Fiat 500 Check Engine Light On: Why and What to Do

The check engine is the most common warning light that appears in the Fiat 500’s instrument cluster.  Well over half of this site’s content is related to solving the various reasons why the check engine light comes on.

Fiat 500 Check Engine Light

The good news is that the check engine light indicates that there are Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) stored in your 500’s computer , which is a very good thing.  DTC’s really help save time determining what is wrong with your car.

The check engine light is often referred to as the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) or Service Engine Soon light.  All three terms are 100% interchangeable.

Common questions, what are trouble codes.

Pulling Trouble Codes

Trouble codes are a number sequence of letters and numbers that correspond with a standardized list of problems that can occur in any vehicle, including the Fiat 500 . Some of them are Fiat specific, while most have the same meaning no matter who made the vehicle.

Common OBD II Codes

The most common of all trouble codes is P0420 (it indicates your Fiat 500’s catalytic converter isn’t scrubbing pollutants efficiently).

Here are some of the other most common codes:

  • P0442 – Small EVAP leak (most commonly fixed by tightening a loose gas cap or replacing it)
  • P0300 – Random misfire (bad ignition coil(s), spark plugs, or spark plug wires).
  • P0128 – Engine running too cool (almost always caused by a thermostat that’s stuck open)
  • P0172 – Air Fuel mixture too rich (there are many causes, including oxygen sensors, leaking injectors, or too much fuel pressure)

The most common codes are related to the emissions system .  Some of them are as easy to fix as replacing your 500’s.  Others require serious diagnostic tests from a repair shop.

How to Pull Trouble Codes on the Fiat 500

How to pull trouble codes from the fiat 500

You can either pull the trouble codes from your 500’s PCM (Powertrain Control Module) yourself, or you can bring your vehicle to a parts store or shop to have it scanned.

Pull Them Yourself

You can put a scan tool into the OBD II port and pull codes out of the diagnostic system yourself.  Any vehicle made for the 1996 model year and up uses the same protocol.

You can usually find the OBD II port underneath the 500’s steering wheel. The exact location of the port is going to depend on what model year you have. If you don’t see it check the owner’s manual or do a quick google image search.

Once your scanner is online, you can pull the codes. You should see a retrieve codes option.

Take Your Carortruck to a Shop or Parts Store

reset fiat engine light

If you don’t have a scan tool, you can take your 500 to the local parts store.  Most of them are happy to pull the codes for you for free .

A lot of auto shops also offer free scan service, but you may find pressured into authorizing whatever repairs they suggest on the spot.

Once you have the codes in hand, you can look them up and determine what’s wrong with your 500.

There are three ways to reset the Fiat 500’s check engine light.  We recommend trying to identify the problem and fixing it before resetting the check engine light.

1. Fix and Wait

The best way to clear the check engine light is to pull the trouble code, identify and fix the issue and then drive your 500 around until the module that threw the code recognizes that the problem is fixed.

Sometimes it can take a few drive cycles for your car’s check engine light to shut down.  Other times, it’ll happen as soon as you fire the vehicle up.  Some folks prefer to clear the code and see if it comes back on

2. Use an OBDII Scanner

You can use an OBDII scanner to turn off your 500’s check engine light.  The catch is, that if you don’t fix the problem, the light will turn on again.

This is done by connecting a scan tool to your 500’s PCM and choosing the “clear codes” option.

Once you’ve identified and fixed the issue, wait for three or four days of normal driving to see if the Check Engine Light turns back on.

If it does not come back on after this period, then you can assume that your Fiat 500 is fixed and the light won’t be turning back on.

3. Disconnect the Battery

If you’ve identified and fixed the issue that caused your 500’s Check Engine Light to come on, resetting the light is as simple as disconnecting and reconnecting the battery. This can be done by unhooking both cables from the battery terminals (negative cable first) and waiting 30 seconds before reconnecting them.

Once the battery is reconnected, your Check Engine Light should be reset and should no longer be illuminated. If the light does come back on again after you reset it, then it means that the issue has not been properly fixed and needs further attention.

Will a Vehicle Fail Inspection With the Check Engine Light On

If you are looking to get your Fiat 500 through emissions and the check engine light is on, it is an automatic fail in almost every State in the Union.  It doesn’t matter why the check engine light is on, it only matters that a code is stored.

Here’s a list of the emissions regulations of each State .

