This thesis aims to define and understand the post-digital within architecture, beyond its critical contribution to the realm of architectural imagery. The theory that is developed, argues that a post-digital practice of utilizing sourced material can contribute to the discipline of the design of architectural elements, components, and spaces as much so as it may contribute to the development of architectural imagery. Despite the atmosphere of difference that characterizes the contemporary debate over the definition of the digital condition, there is shared agreement that the post-digital indeed reigns as the hallmark of a contemporary era that establishes itself as after-digital.

From this known I argue that the influence of extremely large data sets characterized in search-based consumption that may be analyzed computationally to reveal patterns, trends, and associations within not only architectural imagery, but the development of post-digital architectural spatial constructs as well.

This research focuses on the evolving nature and concepts of digital- computational designs and attempts to elucidate the impacts on the architectural design process. The motivation for this thesis is based on the recent interest in various Architectural conferences and publications on the effects of the process change caused by digital means. The study is centred on the assumption that computational methods have enhanced creativity and proffered design solutions that could not be achieved by conventional means. The answers to this assumptions and questions have been sought through a thorough exploration of the diverse concepts and tools and processes that enable design computation. It then proceeds to investigate design projects executed by contemporary architects that engage in the use of computation. The findings from the inquiry ascertains the hypothesis and explicates the benefits inherent in the projects investigated. It concludes by highlighting the need to sensitize and raise the awareness of professional and students on the benefits and potentials of design enabled by computation.

A Comparison study of Interlocking Wave Jointed Geometry using Finite Element and Physical Modelling Methods

Algorithmic Design (AD) is a programming-based approach to design where, instead of creating a model of the intended design, the designer creates a program that generates the model of the intended design. This approach provides many opportunities for innovation and improvement in the design process. However, despite having been extensively explored with geometry-based Computer-Aided Design (CAD) tools over the past years, AD has only recently started to be explored with the Building Information Modelling (BIM) methodology brought by BIM tools. BIM brings substancial gains to the design activity and, as a result, has started to become mandatory in architectural practices all over the world. By combining algorithmic processes with the BIM methodology, a new approach to design emerges, one that we designate Algorithmic-based Building Information Modelling (A-BIM). In this thesis, we define, explore and evaluate A-BIM in the context of architectural design. Through a case study, we compare A-BIM to two other design approaches, namely an algorithmic approach to geometry-based CAD and a manual BIM approach, and we show that A-BIM can offer great benefits to architectural practices.

This is the first volume of the conference proceedings of the 31st eCAADe conference, held from 18-20 September 2013 at the Faculty of Architecture of Delft University of Technology in Delft, the Netherlands. Both volumes together contain 150 papers that were submitted and accepted to this conference. The theme of the 31st eCAADe conference is the role of computation in the consideration of performance in planning and design. Since long, a building no longer simply serves to shelter human activity from the natural environment. It must not just defy natural forces, carry its own weight, its occupants and their possessions, it should also functionally facilitate its occupants’ activities, be aesthetically pleasing, be economical in building and maintenance costs, provide temperature, humidity, lighting and acoustical comfort, be sustainable with respect to material, energy and other resources, and so forth. Considering all these performance aspects in building design is far from straig...

PARAMETRICISM VS. MATERIALISM Evolution of Digital Technologies for Development

The task of geography is to establish a critical system which embraces the phenomenology of space in order to grasp all of its meaning in the varied terrestrial scene (Sauer 1925). Brownfields are a global geographic concern that have been considerably researched within the universal discourse. Computer Aided Design (CAD) and its tools have been widely used to enhance and optimize urban plans during both design and implementation phases. Nonetheless, the connection between the two is often broken. While greenfield development enjoys the employment and implementation of a wide array of CAD tools, brownfield redevelopment projects are still struggling with traditional planning and management methods. Looking at the association between sustainable brownfield redevelopment and the optimization of CAD tools and software in the city of Amman, Jordan, the paper attempts to shed light on the unfulfilled potentials of advancement the spatial tools have to offer to the ongoing quest for sustainable urban development on the local scale and the global debate around the urban paradox on the wider scheme. Using empirical data collected and processed in response to the problem posed, the results indicate a CAD-based model could streamline sustainable brownfield development and save substantial time and resources which would otherwise be required using traditional methods. The paper therefore argues that the need for a comprehensive computer aided intervention for the development and management of marginal and overlooked geographies of brownfields in the city of Amman is long overdue.

