Title Page Setup

A title page is required for all APA Style papers. There are both student and professional versions of the title page. Students should use the student version of the title page unless their instructor or institution has requested they use the professional version. APA provides a student title page guide (PDF, 199KB) to assist students in creating their title pages.

The student title page includes the paper title, author names (the byline), author affiliation, course number and name for which the paper is being submitted, instructor name, assignment due date, and page number, as shown in this example.

Student papers do not include a running head unless requested by the instructor or institution.

Follow the guidelines described next to format each element of the student title page.

Paper title

Place the title three to four lines down from the top of the title page. Center it and type it in bold font. Capitalize of the title. Place the main title and any subtitle on separate double-spaced lines if desired. There is no maximum length for titles; however, keep titles focused and include key terms.

Author names

Place one double-spaced blank line between the paper title and the author names. Center author names on their own line. If there are two authors, use the word “and” between authors; if there are three or more authors, place a comma between author names and use the word “and” before the final author name.

Author affiliation

For a student paper, the affiliation is the institution where the student attends school. Include both the name of any department and the name of the college, university, or other institution, separated by a comma. Center the affiliation on the next double-spaced line after the author name(s).

Course number and name

Provide the course number as shown on instructional materials, followed by a colon and the course name. Center the course number and name on the next double-spaced line after the author affiliation.

Instructor name

Provide the name of the instructor for the course using the format shown on instructional materials. Center the instructor name on the next double-spaced line after the course number and name.

Provide the due date for the assignment. Center the due date on the next double-spaced line after the instructor name. Use the date format commonly used in your country.

Professional title page

The professional title page includes the paper title, author names (the byline), author affiliation(s), author note, running head, and page number, as shown in the following example.

Follow the guidelines described next to format each element of the professional title page.

Paper title

Place the title three to four lines down from the top of the title page. Center it and type it in bold font. Capitalize of the title. Place the main title and any subtitle on separate double-spaced lines if desired. There is no maximum length for titles; however, keep titles focused and include key terms.

Place one double-spaced blank line between the paper title and the author names. Center author names on their own line. For a professional paper, the affiliation is the institution at which the research was conducted. Include both the name of any department and the name of the college, university, or other institution, separated by a comma. Center the affiliation on the next double-spaced line after the author names; when there are multiple affiliations, center each affiliation on its own line.

Author note

Place the author note in the bottom half of the title page. Center and bold the label “Author Note.” Align the paragraphs of the author note to the left. For further information on the contents of the author note, see Section 2.7 of the .

The running head appears in all-capital letters in the page header of all pages, including the title page. Align the running head to the left margin. Do not use the label “Running head:” before the running head.

Note for dissertations: The order in which you list your committee members differs from the order on the title page of the thesis. All committee members (other than the chair or co-chairs) are listed in alphabetical order based on last name.

The title page (or cover page) of your thesis, dissertation, or research paper should contain all the key information about your document. It usually includes:

  • Dissertation or thesis title
  • The type of document (e.g., dissertation, research paper )
  • The department and institution
  • The degree program (e.g., Master of Arts)
  • The date of submission

It sometimes also includes your student number, your supervisor’s name, and your university’s logo.

A typical example of a thesis title page looks like this:

The title page of your thesis or dissertation should include your name, department, institution, degree program, and submission date.

The title page of your thesis or dissertation goes first, before all other content or lists that you may choose to include.

Usually, no title page is needed in an MLA paper . A header is generally included at the top of the first page instead. The exceptions are when:

  • Your instructor requires one, or
  • Your paper is a group project

In those cases, you should use a title page instead of a header, listing the same information but on a separate page.

A title page (also sometimes referred to as a cover page) is the first thing that your evaluator or any reader will see when they encounter your dissertation . It must contain important information that gives the reader an idea of what they are about to look at. Let’s spend some time deconstructing this. 

The format of the title page will differ to an extent, based on the journal of publication, university, and citation style used. But there are some common elements you’ll have to include, regardless of the style you’re using. These guidelines will remain the same regardless of what level you’re at — whether it’s a Master’s thesis or a PhD dissertation. 

What goes on a dissertation title page?

Academic writing is objective and direct, so your title too should be such. Focus on l etting the reader know what exactly they’re dealing with. Use keywords that highlight the scope, purpose, and methods used in your research. Here are some examples:

Author information and affiliation

Your title page should also shed light upon you as the researcher, your qualifications, and affiliations. You will be expected to specify the following details: 

  • Your name 
  • ID number 
  • Department and university you are affiliated with 
  • Date and year of submission
  • Programme under which you undertook the dissertation (MA, MSc, PhD, etc.)

Additional information on your dissertation title page 

While these are the primary elements of a dissertation title page, there are additional details you may have to include, based on what style guide your university has told you to follow. Expect to include details such as these: 

  • Your primary advisor’s name 
  • Type of article (Is this a dissertation or a thesis?)
  • Word count or total number of pages 
  • University logo 

Formatting your dissertation title page 

Refer to the prescribed style guide or the guidelines followed by your university when you format a title page. While there will be minor variations depending on the style, a title page typically looks like this: 

Your university will give you specific guidelines about where each element should be placed on the title page. They will also give you details about indentation, spacing, and margins. They may even give you guidelines about font, font sizes, and capitalization. 

