This is truly a hidden gem of Des Moines. I discovered it while working in the skywalks and try to get back even though it's not a very convenient spot. I get the shrimp and greens. Something about the combination of flavors of their soft bread, salty dish and sweet Diet Coke always hits the spot. If you have friends who work at Principal, insist that you eat here.
This place is great for lunch (they aren't open for dinner) if you are downtown! Yes, sometimes it seems they rush you a little in line when you're ordering but the menu isn't that extensive and everything I've tried (pastas) have been delicious. The workers are very nice and can answer any questions you have about the pastas!...
Went here for lunch with my mom the other day. I was very impressed! I got the tomato basil soup and it was amazing! I have never had something like that before. I also got the roast beef half sand which and it was very tasty. The soup and half sand which filled me up for a very reasonable price! Service was great and good came out quick. Would definitely recommend for a food lunch date.
Lucky for me, I chose Basil for lunch today! I ordered the Jalapeno Cream with Garlic Tomato pasta special topped with Chicken. This dish packed just enough heat to make it super flavorful. This family owned restaurant is a must for those looking for an affordable, quick, and delicious meal. The line out the door was evidence of how much others enjoy this gem as well. Make sure you check this spot out!
I've been here a few times now. I must admit I wasn't particularly enthused with their sausage & pepper pasta. This last time, though, I had the linguine Alfredo and that dish was a joyful plate full of comfort food. It totally hit the spot! I've also had their Red Pepper Soup a couple of times and it's very good. I'm not a huge fan of their pizza, but as other Yelpers here have stated, this is a solid spot for lunch.

Red Lobster has abruptly closed dozens of restaurants across the country.
A look at the restaurant chain's website reveals 87 stores temporarily closed across 27 states, with some of them having their kitchen equipment up for auction on an online restaurant liquidator.
The liquidator, TAGeX Brands, announced Monday it is auctioning off equipment this week from 48 locations that have closed. The website says auctions are live and will end periodically on Thursday, and that each winner will receive the "entire contents of the Red Lobster location they bid on."
USA TODAY reached out to Red Lobster on Tuesday and did not get a response prior to publication.
Here's what we know about the closures, including where they're happening and why these restaurants are closing.

Red Lobster considered filing for bankruptcy in April
The seafood chain considered filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy last month in an effort to restructure its debt, according to Bloomberg .
The company had been getting advice from law firm King & Spalding as it looked to shed some long-term contracts and renegotiate leases, Bloomberg reported, noting that Red Lobster's cash flows had been weighed down by leases and labor costs, among other issues.
Red Lobster suffered big losses with 'Ultimate Endless Shrimp' promotion
In 2023, the seafood chain's " Ultimate Endless Shrimp " deal became more popular than expected, inadvertently becoming a key factor in a $11 million loss in the third quarter.
The limited-time promotional deal, in which guests picked two types of shrimp to enjoy nonstop for $20, landed a permanent spot on Red Lobster menus in June. Red Lobster's parent company, Thai Union Group, said in November 2023 that the chain was headed toward a $20 million loss for 2023. Now the endless shrimp deal costs $25.
Thai Union Group CFO Ludovic Regis Henri Garnier said in an earnings report call that the company was aware the initial price for the endless-shrimp deal was cheap. The offer was intended to draw customers into restaurants, but orders exceeded expectations, he said.
"We wanted to boost our traffic, and it didn't work," Garnier told investors in November 2023, according to Restaurant Business Magazine . "We want to keep it on the menu. And of course we need to be much more careful regarding what are the entry points and what is the price point we are offering for this promotion."

