The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) , Bangalore, was started in 1909 and is considered among the finest institutes of its kind in India today. ePrints@IISc, the open access repository of IISc research publications was established towards the end of 2002 using EPrints.org software. It has over 2000 research publications, is growing steadily and is accessed significantly from around the world today. Recently need was felt for setting up an ETD repository service for IISc. We decided to use DSapce repository software, given the recent positive experiences with this software for such services. We set up a prototype repository service to fac ilitate formulation of requirements for the production service and also address technical issues. Prototype helped us to obtain feedback from the IISc e-resources advisory committee and the concerned administrative section dealing with theses submissions and approvals. This led to identification of several key requirements for the production ETD s...

Proceedings: Indian Library Association

Dp Tripathi , Bhojaraju Gunjal , D. Pradhan

In academic/research institutions, the Institutional Repositories (IR) is the primary source to archive scholarly communication containing data, information, photographs and results of valuable research. These are vital and robust systems that allow institutions to preserve and maintain their digital documents and allow for interaction and collaboration among users in the different institutions. There are numbers of digital library software available as "Open Source" as well as "Proprietary". The open source software helps the libraries especially in eliminating vendor lock-in and reducing the cost with greater flexibility. These software are generally available free of cost with the capability to capture, store, index, preserve and redistribute all scholarly research materials in digital formats. This paper deals with open source software (OSS) solutions especially DSpace, EPrints, Greenstone, Fedora projects and others for establishing institutional repository (IR). These OSS have developed a system that allows users to use and submit the contents for IR, and also allows the administrators to organize, configure and customize the IR accordingly to the requirements. The primary attempt of this paper is to discuss the implementation of IR with special reference to Odiya Books & Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETDs) in Central Library of National Institute of Technology Rourkela (NITR). An attempt has been made to showcase the implementations of various OSS tools and usage ranking of these websites with the help of screenshots.

Making the erudite publications accessible through open access and making it more visible to a wider range of audiences across the globe with the help of World Wide Web is the new edged mantra for scholarly communication. This study was undertaken with an attempt to give an abridgment of ETD repositories in India. The chief objective of the study is to find out the development and current status of Indian ETD repositories. The current study depicts the importance of ETD Repositories in the technology driven era especially in developing countries like India. It was found that a number of ETD repositories are coming up and a few among them shows a promising future. The study shows that maximum number of Indian ETD repositories has adopted the open source software Dspace for building up the repositories and Shodhganga is leading in terms of the records contained in the ETD repository

ETDs can contain non-text elements such as multimedia, sound, video, and hypertext links. This enables scholars worldwide to locate, search, and download ETDs. For most scholars, the the Ph.D thesis and M.phil dissertations are the first major work of scholarship they produce. To make those works more readily available to other scholars, as well as to save money, many universities and libraries are now making digitized (or electronic) versions available. The Shodhganga@INFLIBNET is set-up using open source digital repository software called DSpace developed by MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) in partnership between Hewlett- Packard (HP). The DSpace uses internationally recognized protocols and interoperability standards. Shodhganga provides a platform for research scholars to deposit their Ph.D. theses and make it available to the entire scholarly community in open access. An attempt has been made to determine the present status of participating Indian Universities in Shodganga.

Most of the dissertations from Indian universities are prepared in Indian languages. Hence without digital library packages that can process Indian scripts, full text retrieval or piracy checking will not be possible. Existing popular international packages can process only scripts of international languages. Packages that can process Indian local scripts can be developed only indigenously. The only successfully tested package in this respect is Nithya D Arch, the software used for digitizing PhD theses of Mahatma Gandhi University, Kerala. The language technology adopted in this package is one of the key factors that can contribute to Open Access and Piracy Checking in Indian research environment. It is a unique venture among the initiatives for Open Access and quality control of research in Indian scenario. This paper evaluates the status of ETD archives in India in the above context with special reference to Mahatma Gandhi University’s open access digital archive of PhD Theses.

An institutional repository is an online resource for the storing in digital form of academic materials, such as thesis, dissertations and research articles, on behalf of a university or other institution. This paper focuses on the requirements, functions and use of digital preservation in an institutional repository context. The paper highlights on various feature and importance of both Institutional Digital Repository and Open Source Digital Library Software that is DSpace. The Central Library IIT, Kharagpur uses open sources digital library software namely DSpace. The IDR of Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IITKGP) collects preserves and makes available in digital format of the scholarly output of IIT Kharagpur community. Its interface provides for an easy self-archiving by faculty, and organizes the documents in logical, easily retrieved fashion.

Parthasarathi Mukhopadhyay , Dr Prosenjit Sarkar

This paper discusses designing an open source software based library discovery system for full-text ETD retrieval on the basis of a cataloguing framework developed by using available global standards and best practices in the domain of theses cataloguing. The purpose of this prototype framework is to provide a single-window search and retrieval system for end users for discovering ETD at metadata level and at full-text level. The prototype framework is based on three-layer architecture with Koha ILS as backend metadata provider, Apache-Tika as full-text extractor and VuFind as discovery system. A MARC-21 bibliographic format, especially designed to handle TDs, is working as data handler mechanism in Koha ILS and the harvester of VuFind is tuned to fetch bibliographic data related to ETD in marcxml format. The user interface of VuFind is also configured to support accessing ETDs from global-scale services like NDLTD, OATD, IndCat, ShodhGanga etc. apart from the local level ETD collection in order to provide an all-in-one search interface for users.

Journal of Advancements in Library Sciences

Open sources are commonly used in libraries and information centers across the globe. As the libraries have different natures and services being provided, they are facing different challenges in implementing and adopting open sources like DSpace, Koha, Greenstone, and so on. These open sources are very popular among Library and Information Science professionals in the world for rendering automation and network-based services to the users' community. While implementing or installing of DSpace software, professionals face many challenges associated with operating systems, compatibility with existing hardware and software being used, application of DSpace, using the latest versions of the operating system, and open source. With their in-depth knowledge and practical experience implementing these sources in many libraries in India, both authors have been facing and rectifying various issues of implementation of these sources and have been giving solutions to the challenges being faced. With the applications of the latest versions of these open sources at all the libraries of the Poornima Group of Institutions, authors have been practicing finding the best solutions to the challenges. Through this article, solutions have been shared that are based on practical experience.
