The research focus in the General Management track of the PhD Programme in Management (PMA) is on the strategies, structures, processes, and behaviors that affect the purpose and operations of organizations. Organizations shape and are shaped by the dynamics of in the global business environment, industries, technologies, and their different stakeholders.

In the PMA subprogramme on General Management , PhD students focus on how organizations can create and sustain competitive performance in a manner that accounts for the diverse needs of their different stakeholders as well as the environment and society at large. Under this broad umbrella, the overarching aim is to address through rigorous scientific research questions that have important implications for managerial practice.

The aim of the General Management track is to provide for the participants an in-depth understanding of the factors that influence the performance and sustained success of organizations. Research in the subprogramme encompasses (but is not limited to) research areas, such as, Boards and Governance, Corporate and Competitive Strategy, Strategy Processes and Strategic Decision-Making, International Business, Family Firms and Ownership, Organizational Leadership and Behavior, and Management of Stakeholders and Sustainability.

PhD students will become familiarized with existing theories of management research and the discipline's most important research areas, as well as, on the methodological front, with quantitative and qualitative research methods and formal modelling (surveys, interviews, experiments, panel analyses, event studies, discourse analyses, machine learning, and simulations).

Since organizations are no isolated entities but dynamically interrelated with industries, economies, cultures, and other environmental influences, they cannot be analyzed in isolation. Therefore, the subprogramme is characterized by an ontologically pluralistic approach to theory and methodological diversity. Interdisciplinary concepts will help address important research questions in a sound way. This provides PhD students with the necessary and relevant knowledge to make a valuable and novel contribution to the fields of strategy and management with "disciplined imagination" and a responsible attitude.

All focus-specific courses and seminars are offered in English; passive German language skills might be helpful in the general study context.

General information on Ph.D. studies

Graduate School

Ph.d. requirements.

  • Academics & Research
  • Programs & Requirements

Brown University awards more than 200 doctor of philosophy degrees annually.

The Brown Ph.D. is primarily a research degree. Teaching is an important part of many doctoral programs, and many departments require candidates for the Ph.D. to have teaching experience.

Brown University offers substantial financial support to doctoral students. All incoming doctoral students are guaranteed five years of support, which includes a stipend, full tuition remission, health-services fee, and a health-insurance subsidy. Doctoral students in the Humanities and Social Sciences are guaranteed six years of support. All promises of student support are subject to students making satisfactory academic progress, as determined by their programs of study. Please see related links for additional details regarding the University's commitment to doctoral education.

Ph.D. Funding

Funding guarantee, four general requirements for the doctor of philosophy.

The candidate must be formally admitted to his or her degree program.

The normal residency requirement is the equivalent of three Academic Years of full-time study beyond the bachelor's degree. Students who enter a PhD program at Brown already holding a master’s degree in a related field have a residency requirement equivalent to two Academic Years of full-time study upon entering the PhD program at Brown. Use of a previously earned master’s degree to reduce PhD residency requirements is contingent upon approval of the program Director of Graduate Study. Graduate work done at other institutions and not used in fulfillment of the requirements for any doctoral degree elsewhere may, on the approval of the program Director of Graduate Study, be counted in fulfillment of up to, but not exceeding, one year of the residency requirement. A student who desires credit for work done elsewhere should file a timely application with the program Director of Graduate Study; transfer credit forms are available through the  Office of the Registrar .

A student is advanced to candidacy for the Ph.D. when he or she has completed satisfactorily all the requirements, departmental and general, requisite to beginning work on the dissertation. Candidacy is determined by the department or program of study and certified by the Registrar. Most departments require a preliminary examination before advancing any student to candidacy. Most departments also require a final examination or defense. The examination is conducted by professors in the department and by such other members of the faculty as may be appointed.

The candidate must present a dissertation on a topic related to his or her area of specialization that presents the results of original research and gives evidence of excellent scholarship. The dissertation must be approved by the professor or committee under whose direction it is written and by the Graduate Council. All requirements for the Ph.D. must be completed within five years after advancement to candidacy.

Faculty Member Leaves Brown

If a faculty member working with a doctoral student leaves Brown for any reason before that student has completed his or her degree requirements, it may not always be possible for that faculty member to continue working with the student as an advisor. In such cases, departments will work with students to help them locate a new advisor.

Additional Requirements

Individual departments and programs may have additional requirements regarding the number of courses to be taken, proficiency in foreign languages, special examinations, and theses. The department should be consulted for specific information.

Alexandra Ledesma is a new graduate from the Construction Management program. An immigrant from Venezuela, she describes in her own words why she chose UH, and the professor that helped her achieve her best.

As an immigrant student originally from Venezuela, I would love to share my opinion after graduating from the University of Houston's M.S. Construction Management program, graduating with a 4.0 GPA while working two jobs and volunteering.

