Inspirational Quotes From Inspirational Scientists

We are in many ways unimaginably small within this universe, yet uniquely special. We have the power to go to space, are self aware, and masters of our own destiny. Yet we are on a small planet circling a very average star, spiraling around a massive galaxy of hundreds of billions of stars. That galaxy, on top of that, is just one of billions of galaxies. Yet we are alive today, and that is a gift no one can undervalue.

Scientists are an interesting breed of people, they are creative, adventurers, critical, and pragmatic. This may not be the initial subset of people you would look to for inspiration. However, think for an instance of the motivation required to tackle the great intellectual challenges of our time. Scientists are driven by constant curiosity and inspired to find truth .

3. Life cannot have had a random beginning ... The trouble is that there are about 2000 enzymes, and the chance of obtaining them all in a random trial is only one part in 10^40,000, an outrageously small probability that could not be faced even if the whole universe consisted of organic soup. - Fred Hoyle

Sir Fred Hoyle ( 1915 - 2001) , an astronomer, was known for controversial stances on scientific matters and contribution to stellar nucleosynthesis. He often rejected the Big Bang Theory and instead favored a steady state university theory.

Neil deGrasse Tyson's ( 1958 - present) quote from The Colbert Report distinguishes the difference between opinion and fact. Science, as a base, is always true, it is interpretation that imparts human error. Whether you believe in science or not is irrelevant.

14. Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood. Now is the time to understand more, so that we may fear less. ― Marie Curie

Marie Curie (1867 - 1934) was the first woman to be awarded a Nobel Prize in 1903 for her contributions to physics. She was again awarded the 1911 Nobel Prize for her contributions to chemistry. Although we may fear the unknown, it should not limit our desire to understand the unknown.

An Inspirational Book

If you're not inspired out and you haven't yet read The Power Of Positive Thinking , I highly recommend purchasing it or getting a copy from your local library. This self-help book by Dr. Norman Vincent Peale was published in 2003 and profoundly impacted my life, goals, and outlook of my life. Although Peale does rely on religious-based practices, you do not have to be religious to employ the same strategy. Alter the strategy to fit who you are.

The Power of Positive Thinking by Norman Peale (Credit: Amazon)

This book discusses channeling positive thought and action and not letting negativity and cynicism get in the way. If you find yourself overwhelmed by situations that are present every day, this book allows for positive thinking to defeat negative thoughts and help you aspire to the goals you set forth for yourself. No one owns your mood or thoughts beyond you, this book teaches you how to take control of how situations and people affect your mood. If you do not allow your outlook to be affected by others, you can focus on positive thought and your goals.

This book has brought many dedicated believers and has transformed many people's lives. If you're looking for inspiration and motivation, the first thing to do in my opinion is to quell doubt and cynicism. Let me know in the comments below if you have other books you enjoy that have impacted you. It helps to hear what other people found helpful and what the people use in their daily life.

An Inspirational TED Talk

Lastly, I'll leave you with one of the best TED talks I have ever watched by Amy Cuddy , a social psychologist and Associate Professor at Harvard Business School . Cuddy's TED talk has been viewed more than 32 million times and is the second most viewed TED talk of all time.

Cuddy has spent her life studying how people judge other people and influence each other. She researches stereotypes, discrimination, and much more. In her TED talk Cuddy reveals the power pose and how important postures demonstrating confidence actually affect our mood, testosterone, and cortisol levels in our brain. One's mood can be altered and influenced not only by positive thinking, but also power poses and confident stances. This is a must watch for those looking for a bit more motivation!

That wraps up some of the most inspirational quotes from scientists around the world and from generations past and present. I hope this has offered some inspiration to you and sparked your imagination. It sure has sparked mine.

Understanding Science

How science REALLY works...

  • Understanding Science 101

Science is embedded in, and influenced by, the broader society.

