Our programme values

Knowledge diversity.

Doing the PhD programme gives an opportunity to invest in one of the five specialisation tracks. The students will explore several methodological perspectives. In addition, we also foster transversal initiatives across knowledge fields and methodologies. We value exchanges with PhD students from our Berlin campus and we actively support international exposure of research activities.

Research Collaboration

If research is sometimes considered as an individual, even solitary, activity, at ESCP the students will be part of a research community encompassing our six European campuses. During your four-year curriculum, PhD students will benefit from close supervision in departments and will learn through co-writing with the faculty staff. Your success is our success, and vice versa.

Professional Ambition

Doing the ESCP programme gives the opportunity to open new and ambitious professional horizons. Whatever the post doctorate objectives - joining the academic or the business research world-, we support ambitions to go “one step further”. Joining a top university research team; boosting the R&D activities of a cutting-edge organisation.

Selection Process

List of required documents.

The official online application process: completion of the application form by candidates, before the deadline specified in the Admission Calendar, and provision of the required documents:

  • Motivation letter
  • Up to date resume
  • Research Statement (1500-2000 words)
  • 3 recommendation letters (a minimum of 2 academics and 1 professional if relevant). You may download the template here
  • copies of diplomas and degrees,
  • transcripts of most recent degrees,
  • IELTS or TOEFL results as a proof of English language proficiency (required score: IELTS 7, TOEFL 100).  Both TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) and IELTS are serving as a proof of a good working knowledge in English. Non-native English speakers applying to the programme are required to take the test unless they have a university degree from an institution located in an English-speaking country. Test score should not be older than 4 years to be acceptable.
  • any research material that might be useful (dissertation, paper...) in .pdf format,
  • copy of your ID or passport,
  • 1 digital photo,
  • application fees (20€) and payment agreement

Your research statement

The research statement (around 4-5 pages long) should give you the opportunity to present a research topic you would like to study. This research topic does not necessarily commit you once for all and leaves room forpossible re-orientations. It must however, give you the opportunity to make a first academic contribution - ie to present a topic with a research question, elements of theory to address your research question, and a first idea of your research design. Your research statement should specify the following points:

  • what your research issue is;
  • why this research issue makes sense (theoretical perspective);
  • why this research issue is relevant (empirical perspective);
  • what your research design could be.

This research statement really matters to optimise the match between your objectives and the requirements of a PhD thesis. Of course, we are aware that you are at the beginning of the process. That is why during your first year you are free to consolidate, modify and sometimes redraft your research project.

Your motivation letter

Your motivation letter will help the jury to understand better what your expectations are, and how you see your evolution in the programme and beyond. Entering a post master programme for four years is a huge decision. We need to be mutually convinced that it is really the right choice for you. Do not forget to justify your choice of specialisation or indicate whether you are still open to different options.

Paris Doctoral Programme Fees and financials

Tuition fees.

  • Year 1: €15,000
  • Year 2: €12,500
  • Year 3: €12,500
  • Year 4: €12,500

However, a legal token registration fee of ± €400 per year for the Doctoral School applies (including CVEC).

ESCP scholarship

ESCP finances a significant proportion of admitted PhD students with a scholarship guaranteed for 4 years. From the 2 nd year, this scholarship is combined with a doctoral contract including teaching, tutoring and research assistance for a total of €23,000.

Each candidate can apply for this cost-of-living scholarship, but it cannot be combined with any other external income. These scholarships are granted on the basis of the excellence of the application.

Students who have received a scholarship are exempt from tuition fees, but not from registration fees.

External Fundings

CIFRE (Conventions Industrielles de Formation par la Recherche) These agreements bring together three partners: a company, a PhD student and a University around a research project, which will lead to a doctoral thesis. The company benefits from an ANRT (Association Nationale Recherche Technologies) subsidy for hiring a PhD student for three years.

Research Projects: Another possibility is the financing of the PhD scholarship by a research project developed in collaboration with one or several companies. The research project can be a stand-alone initiative or supported by one of our chairs at ESCP.