You can’t reset a check engine light to circumvent emissions requirements.  When you reconnect the battery, the OBD II system is going to need several drive cycles to qualify to take an emissions test, which will give it enough time to recognize the issue.

Can You Drive With the Check Engine Light On?

Whether you can drive your 500 with the check engine light on depends on the code(s) that triggered the check engine light.

You certainly can’t drive the Fiat 500 with the check engine light flashing.   A flashing check engine light indicates that there is a serious problem with the engine.

Why is My Check Engine Light Flashing?

A flashing Check Engine Light typically indicates a serious issue with your 500 and should not be ignored.  It usually indicates a catastrophic misfire that can dump raw fuel into the exhaust system, which can damage the catalytic converter and cause backfiring.  Do not drive your car with a flashing check engine light .

Diagnose and clear your check engine light!

Most car owners have encountered the dreaded Check Engine Light (CEL) at some point. If you haven’t, count yourself lucky. This yellow, orange, or red dashboard light means your car’s onboard diagnostic system has detected an engine or emission control system issue.

The Check Engine Light is an essential indicator that warns of anything from minor faults to critical engine failures that can cause an accident or leave you stranded on the side of the road. Repairs can also be as inexpensive as a loose gas cap ($0) or as expensive as a catalytic converter replacement ($2000).

We will teach you how to turn off your check engine light but, keep in mind that ignoring a Check Engine Light will only make matters worse. You’ll have more problems and higher repair bills down the line. It’s important to understand what’s causing the light before you clear it.

If you’d like to know how serious your check engine light is, and what the most likely causes for the light are, check out: What Your Check Engine Light Means | Flashing, Solid, or On & Off .

If you have a scanner (or if you don’t) and you’d like to read your check engine light and get a more exact idea of your particular cars’ problem before resetting the light, check out: How to Read Your Check Engine Light With or Without a Scanner .

If you don’t have an OBD-II scanner and you don’t want to manually read a code (this can be very tedious) → Check out the FIXD sensor , it’s affordable and can help you diagnose your car’s issue. Our device saves people hundreds of dollars at the mechanics’ shop every year by helping them avoid paying for repairs they don’t need. We want to help you too!

With that shameless plug out of the way…

Below, we share four methods for how to clear a Check Engine Light . The first 3 show you how to reset the light without a scanner . In the 4th method we’ll show you how to reset a check engine light with a scanner.

Let’s dive in.

Method 1. Turn the Car On and Off Three Times | 1 Step

Hand turning key in ignition to engine on

The safest way to perform a Check Engine Light reset without a scanner is by turning the vehicle on and off three times. Just start the engine, wait for a second or two, and then turn it off—three times.

Restarting the car 3 times forces the car’s computer to re-evaluate the issue and determine whether the problem still persists. The Check Engine Light should disappear if the issue has been resolved. If the light is still on after, the issue you attempted to fix may not have been resolved, you may have made the wrong diagnosis, or it may be a more serious issue requiring a scanner or battery disconnect to reset.

Method 2. Disconnect and Reconnect the Battery/ECM Hard Reset Technique | 5 Steps

Disconnecting and reconnecting the battery may be the most common way people know how to reset a Check Engine Light without a scanner. This approach usually erases the electronic control unit’s (ECU) memory and removes the Check Engine Light from your dash. It’s less of a restart and more of a hard reset.

Before disconnecting and reconnecting your battery , note that in some cases, doing so may harm the electrical system, especially if done wrong.

For example, disconnecting the battery while the electronics are still on can cause a voltage spike, damaging electronic components like the alternator, voltage regulator, and various control modules.

What’s more, on some newer models, disconnecting the battery may cause the computer to lose its programming or settings, affecting performance, fuel economy, and emissions. You may even need to visit a dealer to have your vehicle reprogrammed. This can be pretty expensive . Be careful to check the manual for your car, check forums, or call a dealership to check if your model is susceptible to this problem, if you aren’t sure.

In general, models from the mid-2000s to the present are more susceptible to having their electronics damaged by improperly disconnecting their batteries. This is especially true for luxury or performance brands, like Audi, Cadillac, or Volvo, which usually have more technology and creature comforts.

Does disconnecting the battery reset the ECU in all cars? No . In some models, it may only clear the radio presets or the clock.

How to Disconnect and Reconnect Your Battery – Hard Reset Your Check Engine Light:

1. ensure the engine is off and the key is out of the ignition. .

