  • For applicants
  • The PhD Study programme
  • Elements of the PhD study programme
  • The individual PhD plan

The individual PhD plan

Within three months of the commencement of the PhD programme, the PhD students must have an approved PhD plan. This also applies to PhD students having commenced their PhD programme in connection with their master’s degree programme.

As a minimum the individual PhD plan must describe the planning of the following elements of the PhD students work:

  • Time schedule
  • Agreement on the type and scope of the supervision
  • Plan for completing the PhD project
  • Plan for participation in PhD courses
  • Plan for participating in active research communities
  • Plan for teaching activities and knowledge dissemination
  • If relevant, agreements on intellectual property rights and publication
  • A plan for funding the project (budget).

In connection with the conclusion of the agreement on the type and scope of the supervision provided, the mutual expectations of the PhD student and his or her supervisor(s) must be reconciled.

The principal supervisor is responsible for preparing and keeping the PhD plan up to date. However, at the Faculty of Social Sciences, it is in fact the PhD student who is responsible for updating the PhD plan throughout the study. The plan must be made in writing, signed by both the supervisor and the PhD student and approved by the head of the PhD school. The head of PhD programme at the department also plays an important part since he/she is responsible for the department’s PhD study programme. The plan is a project management tool and as it forms the basis for the semi-annual assessments, it should go into detail. The plan is dynamic and must be continuously updated, e.g. in connection with major changes to the project, changes in relation to stays at research environments/institutions, leave of absence etc. The principal supervisor must approve all changes to the PhD plan.

The PhD student should upload the individual study plan onto his/her group room on KUnet along with the assessment reports and the cumulative form where all the student's activities are noted.

PhD Position in Planetary Sciences at KU Leuven, Department of Geology

The Human Resources Strategy for Researchers

Job Information

Offer description.

The Department of Geology at KU Leuven invites applications for a PhD position in Planetary Sciences, focusing on research related to the planetary mantle melting and/or magma ocean crystallization. This project, funded by the European Research Council Consolidator Grant "IronHeart," offers a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research in understanding the early stages of planetary formation through experimental investigations.

Project Description:

The successful candidate will conduct experimental investigations to simulate the formation and evolution of magma oceans in planets. By recreating the extreme conditions present during the early stages of planetary accretion, the project aims to elucidate the physical and chemical processes governing magma ocean crystallization, differentiation, and subsequent solidification. While experimental studies will be the primary focus, the project will also involve numerical modeling to complement and interpret experimental results.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and conduct high-temperature experiments to simulate magma ocean processes using experimental petrology techniques.
  • Characterize the phase assemblages, mineralogical compositions, and textures of experimental samples through analytical methods such as electron microscopy, electron microprobe.
  • Develop and implement simple numerical models to simulate magma ocean crystallization and differentiation processes.

Requirements

Additional information.

We offer a fully funded 4 year PhD position.

  • Position: PhD Researcher
  • Duration: 4 years.
  • Salary: Competitive salary in accordance with KU Leuven's doctoral salary scale (~ 2500 EUR after tax).

  • Strong background in igneous petrology, experimental petrology, or mineral physics.
  • Proficiency in analytical techniques commonly used in petrology, such as electron microscopy, electron microprobe.
  • Experience with high-temperature experimental techniques is a bonus.
  • Basic understanding of numerical modeling concepts and willingness to learn and apply numerical methods to complement experimental studies.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with a passion for planetary science research.

Project Title: Allomorph computation in language production: a cross-linguistic study of speeded inflection

Field: Linguistics, Psycholinguistics

Project Description: When we want to speak, how do we mentally plan the sounds that eventually come together to form the word? This process seems trivial on the surface, but complications arise when one thinks of the finer details. One of the big wrinkles to this process is allomorphy — when a unit of meaning has multiple forms. For example, the English plural has three regular allomorphs: dog[z], cat[s], and leash[ɨz]. How do make sure we get the right allomorph? This is a question that has received a lot of attention in phonological theory (the first analysis of the English plural was almost 100 years ago!) yet severely understudied in psycholinguistics. My research hopes to bridge this gap by bringing together behavioural evidence from English and other languages (the content of this proposal) and potentially electrophysiological (EEG) evidence to shed light on the fine-grained timing properties of the processes described.

Advisor: Colin Wilson

About Me: I am from Coquitlam, British Columbia, Canada. I graduated from Simon Fraser University in 2021 with a degree in Linguistics and minor in Philosophy. I am currently a third year PhD student in the department. I am interested in morpho-phonology, and specialize in using behavioural experiments (speeded inflection, naming) to draw out the properties of phonological or morphological mental representations.

In the short term: I want to finish this PhD and sketch out a preliminary theory of morpho-phonology in language production while I’m at it. In the long term: I want to keep studying the representational basis of morphology, especially with non-English languages, perhaps as a faculty member somewhere back home…
