There are also more chances for conflict, but also more chances for love and laughter. In many ways, a big family is like a microcosm of the world.

It can be difficult to manage, but it’s also full of potential.

Technically speaking, big often refers to the physical size of an object, such as a big house, or big television. Big can also refer to something that is weighty and important (milestone moments in life are often considered “big” moments).

Large usually only refers to the physical size of something and is often used less often than “big”. Both terms are used interchangeably for the most part.

This being said, you can call a family a “big family” or a “large family” without being wrong.

What’s It Like Having a Big Family?

As someone who comes from a large family (I’m the oldest of four siblings), I can tell you that there are many advantages to a big family!

Of course, just like everything, there are some possible disadvantages, too. Let’s talk through a few of the main advantages and disadvantages of a big family…

Advantages of a Big Family

Imagine waking up to the sound of giggles and cheerful talks (well, on the good days only).

This is the coziness a family brings to your life by making you feel relevant, loved, and cherished.

But besides the love-filled relations a family usually consists of, here are some often overlooked advantages of big families: 

There Is Always Someone To Spend Time With

Cozy family gatherings around the dinner table, late-night talks with your siblings while sharing a bed on road trips – are just some of the priceless moments that can only be experienced when living in a big happy family.

Unlike living alone or with roommates, you always have someone to spend time with and talk to when living in a big happy family.

Even though arguments are bound to happen between siblings or between parents and children, there is always a sense of love and togetherness in a big happy family.

In tough times, family members will rally around each other and offer support, and in good times, everyone can enjoy each other’s company.

There is Built-In Support and Assistance

One of the biggest plus points of big families is the sense of support and community that comes from being surrounded by loved ones.

In a big family, there is always someone to lend a hand with childcare, cooking, errands, or any other need. Members of a large family are also quick to offer emotional support during tough times.

Knowing that you have such a strong network of people to rely on can be a great source of comfort and strength. 

Children in Larger Families Learn to Share 

In today’s world, it’s not uncommon for children to grow up in small families.

With only one or two siblings, they may never learn the essential life lessons that come from sharing.

However, children who grow up in larger families often have different experiences. From an early age, they learn to share everything from toys to parents’ attention.

Sure, big families look great in pictures and their festive times also look fun-filled.

But, it’s not always hunky-dory, especially when there are financial issues and personality clashes.

So, it’s only fair to discuss the major downsides of big families.  

Less One-On-One Time For Each Child With Parents

In families with several children, it’s not uncommon for each parent to feel stretched thin.

As a result, each child may have less one-on-one time with their mom or dad. While this can be tough on kids, it’s important to remember that all families are different, and there is no one “right” way to parent.

In fact, research has shown that children in large families often benefit from having a wide social network and developing independent skills at an early age.

Of course, every child is different, and some may thrive with more one-on-one attention. But ultimately, it’s up to each family to find what works best for them.

It’s More Expensive To Support A Large Family

What is an Extended Family

In short, an extended family is a type of family that extends beyond the nuclear family (a nuclear family usually consists of parents, plus the natural children of those parents living together in a household).

An extended family can include grandparents, aunts, uncles, and other relatives. These relatives all live either in one household together, or nearby.

Extended family units are more common in some parts of the world than others.

You are more likely to see them in areas such as Asia, Southern Europe and Africa, and less likely to have them in North America and Northern Europe.

Extended Family Advantages and Disadvantages

Extended families can be complex, with many advantages and disadvantages.

One advantage is financial. It’s economically beneficial to all when families can live under the same roof and share expenses.

Extended families can also help each other out with childcare, chores, cooking and other household tasks.

Also, extended families often share close bonds as well as cultural values, promoting a tight knit family to weather the ups and downs of life with.

One of the big disadvantages of extended family situations is that there is often a lack of independence.

Because family members depend so highly on each other, it can be hard to break away, be independent and forge your own path.

Many believe that the advantages of extended families outweigh the disadvantages.

Life in a big family is usually full of love, laughter, and chaos. There are always people around to give hugs and lend a helping hand.

However, there can also be a lot of noise, arguments, and confusion.

With so many people living under one roof, it’s important to have good communication and organizational skills.

9 Overlooked Advantages of Having a Big Family

I wouldn’t say that having three or more kids is easy, but there are many advantages of having a big family. I think some of these can go overlooked when people gape and gasp at the gaggle of children you have.

I wanted to give some love to big families with this post and share some of my favorite things about having a big family. Yes, we have crazy busy lives. They are also filled with so much joy.

I was an only child growing up, so this big family business is new to me. It’s been a delight to experience. Whether you have a brood of your own or are considering future family size, I hope you’ll enjoy reading about the advantages of having a big family.

You can even send the article to doubting family members who scoff and say, “You’re pregnant again? Don’t you know how that happens?”

While this post focuses on the advantages of having a big family, I’ve also written a more well-rounded post about what it’s like having four kids .

Today, big families aren’t the norm. There has been a steady decline in US birth rates since the end of the baby boom in the 1960s. However, a recent survey found that four in ten US adults think that three or more children is the ideal family size, representing an uptick from previous years.

Let’s see what all the fuss is about…

Advantages of Having a Big Family

1. we laugh a lot.

There’s always something silly going on in our house. From the 2 year-old loudly announcing her bowel movements to the teenager sharing funny videos, there are plenty of opportunities for laughter.

Sometimes we just laugh at the craziness that ensues in our household. (It’s either that or we might go a little batty.)

My kids are witty and love to crack a joke at any opportunity. We’ll often recount funny stories from their earlier years or from our own childhoods, which they love to hear.

Most of all, I love to hear my kids laughing and having fun together (even the giggles from their room past bedtime).

