Program Overview

Humber’s Bachelor of Interior Design degree program balances creativity with sensitive, pragmatic design thinking. Our graduates problem-solve, investigate  and explore design environments where people thrive.

Engaging interior design studios enable you to master an evidence-based design process, develop effective presentation abilities and acquire vital professional practice skills. Team collaboration among student groups mirrors industry team practices.

Observational field trips provide opportunities for you to connect classroom theory, such as the perception of space and human interaction, with built environments. In the fourth year, you will engage with industry mentors to research, develop and document a large-scale interior design project from initial concept to construction documentation.

Additionally, a self-directed volunteer project helps connect your passion for design to the community and the design industry. Students have worked with organizations such as the Toronto District School Board, The Naval Reserves, Habitat for Humanity, and youth and women’s shelters.

Current students, please make sure to review your MyHumber Academic Progress report to confirm which courses you should register into for your Winter semester. Courses with in-person requirements will likely also have online components. Humber may need to change plans for in-person learning, subject to government and public health directives and/or additional health and safety considerations.

Work-Integrated Learning

Work-integrated learning  .

Work-integrated learning courses serve as the vital link between academic learning and real-world application. Within this framework, you will actively participate in the Professional Practice course, equipping you with the necessary skills and confidence to secure your own field experience. Throughout this journey, a dedicated career & work-integrated learning advisor offers personalized guidance and support.

In the summer semester between Years 3 and 4, students immerse themselves in the Field Experience course, committing 420 hours of practical application within the field. Whether pursuing paid or unpaid opportunities, all experiences undergo approval by your career & work-integrated learning advisor to ensure relevance.

Humber Interior Design students had their IMPACT Thesis Show on April 25th. It was an evening where design and creativity took over through real-world projects!

Our learning spaces provide an atmosphere which simulates design studio environments: drafting tables, computer stations, team discussion and presentation areas. An interior design resource room, complete with material samples, computer stations, a lounge area dedicated to the students, sofas, a microwave, layout space, team areas and storage, is available 24/7 with secure access. Whether you're looking to focus on your class assignments, work in the computer lab, research in the library, meet with a teacher, or consult with Career Services, Humber North has everything you need to get started.

The Humber Design Centre features a large, open concept space along with the latest digital imaging and design technologies. With seven open studios, a computer lab and a state-of-the-art resource room, complete with high-end digital cameras to photograph sample boards, the Design Centre is an incredible place to learn and explore.

In response to industry demand, our students are equipped with the workplace skills to compete in the industry immediately upon graduation. This program is designed to meet the standards professional organizations and employers require in either commercial or residential design.

A portfolio is a collection of work which tells us about your creative and problem solving process, your drawing skills and how you present yourself as an artist and designer. The work you present is extremely important in your application. Your portfolio is reviewed by Interior Design faculty to determine your suitability for the program.

Applicants must submit a portfolio that includes four creative pieces. Be sure to title each submission and briefly describe it (maximum 50 words for each piece).

The requirements for these submissions are as follows:

Submission #1  – Perspective line drawing of a chair (two-point perspective). You may use your choice of medium for this piece, however, you are encouraged to work in black line for the chair and to use construction lines to show proper perspective methods. Include a small photograph of the chair you have drawn as part of the submission page.

Submission #2  – Perspective line drawing of an interior space or building façade. This should be from an actual space or building and not from your imagination or an abstract method. You may use your own choice of medium. Include a small photograph of the space or building you have drawn as part of the submission page.

Submission #3  – Colour still life study that demonstrates your use of colour and composition. You are encouraged to group everyday objects such as fruit, small appliances, pottery or shoes. We will assess your representation of realistic details: shade and shadow, depth, tonal value and texture. Include a small photograph of the object(s) you have drawn as part of the submission page.

Submission #4  – Compulsory Submission of Your Choice (one required submission)

Please choose one of the following which you feel describes your work as a designer or artist:

a) Interior design work such as plan/section/elevation and materials board. This may be a school project or something you completed on your own; b) A sculpture or architectural model, or something you designed and fabricated including the conceptual sketches and the finished piece; c) AutoCAD, Sketchup or Revit drawings you feel show your talent as a designer; d) Multiple images from a sketchbook you keep of spaces, places, buildings and objects that inspire you.

Writing Sample

Research and write a 350-word writing sample describing your knowledge and interest in interior design. Refer to current issues in the interior design profession and include any projects, periods or styles, architectural influences, designers or artists whom you feel have influenced either your artistic endeavours or your decision to pursue a career in the design discipline.

Be sure to emphasize your understanding of interior design versus decorating.

humber interior design thesis show

The graduating students of 2024 from Humber College’s Bachelor of Interior Design (INTD) program are currently getting ready to present and share the culmination of the senior interior design thesis projects at the annual year-end show.

The senior thesis students are the first INTD class to have had to navigate the uncertainties of the pandemic throughout the program and transition from online to offline, in-person classes within four years. As a result, the committee has developed the brand “Design Online/Offline” to represent the perseverance and dedication that has led up to this event.

“The efforts of the fourth-year INTD students do not go unnoticed in the research community, as they worked tirelessly through the thesis research papers, many of which are being published, and are supported by the development of final designs that employ the research findings,” reads a release about the showcase.

This show will begin its journey amidst the backdrop of screens, which are compelled by the constraints of the COVID-19 pandemic. This group of students demonstrated resilience both in the “online” realm and within “offline” learning environments. By embracing the online portion of the program, the graduating class has also embraced the landscape of design’s future, while honouring the essence of offline learning.