The nature of creative engagement with computers and software presents a number of challenges to 4E cognition and requires the development of analytical frameworks that can encompass cognitive processes as they extend across material and informational realms. Here I argue that an enactive view of mind allows for better understanding of digital practice by advancing a dynamic, transactional, and affective framework. This enactive framework is in part developed through the Material Engagement Theory (MET) put forward by Lambros Malafouris, in part from the phenomenologically inspired philosophy of Bernard Stiegler. Both advance temporality, technics and technique as key to understanding human creative imagination and their work can support each other in different ways; Stiegler allows for a theorisation of digital tools largely missing from the cognitive archaeology of Malafouris, whilst Malafouris provides a theory of mind to further develop key ideas in Stiegler’s philosophy. Bringing their work together through Gilbert Simondon’s theory of individuation, I develop the concept of enactive individuation and apply this to the analysis of a case of robotic design and fabrication from my fieldwork with digital architects and engineers. This case allows for further exploration of how enactivism might productively be extended into the digital realm by underscoring the explorative engagement at heart of even highly systematic work with computers and software.

Architecture Thesis: A culmination of all those years of intense training, sleepless nights, countless submissions and unforgettable memories. The grand finale!

It is a real test to showcase all the skills you’ve gained over the years in a single project. Naturally, choosing the right topic from an ocean of architecture thesis topics is one of the biggest challenges you can face as a final year student, as the topic itself may define the trajectory of your thesis!

To ease your conflicted mind, we have curated a comprehensive list of popular architecture thesis projects you might want to explore in your final year, along with links to relevant theses across the internet for your ready reference.

Go on, have a look! What sparks your interest?

Housing/ Residential Projects

1. Affordable Housing

“Housing for all” is a major goal developing countries are striving to achieve. Not everyone has the resources to own a house or even rent one out. Conscious and well-planned housing design can turn cities into places where owning a house is not merely a dream. And architects can play a pivotal role in achieving this noble goal.

2. Gated Communities

With the city centres choking with pollution, traffic congestion and over-population, many people are now moving to the suburbs in closed, secure and private gated communities. These colonies circumference almost every major city now, with more emerging as you read. A gated community design could be an interesting (though slightly controversial) architecture thesis topic to explore residential neighbourhood planning.

3. Modular/ Disaster Relief/ Emergency Shelters

Land and resources are limited but the demand for them only keeps increasing giving rise to environmental hazards like deforestation, pollution and depletion of natural assets. In a rapidly changing, calamity-prone world, the design of modular, mobile, disaster relief shelters is the need of the hour!

4. Slum Redevelopment

Urban informality may be a fascinating, complex issue to tackle for your architecture thesis projects. Many people have varied opinions on the dense, informal urban developments popularly known as ‘slums’ , but few are willing to tackle the difficult issue from top to bottom (or bottom up!). Are you one of the few?

Institutional Projects

Render of an architecture thesis project on an art and architecture centre by an undergraduate student

5. Educational and Skill-Training Institutions

Schools play an important role in shaping a person and are key in bringing up generations of bright individuals. Educational and skill-training institutions have vast options, ranging from kindergartens to higher-education institutes; schools of dance to special-needs institutes ! Ready to shape minds?

6. Rehabilitation and Wellness Institutions

A sound mind and sound body are key to a happy life!

Unfortunately, sometimes individuals have to be institutionalised to get their health back on track. Rehabilitation centres and centres for people with depression or trauma aim at people’s mental wellness, while public gyms and civic sports centres aim at people’s physical wellness. If healing architecture and landscape is something you like, this could be the best architecture thesis topic for you!