Tips for a well-formatted title page

  • The title page should not be too wordy. An evaluator should be able to glean the essential information about your paper at a single glance. 
  • Make sure you space the title page well, or else it might look too cluttered or too empty. 
  • Formatting a title page often means dwelling on incredibly specific and tedious things like spacing and sentence casing, so ensure that you double-check with your supervisor about whether you have followed these guidelines thoroughly. 
  • Proofread the title page to ensure that you have spelled each word correctly and that each element is where it should be.

It is considered as an important component of a thesis as it gives the reader an initial impression of the document’s content and quality.

The typical contents of a title page in a thesis include:

  • The title of the thesis: It should be concise, informative, and accurately represent the main topic of the research.
  • Author’s name: This should be written in full and should be the same as it appears on official university records.
  • Degree program and department: This should specify the type of degree (e.g., Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctoral) and the field of study (e.g., Computer Science, Psychology, etc.).
  • University: The name of the university where the thesis is being submitted.
  • Date of submission : The month and year of submission of the thesis.
  • Other details that can be included on the title page include the name of the advisor, the name of the committee members, and any acknowledgments.

In terms of formatting, the title page should be centered horizontally and vertically on the page, with a consistent font size and style. The page margin for the title page should be at least 1 inch (2.54 cm) on all sides. Additionally, it is common practice to include the university logo or crest on the title page, and this should be placed appropriately.

Here’s an example of an abstract for a thesis:

Title: The Impact of Social Media on Mental Health among Adolescents

This study examines the impact of social media on mental health among adolescents. The research utilized a survey methodology and collected data from a sample of 500 adolescents aged between 13 and 18 years. Here’s an example of how an introduction in a thesis might look:

Introduction:

The prevalence of obesity has increased rapidly in recent decades, with more than one-third of adults in the United States being classified as obese. Obesity is associated with numerous adverse health outcomes, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and certain cancers. Despite significant efforts to address this issue, the rates of obesity continue to rise. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between lifestyle behaviors and obesity in young adults.

The study will be conducted using a mixed-methods approach, with both qualitative and quantitative data collection methods. The research objectives are to:

  • Examine the relationship between lifestyle behaviors and obesity in young adults.
  • Identify the key lifestyle factors that contribute to obesity in young adults.

A literature review is a critical analysis and evaluation of existing literature on a specific topic or research question. The literature review allows the researcher to identify gaps in the current research, highlight areas that need further exploration, and demonstrate the importance of their research question.

April 9, 2023:

A search on Google Scholar for “Effectiveness of Online Learning during the COVID-19 Pandemic” yielded 1,540 results. Upon reviewing the first few pages of results, it is evident that there is a significant amount of literature on the topic. A majority of the studies focus on the experiences and perspectives of students and educators during the transition to online learning due to the pandemic.

One recent study published in the Journal of Educational Technology & Society (Liu et al., 2023) found that students who were already familiar with online learning tools and platforms had an easier time adapting to online learning than those who were not. However, the study also found that students who were not familiar with online learning tools were able to adapt with proper support from their teachers and institutions.

Another study published in Computers & Education (Tang et al., 2023) compared the academic performance of students in online and traditional classroom settings during the pandemic. The study found that while there were no significant differences in the grades of students in the two settings, students in online classes reported higher levels of stress and lower levels of satisfaction with their learning experience.

Methodology in a thesis refers to the overall approach and systematic process that a researcher follows to collect and analyze data in order to answer their research question(s) or achieve their research objectives. It includes the research design, data collection methods, sampling techniques, data analysis procedures, and any other relevant procedures that the researcher uses to conduct their research.

For example, let’s consider a thesis on the impact of social media on mental health among teenagers. The methodology for this thesis might involve the following steps:

Research Design:

The researcher may choose to conduct a quantitative study using a survey questionnaire to collect data on social media usage and mental health among teenagers. Alternatively, they may conduct a qualitative study using focus group discussions or interviews to gain a deeper understanding of the experiences and perspectives of teenagers regarding social media and mental health.

Sampling Techniques:

The researcher may use random sampling to select a representative sample of teenagers from a specific geographic location or demographic group, or they may use purposive sampling to select participants who meet specific criteria such as age, gender, or mental health status.

Data Collection Methods:

Writing a conclusion for a thesis is an essential part of the overall writing process. The conclusion should summarize the main points of the thesis and provide a sense of closure to the reader. It is also an opportunity to reflect on the research process and offer suggestions for further study.

Here is an example of a conclusion for a thesis:

After an extensive analysis of the data collected, it is evident that the implementation of a new curriculum has had a significant impact on student achievement. The findings suggest that the new curriculum has improved student performance in all subject areas, and this improvement is particularly notable in math and science. The results of this study provide empirical evidence to support the notion that curriculum reform can positively impact student learning outcomes.

Here is an example of how you can format appendices in your thesis:

  • Title page: The appendix should have a separate title page that lists the title, author’s name, the date, and the document type (i.e., thesis or dissertation). The title page should be numbered as the first page of the appendix section.
  • Table of contents: If you have more than one appendix, you should include a separate table of contents that lists each appendix and its page number. The table of contents should come after the title page.