2. You’re Never Lonely

Growing up an only child, I remember the loneliness of being the only kid in the house. When I was in preschool, I would make up imaginary siblings and tell my teachers about them, much to my mother’s confusion.

Don’t get me wrong, I had a wonderful childhood and benefited from my parents’ undivided attention. It could just be lonely sometimes.

In a big family, you rarely spend time alone unless you are making a point to do so. You don’t have to beg your parents to play a board game with you or jump in the pool with you. It’s easy to just grab a sibling and go have fun.

When I’m feeling tired or low, one of my little ones will give me a hug or a snuggle. Feeling lonely can easily be remedied if it ever occurs.

When our children are ever separated from each other, they talk about how much they miss each other. It’s clear they have a strong bond.

3. You Worry Less

Sure, as a parent there will always be worries. It’s not easy being responsible for lives that you cherish more than your own.

But one of the advantages of having a big family is you worry less about the little stuff. By the second or third kid, you’ve reached your parenting stride. You feel more at ease and know that most things are going to work out just fine.

You don’t question every decision or have to look up expert advice at every turn.

The house is babyproofed and you’ve hopefully lowered your standards for housekeeping so you’re not constantly stressed.

You’ve realized that children can be more independent than you’d expect and they’re actually pretty resilient little beings. It’s hard to describe the feeling, but it is a lot more relaxed style of parenting.

4. We Learn From Each Other

It’s great to see the older kids teaching the younger kids things. They both get so much out of it. One of my toddler’s favorite things is having an older sibling read her a book. Of course, they also love to teach her funny new phrases.

They can help each other with their math homework. And what childhood would be complete without learning how to make an armpit fart from your sibling?

As much as my kids learn from each other, I’m also amazed at how much I still learn from all of them. They each have unique interests that are always evolving.

They love to delve into new subjects and share their knowledge with the family. It reminds me how much their little minds are growing all the time.

5. Teaches Teamwork

With six people in our household, we’ve had to learn to work together to get things done. Cleaning up in particular is a family affair. The job gets a lot easier when everyone pitches in.

Siblings who share a room must cooperate to pick it up together.

When we’re getting ready to go somewhere, everyone lends a hand to gather what we need and corral the littler ones to the car. Our movements require a group effort because mom and dad don’t have enough hands.

Loading and unloading the car for vacations or trips to the grocery store requires all hands on deck because more people means more stuff to haul. It’s not as much of a burden when we all chip in.

6. Teaches Sharing

Growing up, I’d never shared a room with anyone until college. Many kids in big families share a room at some point during their childhood. There’s some evidence to suggest that sharing a room can be a positive experience and help kids develop skills like emotional intelligence and conflict management.

When there are a few kids or more, there won’t be enough televisions, video game systems, etc. to go around. It becomes a fact of life that things have to be shared. I think this helps with interactions with friends, classmates, and probably others in the future.

Our kids are used to hand-me-downs and sharing french fries with their brother. Sharing is engrained from an early age, and they make the best of it.

7. Family Always Has Your Back

While we haven’t had any iconic playground fights with one sibling sticking up for another, they do frequently stand up for each other in little ways. If someone is feeling hurt or left out, they’ll make an attempt to remedy the situation.

If a sibling is scared or sick, they will try to soothe them, offering kind words and things that might help such as favorite stuffed animals.

My oldest in particular is always looking out for his littler siblings, as much as they drive him crazy sometimes. He goes into protector mode over our toddler.

I know they would go to bat for each other if ever a need arose, and I’m always telling them how important it is to always be there for each other.

One of the reasons I wanted a big family is having to go through a parent having a long illness alone. If something like that ever happens, I will feel better knowing my kids can lean on each other.

8. Love Is Multiplied

When I was going to have my second child, I worried so much about how I would love them as much as my first. It felt like my heart belonged to my first child, so I wondered what would happen with a second one.

Much to my relief, I quickly realized that your amount of love is not finite, and it multiplies with each subsequent child. I feel so much love for all my children, and I can feel the love they have for each other. Our house is brimming with it.

Everyone doesn’t get along 100% of the time, but the important deep connection of love is always there. Of the advantages of having a big family, this might be the biggest.

9. Watching Generations Grow

One of my greatest joys in life is watching all of my kids’ personalities develop. As I watch them grow into mature humans, I can’t help but think about what things will look like one day when they might have children of their own.

Each of my parents had several siblings, and their family gatherings were always the best. Cousins playing together are some of my fondest childhood memories.

Now I’m creating this shared history with my big family, and one day we’ll hopefully have great family gatherings of our own with generations of love to share.

Is a Big Family Right for You?

I’m not here to convince anyone to have a big family. You should have the size of family that’s right for you and your situation.

The bottom line is one type of family is not better than another. There are pros and cons to all family types. What’s most important is the love and support that’s given.

Personally, I always knew I wanted more than one child, and having a big family ended up being right for me. I wanted to write this article because sometimes big families receive judgment or are viewed as different from the norm. In reality, there’s a lot that’s great about big families.

I have four children (i’m in the UK though) & I absolutely adore it! They are all under 5. 😅 … I also enjoy the funny looks whilst out and when my children are all over the place playing 😂. I am coming from a big family, I have 7 siblings, -3 sisters and 4 brothers - I am the fifth. It was not easy for me, I felt that I was ignored. Today we are all adults - middle age, I feel that my parents did not have enough time to spend with us. All was not Disneyland color. One of the biggest decision married couples face is how many children to add to their family. Some may choose one or two kids, while others may want four or more children.

There are pros and cons to both, but according to a study on happiness in family life, those who are in larger families are happier. Having a large family can be chaotic at times, financially difficult and sometimes overwhelming, but there are some really great benefits to having a full house.

Kids learn how to build relationships.

With several children in the home, siblings always have someone to play (or fight) with on a regular basis. They learn how to get along, bounce back after a disagreement, work together and learn how to share.