Spartanburg's newest Indian restaurant opening: What to know about Garlic & Ginger
Get ready to go on a culinary journey with the aromatic flavors of India with the grand opening of Garlic & Ginger, located at 464 East Main St., in Spartanburg.
The Indian restaurant is scheduled to open to the public on Wednesday, May 15.
Garlic & Ginger owner Rakesha Chopra said the restaurant was originally going to open in Mississippi, but destiny had him meet Arun Kakkar, executive chef and co-owner.
Chopra said it's been his passion to open an Indian restaurant, primarily because he's mainly worked in the pizza industry. He moved back to Spartanburg from Arkansas and opened Pi Squared in 2017.
"It was destiny when we met," Chopra said. "He came to me and pushed me to open something here. It took us five months to find this place, and it just fell into place."
Kakkar said his passion is cooking, which he's been doing since coming to America in 1999. For 40 years, he has traveled America, working in restaurants from Jackson, Mississippi, to Los Angeles. His favorite signature dish is his Chicken Tikka Masala.
"These are signature dishes (from India), but taste-wise, they're modified to not be so spiced," Kakkar said. "I've been doing this for 40 years, but this is my own (restaurant). It's my passion, and when I was a child, my mother is my inspiration. I would sit next to her and help. My Chicken Tikka Masala, I claim that as my best."
Kakkar and Chopra said they have big plans and a hopeful future for Garlic & Ginger, hoping it will become why people visit Spartanburg.
"We want people to visit Spartanburg because of this restaurant," Chopra said. "We want to make it the best of the best."
What to know about Garlic & Ginger's grand opening
The restaurant will serve buffet-style lunch and dinner for two to three weeks. Chopra said this will help guests familiarize themselves with the menu items.
The new restaurant is housed where the Mata's Mexican Bar and Grill and Mellow Mushroom were located.
The menu contains over 50 authentic Indian dishes, including vegan and vegetarian options, salads, table dishes, desserts, and more. Table dishes include Masala Chai, an aromatic and spiced tea, and Papadum, a crispy lentil wafer made of black gram bean flour, and dessert.
Other dishes include butter chicken, mango, chicken or lamb curry, dal pancham tadka, dal makhani, and other flavorful dishes. Chutneys are also available if you want more authentic aromas.
Here is what to know about restaurant hours:
- Monday, closed.
- Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday, 11:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. for lunch and 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. for dinner.
- Friday and Saturday, 11:30 until 2 p.m. for lunch and 5 p.m. until 10 p.m. for dinner.
Garlic & Ginger will offer buffet lunch options Tuesday through Sunday during their regular lunch hours. To reach them, you can call 864-308-1224 or visit their Facebook page.

Red Lobster Map Shows Latest Abrupt Closures
S eafood chain Red Lobster has abruptly closed at least 48 of its location across the U.S., according to reports, as the company navigates troubled financial waters.
While the company hasn't officially announced the closures or commented on them, restaurant liquidator TAGeX Brands publicized the auctioning of the kitchen equipment, furniture and all other contents inside the restaurants apparently shutting down on Monday.
Read more: The Best Credit Cards for Restaurants and Takeout
"Select Red Lobster locations CLOSED today! Prepare for the LARGEST restaurant liquidation EVER! Fixtures, furniture, and equipment MUST GO," the liquidator wrote on X , formerly known as Twitter , on Monday. "Auctions start NOW. SINGLE winner for each location. WINNER TAKES ALL." TAGeX Brands indicates that the auction, which will continue through Thursday, involves more than 50 Red Lobster locations.
The reported closures come on the back of recent reports saying that Red Lobster was considering filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy after a series of recent major losses. In the third quarter of 2023, the seafood chain reported a loss of more than $11 million, according to Restaurant Business.
Red Lobster's parent company Thai Union Group blamed the seafood chain's decision to introduce its "Ultimate Endless Shrimp" as a permanent offer on its regular menu as a "key factor" for the company's losses. Under the offer, which used to be temporary, clients could choose two types of shrimp and eat as much as they wanted for just $20. The deal helped traffic to Red Lobster grow by 4 percent year-on-year—but at a cost.
"We knew the price was cheap, but the idea was to bring more traffic to the restaurants," Thai Union Group's CFO Ludovic Regis Henri Garnier told investors in November 2023, as reported by Restaurant Business. "So we wanted to boost our traffic, and it didn't work," at least not in terms of improving the chain's overall economic performance.
Thai Union Group announced earlier this year that it would be divesting from Red Lobster.
Newsweek contacted Red Lobster for comment on the closures by email early on Tuesday.