Science and society

Societies have changed over time, and consequently, so has  science . For example, during the first half of the 20th century, when the world was enmeshed in war, governments made funds available for scientists to pursue research with wartime applications — and so science progressed in that direction, unlocking the mysteries of nuclear energy. At other times, market forces have led to scientific advances. For example, modern corporations looking for income through medical treatment, drug production, and agriculture, have increasingly devoted resources to biotechnology research, yielding breakthroughs in genomic sequencing and genetic engineering. And on the flipside, modern foundations funded by the financial success of individuals may invest their money in ventures that they deem to be socially responsible, encouraging research on topics like renewable energy technologies. Science is not static; it changes over time, reflecting shifts in the larger societies in which it is embedded.

Here, we’ll briefly examine a few of the many ways in which the larger society influences science. You can investigate:

Science and Society

Essay No. 01

Synopsis : Science and society are in constant and fruitful interaction through scientists.  Man is a social being and so is a scientist.  Society provides scientists with laboratories,. Libraries and institution of learning and the scientists in their turn commit themselves to the betterment of the society by their discoveries, exploration, inventions etc. Science is a rational approach to truth.  It is the path of reason, knowledge, research and dynamism to reality. Pt, Nehru was a great champion of scientific approach to the truth and did hi utmost to cultivate scientific temper among the people.  Science stands for challenge and change in the face of old, routine, conventional, stagnant and rotten.

Science is the systematic study of the physical universe and its contents by means of observations, measurements and experiments,. It is an attempt to explain nature and behavior of things,. Science goes down deep into the causes of life and nature, their evolution, their interaction and thereby attempts to improve the conditions and quality of living.  Science help sin greater and more objective analysis of cause and effect, of facts and evidence, Science opens new frontiers of knowledge and unravels the mysteries of nature and things.

Men and women who make these researches, studies, discoveries and unravel mysteries are scientists.  They are integral part of the society collectively and individually. Society with its well established law and order, facilities for research, analysis, observation, experiments etc. helps them to conduct their explorations and discovers in the unknown.  Without a society no scientific research and development are possible.  The growth and development in science and technology are in direct relation and proportion to the development and growth of society The more developed and advanced a society is, the better the conditions and facilities for research in higher areas of knowledge and learning there are. In their turn the scientists have theri9 social obligations and commitments to see that they contribute generously in the improvement of quality of life.

In modern India there have been many great champions of science and advocates of scientific thinking who paid their wholehearted homage at the shrine of pure knowledge.  But pt. Nehru stands above them all beaus the strove hard throughout his life as a man, leader and the first Prime Minister of India to inculcate the scientific temper among the Indian populace.  Once in an opening ceremony speaking on the spirit of Science, he said, ”Science teaches us new ways of doing things. Perhaps, it improves our conditions of industrial life but the basic things that science should do is to teach us to think straight, to act straight and not to be afraid of discarding anything or of accepting anything provided there are sufficient reasons for doing so.

Science in itself is neither good nor bad.  It is human beings who make science.  Ills of science like the destructive power of nuclear weapons, the erosion of values because of spread of gross materialism, ever increasing depletion of natural resources, degradation and pollution of the environment etc. are actually the ills of man using science in a way that is destructive, undesirable and unholy.  It is because the scientist in man has deviated from his social commitments, social conscience .  Therefore, there are some sections in the society who want an immediate halt to the growth of scientific researches and studies.

Science and morality or change and continuity are not inimical or incompatible,. The evil lies in human mind which can use both science and morality for evil purposes, Science is knowledge, pure, objective and empirical engaged in making the life more easy, comfortable and less painful.  There is hardly and walk of department of life which is not in the embrace of science . It has helped us in conquering diseases, hunger, famine, distances and physical and geographical barriers,.  It has turned the globe into an international village.  The conquest of space and the moon are some of the greatest achievements of modern science and technology.  The true spirit of science lies in search and discovery of truth.

