Danilovsky Market

Danilovsky Market, located in a flat, circular Soviet modernist building, which looks like a kind of retro spaceship, is still a trendsetter. Come here for the best Vietnamese pho soup in Moscow and the famous “rat” burger (which is, in fact, made from nutria meat), as well as fresh produce from Russia’s southern provinces and a small vintage market in one of the annexes.

Bricket Market

Bricket Market, located on the top floor of the trendy shopping mall Tsvetnoy opened in September 2019. Head to Testa for Neapolitan pizza, Inzhir for innovative desserts and coffee and Ostorozhno, Slon! (Look Out, Elephant!), where an Indian chef cooks traditional thali set meals. There’s an open space in the middle of the market, which is used for public talks.

A view from above of diners seated at tables in a food market

Central Market

Central Market is located right across from the station exit at Trubnaya Metro. The sign at the entrance says “1840”, but the building is actually brand new – that date refers to when Muscovites started trading in Trubnaya square. There’s a small delicatessen and fruit and veg market, a couple of coffee shops, and a cider bar. Around 40 different stalls serve dishes from round the world. The market also houses a restaurant, Gorynych , which is devoted to “new Russian” cuisine – traditional food prepared with a modern twist.

Vokrug Sveta

Vokrug Sveta (Around the World) on Nikolskaya St became party central during the FIFA World Cup 2018 as most of the football fans gathered there. As the name suggests, there are stalls with cuisine from all over the world. Head here for Pakistani food, or Canadian poutine – fries with gravy and cheese. This is also a great place to try poke, the Hawaiian seafood and rice dish, which is popular all over Moscow.

Another food market that is a must-see on any foodie’s tour of Moscow is Depo , so far the largest one in Moscow , hosted in a former tram depot. Depo has a smallish farmers market and more than 70 stalls, where one can sample food from around the world.

What to eat in Russia? Top 23 Russian Desserts

Top 23 Russian Desserts

MAIN INGREDIENTS

Flour

These traditional Russian pancakes are prepared with flour, eggs, milk, yeast, and a pinch of salt. What distinguishes them from other pancakes is the addition of yeast, since similar equivalents mostly do not add any leavening agents. The batter is poured over a hot pan, shaped into a circle, and fried for a couple of minutes on both sides. The tradition of preparing this traditional Russian dish originates from ancient times: it was a ceremonial dish, served during the pagan holiday called Maslenitsa – a week-long festivity praising the end of winter and the celebration of spring. With their shape and color, blini symbolized the long-awaited Sun. However, blini are not consumed exclusively during Maslenitsa, as they have become one of the most popular dishes in Russia, and are also commonly eaten around the world. Blini are extremely versatile and can be served with sweet or savory fillings. Some of the Russian favorites include various jams, condensed milk, while the most famous savory version is topped with fish roe or caviar.

Medovik is a popular Russian layered honey cake consisting of honey-infused, almost biscuit-like sponges that are coated with thin layers of cream. Although there are numerous variations of the cake, the custard is usually prepared with whipped cream or various combinations of condensed milk and butter. It is believed that the cake first appeared in the 1820s and was initially created for the wife of Alexander I of Russia. The addition of condensed milk probably originates from the Soviet era, while modern variations may include berries or even chocolate. Medovik is traditionally decorated with ground walnuts and is commonly served on various special occasions.

Varenye is a traditional Russian dessert consisting of various fruits and berries cooked together with sugar. The ingredients should not lose their shape, dissolve, or overcook in order for varenye to be properly prepared. Originally, varenye was cooked with honey before 1801 because Russia didn't produce its own sugar, and imported sugar was too expensive. Today, varenye is traditionally served at Russian tea parties, and the most popular varieties are prepared with strawberries, apricots, blueberries, and cherries. There are also some exotic varieties made with dandelion, tangerine, and rose petals. It can be consumed on its own, used as a topping for pancakes, or as a filling for various cookies and pies. Varenye is so popular that it was even one of the favorite desserts of some Russian tsars, Catherine II, and Ivan the Terrible.

