A news report is similar to a news article. It is the basic facts of a story that is currently happening or that just happened. Writing a news report is easy if you report on the subject clearly, conduct good interviews, and write in a style that is clear, concise, and active.

Collecting Information for the Report

Step 1 Figure out what to write about.

  • Ask around for story ideas, especially government officials and public relations representatives. [1] X Research source
  • Scan the news to see what is already happening. This could lead to you finding other story ideas that are related.
  • Search your city or county's website or directory for local events that are coming up.
  • Attend city council meetings to find out if there are any local issues happening in your area.
  • Sit in on trials at the courthouse and see if anything interesting happens that you could report on.

Step 2 Go to the scene.

  • Write down everything you see and everything that takes place.
  • Record and take notes of any speeches that occur at events. Make sure to get the names of the speakers.

Writing the News Report

Step 1 Write a headline.

  • The headline should be attention grabbing, but not exaggerate or mislead.
  • Capitalize the first word of the headline and any proper nouns after that.
  • If you're having trouble coming up with a headline, you might try writing it last instead. It may be easier to think of a headline after you've finished your article.
  • For example, your headline might read: "Armed robbery at Portland farmer's market"

How to write a news article.

Whether it's local, national or international, writing articles on important events is a useful skill to learn. Where to begin when you're writing the news article?

First, you need some news. There has been a break in at this house. The only witnesses are the family.

The burglar has eaten their food and destroyed some furniture.

A good reporter will start by finding out the facts. What happened? When? Who was involved? Where? Why?

Once you have sorted all of your notes and organised the facts, you're ready to write the article.

Every good news article needs a headline. Something attention grabbing: 'Bears Blame Blonde For Burglary.'

Very nice. Everyone loves alliteration in a headline. The same letter or sound at the beginning of each word.

It then needs a subheading to provide a bit more detail about the story.

'Burglar steals porridge and destroys house in ransacking rampage.'

Your first paragraph should summarise and describe what happened as accurately as possible: 'In the early hours of this morning, a burglar broke into the home of the three bears in rural Bearwick. Police are looking for a blonde haired suspect.'

Use your notes to write additional paragraphs and give your reader more detail about what has happened.

You might want to add quotes from your witnesses, using quotation marks.

Printed newspapers have a traditional layout in columns like this.

If your news article is online, however, you won't need these.

But remember both need paragraphs and you should write in a formal way in the third person using pronouns like he, she, it or they.

A well written article will help those who know nothing about the event understand what happened.

Don't forget to add your name to the the article, but leave out your personal opinions. Stick to the facts. The what, when, who, where and why.

  • Never be too verbose. Your words do not have to be too complicated because, if you are indeed a news report writer, you should never ever make it as a medium for you to showcase your wide vocabulary or your excellent command of the English language. When writing news reports, you have to be direct without compromising the quality and the relevant information. You have to make sure that you have chosen your words and construct your sentences properly so you will be able you construct a news story that is concise and brief but still informative.
  • Maintain only less than 25 words when constructing your sentences and also make sure that you keep and contain only a single idea all throughout your sentence. Anything more will always be considered as too wordy and it will always be an extra effort to the readers of the general public.
  • Just use a simple subject-verb-object form. Do not complicate things. News just have to be simple.
  • Never use a lot of commas. Again, keep things simple. Break down unnecessary compound or complex sentences into different sets of sentences.
  • Do not repeat the same information in succeeding paragraphs. In each of the paragraph that you create, always introduce a new information that will aid or support the initial information mentioned in the preceding paragraph.
  • Having more than three prepositional phrases into a single sentence is never ideal.
  • Putting more than three numbers in a single sentence does not look good and convenient for the readers. If the numbers are important, you can have it on a tabular form or in a list form. This can help in making your news report convenient and comfortable to read.
  • Keep in mind that writing a news report is all about the people you are writing about and the people, the general public, you are writing for—it will never be about a written piece about you as a writer or writing for your personal interest. So this means that you should make sure that you have focused on one or more of the affected individuals.
  • When writing a news story, always make sure that you have an angle and a perfect angle at that. Make sure that the angle you have chosen gives an opportunity for all the sides of the story to be heard and not just one side or else you are considered as bias and your credibility will be questioned.
  • Do not be afraid to have an angle for the fear that you will be considered as biased. Keeping an angle to your new story is a standard technique and it is not necessarily bad since this highlights the purpose and the main focus of your news story.
  • Always keep it objective and, obviously, never subjective. Always be nonpartisan. As mentioned above, you just have to make sure that you have tried to cover all sides of the story and never just one or two. For example, there was a road accident wherein a car crashed into a motorcycle. Do not only take into account the statements of the driver of the car and the driver of the motorcycle—you also have to get the statement of the traffic enforcers, the police who responded to the incident, and yes, including the onlookers or the ones who were able to witness the incident.
  • Speaking of getting a statement, always make sure that you will be able to directly quote the people’s statement. Do not add anything just to make your story more interesting because you are not anymore writing a news story but you are already writing fiction. If you fear that you will not be able to catch on what your interviewee had said, make sure you record whatever he or she says.
  • Speaking of interviews, if it is a scheduled or planned, phone call or face-to-face interview, you have to make sure that you have asked permission that you will are to record your interview with that person as there are some countries who would consider recording any kind of conversation or interview as illegal.
  • You are writing a news story and not a feature story so this means that you should not get flowery when it comes to describing a newsworthy event. Just write what happened. Write it as it is and do not any more try writing in a heavily descriptive language as it is not really necessary.

