No Doubt, Not a Typical Singing Nun

the divine sister

By Ben Brantley

  • Sept. 22, 2010

We all have our own ideas of heaven. For some, it’s white clouds and harps; for others, an eternal shore of silence. But perhaps you’re one of those souls (and I know you’re out there) who imagine an endless swirl of beautifully bad old movies — a place where the acting is always overripe, the plots as thick as oatmeal and the taste level close to the gutter. If this describes you, paradise awaits you, friend, just south of Houston Street.

Cue the “Hallelujah” chorus. Charles Busch has put on a nun’s habit and is talking to God, from whom he has evidently received blessed counsel. “The Divine Sister,” his new comedy at the SoHo Playhouse, finds Mr. Busch returned to peak form. This gleefully twisted tale of the secret lives of nuns — in which the playwright doubles as leading lady — is Mr. Busch’s freshest, funniest work in years, perhaps decades.

Mr. Busch might argue that all he has done is revive the formula that made him famous a quarter of a century ago, when his “Vampire Lesbians of Sodom” became a must-have downtown ticket. Since then, he has written a hit mainstream Broadway comedy ( “The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife” ) and experimented erratically with costume drama (“Queen Amarantha”) and comic meditations on truth versus fiction ( “The Third Story” ).

But Mr. Busch should never undervalue what he does best: transforming vintage-movie love into irreverently reverent theater, in which affection and subversion live in happy, bawdy harmony. Sure, New York has known a hefty share of Hollywood-inspired drag queens. But few have matched Mr. Busch in packing decades of celluloid dreams into an hour or two of stage satire.

As “The Divine Sister” reminds us, Mr. Busch doesn’t do single-note send-ups. Directed by his frequent collaborator Carl Andress and featuring a priceless Julie Halston and Alison Fraser, this show is ostensibly a naughty riff on wholesome mid-1960s fare like “The Trouble With Angels” and “The Singing Nun.” These were aggressively family-oriented films in which women in wimples were wise and cute and unthreatening, bulwarks of wholesomeness in a druggy, sex-crazed era.

Certainly the Mother Superior of St. Veronica’s convent school is aware of her place in history. “My dear, we are living in a time of great social change,” says the Mother Superior, who is portrayed, of course, by Mr. Busch. “We must do everything in our power to stop it.”

Mr. Busch would seem to be basing his portrait on late-career Rosalind Russell, who starred in “The Trouble With Angels” and its sequel. His face a mask of warm condescension, his diction as plummy as damson preserves, Mr. Busch does evoke the holier-than-thou graciousness into which Russell evolved. But wait. Before Russell was a grande dame, she was just a dame, as Mr. Busch well remembers.

So it turns out that before she took the veil, our Mother Superior had a life as a girl reporter, who bears a distinct resemblance to Hildy Johnson, the ace journalist played by Russell in the wonderful Howard Hawks film “His Girl Friday.” Flashback! There’s the beloved M.S. when she was still sassy Susan of The Daily Graphic, swapping machine-gun dialogue as foreplay with a fellow reporter (the terrific Jonathan Walker). The rapid, tongue-twisting pace here matches the exhilarating, exhausting tempo of Hawks’s film.

Whew! No wonder Susie graduated to a life of contemplation in a nun’s habit (also so conveniently flattering to an older gal’s chin-line and waist-line). But serenity will prove elusive at St. Veronica’s. Mother Superior isn’t the only one on the premises with a past. There’s a bulging roster of Sisters with Secrets: Sister Acacius (Ms. Halston), the hearty convent wrestling coach; Sister Walburga (a scrumptiously vulpine Ms. Fraser), a recent transplant from Berlin; and the fresh-faced postulant, Agnes (the delightful Amy Rutberg).

The unraveling of those secrets involves enough plot threads to weave a center-hall tapestry. It’s a process that allows Mr. Busch to summon a host of cultural references to ecumenically themed entertainments. We segue from the sunny environs of “The Singing Nun” and “The Sound of Music” (Mother Superior strums a guitar and lip syncs inspiringly) and older happy-nun movies (“The Bells of St. Mary’s”) to the shadows of nun noir cinema and theater (Michael Powell’s “Black Narcissus” and the convent mysteries “Agnes of God” and “Doubt”).

