Simply defined, Astrophysics, commonly called space science is a subset of astronomy that primarily studies celestial objects and their composition by applying the laws and principles of physics to explain the phenomenon. The study of astronomy and its branches can be dated back to Greek philosophers like Aristotle who sought to study space and its components but it was Galileo and Newton that transformed the tradition of astronomy and its study. The study of cosmology and planetary science is closely associated with astrophysics and is often referred to as sister sciences.

Some of the course’s main objectives are listed below.

  • To learn more about the universe’s composition.
  • To expose the truths and dispel myths about the universe.
  • To create new observational techniques for a better understanding of the solar system.

Title: bharatbench: dataset for data-driven weather forecasting over india.

Abstract: Advanced weather and climate models use numerical techniques on grided meshes to simulate atmospheric and ocean dynamics, which are computationally expensive. Data-driven approaches are gaining popularity in weather and climate modeling, with a broad scope of applications. Although Machine Learning (ML) has been employed in this domain, significant progress has occurred in the past decade, leading to ML applications that are now competitive with traditional numerical methods. This study presents a user-friendly dataset for data-driven medium-range weather forecasting focused on India. The dataset is derived from IMDAA reanalysis datasets and optimized for ML applications. The study provides clear evaluation metrics and a few baseline scores from simple linear regression techniques and deep learning models. The dataset can be found at this https URL , while the codes are available at this https URL . We hope this dataset will boost data-driven weather forecasting over India. We also address limitations in the current evaluation process and future challenges in data-driven weather forecasting.

Wasserstrom Prize for Graduate Teaching Presented to Physics Professor Christian Santangelo

Christian Santangelo , professor and director of graduate studies in the physics department in the College of Arts and Sciences (A&S) and member of the BioInspired Institute , is the 2024 recipient of the William Wasserstrom Prize in recognition of his exemplary mentorship of graduate students. A&S Dean Behzad Mortazavi conferred the award on Santangelo at the Graduate School doctoral hooding ceremony on May 10.

Christian Santangelo, professor of physics

Christian Santangelo

The prize is awarded annually to a faculty member who exemplifies the qualities of William Wasserstrom, a professor of English who died in 1985. Wasserstrom was a scholar known for his broad interests and profound impact on learning, with a particular teaching interest in the graduate seminar. Since his death, Wasserstrom has been memorialized with this award by A&S for outstanding success as a graduate seminar leader, research and dissertation director, advisor and role model for graduate students.

Santangelo joined Syracuse University in 2019 and was named physics director of graduate studies in 2021. His research interests focus on soft condensed-matter physics and materials geometry, extreme mechanics, 4D printing and self-folding origami, design of mechanical metamaterials and topological effect in nonlinear systems. He teaches Physics 1, Introduction to Quantum Mechanics, Quantum Mechanics and Advanced Statistical Mechanics.

He has co-authored 75 peer-reviewed articles, been quoted in multiple publications related to his research, presented at dozens of conferences and symposia and has received nearly $4.5 million in external grant funding for his work.

Santangelo recently served as “March Meeting” program chair for the Division of Soft Matter (DSOFT) of the American Physical Society. He was also the co-lead of the Smart Materials focus group within the BioInspired Institute and a member of the College Level Liberal Arts Core Committee at A&S.

Santangelo has received several other awards and honors throughout his career, including the Glenn H. Brown Prize from the International Liquid Crystal Society, a CAREER Award from the National Science Foundation, the Early Career Award from the APS DSOFT and he was named a fellow of the American Physical Society.

“Professor Santangelo is certainly an example of the level of excellence Professor Wasserstrom represented, and a person whose extraordinary commitment to the mentorship of graduate students is deserving of recognition,” says Mortazavi. “His scholarship and the guidance and knowledge he has provided as a mentor in graduate education has positively impacted the physics department, its students and the entire college since he joined the University five years ago. It is an honor to present him with this award.“

Santangelo has mentored 20 graduate students and post-docs and has served as a research advisor for 12 undergraduates. Professor Mitchell Soderberg, associate chair of the Department of Physics, notes that a common theme heard about Santangelo is his “knack for helping students develop as scholars—not by knowing all the answers but by helping them to recognize the best questions to pursue.”

