Students in the Department of Economics are often interested in pursuing internships off campus. Some internships offer significant hands-on job and career experience, while some offer more academic experience in a non-classroom setting. Students also participate in independent studies, or research, for credit.

The department regularly notifies students of internship opportunities. To receive an academic credit for an internship with academic content, students should discuss the internship details with the DUS before the start of the internship.

Finding Career-focused Internships

There are several offices and tools at Johns Hopkins to help students find internships. Those include working with the Economics Club, the Life Design Lab, and University Experiential Learning. The Center for Financial Economics also offers an intersession course, Seminar in Financial Literacy, that connects students with Johns Hopkins alumni working in the financial services industry.

Life Design Lab

The Life Design Lab supports students to connect their academic pursuits to post-graduate goals. Undergraduate and master’s students have access to life design programs and courses, experiential learning opportunities, and connections with alumni and employers through assigned Life Design Educators.

Economics Club

The JHU Economics Club connects current economics undergraduate students with each other, economics graduate students, Johns Hopkins alumni and other professionals working in relevant fields. The club organizes two to three events per semester and all Hopkins undergraduates with interest in economics are invited to participate.

Students are encouraged to become general body members of the Economics Club to receive emails about upcoming internships. Details about the Economics Club and their events are also posted on the Economics Club website .

Guidelines for Internships with Academic Credit

The overarching principle is that an internship should qualify for academic credit only if it has genuine academic content (typically a significant reading list and a significant written evaluation or project). Unlike a classroom course, the student takes major responsibility for crafting the reading list and the written project. Our specific guidelines:

  • A student wishing to do a for-credit internship must get approval from the DUS prior to the start of the internship and find a faculty sponsor. Once approved by the DUS, they have to enroll in a 1-credit and S/U independent study (AS 180.501) under a section for their faculty sponsor.
  • Before accepting the applicant, the sponsor may ask for a written proposal, laying out the reading and the writing project (or some acceptable substitute). Frequently, sponsors will help guide students to appropriate reading, but primary responsibility falls on the student.
  • According to university rules , internships cannot offer more than one credit.
  • The internship will be graded S/U by the faculty sponsor. Credit will be based only upon the academic component of the internship (likely the reading and the writing). If at the end of the semester, the faculty sponsor finds that the academic component of the internship was not successfully completed, the student will be assigned a U grade.
  • We will generally only consider applications for for-credit internships from students who have taken the relevant background courses. For example, we are unlikely to approve an internship at a financial institution from an applicant who has not pursued adequate background in our financial economics courses.

Independent Study

Independent study works in many ways like an internship. The student finds a sponsor within the Department of Economics and develops a study plan including reading and most likely a written project. There are however some important differences:

  • Independent studies generally do not involve a placement off campus; they are more like on-campus courses but with only one student and that student taking a much more active role in designing the project.
  • The number of credits is not limited to one; it can be 1-3 credits. The number of credits is determined by the faculty sponsor.
  • Independent Studies can be graded S/U or for letter grade.

Generally speaking, faculty members will be willing to serve as independent-study sponsors only for students who have demonstrated an ability to work independently and who have completed all of the courses which would ordinarily be thought of as prerequisites for a study of the kind proposed by the student.

Students can pursue research either through completing a one- to three-credit independent study with a faculty mentor from the department, or pursuing a senior thesis in their junior or senior year with a faculty mentor from the department. The senior thesis requires registering for two courses: AS 180.521 (Research in Economics) and AS 180.522 (Senior Thesis). Students should contact their economics adviser or the DUS to learn more details.

Research Opportunities

Undergraduate research helps students apply classroom learning to new situations and gain a variety of disciplinary skills. It offers a unique opportunity for students to engage in inquiry in their chosen field of study and develop practical hands-on knowledge.  Faculty and PhD students in the Department of Economics occasionally have the need to hire undergraduate research assistants (URAs).  Projects can include gathering and analysis of economic data, creating charts and graphs, coding, and checking mathematical calculations. Having experience with economic modeling software is helpful, but not always required.

Our majors have conducted undergraduate research within our department, with faculty from other academic departments, and at off-campus internships. In addition, economics students also have the opportunity to write an honors thesis or complete an independent study project.  Please read below to learn more about recommended skills (and where to get them), available department research projects, and other undergraduate research opportunities at Cornell.

Recommended skills: Stata, SAS, Excel, MATLab . . .  where can you get these skills ?

Putting Your Thesis to Work

I've always been impressed by the many ways our students find to link their studies with their larger goals and ambitions in life! Below, I'll be highlighting the stories of a number of students who have done just that, by using their senior thesis project as a springboard to their life and career after Union!