Along the way, there are expressive nods to Mrs. Venable’s florid God-renouncing speech from “Suddenly, Last Summer” (impeccably delivered by Jennifer Van Dyck as the town’s rich resident atheist) and the mazelike convolutions of “The Da Vinci Code” and “The Name of the Rose.” (Yes, there’s a sinister monk on board, too, played by Mr. Walker.)

These allusions add up to something more than a pop-fizzy crossword puzzle. Within the silliness lies a canny awareness of how mass culture has exploited our suspicions of those who live in religious orders. What are these people hiding behind their habits and cassocks and cloister walls? The lucrative career of the novelist Dan Brown is all the evidence you need that this fascination hasn’t died.

Of course, you don’t have to think along such lofty lines to appreciate “The Divine Sister.” It is also camp vaudeville of a very high (or high-low) order, a mixture of Rabelaisian crudeness and stylistic flourishes, of a wide-eyed fan’s innocence and a connoisseur’s savvy. This is evident in the show’s cheerfully wicked sets (by B. T. Whitehill) and costumes (by Fabio Toblini) and, above all, the performances.

Ms. Halston, who has a long history with Mr. Busch, is delivering a master class in the comic art of listening. But all the women here demonstrate that you don’t have to be a man to be a first-class female impersonator. Mr. Busch has the most, er, catholic range, conjuring up a phalanx of wimple-wearing heroines, past and present: Deborah Kerr, Ingrid Bergman, Loretta Young and a certain great contemporary stage star who is returning to Broadway this season (in “Mrs. Warren’s Profession”) and won a Tony for playing a Mother Superior five years ago:

Get thee to Mr. Busch’s nunnery, Cherry Jones. When you hear him pronounce the word “doubt,” you will learn that you have joined that select, illustrious pantheon of actresses worthy of this spoofmeister’s mimicry.

A religious sister in theology’s halls of power

By Sr. Francine-Marie Cooper, ISSM

“All of my predecessors were priests and bishops,” Sr. M. Isabell explained with a smile. The Schoenstatt Sister of Mary was referring to her appointment as President of the Catholic Institute of Sydney, Australia, the country’s only ecclesiastical faculty, which confers Pontifical degrees in Sacred Theology. The faculty was established in 1954 for Australia, New Zealand and Oceania.

Sr. M. Isabell Naumann, a German-born member of the Secular Institute of the Schoenstatt Sisters of Mary (ISSM), was appointed President of the Catholic Institute of Sydney in 2018 by Archbishop Anthony Fisher, OP.

Prior to her appointment, Sr. M. Isabell worked for many years as professor at the Catholic Institute of Sydney. Her appointment as president of the Institute still came as a surprise.

In an interview with Vatican News, Sr. M. Isabell said, “There are not too many women who lead ecclesiastical faculties or universities. Ours goes back to the 1880s, and it became an ecclesiastical faculty in 1956. All of my predecessors were priests and bishops.”

Three years after her appointment as President of the Catholic Institute of Sydney, in October 2021, Sr. M. Isabell was called by Pope Francis to be a member of the International Theological Commission (ITC).

Handling questions of major importance to the Church

The task of the ITC is to help the Holy See, especially the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, examine doctrinal questions of major importance.

The members are nominated by the Holy Father for five years after having been proposed by the Cardinal Prefect of the Dicastery and after consultation with the Bishops’ Conferences.

Sr. M. Isabell is one of the few women in the Commission. “We are only five women, and we are all together a group of 29,” she said.

Sr. M. Isabell Naumann meeting Pope Francis in November 2017

The womanly way of thinking and approaching a topic

In her opinion, there should be a stronger presence of women in such commissions like the ITC. She finds this important, “so that you have more complementary thinking.”

“It is very important because we might deal with the same topic, but you have different ways of approaching the topic, and in my eyes that is a very important complement, and that needs to come together when you deal with anything in theology,” she explained, expressing her hope that there will be more women on such commissions in future.

Pope Francis often stresses the importance of woman and their role within the Church.

In an address delivered to the ITC on November 30, 2023, he said, “Women have a capacity for theological reflection that is different to that of us men. The Church is woman. And if we do not know what a woman is, what the theology of a woman is, we will never understand what the Church is.”