What's on the title page of your thesis?

Creating your own title page in word, what does an apa title page look like, a photo on your title page, the cover page and title page, what about that, curious about an example of a title page.

Every thesis has a cover page: the title page. This includes - how surprising! - the title of your thesis, your name, and various other details. Often, the title page looks more or less the same for many different theses. Read here what exactly your title page should contain and how to design it in alignment with the APA-style guidelines. 

You probably received instructions from your thesis supervisor about your thesis structure, and therefore about what should appear on your title page. This may vary from study program to study program. In general, you will see at least the following information on an APA title page (i.e. a title page fitting the APA style):

the title and subtitle of your thesis;

the type of document (undergraduate/master's thesis or report);

the submission date of your thesis;

your initials or first name and surname;

your student number, course name and educational institution;

the title, initials and surname of your first and second supervisor (including their position, if applicable).

Creating a title page for your thesis is not difficult. Word will get you started with several standard templates. If you go to 'Insert' via the menu bar at the top, you will see the option to insert a title page. 

Of course, you can also create your own title page if you don't want to be stuck with a standard template. Programs like InDesign, Photoshop or Canva (a free online version of Photoshop) are great options. Do check what your course expects from you before you start using all kinds of different colours and fonts.

Are you writing your thesis in APA style? If so, you will probably use the following structure for an APA title page:

Centre all text on the page.

Use double line spacing. 

Put the title about 3-4 blank lines down from the top of the page.

Make the title bold.

Capitalise all keywords of the title. These are all words that are not function words (prepositions, articles, conjunctions, etc.), except for the function word that may be at the front of the title. You will then get, for example, 'The Effect of Smoking on Your Health'.

Leave a line open under the title and put the author's name there, followed by your educational institute, followed by your supervisor's name, and lastly the submission date of your thesis underneath. Always leave a blank line between each of these.

Your thesis immediately stands out more if you include a photo or illustration on the front cover. Some programmes ask you not to use an image; other programmes are more liberal in this respect. It is important to first check how this works for your program before you start looking for images. 

For your title page, a high-resolution stock photo works best. You can then be sure that the image will not be grainy after printing or uploading. You can download free stock photos from various sites. For example, take a look at Pexels , Pixabay or Free Images .

Some courses have a guideline that requires a cover page as well as a title page. The cover page often contains the title and subtitle, your name, a picture or illustration and any additional information. The title page repeats the title and subtitle, and contains various other information such as the name of your supervisor.

Does your course require both a cover page and a title page? If so, ask your supervisor which information should appear on the cover page and which on the title page.

Requirements

  • All margins should be 1 inch and must be consistent on all sides of the page.
  • All font should be the same size and should be set to either 10 pt. or 12 pt.
  • Do not display a page number anywhere on the page.
  • Do not use boldface type on the title page.
  • Capitalize the title, BY, your name, and either THESIS (for master's thesis) or DISSERTATION (for doctoral dissertations).
  • Your name on your title page should match what appears in the University's system.
  • The text block beneath THESIS or DISSERTATION should appear as follows:
  • Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements
  • for the degree of <add earned degree> in <add major>
  • with a concentration in <add concentration>
  • with a minor in <add minor>
  • in the Graduate College of the
  • University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, <add year of degree conferral>
  • The major must fit entirely onto line 2 of the text block.
  • Most students will not include lines 3 or 4. There are very few campus-approved graduate concentrations and graduate minors. (The list of campus-approved graduate minors can be found  here .) If a concentration or minor cannot be verified by the University’s records, it will not be allowed on the title page.
  • The year in line 6 of the text block must be the year of the degree conferral period for which the student will deposit (e.g., if a student deposits in December 2015 for the May 2016 graduation period, the year in the text block should be 2016).
  • Master’s students will use the heading “Adviser:”, "Advisers:", or “Master’s Committee:”, depending on which is applicable or preferred.
  • Doctoral students will use the heading “Doctoral Committee:” to list the final examination committee.
  • For committees, the committee chair should be listed first, and the director of research (adviser) should be listed second; all other committee members may be listed in the order preferred by the student or the student’s adviser.
  • The committee chair should be indicated by adding a comma and the word “Chair” after the chair’s name. The director of research (if different from chair) should be indicated by adding a comma and the phrase “Director of Research” after the director’s name.
  • “Co-Chair” and “Co-Director of Research” designations may be used when applicable.
  • Faculty members should be listed with their professorial title (i.e., Professor, Associate Professor, Assistant Professor, etc.). The professorial title should be spelled in full (do not abbreviate) and listed before the faculty member’s name.
  • Affiliations should be listed only for committee members who are not University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign faculty (i.e., departmental affiliations should not be listed).