Financial aid from the French Government: In addition to the financial aid for which they are eligible in their country of origin, non-French students can seek grants from the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Requests should be sent to the Cultural Department of the French Embassy in the student’s country of origin. PhD students can also apply for European exchange programme grants (Socrates, Erasmus, Phare). This aid cannot be combined with the ESCP scholarship.

EFMD Accredited Master

Are you enthusiastic about research? Genuinely intellectually curious? Do you like reading and debating? Do you want to be able to answer new questions and love to travel and meet new people? Are you particularly fond of Marketing?

If so, the MSc in Marketing is just for you. The MSc is the first year of the TSM Doctoral Programme which is an EFMD-accredited rigorous international training. It combines the best of practice, theory, qualitative & quantitative tools and reality-based education. You will make presentations, organise seminars, and contribute to management and academic decisions. It also offers high quality teaching and a truly multicultural work environment with students coming from all over the world. Our MSc offers the excellence training needed for international and French university graduates interested in pursuing a career in research. We deliberately keep the MSc small to allow you to work closely with your supervisor, interact with other faculty members who will be happy to act as sounding boards, and gain teaching experience. Students who wish to continue towards their PhD beyond the MSc year, can apply for one of approximately 10 annual University of Toulouse Capitole (UTC) doctoral contracts that finance three years of PhD work (MPhil 1-2-3).

The doctoral contracts are awarded based on academic merit and research project suitability!

Admission rate

A cotutelle, or double degree for the PhD with a foreign university, must be initiated by a TSM Doctoral Programme faculty member (we do not accept requests coming directly from foreign doctoral students). The future supervisors must have pre-existing research ties, such as being co-authors on a paper or collaborating on a research project. Please discuss this project with your supervisor.

No. You should apply first for admission to the Doctoral Programme. Each application will be carefully studied by the professors in the field of specialization. Final decisions are made by the Doctoral Programme Board, so though you could identify potential supervisors doing research in your field of interest, it is not necessary to contact them to agree on supervision prior to application. Identifying the best supervisor is an essential and important milestone for your future PhD thesis: you will do it, with the Doctoral Programme support, during the first 6 months of the MSc degree.

A Bachelor’s degree (in the US), the completion of the first year of a Master (in Europe) or an equivalent diploma, representing a four-year course of study (equivalent 240 ECTS) in an accredited college or university, is required for admission to the doctoral programme (Year 1, Master of Science). A completed Master’s degree is not required, although many applicants have a Master’s degree in such fields as management, finance, economics, engineering, psychology, statistics or other related fields. Superior academic performance is expected.

No, students must sequentially complete the courses in the Master of Science and the MPhil. The programmes are concurrently scheduled, which makes it impossible to complete both programmes during the same academic year.

Generally, all interested applicants apply to follow the overall course of the programme (i.e. first year of MSc coursework followed by the internal application to enter into the MPhil course of study and research). Candidates interested in obtaining a PhD through professional experience are encouraged to research the VAE process and then contact [email protected]

The approximate monthly cost of living in Toulouse is around €730 per month. This includes accommodation, electricity, gas, health, insurance, phone, Internet, food and leisure.

Title : “Money can buy me love:  Gifts as an acute form of social support”.

Abstract : If you are having a hard day, what can someone else do to help you feel better? Maybe they could verbally comfort you or maybe they could give you a small gift. In eight studies, including an in-person dyadic-interaction study, we find that receiving a small material gift, such as a candy bar or flowers, improves receivers’ affect more than a supportive conversation with a close other does. We investigate the mechanism for this effect and find that support receivers perceive a gift to be a larger sacrifice than a conversation. This occurs because gifts seem more receiver-focused (i.e., actions done solely to benefit the receiver) than do conversations. This difference in perceived sacrifice makes gifts (vs. conversations) more effective at promoting emotional recovery.