Hand removing key from the ignition

Preferably, keep the key far away from the ignition so no one is tempted to start the car while you’re working.

2. Find the battery and disconnect the negative cable (the black cable) with a wrench (usually 8-10mm).

A wrench loosening the bolt holding the clamp on the negative terminal

Warning: While performing this step, be careful not to touch any metal parts. And NEVER place your wrench in a way that might bridge the positive and negative terminals together.

3. Leave the battery disconnected for 15-20 minutes

negative terminal clamp removed from negative terminal and staying off for 15-20 minutes

4. Reconnect the wire to the negative terminal & tighten the bolt.

Reconnect the wire to the negative terminal & tighten the bolt.

5. Start the car

hand turning the key in the ignition to start the engine

If it was a minor problem or you’ve fixed the issue, the Check Engine Light should disappear. If it’s still lit, you may need to visit a mechanic’s shop or try some of the other methods shared in this guide.

Can you reset the check engine light without disconnecting the battery?

If disconnecting the battery is not an option or if you’re uncomfortable doing so, try turning the car on and off 3 times, driving until the light clears (if it’s a minor repair), or using an OBDII scanner to clear the light.

Method 3. Continue Driving and Let it Clear on its Own | 1 Step

car driving 30 miles to reset the check engine light for an easy fix like a loose gas cap

Can a check engine light turn off by itself ? Yes. But, this method is only advised if you already know the reason for the Check Engine Light and the problem is minor.

A loose gas cap is a perfect example of this and luckily enough, it’s one of the most likely causes for a Check Engine Light.  In fact, loose gas caps are the most common reason for a Check Engine Lights in Honda Civics , Honda CR-Vs, and Chevy Equinoxes according to our data.

When your car’s onboard computer system detects a minor issue like this, it may turn on the CEL to notify the driver.

In some cases, once the problem is fixed, the Check Engine Light will turn off on its own by putting a few miles on the odometer.

Just continue driving the car as usual and wait for the Check Engine Light to turn off.

As for how long it takes for a Check Engine Light to reset, anywhere from a few days to several weeks.

How far you have to drive to reset the Check Engine Light may be a better question –  It’s usually no more than 30 miles. If the light doesn’t clear by then, you should definitely look into the problem more closely, your search isn’t over.

If you aren’t certain what is causing your Check Engine Light or if what you fixed was a major issue, it’s typically safer to clear the light with one of the other 3 methods in this article. If you drive to reset your light you won’t know if your car still has an issue as quickly because the Check Engine Light is already on, it can’t warn you of anything. You’re driving blind until the problem clears, the symptoms get worse, and/or the damage gets worse.

Turning the light off first with one of the other 3 methods is a better solution for this reason. If the light comes back on immediately after turning it off you’ll know you still have an issue. If it comes back on after you drive a few miles or goes on and off seemingly at random or only under specific conditions like hard acceleration, it may be an intermittent problem with your engine.

A flashing light is bad, if you’re Check Engine Light flashes, pull over, you should probably get your car towed.  A flashing or blinking light will go on and off very much like how your turn signal flashes. Driving with a flashing light, especially driving a long distance, may seriously damage your engine. One of the most common causes is an engine misfire.

If it is a minor issue like a gas cap and you do decide to drive until the light goes off, watch for signs your car may still have an issue. And, if more problems appear or the light doesn’t turn off, get your light scanned. You can scan it yourself with an affordable scanner like FIXD , have an auto parts store scan your car for free , or visit a mechanic.

Method 4. Resetting the Check Engine Light With A Scanner | 4 Steps

An OBD-II scanner is a handheld diagnostic device that connects to your car’s OBD port and tells you what’s wrong with your car (more or less). If a Check Engine Light appears, an OBD-II scanner can read the error codes that triggered the light and give a detailed report.

Below, we’ll provide a basic rundown of how to clear a Check Engine Light with a scanner.

1. Purchase, Rent, or Borrow an OBD-II Code Scanner

A graphic designed renditions of FIXD and other OBD2 Scanners

You can purchase, rent, or borrow an OBD-II scanner. Some auto parts stores will let you borrow a scanner, others will have an employee scan the car for you but, they may refuse to clear your Check Engine Light.

If you aren’t looking to buy an expensive scanner at an autoparts store or you can’t borrow one to clear the light – check out the FIXD scanner. It connects to your phone and we have a tutorial on how to clear the check engine light with the FIXD app + scanner that makes it super easy.

