Research degrees - how to apply.

Thank you for your interest in continuing your studies with the School of Engineering and Materials Science.

Listed below you will find the steps to follow when applying for a PhD research degree in the School of Engineering and Materials Science, for more general information on postgraduate research degrees see the postgraduate study, research degrees web page.

1. Review entry requirements and funding

The entrance requirement for entry to a research degree is a good second class honours degree or a master's degree from an UK university, a recognised equivalent from an accredited overseas institution or an equivalent professional qualification. You should also take note of any English Language requirements if English is not your first language.  The College’s standard requirement for English is IELTS 6.5. Further details can be found on the International students pages .

At this stage it is important that you have a realistic plan to secure sufficient funding.  On your application, please be sure to include details of how you intend to secure sufficient funding to complete the research programme and writing up process within the normal time period, which is at least 36 months.

2. Make sure there is a research match

Before applying you need to ensure that the School has the expertise within the specific area to supervise your research. To do this you need to visit the School website and look under the research pages . You should look at what research groups there are and review individual staff research interests.

If you are able to identify a match with your own research interests, the next step is to complete the online application process (see point 3 below). 

3. Applying

Once you have identified a research area that matches your research interests, and hopefully also identified a research supervisor you should now complete the online application process.

You should read the full application guidelines notes, but generally each application should also include the following:

Degree transcripts. Please provide a transcript of your degree(s). If you have not yet completed your degree please provide a transcript of your results achieved to date.

• If your degree was from a UK university-please upload a transcript of your marks for each year.
• If your degree was from an overseas institution, you should supply a transcript of your marks for each year of your studies and a copy of your degree certificate together with a certified translation if the document is not in English. Please note that original documentation will be required before you enrol. International applicants are also advised to include high school transcripts.

Two references. Please provide the contact details of two referees. At least one reference must be from an academic referee who is in a position to comment on the standard of your academic work and suitability for postgraduate level study. Where appropriate, a second referee can provide comment on your professional experience.

Your referees can either submit a paper copy and post it to us, or complete it electronically and send it via email. Download our reference request form here: 

If your referee emails your reference to us we can only accept it if it is sent from a university or company email address. References from a personal email address such as ‘Yahoo’ or ‘Hotmail’ are not acceptable. Paper reference forms should be endorsed by an appropriate institution/company official stamp or on official institution/company letterhead. Alternatively if your referee has agreed to provide an open reference letter you can scan this and upload it, in the upload document section of the online form.

Research Proposal . 

All PhD applicants must write an acceptable research proposal.   This should answer three questions:

• What area of research are you interested in and why?  You should be as specific as possible.  Please indicate if you have already identified a research supervisor
• What is your experience in the relevant area?
• What are your career plans?

Your statement of research interest should be no more than 500 words long, or one side of A4 paper.

The above documents are mandatory but it is also advisable to send the following documents in support of your application:

• Statement of purpose Your statement of purpose should explain why you want to study your proposed course and how it will help your life and career. This should typically be one side of A4 paper.
• IELTS certificate If English is not your first language then you will require a valid English certificate, The College’s standard requirement for English is IELTS 6.5 with a minimum score of 5.5 in each individual test section (R,L,W,S). 4. What happens next

All applications will get logged initially with the Admissions Office , so they should be your first point of contact. The Admissions and Recruitment Office will forward your application to the School. If the School is interested in taking your application further, they will contact you directly to arrange an interview with two members of academic staff (one of whom will be your possible supervisor). Interviews normally last 30 minutes and may take place in person by visiting Queen Mary, occasionally interviews are conducted via teleconference call at a mutually agreeable time. We aim to inform you of a decision on your application within six to eight weeks of receipt if you have provided all the required documentation. If you require a decision by a given deadline in order to apply for funding please make this very clear on your application.

This programme gives you the freedom to build your own bespoke LLM. You can choose from the full range of the School of Law’s London-based LLM modules.

What you'll study

This LLM enables you to build your own customised degree by allowing you to pick from many of the modules offered across all specialisms. You will also be able to do an elective dissertation (30 credits) in any legal topic of your choice.

You don’t have to choose your modules until you have learnt about them in greater detail during your induction period. However, not all of the modules listed will be available in any one year and semesters listed can be subject to change.

We only allow one application from our range of LLM programmes so please ensure you apply for your main programme of interest. Please note you can request to change programme at offer stage via your MYSIS admissions portal and also request this after enrolment via the School of Law Taught Programme office.