The APA style version of the dissertation title page includes the following details:

The title should be capitalized and should appear just above the mid-section of the page. After the title, indicate:

  • Student number
  • Course code

Dissertation Title Page

The title page of your dissertation or thesis conveys all the essential details about your project, including:

  • The title of your project
  • Your full name (including student number if required)
  • Clarification of whether this is a dissertation or thesis document
  • The name of your academic department
  • The name of your university
  • The degree name that the dissertation or thesis has been written for (e.g. Doctor of Philosophy)
  • The date (month and year) that you will submit the document
  • The name of your supervisor(s)

This page can also be referred to as the dissertation cover page when your degree program is at the undergraduate or Masters level.

Format of the Title Page

Your university will provide you with the exact formatting requirements of your dissertation title page. This will include how to present the above information but also the font size to use, line spacing and the size of margins. For example, a graduate school may require the title to be in all caps, all text to be double-spaced and margins on the binding side to be 4cm. Don’t include the page number and have all text centred. You may also need to include the university logo. The APA style is commonly referred to for guidance on how to format research documents. Example of a Dissertation Title Page

The example below is what a dissertation title page would usually look like for a Masters degree project in the UK. You can use this as a template when writing your own title page. The format presented here is also applicable for a doctoral dissertation or thesis title page.

The title page may be followed by an approval page, signed by the project chair and any other committee members. After this comes your abstract, presented on a separate page and then your table of contents. Some institutions may also require a copyright page to be included. Whilst the title page doesn’t have a page number, pages after this may use Roman numerals with the traditional page number format starting after your table of contents.

The term partial fulfillment means that this research document was one of several requirements for you to obtain your degree. For a Master’s degree, the other requirements will typically include exams and coursework.

Follow the advice in this guide to ensure your title page is in the correct format before final submission of your research project. This will be a normal part of undergraduate and graduate study.

The title page of a dissertation (also called dissertation cover page) is what an evaluator or a reader looks at first in your dissertation. It forms their first impression of your dissertation. The dissertation title page contains all the relevant information about a dissertation. The look of the title pages may vary from university to university, but they generally follow certain common elements. Let’s look at what a dissertation title page should have in this article.

What to include in a dissertation title page?

The title page or cover page of your dissertation may form the first impression upon the reader, but the catch is going to be the title of your dissertation. The importance of the title of your dissertation cannot be stressed enough. You could write one of the most original and thought-provoking dissertations, but a vague title that doesn’t do justice to it could undermine its whole scope.

The title of your dissertation should clearly indicate to the reader what to expect. It should have the following qualities:

  • It should be clear and objective. It should not be too confusing and should be indicative of rigorous and direct academic language.
  • It could even be creative as long as it contains a subtitle that explains it. Subtitles are often an integral part of most dissertations as they provide more room to explain what your dissertation is about.
  • Use of keywords highlighting the core arguments, scope, or the purpose of your dissertation.
  • Your dissertation title should not be too lengthy or too short.

A reader (or your evaluator) would be satisfied if the following questions are answered by your dissertation title:

Does it highlight the purpose or goal of the study?

Is the context clear from the title, does it indicate or hint at the outcome of the study or is it open-ended, is the research strategy mentioned clearly.

Here is an example of one of the popular dissertation titles in English:

The Influences of the Holy Bible on Milton: A detailed analysis of Paradise Lost and redemption poetry in the 17 th  century.

As you can see, all the above-mentioned 4 points are answered in this dissertation title. This title clearly indicates that the biblical influence on Milton’s poetry is the goal of the study. The context as the title says lies with redemption poetry and Paradise Lost . The outcome would indicate the influence of the Holy Bible on Milton as a poet. Moreover, the research strategy can be gathered from the “detailed analysis” part, which tells us that it is an analytical dissertation.

  • Capitalize the first letters of the title and the subtitles.
  • The title should ideally be 12 words in length.
  • The first-page number should generally appear at the top-right corner of the page.
  • The font size should be Times New Roman, with the size 12 pt., and should be double spaced.
  • Articles, propositions, and other words having less than three letters should not be capitalized (e.g., “and,” “of” and “the” are not capitalized in the dissertation titles.
  • Double quotation marks are used.
  • Numbers below 10 are spelled out. Numerical is used when the numbers are above 10.In hyphenated compounds, the first letters of both components are capitalized.

b) AMA Dissertation Title Page

  • In AMA, the title, author name(s), institution name, abstract, and keywords are placed in the center alignment of the upper half of the page.
  • Doubling spacing is to be followed and any content on the page should not be bold or italicized.
  • Author’s first name to be followed by the last name after the title.
  • Page number starts at 1 on the title page, in the upper right-hand corner.
  • Font style should be either Times New Roman or Serif Type.
  • First letters of the title and subtitle should be capitalized.
  • Articles, propositions, and conjunctions are not capitalized

Q1. do i need to add the page number to the title page.

This totally depends on the formatting requirements of your university. If your dissertation follows APA and AMA style guides, it is prescribed that you number the title page as the first page of your dissertation. The page number is usually put on the top right corner of the title page.

Q2 . Can I put a picture on the title page?

Mostly, for dissertations , pictures are not added to the title page. It is always a good idea to keep your title page simple and clear so that it doesn’t confuse your reader at the first glance. That being said, if you feel a picture is reflective of your entire dissertation or thesis or adds on to the title, then you can always seek permission from your university before doing this.

Q3. Do I need to list committee members on the title page?