The Pope then added, “And this is a task that I ask of you, please. To make the Church less masculine.”

Having worked in ecclesial circles for many years, Sr. Isabell has come to appreciate the unique contribution that women have to give to the Church.

The Marian Charism of the community of the Schoenstatt Sisters of Mary, to which Sr. Isabell belongs, places a particular emphasis on helping women embrace and develop their unique feminine identity and thus enrich society and the Church.

In her work in education, administration and academic research for the Church, the German-born sister sees a concrete way of living her community’s charism and contributing to the feminine or Marian aspect within the Church.

Importance of women in priestly formation

Before becoming president of the Catholic Institute of Sydney, the Schoenstatt Sister of Mary worked for eleven years as dean of studies in the seminary.

“I was actually the first woman dean of studies in a seminary (the Good Shepherd Seminary in Sydney) here in Australia. Normally, it's not a woman,” she said.

She spoke of the particular importance of having women involved in the formation of priests. “That was very important,” she added, “because when it came to decision making: ‘does this candidate really have a calling?’ Men would often approach it from a particular side, but women, because we are more relational, we have a different way of looking at a person,” she explained. “And in my experience, that was a very healthy and a very sound way of coming to a decision.”

Sr. M. Isabell summed up her experience saying, “I could see how important it is that whenever we deal with education, with anything that has to do with the human person, you need to have both the masculine and the feminine way of thinking represented.”

The Gullspång Miracle

World Premiere

The gullspång miracle, documentary competition, women, documentary, mystery.

Norwegian sisters Kari and May are devout in their religious convictions — to the degree that they perceive divine signs all around them. When May visits Kari in Sweden and decides to buy an apartment in the area to be closer to her, both sisters end up experiencing a divine sign at one particular apartment that prompts them to buy it. However, once they convene to buy it, they witness a shocking revelation that turns their lives upside down: the seller looks identical to their older sister Astrid, who committed suicide some thirty years before. What’s even more unusual: Olaug, the seller of the apartment, used to go by “Lita,” the same distinctive nickname as Kari and May’s deceased sister.

The sisters recruit director Maria Fredriksson to pursue these unusual circumstances, and the filmmaker is thrust into uncovering secrets and eerie mysteries of a bizarre family story. Fredriksson’s The Gullspång Miracle is a mesmerizing and consistently surprising documentary that epitomizes the ‘stranger than fiction’ narrative. Replete with comically awkward situations and one engrossing revelation after another, the film is a deft exploration of identity and the consequences of stubborn beliefs.—Jose Rodriguez

Visita Iglesia 2024: Adoration Convent of Divine Peace Chapel (Pink Sisters Chapel)

C EBU CITY, Philippines — In the Philippines, the Lent Season is commonly observed as a time to look into one’s self and open the heart to develop a stronger relationship with God.

Among the many traditions Filipinos follow every Lent Season is the Visit Iglesia.

For a significant number of devotees, it has become an integral part of their Holy Week observation to visit various different churches and chapels with family and friends.

This year for the Holy Week 2024,  CDN Digital once again visited a number of religious places of worship in Cebu to help you discover more about the churches where you can reflect and repent.

One of these is a small chapel located just by the roadside along A.S Fortuna Street in Barangay Banilad, Mandaue City.

Holy Week traditions: What is Visita Iglesia?

Holy Week 2024: Heritage churches beckon for ‘Visita Iglesia’

After entering a green gate, guests are welcomed into the Adoration Convent of Divine Peace Chapel also locally known as the Pink Sisters chapel.

Surrounded by trees and flowers, this small chapel may not be known by many but it is beloved by locals as the perfect place to reflect in peace and quiet.

The convent belongs to a German congregation called the Sisters Servants of the Holy Spirit and Perpetual Adoration.

Origin of Pink Sisters Chapel in Cebu

In an interview with CDN Digital, one of the nuns in the chapel, Sister Maria, shared that they had been in the area for around 50 years.

She also said that the congregation’s humble beginnings could be traced back to the village of Steyl, Holland.

The Holy Spirit Adoration Sisters (SSpSAp i.e. Congregatio Servarum Spiritus Sancti de Adoratione perpetua) was founded by a German diocesan priest, Saint Arnold Janssen on December 8, 1896.