Former students and colleagues submitted enthusiastic nomination letters that spoke to Santangelo’s qualifications for this award.

“As a mentor, Chris struck a perfect balance of being available for guidance and allowing independence. By imparting principles explicitly and through action, I learned from Chris how to identify interesting scientific problems, find strategies for tackling them, and navigate uncertainty and communication results,” says former student Salem Mosleh, a research associate at Harvard’s School of Engineering and Applied Science. “He makes sure students get exposure to the scientific community, allowing me to attend conferences and meet collaborators—which helped me get my position at Harvard.”

“As his first Ph.D. student, I was fortunate to have Professor Santangelo as my mentor, and I can confidently say that he has a natural talent for selecting research problems that are interesting, challenging and relevant in the modern context of theoretical physics,” says Marcelo Dias, who is a senior lecturer in structural engineering at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. “Professor Santangelo’s extensive mathematical expertise and practical approach to research have contributed to my career development. UK’s graduate route visa to continue: Indian students aspiring to study abroad have reason to cheer

I n a relief to thousands of students from India who are planning to go to the United Kingdom this year, the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) recommended the continuation of the graduate route work visa, also known as PSW or post-study work visa, to continue in its current form.

This visa enables international students to work for two years in the UK after graduating from a British university.

For the unversed, the committee was entrusted with the task by Home Secretary James Cleverly to review the graduate route visa and submit the report on May 14.

Key findings of the report:

Will the graduate rote visa be axed, as was anticipated by some sections of students and agents.

No, the visa category will continue in its current form.

During the review, did they find that the objectives of introducing this category were met?

There was a target of six lakh international students in the UK by 2030, and this target has been met ahead of time. While one cannot estimate the contribution of the graduate route in meeting this target, the review indicates it has played a major role.

“Based on our analysis, the graduate route is broadly achieving its objectives and supporting the International Education Strategy. We recommend retaining the graduate route in its current form,” the report reads.

Is there any abuse of the graduate route?

The committee did not find any evidence of widespread abuse of the graduate route. The risks of abuse are low on account of the limited number of conditions the route imposes. However, the report acknowledges the exploitation due to poor practices by agents who may be mis-selling UK higher education.

“We have not been able to assess the risk of overstaying due to a lack of data on this from the Home Office. We are concerned about the potential exploitation of both student and graduate visa holders due to poor practices by certain agents and sub-agents who recruit students onto courses and may be mis-selling UK higher education, but this is a separate issue from abuse of the rules of the Graduate route,” the panel observed.

How many Indians make use of the visa?

A total of 1.14 lakh graduate route visas were granted for main applicants in 2023, with another 30,000 for dependants. The report noted that the use of the graduate route is concentrated among four nations: India, China,  Pakistan and Nigeria – which collectively account for 70 per cent of all graduate visas, with India accounting for over 40 per cent, i.e. a total of 45,600.

The majority of those (91 per cent) on the graduate route finished their Taught Master’s degree. Interestingly, most of the growth is from non-Russell Group universities’ postgraduate courses, which account for 66 per cent of all graduate visas, the report noted.

What work do graduate visa holders do during and after their time on the route and are they contributing to the economy?

The report noted that the graduate visa holders are initially overrepresented in lower-paid work (in Skilled Worker route threshold for health and care occupations), but that their outcomes improve over a period of time.

After one year, their earnings are not different from those of domestic graduates, particularly 15 months after they have graduated.

Among the first cohort of graduate visa holders, around 50 per cent moved on to Skilled Worker visas, which means into skilled work. It is worth noting that the graduate visa holders who move into the Skilled Worker route have earnings and work in occupations comparable to domestic UK graduates.

Indian students comprise around 40 per cent of the total number of graduate route visa holders, the report stated.