TITLE:

“Retail Media” and Its Impact on the Retail Ecosystem

ABSTRACT:

“Retail media” refers to ads served to consumers on retailers’ websites. From being essentially non-existent a decade ago, this market is projected to grow to $100 billion by 2026 in the US, which would be more than 20% of  all  US ad spend. Retail media has important implications for advertisers (who are typically third-party sellers or brands), retailers and consumers. In this talk, I will focus on the attached paper, in which we use a game theory model to investigate a retailer’s offering of retail media and manufacturers’ responses as manifested in their advertising and distribution strategies. The manufacturers who sell through the retailer use the retailer’s first-party customer data and their own knowledge of which type of customers their products best match with to bid in auctions run by the retailer to place ads (called “endemic ads”). These ads increase the efficiency of matching customers and products, and the retailer relies on advertising as a significant source of profit in comparison to revenue share. However, bidding competition among manufacturers in ad auctions erodes their profits on top of sharing revenue with the retailer, and offering retail media could drive manufacturers away from selling through the retailer to other options such as direct selling. Consequently, a mid-sized retailer may forego retail media even if it is costless to implement. We also study why, and under which conditions, a retailer may allow manufacturers who do not sell on its platform to still place ads on the retailer’s platform (called “non-endemic ads”). I will also briefly discuss two other related papers that study implications of retail media: one that primarily focuses on implications for retailers’ revenue models, and one that focuses on how consumer response to retail media ads.

The three research tracks of the Masters in Finance, Marketing and Human Resources Management allow access to doctoral studies in Management Sciences for students wishing to pursue academic research.

The objective is to train future teachers and researchers or collaborators with the ability to reflect on scientific knowledge and methods. The skills developed in the research courses can lead students to an academic career in university research, but also open up access to positions as researchers, experts, and high-level executives in business, banking, and administration.

The natural continuation after one of these three "Research" courses is the preparation of a doctoral thesis in Management Sciences within the Doctoral School of Legal, Political, Economic and Management Sciences of the University of Lorraine.

NEOMA Business School’s PhD programme provides you with personally-tailored training, courses, and instruction to obtain the knowledge and skills you need on an international, academic career in the fields of business administration and management.

Why join this programme ?

Neoma’s phd programme is especially suitable for you if you share the objectives to :.

  • learn, in depth, about scientific research and about becoming a researcher yourself;
  • consider an academic career (i.e. becoming an assistant professor and ultimately, a professor) in a business school or university)* ;
  • be able to publish and proliferate your research ideas and results to the international scientific community (i.e., international scientific journals), as well as the general public;
  • start building a network – and become a member of community – with other scholars and researchers internationally as well as in France

If you share the aforementioned four objectives with us, here is what NEOMA’s PhD programme offers you:

Intensive coaching and courses to train your research skills

  • Top academic supervisors to personally train you on how to conduct and publish your research. See a list of selected supervisors
  • A focused set of joint programme courses (providing basic researcher skills), complemented with individually-tailored independent learning modules at NEOMA as well as partner/network institutions (providing specialized skills needed in your own research)
  • Affiliation to and collaboration with other researchers in one of NEOMA’s Areas of Excellence.

Chances to obtain job interviews – upon graduation – in high-quality business schools, in France and abroad

  • Recent PhD graduates from NEOMA have obtained jobs at, among others: University of Minnesota (Minnesota, USA), National Economics University (Vietnam), University of Balamand (Lebanon), Skema Business School (France), Grenoble Ecole de Management (France), IESEG School of Management (France), EM Normandie (France), Fordham University (USA), Institut Mine-Télécom Business School (France), Universidad de Los Andes (Colombia), Duke University (UK), Coventry University (UK), NOVA IMS (Portugal), Lisbon School of Economics and Management (Portugal).

Prospects to publish your research in top-quality international journals

Ability to network within the international scientific community

  • 66% of NEOMA’s faculty and supervisors are international (i.e. not French nationals) and have an extensive international network of researchers.
  • More than 90% of NEOMA’s PhD students are international (i.e. not French nationals).

