This paper examines the impact of monetary and fiscal policies on economic activity in Zimbabwe by employing a modified St Louis equation for the period 1981:4 to 1998:3. The main objective is to determine the relative effectiveness of monetary and fiscal policies on the economic growth process in Zimbabwe using the new econometric techniques of time series, cointegration and error correction approach. The regression results suggest that the monetary influence is relatively stronger and more predictable than fiscal policy in determining economic activity. These results suggest that monetary policy can be relied on as a successful macroeconomic stabilization tool in Zimbabwe. Fiscal policy should be streamlined as it is found to have an insignificant impact on economic activity in Zimbabwe. The impulse dummies which are included in the model in order to reduce the impact of outliers in the scaled residuals were also found to be significant. These impulse dummies are for the period when Zimbabwe experienced severe drought and also a bumper harvest. Exports had an insignificant impact on economic activity. The estimated equations are found to exhibit structural stability implying their usefulness for the purpose of forecasting and policy analysis. Money supply is found to be consistent with economic theory, having monetary base as the most important variable.

The study verifies the theoretical literature of Osaze (2011) that opined that foreign portfolio investments (FPI) destabilize Nigeria economy. It specifically employed time series data for the period 1986-2015 sourced from Central Bank of Nigeria (C.B.N) bulletin and World Bank analyzed with Error Correction Model (ECM), Ordinary least square and correlation techniques to determine whether FPI stimulate or destabilize economic performance of Nigeria. Based on the results generated by the analyses, at short run, FPI with t-statistics of -4.225760 significantly and negatively impact the economic performance of Nigeria unlike stock Market Development with t- statistics of 3.947143 and Capital formation 10.97692 with t- statistics of 2.389578 that significantly and positively impact economic performance of Nigeria at the short run. The results of long run Ordinary Least squares (OLS) also confirm that, FPI with t-statistics -0.726212 negatively impact economic performance of Nigeria ...

The aim of this study is to examine the macroeconomic indicators that pull and/or push foreign portfolio investment (FPI) inflows in South Africa. The ARDL method of co-integration and the bounds test are employed to establish a dynamic relationship between the macroeconomic indicators. The bounds test revealed that there is a long run relationship between FPI and its regressors where all the push and pull variables determine the FPI significantly. The short-run relationship between the FPI and its regressors are also estimated alongside with the rate at which diverging variables return to equilibrium after a short-run shock. Both pull and push variables are significant determinants of FPI in the short-run and it returns to the long-run equilibrium at the speed of 73 percent after a short-run shock. Makroekonomik göstergeler arasında dinamik bir ilişki kurmak için ARDL eşbütünleşme yöntemi ve sınır testi kullanılmıştır. Sınır testi, FPI ile regresörleri arasındaki tüm itme ve çekme değişkenlerinin FPI'yı anlamlı bir şekilde etkilediği ve aralarında uzun süreli bir ilişki olduğunu ortaya koymuştur. FPI ve regresörleri arasındaki kısa süreli ilişki, kısa süreli bir şokun ardından, değişkenlerin dengeye dönme hızı ile birlikte tahmin edilmektedir. Hem çekme hem de itme değişkenleri kısa vadede FPI'ın önemli belirleyicileriyken, kısa süreli bir şokun ardından tüm sapma değişkenleri yüzde 73 hızla uzun dönem dengesine geri dönmektedir.

The hyperinflation era in Zimbabwe (2003-2008) eroded pensioners’ capital values and has seen pre-dollarisation retirees receiving paltry pension payouts from year 2009. We review global trends on foreign investments for pension funds in order to add input to the local debate pitting the Zimbabwe Association of Pension Funds (ZAPF) members against the Insurance and Pensions Commission (IPEC) on whether the Pension and Provident Fund Act [Chapter 24:6] of Zimbabwe should permit foreign/offshore investment. We interview ZAPF members & partners and carry out secondary analysis of data on pension payouts, asset management and life & pensions asset allocations and returns post-dollarisation. Findings reveal that meeting liquidity and diversification goals require allowances for foreign investments. ZAPF members and partners would welcome any level of foreign investments allowance, despite Zimbabwe offering weighted returns that are above those currently obtainable from foreign assets. We conclude that there is lack of confidence in the long-term sustainability of the capital values and returns given that the tenure of the prevailing Multi-Currency System (Dollarisation) is uncertain and hence the need to allow limited foreign investment by pension funds. This study sought to determine the effectiveness of investment banking strategies of Zimbabwean banks in securing on-lending finance for the period 2009-2013. Literature review provided the theoretical framework for the whole study and considered empirical evidence as well. It outlined and discussed the main investment banking activities on the capital markets. The descriptive survey was the research design adopted for the study. A representative sample of five individuals from the investments section of the Exchange control division of the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe was selected to participate in the study. Questionnaires and interviews were used as research instruments. The study revealed that over the review period, the investment banking function of banks in Zimbabwe was ineffective in mobilizing adequate financing for on-lending to borrowers. Faculty of Law

Faculty of Law which started as a department in the Faculty of Social Studies (and later as a department in the Faculty of Commerce) has grown by leaps and bounds.

