Sequence Graphic Organizer

Garinger S Togba

I’m still struggling with the chronological versus sequence. When a student summarizes a short story (in this case a fairy tale), is that summary chronological because the events happen in order from beginning to end? Or is it sequence?

As I define it, and other people use these terms differently, events that occur chronologically occur at a specific time. Whereas sequences or processes can occur at anytime. This is the difference between telling my friend about my trip to the mall (occurred at a specific time and is organized chronologically) and telling my friend how to get to the mall (could occur at anytime and is organized sequentially). I hope that this helps!

Writing Process Worksheets

Related ela standard: w.4.5.

When writing any work of significance, we follow a basic scheme referred to as the writing process. This process has a series of steps that help us plan what we are going to write and when we finish to work further on it to improve even further. The process begins without writing at all. The prewriting stage is where we brainstorm and get a good idea and foundation for what we are about to write. We then begin to follow this plan and write our work. From here it is all about improving the work. The revision stage is we move things around and add or remove things that don't just fit. At this point we have a draft that needs editing for grammatical and semantic integrity. After that we publish our work. The worksheets below will walk students through this process to begin a deep dive into it.

Writing Process Worksheets To Print:

Report Checklist - All the things that you need to do to write a solid report on a book or other body of work.

Your Report: Final Steps - A simplified version of the previous. Use the checklist below and the editing symbol chart your teacher gives you to help make improvements in your first draft.

Create a Story Map - A story map is a plan for a story that you want to write. It is a way to organize your ideas, and to make sure that your story has all the parts that it needs (like a beginning, a middle, and an end!) before you start writing. Brainstorming ideas for your story and organizing them makes the writing process easier, and makes it more likely that your readers will both be able to follow and will enjoy your story.

The Guitar - Find all 30 mistakes in this one. A little proofreading, but a lot of editing. The first one has been corrected. Find the rest and use editing marks to correct each one.

Knock it out of the Park! - This is a really neat way to organize your thoughts. Just like making a great play in an important game, writing a good report requires preparation, and a firm understanding of the rules of the game. Do a great job on your next report by following these simple steps.

The Writer at Work - Do you have an idea for a great story? Starting with an idea and brainstorming can be a great way to work out the details, and organizing all of your ideas can make the writing process easier. Use this template to help you organize the writing of a story.

Revising for Impact - Follow the prompts to revise each sentence so that it will have more impact for the reader.

The Revision Pyramid - Reviewing your own work is difficult at first. This is a core part of developing as a writer. On each line the base sentence, follow the directions to make the sentence more interesting and specific.

Revision Checklist - A reminder on how to edit your own work.

The Editor's Role - An editor does more than just correct mistakes; he or she can help to shape a manuscript by moving things around, and for suggesting ways to revise or develop it.

Kelly's Kitten - Part of revising your writing is to look and see where it can use more development.

Revising For Style - Style in writing means the way in which an author chooses to write, what words she uses, what tone she takes, etc.

Revising Your Writing - Take a story that you have written. Use the questions to determine what needs to be revised.

Mr. Miller - Mr. Miller bought a horse and everything changed. On each line below the base sentence, follow the directions to make the sentence more interesting and specific.

Writing With Purpose - When your research is completed, organizing your ideas before you start writing will make the writing process easier.

The Steps of the Writing Process

The complete full-fledged piece of text that you look at has a lot of hard work behind it. There are several steps that a writer has to follow in order to present complete writing in front of the audience. Here are steps of the writing process that are commonly used by many authors and writers:

Preview and Prewriting

The very first step of the writing process does not actually involve any writing. Instead, this step insists that you focus on the topic of your writing. You have to decide what you will be writing about. Once you have decided that, you will have to move further towards researching that topic. Researching includes collecting all the relevant details and information regarding the topic. You might have to travel or spend hours on the internet to get all the necessary information. This step also includes brainstorming different ideas. You take time out to think and take notes of what your final piece will look like. This step also includes the outlining of the essay beforehand.

Drafting is the process where you actually start to write. After you have collected all the relevant information, you connect it together in a way that makes sense. During this process, you start writing down the research you have collected and your own ideas without worrying about the final look. The purpose of the drafting process is to let you get in the mood of writing. At this point, there is no fuss about making errors and mistakes.

Revising and Editing

This is the process where you revise what you have written. This process includes the rereading of the final draft. You also look for errors during editing and make sure that the grammar, punctuations, and sentence structures are on point.