You don’t have to list the committee members on the title page unless the university has particularly asked you to do that. You can check the formatting requirements of the university style guide before making a decision.

Q 4. Is a copyright section necessary on the title page?

No. It is generally assumed that the dissertation is the intellectual property of the author. You only have to worry about this if you plan to publish your dissertation for a wider audience, otherwise, it is completely fine. However, sometimes certain universities ask their students to have a copyrights page in a different page than the title page.

The title page or the cover page is an important part of your dissertation . It is the first page anyone chancing upon your dissertation notices.  Therefore, your title page needs to look perfect. You should also ensure that the title page is formatted well and fits in with the rest of your dissertation. Many universities specify the formatting requirements for the same and if those are not mentioned, you could always follow the general rules most dissertations follow as we have outlined above. Thesis Title: Examples and Suggestions from a PhD Grad

When you’re faced with writing up a thesis, choosing a title can often fall to the bottom of the priority list. After all, it’s only a few words. How hard can it be?!

In the grand scheme of things I agree that picking your thesis title shouldn’t warrant that much thought, however my own choice is one of the few regrets I have from my PhD . I therefore think there is value in spending some time considering the options available.

In this post I’ll guide you through how to write your own thesis title and share real-world examples. Although my focus is on the PhD thesis, I’ve also included plenty of thesis title examples for bachelor’s and master’s research projects too.

Hopefully by the end of the post you’ll feel ready to start crafting your own!

Why your thesis title is at least somewhat important

It sounds obvious but your thesis title is the first, and often only, interaction people will have with your thesis. For instance, hiring managers for jobs that you may wish to apply for in the future. Therefore you want to give a good sense of what your research involved from the title.

Many people will list the title of their thesis on their CV, at least for a while after graduating. All of the example titles I’ve shared below came from my repository of academic CVs . I’d say roughly 30% of all the academics on that page list their thesis title, which includes academics all the way up to full professor.

Your thesis title could therefore feature on your CV for your whole career, so it is probably worth a bit of thought!

My suggestions for choosing a good thesis title

  • Make it descriptive of the research so it’s immediately obvious what it is about! Most universities will publish student theses online ( here’s mine! ) and they’re indexed so can be found via Google Scholar etc. Therefore give your thesis a descriptive title so that interested researchers can find it in the future.
  • Don’t get lost in the detail . You want a descriptive title but avoid overly lengthy descriptions of experiments. Unless a certain analytical technique etc was central to your research, I’d suggest by default* to avoid having it in your title. Including certain techniques will make your title, and therefore research, look overly dated, which isn’t ideal for potential job applications after you graduate.
  • The title should tie together the chapters of your thesis. A well-phrased title can do a good job of summarising the overall story of your thesis. Think about each of your research chapters and ensure that the title makes sense for each of them.
  • Be strategic . Certain parts of your work you want to emphasise? Consider making them more prominent in your title. For instance, if you know you want to pivot to a slightly different research area or career path after your PhD, there may be alternative phrasings which describe your work just as well but could be better understood by those in the field you’re moving into. I utilised this a bit in my own title which we’ll come onto shortly.
  • Do your own thing. Having just laid out some suggestions, do make sure you’re personally happy with the title. You get a lot of freedom to choose your title, so use it however you fancy. For example, I’ve known people to use puns in their title, so if that’s what you’re into don’t feel overly constrained.

*This doesn’t always hold true and certainly don’t take my advice if 1) listing something in your title could be a strategic move 2) you love the technique so much that you’re desperate to include it!

Why I regret my own choice of PhD thesis title

I should say from the outset that I assembled my thesis in quite a short space of time compared to most people. So I didn’t really spend particularly long on any one section, including the title.

However, my main supervisor even spelled out for me that once the title was submitted to the university it would be permanent. In other words: think wisely about your title.

What I started with

Initially I drafted the title as something like: Three dimensional correlative imaging for cartilage regeneration . Which I thought was nice, catchy and descriptive.

I decided to go for “correlative imaging” because, not only did it describe the experiments well, but it also sounded kind of technical and fitting of a potential pivot into AI. I’m pleased with that bit of the title.

What I ended up with

Before submitting the title to the university (required ahead of the viva), I asked my supervisors for their thoughts.

One of my well intentioned supervisors suggested that, given that my project didn’t involve verifying regenerative quality, I probably shouldn’t state cartilage regeneration . Instead, they suggested, I should state what I was experimenting on (the materials) rather than the overall goal of the research (aid cartilage regeneration efforts).

With this advice I dialled back my choice of wording and the thesis title I went with was:

Three dimensional correlative imaging for measurement of strain in cartilage and cartilage replacement materials

Reading it back now I’m reminder about how less I like it than my initial idea!

I put up basically no resistance to the supervisor’s choice, even though the title sounds so much more boring in my opinion. I just didn’t think much of it at the time. Furthermore, most of my PhD was actually in a technique which is four dimensional (looking at a series of 3D scans over time, hence 4D) which would have sounded way more sciency and fitting of a PhD.

What I wish I’d gone with

Does the thesis title really matter?

