One of the most common college essay supplements will ask you to answer the question: âWhy This College?â These essays are looking to see whether youâre a good fit for the campus community, and whether the college is a good fit for you and your goals.Â
In this post, weâll show you a couple examples of these prompts, go over good and bad sample responses, and break down how to ensure yours is one of the good ones.Â
Letâs start by taking a look at real prompts that fit under the âWhy This College?â archetype:Â
Tufts: Which aspects of the Tufts undergraduate experience prompt your application? In short, âWhy Tufts?â (150 words)
Northwestern: Other parts of your application give us a sense for how you might contribute to Northwestern. But we also want to consider how Northwestern will contribute to your interests and goals. Help us understand what aspects of Northwestern appeal most to you, and how youâll make use of specific resources and opportunities here. (300 words)
As you can see, these prompts are basically asking why you want to attend the school in question. Northwestern spells it out even further, and specifically asks how youâll use their resources to achieve your goals.
Both prompts have word counts that are much shorter than that of the Common App, which is typical of supplemental essays. These two word counts are pretty representative, and you can expect the âWhy This College?â essay length to be 100-400 words on average. Thatâs not a lot of space for a pretty important question, so itâs especially vital to use the word count wisely.
What are colleges looking for in the âWhy Usâ essay?
Colleges want to admit students who will not only enroll (to protect their yield), but also thrive on their campus. They ask this question to see whether youâre truly interested in the school and whether itâs the right place for you. You can write a strong response by citing specific ways the college can support your goals, as well as demonstrating your enthusiasm.
Which colleges have a âWhy This College?â essay?
This is one of the most popular supplements among colleges. Here is a selection of top schools that ask this question:

What kind of writing style should I use?
This is a straightforward question that generally has a short word count, so you donât need to use a narrative form at all. You can simply explain what you like about the school and why, but try to use varied sentence structure and organize the essay around your major goals.Â
You can start your essay with a story if you want, however. For example, if you visited campus and experienced a really interesting course, or sat in on a meeting of a club you liked, this can make for a strong anecdote to begin your essay. Just make sure that whatever story you tell has some substance, and isnât just a narration of how nice it was to walk around campus.
Can I copy and paste my essay for other schools?
Absolutely not. If your essay is general enough to apply to other schools, you know you need to rewrite it. The resources you mention should be highly specific to the college youâre writing about.
Common Mistakes When Writing the âWhy This College?â Essay
The most common mistake students make is listing generic characteristics that could apply to any school. This negatively impacts your application, since it sends the message that you didnât do your research, and arenât truly interested in the school.
Hereâs an example of something NOT to list in your âWhy this college essay.â Weâll take the example of Tufts since we shared the prompt in the beginning.
What NOT to write: Iâm applying to Tufts because of its low student to faculty ratio, the strong math department, and its prime location in Medford, just a hop away from Boston. When I visited campus, the school already felt like home.
This example is bad because many schools have low student to faculty ratios and strong math departments. There are also a ton of schools in or near Boston, many of which have low student to faculty ratios and great math departments too, such as Boston College, Harvard, Northeastern, Boston University, etc. If your statements can apply to other schools, thatâs definitely not a good sign (avoid things like location, weather, size, and ranking).
The student also uses an emotional appeal with the line âit felt like home,â which might sound nice, but it has no substance and can be written for any school. You should definitely avoid making any statements like these.
This example shows that the student really hasnât thought much about their fit with Tufts, and that it probably isnât their top choice. This will impact your application negatively, especially since Tufts is known for taking applicantsâ demonstrated interest more seriously than other schools . So, if you show that you show little interest through your essay, you may end up waitlisted or rejected, even if your stats are excellent.
Another thing that this example gets wrong is that it doesnât describe the studentâs goals or interests at all. Itâs important to not only talk about why you picked the school, but also how exactly those aspects will help you grow. Remember, this kind of prompt is two-fold: in addition to explaining why the school is a good fit for you, you want to show why you, out of the many thousands of applicants they get each year, are a good fit for them.
To summarize, the main mistakes to avoid are:
- Citing generic aspects of the school (location, weather, size, and ranking)
- Using empty emotional appeals
- Not describing your goals and interests
Now that we know what a bad example might look like, hereâs an example of a rewrite to part of the Tufts essay:
What TO write: As a potential Applied Mathematics major, I hope to gain the tools to model political behavior. Iâm especially interested in elections, and am looking forward to taking the course âMathematics of Social Choice,â as the centerpiece of Social Choice Theory is voting. I would also love to take âNonlinear Dynamics and Chaos,â because it will teach me to use differential equations to predict chaotic behavior.Â
This is a good example, as the courses listed are highly-specific to Tufts, as well as the studentâs professional goals. We not only learned something about Tufts, but also the student. Keep in mind that this wouldnât be a complete essayâ âitâs just an example of good, specific resources to list, and how to connect them to your own interests.Â

Prompt: In no more than 250 words, please tell us why BU is a good fit for you and what
specifically has led you to apply for admission.
Boston Universityâs College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) attracts me because of its support of interdisciplinary study among its wide array of majors. In fact, the CAS now offers a course that combines biology, chemistry, and neuroscience. As I hope to conduct medical research into brain disorders, I plan to pursue all three areas of study. These cross-disciplinary connections at BU will prepare me to do so.
CASâs undergraduate research program would allow me to work with a mentor, such as Dr. Alice Cronin-Golomb or Dr. Robert M.G. Reinhart related to their research on neurological disorders. With them, I can advance the work I have already completed related to Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID). In a summer class at our local university, my partner and I extracted data from fMRI and PET studies and inputted them into a coding program. We then created an indicator map, which we imported into another software program, AFNI, to display significant activity in the brain regions affected by DID. Seeing the representation of our data thrilled me because I knew it could eventually help people who live with DID. I want to experience that feeling again. Successfully analyzing these fMRI and PET studies and learning to code drives me to pursue more research opportunities, and this desire motivates me to study at a university that offers research opportunities to undergraduates. BUâs interdisciplinary approach to psychology and support for independent undergraduate undergraduate research will optimally prepare me for a career as a neurological researcher.
This student clearly outlines BU-specific resources (the interdisciplinary course and undergrad research program), plus how these resources align with their professional goals (to become a neurological researcher). They do âname-dropâ professors, but since their work clearly relates to the studentâs interests, it doesnât look disingenuous, and shows that the student has done research on their fit with BU. The student also provides background on why they want to pursue research, and shows that they already have experience, which makes their interest in the undergrad research program more concrete.
The only thing missing from this essay is the studentâs fit with BU in terms of extracurriculars and social life. âWhy This College?â essays should also cover extracurriculars, as the residential college experience is about more than just class and homework. Admissions officers are also interested in how youâll contribute to their broader campus community.
In general, these essays should be academic-leaning (especially if theyâre under 250 words), but you should still address some social aspects of the college that appeal to you (we recommend about 70% academics, 30% social, with more or less focus on social aspects depending on the word count). Since the student probably already detailed their previous research in their Common App activities section, they couldâve just summarized their research background in one sentence, and used the space saved to talk about a specific social aspect of BU that interests them.
Hereâs another sample essay, but for UPenn. This essayâs word count was much longer, so the student was able to really hone in on several specific aspects of UPenn.
Prompt: How will you explore your intellectual and academic interests at the University of Pennsylvania? Please answer this question given the specific undergraduate school to which you are applying (650 words).
Sister Simone Roach, a theorist of nursing ethics, said, âcaring is the human mode of being.â I have long been inspired by Sister Roachâs Five Câs of Caring: commitment, conscience, competence, compassion, and confidence. Penn both embraces and fosters these values through a rigorous, interdisciplinary curriculum and unmatched access to service and volunteer opportunities.
COMMITMENT. Reading through the activities that Penn Quakers devote their time to (in addition to academics!) felt like drinking from a firehose in the best possible way. As a prospective nursing student with interests outside of my major, I value this level of flexibility. I plan to leverage Pennâs liberal arts curriculum to gain an in-depth understanding of the challenges LGBT people face, especially regarding healthcare access. Through courses like âInteractional Processes with LGBT Individualsâ and volunteering at the Mazzoni Center for outreach, I hope to learn how to better support the Penn LGBT community as well as my family and friends, including my cousin, who came out as trans last year.
CONSCIENCE. As one of the first people in my family to attend a four-year university, I wanted a school that promoted a sense of moral responsibility among its students. At Penn, professors challenge their students to question and recreate their own set of morals by sparking thought- provoking, open-minded discussions. I can imagine myself advocating for universal healthcare in courses such as âHealth Care Reform & Future of American Health Systemâ and debating its merits with my peers. Studying in an environment where students confidently voice their opinions â conservative or liberal â will push me to question and strengthen my value system.
COMPETENCE. Two aspects that drew my attention to Pennâs BSN program were its high-quality research opportunities and hands-on nursing projects. Through its Office of Nursing Research, Penn connects students to faculty members who share similar research interests. As I volunteered at a nursing home in high school, I hope to work with Dr. Carthon to improve the quality of care for senior citizens. Seniors, especially minorities, face serious barriers to healthcare that I want to resolve. Additionally, Pennâs unique use of simulations to bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world application impressed me. Using computerized manikins that mimic human responses, classes in Pennâs nursing program allow students to apply their emergency medical skills in a mass casualty simulation and monitor their actions afterward through a video system. Participating in this activity will help me identify my strengths and areas for improvement regarding crisis management and medical care in a controlled yet realistic setting. Research opportunities and simulations will develop my skills even before I interact with patients.
COMPASSION. I value giving back through community service, and I have a particular interest in Pennâs Community Champions and Nursing Students For Sexual & Reproductive Health (NSRH). As a four-year volunteer health educator, I hope to continue this work as a Community Champions member. I am excited to collaborate with medical students to teach fourth and fifth graders in the city about cardiology or lead a chair dance class for the elders at the LIFE Center. Furthermore, as a feminist who firmly believes in womenâs abortion rights, Iâd like to join NSRH in order to advocate for womenâs health on campus. At Penn, I can work with like-minded people to make a meaningful difference.
CONFIDENCE. All of the Quakers that I have met possess one defining trait: confidence. Each student summarized their experiences at Penn as challenging but fulfilling. Although I expect my coursework to push me, from my conversations with current Quakers I know it will help me to be far more effective in my career.
The Five Câs of Caring are important heuristics for nursing, but they also provide insight into how I want to approach my time in college. I am eager to engage with these principles both as a nurse and as a Penn Quaker, and I canât wait to start.
This student takes a creative approach to the essay, by using the Five Câs of Caring as a framework. This technique works especially well since these qualities relate to the studentâs future career in nursing. In addition to emphasizing the studentâs creativity and passion for nursing, having the Five Câs in all caps at the start of each paragraph gives this long essay a clear, easy-to-read format.
What really makes the essay stand out is the depth of the studentâs fit with UPenn, and how theyâre able to also share more about who they are. The student lists specific courses, research opportunities, technology, and student groups. We also learn that they are a first-generation student, are passionate about increasing access to healthcare (particularly for LGBTQ+ people, minorities, and the elderly), care about health education, and are a feminist who staunchly defends abortion rights (this controversial topic could be risky, but since UPenn is a very liberal school, this should be fine).
Overall, this essay paints a vivid picture of how the student would engage academically at Penn, and we also see clearly how the student would pursue their intellectual passions outside the classroom. Since this essay prompt focused on âintellectual and academic interests,â there was no need to address other aspects of UPenn beyond those supporting their various interests in healthcare.