If you would like your degree to show expertise in a specific area of law, you should apply for one of our specialised LLM programmes .

Additional costs

Depending on your chosen pathway, some of your modules may incur some additional costs (eg travel).

You will need to complete 180 credits in total, 30 credits of which can be by an elective dissertation of 10,000 words.

• You will be assessed by a range of methods combining examinations and coursework which will be fully explained in your student pack available during induction.

By opting for a General LLM, I had the liberty to choose across all specializations. You will be taught by a mixture of formal lectures and small group seminars. The seminars are designed to generate informed discussion around set topics, and may involve student presentations and group exercises as well as open discussion. 

You will have a team of advisers to support you, including the LLM and Research Directors, your dissertation supervisor (if choosing to do a dissertation), and tutors and your module convenors.

Professor Peter Alldridge

Professor Alldridge has served as a Specialist Adviser to joint Parliamentary Committees and is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences. He has published widely in the areas of criminal law, evidence, legal education, law and information technology, medical law, and law and disability.

Dr Gaetano Dimita

Diploma di Laurea in Giurisprudenza (Rome), LLM (London), PhD (London), Avvocato (Italian Bar - Rome)

Dr Dimita’s research focus on the interrelationship among creativity, interactivity and new technologies. He is the editor-in-chief of the Interactive Entertainment Law Review, Edward Elgar, and the organiser of the ‘More than Just a Game’ conference series.

Professor Jonathan Griffiths

BA (Oxon) MA

Professor Griffiths’ main research interests are in copyright policy and reform. He has been consulted on copyright policy by a number of public bodies including the UK IPO, SABIP, the European Commission, the Dutch Ministry of Justice and the Japanese Cabinet Secretariat.

Professor Rosa María Lastra

Professor Lastra’s research concerns financial law and regulation, central banking, international banking, international monetary law, law reform in emerging economies, law and economics, EU financial law, commercial law, banking law, sovereign debt, international economic law and bank resolution.

Professor Loukas Mistelis

LLB, MLE, FCIArb, Advocate (Athens Bar)

Professor Mistelis is an acknowledged authority on international dispute resolution and investment treaty law. He has practiced law in Germany, Greece and the United Kingdom, having also acted as a consultant in Cambodia, Japan, Moldova, Nigeria, Poland, Ukraine and Vietnam.

Professor Violeta Moreno-Lax

LLB/LLM (Murcia); MA (College of Europe); PGCert (ULB); PhD (Louvain); PGCAP (Queen Mary); FHEA

Dr Moreno-Lax is founder of SAROBMED: The Search and Rescue Observatory for the Mediterranean, and sits on a number of boards, including as co-chair of The Refugee Law Observatory. She has held various teaching positions, including at the University of Oxford, and published widely.

Professor Rodrigo Olivares-Caminal

LLB (Bue), LLM (Warwick) and PhD (London)

Professor Olivares-Caminal specialises in international finance and insolvency law. He has acted as a consultant to central banks and sovereign states. He is the author/editor of seven books and has extensively published in peer-reviewed journals.

Professor Maxi Scherer

MA, PhD (Paris Sorbonne), LLM (Köln)

Professor Scherer has extensive experience with arbitral practice both in civil and common law systems. She has practised as a lawyer for more than 20 years. She has published numerous articles and books in the field of international arbitration and dispute resolution.

Professor Uma Suthersanen

LLB (Hons)[S’pore], LLM [Lond], PhD [Lond], Advocate and Solicitor (Singapore Bar), FRSA

Professor Suthersanen has served as a consultant and given evidence to various UN organisations, governments and legislators, including the European Parliament, the European Commission, and the Governments of Israel and Singapore. She has published widely on the subject of intellectual property law.

Teaching is based at the School of Law's postgraduate centre and the Centre for Commercial Law Studies (CCLS), located in Lincoln's Inn Fields . This area is home to numerous barristers’ chambers and law firms and is a short walk from the Royal Courts of Justice. Our academics and students interact with leading legal professionals, many of whom regularly teach and take part in our seminars and conferences. 

Depending on the modules you choose, you may also have classes at the  Mile End Campus or the University of London's  Institute of Advanced Legal Studies or Charterhouse Square .

Entry requirements

Degree requirements.

Law graduates with a 2:2 honours degree who also have other legal qualifications and/or substantial professional legal experience may also qualify.