In all honesty, your choice of thesis title isn’t that important. If you come to regret it, as I do, it’s not the end of the world. There are much more important things in life to worry about.

If you decide at a later stage that you don’t like it you can always describe it in a way that you prefer. For instance, in my CV I describe my PhD as I’d have liked the title to be. I make no claim that it’s actually the title so consider it a bit of creative license.

Given that as your career progresses you may not even refer back to your thesis much, it’s really not worth stressing over. However, if you’re yet to finalise your thesis title I do still think it is worth a bit of thought and hopefully this article has provided some insights into how to choose a good thesis title.

My advice for developing a thesis title

  • Draft the title early. Drafting it early can help give clarity for the overall message of your research. For instance, while you’re assembling the rest of your thesis you can check that the title encompasses the research chapters you’re included, and likewise that the research experiments you’re including fall within what the title describes. Drafting it early also gives more time you to think it over. As with everything: having a first draft is really important to iterate on.
  • Look at some example titles . Such as those featured above!
  • If you’re not sure about your title, ask a few other people what they think . But remember that you have the final say!

§ 35.205 Effect of noncompliance that has a minimal impact on access.

A public entity that is not in full compliance with the requirements of § 35.200(b) will be deemed to have met the requirements of § 35.200 in the limited circumstance in which the public entity can demonstrate that the noncompliance has such a minimal impact on access that it would not affect the ability of individuals with disabilities to use the public entity's web content or mobile app to do any of the following in a manner that provides substantially equivalent timeliness, privacy, independence, and ease of use:

Tennessee defeated Texas A&M 6-5 in the Men’s College World Series championship series winner-take-all game to capture the team’s first national championship in school history. The Volunteers with its 60th win became the first college baseball team to reach that mark since Wichita State won the title in 1989.

It didn’t take long for Tennessee to get on the board with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the first from Christian Moore. The Aggies boasted one of the best pitching staffs this season, but it was the Tennessee pitchers that put on a dominant showing the majority of the night that made it a frustrating night for Texas A&M. A seventh inning filled with highlight plays proved to be much-needed insurance to hold off a late rally.

With the victory, the Volunteers also broke the No. 1 overall seed curse, becoming the first team Miami (Fla.) in 1999 to win the national championship as the top ranked team in the tournament. The national championship was 127 years in the making, ending a long title drought since Tennessee began playing baseball in 1897. The reached the championship round in 1951 but lost to Oklahoma.

It’s also another milestone of SEC domination in the sport. The conference has captured its fifth championship in a row with five different schools winning the College World Series dating back to 2019.

Texas A&M scores in ninth but falls short

Texas A&M is down to its final inning, but it added another score. Gavin Grahovac hit a leadoff double and two batters later, Jackson Appel brought him in to make it a 6-4 game with one out. They added another run on a wild pitch, but Aaron Combs struck out Ted Burton to end the game.

Kirby Connell ends eighth inning with strikeouts

Kirby Connell has been sensation for Tennessee, and he put an end to the Texas A&M scoring threat in the eighth inning with big-time strikeouts.

Connell struck out Kaeden Kent and Ryan Targac swinging and was pumped to end the frame as Tennessee it three outs away from a national championship with a 6-3 lead.

Texas A&M adds runs to cut deficit

A three-run seventh inning looked to be the nail in the coffin for a Tennessee victory, however Texas A&M is chipping away and making it a ballgame late.

Jackson Appel opened up the inning with a single and ended up advancing to third thanks to wild pitches from Dylan Loy. Hayden Schott then made solid contact for a single to bring in Appel, and two batters later, Caden Sorrell hit a double to left center and Schott turned on the jets to make it from first base to home to add another run. That be enough for Tony Vitello, opting to put in Kirby Connell in hopes of ending the threat.

Hunter Ensley avoids out at home to score on miraculous play

How did Hunter Ensley not get tagged out?

Tennessee outfielder Kavares Tears hit a double off the centerfield wall and Ensley boldly decided to go from first to home. The throw got to Texas A&M catcher Jackson Appel early and it looked to be an easy tag out at home. But Ensley maneuvered around the tag and his left hand touched home plate to score an incredible run and push the Volunteers ahead 6-1 heading to the eighth inning.

Tennessee has done a lot of its damage on the night with two outs. Four runs have been scored with two outs and the team is 8-for-14 in the situation.

Tennessee's Dylan Drieling hits massive home run

There's still two innings left, but Dylan Dreiling has moved Tennessee closer to its first baseball title.

Texas A&M ace reliever Evan Aschenbeck retired the first two batters in the bottom of the seventh before Billy Amick kept the Volunteers alive with a single. Dreiling hit a high-flying ball to the sky. It wasn't clear if the ball was gonna clear the fence, but right fielder Casey Sorrell ran out of room in trying to make a leaping catch. The two-run homer made it a 5-1 game.

Texas A&M can't capitalize with RISP

There isn't much time left, and Texas A&M missed a golden opportunity to cut the deficit or take the lead.

The Aggies had Kaeden Kent and pinch runner Ryan Targac on base with the top of the lineup on deck in the seventh inning. Gavin Grahovac just missed out on a massive hit with a deep fly out to right field. Jace Laviolette looked like he had a hit get passed first baseman Blake Burke, but Christian Moore was perfectly positioned to get the ball, get the throw to first and prevent the run from scoring.