Ptichye moloko

dessert market

One of Russia's most beloved desserts, ptichye moloko is a decadent cake famous for its reversed cake-to-filling ratio: the thick, but exceptionally light, almost soufflé-like layers of silky custard are separated by thin, fluffy, and moist layers of sponge cake, while the whole confection is topped with a rich chocolate ganache glaze. Ptichye moloko was first made in 1978 by Vladimir Guralnik, who was the head patisserie chef at Moscow's prestigious Praga restaurant. And just like the popular milk-flavored, meringue-filled candy bar that inspired Guralnik to make the cake version, the Russian ptichye moloko (lit. bird's milk) got its whimsical name as a reference to an old idiom denoting "something so exquisite, delicate and rare it probably doesn't even exist". Interestingly, the name caught up immediately and also seemed quite fitting, as bird's milk cake was invented during the heyday of the USSR, rapidly gaining popularity of mass proportions among the Soviet consumers despite being expensive and relatively hard to purchase at the time. In the US, this cake is still popular among Russian immigrants who often use Cool Whip and gelatin to get the right consistency.

Napolyeon tort

Napolyeon tort is a traditional Russian cake consisting of layers of thin and flaky puff pastry and a rich and smooth pastry cream sandwiched between the layers. The layers are usually made with a combination of flour, salt, butter, white vinegar, a bit of vodka, and eggs, while the pastry cream usually consists of milk, egg yolks, sugar, and cornstarch. Each baked layer is topped with pastry cream and a frosting made with a combination of butter, powdered sugar, vanilla, and heavy cream. The frosting is also added to the sides and top of the cake, which can be additionally decorated with cake sprinkles, berries, nuts, or chocolate shavings, if desired. The cake should be chilled overnight so that the frosting seeps into the layers and the cake develops a very soft texture. The Russian Napoleon cake differs from the French Napoleon cake in the fact that it has as much as 15 thin layers and it's left to chill until super moist and tender.

Small, but packed with flavor, the batter for these famous Russian pancakes differs from those for traditional pancakes as it is prepared with kefir, a fermented milk product with a slightly sour taste. Aside from kefir, the remaining ingredients for oladyi are typical for any run-of-the-mill pancake – flour, sugar, salt, and eggs. They are pan-fried into small rounds, similar to American-style pancakes. The pancakes turn golden brown when finished, and they are chewy with crunchy edges. They are slightly sweet and neutral in flavor, while the kefir lends them a mild sour note. These small, thick pancakes can be served plain or with honey, chocolate, fresh fruit, sour cream, or a variety of fruit preserves. Fresh fruit and chocolate chips are also occasionally added to the batter. Oladyi are a typical breakfast dish, and they are best served hot off the griddle while they are still fluffy and soft in the center and crunchy around the edges.

Delicate, airy, and moist, sharlotka is the most popular Russian apple pie, mainly due to the ease of its preparation. It consists of eggs, sugar, flour, baking soda, and apple slices, but some people like to add honey or cinnamon into the cake in order to improve its flavors. The cake is very low in calories, which might be another reason for its popularity. It is recommended to allow the cake to cool before serving and sprinkle it with powdered sugar on top.

Pastila is a traditional Russian sweet originating from the 17th century. It is a cross between candy and meringue cookies: light and airy puffs made from egg whites, sugar, and fruit, reminiscent of the popular Turkish Delight . Traditionally, pastila are made from sour apples or berries, although other types of fruit can also be used. Pastila from Kolomna is thought to be the most delicious variety, and the recipe for Kolomensky pastila has been closely guarded until the 19th century. At the same time, the confectioners started using sugar instead of honey, a practice which is still in use today. Pastila is usually consumed as a dessert in between meals, although it is also often served with tea as an afternoon snack.

The Target Market for Desserts: The Sweet Tooth Demographic?

Who doesn’t love dessert? Yet defining the target market for desserts isn’t as straightforward as many might think.

For instance, not everyone loves every kind of dessert. Some people may love dessert by may be limited by the types of dessert they can eat. This could be because of health or dietary restrictions.

So if you own a bakery and are planning to carry desserts for sale, or if you manage a restaurant and need to decide what desserts to carry on your menu, you’ll need to be perfectly clear about who your ideal customer is and what they would and would not want in a dessert.

In this article, we’ll review the target market for desserts and understand the factors that drive consumer decisions to order one type of dessert or another.

Who is the Target Market for Desserts?

The best way to understand the target market for desserts is to analyze the need that people have for ordering dessert in a restaurant or simply raiding the fridge looking for one in the middle of the night.