These are life skills! How often do we have to do school projects alongside people we don't always get along with? How many times have you been annoyed or frustrated with a coworker? Learning to get along with a variety of personalities, or at least how to be nice in the face of less than desirable circumstances, will help your children be successful in life. It's real world experience from a very young age.

Families learn how to work hard and work together.

In a home with only a couple of children, parents can more easily do all the housework alone. In large families, however, teamwork becomes necessary. Mom or Dad can't do it all alone. Each child has to pitch in to keep the house and family running. Chores get assigned, and everyone works together to get things accomplished.

Knowing how to do simple things like sweeping, vacuuming, washing dishes and cleaning bathrooms are necessary — especially when children move out on their own. I remember watching a reality show once where the main character, who was in her late teens or early twenties, had no idea how to use a broom! So, her mother just did it for her. Kids need to learn how to clean, organize and take care of their own belongings.

The different personalities and skills complement each other and add diversity to family life.

Large families have the advantage of utilizing each family member's strengths in daily life. Kids come with their own personalities and skills. Some are quiet, some loud; some are kind and caring, some bold and independent; some may love music or sports; some kids are culinary gurus, while some may have inventive ideas. Pulling from everyone's skills can make family life more enjoyable and fulfilling.

Utilize this diversity in family problem solving, planning trips or trying to generate ideas. Each unique person will have something new and different to contribute. Not only will each person feel needed and wanted, but they will also each develop a strong sense of self. Each personality can be fun to get to know and love.

Families support each other.

It's nice to know that someone always has your back. Even though kids will fight with each other, they are ready and willing to defend a sibling against bullies or comfort each other after a hard day. Families stick together. They rely on and support one another. It's a perfectly designed support system full of close bonds and love.

Of course, all these great factors need to be cultivated by the parents. Children need guidance and direction to help them learn. Parents will have to correct wrongs and teach children how to treat one another. We largely have a peaceful atmosphere at home. After school, our time is spent on studying, playing and watching television, which of course our mother does not like. Unlike other couples, my mother and father seldom have a fight. In fact, as soon we see an argument brewing up, one of them just withdraws and it is just rare to see a heated conversation between them. This is what I like the most about them as I feel that my parents are so cool. It is only me and brother who love to fight with each other.

However, we know that behind those fights, it is actually our love for each other which binds us together. I just enjoy being at home spending time with my parents and my brother. I just feel how bad it would be when tomorrow I and my brother shall move on for our professional lives and we shall not be able to spend much time together. This is a family value that we cherish so much. I learnt to show love to everybody. Even when we did not have much, my parents will still give to those who are needy. My dad says that the world is like a river, we would eventually flow into one another later and you do not know the future, the person you helped today might eventually be of help to you tomorrow.

This is a value that has been passed from generation to generation in my family. My dad would say that education is the best legacy you can give to a child. My family does everything in their capacity for you to get a sound and benefitting education. The acquisition of knowledge is also quite important. The things they do even subconsciously say otherwise. I remember a day in elementary school, I was being bullied a boy in class. On this particular day, he hit me. Unknowing to me, my sister heard about it and she beat the boy and made him apologise to me, I felt so happy that day because I had someone who had my back.

My brother is one of the best gifts I have received. He is the last child and this gives him an opportunity to be annoying if you know what I mean. He is joyful and always ready to heed correction. There was this day, I heard him bragging to his friends about how awesome I am, and I was the happiest that day.

1. Love: love is the most important thing we need for our bonds as a family to improve. When we love the members in our family, we will also be able to know all about privacy, intimacy, caring, belonging and sharing. When there is love in a family, the family will prosper.

2. Loyalty: loyalty is something that comes as a result of love. Family members should stay devoted to each other. It is important that we are able to count on our family to have our back anytime we are facing problems.

The importance of family can never be overstated even though we live in a different time now and our attitudes to relationships, marriage and what a family should be has changed. The family is something that we need to help share our problems and be there for us anytime we have issues. A lot of the things that were not acceptable in the past and we now see as normal. Even with all the changes that the society has effected on our family system, the family still remains the major foundation of our society and this will remain the same.

My family is the best gift I have got. A family can be simply said to mean a social group of different people in our society that includes one or more parents and also their children. In a family, every member of the family commits to other members of the family in a mutual relationship. A family is a very important unit and the smallest unit in the society. A family whether a big one or a small one is of very great importance and use to all of its members and is believed to be the unit of our society that is strongest because the society is formed from the coming together and culmination of various families.

In many cultures, the family serves a child’s first school where the child learns all about their traditions and cultures more importantly learn about all the rudimentary values in life. A family is very essential in the teaching of healthy habits and good manners to all the members of the family. It gives the members of the family the opportunity to become people with better character in our society. I feel very lucky to be born into a small and lovely family; I learnt a lot of things from my family.

I am from a middle class and average family with six members (my father, my mother, my grandmother, my grandfather, my younger brother and me). My grandfather is the head of the family and we all respect and listen to him. He is really wise and tries to advise each and every one of us using his many life experiences. He has been involved in many interesting and adventurous activities that he tells me about all the time. Most of the time, he has the final say on all of our family issues and he does his best to make all his decisions impartial.

Any time we are eating today as a family, he sits at the top of the table; we all have designated seats at the dining table. When my brother and I are available, my grandfather teaches us about our traditions and cultures. My grandfather is very friendly and has a cool and great personality and tries to talk nicely and calmly to everyone passing across his message without being rude. He helps my brother and sometimes me with our assignments. He majorly teaches us about all of the tools we need to be successful in life including punctuality, discipline, moral, cleanliness, continuity, honesty, hard work and trustworthiness.