The Faculty has a proud and illustrious legal history having trained most of the country’s lawyers including judges.

Our Faculties

Master’s in women’s law.

This is a regional programme and a significant number of places during each intake are reserved for regional candidates drawn from countries such as Zambia, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Malawi, Lesotho, etc.

Entry Requirements

The minimum requirements are a good first degree in law (usually a 2.1 pass) and in exceptional cases a degree in a related discipline (e.g Social Science or Gender or Development Studies) would be acceptable as well.

In the selection process the candidate's post-graduation work and other experience in areas related to women and the law will be taken into account.

Programme duration and structure

The programme will normally commence in January of each calendar year and will run until May/June of the following year (18 months).

1 . The first semester (15 weeks) will focus on theories and methodologies in Women’s Law - comprising lectures, seminars, fieldwork and research methodology practicals. That is:

The first semester will normally be conducted from January to April in the year in which the programme begins, although the University reserves the right to vary the time when this section of the programme is offered in any year.

2 . The second semester which will run for 12 weeks, normally commencing in mid June of the year in which a programme commences. In this semester candidates will:

3.2.1.1 The WLC shall determine which optional

During the second semester candidates will determine their dissertation topic for the third semester and develop their dissertation proposal and field work methodology and methods under the guidance of supervisors approved by the Departmental Board of the Women’s Law Centre and appointed by the Director of the Women’s Law Centre.

In the third semester each candidate shall conduct field research and present for examination a 20 000-25 000 word dissertation in a selected field in Women’s Law (see 3.2.2.1 above). The research for the dissertation should be carried out in the candidate’s home country, the writing up will, normally, be conducted at the Women’s Law Centre, University of Zimbabwe.

The food security crisis which gripped the sub Sahara Africa after the drought in 1999/2000 threatened development initiatives in these countries. Zimbabwe&rsquo s situation has since worsened and the country has failed to recuperate from the food problems, even after an improvement in the climatic conditions. International and local food aid activities then became a priority in the fight to sustain the right to food for the affected regions. It is argued in this research that if food aid is distributed on the basis of need it will enable the vulnerable populations recuperate form food insecurity problems. It is also postulated that if well implemented, food aid programmes are also able to play the dual role of averting starvation and leading to long term development. This thesis departs from the allegations of food aid politicisation in Zimbabwe.

Using the rational choice and neopatrimonial theories of individual behaviour, this research endeavored to ascertain whether political decisions influenced the government food aid distributions which were conducted through the Grain Marketing Board. In line with these theories, it is argued in this study that politicians behave in a manner that maximizes the fulfillment of their individual needs rather than the needs of the people who vote them in positions of power.

A qualitative approach was adopted in this study and data was gathered through household interviews in the Seke and Goromonzi districts of the Mashonaland East province in Zimbabwe. Furthermore, interviews were conducted with food aid experts from the governmental and non governmental organisations dealing with food security issues in Zimbabwe.

What Six Senior Music Majors’ Say About Their Theses

As the Spring semester concludes and in anticipation for the Class of 2024’s graduation, the Music Department asked six Senior Music Majors to expand on their creative theses and offer advice to future students preparing their own. The Music Department is proud to share the results of each Music Major’s cumulative work at Princeton, which highlights scholarly research and true mastery of their disciplines. 

Jared Bozinko

Thesis: SIN PHONY for two soprano clarinets, two auxiliary clarinets, two saxophones, and two horns

Jared:  In the process of writing  SIN PHONY , I found inspiration in seemingly twee places. Poulenc’s  Sonata for horn, trumpet and trombone,  Prokofiev’s  Romeo and Juliet , a 1995 clarinet quartet by Met Opera clarinetist Sean Osborn, and Ligeti’s  Six Bagatelles , a quirky wind quintet version of his  Musica ricercata .  SIN PHONY  is a chamber piece, technically an octet, for clarinets, saxes, and horns. My advisor, Dr. Dmitri Tymoczko, has been indispensable to the process, guiding me all fall semester in writing short chamber music sketches, which became the basis of the material that makes up my thesis. The process was so smooth and, at points, genuinely fun, and it was a great challenge as a composer to blend disparate thematic material from sketches written completely separately into cohesive, compelling music that had cohesion and let my compositional voice shine through.