Target Market for Desserts

Asking ourselves why someone would want a dessert gives us the following segments of the target market for desserts:

 • People who like ending their meal with a dessert
 • People who want to celebrate a special occasion with a dessert
 • People who crave something sweet
 • People who want to have a snack
 • People looking for comfort food
 • People who want to buy a food item to take to someone else’s home
 • People who want to support a local bakery

Let’s look closely at each of these market segments and understand what each looks for in a dessert.

#1. People who like ending their meal with a dessert

The most likely target market for desserts includes people who want to end their meal with something sweet. They’re not always looking for the biggest or the best dessert, but they do want something to cleanse their palate and retain the sweet aftertaste of a nice dessert.

In restaurants, these people are not picky. They like a long desert list on the menu and will quickly scan through to find something that looks good. They are also open to experimenting with new desserts as long as their need for something sweet is satisfied.

#2. People who want to celebrate a special occasion with a dessert

What better way to celebrate a special occasion than with a decadent dessert?

Birthdays, anniversaries, engagements, and graduations are all excellent opportunities to order a dessert. And because it’s a special occasion, people are often willing to spend a little extra on an impressive or unique dessert like a gourmet truffle or a fondant au chocolat .

When it comes to choosing a dessert for a special occasion, people usually take their time in making their selection. They want something that will make a lasting impression, so they’re willing to do their research to find the perfect place to order from. They may even ask for recommendations from friends or family and read online reviews before ordering.

#3. People who crave something sweet

From time to time, we all get a craving for something sweet. And when that happens, we usually want to satisfy it as quickly as possible!

This target market for desserts is often looking for something specific, like a piece of cake , a chocolate bar , or even an ice cream . They may even have a favorite bakery or dessert shop that they always go to when they’re in the mood for something sweet.

When people crave something sweet, their purchase is usually an impulse purchase. This is why you often see sweets and desserts placed near the cash register in convenience stores or at the entrance of a bakery. The closer the dessert is to the point of purchase, the more likely people are to buy it!

#4. People who want to have a snack

Sometimes people are just looking for a snack and dessert happens to be the perfect solution. This target market for desserts is often looking for something small and sweet that they can have as a quick pick-me-up.

Biscuits , cookies , muffins, and even cupcakes are all great snacks that can easily satisfy a sweet tooth. And because they’re portable, they’re perfect for people who are always on the go.

When it comes to choosing a snack, people often look for something that is quick and easy. They don’t want to spend a lot of time or money on a snack, so they’ll usually go for something that is familiar and convenient.

#5. People looking for comfort food

A dessert can be the perfect comfort food, especially when we’re feeling down or stressed. This target market for desserts is often looking for something sweet and familiar that will make them feel better.

Cakes , pies , and ice cream are all great comfort foods because they’re usually associated with happy memories. For example, a lot of people have fond memories of eating ice cream as a child, so it can be a great way to comfort themselves when they’re feeling down.

#6. People who want to buy a food item to take to someone else’s home

When invited to someone’s home for dinner, many people offer to bring a food item. Desserts are often the perfect solution because they’re usually easy to transport and everyone loves a sweet treat!

Many people will bake a cake or a pie to take to a dinner party because it’s a nice gesture and it’s always appreciated. And if someone’s not a great baker, they can always buy a dessert from a bakery.

#7. People who want to support a local bakery

The final segment of the target market for desserts includes people who want to support their local bakery. These people understand the importance of buying from small businesses and they appreciate the fact that they’re helping to keep the local economy strong.

When people buy from a local bakery, they’re usually looking for freshness, quality, and uniqueness. They want to know that they’re getting a product that is made with love and care.

Local bakeries often have a strong relationship with their customers, so people feel good about supporting them. They also often have a loyalty program, which encourages people to keep coming back. Getting people to come back is often the essential ingredient in the profitability of a bakery .

Given how many people love them, the target market for desserts is quite broad. So segmenting this market and understanding each segment independently is essential to understanding the full market.

In this article, we reviewed 7 segments of this market. From people who like to close their meals with dessert to those looking for a snack. From people celebrating a special occasion to those looking for comfort food, there are numerous reasons why people love dessert.

Understand these reasons and we can understand this market.