*You may also apply to NEOMA’s PhD programme if you are primarily interested in a career in the corporate sector, provided you are committed to studying full-time and have funding for your studies.

Layout of the programme

Year 1 – learning the ropes: fundamental courses & familiarisation with your research topic, fundamental coursework.

The first year includes up to 6 intensive courses, providing you basic skills and knowledge that you need for a researcher career. The courses cover such fundamental theories and research methods that are relevant for you regardless of your own discipline/specialisation and regardless of your own research topic.

Examples of these courses include: Basics of Business Research Methods (quantitative  and qualitative methods), Economics and Business Studies, Social Psychology.

The six courses are organized during six intensive seminars, each lasting from a couple of days to a week (October, December, January, February, April, May), at one of our campuses : Reims, Rouen and Paris.

Familiarisation with your own research topic

During the first year, you will also start to work with the faculty members who are assigned as your personal supervisors. This way you will start to familiarise yourself with the topic of your research project, which you will be writing your doctoral thesis on.  The precise topic(s) will be decided in collaboration with your supervisors, who represent one of NEOMA’s Areas of Excellence. Towards the end of the first year, you will start preparing (in collaboration with your supervisors) a research plan for this thesis research of yours.

Research assistance tasks

During the first year of studies, you will be conducting a limited number of research assistance tasks for that Area of Excellence of NEOMA’s which your own thesis research project and topic relates to. These research assistance tasks may not, however, directly relate to your own thesis research. At any rate, the research assistance tasks will provide you with additional training in various researcher skills, such as conducting systematic literature reviews, administering surveys or experiments, cleaning and reorganising data, and analysing and visualising data.

Year 2 – Selected individual courses and start of empirical research

Selected individual courses and learning modules.

Whereas the coursework in Year 1 takes place at NEOMA, during Year 2, you may conduct a limited number (3-4) of courses or learning modules (a) either as independent learning courses, or (b) as organized by external parties (e.g., other French or international business schools or universities; doctoral education networks like EIASM.net). These studies are meant to provide you with a tailored set of specialised skills and knowledge that your own doctoral thesis research project especially calls for (e.g., special methodological skills).

Submitting/defending your own research plan

Before the beginning of the second half of Year 2, you will be required to complete, in collaboration with your supervisors, the preparation of a research plan for your own doctoral thesis research. During the first half of Year 2, you will submit it for internal review at NEOMA, and defend it in a research seminar of your own Department. The research plan shall include a general literature review about your topic, study designs and plans for the empirical studies to be conducted, and plan for the structure of the doctoral thesis (including planned outline of the contents of three articles for article-based theses).

Starting with your empirical research

In line with the aforementioned research plan, you will start gathering or compiling the first data for your thesis research. This will be done in close collaboration with your supervisors. (In the rare case that your research plan did not include empirical studies, you will be starting your non-empirical research here.) Before the beginning of Year 3, you will be required to submit your first research article to an international academic conference or peer-reviewed journal. This article can be a conceptual study or an empirical research paper that is based on your first data set.

Like during the first year, you will be conducting a limited number of research assistance tasks for an Area of Excellence of NEOMA’s during the second year as well.

Year 3  and Year 4 – Research for and writing of the doctoral thesis

Researching and writing.

The bulk of the empirical research work as well as the majority of writing work for your doctoral thesis will take place during Year 3 and Year 4. Both the conduct of research (gathering/compiling data, analysing data, modelling) and the writing work will be done with intensive support from your supervisors. At the end of Year 3, you are expected to submit another research article to an international academic conference or peer-reviewed journal.

Defending the thesis

Ultimately, when you have three research articles accepted for presentation at international academic conferences or in the review process of high-quality peer-reviewed journals, you may submit your thesis to a jury/committee at NEOMA. (If your thesis is not article-based, but instead takes the monograph/treatise format, your supervisors will determine when the thesis can be submitted to the jury). Some months later, you will defend your thesis in front of the jury/committee consisting of two external experts of your research topic (from other institutions than NEOMA) as well as two internal experts (other faculty members of NEOMA than your supervisors).