Texas A&M is now 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position on the night.

Texas A&M brings in Evan Aschenbeck

Texas A&M needs to prevent Tennessee from extending the lead, and it's turning to the Division I ERA leader to assure that.

The Aggies brought in Evan Aschenbeck in the sixth inning and he is likely to go the distance in hopes the offense is able to come through late. Aschenbeck led the country with a 1.39 ERA.

Zander Sechrist was sensational on Monday, but the Aggies were able to get him out of the game thanks to a pair of singles from Jackson Appel and Hayden Schott. Tennessee turned to closer Nate Snead to get out of the jam, and it worked, capped off with a spectacular catch by Blake Burke on a lineout.

Zander Sechrist has been a star for Tennessee this postseason, and he very well could be the reason why the Volunteers are national champions. He struck out Kaeden Kent, Travis Chestnut and Gavin Grahovac in the fifth inning. He now has six strikeouts on the night and allowed one run on four hits.

He doesn't appear to be slowing down, but head coach Tony Vitello said his team is getting close to going to the bullpen.

Tennessee back in front with pair of runs

The tie game didn't last long after Tennessee responded to Texas A&M's first run with scores of their own in the third inning to retake the lead 3-1.

Leading off, Blake Burke showed off the power with a double to right centerfield to start the bottom of the third inning. He moved to third base after Billy Amick grounded out, and Dylan Dreiling hit a ball to deep center field that gave Burke plenty of time to tag and score. The Volunteers weren't done in the inning with back-to-back hits from Hunter Ensley and Kavares Tears, leading to Texas A&M taking out starter Justin Lamkin for Josh Stewart.

The Volunteers weren't done scoring yet. Dean Curley welcomed Stewart with a single to bring in Ensley. However, Curley got caught trying to extend the single to second base and was tagged out to end the inning.

Bunt leads to Texas A&M score

Small ball leads to a tie game.

Travis Chestnut’s decision to bunt proved to be effective as he eventually went around the bases to score and tie the game at 1-1 in the third inning.

Chestnut’s bunt was placed perfectly in front of home plate, and Tennessee catcher Cal Stark tried to get the runner out at first when it didn’t look like he had a play. It resulted in an erratic throw that let Chestnut get to second, and a few pitches later, he stole third base to put himself in prime scoring position. Gavin Grahovac capitalized with a single to left field to bring Chestnut in for the first run of the game for the Aggies. 

Another mistake from Tennessee led to Texas A&M getting two runners on base, but the Volunteers caught a break with a double play to end the inning.

Pitchers put up scoreless second inning

Tennessee and Texas A&M both got a batter on base in the second inning, but neither side was able to do much with it in a scoreless second frame.

Justin Lamkin gave up the leadoff home run in the bottom of the first and allowed a couple of runners on base afterward, but he appeared more composed in the second inning, allowing only a walk that was aided by a pitch clock violation. On the other side, Zander Sechrist is off to another promising start with two early strikeouts and one hit allowed.

Some of the top people from Knoxville are in attendance to root for Tennessee to win its first baseball national championship. Inside Charles Schwab Field is Volunteers icon Peyton Manning, football coach Josh Heupel and men’s basketball coach Rick Barnes. Also joining them was country music singer Morgan Wallen, a Tennessee native who was a notable baseball player in high school before an injury sent him a different direction.

After Zander Sechrist had a 1-2-3 inning, the Volunteers got on the board quickly thanks to Christian Moore. The second baseman got perfect contact on the bat and sent the ball over the wall for a leadoff home run to give the Volunteers the early lead. It was Moore's 34th home run of the year, third-most in Division I.

The Volunteers will go with Zander Sechrist on the mound to start Game 3. The left-handed senior from Buford, Georgia is 5-1 with a 3.22 ERA and 17 starts this season.

Sechrist is coming off one of his best performances with Tennessee when he was the starter in the national semifinal matchup with Florida State. He tied a career-high 6.1 innings pitched with just two runs allowed on five hits in a 7-2 win over the Seminoles. He's been on fire in the postseason; in three NCAA Tournament games this year, he has pitched 17.1 innings and has allowed only two earned runs on 15 hits with 12 strikeouts.

Justin Lamkin will get the start for Texas A&M in the championship game. The sophomore is 3-2 season with a 5.00 ERA and 15 starts in 2024.

Although the ERA seems high, Lamkin has been excellent for the Aggies in Omaha. He pitched in both wins over Florida, including the one to send Texas A&M to the championship series, when he struck out nine Gators and gave up no runs. In eight innings in Omaha, Lamkin has 15 strikeouts and given up four hits.

As we look ahead to tonight’s decisive game, there are positive cases to be made for both Tennessee and Texas A&M to emerge victorious. The Aggies, despite missing out on the opportunity to clinch, came out of game two with its pitching staff in relatively good shape. A&M coach Jim Schlossnagle was able to keep bullpen ace Evan Aschenbeck in reserve after he successfully closed out game one, and one definitely likes the Aggies’ chances if they can get the ball to him with the lead in the late innings. That could be easier said than done, however, as A&M’s big bats have been largely silent outside of the big second inning on Saturday.