7. Research Institutions

Progress in science, technology and humanities improves our way of living and ensures our well-being. The Sheldon Coopers among us wouldn’t be happy to see any fewer research centres and laboratories than there are!

Public Infrastructure Projects

Render of an architecture thesis project by an undergraduate student on a cruise terminal

8. Hospitals

Healthcare services are undoubtedly the most important services any region needs. The pandemic has made us understand how under-equipped even the best hospitals can be and so there is an even bigger reason for every hospital, be it multi-speciality/ speciality , maternity, special needs, public or private , to be as well designed as possible. This, more than ever, is the need of the hour and can make for a pressing architecture thesis project.

9. Transit Hubs

Airports , Bus Terminals , Railway Stations , Inland Waterways, Seaports.

Do you love to travel? Have you ever waited for a train and imagined how much better that railway station could be? Then what are you waiting for? Be the change!

10. Sports Stadia

Remember that first stadium experience of watching a cricket or football match? The energy of the crowd, the adrenaline rush! Most group sports stadia ( Cricket , Football , Hockey, Baseball, etc) and sports cities require meticulous study before designing, making a very suitable architecture thesis project for students.

11. Urban/Street Redevelopment

How often do we walk the streets of our cities and almost die because a bike passed within inches of us? Street redevelopment projects catering to pedestrianisation are proven to improve the lives of millions and are rapidly gaining urgency in the urban design domain.

These projects often require extensive site study. Not sure what all to cover in your site analysis? Read - Site Analysis Categories You Need to Cover For Your Architecture Thesis Project .

12. Waterfront Development

Rivers are considered sacred and life-giving across the world. The pitiful conditions of water bodies today have led urban designers to take up River/Canal-front Development Projects which aim at minimising water pollution, a smooth transition from land to water, and ultimately encouraging visitors for leisure and fun activities.

13. Public Parks and Plazas

Parks are the lungs of the concrete jungles many of us live in. After a day of intense work, all we need is some greenery and fresh air; or to grab a beer at that corner cafe in the city square! The design of public parks, plazas and playgrounds could be the best architecture thesis topic for an urban/landscape enthusiast.

14. Social Infrastructure

A robust, well-functioning society accommodates and facilitates the wellness of all its citizens and living beings. Infrastructure like orphanages , nursing homes , animal shelters , night shelters , daycare centres, banks, prisons , juvenile schools, community development centres , and many more tend to those social needs of the society which cannot be overlooked. Inclined towards public welfare? Look no further!

Socio-Cultural Projects

Render of an architecture thesis project of a museum of modern arts

15. Community and Convention Centres

Humans are social animals. Now and then, we crave a meet-and-greet. Community and Convention Centres cater to this very need, and exploring the design angles for human interaction may be something worthy of your architecture thesis project. Be ready for competition though, this is one of the most popular architecture thesis topics students undertake!

16. Museums and Libraries

The culture-lovers among us would understand the value of a good museum or library and appreciate a well-designed one. Be it a museum of arts and crafts, culture, architecture , history or science, if the give and take of knowledge through some entertainment and delight (infotainment) is something you see yourself doing, then this could be the best architecture thesis topic for you.

17. Memorials

Memorials are the physical manifestations of the struggles endured, victories earned and life-changing events in history. They remind us to never forget the past, hoping for a better future at the same time, making memorial design both a fascinating yet weighted exercise.

18. Places of Worship/ Spiritual Centres

One cannot separate a human from their faith. Having a place to worship or connect with one’s spiritual self is as important to a human as going to school or a cinema hall. Places of worship like temples, churches, masjids, gurudwaras, monasteries , etcetera; and spiritual or meditation centres serve as places for gathering and become important landmarks in a settlement.

