KSU College of Computing and Software Engineering
Capstone Project Overview
The Kennesaw State College of Computing and Software Engineering has a long history of providing students with the necessary skill sets to succeed in industry. Students participate in deep learning experiences that enhance the knowledge they have gained in the classroom. The senior capstone project is the final chapter of this experience for our students since they typically complete the capstone experience during the final semester of their senior year. Students learn to work directly with a client, gather and refine requirements, work cohesively as a team, create an innovative solution or conduct research, manage a project to completion, and present the results to external stakeholders – just as they will be expected to do in their careers in industry.
The CCSE industry liaison, faculty, and administration work with our industry partners to solicit projects that will enrich the students’ experiences and work directly with the students in a project-based atmosphere.
There are many goals and benefits our industry partners achieve during a capstone experience, some of which are:
1. Brand awareness
2. Recruiting talent in an immersive experience
3. Research/Ideation
4. Funding external resources to create unique solutions/prototypes
Depending on the goals of scope of the project our industry partners wish to create, we will customize the agreement for the project.
Capstone projects consists of 3-5 student team members working for approximately 400-person hours over the course of 12 weeks. The project sponsor can decide if they wish to have more than one student team working on the project and mentors the students throughout the project. A faculty advisor and a CCSE project manager are assigned to each team. The faculty advisor supervises the students in their technical domain area , and the CCSE project manager assists the faculty advisor in monitoring team progress and helps coordinate regular team meetings with the project sponsor.
If you wish to find out more about sponsoring a capstone project, please contact our CCSE Industry Liaison, Dawn Tatum, at [email protected] or by phone at 470-578-3797. To submit a project proposal, please visit https://ccse.kennesaw.edu/partner-with-ccse/capstone-proposal.php

Capstone transforms from a junior class to a senior class
Capstone is changing from a senior class to a junior class starting the 2024-2025 school year.
Capstone is a class designed to help students prepare for college by completing assignments in class such as research papers, and a mentorship program.
In previous years, Capstone was every seniors’ seventh hour and was taught by their advisory teachers. Now, it will be incorporated into juniors’ schedules and will have one designated Capstone teacher.
“Application preparation and scholarships fit better in your junior year than your senior year, mainly because early admission is November 1 of senior year,” said vice principal Renee Cox. “If we start [Capstone] junior year, then you have more time to research colleges, scholarships, fix grades, and get credits up.”
Incoming seniors now won’t have a Capstone class. Instead, they will have a Capstone curriculum to complete in their advisory class. Advisory will be longer to accommodate for the curriculum and allow for students to still have work/study time.
The curriculum will be a smaller version of Capstone. Activities such as the mentorship program will not be included.
“[Seniors] will still be able to use that time and have support in applying for scholarships, applying to colleges, all the benefits that are offered in Capstone,” Cox said.
The advisory-capstone combination for seniors is a temporary fix—after next year, students who took Capstone their junior year will have a normal advisory class for their senior year.
For next year, instead of Capstone college visitors, the school plans to implement optional presentations during lunch. Then, juniors and seniors can hear from the colleges they want to.
Cox believes it will be better to open it up to all juniors and seniors as an option, instead of a requirement for seniors.
“You can go listen to who you want,” she says. “This way, we can expose more kids to colleges, and use [advisory] time to get work done.”