When we cook the meat on Sunday the Carne Asada gave off a smell and Was very tough and chewy. Everybody who ate the meat at the get together agreed the meat was chewy and tasted off. We threw away the meat as we deemed it was old. I went in on Monday to this location and spoke to who I assumed was the owner/manager. He remembered me purchasing the meat and I explained to him the situation. Instead of offering an apology or resolution he blamed me and said I must've left the meat in the car because it could not have been his fault. he took me to the case to show me the meat and I agreed that was what I had purchased and reiterated that it was chewy and had smelt. Again I asked if I could replace the meat that I purchased with proof of my receipt to something else. He would not do this and gave me another piece of meat to take home and cook to verify it was not my fault. He also requested that I return all the meat I had purchased in order for him to inspect it. I explained to him that due to the smell we had thrown it away. Again he said he needed to inspect it. I took home the piece of meat he gave me and cooked it and it was chewy. Considering his condescending attitude towards me and his accusations that I left the meat in the car. And the fact that the he gave me was the same quality I have chosen not to return to this location and deal with his belittling attitude. I'd like to warn others that if you have any problems with the store they will not take care of it and will accuse you of doing something wrong.

Houselessness, free markets, community support: Don't miss Victorville's resource market this Sunday

dessert market

High Desert Free Market will be hosting a free resource event this Sunday, May 19 in Victorville.

The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at at Center Street Park. The market offers free water, food, clothing, hygiene supplies, menstrual products, and COVID-19 protective equipment to High Desert residents in need.

The organization is encouraging unhoused people to show up, reserving space at the front for them with " no questions asked ."

High Desert Free Market is requesting donations before the Sunday event of tents, tarps, batteries, men's shoes, hygiene supplies, hats, sunscreen, and pet food.

According to the organization's social media account, the "anti-fascist" and "anti-imperial" group aims to feed and care for High Desert communities outside of "colonial systems of oppression." Their first food and clothing drive debuted last month with a successful turnout and a gracious number of donated items, organizers said.

Houselessness in the High Desert

The High Desert is no stranger to the unhoused. Victorville had the second highest homeless population in San Bernardino County in 2023, tallying to 607 houseless individuals.

There isn't one solution to fix the housing crisis but efforts in the High Desert have been temporary at best.

Operation Shelter Me linked 20 unhoused individuals in Barstow with assistance programs, only three of whom received follow-up services.

High Desert Homeless Services is struggling with funding and announced three months ago via Instagram that they were "temporarily pausing our services to the homeless so we can reopen BETTER THAN EVER." They are trying to bounce back with a newly announced temporary thrift store.

The Victorville Interim Homeless Shelter is no longer in operation .

The Victorville Wellness Center is the area's best resource for unhoused and struggling residents, but it is still in its beginning stages .

High Desert Free Market is an example of community members taking matters into their own hands. For more information on donating items, please message the group directly on Instagram @highdesertfreemarket.

Entire desert town goes on the market for staggeringly low sum

 • The entire town of Campo, California has been listed for $6.6 million
 • Made up of 28 buildings, the town needs to be desperately renovated

An entire town has been listed on the market for just $6.6 million - but comes with a raft of costs for the new owner.

Located just an hour outside of San Diego, California , the small town of Campo is being sold by Nick Hernandez and Joseph Barela with realtors Top Gun CRE.

Made up of 28 buildings, including a mix of residential and commercial buildings, the town is in desperate need of renovations. By buying the property, interested parties can also determine the direction they want the downtown area to go in.

Many of the residential units have been renovated for aesthetics and comfort, including new roofing and plank flooring.

Other vacant buildings hold the opportunities for new businesses, such as gyms, laundromats, daycares, or community centers.

Investors can focus on building more housing units on the available land without changing the existing buildings.

This could involve building apartments, townhouses, or other types of multi-unit dwellings.

An investor can also demolish and rebuild a significant part of the town for the sake of modernization, such as adding new housing options, commercial spaces, and improved infrastructure.

In an interview with local Fox affiliate KUSI , Barela said he has had a number of interested parties, such as famous movie producer (whose identity he didn't disclose) and professional skateboarder Tony Hawk.

The town was originally built during World War II to house soldiers in the event of an invasion. Campo currently houses 100 residents, all of which are renting from one owner, who is ready to sell the property.

'Border Patrol rents a commercial building there. I have got 6 other commercial tenants as well. There are 28 residential units spread out across 21 residential buildings,' said Barela.

Campo locals are not opposed to the potential new ownership of the town, as long as its charm is preserved in the process of redevelopment.

'It's pretty nice it's a lot quieter than in town,' said Campo local Michael Hoffner.

'You don't get the hustle and bustle, you get to sleep peacefully and you get to see the stars out here.'

'Love it down here, the surroundings and the wildlife,' said local Tony Martinez.