My lovely grandmother is one of the nicest people I know, she tells my brother and I lovely stories every night. My father is a civil engineer and he is very hardworking, sincere and punctual. He is the breadwinner of the family and does his best to provide for every member of the family even if that means he has to work extra hours. My mother is very sweet and takes care of every member of the family even though she works as an accountant at a firm. She wakes up very early in the morning to make preparations for the day. My brother is a funny and jovial person that enjoys sporting activities and I love him so much.

Sometimes I wish my cousins, uncles and aunts lived with us, I love having them around. There are a lot of advantages and disadvantages of having everyone around. I have highlighted some below.

Some advantages are:

1. It gives a better routine of living that can contribute to a proper growth.

2. Having a joint family helps in following the numerous principles of an equitable economy and helps teach discipline and respect. It also teaches us how to share the burden of other family members.

3. There is the understanding of having to adjust to the needs of other family members.

4. The children in a large family get to grow up in a happy environment because they have children of their age around that they can play with.

5. All the members of a joint family are usually very disciplined and responsible as everyone has to follow the instructions of the family head.

Some of the disadvantages include:

1. There is always the chance of a rift or fight between the family members because of the possible imbalance of feelings of oneness, brotherly love and feeling of generosity.

2. There is a chance of the members of the family that earn very high looking down on members of the family that do not.

The concept of family is important in India for every individual. Family defines an individual background in terms of social relations and growth. Families influence the lives of individuals from childhood to adulthood especially in decisions concerning life milestones like marriage and career paths. Indian families live together for up to four generations under one roof and they manage to maintain lose family relations compared to other families across the globe. Indian families tend to stick to their cultural practices as a family and they maintain religious practices that cut across the family. Elders in Indian families are respected by the members of the family and their opinions are considered during decision making.

What Family Really Means :

Basic knowledge defines a family as a group of people who share genetic and legal bonds. However, the concept of family means a lot more for other people than just the bond and it incorporates the concepts of culture and religion. In India, the concept of family differs from what the rest of the world perceives as family.

Families in India go beyond nuclear and extend to wider circles, whereby the extended family lives together and are closely related. The relationships in the family are strong such that cousins are considered siblings and aunts and uncles are considered parents. Family also means the unconditional love among the members of the family whereby there is support in terms of finances and emotions.

Why the Family is so important:

The family plays a central role in lives of individuals in teaching of moral values. Parents, aunts, uncles and grandparents have been known to teach the children on morality and disciplinary issue s in most cultures. Both spiritual and moral values are instilled through family. Family give a sense of belonging to individuals because they are over by the family and supported at all times.

A family will always support its members with needs including financial and emotional needs. In a family, there has been established levels of satisfaction and happiness from the joy of being together. Families also helping community development through contributions and participating in activities in the community. The family is important in the society in maintaining order, discipline and peace.

I come from a big family. My family has not moved to an urban area and so we still live as a wider circle together with the extended family. In my nuclear family, I am the first born of four children. I have one sister and two brothers who are still at school. I have three aunts and two uncles. My cousins are twelve in number and most of them are at school except for the youngest ones.

My grandparents are very old and they do not get out of the house much and are being taken care by my parents and aunts. Most of the children are always at school and the house gets quiet but during holiday, we all unite together as a full house. My family is of the middle class in terms of wealth. Our religion is Hindu and we all practice the Indian cultures and traditions. What I love about my family is that everyone is a good cook and the food is always amazing. Members of my family are kind and respectful and that is why we rarely have disputes. The family support is strong and we all love each other.

Why I love My Family:

Having a big family is interesting because the house always feels warm. As I had earlier mentioned, my family is made of good cooks, which makes me love them. There is always teamwork within the family and good relationships are maintained. I like the adventurous nature of my family because we always have fun whenever we go for holiday vacations or have a family event.

Moral cultural and spiritual values are highly cared for in the society. My family is oriented in good moral values and believe we make a good role model for the society. Despite the influence of education, the family has been able to maintain the culture and traditions of Indian people. The love that exists in my family is precious and that is the most important value of all times because what family without love?

Our Weekend Outings and House Parties:

We do not have many of these in our family because of the different schedules among the members. We only have weekend outings and house parties during holidays. Birthday parties are and weddings are the parties that we frequently have as a family. I love parties at home because the food is usually exceptionally good. Also, the dancing and happy faces. Weekend outings are usually in form of picnics and they are usually full of games.

Cousins Visit during Summer:

My family is young and only three of my cousins are in college. The rest are in high school or elementary schools. Whenever my cousins come home from school, it is a happy moment for the whole family and we host parties to welcome them home. Whenever my older cousins are at home, I enjoy their company and I love to hear stories about college because that is where I will be in a few years’ time.

In the spirit of holidays, we have a vacation or two in a year. During these vacations, plans begin early and when the time comes, it is enjoyable and relaxing. Vacations for us as children tend to be more enjoyable because we have an environment away from home and with minimal parental supervision and we tend to explore and talk among ourselves. Team building during vacations strengthens the bond in families.

Family is a blessing to individuals because that is where they belong and it is what defines them. A good family is built through moral values and team effort. Having family events and parties or vacations re important is strengthening the relationships within a family. A happy individual is definitely from a happy family.

We’ve got a pet dog, Brandy. He’s black and white and very friendly.

I like to think of my family as a jigsaw puzzle. Each member is like a piece of a mystery puzzle with different individuality and different purpose. Still, when put together, it perfectly conveys one clear message of a happy, peaceful, lovely life. Family plays a vital role in the life of a person as well as in society. A healthy family leads to a good community. Family is the unconditional source of love and support. They support us in all our ups and downs.

5 Benefits of having a big family and lots of adult siblings

Growing up in a large family was always something I cherished. As a child I was never alone, I always had sibling support at school when needed, and family occasions were always joyous, rowdy and a little chaotic. I absolutely loved being one of eight children.

