Class 6 English Grammar Chapter 2 Parts of the Sentence

english grammar sample paper class 6

Class 6 English Grammar Chapter 2: Parts of the Sentence is given below. We know that a simple sentence has two main parts — Subject and Predicate. The Subject of the sentence is the word that does an action or about which something is said. The Predicate of the sentence consists of a number of words that express the action done by the Subject or say something else about the subject.

The Elements of a Sentence in English Grammar When diving into the realm of English grammar, especially for Class 6 students, understanding the fundamental building blocks of a sentence becomes paramount. Every simple sentence in English can be dissected into two primary components: the Subject and the Predicate. The Subject is pivotal in a sentence as it indicates who or what the statement is about. It is either the doer of an action or the entity about which an assertion is made. Recognizing the Subject can help readers ascertain the main focus of a statement and set the stage for further comprehension.

Class 6 English Grammar Chapter 2: Parts of the Sentence – Subject and Predicate is describe below for new academic session 2024-25.

The Role of the Subject in Structuring Sentences The beauty of English grammar lies in its organised structure. The Subject serves as the cornerstone of this structure. In essence, it acts as the primary noun or pronoun that either performs an action or becomes the topic of discussion in a sentence. For example, in the sentence “The cat sleeps”, ‘The cat’ is the Subject because it’s the entity performing the action of sleeping. Being able to identify the Subject empowers readers to quickly understand the core of any statement and connect further details with ease.

Understanding the Predicate: Beyond the Subject Following the Subject is the Predicate, the second integral part of any simple sentence. The Predicate expands upon the Subject, providing additional details, describing actions, or offering further commentary. It consists of a collection of words that either describe what the Subject is doing or add supplementary information about it.

Taking our earlier example, “The cat sleeps”, the word ‘sleeps’ is the Predicate as it tells us more about what ‘The cat’ (the Subject) is doing. Grasping the concept of the Predicate is essential for readers and writers alike, enabling richer, more informative communication.

Sometime a subject may be Gerund. In the following sentences, the bold words are subjects:

  • The guitar is a stringed instrument.
  • My house in on a lonely road.
  • Shimla is a hill station.
  • India is a peninsula.
  • Raw mango is used to make pickles.

In Imperative Sentences, the Subject is generally understood; as, Help the poor. = You help the poor. Get out of the class. = You get out of the class. Thank you. = I thank you. Welcome you. = We/I welcome you.

It, there, those, that, this, they, etc., can be used as subject.

Class 6 English Grammar Chapter 2 Extra Questions

What do you understand by subject in a sentance.

The subject is the doer of an action. It may be a single word or may have some words attached to it. The words attached to the Subject are— Determiner, Adjective and Adjective Phrase. These words are called Enlargement of the Subject.

What is Predicate in a sentence?

We know that the Predicate of a sentence states something about its Subject. It has a number of words that include 1. Verb, 2. Object, 3. Enlargement of the Object and 4. Complement if any. These words are called Extension of Predicate.

What is Subject in the sentence: The girls were sad?

In the sentence: The girls were sad, THE GIRLS is subject.

What is Predicate in the sentence: Priya started crying?

The Predicate in the sentence: Priya started crying is CRYING.

Division of the Predicate

As the subject is divided in to different parts, similarly the Predicate is also divided in to different parts.
