The objective of writing this research project proposal is to identify open question in robotic manipulation research and to develop an approach towards adressing it. The choice of topic is up to you, but it should be related to the general theme of the course. As part of the project you should:

Your topic may be related to your graduate research or another class project (as long as permission is granted by the instructor of your other class); however, you must make the relationship to your other work clear in your proposal and final paper and describe how you have extended this research for this class. If you have difficulty finding an appropriate topic, feel free to talk with the course staff during office hours or post to Piazza.

you can find some example project ideas.

Clearly motivate and describe the problem to be solved, the approach to be taken, and how you will measure success. Please reference any prior work that you plan to build upon. A first (minimum) one page version will be due mid-October to ensure the quality of the direction of the proposal so that you have a chance to refine the final product.

The final proposal is worth 10% of your final grade and should be written in the following form:

For formatting the final and the draft proposal use the paper templates from . When using Latex, feel free to use pdflatex to compile the PDF. For the one-page draft proposal, you don't need a separate abstract. Consider the one-page draft as an extended abstract.

Pages listed below are based on double-column IEEE paper format. We expect your proposal to be 4-5 pages long. We will remove points if you go above this 5 page limit.

This is the most important section of any report and should summarize the key points of your paper.

Briefly describe what you will be presenting and why it is important.

Present a review of previous research on this topic. Do not simply review a number of individual papers, but try to synthesize what has been done. This section should be in a form such that the current state-of-the-art is easily appreciated. State the shortcomings in our current knowledge, and in a final paragraph or two suggest several areas that require further research.

From areas suggested at the end of the previous section, state concisely and specifically a particular problem that you propose to address. In broad terms, describe how you might investigate this problem with experiments, computer simulations, or both. Point out the difficulties that you may expect to encounter in this research. State what you believe will be the significance of your proposed research. Provide a realistic timetable for the completion of the work. Include figures that help to illustrate your hypotheses, methods, or experimental design.

To ensure fair grading, your written report must include a statement of work which contains the following information:

: Have you conducted this project by yourself or with collaborators? If you worked with collaborators on your project, please provide:

your collaborators. Please ensure that they are aware of and have consented to you submitting the project as a standalone course project. We may contact them to verify this.

: If this project was done in some other context (not just for CS326), please describe this other context (ie. another class, ongoing research project, recent paper submission).

Your paper should be referenced using primarily journal articles or conference papers. References and reference citations should conform to the style of IEEE.

If you are going for the 4 unit version of the course, your task is to implement some parts of your project proposal. It may be done in any programming language, and you may use any libraries or software available to you. If you have difficulty finding an appropriate topic, feel free to talk with the course staff during office hours or post to Piazza.

Submit the initial one-page draft in PDF through Canvas.

The final proposal is worth 10% of your final grade. It will be graded based on the following criteria:

You will present your research proposal during the last few class meetings. The allotted time is 6 minutes if you are taking the class for 3 units followed by 2 minutes of Q/A (Total = 8 min), and 12 mins if taking the class for 4 units followed by 3 minutes of Q/A (Total = 15 min). Time constraints will be enforced. You may use your own laptop or you may submit your presentation on Canvas. The presentation is worth 10% of your final grade.

As part of the final project, you will be randomly assigned two research proposals to peer review in the spirit of a real conference or journal article review. Please structure your reviews in the same way as the foundational paper reviews (1-2 pages long).

The peer reviews will be worth 10% of your grade (5% each). You will be graded according to the quality and constructiveness of your review. Your reviews will be provided anonymously to the authors, so please do not include your name in your review. If you would like to nominate one or both of the papers for the “best paper award,” please note this in your review.

Please submit your two reviews in PDF format to Canvas (on the peer review section of the Final Proposal assignment).

Word or LaTex for research proposal and dissertation?

Hello fellow PhD seekers,

I’m beginning to write my research proposal for my PhD (molecular biology, genetics, evolution) and am torn between writing it in and Word versus LaTex.

I have basic skills in LaTex as I spent my first year strictly using it for homework assignments, which were most often just text documents. Now, I am revisiting LaTex for my proposal.