However, as an adult with four fully grown children of my own, although the large family dynamics have changed, there are a number of unexpected joys to having a number of brothers and sisters.

1 Advisors at hand

Life as an adult can be a little daunting, and you may need a few pearls of wisdom from someone who knows you inside out and what you’ve been through in life. Well, if you’re one of many you have a number of people to call on for counsel (although sometimes this can be a little confusing when you get contradictory — but very well-meaning — advice!).

In return, it’s also very satisfying to be able to offer your advice that’s borne from your own experience to siblings in need, whether this is concerning relationships, kids, or how to deal with colleagues.

2 Nifty network

One of the great things about large families is that as siblings age, they’ve no doubt had lots of different careers or job opportunities. This can lead to brothers and sisters being able to exchange their know-how with each other and help each other out. It’s also great for nephews and nieces when they need to find internships, or even jobs. There’s often a sibling in a position to help out.

3 Caring for aging parents

As we ourselves age we get to witness our parents aging . While sometimes this can be smooth running, if there are any issues, there’s a myriad of brothers and sisters who are ready to offer love and support to their parents, and to each other.

This was the case with my father just a few years ago. He had a medical issue that led most of us to believe he was in a situation of life and death. Most of the siblings were able to get to my mother’s side to support her, my father’s side to make him laugh, and to each other’s sides to cope with the fact that our parents, whom we’d taken for granted, wouldn’t be around forever. But we also realized that even when they pass away, we’d still be an unbreakable family unit.

4 Interminable teasing

Being one of eight meant that growing up I was teased about absolutely everything, especially my name. Now, aged 50, this hasn’t changed. Every family occasion, or WhatsApp group message, there’s constant banter and references to jokes that are decades old.

You might ask should the teasing ever stop? I’d say a resolute “no.” It keeps us young at heart and reminds us that we have a brotherly and sisterly bond that will last a lifetime.

5 Endless celebrations

One of the greatest beauties of large families is there’s always something to celebrate. From baptisms to birthdays, there’s always a great occasion to get together and have some family fun. The joy this can bring your own children is priceless.

Small Family Is Better Than Big Family (Essay Sample)

In the modern times, many people are resorting to the small family because of the many advantages that come with it. Some people perceive small family as the perfect and happy family for all people regardless of social status. This is because a small family can easily adjust in all conditions when compared to a big one. There are various reasons why a small family is considered better than a big family.

A small family is considered a happy one because there is less stress associated with economic issues. The small number of individuals in a family facilitates easier planning on basic issues such as food, health, and education. There is little expenditure on daily basic needs hence extra income is put on other important issues for the family. The family can live healthily and at the same time afford to spend money on the luxury such as holidays. This is not the case with large families having a similar income. A lot is spent on basic daily needs and any plan for luxury expenditure stretches into important needs hence denying the family happy life.

Closely related is the less stress for parents and children associated with the small family. At early ages, children have a lot of squabbles to resolve with the assistance of parents. This is because kids are more playful and their minds are actively growing. With only one or two kids, one has minimum parenting issues to handle. The big family has a challenge since one will always deal with misunderstandings arising from child games. This denies a parent maximum time of concentrating on other important issues.

A small family offers a better opportunity for parents to understand their children and create a strong bond. Few children enable parents to give maximum attention to their needs hence chance of conflicts is minimal. Parents and children have a better opportunity to share their life stories to each other and therefore strengthens the relationship. On the contrary, the large family does not offer sufficient time for parents to look after their children. Every child has their different needs and there is a risk of giving maximum attention to some while overlooking others. Consequently, conflicts develop among the family members.

A small family is a big advantage to mothers since they play a major role from carrying the pregnancy to taking care of the infant. One or two children in a family offer the mother with a lot of free time to focus on other issues such as career and developing themselves. In addition, the mother pays maximum attention to the needs of children. The small family, therefore, helps the mother to juggle between family and career life. However, the big family has the challenge of straining on free time of mothers. The mother will never get sufficient time of focussing on career development and children’s welfare.

Besides, the kids become more independent with small families. The few children strive to learn a lot about life on their own without much guidance and observation from fellow siblings. They set their own life expectations and work to achieve them. Therefore, with minimum guidance from parents, the children get to learn a lot independently which is necessary and important in a case of absence of parents.

The many advantages associated with small families do not, however, imply the big family only has disadvantages. Big families also have their own advantages but cannot override those accrued to small families.

‘How to Have Sex’ (2024)

The title is provocative, but this is no how-to manual; instead, the writer and director Molly Manning Walker tells a contemporary coming-of-age story that will reverberate with viewers of all ages and sexes. Her focus is on Tara (Mia McKenna-Bruce), a 16-year-old British girl on a post-exams holiday in Crete with her friends. They plan to party, drink and hook up, and the latter is of particular import to Tara, who is keen to lose her virginity — less out of desire or romanticism than to simply get it over with. Manning is a cinematographer making her feature directing debut, and she deftly uses compositions, color and sound to convey Tara’s isolation, desperation and disappointment. She gets a big assist from McKenna-Bruce, a charismatic and empathetic lead who can whisper, in a throwaway line or discreet gesture, everything you need to know about this young woman’s past and present.

‘Miller’s Girl’ (2024)

The first-time writer and director Jade Halley Bartlett makes occasional rookie errors in this psychosexual drama. But she has a knack with actors, particularly Jenna Ortega, who plays the lead role of a brainy teen seductress with wit and verve. Bartlett photographs Ortega like a movie star, and she comes off like one; she has a particular way of chewing on a line of loaded dialogue, and she and Martin Freeman (as the creative writing professor whose professional interest becomes personal) create a specific, uneasy but undeniable chemistry that smooths over the script’s rougher stretches. The third-act turn into a 21st century “Oleanna” is effective, with Bartlett inventively intermingling her levels of fiction and cleanly visualizing the inevitable he said/she said conflicts. The moment when Ortega decisively takes the upper hand is screen acting of the highest order.