Teaching and teaching assistance tasks

During Year 3 and Year 4, most PhD candidates will be teaching a course directed at NEOMA’s MSc or BSc students, on a topic related to their expertise and research. Alternatively, you may be supporting and assisting NEOMA’s faculty members on their courses. Getting teaching experience will be highly useful for you when applying for a job after graduation.

Like during the first and second year, you may be conducting as well a limited number of research assistance tasks for an Area of Excellence during the third and fourth year.

Scholarly visit abroad

Typically during the third year of studies, you will be making a few months’ scholarly visit to a business school abroad, as recommended by your supervisor. Financial support will be available for travel costs.

Evaluation procedures

The programme is sanctioned by several levels of validation:

  • continuous assessment: evaluation of each module of the programme in the form of examinations or individual files,
  • the submission of a literature review, or Paper I , and of a thesis proposal at the beginning of the second year and their presentation during a seminar organized by one of the Area of Excellence,
  • the submission of a doctoral research project, or Paper II , at the beginning of the third year, and the presentation in front of a committee made up of 2 internal examiners,
  • the submission of a doctoral thesis at the end of the fourth year and subsequent defense: submission of a written manuscript and oral defense before a jury made up of two internal reviewers and two external reviewers.

At the end of the training and after validation of these different levels of validation, the PhD diploma is awarded to the participants.

Highlights of the programme

All phd students get affiliated with one area of excellence of neoma’s.

‘Areas of Excellence’ are the central pillar of NEOMA’s research strategy, and all admitted PhD students, from 2021 onwards, are affiliated with one of four Areas of Excellence.

The Areas of Excellence create a unique research environment wherein NEOMA’s faculty members as well as PhD students from various disciplines and departments focus on studying certain academically and practically topical research themes and phenomena.

Many of NEOMA’s faculty members (who also supervise PhD students) have a track record of publishing in top academic journals

The list below mentions selected top-tier scientific journals, in which NEOMA’s professors (who also act as supervisors to doctoral students) have published their research in recent years. Please see here for a full list of professors by department.

Please note, though, that even if one of the mentioned professors may become your supervisor as well, your supervisors will be assigned primarily based on the research theme of the open PhD position you are applying to. See the page “Admissions” for the positions).

We recommend you keep an eye on our website towards the end of the year. Thank you.

Admission types

  • Admissions to funded positions of NEOMA’s Areas of Excellence :

Most of NEOMA’s new PhD students are recruited directly to one of  the four Areas of Excellence . The goal is to have each new PhD student affiliated with one of the Areas, in order to closely integrate to and cooperate with research projects and faculty members working on those particular themes.

These positions, within our Areas of Excellence, are fully funded for the duration of the programme (up to 4 years). PhD students selected for these positions will receive a monthly salary, health care benefits, and support for research/study-related costs (e.g., conference travel). Further, due to your affiliation with one of the Areas of Excellence, you will benefit from supervision by and collaboration with top scholars in the Area, from the resources that the Area makes available to its members, and from joining a thriving community of researchers who are passionate about these topics.

Please see here the announcement and research themes for PhD student positions related to NEOMA four Areas of Excellence .

  • Admissions to independently funded positions :

In rare cases, applicants may also be admitted to the PhD programme independently of the aforementioned salaried positions within the Areas of Excellence. If you want to apply for such an independent position, you must still provide evidence that (a) you will be a full-time student (i.e., that you will not be working elsewhere for more than 30% of your time) and that (b) you will have secured funding for the full duration of your studies (e.g., a grant from a company, foundation, government, etc). You also still need to select one of the research themes listed in the announcement for the positions within the Areas of Excellence , while also notifying on the application form, that you are applying for an independently-funded position. Please also note that in an independently-funded position, you will also be responsible for paying tuition fees, without waivers.

Admission criteria

For all types of admission, the following criteria apply.