When April 25, 5:00 - 8:00 PM

Spurts of water shooting out from an outdoor fountain. Ancient Roman columns are behind the fountain.

By The New York Times

This article is part of our Design special section about water as a source of creativity.

For Ancient Roman Baths, a Chance to Sparkle Again

After a 1,500-year dry spell, the Baths of Caracalla in Rome are being restored to their full aquatic splendor. Built in the early third century during the reigns of the emperor Septimius Severus and his son Caracalla, and inagurated in 216, they hosted as many as 8,000 visitors daily until the source of their water was destroyed by the Visigoths in the sixth century.

The renewal of the 25-acre site is a 10-year project overseen by Daniela Porro, the special superintendent of Rome, and Mirella Serlorenzi, the monument’s director. Last month, the first completed phase — the introduction of a 137-by-105-foot shallow reflecting pool known as the Water Mirror, designed by the architects Hannes Peer and Paolo Bornello — opened to the public.

In an email, Mr. Peer described being inspired by the Natatio, an Olympic-size pool in the ancient bath complex. The Water Mirror includes 20 submerged water jets fitted with reflectors that send up delicate, light-infused geysers. A stage that sits nearly flush with the pool’s surface is intended for theatrical performances, lectures and concerts.

Mr. Peer is also involved in redesigning the entrances to the monument, to bring back its connection to the urban fabric, and in adding a botanical garden, refreshment areas and other amenities. The buildings that surrounded the baths, whose walls, colonnades and large open spaces provided inspiration for the former Pennsylvania Station, among other architectural showstoppers, will be restored. “Caracalla,” he said, “is a very comprehensive and complex project.” rome.net/baths-caracalla . — ARLENE HIRST

Adding Zing to History

For their room in this year’s Kips Bay Decorator Show House, Ann Pyne, the president of the interior design firm McMillen, and Elizabeth Pyne Singer, a partner in the firm (and Ms. Pyne’s daughter), took their inspiration from Blair House, the presidential guest house across from the White House. They began with a reproduction of a storied chinoiserie wallpaper that was used in a 1964 restoration of the Lee Drawing Room.

But the women didn’t want to simply recreate the space, designed by Eleanor McMillen Brown, McMillen’s founder. They tweaked the 18th-century style by, for instance, commissioning a textured white-and-metallic mantle from the Brooklyn ceramic artist Peter Lane.

“It’s a matter of having challenging objects with the conservative idea of the wallpaper and Blair House,” Ms. Pyne said. The obvious mantle choice, she added, would have been from the Federal period.

Some of the colors used in the room, including the acid green in the 1950s Italian armchair, amp up the neutral palette favored by Jacqueline Kennedy, who supervised the restoration of Blair House in its early stages, when she was the first lady. According to John S. Botello, a designer who wrote his master’s thesis about Blair House, Mrs. Kennedy thought a suggestion by a decorator to use chartreuse, fuchsia and other zinging colors was inappropriate for a traditional house. A Flowery Revival

No flower, no matter how brilliantly hued or outlandishly petaled, much interests the Polish artist Marcin Rusak until it desiccates. Then the staff at his Warsaw studio embeds it in plastic and metal to form vessels and furniture with drooping and bulging contours, as if the vegetation were still trying to grow.

Through May 24, Carpenters Workshop Gallery in Midtown Manhattan is displaying 10 of his new works in an exhibition, “Vas Florum: Resina Botanica.” On his milky resin vases (priced from $20,000 to $30,000 each), petrified blooms and fronds overlap, as if cast aside by jilted brides or adrift in streams. Amoeba-shaped tables made of resin and bronze (from $90,000 to $120,000 each), with flowers strewn against rust and dark green backgrounds, resemble rocks full of fossils.

Mr. Rusak said that he is particularly interested in how the flower industry has manipulated plants to maximize marketability, whether breeding stems to reduce thorns or dyeing petals in fluorescent colors. When an artificially colored blossom undergoes his embedding processes, pigment streaks can burst from the petals, as if the plant is eagerly shedding its artificial disguise. “It’s a very weird scenario,” Mr. Rusak said; carpentersworkshopgallery.com. — EVE M. Nickey Kehoe Sets Up Shop in the West Village

Relocating to New York can mean an endless real estate slog. For Todd Nickey and Amy Kehoe, the owners of the Los Angeles design studio and home boutique Nickey Kehoe, who were looking to set up their first Manhattan store, the process was remarkably frictionless.

“We were only beginning our search when we stumbled upon it,” said Ms. Kehoe about the mid-19th-century Italianate brownstone in the West Village where they are renting two floors. (The artist Jackson Pollock also resided there early in his career.)

The pair developed a large trade clientele over the years in the New York City area, so it made sense to have a presence there, they said. The shop offers the duo’s branded designs, vintage pieces, globally sourced items and works by other craftspeople — much as in Los Angeles. “We’ve always had an East Coast and a European sensibility,” Mr. Nickey said. Even their California emporium was inspired by 1990s hardware and design shops in New York, where they met.

The upper floor, called the Salon, is dedicated to furniture, lighting, textiles and bespoke objects. The Household section downstairs features more basic items for the pantry, laundry room and garden.

Nickey Kehoe is at 49 East 10th Street, between Broadway and University Place; nickeykehoe.com . — STEPHEN TREFFINGER