‘Men’ (2022)

Alex Garland’s latest, “Civil War,” has struck up a fair amount of conversation for its provocative ideas. This is his bread and butter; he delights in using the conventions of genre filmmaking to reflect on the complexities and difficulties of the human condition. His previous film falls along the same lines, taking up the forever-topical subject of the power dynamic between men and women. Jessie Buckley (excellent as ever) stars as a young woman whose peaceful getaway at a country cottage turns into an unsettling exploration of misogyny; Rory Kinnear co-stars, in a clever bit of casting, as every man she encounters. It’s a rather unsubtle method of underscoring the ever-present threat of gendered violence, but these are not subtle themes — or times.

‘A Most Wanted Man’ (2014)

In one of his final performances, great Philip Seymour Hoffman is Günther Bachmann, the German intelligence officer at the center of this modest but affecting adaptation of John le Carré’s post-9/11 novel. The director Anton Corbijn, his visual style sharpened by years as an in-demand photographer, finds the right look and feel for this story of weary bureaucrats trying (and often failing) to navigate a shifting geopolitical landscape. The supporting cast (which includes Willem Dafoe, Rachel McAdams and Robin Wright) is first rate, but this is Hoffman’s aria, and he performs it with the grace and nuance that made him such a special actor.

‘Mr. Turner’ (2014)

The biographical drama of the tortured artistic genius has become one of the most tiresome touchstones of contemporary cinema, but Mike Leigh does not make check-the-box movies, and this dramatization of the life of the British painter J.M.W. Turner eschews the shopworn biopic tropes. Instead, Leigh sees Turner as a pragmatic painter, blunt in his personal interactions but inspired in his work, and Leigh’s regular collaborator Timothy Spall plays his complexities and contradictions adroitly, while the cinematographer Dick Pope gives his process a breathtaking pulse.

‘The Dead Don’t Die’ (2019)

This is Jim Jarmusch. I’m the writer and director of “The Dead Don’t Die.” This is a scene that takes place in the Centerville police station. It’s a three-cop town, Centerville. Bill Murray, the chief. Adam Driver and Chloë Sevigny play the other two officers. There are two parts to this scene. The first is Officer Peterson — Adam Driver — explaining to Chloë Sevigny’s character that there is, in fact, a zombie apocalypse. “It’s zombies.” “What are you saying?” “Well, it’s the undead. They’ve been reanimated, caused by the Earth having been pulled off its axis, caused by the polar fracking.” And the second part of the scene is dealing with one of the undead who comes to life, played by Carol Kane. Her name is Mallory O’Brien and was known as the town drunk. - [screams] These undead in our film have a kind of vestigial memory for one thing that they were sort of obsessed with when they were alive. And in this case, being the town drunk, her obsession was chardonnay. “Look out, kids.” I’m not a big splatter film guy, so all the zombies in our film are dried up and dust inside. “Chardonnay.” “I got this, Cliff.” The visual effect is quite stunning and was done by a wonderful company, Chimney. It was quite daunting. We had to have a stand-in for Carol Kane for the actual swinging of the machete. The machete itself was only a very short blade so that it actually didn’t touch the stunt person. “Chardonnay.” - [screams] [gunshot] Bill Murray’s last shot to the severed head was improvised. In each of the other takes, he didn’t do that. But I found that very funny. Chloë Sevigny, as an actor, she is a real master of small reactions. And she is our kind of scream queen in the film because she screams maybe six times throughout the entire film.

The eternally hip writer-director Jim Jarmusch summons up a cast of his go-to actors (including Steve Buscemi, Adam Driver, Bill Murray and Tilda Swinton) for this delightfully unpredictable zombie apocalypse comedy. Driver, Murray and Chloë Sevigny are police officers in the small town of Centerville, a tiny world turned upside down by the rise of the undead, and what begins as a fairly standard “Night of the Living Dead” riff becomes a pointed commentary on Trump’s America — and then a clever meta-textual riff on filmmaking itself.

‘The Witness’ (2016)

After her violent 1964 death, the name Kitty Genovese became a kind of shorthand for urban indifference, after the Times reported that her stabbing had been witnessed by 38 neighbors who failed to act. In later years, The Times reconsidered its account ; this powerful documentary also attempts to set the record straight, following Ms. Genovese’s younger brother Bill as he attempts to not only clarify the circumstances of her death, but highlight the joy and bravery of her life. Kitty Genovese was a person, not a symbol, and the director James Solomon admirably and poignantly corrects that error.

‘Riotsville, USA’ (2022)

As news outlets have recently reported on police clashing with protesters on college campuses, some necessary historical context is available via this documentary account of how our government addressed similar civil unrest in the late 1960s. The title comes from a government training facility, a fake town built for urban riot training exercises, and the director Sierra Pettengill uncovers shocking (and occasionally amusing) archival footage of those exercises and contemporaneous images of police and soldiers violently stifling peaceful protesters. This is a fierce, angry film — the kind of documentary where historical overview blurs uncomfortably into contemporary commentary.

The Roloff Family: All About the Little People, Big World Stars

Get to know the Roloff family, including Matt and Amy Roloff’s four kids and seven grandkids

The Roloff family has shared their family life on TV for almost 20 years.

The TLC hit reality series Little People, Big World premiered in 2006, and throughout its tenure, has focused on Matt Roloff , Amy Roloff and their children Zachary Roloff , Jeremy Roloff , Molly Roloff and Jacob Roloff at home on Roloff Farms in Hillsboro, Oregon.