Conservation and Heritage Projects

Render of an architecture thesis project on the adaptive reuse of a power plant

19. Conservation of Heritage Structures

Conservation of the priceless built heritage like palaces, monuments, places of worship, ancient settlements, etc has always been on the agenda of organisations like UNESCO and the Archeological Survey of India. If historical significance gets your heart rate up, hi history nerd! Help in conserving our heritage structures !

20. Adaptive Reuse of Heritage Buildings

History nerd, if you’re still here, here’s another architecture thesis topic for you. Some heritage can be conserved to attract tourists and some that are too out-of-order could be modified and reused for a different purpose, generating economy. Converting royal palaces into heritage hotels, a king’s court into an emergency ward for covid patients or factories into community spaces, adaptive reuse of the built form requires fine skill, respect for heritage, and an active imagination!

Offices/ Corporate Projects

Render of an architecture thesis project on an office tower by some undergraduate students

21. Government Buildings

Workspaces for all government officials are mandatory for smooth administration. The scale of government buildings is diverse, from the Central Vista Redevelopment Project (*ahem*) to a district-sessions court. Some common categories are high courts, government-owned banks, secretariat and corporation buildings , income-tax offices, assembly and gathering centres , media offices and so on.

Sounds boring? Don’t be so sure. What originally sounds typical is where there is maximum potential to surprise your critics!

22. Corporate Office Towers

We all have seen or at least talked about the famous corporate jungles of our towns. They not only serve as important landmarks but help in increasing the economic value of a region (Very SEZ-y!). If you wanna tame the jungle, you could explore corporate office-building design for your architecture thesis topic.

23. Co-working and Remote-working Spaces

A popular trend before COVID was sharing workspaces, which now have the potential to be thought of as remote-working spaces! Rethinking the design of co-working spaces is very relevant to the times and has great scope for innovation.

With the times we live in, this could be the best architecture thesis topic!

Entertainment and Commercial Projects

Render of an architecture thesis project on an urban entertainment centre

24. Theatres and Auditoria

Who doesn’t like good showtime with family and friends? Theatres, auditoria and performance centres are the core of spaces showcasing and witnessing talent, and fall under another typology which has the potential to be reworked post-pandemic. The design of such entertainment stations can test the knowledge of large-span structures without losing a strong grip on creativity and functionality.

25. Multiplexes and Malls

Malls and multiplexes are very popular among the masses as they possess multiple brands of shopping, entertainment and food centres. Whether or not you agree with the mall typology, more keep coming up in growing towns every year. So why not study how they work and improve the concept for your architecture thesis project? The consumerist urbania will thank you!

26. Marketplaces

Shopping for groceries and essential commodities is a frequent need, and most people head to a single marketplace for all their essential goods shopping. A place with a high frequency of movement requires meticulous and thorough design, but can also be one of the most fun challenges to take up! Think farmer markets, community-owned produce markets, mandis, harbour fish markets, and flea markets, the possibilities are endless!

27. Mixed-Use Hubs

Taking your design challenge up a notch is by taking up a mixed-use hub . This is a high-density area that caters to more than one function and has mega economic value. It could be a combination of residential, commercial, institutional, or hospitality, commercial and public space, or much more. This concept is taken to another level by bringing transit hubs into the fray with transit-oriented development!

28. Film, Photo and Animation Studios

The use of digital media has increased multifold in the past couple of decades. A lot of creatives express themselves through digital content, increasing the need for more film , photo, animation and integrated studios . Since these functions can be highly specialised, there is a lot of potential to do impressive research for your architecture thesis project!

Hospitality and Tourism Projects

Render of an architecture thesis project of an eco-tourist hub of Khonoma village, by Shanjo A. Kithan

29. Eco-Tourism Resorts and Visiting Centres

Imagine spending a weekend at a secluded place, close to nature, with all the facilities you need to relax and just de-stress! Ecological resorts and tourist visiting centres aim to cause as little damage to the environment as possible. Keen on environmental sustainability, eco-tourism resorts should be encouraged in the tourism and hospitality industry and make for very relevant architecture thesis topics.

Landscape architecture enthusiasts, where are you all at?