Brainstorming for the âWhy This College?â Essay
Now that weâve gone through a couple examples, you might be wondering how to get started yourself.Â
Here are three steps we recommend to get your essay underway:
- Reflect on your academic and career goals
- Research unique opportunities related to your academic and extracurricular interests
- Pick your top academic reasons for applying, and your top extracurricular/social reasons
1. Reflect on your academic and career goals.
The driver behind this essay needs to be you , and not the school itself. Anyone can write nice things about the college, but only you can explain why you would be a good fit for it.
Ask yourself:
- What do you want to major in, if you know? If youâre undecided, what are the subjects youâre interested in?
- Which career do you want to pursue, or what are the potential options?
- What do you want to get out of college? Any particular skills or experiences?
Once you have a clear idea of your college plan, then you can dig into how the college can support your plan.
2. Research unique opportunities related to your academic, career, and extracurricular interests.
You might be wondering where you can find all these specific courses, clubs, and other resources. The schoolâs website is a good place to start, or if you have a general idea of what youâre looking for, you can even use Google with the school name in your search, such as âTufts orchestra.âÂ
Take a look at the website of your department/major and dig into the courses, fellowships, internships, and other resources. For course syllabi, you can visit the website of the professor whoâs teaching the course; theyâll often post more detailed information than the online course catalog, including readings and concepts to be covered.
Clubs may have their own websites, but you can also try to find their Facebook groups or Instagram pages, which might be more current and even show events theyâre hostingâ .
If you can, try to speak with a current student. Your school counselor may be able to connect you with one, or you can also reach out to the admissions office to see if they can connect you. If not, speaking with an admissions officer is also great, or you can try to find day-in-the-life videos on YouTube.
3. Pick your top academic reasons for applying, and your top extracurricular/social reasons.
Once youâve done your research and found specific opportunities to cite in your essay, pick your top 1-3 academic reasons and top 1-3 extracurricular ones, depending on the word count. Going back to the Tufts essay, the good example we gave actually was already 65 words, and it was only able to mention two courses.Â
Keep in mind that you not only have to describe resources specific to the school, but also how theyâll contribute to your goals. This personal aspect is just as important as the actual opportunities, so be sure to allot space to describe why exactly these resources make the school a good fit for you.
When it comes to academic reasons, you are free to list anything from special programs to unique majors to specific courses and professors. We want to caution you against âname-droppingâ professors, howeverâ âunless their work actually fits with your established interests and professional goals. Otherwise, it might seem like youâre being disingenuous.
We also want to reiterate that you should be sure to not only talk about academics in your essay, but also extracurriculars (unless the prompt asks you to focus only on academics, or if the word count is unusually short, i.e. 150 words or fewer). Again, college isnât just about what you do in the classroom. Admissions committees want to be sure that accepted students will also contribute to the college community.Â
Outlining Your âWhy This College?â Essay
Once youâve identified your goals and the resources to support them, itâs time to start writing. An easy format/outline for your essay would be:
- Introduction to your main goals and the why behind them (great spot for an anecdote).Â
- Your first goal and how the school can support it.
- Your second goal and how the school can support it.
- Conclusion where you look towards the future and reaffirm how the college can get you there.
You can adjust the length of the essay by adding or subtracting the number of goals you write about. As noted above, r emember to include extracurriculars when sharing how the college can support your goals. You should plan to spend about 70% of your space on academic reasons, and 30% on extracurricular reasons.
Some students choose to use a more unconventional format, like the Five Câs of Caring essay above, and that works too if you want to show off your creative writing skills. Some examples include a letter to the school or a schedule of your day as a student at the college. These unconventional formats can be harder to pull off though, so only go that route if youâre confident in your writing. The letter format can be especially tricky since itâs easy to sound cheesy and overenthusiastic.
Regardless of the format you choose, remember these two things that your essay should do. It should:
- Reveal more about your goals and interests.
- D escribe how the school can help you develop your interests and reach your goals, by naming highly-specific and unique campus resources, both academic and extracurricular.
If your essay checks both of those boxes, youâre well on your way to making your candidacy more compelling to admissions officers!

Given the purpose of an essay is generally to present a logical and reasoned argument, investing time in organising arguments, ideas, and structure would seem to be time well spent.
Given that essays can take a wide range of forms and that we all have our own individual approaches to writing, it stands to reason that there will be no single best approach to the planning stage of essay writing. That said, there are several helpful hints and techniques we can share with our students to help them wrestle their ideas into a writable form. Letâs take a look at a few of the best of these:
BREAK THE QUESTION DOWN: UNDERSTAND YOUR ESSAY TOPIC.
Whether students are tackling an assignment that you have set for them in class or responding to an essay prompt in an exam situation, they should get into the habit of analyzing the nature of the task. To do this, they should unravel the question’s meaning or prompt. Students can practice this in class by responding to various essay titles, questions, and prompts, thereby gaining valuable experience breaking these down.
Have students work in groups to underline and dissect the keywords and phrases and discuss what exactly is being asked of them in the task. Are they being asked to discuss, describe, persuade, or explain? Understanding the exact nature of the task is crucial before going any further in the planning process, never mind the writing process .
BRAINSTORM AND MIND MAP WHAT YOU KNOW:
Once students have understood what the essay task asks them, they should consider what they know about the topic and, often, how they feel about it. When teaching essay writing, we so often emphasize that it is about expressing our opinions on things, but for our younger students what they think about something isnât always obvious, even to themselves.
Brainstorming and mind-mapping what they know about a topic offers them an opportunity to uncover not just what they already know about a topic, but also gives them a chance to reveal to themselves what they think about the topic. This will help guide them in structuring their research and, later, the essay they will write . When writing an essay in an exam context, this may be the only âresearchâ the student can undertake before the writing, so practicing this will be even more important.
RESEARCH YOUR ESSAY
The previous step above should reveal to students the general direction their research will take. With the ubiquitousness of the internet, gone are the days of students relying on a single well-thumbed encyclopaedia from the school library as their sole authoritative source in their essay. If anything, the real problem for our students today is narrowing down their sources to a manageable number. Students should use the information from the previous step to help here. At this stage, it is important that they:
â Ensure the research material is directly relevant to the essay task
â Record in detail the sources of the information that they will use in their essay
â Engage with the material personally by asking questions and challenging their own biases
â Identify the key points that will be made in their essay
â Group ideas, counterarguments, and opinions together
â Identify the overarching argument they will make in their own essay.
Once these stages have been completed the student is ready to organise their points into a logical order.
WRITING YOUR ESSAY
There are a number of ways for students to organize their points in preparation for writing. They can use graphic organizers , post-it notes, or any number of available writing apps. The important thing for them to consider here is that their points should follow a logical progression. This progression of their argument will be expressed in the form of body paragraphs that will inform the structure of their finished essay.
The number of paragraphs contained in an essay will depend on a number of factors such as word limits, time limits, the complexity of the question etc. Regardless of the essayâs length, students should ensure their essay follows the Rule of Three in that every essay they write contains an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion.
Generally speaking, essay paragraphs will focus on one main idea that is usually expressed in a topic sentence that is followed by a series of supporting sentences that bolster that main idea. The first and final sentences are of the most significance here with the first sentence of a paragraph making the point to the reader and the final sentence of the paragraph making the overall relevance to the essayâs argument crystal clear.
Though students will most likely be familiar with the broad generic structure of essays, it is worth investing time to ensure they have a clear conception of how each part of the essay works, that is, of the exact nature of the task it performs. Letâs review:
Common Essay Structure
Introduction: Provides the reader with context for the essay. It states the broad argument that the essay will make and informs the reader of the writerâs general perspective and approach to the question.
Body Paragraphs: These are the âmeatâ of the essay and lay out the argument stated in the introduction point by point with supporting evidence.
Conclusion: Usually, the conclusion will restate the central argument while summarising the essayâs main supporting reasons before linking everything back to the original question.

One Piece at a Time: There is a lot to look out for in the editing process and often students overlook aspects as they try to juggle too many balls during the process. Let It Breathe: When possible, encourage students to allow some time for their essay to âbreatheâ before returning to it for editing purposes. This may require some skilful time management on the part of the student, for example, a student rush-writing the night before the deadline does not lend itself to effective editing. Fresh eyes are one of the sharpest tools in the writerâs toolbox.
Read It Aloud: This time-tested editing method is a great way for students to identify mistakes and typos in their work. We tend to read things more slowly when reading aloud giving us the time to spot errors. Also, when we read silently our minds can often fill in the gaps or gloss over the mistakes that will become apparent when we read out loud.
Phone a Friend: Peer editing is another great way to identify errors that our brains may miss when reading our own work. Encourage students to partner up for a little âyou scratch my back, I scratch yoursâ.
Use Tech Tools: We need to ensure our students have the mental tools to edit their own work and for this they will need a good grasp of English grammar and punctuation. However, there are also a wealth of tech tools such as spellcheck and grammar checks that can offer a great once-over option to catch anything students may have missed in earlier editing rounds.

