused on the research on Amazon deforestation. But there are a lot of other things I am interested in: How do we think about technology? How do we produce more with less land? How do you get cattle ranchers to get the cattle that they need, that we need to feed people with less land, with less effect on the forest?

You’re headed to DePaul University, where you’ll teach economics. What attracted you to that university?

They have a mission of giving access to low-income students in small classroom settings. So it's kind of halfway between a big research university and the liberal arts college, where I came from, which is really nice for me. And they have this mission of low-income access, and they also have a lot of first-generation Latinos from the Chicago community. It's a really cool place.

Interim Harvard President Alan Garber Takes the Political Battle to Washington

Harvard Corporation Rejects FAS Effort to Let 13 Pro-Palestine Student Protesters Graduate

The Harvard Corporation overruled a Faculty of Arts and Sciences vote to confer degrees on 13 seniors who were suspended or placed on probation by the Harvard College Adminsitrative Board.

The Harvard Corporation rejected an effort by the Faculty of Arts and Sciences to confer degrees on 13 seniors facing disciplinary charges for participating in the pro-Palestine encampment, an unprecedented veto that opens a new front in the internal battles that have convulsed Harvard for the past year.

The Corporation, the University’s highest governing body, deliberated late into the night on Tuesday as it stared down an impossible decision : render Harvard College’s disciplinary processes toothless by approving the FAS-amended list or undercut the authority of the University’s largest faculty by declining to uphold their amendment.

“Today, we have voted to confer 1,539 degrees to Harvard College students in good standing,” the Corporation wrote in a joint statement on Wednesday. “Because the students included as the result of Monday’s amendment are not in good standing, we cannot responsibly vote to award them degrees at this time.”

Faculty members, at the annual FAS degree meeting, plunged Harvard into something of a constitutional crisis as they voted to amend the list of degrees for conferral at Commencement during what is normally a sparsely attended pro forma session.

Instead, 115 faculty members showed up to a meeting in which a decisive majority voted to confer degrees on the 13 seniors. The students were notified of disciplinary charges from the Harvard College Administrative Board just three days earlier.

During the meeting, faculty members claimed that it had the authority to add the students back onto the list because the disciplinary actions from the Ad Board were subject to approval by the FAS — the “ultimate disciplinary body” for the College, according to the University’s governing statutes.

Whether it intended to or not, the Corporation’s statement signaled that it does not believe the FAS has the authority that some of its faculty members think it does.

This now pits many faculty members against the Corporation at a time when many stakeholders across the University have raised serious questions about the Corporation’s stewardship, accusing the board of repeated leadership failures over the past eight months.

Government professor Steven Levitsky warned in an interview on Tuesday that the Corporation could spark a faculty uprising if it does not sign off on the FAS-approved list of degrees for conferral.

“I would expect a faculty rebellion, possibly a faculty rebellion against the entire governance structure, because there’s already a fair amount of mistrust toward the Corporation to begin with,” Levitsky said.

The Corporation cited rules outlined in the Student Handbook which state that students must be in good standing in order to graduate and noted that the FAS vote on Monday only added students to the list of degrees for conferral — and did not actually overturn the disciplinary charges.

“We respect each faculty’s responsibility to determine appropriate discipline for its students,” the Corporation wrote. “Monday’s faculty vote did not, however, revisit these disciplinary rulings, did not purport to engage in the individualized assessment of each case that would ordinarily be required to do so, and, most importantly, did not claim to restore the students to good standing.”

The Corporation also wrote that siding with the FAS motion could create a double standard and disadvantage students who were not in good academic standing for issues unrelated to pro-Palestine protests on campus.

“We also considered the inequity of exempting a particular group of students who are not in good standing from established rules, while other seniors with similar status for matters unrelated to Monday’s faculty amendment would be unable to graduate,” the Corporation wrote.

The current controversy stems from the Harvard College Administrative Board’s decision on Friday to suspend five students and place more than 2o others on probation for their participation in the encampment that ended earlier this month.

The disciplinary charges were met with almost immediate condemnation from a range of students and faculty members across the University, who described the charges as an arbitrary and uncharacteristically harsh crackdown on student activism.