Starter/baseline assessment

Pupils spend five minutes reviewing their pyramid plan, to remind themselves of the order of information in their reports, while also referring to their original news report plans for detailed information.

As a class, recap the structural and language features of news reporting. How will you begin your news report? Which information will you include in the middle section? How many quotes will you include? How will you end your report? What do you need to remember about using paragraphs in news reports?

Learning activity

Pupils write the first draft of their news reports, using the planning sheets which they created in previous lessons.

Give pupils deadlines throughout the session to replicate the newsroom experience. You may wish to split the sections of the report into separate tasks with a deadline for each one, eg: 5W introduction; quotes and reported speech from interviews; additional research on the topic; final paragraph.

Refer back to the class News report toolkit, as well as the Model news reports and News reporting language word banks from lesson 11 to support pupils to write in an authentic news report style and structure.

Pupils share their news reports with a partner, providing feedback to each other based upon the following questions: which language features have they included in their news report? Have they begun their news report with a 5 W introduction? Have they included  interesting  information? Have they started a new paragraph for every new point? Is the news report  balanced ? Do you think it is a  truthful  and  fair  report? Why?

Hearing stories about you from a professor or work supervisor helps law admissions officers build a three-dimensional picture of who you are and how you might contribute to the law school community.

This is why it is important to approach recommendation letters strategically, even though they’re just one part of your application process. 

Whom to Ask for a Recommendation Letter

Unless you are an older applicant who has been in the workforce for many years, you should get at least one law school recommendation letter from a professor. Others might come from other professors, mentors or supervisors from an internship, job or activity .

One mistake that applicants make is to request a recommendation letter from someone they think is a big shot – a well-known professor, a high-level executive or a family friend who is a venerable lawyer or local politician.

This is only a good idea if such a person teaches or works with you directly and can speak knowledgeably about your work and your goals. If your relationship is more indirect or distant, it can come across as superficial and uninformative, like a vague book blurb by a celebrity who seems unlikely to have read the book.

Above all, ensure the recommendation letter will be positive! If you detect signs that you have chosen the wrong reference to write a letter, move on to someone who can speak about your strengths more knowledgeably and enthusiastically. 

What a Recommendation Letter Should Include

If a recommendation letter is simply a series of compliments strung together, it will sound generic, no matter how effusive or truthful it is. An effective letter should back up its claims with specific details and examples of times when you stood out because of your dedication, helpfulness, initiative or insight.

A recommendation letter does not have to be unwaveringly positive. In fact, a letter that shows how you have grown, overcome adversity, responded constructively to feedback or taken responsibility for yourself can show the kinds of “ soft factors ” that law school admissions officers seek.  

How to Request a Recommendation Letter

Once you have identified a reference who is likely to write you a strong recommendation letter, ask him or her politely. Explain why you are applying to law school, why you think he or she would be a good reference and when you will need the letter.

Be prepared for the recommender to ask for your resume or other materials. For example, a professor might ask to see copies of your papers for the class, or any feedback received.

You might offer to provide more information or details as needed or to discuss the letter in a meeting or phone call. However, do not crowd your initial request with ideas and advice. That could come across as presumptuous.

If a recommender has a personal connection to a school you are applying to, consider requesting a school-specific letter , in addition to a more general recommendation letter.

Finally, avoid writing a recommendation letter yourself . If a recommender asks you to do so, gently explain why this is a bad idea and instead offer to provide ideas and notes that he or she could incorporate into his or her own letter. 

How Many Recommendation Letters to Request

Very few law schools require more than one recommendation letter. Many limit you to two, although some allow up to five.

It is important that all your recommendation letters are strong and substantive, because they may take time away from other aspects of your application. Quality matters more than quantity.

If you are worried that one of your letters is not as strong as the others, don’t submit it. A mediocre letter could very well overshadow better letters read alongside it. Just think about how often you read a mixed review that turns you off of a business, even if the other reviews seem positive. 