Students can go online to review essay requirements for the colleges they want to apply to, such as word limits and essay topics. Many students may start with the Common App, an application platform accepted by more than 1,000 schools.
For college applicants, the essay is the place to showcase their writing skills and let their unique voice shine through.
"The essays are important in part because this is a student's chance to really speak directly to the admissions office," says Adam Sapp, assistant vice president and director of admissions at Pomona College in California.
Prospective college students want their essay, sometimes called a personal statement, to make a good impression and boost their chances of being accepted, but they have only several hundred words to make that happen.
This can feel like a lot of pressure.
"I think this is the part of the application process that students are sometimes most challenged by," says Niki Barron, associate dean of admission at Hamilton College in New York, "because they're looking at a blank piece of paper and they don't know where to get started."
That pressure may be amplified as many colleges have gone test optional in recent years, meaning that ACT and SAT scores will be considered if submitted but are not required. Other schools have gone test-blind and don't consider such scores at all. In the absence of test scores, some admissions experts have suggested that more attention will be paid to other parts of an application, such as the essay.
But just as each applicant is unique, so are college admissions policies and priorities.
"Being test optional hasn't changed how we use essays in our selection process, and I wouldn't say that the essay serves as a substitute for standardized test scores," Barron wrote in an email. "A student's academic preparation for our classroom experience is always front and center in our application review process."
On June 29, 2023, the Supreme Court ruled against college admissions policies that consider an applicant's race. The ruling, though, does not prohibit students from writing essays on how their race has affected them, which experts say could significantly affect how students approach this portion of their applications.
Essay-writing tips offered by experts emphasize the importance of being concise, coherent, congenial, unique, honest and accurate. An applicant should also flex some intellectual muscle and include vivid details or anecdotes.
From brainstorming essay topics to editing the final draft, here's what students need to know about crafting a strong college application essay.
Getting Started on the College Essay
How long should a college essay be, how to pick a college essay topic, writing the college essay, how the affirmative action ruling could change college essays, editing and submitting the college essay.
A good time for students to begin working on their essays is the summer before senior year, experts say, when homework and extracurricular activities aren't taking up time and mental energy.
Starting early will also give students plenty of time to work through multiple drafts of an essay before college application deadlines, which can be as early as November for students applying for early decision or early action .
Students can go online to review essay requirements for the colleges they want to apply to, such as word limits and essay topics. Many students may start with the Common App , an application platform accepted by more than 1,000 schools. Students can submit that application to multiple schools.
Another option is the Coalition Application, an application platform accepted by more than 130 schools. Students applying through this application choose from one of six essay prompts to complete and include with their application.
In addition to the main essay, some colleges ask applicants to submit one or more additional writing samples. Students are often asked to explain why they are interested in a particular school or academic field in these supplemental essays , which tend to be shorter than the main essay.
Students should budget more time for the writing process if the schools they're applying to ask for supplemental essays.
"Most selective colleges will ask for more than one piece of writing. Don't spend all your time working on one long essay and then forget to devote energy to other parts of the application," Sapp says.
Though the Common App notes that "there are no strict word limits" for its main essay, it suggests a cap of about 650 words. The Coalition Application website says its essays should be between 500 and 650 words.
"While we won't, as a rule, stop reading after 650 words, we cannot promise that an overly wordy essay will hold our attention for as long as you'd hoped it would," the Common App website states.
The word count is much shorter for institution-specific supplemental essays, which are typically around 250 words.
The first and sometimes most daunting step in the essay writing process is figuring out what to write about.
There are usually several essay prompts to choose from on a college application. They tend to be broad, open-ended questions, giving students the freedom to write about a wide array of topics, Barron says.
The essay isn't a complete autobiography, notes Mimi Doe, co-founder of Top Tier Admissions, a Massachusetts-based advising company. "It's overwhelming to think of putting your whole life in one essay," she says.
Rather, experts say students should narrow their focus and write about a specific experience, hobby or quirk that reveals something personal, like how they think, what they value or what their strengths are. Students can also write about something that illustrates an aspect of their background. These are the types of essays that typically stand out to admissions officers, experts say. Even an essay on a common topic can be compelling if done right.
Students don't have to discuss a major achievement in their essay â a common misconception. Admissions officers who spoke with U.S. News cited memorable essays that focused on more ordinary topics, including fly-fishing, a student's commute to and from school and a family's dining room table.
What's most important, experts say, is that a college essay is thoughtful and tells a story that offers insight into who a student is as a person.
"Think of the college essay as a meaningful glimpse of who you are beyond your other application materials," Pierre Huguet, CEO and founder of admissions consulting firm H&C Education, wrote in an email. "After reading your essay, the reader won't fully know you â at least not entirely. Your objective is to evoke the reader's curiosity and make them eager to get to know you."
If students are having trouble brainstorming potential topics, they can ask friends or family members for help, says Stephanie Klein Wassink, founder of Winning Applications and AdmissionsCheckup, Connecticut-based college admissions advising companies. Klein Wassink says students can ask peers or family members questions such as, "What are the things you think I do well?" Or, "What are my quirks?"
The essay should tell college admissions officers something they don't already know, experts say.
Some experts encourage students to outline their essay before jumping into the actual writing, though of course everyone's writing process differs.
The first draft of an essay doesn't need to be perfect. "Just do a brain dump," Doe says. "Don't edit yourself, just lay it all out on the page."
If students are having a hard time getting started, they should focus on their opening sentence, Doe suggests. She says an essay's opening sentence, or hook, should grab the reader's attention.
Doe offered an example of a strong hook from the essay of a student she worked with:
"I first got into politics the day the cafeteria outlawed creamed corn."
"I want to know about this kid," she says. "Iâm interested."
The key to a good college essay is striking a balance between being creative and not overdoing it, Huguet says. He advises students to keep it simple.
"The college essay is not a fiction writing contest," Huguet says. "Admissions committees are not evaluating you on your potential as the next writer of the Great American Novel."
He adds that students should write in the voice they use to discuss meaningful topics with someone they trust. It's also wise to avoid hyperbole, as that can lose the readers' trust, as well as extraneous adverbs and adjectives, Huguet says.
"Thinking small, when done right, means paying close attention to the little things in your life that give it meaning in unique ways," he says. "It means, on the one hand, that you donât have to come up with a plan for world peace, but it also means thinking small enough to identify details in your life that belong only to you."
The Supreme Court's ruling on affirmative action has left some students feeling in limbo with how to approach their essays. Some are unsure whether to include racial identifiers while others feel pressure to exclude it, says Christopher Rim, CEO and founder of Command Education, an admissions consulting company.
"For instance, some of our Asian students have been concerned that referencing their culture or race in their essay could negatively impact them (even moreso than before)," Rim wrote in an email. He noted that many students he works with had already begun crafting their essays before the ruling came. "Some of our other students have felt pressure to disclose their race or share a story of discrimination or struggle because they expect those stories to be received better by admissions officers."
Some of the uneasiness stems from what feels like a contradictory message from the court, Rim says. In his majority opinion, Chief Justice John Roberts Jr., said the ruling shouldn't be construed "as prohibiting universities from considering an applicantâs discussion of how race affected his or her life, be it through discrimination, inspiration, or otherwise." But he added that colleges may consider race only if it's tied to an applicantâs individual experiences or qualities, such as demonstrating courage against discrimination.
Personal essays shouldn't serve as a way for universities to ask students about their race as a means to admit them on such basis, Roberts added.
Rim says he expects there to be a lot of confusion from parents and students as they navigate that line when writing their essay. He says his guidance will vary with each student depending on their specific situation.
"For a student from an immigrant family, sharing their racial and cultural background may be integral to understanding their identity and values and therefore should be included in the essay," he says. "On the other hand, a student who has never meaningfully considered ways in which their race has shaped their life experience and worldview should not push themselves to do so in their essay simply because they believe it will better their chances."
While admissions officers try to learn about students via the essay, they are also gauging writing skills, so students want to make sure they submit top-notch work.
"The best writing is rewriting," Sapp says. "You should never be giving me your first draft."
When reviewing a first essay draft, students should make sure their writing is showing, not telling, Huguet says. This means students should show their readers examples that prove they embody certain traits or beliefs, as opposed to just stating that they do. Doing so is like explaining a joke to someone who's already laughed at it, he says.
"Letâs say, for example, that the whole point of a certain applicantâs essay is to let admissions officers know that she thinks outside the box. If she feels the need to end her essay with a sentence like, 'And so, this anecdote shows that I think outside the box,' sheâs either underestimating the power of her story (or the ability of her reader to understand it), or she hasnât done a good enough job in telling it yet," Huguet says. "Let your readers come to their own conclusions. If your story is effective, theyâll come to the conclusions you want them to."
After editing their essay, students should seek outside editing help, experts recommend. While there are individuals and companies that offer paid essay help â from editing services to essay-writing boot camps â students and families may not be able to afford the associated fees. Some providers may offer scholarships or other financial aid for their services.
The availability and level of feedback from free essay advising services vary. Some college prep companies offer brief consultations at no charge. Free essay workshops may also be available through local high schools, public libraries or community organizations. Khan Academy, a free online education platform, also offers a series of videos and other content to guide students through the essay writing process.
Colleges themselves may also have resources, Barron notes, pointing to pages on Hamilton's website that offer writing tips as well as examples of successful admissions essays. Likewise, Hamilton also holds virtual panel discussions on writing admissions essays.
Students have other options when it comes to essay help. They can ask peers, teachers, school counselors and family members for help polishing an essay. Huguet says it's typically wise to prioritize quality over quantity when it comes to seeking feedback on essays. Too many perspectives can become counterproductive, he says.
"While it can be valuable to have different perspectives, it's best to seek out individuals who are experts in the writing process," he says. "Instructors or professors can be helpful, particularly if they possess subject expertise and can provide guidance on refining arguments, structure and overall coherence."
Proofreaders should not change the tone of the essay. "Don't let anyone edit out your voice," Doe cautions.
And while proofreading is fair game, having someone else write your essay is not.
When an essay is ready to go, students will generally submit it online along with the rest of their application. On the Common App, for example, students copy and paste their essay into a text box.
Sapp says even though students often stress about the essay in particular, it's not the only thing college admissions officers look at. "The essay is the window, but the application is the house," he says. "So let's not forget that an application is built of many pieces."

What is an essay?
Generally speaking, an essay designates a literary work in which the author defends a point of view or a personal conviction, using logical arguments and literary devices in order to inform and convince the reader.
So â although essays can be broadly split into four categories: argumentative, expository, narrative, and descriptive â an essay can simply be described as a focused piece of writing designed to inform or persuade. đ€
The purpose of an essay is to present a coherent argument in response to a stimulus or question and to persuade the reader that your position is credible, believable and reasonable. đ
So, a âgoodâ essay relies on a confident writing style â itâs clear, well-substantiated, focussed, explanatory and descriptive . The structure follows a logical progression and above all, the body of the essay clearly correlates to the tile â answering the question where one has been posed.
But, how do you go about making sure that you tick all these boxes and keep within a specified word count? Read on for the answer as well as an example essay structure to follow and a handy step-by-step guide to writing the perfect essay â hooray. đ
Sometimes, it is helpful to think about your essay like it is a well-balanced argument or a speech â it needs to have a logical structure, with all your points coming together to answer the question in a coherent manner. âïž
Of course, essays can vary significantly in length but besides that, they all follow a fairly strict pattern or structure made up of three sections. Lean into this predictability because it will keep you on track and help you make your point clearly. Letâs take a look at the typical essay structure:
#1 Introduction
Start your introduction with the central claim of your essay. Let the reader know exactly what you intend to say with this essay. Communicate what youâre going to argue, and in what order. The final part of your introduction should also say what conclusions youâre going to draw â it sounds counter-intuitive but itâs not â more on that below. 1ïžâŁ
Make your point, evidence it and explain it. This part of the essay â generally made up of three or more paragraphs depending on the length of your essay â is where you present your argument. The first sentence of each paragraph â much like an introduction to an essay â should summarise what your paragraph intends to explain in more detail. 2ïžâŁ
#3 Conclusion
This is where you affirm your argument â remind the reader what you just proved in your essay and how you did it. This section will sound quite similar to your introduction but â having written the essay â youâll be summarising rather than setting out your stall. 3ïžâŁ

This is the most crucial stage in essay writing â r ead the essay prompt carefully and understand the question. Highlight the keywords â like âcompare,â âcontrastâ âdiscuss,â âexplainâ or âevaluateâ â and let it sink in before your mind starts racing . There is nothing worse than writing 500 words before realising you have entirely missed the brief . đ§
Unless you are writing under exam conditions , you will most likely have been working towards this essay for some time, by doing thorough background reading. Re-read relevant chapters and sections, highlight pertinent material and maybe even stray outside the designated reading list, this shows genuine interest and extended knowledge. đ
#3 Make a detailed plan
Following the handy structure we shared with you above, now is the time to create the âskeleton structureâ or essay plan. Working from your essay title, plot out what you want your paragraphs to cover and how that information is going to flow. You donât need to start writing any full sentences yet but it might be useful to think about the various quotes you plan to use to substantiate each section. đ
Having mapped out the overall trajectory of your essay, you can start to drill down into the detail. First, write the opening sentence for each of the paragraphs in the body section of your essay. Remember â each paragraph is like a mini-essay â the opening sentence should summarise what the paragraph will then go on to explain in more detail. đïž
Next, it's time to write the bulk of your words and flesh out your arguments. Follow the âpoint, evidence, explainâ method. The opening sentences â already written â should introduce your âpointsâ, so now you need to âevidenceâ them with corroborating research and âexplainâ how the evidence youâve presented proves the point youâre trying to make. âïž
With a rough draft in front of you, you can take a moment to read what you have written so far. Are there any sections that require further substantiation? Have you managed to include the most relevant material you originally highlighted in your background reading? Now is the time to make sure you have evidenced all your opinions and claims with the strongest quotes, citations and material. đ
This is your final chance to re-read your essay and go over it with a fine-toothed comb before pressing âsubmitâ. We highly recommend leaving a day or two between finishing your essay and the final proofread if possible â youâll be amazed at the difference this makes, allowing you to return with a fresh pair of eyes and a more discerning judgment. đ€

Notice how each body paragraph begins with a topic sentence, followed by further explanation and examples.
Step 5. Write the concluding paragraph.
The concluding paragraph is best written by paraphrasing the points made in your introductory paragraph. Avoid copying and pasting; instead, refer back to your introductory paragraph and restate the points in a new way. Letâs apply this method to our sample essay:
âSchools greatly influence our formative years through their unique characteristics. Greenfield High, with its emphasis on community, innovative teaching methods, and commitment to the arts, has shaped my educational journey in significant ways. Its strong sense of community has instilled in me the importance of cooperation and service. Its innovative teaching methods have fostered my intellectual curiosity. Finally, its dedication to the arts has allowed me to express myself creatively and grow my confidence.â
With this approach, writing the conclusion becomes quick and straightforward.