30. Backpacker Lodging/ Youth Hostels

While the question of travel arises, not everyone can afford finely kempt hotels or resorts to lodge at. The youth may opt for backpacking trips to save money as well as to have an interesting experience! Backpacking/ youth hostels like Zostel and Nomads World are buzzing for their affordability, convenience and prospects of networking with like-minded people. If this is your jam, consider creating innovative spaces for it!

Futuristic/ Sci-fi/ Conceptual Projects

Render of a conceptual architectural design for urban agriculture

How about a settlement on Mars? Or a concert hall in the air? A transit hub of 2050? A forest within the city? Perhaps a residential colony on the water!

Such futuristic or conceptual architecture thesis topics are all the more enthralling as they might not have any precedents. They stretch a creative brain to its limit, and in the process may transform into a brilliant idea. Challenging conventions, thinking out of the box and taking up a futuristic architecture thesis project could be your achievement (both in design and in convincing the faculty) as a young designer!

Having read about some common architecture thesis topics, it is important to know that you must not be limited to the above list. Your architecture thesis is your own brainchild, and it does not need to conform or even fit within a category.

A great architecture thesis is also a key ingredient in creating a kickass architecture portfolio ! So give your all. Who knows, you may even end up receiving an award for your architecture thesis !

Hoping you found the inspiration you were looking for!

The Architecture of Virtual Environments: Designing for the Metaverse

digital architecture thesis

  • Written by Andreea Cutieru
  • Published on April 22, 2022

For the past couple of years, the metaverse has been gaining prominence, prompting architects to consider its implications for our relationship with the physical environment and how can architecture contribute to this new virtual space. Architecture in the metaverse is no longer a fringe subject, having been embraced by established firms. "The metaverse is where much of the architectural action and innovation will be happening in the coming period," says Patrick Schumacher . Unbound from restraints such as physics, material properties and construction costs, the metaverse unlocked a new realm of architectural expression. The following looks at some of the various ways the profession engages with the expanding field of digital environments.

The Architecture of Virtual Environments: Designing for the Metaverse - Image 2 of 5

Unlike the 20th-century paper architecture, the architecture of the metaverse serves commercial purposes, continuing to be underpinned by a client-architect relationship. As outlandish at it sounds, large sums of money are being invested in digital land. Projected to become a trillion-dollar industry, many are rushing to become part of it, and the design of their virtual environments comes into central focus, as shown by new business opportunities such as Decentraland Architects . The newly-forged 3d design and architecture studio helps blockchain virtual world Decentraland users to develop their property in the metaverse.

In this virtual real estate market, architects and 3d designers seem on a level playing field, but not everyone agrees."The metaverse is being built as we speak, rapidly. But who is designing it? Who should design it? My thesis is that the design of the metaverse falls within the remit of the discipline of architecture and the wider design disciplines," Schumacher argues in a recent interview . While, in theory, the metaverse should be a levelling playing field where anyone could create their own universe, in reality, companies are looking to bring users to their part of the metaverse and invest money and knowledge into achieving this. Therefore, they've started commissioning established architecture firms for projects in the metaverse, the simple pairing of big names gaining instant interest in the initiative.

Virtual Museums

The Architecture of Virtual Environments: Designing for the Metaverse - Image 2 of 5

Digital art museums and galleries have been around for several years in the form of virtual tours of significant institutions, but the trend has only been exacerbated by the pandemic and the growing popularity of NFTs. Auction house Sotheby's has created a digital replica of its London headquarters in Decentraland, which functions as a virtual art gallery. Architects have also adhered to this new form of showcasing art. For Art Basel Miami, Zaha Hadid Architects created a virtual art gallery titled NFTism, exploring architecture and social interaction in the metaverse. Based on MMO (massively multiplayer online game) technologies, the virtual gallery featured designs created by ZHA that focused on user experience.