When to Request a Recommendation Letter

Recommendation letters are submitted and processed through the Credential Assembly Service of the Law School Admission Council. Since they can take a couple of weeks to process, it’s a good idea to get them in before you plan to apply.

Anticipate that your recommender may need at least a few weeks to write the letter, particularly at busy times of the year. That means that you should request recommendation letters more than a month before you plan to apply.

For applicants planning to apply in the fall, it is best to request letters over the summer or early fall. It’s OK to request letters earlier, as well. For example, if you just finished a summer internship where you worked together well with your boss, you might request the letter before leaving, even if you don’t plan to apply anytime soon. 

What if Your Recommendation Letter Is Delayed?

While law school admissions are rolling , a week or so of delay will not be of consequence. So, consider waiting until your application is complete before you submit it.

That said, if it is late in the cycle, or if you are aiming to meet an early decision deadline , waiting may not be an option. As long as you have the minimum number of recommendation letters required, your application can be submitted. You can always add further letters to your file later.

Remember that a law school is unlikely to review your application as soon as it is received. So, if a recommendation letter is delayed for a few days, it is unlikely to matter. If the letter is important and it may be delayed for some time, notify the admissions office by phone or email that another recommendation letter is forthcoming and ask if your application could be put on hold until it is received.

Of course, the best way to ensure that a recommendation letter does not hold up your application is to request it several weeks in advance. The law school admissions process is stressful enough without having to wait on other people!

Google Chrome emergency update fixes 6th zero-day exploited in 2024

Google has released emergency security updates for the Chrome browser to address a high-severity zero-day vulnerability tagged as exploited in attacks.

This fix comes only three days after Google addressed another zero-day vulnerability in Chrome, CVE-2024-4671 , caused by a use-after-free weakness in the Visuals component.

The latest bug is tracked as CVE-2024-4761. It is an out-of-bounds write problem impacting Chrome’s V8 JavaScript engine, which is responsible for executing JS code in the application.

Out-of-bounds write issues occur when a program is allowed to write data outside the specified array or buffer, potentially leading to unauthorized data access, arbitrary code execution, or program crashes.

“Google is aware that an exploit for CVE-2024-4761 exists in the wild,” reads the advisory .

The company fixed the security flaw with the release of 124.0.6367.207/.208 for Mac/Windows and 124.0.6367.207 for Linux. The updates will roll out to all users over the coming days/weeks.

For users of the ‘Extended Stable’ channel, fixes will be made available in version 124.0.6367.207 for Mac and Windows.

Chrome updates automatically when a security update is available, but users can confirm they’re running the latest version by going to Settings > About Chrome, letting the update finish, and then clicking on the ‘Relaunch’ button to apply it.

Sixth zero-day exploited in attacks

This latest Google Chrome vulnerability is the sixth zero-day bug discovered and fixed in the popular web browser since the start of the year.

The company notes that an anonymous researcher reported the flaw on May 9, 2024, but no further details have been disclosed at this time.

“Access to bug details and links may be kept restricted until a majority of users are updated with a fix. We will also retain restrictions if the bug exists in a third party library that other projects similarly depend on, but haven’t yet fixed,” Google said.

Chrome zero-day flaws fixed in 2024 so far include:

  • CVE-2024-0519 : A high-severity out-of-bounds memory access weakness within the Chrome V8 JavaScript engine, allowing remote attackers to exploit heap corruption via a specially crafted HTML page, leading to unauthorized access to sensitive information.
  • CVE-2024-2887 : A high-severity type confusion flaw in the WebAssembly (Wasm) standard. It could lead to remote code execution (RCE) exploits leveraging a crafted HTML page.
  • CVE-2024-2886 : A use-after-free vulnerability in the WebCodecs API used by web applications to encode and decode audio and video. Remote attackers exploited it to perform arbitrary reads and writes via crafted HTML pages, leading to remote code execution.
  • CVE-2024-3159 : A high-severity vulnerability caused by an out-of-bounds read in the Chrome V8 JavaScript engine. Remote attackers exploited this flaw using specially crafted HTML pages to access data beyond the allocated memory buffer, resulting in heap corruption that could be leveraged to extract sensitive information.
  • CVE-2024-4671 : A high-severity use-after-free flaw in the Visuals component that handles the rendering and display of content on the browser.

Bomb threat email to North Block, security officials conduct searches

New Delhi: A bomb threat has been received by the North Block, which houses the home ministry, according to an official of the Delhi Fire Service (DFS).  The threat was received through an email, according to the official.

The DFS official said a dog squad and bomb disposal and detection teams along with police and fire department personnel are conducting searches. The call to the DFS was made after an officer posted at the North Block received the bomb threat email, a police officer said. Searches are on and, as of now, nothing suspicious has been found, the officer said.