What's the College Essay?
When we say âThe College Essayâ (capitalization for emphasis â say it out loud with the capitals and youâll know what we mean) weâre talking about the 550-650 word essay required by most colleges and universities. Prompts for this essay can be found on the collegeâs website, the Common Application, or the Coalition Application. Weâre not talking about the many smaller supplemental essays you might need to write in order to apply to college. Not all institutions require the essay, but most colleges and universities that are at least semi-selective do.
How do I get started?
Look for the prompts on whatever application youâre using to apply to schools (almost all of the time â with a few notable exceptions â this is the Common Application). If one of them calls out to you, awesome! You can jump right in and start to brainstorm. If none of them are giving you the right vibes, donât worry. Theyâre so broad that almost anything you write can fit into one of the prompts after youâre done. Working backwards like this is totally fine and can be really useful!

What if I have writer's block?
You arenât alone. Staring at a blank Google Doc and thinking about how this is the one chance to tell an admissions officer your story can make you freeze. Thinking about some of these questions might help you find the right topic:
- What is something about you that people have pointed out as distinctive?
- If you had to pick three words to describe yourself, what would they be? What are things youâve done that demonstrate these qualities?
- Whatâs something about you that has changed over your years in high school? How or why did it change?
- Whatâs something you like most about yourself?
- Whatâs something you love so much that you lose track of the rest of the world while you do it?
If youâre still stuck on a topic, ask your family members, friends, or other trusted adults: whatâs something they always think about when they think about you? Whatâs something they think you should be proud of? They might help you find something about yourself that you wouldnât have surfaced on your own. Â
How do I grab my reader's attention?
Itâs no secret that admissions officers are reading dozens â and sometimes hundreds â of essays every day. That can feel like a lot of pressure to stand out. But if you try to write the most unique essay in the world, it might end up seeming forced if itâs not genuinely you. So, whatâs there to do? Our advice: start your essay with a story. Tell the reader about something youâve done, complete with sensory details, and maybe even dialogue. Then, in the second paragraph, back up and tell us why this story is important and what it tells them about you and the theme of the essay.
THE WORD LIMIT IS SO LIMITING. HOW DO I TELL A COLLEGE MY WHOLE LIFE STORY IN 650 WORDS?
Donât! Donât try to tell an admissions officer about everything youâve loved and done since you were a child. Instead, pick one or two things about yourself that youâre hoping to get across and stick to those. Theyâll see the rest on the activities section of your application.
I'M STUCK ON THE CONCLUSION. HELP?
If you canât think of another way to end the essay, talk about how the qualities youâve discussed in your essays have prepared you for college. Try to wrap up with a sentence that refers back to the story you told in your first paragraph, if you took that route.
SHOULD I PROOFREAD MY ESSAY?
YES, proofread the essay, and have a trusted adult proofread it as well. Know that any suggestions they give you are coming from a good place, but make sure they arenât writing your essay for you or putting it into their own voice. Admissions officers want to hear the voice of you, the applicant. Before you submit your essay anywhere, our number one advice is to read it out loud to yourself. When you read out loud youâll catch small errors you may not have noticed before, and hear sentences that arenât quite right.
ANY OTHER ADVICE?
Be yourself. If youâre not a naturally serious person, donât force formality. If youâre the comedian in your friend group, go ahead and be funny. But ultimately, write as your authentic (and grammatically correct) self and trust the process.

What Iâve Learned From My Studentsâ College Essays
The genre is often maligned for being formulaic and melodramatic, but itâs more important than you think.

Most high school seniors approach the college essay with dread. Either their upbringing hasnât supplied them with several hundred words of adversity, or worse, theyâre afraid that packaging the genuine trauma theyâve experienced is the only way to secure their future. The college counselor at the Brooklyn high school where Iâm a writing tutor advises against trauma porn. âKeep it brief , â she says, âand show how you rose above it.â
I started volunteering in New York City schools in my 20s, before I had kids of my own. At the time, I liked hanging out with teenagers, whom I sometimes had more interesting conversations with than I did my peers. Often I worked with students who spoke English as a second language or who used slang in their writing, and at first I was hung up on grammar. Should I correct any deviation from âstandard Englishâ to appeal to some Wizard of Oz behind the curtains of a college admissions office? Or should I encourage students to write the way they speak, in pursuit of an authentic voice, that most elusive of literary qualities?
In fact, I was missing the point. One of many lessons the students have taught me is to let the story dictate the voice of the essay. A few years ago, I worked with a boy who claimed to have nothing to write about. His life had been ordinary, he said; nothing had happened to him. I asked if he wanted to try writing about a family member, his favorite school subject, a summer job? He glanced at his phone, his posture and expression suggesting that heâd rather be anywhere but in front of a computer with me. âHobbies?â I suggested, without much hope. He gave me a shy glance. âI like to box,â he said.
Iâve had this experience with reluctant writers again and again â when a topic clicks with a student, an essay can unfurl spontaneously. Of course the primary goal of a college essay is to help its author get an education that leads to a career. Changes in testing policies and financial aid have made applying to college more confusing than ever, but essays have remained basically the same. I would argue that theyâre much more than an onerous task or rote exercise, and that unlike standardized tests they are infinitely variable and sometimes beautiful. College essays also provide an opportunity to learn precision, clarity and the process of working toward the truth through multiple revisions.
When a topic clicks with a student, an essay can unfurl spontaneously.
Even if writing doesnât end up being fundamental to their future professions, students learn to choose language carefully and to be suspicious of the first words that come to mind. Especially now, as college students shoulder so much of the countryâs ethical responsibility for war with their protest movement, essay writing teaches prospective students an increasingly urgent lesson: that choosing their own words over ready-made phrases is the only reliable way to ensure theyâre thinking for themselves.
Teenagers are ideal writers for several reasons. Theyâre usually free of preconceptions about writing, and they tend not to use self-consciously ââliteraryââ language. Theyâre allergic to hypocrisy and are generally unfiltered: They overshare, ask personal questions and call you out for microaggressions as well as less egregious (but still mortifying) verbal errors, such as referring to weed as ââpot.ââ Most important, they have yet to put down their best stories in a finished form.
I can imagine an essay taking a risk and distinguishing itself formally â a poem or a one-act play â but most kids use a more straightforward model: a hook followed by a narrative built around âsmall momentsâ that lead to a concluding lesson or aspiration for the future. I never get tired of working with students on these essays because each one is different, and the short, rigid form sometimes makes an emotional story even more powerful. Before I read Javier Zamoraâs wrenching âSolito,â I worked with a student who had been transported by a coyote into the U.S. and was reunited with his mother in the parking lot of a big-box store. I donât remember whether this essay focused on specific skills or coping mechanisms that he gained from his ordeal. I remember only the bliss of the parent-and-child reunion in that uninspiring setting. If I were making a case to an admissions officer, I would suggest that simply being able to convey that experience demonstrates the kind of resilience that any college should admire.
The essays that have stayed with me over the years donât follow a pattern. There are some narratives on very predictable topics â living up to the expectations of immigrant parents, or suffering from depression in 2020 â that are moving because of the attention with which the student describes the experience. One girl determined to become an engineer while watching her father build furniture from scraps after work; a boy, grieving for his mother during lockdown, began taking pictures of the sky.
If, as Lorrie Moore said, âa short story is a love affair; a novel is a marriage,â what is a college essay? Every once in a while I sit down next to a student and start reading, and I have to suppress my excitement, because there on the Google Doc in front of me is a real writerâs voice. One of the first students I ever worked with wrote about falling in love with another girl in dance class, the absolute magic of watching her move and the terror in the conflict between her feelings and the instruction of her religious middle school. She made me think that college essays are less like love than limerence: one-sided, obsessive, idiosyncratic but profound, the first draft of the most personal story their writers will ever tell.

The personal statement might just be the hardest part of your college application. Mostly this is because it has the least guidance and is the most open-ended. What Excellent College Essays Have in Common
Even though in many ways these sample college essays are very different from one other, they do share some traits you should try to emulate as you write your own essay.
Visible Signs of Planning
Building out from a narrow, concrete focus. You'll see a similar structure in many of the essays. The author starts with a very detailed story of an event or description of a person or place. After this sense-heavy imagery, the essay expands out to make a broader point about the author, and connects this very memorable experience to the author's present situation, state of mind, newfound understanding, or maturity level.
Knowing how to tell a story. Some of the experiences in these essays are one-of-a-kind. But most deal with the stuff of everyday life. What sets them apart is the way the author approaches the topic: analyzing it for drama and humor, for its moving qualities, for what it says about the author's world, and for how it connects to the author's emotional life.
Stellar Execution
A killer first sentence. You've heard it before, and you'll hear it again: you have to suck the reader in, and the best place to do that is the first sentence. Great first sentences are punchy. They are like cliffhangers, setting up an exciting scene or an unusual situation with an unclear conclusion, in order to make the reader want to know more. Don't take my word for itâcheck out these 22 first sentences from Stanford applicants and tell me you don't want to read the rest of those essays to find out what happens!
A lively, individual voice. Writing is for readers. In this case, your reader is an admissions officer who has read thousands of essays before yours and will read thousands after. Your goal? Don't bore your reader. Use interesting descriptions, stay away from clichĂ©s, include your own offbeat observationsâanything that makes this essay sounds like you and not like anyone else.

Analyzing Great Common App Essays That Worked
I've picked two essays from the examples collected above to examine in more depth so that you can see exactly what makes a successful college essay work. Full credit for these essays goes to the original authors and the schools that published them.
Example 1: "Breaking Into Cars," by Stephen, Johns Hopkins Class of '19 (Common App Essay, 636 words long)
I had never broken into a car before.
We were in Laredo, having just finished our first day at a Habitat for Humanity work site. The Hotchkiss volunteers had already left, off to enjoy some Texas BBQ, leaving me behind with the college kids to clean up. Not until we were stranded did we realize we were locked out of the van.
Someone picked a coat hanger out of the dumpster, handed it to me, and took a few steps back.
"Can you do that thing with a coat hanger to unlock it?"
"Why me?" I thought.
More out of amusement than optimism, I gave it a try. I slid the hanger into the window's seal like I'd seen on crime shows, and spent a few minutes jiggling the apparatus around the inside of the frame. Suddenly, two things simultaneously clicked. One was the lock on the door. (I actually succeeded in springing it.) The other was the realization that I'd been in this type of situation before. In fact, I'd been born into this type of situation.
My upbringing has numbed me to unpredictability and chaos. With a family of seven, my home was loud, messy, and spottily supervised. My siblings arguing, the dog barking, the phone ringingâall meant my house was functioning normally. My Dad, a retired Navy pilot, was away half the time. When he was home, he had a parenting style something like a drill sergeant. At the age of nine, I learned how to clear burning oil from the surface of water. My Dad considered this a critical life skillâyou know, in case my aircraft carrier should ever get torpedoed. "The water's on fire! Clear a hole!" he shouted, tossing me in the lake without warning. While I'm still unconvinced about that particular lesson's practicality, my Dad's overarching message is unequivocally true: much of life is unexpected, and you have to deal with the twists and turns.
Living in my family, days rarely unfolded as planned. A bit overlooked, a little pushed around, I learned to roll with reality, negotiate a quick deal, and give the improbable a try. I don't sweat the small stuff, and I definitely don't expect perfect fairness. So what if our dining room table only has six chairs for seven people? Someone learns the importance of punctuality every night.
But more than punctuality and a special affinity for musical chairs, my family life has taught me to thrive in situations over which I have no power. Growing up, I never controlled my older siblings, but I learned how to thwart their attempts to control me. I forged alliances, and realigned them as necessary. Sometimes, I was the poor, defenseless little brother; sometimes I was the omniscient elder. Different things to different people, as the situation demanded. I learned to adapt.
Back then, these techniques were merely reactions undertaken to ensure my survival. But one day this fall, Dr. Hicks, our Head of School, asked me a question that he hoped all seniors would reflect on throughout the year: "How can I participate in a thing I do not govern, in the company of people I did not choose?"
The question caught me off guard, much like the question posed to me in Laredo. Then, I realized I knew the answer. I knew why the coat hanger had been handed to me.
Growing up as the middle child in my family, I was a vital participant in a thing I did not govern, in the company of people I did not choose. It's family. It's society. And often, it's chaos. You participate by letting go of the small stuff, not expecting order and perfection, and facing the unexpected with confidence, optimism, and preparedness. My family experience taught me to face a serendipitous world with confidence.
What Makes This Essay Tick?
It's very helpful to take writing apart in order to see just how it accomplishes its objectives. Stephen's essay is very effective. Let's find out why!
An Opening Line That Draws You In
In just eight words, we get: scene-setting (he is standing next to a car about to break in), the idea of crossing a boundary (he is maybe about to do an illegal thing for the first time), and a cliffhanger (we are thinking: is he going to get caught? Is he headed for a life of crime? Is he about to be scared straight?).
Great, Detailed Opening Story
More out of amusement than optimism, I gave it a try. I slid the hanger into the window's seal like I'd seen on crime shows, and spent a few minutes jiggling the apparatus around the inside of the frame.
It's the details that really make this small experience come alive. Notice how whenever he can, Stephen uses a more specific, descriptive word in place of a more generic one. The volunteers aren't going to get food or dinner; they're going for "Texas BBQ." The coat hanger comes from "a dumpster." Stephen doesn't just move the coat hangerâhe "jiggles" it.
Details also help us visualize the emotions of the people in the scene. The person who hands Stephen the coat hanger isn't just uncomfortable or nervous; he "takes a few steps back"âa description of movement that conveys feelings. Finally, the detail of actual speech makes the scene pop. Instead of writing that the other guy asked him to unlock the van, Stephen has the guy actually say his own words in a way that sounds like a teenager talking.