My Davidson | A Student Blog Pursuing a Senior Capstone in Studio Art and Digital Screen Media Studies
Claire Begalla '24
Recent graduate Claire Begalla ’24 reflects on the work done to complete two senior capstones and the ways her work tapped into all areas of her liberal arts education including anthropology, environmental studies, art, community-building and art history.
About the Author
Claire Begalla ’24 (she/they) is a double major in studio art and digital screen media studies from DeLand, Florida.
Since graduating from Davidson in fall 2023, Claire has worked as an advisory and appraisal assistant for an art consultancy and as a registrar intern at the Mint Museum in Charlotte, North Carolina. They now work as a full time Advisory and Appraisal Associate for the consultancy, Arcadia Art Consultancy , run by Davidson alum Kait Marley '13.
“Why Davidson? I fell in love with the trees on campus.”
Capstones at Davidson can look very different for all majors.
As a double major, I completed two senior capstone projects. For my studio art major, I exhibited my works at the Van Every / Smith Galleries. For my Digital and Screen Media Studies major, I created a visual ethnography on the herbalist community in Southern Appalachia.
Flipping through my final visual ethnography
Through the creation of a visual ethnography, I sought to demonstrate—both through words and material—how particular plants, and plant-human relationships, reflect the moral values of individual herbalists. My process involved photographing and interviewing herbalists, creating paper from kudzu, crafting a book cover from birch bark, cyanotyping my photographs, and binding them with kudzu fibers. The undertaking of this visual ethnography allowed me to tap into almost all areas of my liberal arts education at Davidson—anthropology, environmental science, bookmaking, printmaking, and art history.
Making paper from banana fibers (pre kudzu experimentation)
Arriving at the final project direction took months of interviews, conferences, and workshops. I finally came to the focus of my project after working with an herbalist/papermaker in Asheville over the summer before my last semester at Davidson. Though papermaking had long been an interest of mine, it was her dedication to exploring the intersection between plants and craft that compelled me to enroll in her workshop. Together, we crafted paper from kudzu vines. Kudzu is an abundant invasive species in the U.S. that is native in Japan and Southeast Asia. I was inspired to use the kudzu plant not only for its invasive nature, but also because of its abilities to be used for medicine.
Alyssa Sacora, a crafts person exploring plant-based mediums in the form of papermaking, book arts, basketry and natural dyes, with plant fibers
With our hands soaked in fermenting fibers, we spoke for hours together about plants, spirituality, and ways of being. These kinds of conversations were what I experienced throughout my interviews with herbalists and they provided a sense of connection that I had felt was missing in my solitary artist practice.
Joe Hollis at Mountain Gardens
Although my capstone project began with the intention to develop a digital resource, as I delved deeper into the world of herbalism, I wanted to mirror the intentional, tangible interactions that herbalists have with plants in my own work. To authentically depict the community I intended to showcase in my book, it became evident that fostering a direct, material connection to my creation was essential. This approach would allow me to craft a digital artifact that resonates more deeply with a broader audience. In a blend of traditional and modern mediums, the handmade book concludes with a QR code that leads readers to an accompanying website. This dual engagement ensures that viewers experience both the tangible and digital realms to fully grasp the essence of the project.
Doug and Todd Elliott at Medicine’s From the Earth Symposium
During the completion of my studio art major at Davidson, I found myself gravitating towards portraying the human form across various mediums— and as I continued through my work, I began to sense a void in the narratives accompanying these figures that I was creating. I realized that I was missing intimate interactions with others stemming from the solitary nature of my artistic process.
Claire Begalla’s Artist Talk at the Van Every/Smith Galleries
What I think visual artists forget a lot of the time is that we can be collaborative, we can work together to create something meaningful, and it's often more enriching when we work together. My “Digital and Screen Media Studies” capstone allowed me to do just that—I was able to work with an incredible community of herbalists and artists, which allowed my work to become so much more fulfilling than I had ever imagined it could be.

Hi, I'm Kovi Duchesne!
I'm a designer currently attending Kennesaw State University for Graphic Communication. I believe being a designer means prioritizing the client's vision first, despite whatever personal style I may have. I am a multi GDUSA award winner and caffeine addict. My passion is branding. There is something about creating an identity and a presence for a company that draws to me.
This passion for art stems from the fact that I was made by the creator of the universe and all its beauty. My aim is to emulate Him.
On my free days you can catch me reading a good Fantasy book or losing every ranked game in League of Legends.

Taking the time to listen to a client's needs, wants, and dreams and applauding their desire to make it all happen makes the time you spend together more valuable and enjoyable.
Some things about me: Beyond art, I love the outdoors- hammocking, running, hiking- anything really. I love reading. Oh, and I think bubbles are one of man's greatest creations. Also rocking chairs. Currently, I am obsessed with the music artist Yellow House, you should give them a listen. Griffin is a student employee in K-State Salina's Information Technology, or IT, department. According to his nominators, Griffin represents himself and the IT department well and treats anyone who comes into the office with respect. "He makes sure to interact with those around him with a great attitude," nominators said. "On top of soft skills, he also takes the time to learn hard skills well, even volunteering and requesting to be trained on things that don't necessarily fall into his responsibilities, so he's able to assist if needed." Jack Byrne, senior in professional pilot, Wichita , is this year's Outstanding Graduating Senior Award recipient. The recognition acknowledges the campus's strongest student leaders who have made outstanding contributions to student life during their K-State careers. Byrne is a resident assistant in Earhart Hall and a certified flight instructor for K-State Salina's flight program. According to nominators, Byrne's friendly attitude is contagious. "He genuinely gets to know his residents, aviation students and the campus community," nominators said. "He is respected by his peers, faculty and staff." Byrne also received the Dean of Students Outstanding Graduation Senior Award , which acknowledges the significant contributions of graduating seniors universitywide to student life during their K-State careers. K-State Salina is committed to recognizing the efforts and accomplishments of its students who provide important contributions to the campus. This recognition helps elevate the commitment, perseverance and passion for learning demonstrated by students. "It is important to honor the outstanding achievements of our students who work hard and excel in all facets of their education," said Kyle Chamberlin, assistant dean of the Division of Academic Success and Student Affairs. "We recognize Bryce's and Jack's exceptional efforts and celebrate their successes. Both students provide so many outstanding qualities to our campus and are developing into leaders who will thrive in their professional industries and the communities that they will call home after graduation."