This brings us to the case for Tennessee, which has already gotten one solid start out of Xander Sechrist in Omaha, and coach Tony Vitello will be counting on him to deliver another. The more urgent issue for the Volunteers has been their inability to take advantage of a slew of baserunners, stranding a hefty 19 over the first two games.

One has to think, however, that if the Aggies continue to give the Vols’ big hitters chances, they’ll eventually deliver. While the concept of momentum in sports is nebulous and often fleeting, right now it’s on Tennessee’s side. It will likely be close, but we’ll take the healthier Volunteers to claim the crown. -- Eddie Timanus

  • How the Aggies can get the lead will depend on their hitting.   Jace LaViolette  and Gavin Grahovac topped 20 home runs with Grahovac providing the only run Sunday with a long ball. Kaeden Kent , son of former major leaguer Jeff Kent, is providing the hottest bat. Pressed into action due to a season-ending injury to Braden Montgomery, Kent has hit .450 provided a home run and 7 RBI in Omaha.
  • The Aggies will turn to Justin Lampkin to start Game 3 with the sophomore hoping to continue his success after throwing scoreless eight innings across two outings against Florida at the CWS. Waiting to pick up the baton is ace reliever Evan Achenbeck , who leads the nation in ERA. He'll be rested after two spotless innings Friday and could be summoned well before that if the Aggies have the early lead.

  • Zander Sechrist gets the ball for the Volunteers in Game 3. The senior lefty is second on the staff with a 3.22 ERA after two clutch starts in the postseason - a win against Evansville in their decisive super regional game and a strong effort against a powerful Florida State lineup that sent Tennessee to the championship series. Nate Sneed notched his sixth save in Sunday's win and could be called on again.
  • Where the Tennessee offense gets its offense from is anybody's guess. With a lineup that boasts five players that reached 20 home runs, there's danger everywhere. One of sports’ most storied franchises is about to be up for grabs.

In a statement released on Monday, the Celtics — fresh off their NBA-record 18th championship — announced the managing board of the ownership group expects to sell the majority interest of the team in 2024 or early 2025.

“The controlling family of the ownership group, after considerable thought and internal discussion, has decided to sell the team for estate and family planning considerations,” the statement said.

Wyc Grousbeck, who pioneered an investment group that bought the Celtics for $360 million back in 2002, is expected to remain the franchise’s NBA governor until the sale is complete.

The balance of shares would close in 2028.

Prior to the news, there was no indication that the Worcester native wanted to move on, especially as he has been a lifelong Celtics fan.

“It feels like we’ve got more to do,” he told reporters at the Celtics’ championship parade after Boston defeated the Dallas Mavericks in Game 5 of the NBA Finals on June 17.

“I mean, I’ve got to go design a ring with the guys, and we’ve got to raise the banner in October. There’s more to do. But we’re going to build the team for next year. We’re going to enjoy this for now, though.”

Grousbeck even added: “We’re fans who bought this team. We’re all in this together. Let’s go get another one.”

However, The Boston Globe reported on X that “this potential sale is not expected to include the entire investment group that purchased the team in 2002.”

In 2023, Forbes estimated the franchise to be worth $4.7 billion.

But the cost to purchase the team is unclear if it will only be Grousbeck’s shares.

The 63-year-old was also a part of the 2008 Celtics championship team, which included stars Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen.

In qualitative research , results and discussion are sometimes combined. But in quantitative research , it’s considered important to separate the objective results from your interpretation of them.

Results are usually written in the past tense , because they are describing the outcome of completed actions.

The results chapter of a thesis or dissertation presents your research results concisely and objectively.

In quantitative research , for each question or hypothesis , state:

  • The type of analysis used
  • Relevant results in the form of descriptive and inferential statistics
  • Whether or not the alternative hypothesis was supported

In qualitative research , for each question or theme, describe:

  • Recurring patterns
  • Significant or representative individual responses
  • Relevant quotations from the data

Don’t interpret or speculate in the results chapter.

To automatically insert a table of contents in Microsoft Word, follow these steps:

  • Apply heading styles throughout the document.
  • In the references section in the ribbon, locate the Table of Contents group.
  • Click the arrow next to the Table of Contents icon and select Custom Table of Contents.
  • Select which levels of headings you would like to include in the table of contents.

Make sure to update your table of contents if you move text or change headings. To update, simply right click and select Update Field.

All level 1 and 2 headings should be included in your table of contents . That means the titles of your chapters and the main sections within them.

The contents should also include all appendices and the lists of tables and figures, if applicable, as well as your reference list .

Do not include the acknowledgements or abstract in the table of contents.

The abstract appears on its own page in the thesis or dissertation , after the title page and acknowledgements but before the table of contents .

An abstract for a thesis or dissertation is usually around 200–300 words. There’s often a strict word limit, so make sure to check your university’s requirements.

In a thesis or dissertation, the acknowledgements should usually be no longer than one page. There is no minimum length.

The acknowledgements are generally included at the very beginning of your thesis , directly after the title page and before the abstract .