Work environments

Virtual meeting rooms have become ubiquitous since the onset of the pandemic, but the possibilities of new virtual workspaces attracted not only software companies but established architecture firms. Last year, UNStudio and Bjarke Ingels Group partnered with Squint/Opera to develop SpaceForm , a virtual, cloud-based platform that facilitates design, review and collaboration processes for architects and developers . The prototype, which simulated 3D environments with the scope of improving remote communication, was developed in 2018 and has subsequently been improved based on the feedback of architects and designers. Bjarke Ingels synthesizes the capabilities of the latest SpaceForm prototype as "the augmented creative, collaborative environment of the future which will allow an instantaneous confluence of actual and imagined realities – the present and the future fusing in our augmented sense of reality."

Commercial Projects in the Metaverse

The Architecture of Virtual Environments: Designing for the Metaverse - Image 4 of 5

Architects are currently being commissioned to design masterplans and architectural spaces in the metaverse, giving rise to a whole new area of expertise within the profession. Grimshaw was commissioned to design a project in the metaverse for the forthcoming platform pax.world. The platform offers users who buy a plot of land in the metaverse the possibility of creating their own subverse and using it as a virtual headquarters, educational space, or entertainment venue. Grimshaw is set to design the first four gathering places for pax.world, dubbed "metaserai", from the caravanserai along old trade routes.

Zaha Hadid Architects has recently designed a virtual "libertarian micro-nation" in the metaverse titled The Liberland Metaverse , featuring hyper-realistic districts. The office used its knowledge and experience in spatial design, wayfinding, and the framing of social atmospheres to create the virtual development. Since companies are bound to have physical space as well, the firm strongly believes in the synergy between the virtual and the physical environments, and consequently, it is architects who should be designing these sites and not graphic designers.

The metaverse continues to be highly debated, as some consider it the future of architecture and others a speculative phenomenon where most interactions are monetized . Whether the metaverse unfolds a new revenue stream for architects, or a paradigm shift within the profession remains to be seen.

Excerpt: ‘Nexus Innovation Hub’ is an architecture thesis by Bichoy Fathi Zaki Thaoufilis, from Faculty of Fine Arts – Department of Architecture, Helwan university , that seeks to maximise the site’s potential and design a smart, adaptable structure that can host a variety of events. designed to promote tech education, research, and community outreach. The proposal promotes tech education, research, and community outreach. The project, which is the first of its kind in Egypt, establishes a new benchmark for sustainability and shows that living structures are achievable in even the most extreme climates.

Introduction: The objective of this thesis is to develop a centre for innovation in the fields of machine learning and artificial intelligence to foster young researchers and their ideas and connect them with industry leaders and major companies. The goal is to design a smart, adaptable structure that can host a variety of events and provide a pleasant environment for learning, working, and innovating.

The Nexus Innovation Hub is designed to promote tech education, research, and community outreach. The project, which is the first of its kind in Egypt, establishes a new benchmark for sustainability and shows that living structures are achievable in even the most extreme climates.

Site Context

Nexus innovation Hub | Architecture Thesis

The central region of The Knowledge City in the New Administrative Capital (NAC), a brand-new metropolitan area in Cairo Governorate, Egypt, and a satellite of Cairo City, has been chosen as the location for the project. It has been under development since 2015 and is intended to serve as Egypt’s next capital.

Nexus innovation Hub | Architecture Thesis

A residential suburb borders The Knowledge City to the west, and the Regional Ring Road runs along its western edge. The site chosen for the proposal is surrounded by a variety of institutions, including the University of Canada, Egypt University of Informatics, and European Universities in Egypt, in addition to more institutes that are currently under construction.

Design Process

The goal of the design is to create a versatile workspace that can accommodate varied activities and provide inviting areas for studying, working, and innovating. Three keywords derived to support the concept were (i) Flexibility (ii) Connection and (iii) Variation.

Nexus innovation Hub | Architecture Thesis

(i) Flexibility: In order to accommodate different requirements of a functional workspace, such as solitary cubicles, group discussions, and meetings, the arrangement was kept flexible, shapeshifting like a cloud.