Turning a Specific Incident Into a Deeper Insight
Suddenly, two things simultaneously clicked. One was the lock on the door. (I actually succeeded in springing it.) The other was the realization that I'd been in this type of situation before. In fact, I'd been born into this type of situation.
Stephen makes the locked car experience a meaningful illustration of how he has learned to be resourceful and ready for anything, and he also makes this turn from the specific to the broad through an elegant play on the two meanings of the word "click."
Using Concrete Examples When Making Abstract Claims

"Unpredictability and chaos" are very abstract, not easily visualized concepts. They could also mean any number of thingsâviolence, abandonment, poverty, mental instability. By instantly following up with highly finite and unambiguous illustrations like "family of seven" and "siblings arguing, the dog barking, the phone ringing," Stephen grounds the abstraction in something that is easy to picture: a large, noisy family.
Using Small Bits of Humor and Casual Word Choice

Obviously, knowing how to clean burning oil is not high on the list of things every 9-year-old needs to know. To emphasize this, Stephen uses sarcasm by bringing up a situation that is clearly over-the-top: "in case my aircraft carrier should ever get torpedoed."
The humor also feels relaxed. Part of this is because he introduces it with the colloquial phrase "you know," so it sounds like he is talking to us in person. This approach also diffuses the potential discomfort of the reader with his father's strictnessâsince he is making jokes about it, clearly he is OK. Notice, though, that this doesn't occur very much in the essay. This helps keep the tone meaningful and serious rather than flippant.

An Ending That Stretches the Insight Into the Future
But one day this fall, Dr. Hicks, our Head of School, asked me a question that he hoped all seniors would reflect on throughout the year: "How can I participate in a thing I do not govern, in the company of people I did not choose?"
The ending of the essay reveals that Stephen's life has been one long preparation for the future. He has emerged from chaos and his dad's approach to parenting as a person who can thrive in a world that he can't control.
This connection of past experience to current maturity and self-knowledge is a key element in all successful personal essays. Colleges are very much looking for mature, self-aware applicants. These are the qualities of successful college students, who will be able to navigate the independence college classes require and the responsibility and quasi-adulthood of college life.
What Could This Essay Do Even Better?
Even the best essays aren't perfect, and even the world's greatest writers will tell you that writing is never "finished"âjust "due." So what would we tweak in this essay if we could?
Replace some of the clichéd language. Stephen uses handy phrases like "twists and turns" and "don't sweat the small stuff" as a kind of shorthand for explaining his relationship to chaos and unpredictability. But using too many of these ready-made expressions runs the risk of clouding out your own voice and replacing it with something expected and boring.
Use another example from recent life. Stephen's first example (breaking into the van in Laredo) is a great illustration of being resourceful in an unexpected situation. But his essay also emphasizes that he "learned to adapt" by being "different things to different people." It would be great to see how this plays out outside his family, either in the situation in Laredo or another context.

Example 2: By Renner Kwittken, Tufts Class of '23 (Common App Essay, 645 words long)
My first dream job was to be a pickle truck driver. I saw it in my favorite book, Richard Scarry's "Cars and Trucks and Things That Go," and for some reason, I was absolutely obsessed with the idea of driving a giant pickle. Much to the discontent of my younger sister, I insisted that my parents read us that book as many nights as possible so we could find goldbug, a small little golden bug, on every page. I would imagine the wonderful life I would have: being a pig driving a giant pickle truck across the country, chasing and finding goldbug. I then moved on to wanting to be a Lego Master. Then an architect. Then a surgeon.
Then I discovered a real goldbug: gold nanoparticles that can reprogram macrophages to assist in killing tumors, produce clear images of them without sacrificing the subject, and heat them to obliteration.
Suddenly the destination of my pickle was clear.
I quickly became enveloped by the world of nanomedicine; I scoured articles about liposomes, polymeric micelles, dendrimers, targeting ligands, and self-assembling nanoparticles, all conquering cancer in some exotic way. Completely absorbed, I set out to find a mentor to dive even deeper into these topics. After several rejections, I was immensely grateful to receive an invitation to work alongside Dr. Sangeeta Ray at Johns Hopkins.
In the lab, Dr. Ray encouraged a great amount of autonomy to design and implement my own procedures. I chose to attack a problem that affects the entire field of nanomedicine: nanoparticles consistently fail to translate from animal studies into clinical trials. Jumping off recent literature, I set out to see if a pre-dose of a common chemotherapeutic could enhance nanoparticle delivery in aggressive prostate cancer, creating three novel constructs based on three different linear polymers, each using fluorescent dye (although no gold, sorry goldbug!). Though using radioactive isotopes like Gallium and Yttrium would have been incredible, as a 17-year-old, I unfortunately wasn't allowed in the same room as these radioactive materials (even though I took a Geiger counter to a pair of shoes and found them to be slightly dangerous).
I hadn't expected my hypothesis to work, as the research project would have ideally been led across two full years. Yet while there are still many optimizations and revisions to be done, I was thrilled to find -- with completely new nanoparticles that may one day mean future trials will use particles with the initials "RK-1" -- thatcyclophosphamide did indeed increase nanoparticle delivery to the tumor in a statistically significant way.
A secondary, unexpected research project was living alone in Baltimore, a new city to me, surrounded by people much older than I. Even with moving frequently between hotels, AirBnB's, and students' apartments, I strangely reveled in the freedom I had to enjoy my surroundings and form new friendships with graduate school students from the lab. We explored The Inner Harbor at night, attended a concert together one weekend, and even got to watch the Orioles lose (to nobody's surprise). Ironically, it's through these new friendships I discovered something unexpected: what I truly love is sharing research. Whether in a presentation or in a casual conversation, making others interested in science is perhaps more exciting to me than the research itself. This solidified a new pursuit to angle my love for writing towards illuminating science in ways people can understand, adding value to a society that can certainly benefit from more scientific literacy.
It seems fitting that my goals are still transforming: in Scarry's book, there is not just one goldbug, there is one on every page. With each new experience, I'm learning that it isn't the goldbug itself, but rather the act of searching for the goldbugs that will encourage, shape, and refine my ever-evolving passions. Regardless of the goldbug I seek -- I know my pickle truck has just begun its journey.
Renner takes a somewhat different approach than Stephen, but their essay is just as detailed and engaging. Let's go through some of the strengths of this essay.
One Clear Governing Metaphor
This essay is ultimately about two things: Rennerâs dreams and future career goals, and Rennerâs philosophy on goal-setting and achieving oneâs dreams.
But instead of listing off all the amazing things theyâve done to pursue their dream of working in nanomedicine, Renner tells a powerful, unique story instead. To set up the narrative, Renner opens the essay by connecting their experiences with goal-setting and dream-chasing all the way back to a memorable childhood experience:
This lightheartedâbut relevant!--story about the moment when Renner first developed a passion for a specific career (âfinding the goldbugâ) provides an anchor point for the rest of the essay. As Renner pivots to describing their current dreams and goalsâworking in nanomedicineâthe metaphor of âfinding the goldbugâ is reflected in Rennerâs experiments, rejections, and new discoveries.
Though Renner tells multiple stories about their quest to âfind the goldbug,â or, in other words, pursue their passion, each story is connected by a unifying theme; namely, that as we search and grow over time, our goals will transformâŠand thatâs okay! By the end of the essay, Renner uses the metaphor of âfinding the goldbugâ to reiterate the relevance of the opening story:
While the earlier parts of the essay convey Rennerâs core message by showing, the final, concluding paragraph sums up Rennerâs insights by telling. By briefly and clearly stating the relevance of the goldbug metaphor to their own philosophy on goals and dreams, Renner demonstrates their creativity, insight, and eagerness to grow and evolve as the journey continues into college.

An Engaging, Individual Voice
This essay uses many techniques that make Renner sound genuine and make the reader feel like we already know them.
Technique #1: humor. Notice Renner's gentle and relaxed humor that lightly mocks their younger self's grand ambitions (this is different from the more sarcastic kind of humor used by Stephen in the first essayâyou could never mistake one writer for the other).

Renner gives a great example of how to use humor to your advantage in college essays. You donât want to come off as too self-deprecating or sarcastic, but telling a lightheartedly humorous story about your younger self that also showcases how youâve grown and changed over time can set the right tone for your entire essay.
Technique #2: intentional, eye-catching structure. The second technique is the way Renner uses a unique structure to bolster the tone and themes of their essay . The structure of your essay can have a major impact on how your ideas come acrossâŠso itâs important to give it just as much thought as the content of your essay!
For instance, Renner does a great job of using one-line paragraphs to create dramatic emphasis and to make clear transitions from one phase of the story to the next:
Suddenly the destination of my pickle car was clear.
Not only does the one-liner above signal that Renner is moving into a new phase of the narrative (their nanoparticle research experiences), it also tells the reader that this is a big moment in Rennerâs story. Itâs clear that Renner made a major discovery that changed the course of their goal pursuit and dream-chasing. Through structure, Renner conveys excitement and entices the reader to keep pushing forward to the next part of the story.
Technique #3: playing with syntax. The third technique is to use sentences of varying length, syntax, and structure. Most of the essay's written in standard English and uses grammatically correct sentences. However, at key moments, Renner emphasizes that the reader needs to sit up and pay attention by switching to short, colloquial, differently punctuated, and sometimes fragmented sentences.

In the examples above, Renner switches adeptly between long, flowing sentences and quippy, telegraphic ones. At the same time, Renner uses these different sentence lengths intentionally. As they describe their experiences in new places, they use longer sentences to immerse the reader in the sights, smells, and sounds of those experiences. And when itâs time to get a big, key idea across, Renner switches to a short, punchy sentence to stop the reader in their tracks.
The varying syntax and sentence lengths pull the reader into the narrative and set up crucial âahaâ moments when itâs most importantâŠwhich is a surefire way to make any college essay stand out.

Renner's essay is very strong, but there are still a few little things that could be improved.
Connecting the research experiences to the theme of âfinding the goldbug.â The essay begins and ends with Rennerâs connection to the idea of âfinding the goldbug.â And while this metaphor is deftly tied into the essayâs intro and conclusion, it isnât entirely clear what Rennerâs big findings were during the research experiences that are described in the middle of the essay. It would be great to add a sentence or two stating what Rennerâs big takeaways (or âgoldbugsâ) were from these experiences, which add more cohesion to the essay as a whole.
Give more details about discovering the world of nanomedicine. It makes sense that Renner wants to get into the details of their big research experiences as quickly as possible. After all, these are the details that show Rennerâs dedication to nanomedicine! But a smoother transition from the opening pickle car/goldbug story to Rennerâs âreal goldbugâ of nanoparticles would help the reader understand why nanoparticles became Rennerâs goldbug. Finding out why Renner is so motivated to study nanomedicineâand perhaps what put them on to this field of studyâwould help readers fully understand why Renner chose this path in the first place.