Many critics alleged that the disciplinary charges violated an agreement to end the encampment between interim Harvard President Alan M. Garber ’76 and the pro-Palestine student protesters.

Garber wrote in an email to encampment protesters that he would ask schools to reinstate students from involuntary leave and “encourage the administrative boards or other disciplinary bodies within the schools to address cases expeditiously under existing precedent and practice (including taking into account where relevant the voluntary decision to leave the encampment), for all students, including those students eligible thereafter to graduate so that they may do so.”

While the faculty attempted to take matters into their own hands by reinstating students, the Corporation insisted on Wednesday that the Ad Board’s appeal processes must first run their course.

“We fully support the Faculty of Arts and Sciences’ stated intention to provide expedited review, at this time, of eligible requests for reconsideration or appeal,” the Corporation wrote. “We will consider conferral of degrees promptly if, following the completion of all FAS processes, a student becomes eligible to receive a degree.”

Harvard Corporation Rules Thirteen Students Cannot Graduate

Faculty of arts and sciences may 20 vote on protestors’ status does not confer “good standing.”.

Harvard shield on red background

On Monday, during the Faculty of Arts and Sciences’ meeting on students’ eligibility to receive their degrees, members voted that 13 students found by the College’s Administrative Board to have violated University policies during their pro-Palestinian encampment in Harvard Yard should be included on the list of those eligible [ Corrected 4:58 p.m. : a previous version of this story incorrectly said the faculty voted that those students were in “good standing”]. That meant that the faculty voted the students should receive their degrees at the 373 rd Commencement tomorrow—an action, overruling the Administrative Board, that transferred the final decision to the Harvard Corporation. The President and Fellows (the Corporation) are ultimately responsible for conferring degrees.

The Administrative Board ruling spurred new protests by the students’ supporters, including a weekend march to interim president Alan M. Garber’s home, and furious, dueling editorials and op-eds in the Crimson . Advocates of the students cite prior protest encampments, in which the University did not impose similar discipline; their critics cite the violation of Harvard rules on protests, and reports of harassing or intimidating behavior toward others during the encampment.

In a statement released this afternoon, the Corporation said that since the students are not in good standing, they therefore will not receive their degrees at Commencement. That may further fuel possible attempts during the morning exercises to protest both the Israel-Gaza war itself and the University’s response to the encampment and other campus actions. The Corporation’s statement follows:

In accordance with the University statutes, the President and Fellows of Harvard College are responsible for conferring degrees on students who have fulfilled degree requirements and are in good standing.

Degree candidates are recommended to the President and Fellows, collectively known as the Harvard Corporation, by the faculties at Harvard’s schools. On Monday, faculty members who attended a Faculty of Arts and Sciences meeting amended the list of candidates provided by the FAS Registrar, who certifies that students have met the requirements and are in good standing. The faculty amendment added to the list of recommended Harvard College degree recipients thirteen students who are not in good standing.

Each of these students has been found by the College’s Administrative Board — the body established by the FAS faculty to investigate and adjudicate disciplinary matters—to have violated the University’s policies by their conduct during their participation in the recent encampment in Harvard Yard. We respect each faculty’s responsibility to determine appropriate discipline for its students. Monday’s faculty vote did not, however, revisit these disciplinary rulings, did not purport to engage in the individualized assessment of each case that would ordinarily be required to do so, and, most importantly, did not claim to restore the students to good standing.

Today, we have voted to confer 7,782 degrees to students in good standing. Because the students included as the result of Monday’s amendment are not in good standing, we cannot responsibly vote to award them degrees at this time. In coming to this determination, we note that the express provisions of the Harvard College Student Handbook state that students who are not in good standing are not eligible for degrees. We also considered the inequity of exempting a particular group of students who are not in good standing from established rules, while other seniors with similar status for matters unrelated to Monday’s faculty amendment would be unable to graduate.

We understand that the inability to graduate is consequential for students and their families. We fully support the Faculty of Arts and Sciences’ stated intention to provide expedited review, at this time, of eligible requests for reconsideration or appeal. We will consider conferral of degrees promptly if, following the completion of all FAS processes, a student becomes eligible to receive a degree.