I was born and raised in the vibrant city of Maracaibo, Venezuela. My love for architecture blossomed when I went on a three month tour of Europe at 15.

My academic journey started at the University of Rafael Urdaneta, where I attained a Bachelor of Architecture at 19. My ambition led me to explore opportunities beyond my homeland, and I planned to pursue an Aeronautics graduate program in France.

However, fate took a different turn for me when I came to Houston. I was initially intending to visit my brother for a brief period, but I decided to stay after experiencing the city's vibrant atmosphere and abundant opportunities.

Immersing myself in the field of construction management through internships and academic pursuits, I discovered my calling – to contribute to community development through large-scale construction projects.

I began a graduate program in Construction Management at UH in February 2022. I embraced the opportunity to work alongside like-minded individuals, contributing my unique blend of architectural expertise and construction management skills to various teams working public construction projects.

What truly made my time at UH remarkable was the unwavering support and guidance I received from professors like Lu Gao , associate professor in the Construction Management Department. He brought a wealth of knowledge and passion to the classroom.

His commitment to student success and his ability to impart practical wisdom left an indelible mark on my educational journey. Through his mentorship and the collective efforts of all UH professors, I was equipped with the tools and inspiration to excel in my field and in school, graduating with 4.0 GPA.

My time at the university has not only shaped my professional path but has also instilled a deep sense of pride and belonging to the Cougar community. With gratitude for the opportunities I have been afforded and a renewed sense of purpose, I look forward to continuing my journey of contributing to the construction industry and making a positive difference in the world.

Thank you to my family always for the support! And to my fellow students, opportunity is always there. Just have faith in yourself, and pursue them.

As they look to move forward from the worst season in franchise history, the Detroit Pistons appear set to let a key executive go.

The Pistons are expected to part ways with general manager Troy Weaver, according to a Friday afternoon report from Shams Charania and James L. Edwards III of The Athletic . Weaver, 56, has served in that role since June 2020.

The move follows Detroit's reported hiring of New Orleans Pelicans general manager Trajan Langdon as their president of basketball operations.

During Weaver's four-season tenure, the Pistons never won more than 28% of their games. The team's last playoff berth came in 2019, and it hasn't won a playoff series since reaching the Eastern Conference finals in 2008.

Pistons coach Monty Williams remains in place despite a 14-68 first season that included a record 28-game losing streak.

Former Water District General Manager Pleads Guilty to Conspiracy to Commit Water Theft and Separate Tax Charge

FRESNO, Calif. — Dennis Falaschi, 78, of Aptos, pleaded guilty today to one count of conspiring to take federally owned water and one count of filing a false tax return, U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert announced.

According to court records, from 1992 through approximately April 2015, Falaschi was the general manager for a public water district in Fresno and Merced Counties (PWD) that sold water to farmers with over 38,000 acres of farmland. PWD obtained water that it sold by purchasing water from the federal government and collecting drainage water from farms. The federal water that PWD purchased came from the Delta-Mendota Canal (DMC), which is a federally owned canal operated by the United States Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Reclamation. PWD purchased federal water from the DMC pursuant to a contract that it entered into with the Bureau of Reclamation.

The federal water that PWD purchased from the DMC was fresh water that could be used for farming immediately. The drainage water that PWD collected from farms was high in salt content and toxins, and it needed to be blended down with fresh water before it could be reused.

Falaschi learned that water from the DMC was leaking from an old standpipe into a parallel canal in PWD. The parallel canal was owned by the then-president of PWD’s board of directors. PWD employees subsequently modified the old standpipe so that it would not leak and could be opened and closed. This allowed for water to be taken from the DMC on demand.

The amount of federal water that was illegally taken for which Falaschi was responsible was valued at over $1.5 million but under $3.5 million. Nearly all of that water was taken to blend down and reuse drainage water.

Moreover, according to court records, from 2011 through 2016, Falaschi entered into private water sales where he received payments. The water sold was legitimately sourced from outside PWD and was not federally owned water. Thereafter, in March 2016, Falaschi signed and filed an individual income tax return with the Internal Revenue Service where he did not report the income that he received from the private water sales.

This case is the product of an investigation by the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Office of Inspector General, the IRS Criminal Investigation, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Joseph Barton and Henry Carbajal III are prosecuting the case.

Falaschi is scheduled to be sentenced on Sept. 16, 2024, before U.S. District Judge Jennifer L. Thurston. Falaschi faces a maximum statutory penalty of five years in prison and $250,000 fine for the conspiracy to commit water theft and three years in prison and $100,000 fine for the tax charge. The actual sentence, however, will be determined at the discretion of the court after consideration of any applicable statutory factors and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, which take into account a number of variables.