#2: Read Other Essays to Get Ideas for Your Own
As you go through the essays we've compiled for you above, ask yourself the following questions:
- Can you explain to yourself (or someone else!) why the opening sentence works well?
- Look for the essay's detailed personal anecdote. What senses is the author describing? Can you easily picture the scene in your mind's eye?
- Find the place where this anecdote bridges into a larger insight about the author. How does the essay connect the two? How does the anecdote work as an example of the author's characteristic, trait, or skill?
- Check out the essay's tone. If it's funny, can you find the places where the humor comes from? If it's sad and moving, can you find the imagery and description of feelings that make you moved? If it's serious, can you see how word choice adds to this tone?
Make a note whenever you find an essay or part of an essay that you think was particularly well-written, and think about what you like about it . Is it funny? Does it help you really get to know the writer? Does it show what makes the writer unique? Once you have your list, keep it next to you while writing your essay to remind yourself to try and use those same techniques in your own essay.

#3: Find Your "A-Ha!" Moment
All of these essays rely on connecting with the reader through a heartfelt, highly descriptive scene from the author's life. It can either be very dramatic (did you survive a plane crash?) or it can be completely mundane (did you finally beat your dad at Scrabble?). Either way, it should be personal and revealing about you, your personality, and the way you are now that you are entering the adult world.

#4: Start Early, Revise Often
Let me level with you: the best writing isn't writing at all. It's rewriting. And in order to have time to rewrite, you have to start way before the application deadline. My advice is to write your first draft at least two months before your applications are due.
Let it sit for a few days untouched. Then come back to it with fresh eyes and think critically about what you've written. What's extra? What's missing? What is in the wrong place? What doesn't make sense? Don't be afraid to take it apart and rearrange sections. Do this several times over, and your essay will be much better for it!

The School Building
Our school building is very big and it has seven floors. Our school has classes from pre-nursery to class twelve. It also has a big playground and has a swimming pool too, which gives us a nice view of the building.
Our school runs in two shifts morning and day. Morning shifts are for classes pre-nursery to class three whereas the day shifts start from class four to class twelve. All of the classes have three sections.
Our Principal and the teacher both have two separate rooms. Also, there is another room for clerks where the records of all the students and teachers are kept.
There is a big library on the third floor where we have well-stocked useful books and we have also well-equipped laboratory rooms. We too have a common room where we play indoor games during .recreation hours. Our common room is also the venue of our debating club. The Principal as the president of the debating club. We have our debate on every Saturday after school hours in the common room of the school building. We have the debate, read out essays and have a discussion on interesting topics. Some of the students are good in games and have also won prizes in many competitive matches.
There is a monthly magazine published in our school. Also, every year we go for an excursion with some teachers as our guides.
The school annual function and the prize-giving ceremony holds every year. The Saraswati Puja, Independence day, Republic Day is also celebrated every year with great enthusiasm.

The Teacher-student Relationship
The Principal and teachers of our school take personal care of the individual students as a philosopher and guide. As a result, itâs a make bond between the two and its easy to communicate between them.

The Shenandoah County School Boardâs Terrible History Lesson

O n May 10, 2024, 161 years to the day after General Thomas âStonewallâ Jacksonâs last breath fighting for the Confederate insurrection intended to continue enslavement of human beings in America, the Shenandoah County School Board voted 5-1 to restore his name on a high school in rural Virginia.
More than 50 concerned community members, students, and parents, including one of the first African Americans to integrate Stonewall Jackson High School in 1963, and hundreds of their supporters, continued to advocate a new reckoning of the countyâs heritage of enslavement, segregation, and racial injustice. They affirmed the names a community committee selected in 2021 renaming the school as Mountain View High and another school named after Confederate generals Turner Ashby and Robert E. Lee as Honey Run Elementary.
But the school board heard none of it. Instead, the board sided with those idolizing the faith and loyalty of âheroesâ like Jackson, condemning pandemic-related processes that did not take into account the voices of âwe the people,â and complaining about âwoke outsiders.â At the end of the board meeting, the board had delivered a disgraceful new chapter in our communityâs history and a terrible lesson for the children they are sworn to educate.
Historians will debate the consequences of the boardâs vote and perhaps whether the nationâs current political mood has rekindled racial tensions. But the school board members and their embittered supporters made it clear that the shadows of our segregated past still loom large.
For context, we should look at 2020, particularly the 8 minutes and 46 seconds of video that emblazoned the truth of racial injustice in America. After George Floydâs murder by police in May of that year, national, state, and local leaders across the nation took up resolutions against racism, including Shenandoah Countyâs Board of Supervisors and the county School Board.
At around the same time in our mountain-cradled county, another incident reminded us of Americaâs lingering racial unrest: an encounter between a white mob and a black pastor in Edinburg, Va. On June 1, 2020, Pastor McCray approached a couple illegally dumping a refrigerator on his property, asking them to leave. They left, returned with three more people and began âattacking him physically, saying âthey donât give a darnâ about âmy black life and the Black Lives Matter stuff,â and telling him they would âkillâ him,â according to Associated Press reports. McCray put distance between himself and the mob by brandishing a gun that he was legally licensed to carry. When the police arrived, they arrested the Black man with the gun.
The Shenandoah County Sheriff later apologized for the incident, but it reinforces the need for formal resolutions against racism and leaders willing to make difficult decisions for a more inclusive community. The Shenandoah County School Board at the time agreed. They chose action, encouraged by then-Department of Education secretary Atif Qarni and then-Governor Ralph Northam, both of whom supported statewide removal of Confederate leadersâ names of public schools.
The 2020 school board, tying in as the next step to its June âResolution condemning racism and affirming the divisionâs commitment to an inclusive school environment for all,â retired the names of Confederate leaders, and developed a process for community and student input into choosing more unifying public school names. On September 10, 2020, the then school board reaffirmed the foregoing motion, as well as moving forward with renaming the schools on southern campus. Community committees met during the next three months, with new names chosen at the January 14, 2021 meeting, after seven months of public input.
By 2024, recently elected school board members focused their arguments for restoration on the former boardâs âsecretâ process during the COVID âplan-demic,â stating that community input was not taken into account at the time. Two years before, three current school board members ran on a campaign to restore the schoolâs Confederate leader names, an attempt that ended at the June 9, 2022 school board meeting with a 3-3 stalemate. The current board consists of three more new school board members, elected in the fall of 2023. Like many school boards around the nation, ours has committed to reversing civil rights often under the lost-cause banner of Confederate pride.
The memory of Stonewall Jackson High School as a whites-only public institution until its integration in 1963 is not a distant echo of history but an agonizing experience for many Black residents of Shenandoah County. These individuals are not just statistics in history books; they are our neighbors, friends, and familyâand they were intentionally harmed in Shenandoah County as the Civil Rights movement gained momentum in the 1950s.

And now again in 2024. Dozens of citizens, alum, parents, and current students of the schools addressed the board, offering poignant testimony about lived experiences with institutionalized discrimination or in support of others who had. Approximately two-thirds of the speakers opposed back-naming the schools. For them, returning to Confederate leader names makes the damage linger.
Aliyah Ogle, a student who represented her school in three sports this year and would be attending the renamed high school next year, said it best: âI'm a black student and if the name is restored, I would have to represent a man that fought for my ancestors to be slaves. That makes me feel like I'm disrespecting my ancestors and going against what my family and I believe, which is that we should all be treated equally, and that slavery was a cruel and awful thing.â
Most of the board members could not have cared less about the countyâs 252 year history. They were more concerned for judging the 2020 school boardâs actions and recognizing the Confederate heritage of the county. Their brand of leadership consisted of telling the people they represent that we all have problems of one kind or another; itâs time to move on. âWar is hell,â said Dennis Barlow, chairman of the Shenandoah County School Board. They were joined by two dozen pro-Confederacy speakers, claiming there is no evident racism in Shenandoah County, and never has been.
Board member Tom Streett used his decision to discuss pro-slavery General Jackson. âWhen you read about this man â who he was, what he stood for, his character, his loyalty, his leadership, how Godly a man he was â those standards that he had were much higher than any leadership of the school system in 2020,â Streett said.
Streett, however, neglected to mention that even Jacksonâs descendants have weighed in on this legacy issue. For the past seven years, the generalâs great-great grandsons, William Jackson Christian and Warren Edmund Christian, have said they support removing Confederate statues and other monumentsâincluding in Shenandoah County this weekâas âpart of a larger project of actively mending the racial disparities that hundreds of years of white supremacy have wrought.â They added that they were âashamed to benefit from white supremacy while our black family and friends suffer.â
Yet Shenandoah Countyâs school board and its grievance agenda does nothing to provide historical context, advance dialogue, or heal the feelings of well-meaning citizens. Using the same policy the 2021 school board used to name Mountain View and Honey Run, the 2024 board defiantly focused on undoing the decision and giving voice to the people they wanted to hear. The decision unfairly places our children as pawns on a rhetorical battlefield, keeping the boardâs focus on vengeance and political controlânot due process or heritage. But itâs more dangerous than just talk and hard feelings: The county remains on the radar of the Southern Poverty Law Center , which tracks white supremacists, including ongoing activity by the Patriot Front. To address this reality, we need better, sensible leadership from our school board. But for now, we must live with a stark reminder that elections have consequences.
Looking ahead, the many good people of our county will strive to ensure that our complete history, good and bad, remains available to students and the public. We must find a way to truly honor our whole heritage without insisting that students salute pro-slavery traitors or the treatment of their ancestors as subhuman property for almost 400 years.
If the U.S. Department of Defense can rename military bases once emblazoned with Confederate leadersâ names, then our public schools can do the same. After all, these are the spaces where the first lessons of civic duties are learned. History is complicated, no doubt, but thereâs no better place to examine complex issues than in a good school. Other nations and communities reckon with difficult pasts. In Germany, for example, students still learn about Adolf Hitler, but they are not forced to wear sports jerseys and school-pride t-shirts that glorify symbols or names associated with murderous war crimes.
Our fight for whatâs right in Shenandoah County is not over. We will continue to oppose historical injustices and help all constituencies in our community learn from the lessons of our past. As it has throughout our nationâs history, the work of decent people striving for a better, more united America will go on. We hope the school board here can find a way to join us along the way.

Does School Choice âWorkâ?