Nexus innovation Hub | Architecture Thesis

(ii) Connection: In order to enhance user interactions, the zoning of areas was developed with a physical and visual connection established both horizontally and vertically. The users will be able to exchange ideas and learn new concepts due to these interactive spaces.

Nexus innovation Hub | Architecture Thesis

(iii) Variation: In order to combine expertise and knowledge and produce creative results, a variety of spaces were merged together.

Nexus innovation Hub | Architecture Thesis

Form Derivation: A mass was extruded with a built up area that utilises 30% of the site area. The mass was then divided into multiple parts in accordance with the essential functions and oriented in relation to the climate of the region. Finally, different forms were given to these masses in order to adapt to particular functions.

Final Outcome

Nexus innovation Hub | Architecture Thesis

Masterplan: The design proposal emphasises pedestrian and bike-friendly circulation around the campus while also focusing on a considerably landscaped master plan in order to create a sustainable campus. The goal of the project is to maximise and magnify the location’s potential and turn it into a centre of interaction and activities. The accessibility and extroversion of outdoor spaces naturally promote an exchange of ideas across disciplines.

Nexus innovation Hub | Architecture Thesis

Spaces: The building’s commercial areas, training centre, and service centre are all located on the ground floor and are centred on the reception, which serves as the complex’s core. A green street divides the structure, providing an appealing environment for employees to enjoy during breaks and lunch. The upper levels include technical and administrative offices, separated by a variety of leisure spaces, outdoor gyms, and public lounging areas.

Nexus innovation Hub | Architecture Thesis

Roofing: The design includes a tent-like photovoltaic integrated canopy skin that covers the structure. The canopy skin will control indoor climate, air quality, and sound as well as enable the production of renewable energy on the site. In order to lower the building’s cooling energy and enhance the air quality, landscaped spaces were also added to its flat roofs, where everything from low grasses and herbs to trees and shrubs can be grown.

Nexus innovation Hub | Architecture Thesis

Façades: The façade’s sinuous direction matches the solar orientation. It minimises exposure on the sunny sides while maximising the openness on the north side for views and natural light. With no mechanical components or modern technology, this sustainable facade solution lowers the building’s overall energy consumption. While the facades facing the green street are made of glass, the exterior facades are made of brick. The upper levels of these inward-looking façade decrease, giving the green street a feeling of more openness. To improve connections inside the office complex, walkways connect the building’s top floors.

Nexus innovation Hub | Architecture Thesis

The digital media façade aims to develop into a virtual forum for interaction and conversation with visitors as well as locals. It is intended to encourage the sharing of knowledge, social interaction, and play-based activities.

Nexus innovation Hub | Architecture Thesis

Plaza: The plaza is packed with various pieces of furniture that offer various levels of interactions and tasks to be accomplished much like the components of a computer chip. Students are compared to electrons or bits of information, and they are assumed to circulate and share information to form a complex network of greater intelligence.

Nexus innovation Hub | Architecture Thesis

Conclusion: The goal of the project is to maximise the site’s potential and turn it into a centre of communication and activities. This goal is accomplished by perceiving outdoor areas with an inherent accessibility and extroversion that promotes the fusion of ideas from various disciplines. The proposal entirely occupies the site with urban furniture in order to establish a new centre of activity and revitalise the knowledge city in the new administrative capital.

This thesis introduces an innovative mental health retreat grounded in the principles of therapeutic and adaptive design. The current state of mental healthcare architecture lacks a focus on human-centered design, primarily due to their enclosed spaces, overcrowded dormitories, and conforming layouts. Adaptive design in architecture advocates for a more user-centric approach by implementing a system that empowers individuals to customize architectural components, such as walls, roofs, doors, windows, and furnishings. This approach aims to foster individuality, flexibility, freedom, control, and comfort. Therapeutic design in architecture emphasizes the influence of spatial, lighting, thermal, and acoustic design on the human brain, mind, body, and behavior with the goal of crafting environments that enhance comfort, facilitate healing, and contribute to overall well-being.