City curbs Clark Street closure, allowing limited vehicle traffic alongside expanded outdoor dining
The closure of the three-block stretch on north clark street between grand avenue and kinzie street will return, but with seating next to the curb and space for vehicle traffic..
Diners on the sidewalk patio outside of The Smith, at 400 N. Clark St., in River North on May 2. Last year, the city closed the entire street to vehicle traffic, allowing restaurants to place tables on the street.
Jim Vondruska/For The Sun-Times
Two weeks after the outdoor dining season officially began , city officials have issued clarity on the popular Clark Street closure in River North.
The closure of the three-block stretch on North Clark Street between Grand Avenue and Kinzie Street will return, but with a compromise that allows both dining and vehicle traffic on the street. The area was only open to pedestrian traffic in years past.
Permits issued Wednesday by the Chicago Department of Transportation allow restaurants to extend outdoor dining areas onto the sidewalk and the curb lane. They’re in effect through the end of the city’s outdoor dining season, which runs from May 1 to Oct. 31.
- Clark Street closures for outdoor dining were great during the pandemic. Now? Not so much
- Chicago’s outdoor dining program kicks off, while Clark Street closure awaits approval
Mayor Brandon Johnson’s office said in a statement that the new arrangement “balances the needs of residents, businesses, workers, visitors and the local community.”
“The format will give participating restaurants extra capacity and create an inviting outdoor space for dining, while taking into account the need for accessibility and traffic flow in the River North community,” the statement said.
Sections of North Clark Street, from West Grand Avenue to West Kinzie Street, are blocked off for expanded outdoor dining in November 2022.
Tyler Pasciak LaRiviere/Sun-Times
The outdoor dining program was introduced in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic to help restaurants continue to serve customers in a socially distant manner.
The new rules are seen as a compromise between River North residents, other businesses and organizations who opposed the full street closure, and restaurants on Clark Street that benefited from seating extra patrons.
Bob Gottfred, president of the Sterling Private Residences Condominium Association, said the Clark Street closure caused “crushing traffic” and blocked off a “main artery” for emergency vehicles driving through the area.
“I’m concerned about our residents and their safety, and their quality of life, getting in and out of our building and bottling up in front of our place, not to mention the safety part of it,” said Gottfred, who lives in one of the 389 units in the Sterling condo.
Other organizations like the River North Residents Association, Magnificent Mile Association and Gold Coast Neighbors, along with tens of other restaurants and hotels have in the past submitted letters to the city opposing the full street closure.
The Smith, however, a restaurant at Clark and Kinzie, preferred a full street closure, general manager Eric Scofield said. But, he added that they’re thankful to have “a little bit more than just the sidewalk.”
“Obviously, we want the full street closure. It was great for the neighborhood and great for business, and we think it also attracted people to the area on a positive level,” Scofield said.
Last year’s full Clark Street closure didn’t happen until mid-July, so having an extended outdoor seating area this early in the year “is definitely a bonus,” Scofield added.
The sidewalk and curb lane space should give The Smith an extra 10 to 16 tables, far fewer than the 30 to 40 additional tables it had last year when the full street was closed to vehicle traffic. That difference isn’t expected to make too much of a dent in overall business, though, Scofield added.
Despite the new rules, The Smith is still hoping the city will expand outdoor seating later this summer, as it did last year after the NASCAR race in July.
“It was awesome for the neighborhood,” Scofield said. “It brought the right kind of people to the neighborhood that were having fun and spending money, so I think it was just an overall positive vibe in the summer for the city.”
Ald. Brendan Reilly (42nd), whose ward includes the stretch of Clark Street, did not immediately respond to a request to comment on the announcement.
A survey last year by Reilly of more than 3,000 residents in the ward found at least 80% were strongly in favor of the street closure.