To get us started, we have Chad Salazar, Class of '22, who parlayed his thesis project into two opportunities beyond Union! Click on his name to read more about his experience.

If you would like to share the story of using your thesis to jumpstart your career, please send me a short account of your experience! I hope to make this an ongoing part of the Department's webpage, and highlight the amazing research our students are doing and the creative ways they are putting that experience to work!

Lewis Davis

What drives people to buy energy efficient products? What causes a neighbor to put solar panels on their roof? During my two terms of thesis research, I got the chance to dive into these questions using data and literature on renewable energy and consumer behavior for these “green” goods.

During the second term of my thesis, I had the amazing opportunity to work for the Alliance for Clean Energy in New York (ACE NY). During the internship I exceled at market research and legislative ideas, drawing parallel ideas to the work I had conducted on the European renewable energy marketplace in my thesis project. I began to expand my knowledge about energy efficient products around the world, in addition to learning the everyday assembly matters in my own state.

The conclusion of my thesis resulted in some interesting findings and an expectedly high monetary value above all else, but what I had also found was a passion for renewable energy research. I believe that Union College and Professor Mehmet Sener gave me the freedom to explore exactly what I was impassioned by, and along the road this led to some great job opportunities.

During my last term at Union, I was offered a fellowship by Novitium Energy as a solar researcher. Finding the best locations to create governmental and commercial solar fields will help bring the future of renewable energy to fruition. I am proud to say I will use many of the research and data techniques I have learned During my time working with Professor Sener.

Master Internship

Most of the Master students who do a major thesis in the Business Economics Group will also do an internship under supervision of BEC.

An internship can be done at various organizations, governments or firms all over the world, as long as the internship at these institutions is related to the research and education themes of the BEC. Doing an internship is a great way to explore your field of interest.

One major requirement that should be met by the internship provider is that there is guaranteed supervision on an academic level by at least one staff member of the organization.

If you want to discuss the possibilities for internships, please make an appointment with prof. Alfons Oude Lansink (in case you are a MME student) or prof. Henk Hogeveen (in case you are a MFS student) by contacting the secretary ( [email protected] ).

If you want to read more about the internship procedure, visit our “Business Economics – Thesis, Internship, Research practice” Brightspace. (Use the Discover tab in Brightspace to find us and to enroll yourself.) If you have general questions about doing an internship in the field of Business Economics, you can always contact the education coordinator, dr Monique Mourits ( [email protected] ).

If you are looking for support in finding an internship please consider the support of Student Career Services WUR ( www.wur.eu/studentcareerservices ).

Are you considering an internship abroad? You could apply for an Erasmus grant. Click here for more information. MME students can get help from Integrand to find an internship. Integrand is a student organisation. Go to their website here .

Bachelor's programmes

Starting your educational career in a bachelor’s programme at a university is a tough decision. “Small scale” and “personal” may not be terms you would immediately associate with a university. But it is around these concepts that Problem-Based Learning (PBL) revolves. For the duration of your bachelor’s programme at SBE, you will be working in small groups where you actively discuss problems with your fellow students and tutors. Scientific research has also shown that by actively applying your knowledge during the tutorial group meetings you are more likely to remember new facts than by simply sitting in a packed lecture hall. The practical experience you gain and the skills you develop during your three year bachelor’s programme at the School of Business and Economics will give you a significant advantage when entering the business world.

Master's programmes

At the School of Business and Economics we believe that education should be centred on you, the student. And to us, you're not one of many master's students filling a seat in a crowded lecture hall. Instead, you work in small groups and together with your fellow master’s students you seek solutions to real world problems. This means that you are continuously exchanging knowledge, experiences and opinions with your group members as well as the academic staff. When you are driven by a spirit of inquiry that motivates you to go deeper than memorisation and a shallow understanding of concepts you are at the right spot here at the School of Business and Economics.

Research master's programmes

The Research Master programme is primarily research oriented: It combines a training in analytical and research skills while gaining a solid knowledge in your discipline of interest (either Financial and Economic Research, or Business Research). The programme equips you with the necessary skills to become experts in research . You will be prepared to successfully lead research projects and to make confident, data-driven decisions. Considering the importance that organisations attach to analytical skills within a discipline, a Research Master diploma significantly improves your careers prospects.

The Research Master is also the ideal preparation for a scientific, academic career . The majority of our Research Master students seamlessly continue their research career and enter the PhD programme at Maastricht University, or any other (inter)national university.

