The PhD program in Politics is aimed at giving participants the skills needed to embark on an academic or professional career in international institutions, NGOs, public and private research institutes, and political and institutional communications. The goal of the PhD program is to supply the tools needed to enter the current debate in political philosophy – particularly with regard to international relations - and to provide a forum in which this debate can continue and evolve in an advanced academic and internationally relevant context.
The PhD program in Politics includes a taught element, with courses on theories, methods, research design and a range of academic skills. In addition, we support research and fieldwork through funding for periods of study abroad and cooperation with international partners.
The Department of Political Science at Luiss University has excellence in a number of research clusters and we invite research proposals specifically in these areas: Regional and Global Governance, European Integration; Communication Studies; Parliaments, Elections and Political Representation; Politics and Institutions: History, Normative Theory and Current Practices; Public Policy.

Terri Kim is Professor of Comparative Higher Education (Hon. full prof. and the founding Leader of Higher Education Research Group (HERG) at UEL); Visiting Professor at Yonsei University, Seoul, Korea; Honorary Senior Research Fellow at UCL Institute of Education, ICIS; and Principal Fellow of Higher Education Academy in the UK. Previously she was a research consultant to OECD/CERI; Visiting Scholar in International Relations at LSE and the Collège de France in Paris; Distinguished Visiting Scholar at Monash University in Melbourne; and Academic Visitor at St Antony’s College, Oxford. Her research interests include the relations of territory, mobility, knowledge and identity; diasporas and internationalization; state-university relations; the academic profession and leadership in HE. Her longstanding research has focused on how border-crossing academic mobility/migration has led to new knowledge creation and radical innovations that shift paradigms; and translating these innovations into social impact to contribute to human flourishing and inclusive social justice. She has analysed the diverse contexts of HE Internationalisation and EDI in the UK and other countries from a comparative perspective. She co-led the UK Advance HE-funded project: Diversifying Leadership in HE. She has served as a co-convener of the SRHE Policy Network, a member of the Executive Committee of CESE (Comparative Education Society in Europe) and the editorial board member of Comparative Education, Intercultural Education, British Journal of Educational Studies, and Policy Reviews in Higher Education. She has published one book, Forming the Academic Profession in East Asia: a Comparative Analysis (Routledge, 2001/ Re-issued in 2018), five edited volumes as Special Issues: Internationalisation and Development in East Asian Higher Education (2016); Diaspora and Internationalisation in Higher Education (2021); Biographies of Comparative Education: Knowledge and Identity on the Move (2020); Religions and Comparative Education (2019); Interculturality and Higher Education (2009) and 61 articles internationally (Google Scholar: https://scholar.google.co.kr/citations?user=nV2UPg8AAAAJ&hl=en&oi=ao). She has a strong track record of disseminating - nationally and internationally - her findings through research, policy and public fora. These have permitted her to translate her research-based knowledge in accessible ways to diverse international academic communities and international organisations as well as national governments and other policy-making stakeholders. Many of her invited talks and publications have directly addressed future directions and related them to the needs of the relevant governments as well as to the interests of civil society, e.g. OECD HE 2030 project; the European Migration Network seminar keynote. The university space, the most endangered zone in Indian democracy in the present, is witnessing the ideological churnings, contradictions, and emergent possibilities of affinity among radical voices contesting culturally hegemonic practices. Student activism in general and anti-caste activism in particular offer a complex interplay of caste, gender, culture, and politics in the university space, traditionally defined as neutral. Envisioning a democratic, socially just, and genuinely secular nation, historically marginalized students challenge and critique hegemonic narratives. This article argues that anti-caste activism on campuses invokes the democratic space of universities, where ideological meanings are constructed and deconstructed to unveil the suppression of historically marginalized voices in contemporary network society. The dominant culture and politics are actually rooted in the iron laws of ancient hierarchies intrinsically opposed to the self-historicizing and well-in...

This book reflects on the rapid rise of social media across the African continent and the legal and extra-legal efforts governments have invented to try to contain it. The relentless growth of social media platforms in Africa has provided the means of resistance, self-expression, and national self-fashioning for the continent's restlessly energetic and contagiously creative youth. This has provided a profound challenge to the African "gatekeeper state", which has often responded with strategies to constrict and constrain the rhetorical luxuriance of the social media and digital sphere. Drawing on cases from across the continent, contributors explore the form and nature of social media and government censorship, often via antisocial media laws, or less overt tactics such as state cybersurveillance, spyware attacks on social media activists, or the artful deployment of the rhetoric of "fake news" as a smokescreen to muzzle critical voices. The book also reflects on the Chinese influence in African governments' clampdown on social media and the role of Israeli NSO Group Technologies, as well as the tactics and technologies which activists and users are deploying to resist or circumvent social media censorship. Drawing on a range of methodologies and disciplinary approaches, this book will be an important contribution to researchers with an interest in social media activism, digital rebellion, discursive democracy in transitional societies, censorship on the Internet, and Africa more broadly.