Eligibility criteria:

  • Advanced degree – e.g., Master’s degree, MSc or MBA – in business administration, management, economics, or any other relevant field for your selected research topic.* Evidence of a degree that will be completed by the start of the program (September) will also be accepted. Admission with an undergraduate degree can be considered for exceptional candidates.
  • Proof of English proficiency (i.e., previous studies and degree in English language, or test certificates with a minimum score (TOEFL : 83, IELTS : 6.0 in each band, PTE : 62 or Cambridge : 175)
  • Evidence of strong motivation to enrol in our PhD program and interest in a career in academia. The application form includes questions aimed at demonstrating passion for research, interest, and knowledge about the research topic you applied for, intention to study full-time for four years, and strong motivation to pursue an academic career
  • Sample of academic writing (a Master’s thesis, research report, working paper, or a published article)

Ranking criteria:

  • A GMAT/GRE test score (Note. You can apply even without a GMAT/GRE test score, but it is recommended to take the test. If you do not have access to the test for one reason or another, please provide evidence of high GPAs of your previous degrees)
  • Short research proposal related to your selected research theme (under the Areas of Excellence)
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Results of a potential interview (Short-listed candidates ranking highest with the eligibility and other ranking criteria will be invited to an interview)

* The ‘relevant other field’ can be any field relevant to the research theme of the position you are applying for. For instance, for marketing and consumer research-related themes,  Master’s degrees in psychology, sociology, social anthropology, communications, information systems, computer science, statistics, systems analysis, industrial engineering, or logistics may be relevant, while for finance-related themes, Master’s degrees in econometrics, statistics, mathematics, or behavioral economics may be relevant.

PSL PhD Tracks

Highly selective and entirely taught in English, PSL PhD tracks are 5-year fully funded programs intended for high-potential students hoping to become top level researchers, in France or abroad. Through its PhD Track Grants, PSL will support outstanding students for the entire duration of their graduate studies, from their Master’s to the completion of their PhD.

The PSL PhD tracks are structured along the lines of models in the world’s top universities, with a strong international focus and funding provided from Master’s to Doctorate. Students are immersed in the environment of excellence of the PSL graduate programs (top level facilities and academic teams, international partners, elective courses, etc.) | Download the brochure   |

Research track from Master’s year 1

Close supervision and customized curriculum

International scientific environment

Funding for 5 years

PSL is renewing its call for applications for its PhD track programs of excellence. These are 5-year programs, fully funded and intended for high-potential students hoping to become top level researchers in the public or private sector, in France or abroad.

The PSL PhD Track grant is €10,000 / year for one or two years at Master’s level then the equivalent of a doctoral contract based on French legislation (see details in the Funding tab).

  • After the first 2 years of the program a Master’s degree is awarded. Students are supervised by an academic tutor; they build their own scientific project and acquire the tools needed to carry out an ambitious research project.
  • The next 3 years are spent entirely on the research project and culminate in the PhD degree awarded by Université PSL.

Phd tracks 2024

Who we look for? The admission criteria common to all PSL PhD Tracks are as follows: academic excellence, quality of the research project, command of English (level C1 recommended).  Previous experience in a research laboratory is highly recommended.

Admissions calendar

•    Application submissions: 17 october - 11 december 2023  (11:59 pm CET time) •    Interviews with eligible candidates: January - February 2024 (depending on the PhD track concerned) •    Admission results: February - March 2024 (depending on the PhD track concerned) Note: the admissions procedure for the PhD track (5-year course) and the admissions procedure for the Master’s degree (2 years) are 2 distinct processes. Applicants may apply in parallel for both programs (PhD track and Master’s) according to the admissions calendars. As the PhD tracks are highly selective, applicants are strongly advised to apply for both programs (PhD tracks and Master’s).

Application procedure Based on an application package (to be submitted online from 17 October 2023  on the PSL portal ) and interview.  Eligible candidates will be invited for an admissions interview (remote). These interviews will be held in English.