Moez Megji and Karim Megji, the father-and-son hospitality duo behind a slew of restaurants including Wood & Water in Sherman Oaks and Zin Bistro Americana in Westlake Village, as well as now-closed spots Fins Creekside in Calabasas and the Gallery in Westlake Village, quietly opened their latest project, Chelsea , in Santa Monica earlier this month at 2460 Wilshire Boulevard. The new restaurant’s menu draws inspiration from the London neighborhood where Moez lived for a time as a child, incorporating flavors from India, East Africa, and beyond.
Behind the stoves is chef de cuisine Manolo Espejel, preparing dishes like harissa lamb tartare with chive oil and crispy polenta, naan bread with raita and chile sauce, and tikka masala fried chicken with garlic mashed potatoes and sauteed kale. Wines, beers, and cocktails are available to drink. (Full food and beverage menus are below.) Designer Hema Persad revamped the former Grammercy space to incorporate Chelsea’s characteristic colors, textures, patterns, and prints, according to a representative.
Chelsea is open Sunday, Tuesday, and Wednesday from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., and Thursday through Saturday from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Hidden Gem! One of the best – if not the best – culinary options in Belmar. The menu while limited is top quality, as are the unique cocktail selections. Decor is tasteful and service is with a smile.

Everything was amazing!! The service was excellent, the food was great and we can’t wait to go back! A new hidden gem with delicious craft cocktails and dinner!
One of the best spots for quality food in Belmar, and perhaps the whole Shore. Definitely a hidden gem. Must check it out.
– OpenTable Diner
Creative menu and very nice team. We sat at the bar by the open kitchen and the staff could not have been nicer. They all looked to be happy working there and it came through in the service. Food was excellent and seasonal cocktails were a treat. More people need to visit this restaurant. It is a hidden gem.
Great venue. We arrived for the new Fall menu. My wife really enjoyed the veggie empanadas. I had the veal and it was delicious! The brussels and carrots were a great appetizer. My favorite was the Early Bird cocktail. Perfect fall drink!!! We will definitely be back. With friends.
Fourth time at 801 Craft Kitchen. Excellent! The staff is super kind and friendly and the food probably the best in the area hands down! Do not pass up an opportunity to have a meal there!

The $5 McDonald's meal is making a grand comeback in June — but only for a month
- McDonald's plans to launch a limited-time $5 meal.
- In first-quarter earnings, the company's leadership highlighted how inflation has affected customers.
- Other fast food chains are also worried about affordability.
McDonald's is looking to launch a $5 meal in the US in a move to bring back price-sensitive customers .
The meal includes four items, people familiar with the matter told Bloomberg and Restaurant Business . Customers would choose between two of the chain's signature burgers — a McChicken or a McDouble — and get four-piece McNuggets, fries , and a drink. The $5 promotion would last for a month, Bloomberg reported.
The deal will start on June 25, The Wall Street Journal and other outlets reported.
The discussions about the new deal come three weeks after the fast food giant's first-quarter earnings call, where leadership highlighted how customers are increasingly price-sensitive.
"I think affordability is clearly an area where consumer expectations are heightened," McDonald's chief financial officer Ian Borden said on the call. "Obviously, they're getting hit ," by inflation, he added.
The company previewed a value meal on the earnings call without any specifics. CEO Chris Kempczinski said McDonald's has local value meals around the US, but no standard national offering like competitors do.

A $5 meal would be a stark drop from current prices, especially in higher-cost cities, according to a Business Insider analysis.
A meal consisting of the same four items — a McChicken, fries, a drink, and four-piece chicken nuggets — costs $18.26 in downtown New York City. In downtown San Francisco, the McChicken version costs $16.15, and the burger variant costs $17.75.
The new bundle would be priced lower than a Happy Meal, which starts at $6.39 in downtown Manhattan.
The company's stock has fallen about 7% year-to-date as investors worry about rising costs and intensifying fast-food competition.
Fast-food chains across the US are grappling with fewer orders from customers who no longer find their meals affordable. Wendy's, Shake Shack , Starbucks and Burger King parent Restaurant Brands International have all said in their latest earnings call that they will exercise caution on prices.
"We're going to stay careful on pricing," Gunther Plosch, Wendy's CFO, said in its earnings call earlier this month. "I don't think we're going to get too greedy."
Fast-food giants have also been hit by California's new minimum $20 hourly wage for limited-service restaurants. Franchisees that have raised prices are worried they may lose customers to sit-in dining chains like Chili's and Applebee's , which are not subject to the wage hike.
McDonald's did not respond to an immediate request for comment sent outside standard business hours.