Matt and Amy, who divorced in 2016 , have seven grandchildren, including their most recent grandson born in April 2022 . Matt has diastrophic dysplasia, a rare form of dwarfism, while Amy and Zach have achondroplasia (the most common form of dwarfism). Jeremy, Molly and Jacob are of average size.

After nearly 20 years on TV, the family has continued showing their internal drama and stress over running the farm. In a teaser for the LPBW season 16 premiere in 2024, Matt revealed that he would be leaving the farm and its land to his ex-wife Amy in his will. The clip, shared exclusively with PEOPLE , also promised more family drama to come in the show's next installment.

Here’s everything to know about the Little People, Big World stars, including their kids and their grandkids.

Matt Roloff

Matt was born on Oct. 7, 1961, in San Francisco. He has diastrophic dysplasia, a rare form of dwarfism characterized by short limbs and orthopedic problems that required “countless surgeries” as a child, according to Matt's LinkedIn . He designed and sold computer systems before buying Roloff Farms in the 1990s.

Beyond sharing a starring role on LPBW , Matt and his ex-wife Amy also share twins Zach and Jeremy, daughter Molly and son Jacob. The former couple rose to fame on their show alongside their four children when it premiered in 2006. Nearly 10 years later, in 2015, Matt and Amy filed for divorce.

“We are proud of what we have accomplished together, including raising four wonderful children who have grown to become remarkable adults and building our strong and ongoing successful businesses," the pair said in a statement to PEOPLE at the time.

They continued, “Our kids and our ever growing family, and the love and support we have for them, will be our priority. We will continue to work together side by side in the daily responsibilities for our many current ventures."

Matt started dating his current girlfriend Caryn Chandler, a former employee at Roloff Farms, in 2017. On an August 2021 episode of LPBW , they revealed they were moving in together .

"Our grand plan right now is to stay committed, stay in love, go to Arizona and spend a tremendous amount of time together," Chandler said in a confessional. "Then when we're here in Portland, we'll live individually and see each other a lot."

In April 2023, Matt announced his engagement to Chandler. " After six wonderful years together, I asked Caryn to marry me and she said yes! " he told PEOPLE. "Our plan is to enjoy our engagement and we are looking forward to a simple but elegant wedding in 2024."

After a brief period when Matt listed part of the 109-acre Roloff Farms for sale in May 2022, the farmer chose instead to transform it into a short-term rental . "I have decided to pull the small farm off the open market and partner with @itrip_vacations and open the @rolofffarms to everyone and anyone who wants to spend a few nights in the Roloff family home," Matt said.

He added, “Needless to say we are scrambling hard behind the scenes (plus running the busy Pumpkin patch) to convert (re-furnish) the home to be ready for its first guests. We realize this #staycations style homes aren't for everyone but it's my hope many families will be able to pull together and have family reunions in this home."

Matt is also a children’s book author and a motivational speaker.

Amy was born on Sept. 17, 1962 (the same day as her daughter Molly) in Michigan. She attended Central Michigan University and graduated in 1985, according to her LinkedIn profile . The reality star shares twins Zach and Jeremy, daughter Molly and son Jacob with her ex-husband Matt. The former couple were married from 1987 to 2016.

“We thought we’d grow old together on this farm, but plans changed,” Amy said in a March 2020 episode of Little People, Big World . “Right now, Matt and I are doing the best we can when it comes to family things. It’s not easy, but I know both Matt and I are determined to make it work well post-divorce because this is family.”

Amy married Chris Marek on Aug. 28, 2021, at Roloff Farms. " It was just all so right and good ," Amy told PEOPLE after their nuptials. "I am just elated. I'm happy. I'm thrilled that I have found someone to spend the rest of my days with."

"I think what I'm looking forward to the most is just really dreaming together," she continued. "We're all in now, so it's just solidifying the relationship, where we live."

While both parts of the couple have moved on to new relationships, Amy remains friendly with her ex Matt and his girlfriend Chandler .

Beyond her work on TV, Amy is also the founder and CEO of Amy Roloff Enterprises which has included her writing several books, including 2019’s A Little Me , and several published recipes in Amy Roloff’s Little Kitchen . Additionally, Amy has been a motivational speaker .

Zach Roloff

Matt and Amy welcomed Zach on May 10, 1990, along with his twin brother Jeremy. He was born in Oregon, where he now lives with his wife and kids.

Zach is the only one of his siblings who is still regularly featured on Little People, Big World . He married Tori on the family farm in July 2015, with his brother Jeremy as his best man. Ahead of the wedding, Zach told PEOPLE, “It’s a big day. We’re marrying, coming together, committing ourselves to one another for a lifetime in front of all of our family and friends. We’re just super excited! ”

Beyond holding his nuptials on the farm, Zach was even interested in buying a portion of the land when Matt wanted to sell in May 2022.

However, in October of that year, Zach's dad decided to turn it into a short-term rental destination. Two months later, Tori hinted in an Instagram Story that she and Zach's time on the show might end soon . "I think our time is definitely coming to a close but we're trying to enjoy it while it's here!" she said.

Zach has three children with his wife Tori: sons Josiah Luke and Jackson Kyle and daughter Lilah Ray . Like their dad, all three children were born with achondroplasia while Tori is of average height. Since becoming parents, the couple have had some on-screen spats including one tense moment in a December 2022 episode when Tori reflected on the challenges of motherhood and told Zach, “You don't give me any credit for anything.”

Despite occasional tense moments, the couple have focused on being real on-screen and sharing all parts of their relationship, including how they get everything done with three small children.

"I would say Zach takes care of the outside of the house and I take care of the inside of the house," Tori said in a confessional. “I do breakfast, feed the kids, get Jackson ready for school, take him to school. Then come home and Siah goes down for his first nap and then it's just me and Lilah, and we play. He wakes up, we do lunch."