The Research Master programme is a two-year Master programme (120 ECTS) that is offered at the Graduate School of Business and Economics (GSBE). It is accesible to students with outstanding study results in their (under) graduate program in business, economics, econometrics or other relevant disciplines. GSBE’s strong connection to the academic and professional world will introduce you to the most advanced research and gives you the opportunity to create a tailor-made experience .

The School of Business and Economics encourages bachelor's and master's students to do internships within the Netherlands or abroad. As an intern, you gain grounded and practical experience of what your studies might look like in a work environment which enhances your studies as well as it increases your employability and professional network. Many graduates often end up working at the organisation where they intern.

Are you a current SBE student and looking for the rules and regulations on how to get an internship accredited for credits? Please refer to SBE's Student Intranet  (MySBE Intranet).

Combine thesis & internship

Rather than face a trade-off between finishing your studies and doing an internship, SBE master’s students have the option of combining the two. During the Thesis-Internship Programme (TIP), your thesis will be written on a topic relevant to a company or organisation during a part-time internship. This gives your thesis focus and applicability and gives you practical work experience. We see this as a win–win initiative for both student and company. As a student, you conduct research on a real problem in a real company, translating theory into hands-on practice. At the same time, you gain valuable professional experience and contacts to kick-start your career.

If you are a student of Maastricht University, please visit the intranet for more information .

Non-degree ('bijvak' and contract education)

Are you interested in a single course or skills training? If so, you can become a contract student. On a contract basis you can participate in courses and take exams, and you can use the University Library and other UM facilities. We offer approximately 300 courses and skills training on bachelor's and master's level.

Are you a bachelor's or master's student already studying at Maastricht University, but not at the School of Business and Economics? You can take individual courses and skills as a subsidiary student.

Monetary Affairs represents DNB's 'central bank' tasks. That includes steering stable prices in the economy; important for financial stability and sustainable prosperity. The tasks of Monetary Affairs are to a very large extent part of and embedded in the broader DNB organisation, the Eurosystem, the European Central Bank (ECB) and the national central banks of the euro countries combined. Stories of our interns

thesis internship economics

My internship completely changed my perception of DNB in a positive way.

Want to learn more or apply?

Below you will find a number of frequently asked questions and our current internship vacancies.

Why should I opt for an internship at DNB?

DNB is a large organisation with social impact, positioned at the centre of both financial and economic developments. We employ 2,100 involved staff, each with their own background and expertise, making DNB a work environment where you can learn a lot and gain new experiences. Our interns have access to Young DNB. As part of this internal network for young DNB employees, you can share (professional) knowledge and participate in fun events. And finally, working at DNB means working in a beautiful office right in the bustling city centre of Amsterdam.

What educational background do I need to apply for a DNB internship?

Just like our permanent employees, our interns come from various backgrounds. Whether you are majoring in communication, finance, physics, art history or law: DNB offers internship opportunities for almost any educational background.

What is the difference between a hands-on and a research/graduate internship?

A hands-on internship means you are a fully-fledged member of a DNB department that fits your educational background or interests. Your internship does not involve a course-specific assignment, but you do get to know all the aspects of the work done within that department. A research or graduate internship revolves around a specific research project established in deliberation with your college or university thesis supervisor and your DNB internship supervisor. You spend a large portion of your internship on your research and dissertation but you also get to experience all aspects of working at DNB.

Will I get a trainee allowance from DNB?

Yes, of course! Wo-, hbo and mbo students receive a monthly allowance of € 650,- gross. This is based on 36 hours per week. You can then decide whether you work 4 x 9 hours or divide your hours over 5 working days. Do you not have a student travel product? Then we will reimburse your public transport costs.

Can I continue to work at DNB after my internship?

Once you have completed your internship and both parties are pleased with the outcome, we will be happy to explore the possibilities. This may constitute a permanent position, subject to availability.

I’m not a native Dutch speaker. Is it possible to apply for an internship at DNB?

International students are welcome at DNB and can apply for any vacancy published in English. However, as we are the Dutch central bank, many departments within DNB are Dutch-oriented. If you want to apply for a vacancy published in Dutch, we require solid conversational skills in Dutch.

I have another question; how can I get an answer?

Didn't find an answer to your question? Get in touch with Christa de Vries at [email protected].

Master's Degree in Data Science

The master focuses on the acquisition of capabilities that are relevant to the real world and can be effectively applied in the real world both in academic research and in private companies and public bodies. Hence the master foresees a traineeship/internship period followed by a final exam consisting in a discussion of an original work.