Essay No. 02

Science has revolutionised life and brought about tremendous social change. Mankind has benefited immensely from the advances in science However; the misuse of scientific knowledge can be disastrous for man Therefore, it is vital to prevent abuse of science. Man, if determined, can do it with his natural wisdom .

Science and technology have made tremendous progress in the last two centuries and almost revolutionized the human existence. No aspect of human life has remained unaffected by it. Today, mankind has come a long way from those early days of civilization when it was at the mercy of natural forces and paid obeisance to every object of nature-sky, earth, moon, sun, trees, even animals-out of sheer ignorance and a, fear. We cannot help but marvel at the ingenuity of our ancestors, who with their preservenice and constant endeavor managed to unravel the mysteries of nature, and made it possible for man to have basic necessities of life, like food, shelter and clothing. After this initial victory over the forces of nature, there was no looking back. Man home the master of his environment to a large extent.

Science which has given so many blessings to mankind has also simultaneously created instruments of destruction which can annihilate the whole world in no time. We cannot underestimate that science can not only heal, it can also kill.

Our progress in science and technique has involved some tincture of evil, with good. Our comforts and conveniences have weakened our physical stamina and moral fibre. Today, merely «by pressing various kinds of buttons we can get what we want. It has led to wasting of human bodies and brought new diseases which science is still grappling with.

Industrialization in its wake brought problems of congestion of cities due to mass exodus of rural people in search of employment. Our cities have become infested with slums and ghettos.

Science has given man deadly weapons which have increased crime and destruction of man by man. Two world wars have amply proved that science can be very destructive. People have not yet recovered from the horrors of Nagasaki and Hiroshima. The large scale human suffering that time has brought about a remarkable change in the lifestyle of the people Today, a farmer can harvest a much better crop due to the availability of effective pesticides fertilizers, canals for irrigating the fields, etc-all made possible by the scientific research. Progress in the industrial field has been all the more impressive. Besides providing employment to many, it has reduced the drudgery in life and provided man with ample leisure to pursue his personal interests and widen his horizon. Our forefathers did not have the means of entertainment and education like radio, television, cinema, etc. to fill up their leisure hours. These modern means of mass communication have truly proved to be very effective tools of education.

In earlier times, there were no rapid means of transport and communication. It is not short of a miracle that today we can travel around the world in an aeroplane within 24 hours. Science has performed wonders in the field of communication. We don’t have to wait for days in anxiety to get news of our loved ones. One can talk to ones near and dear relatives over long distance on telephone, or send messages. The world has indeed shrunk and frontiers of distances have been overcome. Communication satellites like INSAT-IB have added to the marvels of science.

The most valuable contribution of science has been in the field of medicine which has reduced human suffering to large extent. Infant mortality rate has come down and average life span of man has increased. Today, it is due to the discoveries of science that we have been able to find a cure for most diseases like small-pox, cholera,  tuberculosis, etc. and prevent the outbreak of epidemics. Discovery of antibiotics has made it possible for the doctors to relieve “people of their pain and Suffering.

Atomic energy is one of the most valuable discoveries of science. It is effectively used in the fields of medicine and surgery. It is used even to produce cheap electricity. In agriculture farmer are able to save their crops from destruction by pests and insects with the help of atomic energy. It industry too, it has helped in the production of better quality of goods.

Scientific age has indeed brought about astounding Social change. However, all changes are not necessarily conducive to the welfare of man. Today, the world lives under a fear of the outbreak of Third World War, which if it was to become a reality could be the end of life on earth. In spite of this dark looming cloud more and more countries have acquired sophisticated weapons and are spending the precious national income on defense equipment. We are virtually sitting  on a volcano ready to erupt any moment. If they are used by the nations who have them, the entire mankind will be destroyed in one sweep.

Unplanned industrialization has played halo; with our ecology. Today, environmentalists go hoarse by crying in vain to attract the attention of the people in power to save the trees, hills, etc. which are a Source of “life and to control the pollution levels in the atmosphere which is taking a heavy toll We should learn lessons from Bhopal tragedy and Chernobyl disaster before it is too late.