In âStraight Talk with Rick and Jal,â Harvard Universityâs Jal Mehta and I examine the reforms and enthusiasms that permeate education. In a field full of buzzwords, our goal is simple: Tell the truth, in plain English, about whatâs being proposed and what it means for students, teachers, and parents. We may be wrong and we will frequently disagree, but weâll try to be candid and ensure that you donât need a Ph.D. in eduspeak to understand us.
Todayâs topic is educational choice and whether it âworks.â
Rick: Itâs been another busy spring for educational choice, so letâs dig into the heated debate about whether choice âworks.â Hereâs where Iâm coming from: Iâve supported full-spectrum educational choice since the last century, including intradistrict choice, charter schooling, school vouchers, education savings accounts (ESA), and the rest. That said, regular readers also know that Iâm critical of the absolutist rhetoric favored by some choice advocates, over-the-top claims for choice, and the insistence that choice works. As I see it, educational choice is part of the answer to our challenges, but it isnât the answer. Choice enables more parents to find options that are right for their child, creates more room for the emergence of promising new options, and offers educators more say as to where theyâll work. These are all very good things.
But educational choice programs are no one thing. They vary dramatically, from relatively restricted open-enrollment programs that give students some choice among district schools to ambitious ESA programs that radically reimagine how schooling works. Just within charter schooling, there are vast differences from state to state in who is permitted to authorize schools, how they are authorized, the goals they are required to meet, and so forth. Broadly asserting that choice is âgoodâ (or âbadâ) ignores that it means many different things depending on context, policy, and practice.
In short, choice isnât a bag of magic beans. Worse, suggesting it is makes it less likely that anyone will do the hard work necessary to make choice programs deliver. Ultimately, the how of choice matters mightily. How tough is it for good new schools or programs to emerge? How do we ensure that scam artists arenât ripping off families and taxpayers? How do parents find out what the options are? How does the financing work? The answers to questions like these determine whether a school choice program works for the families that participate or not.
Anyway, thatâs how I tend to approach all this. Curious to hear your take, especially given how much youâve thought about these issues in the context of your scholarship on institutions and deeper learning.
Jal: Yet again, there is a surprising amount of agreement here. Choice can mean very different things depending on the context and the nature of the regulations. In some states, even fairly proven providers canât open new schools, whereas in others, licenses are offered to schools that have no track record or plan. As Iâve talked with graduate students coming from all over the nation, their views of choice often vary significantly depending on what state they are coming from.
From an innovation perspective, I think the hopes of the choice movement have not been realized. Charter schools, in particular, were created based on the idea that they would use the freedoms they had been granted to try out new possibilities, which might, over time, influence traditional public schools. But in practice, most charter schools, including a number of the most well-known ones, have mostly just done the same old thingâthe same seven-period days, same subjects, same teaching methods. Even Nina Rees, the former head of the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools, acknowledges that charter schools frequently havenât been as innovative as their advocates have hoped. The reasons for this are almost overdetermined: Teachers teach as they were taught, parents expect school to look the same as what they experienced, external measures like state tests and college admissions reward conformity, etc.
If we wanted to take advantage of some of the benefits of choice to generate more genuine innovation, we would need to make some changes. For instance, we would have to alter the external ecosystem: If we want schools to be organized around students doing more authentic work, then schools have to be evaluated on the basis of students doing that kind of authentic work. These evaluations might include performance assessments or balanced scorecard-style dashboards. Or it might look like the state getting out of the business of measuring outcomes entirely and trusting that parents will be able to select the schools that work for their kids, without having one set of measures that standardizes everything. (Ted Sizer advocated market over state accountability for this reason in The Red Pencil .) A more split-the-middle option would be to have the state perform periodic accreditation reviews, such as those that are used in England. This would allow schools to experiment as they like but offer some protections that public institutions are meeting a certain floor of public goals.
What do you think, Rick? Has choice produced âinnovationâ? How do we create quality without standardization?
Rick: You know, itâs almost disturbing how much common ground we find in these exchanges, even surrounded by frenzied hyperbole (with Kentuckyâs lieutenant governor recently thundering that ââschool choiceâ is nothing more than welfare for the well-to-doâ). Iâm always struck how crazy it is that weâve ceded so much ground to the self-interested industry of outrage-peddling politicos and culture-war grifters.
But thatâs a sermon Iâve preached many times, so Iâll get back to the point. I agree with you both that choice works largely by creating room for better solutions to emerge . . . and that it mostly hasnât. As you note, this is due to the failure (of even its supporters) to embrace the kind of ecosystem that fuels rethinking. For me, itâs useful to think of this as a humane, organic vision of school improvement. Now, talk of choice as âhumaneâ and âorganicâ can sound odd when the debate is filled with talk of âwars on public educationâ and âfailing public schools.â But all this wild-eyed rhetoric misses the mark. The promise of choice is not that, tomorrow, schools will magically be âbetter.â The promise of choice-based systems is that, over time, they create room for educators and families to build better solutions.
This should all be intuitive to anyone whoâs spent much time talking school improvement with principals or district leaders. Conversations are peppered with phrases like, âIâd like to do this, but the contract requires . . . ,â âIâd like to pay them more, but HR says . . . ,â or âIâd love to move those dollars, but weâre not allowed. . . .â Educators wrestle with layers of rules, regulations, and contract provisions. Thatâs why choice can be so appealing: It can make it easier for educators to pioneer promising new school models. School vouchers and ESAs make it feasible to offer alternatives to low-income families whoâve long felt trapped in local schools. Charter schooling enables educators to get a new school approved by a charter authorizer without having to spend years pleading with district officials for flexibility, facilities, and approval.
This kind of inertia is hardly unique to education. Older organizations are rarely good at managing change. They tend to grow rigid, routinized, and hierarchical with time, making it tougher to leverage new technologies or meet changing needs. Thatâs why the average life span of a Fortune 500 company is just 50 years. When we tell educators theyâve no path other than âfixingâ aged systems or schools, we put them in a nearly impossible position.
Thatâs one reason Iâm optimistic about choice today, in the wake of the pandemic. As I noted in The Great School Rethink , the emergence of microschools, learning pods, and hybrid home schools; the adoption of large-scale ESA programs; and the explosion of home schooling have together changed the choice landscape. Choice is no longer mostly about a handful of broadly similar urban charter school networks; today, itâs far more decentralized, dynamic, and geographically dispersed. Of course, these new changes have also surfaced new challenges, ranging from accountability for public funds to questions of staffing and logistics. Our ability to thoughtfully navigate these will determine the success of this next era of educational choice.

Jal: Embracing a âhumane and organicâ approach to school reform? If you donât watch out, youâre going to get kicked out of the GOP, Rick.
I agree with your idea that the emerging choice landscapeâparticularly the growth of home schooling, learning pods, and microschoolsâis much more varied in its goals, means, and approaches than the charter schools that dominated the dialogue in the aughts and 2010s. There also seems to be a much more fundamental willingness to rethink what is taken for granted. This can range from parents who want to resist the standardizing pressures of schools to those whose kids arenât being served well by the peer or racial dynamics of such schools.
There isnât yet much research about these efforts, so what I know about them is pretty partial. But still, there is a sense that these folks are motivated by a much more human focus than past reformers. Rather than being committed to grand ideals like social mobility for other peopleâs children, these are people who are looking at their own kids not as abstractions but as real human beings who are not being served well by school. We can hope that what they generate is much more varied and authentic and that it serves the wide diversity of interests that young people bring to the table.
At the same time, the idea of unschooling and escaping the conformity of public education is not a new one, nor is it a surefire way to educate children successfully. Experience suggests that there are certain Romantic ideas that will turn out to be not entirely true. While intrinsic motivation and self-directed learning are important (and in much too short supply in regular public schools), for most kids, they wonât be sufficient without some structure, community, and routine. Some kids listen better to other adults than they do to their own parents. Thus, there is a lot to be figured out in this emerging world: Who should âteachâ; what sorts of structures, communities, and routines should replace the ones previously provided by school; and what models work and for which kids.
To make this a bit more personal, we were home schoolers for most of one year during the COVID-19 pandemic. We had a bright 6-year-old who was bored by virtual school and would click âleave meetingâ rather than partake in the community-building activities his school had designed for 1st graders. We enrolled him and his best friend in a little school in our living room. We used some materials for science and social studies that my wife found on a home-schooling site and signed up for Beast Academy , a virtual math program for bright kids who like math. Beast Academy was a hit and lasted well past the pandemic. The home-schooling materials we got were more mixed: Some landed and some didnât. For ELA, we had him read (what he wanted) and write (what he wanted). This was good, but only worked because his kindergarten teacher had already taught him to read. Eventually, the friend had to go back to school, and our son got sad and lonely without him, and so he went back to school. The lesson here is that what we call âschoolâ is really a bundle of thingsâcurriculum in different subjects, teachers, friends, specialsâall of which have to be replaced in ways that work. This is much easier said than done.
One obvious question is what the role of the state is in this process. When we home schooled, we just had to fill out a form with the district at the beginning of the year saying what we were going to do and then one at the end saying what we had done. This seems a little light to me. I think some kind of performance of understanding in different domains is important to ensure that real learning has taken place. But the trick, as is always the case with any alternative arrangement, is that if we put too tight strictures on what counts, we are going to lose the innovation that choice can potentially unleash. Finding a way to manage this balance is the key to making the new choice movement more innovative than the old.

On May 17, 1954, the Supreme Court laid out a new precedent: Separate but equal has no place in American schools.
The message of Brown v. Board of Education was clear. But 70 years later, the impact of the decision is still up for debate. Have Americans truly ended segregation in fact, not just in law?
The answer is complicated. U.S. schools in recent decades have grown far more diverse and, by some measures, more segregated , according to an Associated Press analysis.
On one hand, the number of Black and white students who go to school almost exclusively with students of the same race is at an all-time low.
On the other hand, huge shares of students of color still go to schools with almost no white students. Hispanic segregation is worse now than in the 1960s. The nationâs largest school districts, in particular, have seen a surge in segregation since the 1990s, according to research from Stanford Universityâs Educational Opportunity Project.
The history of school desegregation efforts, from Brown v. Board to today, shows how far the U.S. has come â and how far it has to go.
1954-1964: THE SOUTH DRAGS ITS FEET
The Brown v. Board decision declared white and Black students could not be forced to attend separate schools, even if those schools were allegedly equal in quality.
A few states such as Kansas and Delaware made some effort to comply with the order. But leaders in the Deep South immediately declared what U.S. Sen. Harry Byrd of Virginia called â massive resistance âł to integration.
In all, segregation levels changed little over the next decade, despite the bravery of Black students like the Little Rock Nine in 1957 and 6-year-old Ruby Bridges in New Orleans in 1960, who faced violent, racist mobs when they tried to desegregate their local schools.

1964-1986: DESEGREGATION GETS SERIOUS
By the mid-1960s, the federal courts lost patience with the South. They started to mete out desegregation orders with teeth, requiring busing if necessary. Supreme Court Justice William J. Brennan Jr. declared segregation must be ripped out âroot and branch.â
At the same time, civil rights legislation of the 1960s reshaped schools in far-reaching ways. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 banned discrimination in education; the Voting Rights Act gave Black voters more power to choose school boards; and the Elementary and Secondary Education Act offered schools federal cash if they desegregated. Meanwhile, the Immigration and Nationality Act opened the country to more immigrants from Asia, Africa and Latin America, leading to far more diverse schools.

From there, segregation decreased quickly. Almost every Black student in the South went to school only with people of color in 1963; only one-fourth of Black students did in 1968.
But desegregation came with a price: Thousands of qualified Black teachers were laid off, even though they were often more credentialed and qualified than white teachers.
âIntegration has never been equitable,â said Ivory Toldson, a professor at Howard University.
Courts also began pushing desegregation in other parts of the country. Denver was one of the first cities outside the South called out for segregation in a 1973 Supreme Court case. Places like San Francisco and Cleveland were subject to desegregation orders, and riots broke out in 1974 over busing orders in Boston.
The momentum was short-lived. In 1974, the Supreme Court in Milliken v. Bradley struck down a desegregation plan that involved multiple school districts in and around Detroit. That meant metropolitan areas, with rare exceptions, could not be forced to bus students across school district lines.

The era saw massive white flight from urban school districts, in places where busing was required and where it was not. Los Angeles, Chicago and New York City collectively lost over half a million white public school students from 1968 to 1980. In just twelve years, the number of white students fell 71% in New Orleans, 78% in Detroit and 86% in Atlanta.
Still, federal court orders had succeeded in reducing Black segregation to its lowest level ever by 1986.

1986-TODAY: DIVERSITY GROWS, DESEGREGATION LOSES STEAM
The courts gradually began to focus less on achieving racially balanced schools and more on other ways to promote desegregation, such as magnet schools. It became easier for school districts to argue they had made enough progress to be released from desegregation orders, and most of them were lifted by the early 2000s. A few hundred are still active today, but usually unenforced; school district leaders often donât know theyâre still under desegregation orders.

The segregation of Black students changed little after the 1980s. As Latino immigration soared, so did the segregation of Latino students.
The effects of isolation are particularly pernicious for students who come from an immigrant background, said Patricia GĂĄndara, co-director of UCLAâs Civil Rights Project. These families are less likely to speak English or know the unspoken rules of the American education system, like how to apply for college.