This was done with the assistance of Mother Mary Michael, its first Superior General.

After the creation of the Mission Congregation of the Servants of the Holy Spirit, Saint Arnold founded the Holy Spirit of Perpetual Adoration, otherwise known as the Holy Spirit Adoration Sisters.

As missionaries traveled to different countries to spread the word, the congregation had built two prosperous convents in the Philippines by 1965.

None of them, however, was in Cebu. In Cebu where Magellan first planted the Christian cross upon his arrival to the province in 1521 and where there are a significant number of Catholics.

Fortunately, plans were conducted to build a convent after a visit by Mother Mary Aurora to Cebu in early 1970.

During the celebration of the 25th anniversary of Cardinal Rosales’ episcopal ordination in 1971, the cornerstone of the new Adoration Chapel and Convent of Divine Peace was arranged.

However, it could be more than a year before the completed chapel was inaugurated on July 27, 1974.

In their official website, the chapel is described as “a gathering point of both individuals and groups to honor our Eucharistic Lord in the liturgy and in para-liturgical services, as well as in the annual Eucharistic Festival for nine days before the Solemnity of Corpus Christi, which draws fervent overflow crowds.”

Upon entering the gate, the area has a wide concrete parking space surrounded by well-maintained trees and bushes.

Sister Maria explained that the church was purposely built to have an area showcasing the beauty of nature as it aids in their adoration.

“Usually, our convent is built with gardens because we are contemplatives. So the nature it affords us to contemplate more on God. But it’s more in the Adoration,” she stated.

Furthermore, the refreshing view allows better contemplation for the nuns who are unable to go out of the convent.

Visita Iglesia 2024: Archdiocesan Shrine of San Nicolas de Tolentino Parish

Visita Iglesia 2024: San Fernando Rey Parish Church in Liloan

The simple design of the chapel has remained over the years with only a few renovations done on the building for an air of modernity.

With the outside featuring greenery, the doors by the walls of the chapel are usually opened giving the inside an airy cool atmosphere.

While the chapel may be smaller compared to other churches in the city, the place offers a serene vibe that is quiet despite being in a busy area.

The altar, however, is separated by a railing. This serves as a barrier for the nuns who regularly come to pray from the outside world, according to Sister Maria.

Inside the chapel, there are also three religious statues placed facing the altar.

“It represented the three saints. One saint of Cebu (San Pedro Calungsod), the other is our son founder (St. Arnold Janssen), the other is another saint from our congregation (St. Joseph Freinademetz), said Sister Maria.

Another notable feature of this chapel is that it is the home of the “Pink Sisters,” who wear bold pink habits instead of the traditional and unassuming black and white.

Sister Maria said that the nuns in the convent living a serene life wear the color pink because it symbolizes love.

“Because we are dedicated to the Holy Spirit. And the Holy Spirit is the God of Love. So our founder, St. Arnold Jensen, chose the pink color. Pink represents love,” she said.

“We are separated. We belong to the cloistered. The blue are the active ones. They are the Holy Spirit Missionary Sisters. And then the SVDs, they have the school…They are the priests and brothers,” said Sister Maria.

While living a cloistered life inside the convent, the 16 Pink Sisters in Mandaue City follow a daily routine of worship, pouring faith into every detail of their day.

“We pray 24 hours daily. We have adoration in the morning and in the evening. So it’s round the clock. At night, we have one hour and 30 minutes adoration for each sister,” she said.

“We are separated from the world. But we pray for the whole world,” said Sister Maria.

With the eucharistic adoration as their apostolate, masses are celebrated every day at 6:30 a.m. and on Sundays: 7:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.

Now, the congregation has a total of 6 convents in the country. Other than Cebu, these are located in Manila, Tagaytay, Baguio, Aklan, Davao.

“We are already 50 years here in Cebu. We celebrated our golden anniversary last June,” added Sister Maria.

For the upcoming Holy Week, the convent has their own activities scheduled, including spiritual conferences.

Sister Maria invited the public to visit the chapel and take part in their observation of the Lenten season.

“Everybody is invited…We are inviting people to come to adore Jesus. Actually this is the Holy Trinity in the blessed sacrament,” she said.