There is, therefore, an: urgent need to ensure that knowledge and power gained through science is used for constructive purposes The future of  mankind cannot be left to be determined by the whims and fancies of a few. We should work for the benefit of the human race and planet on which we live.

Man has to exercise control over his primitive passions like lust for power, instinct to fight for his survival He should use science for his advancement and growth and not allow it to destroy everything Men must take their destiny do their own hands and using their natural wisdom use science to build a glorious future for the human race.

essay science and society with quotations

Science can never solve one problem without raising ten more problems.

The key to success for everything in business, science and technology is never to follow the others.

Science and technology can solve all the world's problems, and historically it has been shown to make the world better and better.

One machine can do the work of fifty ordinary men. No machine can do the work of one extraordinary man.

It has become appallingly obvious that our technology has exceeded our humanity.

Isaac Asimov quote: The saddest aspect of life right now is that science gathers knowledge faster...

The saddest aspect of life right now is that science gathers knowledge faster than society gathers wisdom.

Science and technology contribute to the fast-expanding vocabularies of all living civilized tongues at a faster rate than all other fields of human endeavor put together.

A successful society is characterized by a rising living standard for its population, increasing investment in factories and basic infrastructure, and the generation of additional surplus, which is invested in generating new discoveries in science and technology.

The intelligent use of science and technology are the tools with which to achieve a new direction.

Humankind has the science and technology to destroy itself or to provide prosperity for all. But while science offers us these opportunities, science will not make that choice for us. Only the moral power of a world acting as a community can

Science is the great antidote to the poison of enthusiasm and superstition.

The scientist is not a person who gives the right answers, he is one who asks the right questions.

You innovate in ways that stoke your economy. Because innovations in science and technology are the engines of 21st century economies.

essay science and society with quotations

Science is a way of thinking much more than it is a body of knowledge.

If we continue to develop our technology without wisdom or prudence, our servant may prove to be our executioner.

Science and technology are what we can do; morality is what we agree we should or should not do.

The science and technology which have advanced man safely into space have brought about startling medical advances for man on earth. Out of space research have come new knowledge, techniques and instruments which have enabled some bedridden invalids to walk, the totally deaf to hear, the voiceless to talk, and, in the foreseeable future, may even make it possible for the blind to "see."

Our scientific power has outrun our spiritual power. We have guided missiles and misguided men.

To restore America's competitiveness, we must recruit a new generation of science and technology leaders by investing in diversity.

The real problem is not whether machines think but whether men do.

We live in a society exquisitely dependent on science and technology, in which hardly anyone knows anything about science and technology.

We've arranged a civilization in which most crucial elements profoundly depend on science and technology.

Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind.

The march of science and technology does not imply growing intellectual complexity in the lives of most people. It often means the opposite.

Essay on Science and Technology with Quotations for 2nd Year

“Science is a key which unlocks for mankind and store of nature.” (Samuel Johnson)

Some people hold the opinion that science is a curse but I tend to think that it is not. It is the thinking or the use of something that makes something a curse or a blessing. Science is the product of brilliant minds but it is the evil genius that turns a beneficial thing into a harmful thing. Science helps people to do things for the welfare of humanity. Blessings of science can transform this world of ours into an earthly paradise. There are a number of miracles of science that we can see in various fields of life.

“Men love to wonder and that is the seed of science.” (Emerson)

One great discovery is electricity. Electric machines have largely reduced manual labour. Electricity has made things easier for us. Without it our whole industry will come to a standstill position. If there were no electricity, the entire world would be in darkness. Life is not a bed of thorns now because of scientific inventions. Science has brightened and broadened our horizon and acumen.

Science has played an important role in the production of food. There is a significant increase in the production of crops due to fertilizers and modern equipment. Engineers have built dams on rivers to provide water for canals to irrigate the fields. So, man has almost solved the problem of food shortage.