Most often, I see LaTex being demonstrated for documents in physical sciences because of all of the equations and the great formatting that LaTex allows, but I see it being used far less often in the biological sciences. In fact, I don’t know anyone besides me in my program that even knows about LaTex.

That being said, I would love to get feedback from the community on their use and/or preference LaTex and how well you can integrate tables and figures into your document.

One good source is Ch. 16 of Justin Zobel's book, Writing for Computer Science (3rd edition). The MIT thesis template in LaTeX

The latex template.

The current MIT thesis template was developed in 2023, using up-to-date LaTeX coding, to meet the current formatting requirements of the MIT Libraries. The title and abstract pages are automatically laid out from information provided by the user. This template includes options to use a variety of fonts, and it is compatible with either pdfTeX or unicode engines such as luaLaTeX. When using LaTeX formats dated November 2022 or later, the resulting pdf file meets the PDF/A-2b archivability standard. A standard TeX Live installation includes all other packages required by the template.

  • Documentation: Documentation for the template is available in pdf format here .
  • Download: The most current LaTeX files for this template are distributed through the Comprehensive TeX Archive Network (CTAN): https://ctan.org/pkg/mitthesis Download
  • Overleaf.com: The CTAN template is also present in Overleaf.com's template gallery, here . Learn more about Overleaf at MIT .
  • Gallery of fonts: Sample theses in the predefined font sets are available here .
  • Sample title pages: Sample title pages for various numbers of authors and degrees are here .

This template was written by John Lienhard at the request of the MIT Libraries.

Specifications for MIT theses

The formatting requirements for MIT theses are set by the MIT Libraries, as described at this url: http://libraries.mit.edu/archives/thesis-specs/ . Questions regarding these specifications should be directed to [email protected] .

The original LaTeX 2.09 template was written by Stephen Gildea in the late 1980s (also in CTAN, here ). That template was edited by many later students, leading to the files archived here.

LaTeX has changed greatly since the original MIT thesis template was written. LaTeX 2.09 was replaced by LaTeX2e in 1994. New engines were developed, particularly pdfTeX during the 1990s and Unicode-aware engines in the decades that followed. Many packages and fonts were developed to accompany the original platform, particularly after 2000; and major updates to the LaTeX kernel began in 2018. Over the years, the MIT Libraries have changed the required format several times, especially as electronic thesis submission has become the norm. The original template served MIT well; but by the early 2020s, it was substantially out of date. That situation motivated the creation of this new template.

Many students have also found useful tips for dealing with specific problems by entering keywords such as "LaTeX formatting table captions" in their favorite search engines.

Most Common LaTeX to PDF Problem

The most common problem we see with Electronic Theses & Dissertations (ETDs) created in LaTeX is the altering of the page size, particularly an increase of the bottom margin to more than one inch, and sometimes an accompanying decrease in the top and/or right margins to less than the requisite one inch. Less frequently, there will also be problems with figures disappearing or changing appearance. The sizing error may be introduced inadvertently during the conversion from .dvi to .pdf or .ps when the program doing the converting defaults to the A4 European page size. Always check your PDF file after conversion, even if your source file looked perfect.

The following fixes have been found by your fellow Tech graduate students and passed along to the Graduate Thesis Office. We hope they help you:

  • First, before converting the .tex file to .dvi, make sure the class header file in your .tex file says something like "\documentclass[12pt, letter]{article}".
  • If you are converting the resulting .dvi file to a .ps file, be sure the dvips options specify "-P pdf -t letter".
  • When you are converting to .pdf from either the .dvi file directly or from a .ps file, locate the C:\texmf\dvipdfm\config\config\ or analogous folder for PDFs in your system. Replace the line "p a4" with "p letter".

Good MSc Thesis Proposal Templates on Overleaf? [duplicate]

I need to write an MSc thesis proposal, and I can't seem to find any good templates for such. Do you guys know of any good templates? It's urgent :)

  • 1 @gman Brandon asks for a template to write a proposal, not the actual thesis, at this moment –  Alessandro Cuttin Commented Apr 14, 2020 at 10:06

I successfully managed to do my MSc thesis on the subject I wanted to discuss, with the professor I liked, with the help of a company I liked, by submitting a proposal written using the tufte-latex class.