Tanaka Dunbar Ngwara

Thesis: Paivapo ’76: A New Musical 

Tanaka:  My thesis was an original musical entitled Paivapo ’76 and set in Domboshava Zimbabwe in 1976, during the Zimbabwean Liberation War. The show deals with the conflict between traditional practice/spirituality and Christianity, and explores themes of community, first love and grief. I received the Alex Adam ’07 Award to conduct research for this project over the summer and since the musical also served as independent work for my theater and music theater certificates, I was able to premiere the piece on May 3rd, 4th and 5th in the Wallace Theater in the Lewis Center Complex. 

Thesis: Flung Into Space: A Collection of Songs

Nina:   My thesis is a collection of six songs titled  Flung Into Space . It consists of three story heavy songs about my life, along with an electronic counterpart for each which explores the same topic from a new perspective. 

Rupert Peacock

Thesis: John Farrant’s “O Lord Allmighty (ca. 1570):  The English Anthem at Ely Cathedral With Critical Edition

Rupert:  My thesis is a critical edition and history surrounding a piece of unpublished English choral music. The piece is called “O Lord Almighty” by John Farrant. I went to the library at Cambridge University and looked through manuscripts from Ely cathedral, which is about 10 minutes from where I live in the UK. I found lots of great and famous choral works, but stumbled across this piece by Farrant almost by accident. Professor Wendy Heller taught me everything I needed to know to get this done. She’s an expert in critical editions and this kind of research. I couldn’t have done it without her.

Molly Trueman

Thesis: Angels & Aliens: The Making of an Album

Molly:  For my thesis, I wrote and recorded my debut full-length album entitled  Angels & Aliens . Based around acoustic guitar and vocals, the album has an alternative indie-folk feel. This is a milestone I’ve been working towards for a few years now, so I’m incredibly grateful that this album ended up being my thesis.

Thesis: Breaking the Sound Barrier: Investigating Latine Racial Bias Through Reggaetón Music

Gabriela:  For my thesis, I researched colorism within Latine communities through reggaetón music. I knew I was interested in looking at identity and Latin music, but it wasn’t until I heard my advisor, Lisa Margulis, present her work in music cognition that I saw a potential connection with psychology fields. 

If you were to describe your thesis in one word, what would it be?

Jared :  Darksided (hehe)

Tanaka:  Fusion

Nina:  Honest

Rupert:  Difficult!

Molly:  Extraterrestrial

Gabriela:  Interdisciplinary!

What advice would you give to future seniors on creating a successful thesis?

Jared:  Don’t be afraid that your thesis isn’t going to materialize in time, instead, always try to remember just why you chose this amazing department, and to remember your likely lifelong personal devotion to music. There’s a lot to love about being able to share your art as the capstone of your work at Princeton. 

Tanaka:  If you can, use the thesis as an opportunity to work on something that you’ve always wanted to do, but never had the time to do! It’s amazing to have the excuse of a thesis project to give you the drive and space to complete it. 

Nina:  Try to start without judgement. The hardest part of writing my thesis was my own expectations of what my thesis should look like. 

Rupert:  It has to be something you care about and/or are passionate about. It got to the point where I was actually looking forward to the next steps in my thesis and enjoyed working on it. That was crucial for motivation!

Molly:  In terms of creating a thesis, my biggest piece of advice is to find a topic that you’re truly passionate about. Don’t settle for something you don’t care about.

Gabriela:  You don’t always have to have a topic and then find an advisor, you can start by finding an advisor you are interested in working with and craft your topic from there.

What are your plans after graduation?

Jared:  Still figuring it out, though I’m certain I want music to be a core component of my everyday life. I am trying to move to Philadelphia and get involved with their variety of music scenes, from DIY punk basement shows to chamber orchestras to early music groups. I also want to continue composing and am eager to hone my craft even further wherever I go. 

Tanaka:  I’m going to attend the Royal Academy of Music for Music Theater vocal performance! I’m very excited to be in a new city, and get to do another music degree in a conservatory.

Nina:  I’m moving to Nashville, TN and pursuing a career as a performing musician. I’ll also be releasing music soon as a part of the band Upwhirl, as well as later this year releasing my thesis. 

Rupert:  I am going to split my time between singing and construction!

Molly:  After graduation, I’m going to McGill University to study in the Sound Recording program.

Gabriela:  I hope to work in theater administration in New York!