In February 2024, Zach and Tori announced that they were leaving the show on an episode of their Raising Heights  podcast.

"I think the chapter has closed regardless of us being asked back or not. We've made it pretty clear we're done with that chapter for multiple reasons," Zach said at the time. "But because we've made that pretty clear, they haven't asked us back, technically, This last cycle was rough, between the family, the farm deal and we are done with it."

Jeremy was born to Matt and Amy in Oregon on May 10, 1990, along with his twin brother Zach. He spent 14 years, 17 seasons and over 300 episodes on LPBW before departing the series in 2018 .

The reality star began his college career at Portland Community College, according to his LinkedIn , and graduated from the Brooks Institute in 2014. Jeremy has worked as a camera operator for weddings and a production assistant. Like his parents and Zach, he is an entrepreneur and has been president of The Roloff Company since August 2019.

Jeremy married Audrey Mirabella Roloff on Sept. 20, 2014, on the family farm, six months after getting engaged. The couple have been open about the “hard” parts of marriage, with Audrey sharing a “vulnerable” post on Instagram in 2019 revealing that she and Jeremy “have been working through some things and let’s just say there has been a lot of ‘heated fellowship,’ morning hugs missed, and date nights postponed.”

The pair share three children: daughter Ember Jean and sons Bode James and Radley Knight . They often share photos of their family on Instagram for fans to keep up with them.

Now off the show, he and his wife Audrey own Beating 50 Percent, which includes a collection of journals and guides for married couples. They also released a book in 2018 along the same vein called A Love Letter Life: Pursue Creatively, Date Intentionally, Love Faithfully . At the time Jeremy told PEOPLE, “We believe everyone has a unique love story and we want people to be super stoked to press into their own love story. We want readers to prepare more for their marriage than their wedding [day].”

He continued, “I think social media can paint facades, so [Audrey and I] hope that people will walk away [from the book] knowing that we aren’t perfect, our [dating] relationship wasn’t perfect. We learned from our struggles and we came out stronger on the other side.”

The pair also have a newsletter and started renting out the Spring River Cabin in 2023.

Molly Roloff Silvius

Amy and Matt welcomed Molly on Sept. 17, 1993, in Oregon. She is of average height and is the only daughter of Matt and Amy.

Molly has distanced herself from the spotlight since leaving for college at Whitworth University in Spokane, Washington, where she graduated with a degree in accounting and Spanish language and literature, according to her LinkedIn .

The Roloff's only daughter worked for the accounting firm Moss Adams for over four years and started as a senior accountant for Nordstrom in June 2021.

In August 2017, Molly married Joel Silvius at one of her favorite spots on the family farm. “ We feel blessed to have been able to celebrate our marriage surrounded by so many people we love ,” the couple told PEOPLE.

Her Instagram account is private as she seems to prefer being out of the spotlight since leaving Little People, Big World .

Jacob Roloff

The youngest child of Matt and Amy, Jacob, was born in Oregon on Jan. 17, 1997. He is a photographer and a writer, based on his Rock and Roloff website . Jacob also runs Helvetia Gardens which is dedicated to “Growing organic cannabis and vegetables in historic Helvetia, Oregon," according to their Instagram bio .

He left LPBW in 2016, explaining why in a July Instagram post . “I get comments on here all the time about how people 'miss me on the show' or telling me I should 'do a few more episodes' with the family; I'm posting this to say that that will never happen,” he wrote. “I am with my family and I love them I'm just here to say you'll never see that from me on TV again.”

Jacob also referenced his time on the show in a post on X (formerly Twitter) in May 2022. “People don’t realize I was paid roughly $6/hr to be filmed for my whole childhood,” he wrote. “I’m still called rich derisively lol. I wish I went scorched earth but I value family, I wish I kept filming but I value my principles and my soul. Life is complicated.”

Jacob married his wife Isabel in September 2019, after getting engaged in Iceland in December 2017. A year prior to their wedding, Isabel opened up about her anxiety during that moment of life in an Instagram post .

“This has been a really challenging season of life for me, and for us, and we have been in ‘transition’ for what feels like an eternity. I know it is all part of our journey, and I am trying to honor that while also manage my anxiety,” she wrote. “Focusing on the present moment and recognizing that being engaged only exists for a short time, and soon enough—ONE YEAR FROM TODAY—we will finally be married and it will be the best day of our lives."

Jacob has one child with Isabel, a son named Mateo Tomás. The proud dad announced the baby news in a post on X in December 2021. “My wife is a superhero, my son is an angel and all nurses are saints. Goodnight," he wrote.

In December 2020, Jacob opened up more about his experience on LPBW and said that he was molested by Chris Cardamone , a former producer on the show, from 2007 to 2010.

"It is often much easier to think about things than it is to talk about them, and so this disclosure has been delayed, but through that delay I have found the fortitude and words," Jacob wrote on Instagram at the time. "As a child, after what I realize now was a long grooming process, I was molested by an executive field producer for 'Little People Big World,' Chris Cardamone."

"I choose to disclose it now as it remains a traumatic memory that needs to be exorcised of any further power over my development," Jacob continued in his post. "I am certain that this is a positive moment for me, and another step toward a brighter future."

Cardamone did not respond to PEOPLE's request for comment at the time, while TLC told PEOPLE in a statement, "TLC was just informed about an alleged encounter that occurred years ago involving a third party connected to the production of  Little People, Big World . We are saddened and troubled by this very serious allegation, and TLC will work cooperatively with the authorities."

After Jacob came forward with his story of sexual abuse, Amy replied in the comments, "I love you forever and always Jacob. Im proud of you. Now you don't have to feel alone and carry this around anymore."