More court cases chipped away at policy tools to address desegregation, turning toward the conservative idea that setting targets by race is itself a form of racial discrimination.
Nevertheless, classrooms became more diverse, reflecting the countryâs changing demographics. A historic milestone came in 2014, when for the first time the majority of U.S. students were children of color.
Students of color may be more exposed to each other, but theyâre still often in separate schools from white students. Around 4 out of 10 Black and Hispanic students go to schools made up almost entirely of other students of color.
Racial imbalance is particularly acute in the nationâs 100 largest districts, according to researchers from Stanfordâs Educational Opportunity Project. Using segregation scores of 0 to 100, they found Black-white segregation grew over 40% from 1991 to 2019, from 21 to 30 points, while Hispanic-white segregation grew from 15 to 24.

Thatâs both because the government moved away from desegregation orders in the 1990s and because parents took advantage of the school choice movement in the 2000s.
Even before school choice, racial isolation was extreme in many large urban school districts. This is one of the reasons that many states with large cities outside the South, such as Illinois, Michigan, New York and California, have been among the most segregated in America since at least the 1980s.
This segregation matters, because concentration in high-poverty, racially segregated schools is strongly correlated with poorer outcomes for students.
âSegregation is at the core of an awful lot of the problems that we have,â GĂĄndara said. âNo matter how much money you throw at it, if youâre going to cluster poor kids and kids without family resources to support them in school, youâre going to continue to have these uneven outcomes.â

30 years ago, The Critic enrolled six year olds everywhere in film school
Al jean and mike reissâ dark comedy about the worldâs saddest profession was a big hit on the playground.

Three decades agoâon January 26, 1994, to be preciseâtwo glorious words graced the ears of 26 million ABC viewers for the first time: âIt stinks.â Cartoon film critic Jay Sherman (voiced by Jon Lovitz) had a massive audience but would be gone a year and a half later. The brainchild of early Springfield residents James L. Brooks, Al Jean, and Mike Reiss, The Critic may have had a short life, but its legacy lives on. Personally, I canât untangle myself from Jay Sherman. But as lovely as it has been to be compared to a guy who takes literal orders from his stomach and whose ex-wife regards him with the warmth of a guard at Abu Ghraib, I canât deny the showâs impact on my life. It was my first exposure to a broader film culture.

The Critic has been with me my entire adult life and most of my childhood; the jokes from its 23-episode original run are never far from lips. I remain one of the few, the proud, still using the word âDuke-a-licious,â a situation that can only be described as a âDuke-tastrophe.â When I sat down to rewatch the show this year, I faced another Duke-tastrophe: I am now the same age as Jay Sherman, work in his field, and share similar opinions about the sequels and reboots that get made over actual movies. It stinks. It all stinks.
I was already obsessed with movies and TV when The Critic came to town. Nursing between six and 11 Coca-Colas a day, Iâd bounce on my couch in a caffeine-induced bender and pray aloud to the gods of HBO to play Batman , Beetlejuice , or Pee-Weeâs Big Adventure next. Stuck in my Tim Burton cul-de-sac, Iâd suffer through the afternoon until The Simpsons began its nightly rerun marathon. When ads for The Critic , a new show âfrom the creators of The Simpsons â about a guy who âhates everything he sees,â began airing during Home Improvement , who was I to resist?
My parents didnât have time to worry about my viewing habits. My mom was diagnosed with M.S. shortly after I was born, and my dad owned a small business when he wasnât cooking for, picking up after, and driving around my sister and me. There was no time to monitor, but my dad would facilitate my TV addiction. It was the only way to shut me up. When South Park premiered in 1997, he taped it for me because it aired after bedtime. When Bigger, Longer & Uncut came out two years later, he defied the box-office attendantâs warning that the movie wasnât appropriate for 11-year-olds with a resigned âI knowâ and escorted me into the theater. Decades later, he told me he figured Iâd be fine. How wrong he was.
Rising from the ashes of a Today Show parody and a failed Krusty The Clown spinoff set in New York , The Critic follows the tragic tale of Dr. Jay Sherman, PhD, a Pulitzer Prize-winning adopted son of a billionaire, who rakes in a six-figure salary saying Jurassic Park II âstinksâ on his nationally syndicated film review show, Coming Attractions . Despite the appearance of a charmed life, Jay is often the focus of New Yorkâs ire. Every episode opens with him receiving bad news, a bird stealing his toupee, and him cracking the ice at Rockefeller Center. But Jay isnât as cynical as his catchphrase makes him appear. Heâs a vigorous defender of the arts who, in the name of good movies, refuses to cow to the demands of his Ted Turner-inspired boss, Duke Philips (voiced by a brilliant Charles Napier). Jay spent his career criticizing Hollywood hacks, instilling in viewers that, maybe, not every movie was good. The message stuck.
Art always seemed under attack on The Critic , in absurd and relevant ways. His father smashed Guernica for fun, and his boss, a proto-Jack Donaghy, digitally created ad space in One Flew Over The Cuckooâs Nest . In the world of Critic creators Jean and Reiss, even arthouse fairy tales like The Red Balloon can become The Red Balloon 2: Revenge Of The Red Balloon . The unsubtle parody âClint Eastwood is Dirty Harry in Robo Canine Cop And A Half 2 " made sure I wouldnât look at my precious RoboCop 2 the same.
While most of the references went over my head, one doesnât need to know the specific works to find â Take that, Guernica ! â funny . The Critic always excelled at jokes over plot, playing to its grade-school audience that hadnât seen Goodfellas or The Piano . Thankfully, the spoofs were never too sophisticated, often simple black-out sketches the size of a Mad Magazine panel with targets only a half-step removed from the real thing. Nightmare Before Christmas became Nightmare Before Hanukkah , in a sequence that probably took way more time than it was worth. Meanwhile, a Goodfellas parody can be a setup for another of Jayâs memorable catchphrases, âHi, guy.â The under-10 crowd might not get the Picasso jokes, but Jayâs ridiculously basic catchphrases, like âbuy my bookâ and âhotchie motchie,â gave us plenty to chew on as the deeper references wormed into our subconscious.
Like all good criticism, The Critic expanded my view of the wider cinematic world. More than parodies of memorable moments, the show introduced me to Orson Welles, whose blocky frame, âcountry goodness and green pea-nessâ became a fixture of my pop culture understanding. The Critic didnât always treat him kindly, often reverting to fat jokes, but voice actor Maurice LaMarcheâs impression is still what I hear in my head when I think of Wellesâ dulcet tones.
The Critic often had a complex relationship with creators. Jayâs pitch for his second Pulitzer, an essay entitled âChaplin, Polanski, And Woody: Three Men And A Little Lady,â teases a more complex, systematic situation. Nevertheless, the showâs opening credits and Han Zimmerâs theme are a direct homage to Woody Allenâs Manhattan and its use of the New York skyline and George Gershwinâs âRhapsody In Blue.â
Of course, the show made critics worthy of celebrity, too. At that point, the extent of my interest in film criticism was the 1993 book Movies On TV And Video Cassette and the Blockbuster Video guide. But the series aired at the height of Siskel and Ebertâs television fame , so in the criticsâ section of Lâane Riche, the exclusive restaurant Jay frequents, Gene Shalit raves about linguine, Pauline Kael gets a name check, and Rex Reed is calling Ebert for a job. The show wasnât a critical darling, but despite getting panned by Siskel and Ebert on At The Movies , the pair appeared in the second-season classic, âSiskel & Ebert & Jay & Alice.â Itâs still the showâs most famous episode.
After its 1995 cancelation, the series existed as a dream only accessed through the Simpsons crossover episode â A Star Is Burns .â The crossover might be controversial for Matt Groening , but itâs a fan favorite responsible for some of the showâs most beloved jokes, like âSaying the quiet part loud,â âThatâs the joke,â and âBoo-urns.â Quoting those lines was my only connection to the Shermometer until Comedy Central added the show to its late-night offerings in 1997. Couched between other comedies far too adult for my delicate disposition, like Dr. Katz and the USA âUp All Nightâ classic Duckman , The Critic played the sleepover circuit. My friends and I would stay up well past midnight to glimpse â Ghostchasers III ,â cackling our heads off at a skyscraper-sized Ed Koch, asking, âHowâm I doing?â Who cares if I didnât know who Ed Koch was? I didnât know who Michael Dukakis was, either.
The Critic offered a primer for the film and cultural canon. It gave me junk food parodies of The Lion King and Indiana Jones and prepared my brain for a more expansive pop-culture universe populated by a flirty Elephant Man and a ghostly Orson Welles. But more than that, it instilled in me a belief that good movies were worth defending and that movies, in general, were an interest one could have. The people who make movies and the people who talk about them are all part of the same absurd, hostile, and fascinating world, a world I wanted to join.
Over the years, my love for The Critic receded into the background. But whenever I see another Jurassic Park sequel, a voice from the deep recesses of my memory cries out: âIt stinks.â

Decision Due Soon On Where To Build A New Elementary School In Lahaina
The Hawaii Department of Education hopes to choose a permanent campus for King Kamehameha III Elementary by next month.
Nine months after the Lahaina fire destroyed King Kamehameha III Elementary, the search is on to find a permanent new site for the school.
On Tuesday night, the Hawaii Department of Education presented three options: the elementary school’s original location on Front Street, Puukolii Village Mauka in Kaanapali and the temporary school’s current location at the Pulelehua Project, a housing development located near the Kapalua Airport.

The department recommended building a new elementary school at the Pulelehua Project, where students have been attending since April. DOE can use the temporary campus until 2029, when the school’s 30 modular classrooms must be taken down and the grounds must be restored to their original state.
Complex Area Superintendent Rebecca Winkie said the department would like to move to a permanent site within the next three to five years. Of the three proposed sites, only the Pulelehua Project would accommodate this timeline, Winkie said.
DOE has previously estimated that the temporary campus will cost from $100 million to $120 million if students remain there for a total of five years.
The department has a pre-existing agreement with Pulelehua’s developer to build a school on the property, making it easier to expedite the construction, Winkie said. Currently, no infrastructure for a school exists at the Puukolii Village Mauka housing project or in the burn zone on Front Street, she added.
Some meeting attendees raised concerns that the community would be shortchanged a school by rebuilding King Kamehameha III Elementary at the Pulelehua Project. The school initially intended for the project was meant to supplement existing campuses in Lahaina as the housing development brought more families to West Maui.
âWe should be here talking about two elementary schools,â said Justin Hughey, a former teacher at King Kamehameha III Elementary.
But the future of Lahainaâs student population remains unclear. In November, the department estimated that 1,000 fewer students were enrolled at Lahaina’s four public schools compared to the start of the year. King Kamehameha III Elementary currently serves about 350 students, compared to the 624 children it enrolled before the fires.
Robert Livermore, a teacher at King Kamehameha III Elementary, said he understands the value of keeping students at the Pulelehua Project permanently. At Pulelehua, the school would have space to expand its capacity in the future, and students are already familiar and comfortable with the campus, he said.
But, he added, it seems like the department has already chosen the permanent site without seriously considering community input.
“It seemed like, out of the three choices, they only gave us one choice,” Livermore said.

Winkie said the department will solicit community input through the meetings it held with teachers and families on Tuesday, as well as through a feedback form that will remain open through the end of the month. The department doesn’t plan on holding additional meetings and hopes to choose a permanent site by next month, she said.
Steve Franz, who served as principal at King Kamehameha III Elementary until his retirement in 2022, said he would like the school to return to Front Street. Community members have a deep connection to the elementary school, he said, and it’s played an important role in Lahaina’s history.
While DOE raised concerns that the school’s original campus fell within a tsunami zone and may be affected by sea level rise, Franz said he would like the department to consider other locations in Lahaina, such as the vacant lot behind the Lahaina Recreation Center.
“Up here, it just feels wrong,” Franz said.