We care deeply about every member of our community—students, faculty, staff, researchers, and alumni—and we have chosen a path forward that accords with our responsibilities and reaffirms a process for our students to receive prompt and fair review.

—The President and Fellows of Harvard College

  • Hundreds of Harvard graduates walk out of commencement after weeks of protests

CAMBRIDGE, MASS. (WHDH) - Hundreds of Harvard graduates walked out of the university’s commencement ceremony Thursday, sending a defiant message after weeks of protests and a decision by the Harvard Corporation not to give degrees to 13 seniors who participated in the recent pro-Palestinian encampment in Harvard Yard.

Commencement participants gathered early Thursday morning and formal ceremonies began near 9:30 a.m. The walkout happened near 11 a.m. while Interim President Alan Garber was conferring degrees.

Once they took to the streets , graduating students in caps and gowns held signs and Palestinian flags while chanting.

Asked if they felt their message was being heard, Harvard graduate Noah Sepharia said “I think so.”

“Multiple speakers came up for speeches and brought up how unfair it is that the university decided the day before to prohibit graduating seniors from graduating,” Sepharia said. “It was a corporation decision, not a faculty decision, and that was expressed. Now we have this huge crowd walking out because we support a ceasefire and a free Palestine.”

Students made their way down Massachusetts Avenue to the Harvard-Epworth United Methodist Church, effectively shutting down Massachusetts Avenue while they marched.

Students were later met with pro-Israel demonstrators who also held signs and flags and chanted while the pro-Palestinian group left the church.

“For the students and their families who are graduating, who are either themselves Jewish or Israeli, or simply allies of Israel and the Jewish people, I felt that they shouldn’t walk on their graduation without seeing an Israeli flag and we’ve felt so alone as a community for the past six months,” said Harvard PHD student Deborah Shasheled.

Shasheled, who is also Jewish, said she supported the Harvard Corporation’s decision.

“I was surprised and also pleased that they stood by Harvard policies and guidelines,” she said. “If any student had done what they did — harass students, prevent Jewish students from walking through certain parts of the yard, breaking the locks on some of the gates and allowing over 150 anti-Israel antagonists to come into the yard — what are we supposed to do? Allow those types of behaviors to go completely undisciplined?”

Protesters had dispersed by 12:30 p.m.

Harvard interim president addresses possible commencement protests in opening remarks

Before the walkout, as students, family members, friends and faculty filtered onto the Harvard campus Thursday morning, protesters already gathered .

Some held pro-Palestinian signs. Another group held a sign reading “Harvard against antisemitism.” Overhead, a plane towed a sign that said “Jewish lives matter.”

As commencement got underway, Garber congratulated graduates and addressed the possibility of protests.

“As our ceremony proceeds, some among us may choose to take the liberty of expressing themselves to draw attention to events unfolding in the wider world,” he said. “It is their right to do so. But it is their responsibility to do so with our community—and this occasion—in mind.”

“That said, I acknowledge that this moment of joy for us coincides with moments for others that we cannot comprehend—moments of fear and dread, grief and anguish, suffering and pain,” Garber continued before calling for a minute of silence.

As the ceremony continued, at least one student speaker condemned the university for its handling of recent protests and the decision to withhold degrees for some students, saying officials violated students’ free speech.

“The students had spoken. The faculty had spoken,” said Shruthi Kumar. “Harvard, do you hear us?”

“I am deeply disappointed by the intolerance for freedom of speech and the right to civil disobedience on campus,” Kumar said.

Protest follows decision not to give degrees to some seniors

The Harvard Corporation, which serves as Harvard’s governing body, announced it voted to confer 1,539 degrees this year. In doing so, the corporation overruled a vote from faculty members who recommended degrees to the additional group of seniors who participated in the pro-Palestinian encampment. Though the 13 seniors were allowed to participate in the commencement ceremony, they will not receive their diplomas for the time being.

“We respect each faculty’s responsibility to determine appropriate discipline for its students,” the corporation said in a statement. “Monday’s faculty vote did not, however, revisit these disciplinary rulings, did not purport to engage in the individualized assessment of each case that would ordinarily be required to do so, and, most importantly, did not claim to restore the students to good standing.”