Application package  All documents must be submitted in English. Only complete applications submitted within the deadlines will be considered by the committee. Applicants should submit the following documents:

  • Academic CV
  • Transcripts and diplomas from each higher education institution / university attended (Bachelor and Master if applicable).  One unique pdf for all your documents. You can use pdf-merge website for example.
  • Statement of purpose  (In English, strict 1 page limit) The purpose of this document is to explain who you are and what you expect from your postgraduate studies. Give details about your interest in the field and your career goals. You can use this document to clarify anything unusual in your CV or your transcripts. One page maximum.
  • Research statement (In English, 1 to 2 pages) This project should clearly define your interests within your area of research and specialization. You should present a structured research project showing your commitment and describing what you plan for the future of your research if you join a PSL PhD track.
  • Proof of English proficiency , level C1 (compulsory proof required if English is not your mother tongue) The language prerequisites specific to each PhD track are detailed on the applications portal. In general: - If your first language is English or if you have earned a higher education diploma (BA, MA) in an English-speaking university, you should include a statement to this effect. - If not, you should include the official results from a recent test of English, e.g. TOEFL or IELTS. If you have no recent official results, you can submit some older test results provisionally. This will not detract from the assessment of your application, but we reserve the right to ask for more recent official results later in the selection process.
  • References: contact details (name, position title, email) of at least two academic referees.

More information regarding the statement of pupose and the research statement in the "FAQ" tab.

Eligibility requirements   In order to apply to a PSL PhD track, applicants must meet the entry requirements specific to the Master’s degree concerned, as described on the program website. In particular, irrespective of the PhD track concerned, applicants should hold at least a Bachelor’s degree or any other diploma equivalent to 180 ECTS credits (High school diploma + 3 years equivalent) (or be in the final year of preparing such a course in the year they apply).

For students already enrolled at PSL and who satisfy the criteria listed below: in addition to the general admission requirements, only students enrolled in Year 3 of a Bachelor’s degree or in a Master’s degree that is not part of the targeted Graduate Program are eligible. In other words, note the following 3 cases: o    Student in Bachelor’s Year 3 at PSL, whatever the degree course -> eligible to apply o    Student in PSL Master’s degree outside the Graduate Program concerned -> eligible to apply o    Student in PSL Master’s degree included in the Graduate Program concerned -> not eligible to apply

A PhD Track grant provides funding of €10,000 per year of enrollment in the Master’s degree, then the amount currently in force according to the decree of 29 August 2016 setting the amount of remuneration for a contractual PhD student on a 3-year doctoral contract. Funding for the Master’s degree is a gratuity granted directly to the student; the doctoral contract is an employment contract within the meaning of the regulations in force. Thus the PhD student receives a salary that entitles him or her to benefits and is subject to social contributions. The PhD student is considered as an employee for the duration of the contract.

In addition to the grant, students in 2024/25 will also have the following support services to help them settle into PSL and Paris:

  • 3 months of online FLE courses (French as a foreign language) provided free of charge to non-French-speaking students
  • Assistance in their search for accommodation in Paris by the PSL Housing Service
  • For international students, administrative support and assistance are available from the PSL Welcome Desk (residence permits, health insurance, opening a bank account, Buddy Program, language exchange, etc.)
  • Access to PSL’s free healthcare services, including the remote consultation service

Tuition fees, as well as the cost of housing, transport, and living expenses in general are paid by the student.

Admissions & prerequisites

  • The Master’s degree is a two-year program
  • The PhD Track is a five-year, funded and research-oriented program, including a Master’s degree* and research internships, then a Doctorate. You will obtain a Master’s degree then a PhD degree. These 2 diplomas will be awarded by Université PSL.

* When you apply to the PhD Track, you will be asked to choose the Master’s course that you want to follow for the first 2 years of the course (see list of eligible Master’s degrees).

Absolutely. Given the very high selectivity of the PhD Tracks, it is strongly recommended that you apply for the Master’s degree in parallel if you are interested in both programs. Look at the page of the Master’s degree that you are interested in for the application calendar and how to apply.