“A man of science is just a student of nature and derives his inspiration from science.” (C.V Romans)

Monsters of the past have been conquere3d. Medical science has controlled epidemics. It is now possible to operate upon the heart and even replace it. Operations of eye, ear and nose are very common. There are useful injections which quickly relieve one from pain and illness. Vaccination has made small-pox a thing of the past. Many other diseases like cholera, plague and T.B. have been fully controlled. Quinine has eradicated malaria.

In the field of surgery, science is touching the zenith of progress. Science has added to our physical comforts as well as our mental and intellectual development. There is a goodly number of sources of communication like newspapers, magazines, radio, television, and internet that update people about the current affairs.

They help people to know about what is going on in the world. There is more awareness today than it was in the past.

“Science is more stimulating to the imagination than are the classics.”

No doubt, science is a good servant to humanity, but it is a bad master also. Indeed, it has helped man to solve many problems but modern scientific progress has also created many new problems. Aeroplanes drop bombs and kill men in thousands. Poisonous gasses and other instruments of war are all terribly destructive.

However, the 21 st century may be called the age of tremendous scientific progress. We are indebted to science for the modern comforts of life. It has given power and confidence to man. It is a good servant to mankind.

In the final analysis of the given proposition, I tend to think that science has its own barbs and bouquets. If used wisely, it can bring the blossom of betterment, and if used unwisely, it can play havoc and cause a mess on a massive scale.

“Every great advance in science has issued from a new audacity of imagination.” (John Dewey)

Why Is Car Insurance So Expensive?

Soaring premiums have become a prominent driver of inflation, and insurers say that more increases could be on the way. How did it get like this?

  • Share full article

A steady stream of cars drive on a two-way highway that has three lanes on each side.

By Emily Flitter

If your car broke down two years ago, it probably became a bigger problem than you bargained for.

A confluence of forces were to blame: The Covid pandemic disrupted supply chains, pushing used car prices to record highs and making spare parts hard to get; out-of-practice drivers emerging from lockdowns caused more severe wrecks; and technological advancements like motion sensors made even the simplest parts, like a fender or a rim, expensive to replace .

Things have since improved for car owners — except when it comes to insurance bills. Car insurers are still raising prices steeply: The price of motor vehicle insurance rose more than 22 percent in the year through April, the fastest pace since the 1970s, according to a report the Bureau of Labor Statistics on Wednesday. According to calculations by the Insurance Information Institute, a trade group, the average 12-month premium for car insurance was $1,280 in 2023, the industry’s most recent figures.

That has made car insurance a prominent factor preventing overall inflation from cooling more quickly, which could force the Federal Reserve to keep interest rates higher for longer even as the prices for many other essential goods and services have slowed.

Geico recently reported a big jump in quarterly profit on higher premiums and lower customer claims. The share prices of other big auto insurers, like Allstate and Progressive, have beaten the rise in the overall market this year.

That has attracted scrutiny from economists . A key reason car insurance costs are rising so fast right now has to do with how the industry is regulated.

How does insurance regulation work?

Insurers are regulated by the states, not the federal government. In all 50 states, insurance companies must follow specific rules about how and when they can raise the price on their policies.

Each state’s laws are broadly similar, and require insurers to ask regulators for permission to raise prices. Insurers have to make a case — with data to back it up — that the increase is necessary and that they will not make too large a profit on the re-priced policies. This application, known in the business as a “rate filing,” involves complicated paperwork that may take weeks or months to resolve.

The data has to include an analysis of loss trends from the past couple of years, as well as projections for replacement costs and profits. If insurers are deemed to profit too heavily, regulators can make them return money to customers.

The threat of returning money is not an idle one. At the height of pandemic lockdowns in 2020, when many cars sat idle, insurers returned almost $13 billion to customers through dividends, refund checks and premium reductions for policy renewals, according to the insurance ratings agency AM Best.

California was one of the most active states: Insurers there returned $3.2 billion to customers in 2020.