Several options are possible. The internship can be in fact spent in a company, public body or research institute, or group. The internship (or "Tirocinio curriculare" in Italian) grants 8 CFUs, while the thesis grants 16 CFUs. The student has two options: 1. Internship report.She/he can decide whether to discuss a thesis based on the work done during the internship. In this case, the internship must be prolonged to cover 22 CFUs (the remaining 2 CFUs being for the preparation of the final Thesis). Since 1 CFU corresponds to 25 hours of work, in this case, the internship corresponds to ca. 550 hours of work in the hosting body, and the final exam will consist in the discussion of an original work written by the student on the results obtained during the internship. 2. Academic thesis. The student may decide to keep the internship and the thesis separate. In this case, the internship corresponds to only 200 hours of work in the hosting body. In this case, the internship can also be spent in a Research Institute (both public and private). The final exam will then consist of a discussion of an original work done by the student on a research project. Also, in this case, the internship and the academic thesis can be -if necessary- paired.

Internship report The student, during the internship, will be under the joint supervision of a person delegated to this task by the host, and of a UNINA professor designated by the coordinator upon request of the student. At the end of the internship, the student will present a written report and a work diary which will be used by the academic supervisor to evaluate the results of the internship. Reports must be in English. In the case of an extended internship (22 CFUs), the final exam will be based on the discussion of an extended written report which must match the standards of an academic thesis (see below). The contents of this report will be regulated by a specific agreement between the host institution and the LMDS, to protect intellectual property and/or copyrights).

Academic thesis It can be done within UNINA or at other Universities in Italy or abroad or at research Institutes both national (such as INFN, INAF, INGV, CNR) and international. Research theses are always conducted under the supervision of a faculty member. In the case of a thesis conducted in collaboration with UNINA but outside the SPSB or at other institutions (see above) a second supervisor (domain expert) will be required. The thesis must lead to an original result, must be written in English, and must be exhaustive, i.e. it must be understandable also by a competent person who is not an expert of the specific field. Data science is also about communicating the results of your work to domain experts and, therefore this is a very important requisite. The thesis or final report must be written in Latex using the template downloadable here.

Procedures for the Internship UNINA has a specific office taking care of internships . Please check the site to make sure that you have the most recent documentation and to monitor special calls (in Italian "Bandi") for internship applications. As a first step, you must read the student's vademecum. Unfortunately, it is in Italian. If you need an English translation, contact the coordinator. The procedures, however, are summarised in what follows: First of all, be aware that the procedures for traineeships/internships are rather different for activities "intramoenia" (i.e. in other Departments or University structures outside of the SPSB) or "extramoenia" (i.e. outside UNINA.)

Internships should be performed in the second semester of the second year but exceptions are possible if agreed upon - well in advance - with the coordinator of the Master. Internships require the existence of an agreement between the University Federico II (or a Department) and the host institution. Here you can find a list of existing agreements . If the company you are interested in is not in this list, DO NOT PANIC!. It is possible to stipulate specific agreements with new legal entities and to do so, you just need to follow the procedure outlined below.

1. Inform the coordinator of the master. 2. Download the right form: ( Italy only , European countries , and non-European countries ). This agreement will define the collaboration between the two parts. Get it signed by the host institution (two copies). 3. Hand the signed copies to the coordinator who will transmit them to the delegate for the traineeships. 4. Wait until the bureaucracy has been completed and the host appears in the list of the agreements (see above). Usually it takes between 20 and 30 days. 5. Download the " Student's guide ". 6. Fill this online form . 7. Go on "modulistica" and click on "Compila progetto Fomrativo extramoenia" and fill the online form (there is also the English version).. During the internship, the student is required to fill the activity booklet downloadable here . IMPORTANT NOTICE: remember that in signing the various documents you also agree to respect the intellectual rights and any "privacy agreement" foreseen in the contract. This clause holds during and after the traineeship period. At the end of the internship, the host institution and the academic tutors will fill out a report summarizing your activities and your performances. This report together with your relationship must be handed (or e-mailed) to the coordinator of the master who will transmit the results to the secretary.

Procedures for an Academic Thesis The thesis work must take place in the second semester of the Second Year. In any case, it cannot start before the student has completed all but three exams. Students must: Read the regulation (Ita, EN) and chack that you have fulfilled all requirements. Pay special attention in respecting the deadlines and the procedures. Fill out this online form

Once it is completed the student needs to: i) Reserve a slot in the planned session (see calendar). To do so, he needs to fill out this form and to pay the "laurea Tax" using this bulletin. ii) 15 days before the session he must hand to the secretary (either via mail or in person using a CD or a USB pen) a pdf file containing the manuscript. This manuscript must be written in Latex or Tex using the template which can be downloaded here. iii) the final exam will consist of a 30/40 minutes presentation plus Q&A time.

The internal regulation for the evaluation of the final score (which will take into account the academic record and the final exam) can be found here.