The Harvard pro-Palestinian encampment formed as part of a wave of demonstrations on campuses across the country beginning in April.

From Boston to Los Angeles, student demonstrators occupied campus spaces and at times clashed with counter-protesters and police as they called on university and college officials to divest from companies doing business with Israel.

While Harvard and the encampment on its campus avoided the kind of clashes seen elsewhere, university officials were critical of the demonstration and repeatedly warned demonstrators they would face consequences.

Harvard students voluntarily ended their encampment on May 14, taking down the last such encampment in the Boston area. At the time, protest organizers said the university promised leniency for more than 60 students facing disciplinary action for their involvement.

Scheduled to take place less than 10 days after the encampment ended, Thursday’s commencement followed a flurry of activity in recent days.

On Monday, the Harvard Corporation said, the faculties at Harvard’s schools received a list of degree candidates from the Faculty of Arts and Sciences Registrar, who is tasked with certifying that students have met requirements and are in good standing to get a Harvard degree.

The corporation said the faculties amended the list, adding 13 seniors who Harvard’s disciplinary board previously determined violated the university’s policies by participating in the encampment.

“Because the students included as the result of Monday’s amendment are not in good standing, we cannot responsibly vote to award them degrees at this time,” the corporation said in its statement, explaining its decision to reject the faculties’ recommendation.

The corporation said it understands “that the inability to graduate is consequential for students and their families” and said it fully supports the faculty’s plan to provide expedited review of student disciplinary cases.

The corporation continued, saying it will promptly consider conferring degrees “if, following the completion of all FAS processes, a student becomes eligible to receive a degree.”

The Associated Press on Thursday reported supporters of students demonstrators said the Harvard Corporation’s decision violated an agreement between university officials and protest organizers to end their encampment.

In a statement to the AP, the Harvard Out of Occupied Palestine coalition said the corporation, with its vote, “has proved itself to be a wholly illegitimate body and Garber an illegitimate president, accountable to no one at the university.”

“Today’s actions have plunged the university even further into a crisis of legitimacy and governance, which will have major repercussions for Harvard in the coming months and years,” the statement continued, as reported by the AP.

The pro-Palestinian encampment at Harvard and the events since the encampment ended marked the latest moment of tension in a school year where the Harvard community has seen protests, criticism, and concerns raised about discrimination and hate in the aftermath of Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack on Israel.

Harvard President Claudine Gay resigned in January amid allegations of plagiarism and backlash over her testimony at a congressional hearing about antisemitism on college campuses.

She was replaced by Garber, who is set to continue serving as interim president while Harvard seeks to find a permanent replacement.

Asked for comment on Thursday after the commencement walkout, a Harvard spokesperson referred back to Garber’s opening remarks in the ceremony.

13 Harvard University students who participated in pro-Palestinian encampment will not get degrees

By Jordyn Jagolinzer

Updated on: May 23, 2024 / 7:09 AM EDT / CBS Boston

CAMBRIDGE - Thirteen Harvard University students who participated in the pro-Palestinian protest encampment on campus will not get their degrees at commencement Thursday.

The university's top governing board rejected a recommendation from faculty members to allow the students to graduate with their classmates.

In an online statement explaining the decision, the President and Fellows of Harvard College said degrees would not be granted to students who are not in good standing or facing a disciplinary action.

Students not eligible for degrees

"In coming to this determination, we note that the express provisions of the Harvard College Student Handbook state that students who are not in good standing are not eligible for degrees," the statement said.

The students will be able to participate in ceremonies but will not receive degrees.

"We understand that the inability to graduate is consequential for students and their families," the statement said. "We fully support the Faculty of Arts and Sciences' stated intention to provide expedited review, at this time, of eligible requests for reconsideration or appeal. We will consider conferral of degrees promptly if, following the completion of all FAS processes, a student becomes eligible to receive a degree."

The pro-Palestinian encampment at Harvard Yard was put up in late April and lasted nearly three weeks. The student group was calling for Harvard to divest from Israel and "reinvest resources in Palestinian academic initiatives, communities, and culture."