Ricardo Lara, the state’s insurance commissioner, “directed the department to do a very close analysis to make sure that drivers weren’t overcharged,” said Michael Soller, a spokesman for the California Department of Insurance. But starting in late 2021, the state became the poster child for a new problem: an epic backlog of insurers’ requests to raise prices.

How a massive paperwork jam explains rising prices.

When the pandemic shut down most economic activity, it messed up insurers’ ability to use the past to predict the future. For months, they were frozen. They did not submit new rate filings to regulators for a spell — until they did, all at once, in the second half of 2021.

The prices of cars and parts were jumping and drivers were back on the roads and crashing left and right after a hiatus behind the wheel.

“You went from this period of incredible profitability to incredible losses in the blink of an eye,” said Tim Zawacki, an analyst who focuses on insurance at S&P Global Market Intelligence. No companies were willing to stick their necks out by offering lower premiums in the hope of winning new business, he said.

“Everyone was together in significantly pushing for rate increases.”

In California, the most populous U.S. state, insurers were getting creamed by expensive claims.

But the state’s regulator did not start approving insurers’ requests to raise rates until near the end of 2022. The backlog grew so large that the average wait time for approvals was longer — by several months — than the six-month policies that insurers wanted to sell.

“When state regulators delay or prevent companies from accurately pricing insurance, insurers may not be able to absorb the costs,” said Neil Alldredge, the president of the National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies, a trade group that represents many home and auto insurers. The squeeze can lead insurers to leave some states or stop some business lines, he added. “Inefficient regulatory environments in states like California, New Jersey and New York, combined with inflation and increased catastrophic losses, have left consumers with fewer choices of insurers and higher costs,” he said.

California is still the slowest state in the continental United States for auto insurance rate filings, taking an average of 219 days to approve a price proposal for a personal auto policy, according to S&P data provided by Mr. Zawacki.

“We fight for consumers by analyzing all of the data, not just what insurance companies spoon-feed us,” Mr. Soller, the California Department of Insurance spokesman, said.

The S&P analysis showed that New Jersey, the 11th-most populous state, had the sixth-longest wait time, while New York, with the fourth-largest population, had the 7th-longest wait times.

“The department performs a comprehensive review of requests to amend rates or rating systems to ensure compliance with New Jersey law,” said Dawn Thomas, a spokeswoman for the New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance.

Ms. Thomas said the regulator needed to ensure that each proposed premium increase was “reasonable, adequate, and not unfairly discriminatory,” and that sometimes the insurers’ requests needed to be challenged or denied.

A spokeswoman for New York’s regulator declined to comment.

When will the jam clear?

Shortly before the pandemic, the umbrella organization for state insurance regulators, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, formed a team of data scientists to help regulators deal with their rate filings, which has gotten more complicated in recent years.

The data team became fully operational in 2021 and its mission is now to help speed up the review process: 37 states have signed up to use it.

This month, during a call with analysts to discuss Allstate’s earnings, company representatives said they had recently reopened their California auto insurance business after getting permission to charge higher rates. The company still wanted to raise prices in other states.

In New York and New Jersey, for example, “even with the rate approvals that we got late last year, we still don’t feel like we’re at the appropriate rate level to want to grow in those two states,” said Mario Rizzo, the president of Allstate’s property-casualty business.

How much higher will premiums go?

In 2021, insurers’ personal auto businesses started recording losses. According to David Blades, an analyst for AM Best, the industry lost $4 billion in 2021, $33 billion in 2022 and roughly $17 billion last year.

According to Dale Porfilio, the chief insurance officer at the Insurance Information Institute, the trade group, many companies still need to raise prices to make up for those bad years.

Last year, insurers raised auto premiums by 14 percent, the biggest increase in over 15 years. Mr. Porfilio’s best guess is that premiums this year will rise another 13 percent.

“It’s going to take time for every company to get their rates to where they want to be,” he said.