I guess however that it's not the documentclass, rather the content of your proposal, that will help you to nail it!

In any case, the tufte-latex class is very nice (even though it appears that it's not under active development -- but for your needs it should do the job).

Here's an example to make you started ;)

LaTeX template to outline and draft academic papers (or theses) in Computer Science (in English and German language)

Latex template for research proposals.

This LaTeX template can be used to draft and outline the topic for a academic paper or thesis in Computer Science (in English and German language). I have found it particular helpful for topics that are more on the engineering side of CS.

Table of Contents

Core ideas and concept, how to fill in the template, pdf generation tool chain, setup latex environment from scratch.

Students at the Computer Science department of University of Applied Sciences Darmstadt frequently have to write seminar papers. In addition, they have craft a comprehensive thesis (Bachelor's Thesis or Master's Thesis, depending on the degree they aim for) at the end of their studies. During the creation of these papers (or theses), one of the major challenges for many students is to find the topic they are going to write about and shape it the way that it is interesting and of relevance.

The purpose of this template is to support students in developing and defining the essence of what they want to write their academic papers about.

As a supervisor I ask my students to fill it the template already at the start of their research projects. It forces them to write down, rethink, and reshape their research ideas. Based on this document I will discuss their ideas with them, helping them to shape a good storyline and strategy for their work.

Usually my students create multiple iterations of this documents as they dive deeper and deeper into their area of research and gain deeper understanding of what they want to accomplish.

The most important part for the students, is to have them answer the following four questions (within in the template they are described in much further detail as LaTeX comments):

  • The objective here is to have students give a very brief and to the point description (1 sentence) of the problem they want to address within their paper.
  • Why is the problem at all relevant? Why should we spend effort into investigating/solving it?
  • What results have been (or will be) produced? How do these results address the proposed problem?
  • What is the quality of the results? What shortcomings are there? How did the student ensure that the results are genuine?

Furthermore, I ask them to provide:

  • A abstract of their proposed work
  • A proposal for a table of contents
  • relevant/significant pieces of related work they have already found

The intention of this template was to be as easily usable as possible. Nevertheless, there are a few things to keep in mind while using it. The following guide is supposed to assist you in using it as smooth as possible.

Step 0: Clone, Open, and Generate a PDF

Start by cloning or downloading this repository and opening the researchproposal.tex file in your favorite LaTeX environment. The template is set up the way that, at this point, you should be able to generate a PDF without any errors or warnings. This will allow you to double check that your environment is set up the way that you can generate a PDF document from the template.

In case you have trouble generating the PDF, please take a look to the PDF generation tool chain section. This may help you getting the PDF generated.

Step 1: Choose Language

Please acknowledge that the template is bilingual. It can be used to create a research proposal in English or in German language. Thus, the first thing you have to do is choosing the language that you want to use. This is done by opening researchproposal.tex and stating the language in the following comment block.

Step 2: Create your Proposal - Fill in your ideas!

Obviously, filling in your content is the most important step. In order to do that, you will find a lot of comment blocks in the document that assist you. These blocks will also give you further explanations about what you need to consider and keep in mind. This is where you need to fill in your content.

Important: Read and follow the explanations for each comment block!

The following is an example for these blocks:

There is nothing special about the tool chain used to generate the pdf. It uses:

  • pdflatex - to generate a pdf document
  • biber - to process the bibliography

Assuming you are familiar with LaTeX it should easily be set up.

Please understand, if you have a running environment that makes sense to you - stick with it! It is by no means necessary to use the one poposed here, if you should be in one of my classes. Further, there are probably better environments out there.

If you should not have a working environment, a possible environment setup for LaTeX editing is described here .

The essence and wisdom of the core of this research proposal is NOT my own.

It is more the collected wisdom from many people that I have met and talked to. Further, I have encountered this style of presenting academic engineering work as a best practice at many well established conferences.

To the best of my knowledge I am just the only one to make it available like that.