Other routes

Non-law graduates with a minimum second class honours degree, that have also obtained a Merit (or 60 per cent) in the Common Professional Examination (CPE) or Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) recognised by the UK professional bodies, may also qualify. Non-law graduates may also be considered on the basis of exceptional professional experience (of at least five years) in a legal area or an area directly related to their programme of study.

Brazil We normally consider the following qualifications for entry to our postgraduate taught programmes: Título de Bacharel / Título de [subject area] or Título de Licenciado/a (minimum 4 years) from a recognised institution. The above grades assumes that the grading scale has a pass mark of 5.

Brunei We normally consider the following qualifications for entry to our postgraduate taught programmes: Bachelor Honours degree from a recognised institution. UK 1st class degree: First Class Honours UK 2:1 degree: Upper Second Class Honours UK 2:2 degree: Lower Second Class Honours

The Copyshop carries a selection of materials used in poster production. These include gloss, matt and crease-resistant fabric which is ideal for transportation.

Our large wide format printer produces high quality prints at A2, A1, A0. Bespoke sizes available up to 900mm wide to any length.

Commissioning Posters

You can submit your file for printing either by email, dependent on file size (max 10 Mb) or USB stick via the CopyShop.

Our preferred file format is Acrobat PDF, although we can also accept files  created in Acrobat PDF, PowerPoint, Publisher, Photoshop, InDesign, Excel and Illustrator from either Mac or PC platforms.

You will need to advise the CopyShop of the size of poster you require and what material you would like it printed on.

Creating artwork for poster print

When creating artwork for a poster you will need to set your document page size to the appropriate dimensions. If you require a standard ‘A’ size poster, set your page size to a minimum of A4, we can then enlarge your artwork to any ‘A’ size.

If designing a custom sized poster you need to scale your artwork in ratio.

Always supply a high resolution PDF with all of your images and fonts embedded.

All images and logos should be of a high quality. Try not to take images or logos from websites as these are low quality screen resolution and will not print clearly and may also infringe upon copyright

You can check the quality of your file by enlarging your PDF on screen to 100% in the view setting. If you see an image is pixelated on screen, this is how it will print. To resolve this, change it for a version of a higher resolution.

Display stands – pop-up system and banners

Roller banners.

Roller banners are ideal for all your events, presentations, seminars etc.

We print onto 850mm wide materials, complete with a stand and carry bag. Should you require a larger size, please contact the CopyShop.

Once you have obtained a stand, we can change the graphic for you so you only have to ever buy the stand once!

The visible size of a single standard roll-up banner is 850mm wide x 2000mm high. However, the artwork area is different. Set your document page size to 850mm x 2000mm at actual size to include a 40mm bleed area at the bottom of the panel. If working in PowerPoint, please set artwork at 25% of your finished banner.

To set your document at 25% size, enter this size into your document setup 212.5mm x 510mm providing all of the elements are vector or 300dpi.

To assist you in producing your research posters, we have provided a series of PowerPoint templates.

They have been designed within the house style of both Queen Mary University of London and Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry.

The layout must not be altered at any time. The space in between the header and footer is the ‘working area’ for your research.

We suggest you:

• Use the Arial font for text on your posters – it will be easier for people to read from a distance
• Avoid using fonts sized below 12 point
• Make sure your images are in-focus and not fuzzy
• Do not use images/logos downloaded from the web, they will pixelate when printed
• Do not overcrowd your poster, remember less is more.

The QMUL Logo should not be altered in size or colour. They must not be moved.

Drop your Partnership logos  into the lower solid bar. Try and keep them all the same size. Place your partnership logos in alphabetical order or in relevance of importance that aided your research.

White Poster Templates – Partners Logos should be used in their corporate colours

Blue and black Poster Templates – Mono reversed (white) logos only to be used

Ask your partner/s to supply the correct .jpeg or .gif image files for your chosen template.

Titles/headings

• Do remember to include your Institute or Centre
• Do insert the title
• Do add authors and where more room is needed reduce the font size
• Do not move the solid bar at the bottom of the template
• Remember to always include your research links

Submitting your poster

You can send your Research Poster to us by email ( [email protected] ), in which case the poster title must be used as the subject title of the email.

Alternatively you can take you file in person to the CopyShop on the Mile End campus.

If paying by a Departmental budget code, this must be submitted at the same time as your artwork.

The CopyShop operates an in-house service for both of these products.

You can purchase plain copy paper form the CopyShop for your own use. You will find the cost very competitive at £2.25 per pack, that’s 500 sheets, whilst contributing to saving the environment.