The PhD Track is a 5-year course associated with a PSL graduate program . The graduate programs follow the model of the “graduate school” in international universities, and consist of an entity (School) that contains research laboratories, academic teams, training programs, etc. The PhD tracks are specific training courses within a graduate program.

The PSL PhD Tracks are intended for high-potential students hoping to become top-level researchers in the public or private sector. If you are passionate about research and you want an international career, you are ideal for the PhD track program.

The admission criteria common to all the PSL PhD Tracks are as follows: academic excellence, research project, command of English (C1 level) .

No personal proof is required for this purpose. The admission criteria are exclusively academic.

Certainly, if you speak English fluently. All courses are taught in English.

Level C1 is strongly recommended. Supporting documents are not compulsory for all PhD tracks (see what documents are required in the application portal). Note that interviews with eligible candidates take place in English and allow the jury to assess your oral level.

Certainly. However, note that many applicants already have a Master’s degree.

Yes, if you are preparing the last year of an undergraduate diploma in the year you apply for PhD Tracks. You should upload the most recent transcripts you have available to the applications portal. If you have graduated, you will then be asked to produce your diploma when you enroll.

Admission procedure 2024

•    Application submissions: 17 october - 11 december 2023 (11:59 pm CET time) •    Interviews with eligible candidates: January / February 2024 (depending on the PhD track concerned).  These interviews will be held in English. •    Admission results: February / Early March 2024

  • Transcripts and diplomas from each higher education institution / university attended One unique pdf for all documents. You can merge them with pdf-merge for example.
  • Proof of English proficiency , level C1 (proof not compulsory but recommended) The language prerequisites specific to each PhD track are detailed on the applications portal. In general: - If your first language is English or if you have earned a higher education diploma (BA/BS.c, MA) in an English-speaking university, you should include a statement to this effect. - If not, you should include the official results from a recent test of English, e.g. TOEFL or IELTS. If you have no recent official results, you can submit some older test results provisionally. This will not detract from the assessment of your application, but we reserve the right to ask for more recent official results later in the selection process.

The research statement must be written in English and not exceed 2 pages. A research statement is a short document that provides a brief history of your past research experience, the current state of your research, and the future work you intend to complete. Your research statement should situate your work within the larger context of your field and show how your works contribute, complicate, or counter other work being done. It should be written for an audience of other professionals in your field. Make sure that your statement is clearly tied together. Show a progression. What is the primary question that you have tried to address over the course of your academic career? Why is this question important to the field? How has each stage of your work related to that question?

The statement of purpose  must be written in English and not exceed 1 page. A statement of purpose (SOP), sometimes referred to as a personal statement, is a critical piece of a graduate program application. It tells admissions committees who you are, what your academic and professional interests are, and how you’ll add value to the GP you’re applying to. The statement of purpose reflects not only who you are as a candidate but your writing abilities and qualifications as well. A good personal statement should contain: your personal motivations for applying to the program, your accomplishments and success-stories, the challenges you’ve faced and overcome.

The PSL PhD Track grant is €10,000 / year for one or two years at Master’s level then the equivalent of a doctoral contract based on French legislation.

The combining of funding with other grants will be examined on a case by case basis by the jury of the Graduate Program concerned, which will determine whether the 2 funding methods are compatible.

Note in particular that students who have also been awarded an Eiffel scholarship may not combine the 2 grants during the 2 years of the Master’s degree. However, the Eiffel scholarship can replace the Master’s grant provided in the PSL PhD track for the first two years of the program (until the start of the doctoral studies).

The PhD tracks are 5-year courses. As a rough guide, below are the provisional annual amounts for enrollment fees, based on the rates in force in 2023/24. Note that the grant awarded to students on the PSL PhD tracks does not include these annual enrollment fees.

In addition to these fees is the “Contribution to student and campus life” (CVEC) of around €100 / year. There are several exemptions available.  I nformation