2. Put the Scanner In the Port Under the Vehicle’s Steering Column (It May Be a Little to the Left or Right)

A scanner being plugged into a car's OBD2 Port

The OBD-II port is usually found under the steering column, either directly in line or slightly to the left or right. Look for a 16-pin, trapezoid-shaped port.

Once you find it, connect the scanner by plugging it in. If there’s a cap, you’ll have to remove it first.

3. Turn the Key to the “On” Position and Press the “Read” Button on the Scanner

Hand checking that the ignition is on but not the engine. Also a OBD2 scanner is reading the car's diagnostics

With the scanner plugged in, turn the car’s key to the “On” position (without starting the engine) and press the “Read” button on the scanner. This will prompt it to read the car’s diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs).

4. Select the “Erase/Clear” On Your Scanner, Then Remove the Key from the Ignition

An OBD2 scanner erasing the DTC and a hand removing a key from the ignition

Once the DTCs are read, select the “Erase/Clear” option to remove the codes from the ECU’s memory. This should turn off the Check Engine Light. Finally, take the key out of the ignition to complete the process.

It’s important to note that knowing how to reset a check engine light doesn’t do any good if the cause hasn’t been resolved. The Check Engine Light will likely reappear after a few engine cycles.

Don’t Clear Your Check Engine Light Without Getting It Fixed Or At Least Scanned

While resetting the Check Engine Light may seem like no big deal, remember that the light is a warning that something is wrong with your car. Clearing a CEL without addressing the underlying issue can lead to more severe problems later.

Driving Could Damage Your Car - Find Out Why Your Check Engine Light Is On

Ignoring a Check Engine Light can result in various problems, some of which can seriously harm your car.

For example, a CEL could indicate bad spark plugs, an issue that can cause engine misfires. This can throw off the entire combustion process and damage engine components if left for too long.

It’s important that when a Check Engine Light appears, you find out why ASAP, before matters worsen. If you can’t fix it right away, you should scan the vehicle for DTCs at the very least, so you know why the CEL appeared and you can determine if it is a minor problem or not. Otherwise you could be on the way to an even more expensive repair or possibly a totaled engine.

What Are the Most Common Causes of A Check Engine Light?

There are many reasons your car might display a Check Engine light. The most common causes include:

  • Loose gas cap
  • Bad spark plugs and wires
  • Low oil and oil pressure
  • Malfunctioning O2 sensor
  • Catalytic converter fault
  • Mass airflow sensor failure
  • Engine overheating
  • Transmission problems
  • Battery issues
  • Vacuum leak
  • Exhaust gas recirculation valve failure
  • Check Engine Light is on for no reason or malfunctioning
  • Failing aftermarket alarm

Whether you get your cars scanned or not, check out:   “The 13 Most Common Causes For A Check Engine Light | How To Diagnose Them” before you reset your CEL.

And if you want to double check your diagnosis and estimate the repair, check out the articles in the table below for the most common DTC codes, repairs, and repair costs for your make & model (based on our scanner data):

If you’re a pro and already have your DTC code and just want the fault code information, check out “ The Most Common Diagnostic Trouble Codes | DTC Directory ” to find your code.

No matter the cause, addressing a Check Engine Light before clearing any trouble codes is the safest way to ensure your vehicle lasts as long as possible.

Clearing Codes Also Clears Diagnostic Data

While diagnosing your vehicle with an OBD-II scanner, note that clearing DTCs and resetting the Check Engine Light also erases any data your car’s computer may have stored. This data can be crucial in diagnosing and repairing the issue causing the Check Engine Light.

When a fault code triggers the Check Engine Light, the car’s computer stores information about the issue. This data can include engine performance, fuel trim adjustments, and emission control system details.

What’s more, if you clear the codes and then later take the car to a mechanic, they may be unable to diagnose the issue without this data. Forcing you or the mechanic to run your engine with a potentially serious issue in order to create new data and diagnose the problem. Why take the risk of damaging your engine twice just to get the same data?

You Can't Hide the Problem Forever, the Light Will Come Back On

While it may be tempting to simply clear any DTCs and ignore why the Check Engine Light came on, you can’t hide the issue forever. Eventually, the CEL will show up again.

How long does it take for the Check Engine Light to come back on after a reset?

A CEL will likely reappear after resetting within a week or two depending on how often and how far you drive. In terms of distance, expect the Check Engine Light to display again within 20 to 50 miles.

Even if you do reset your light and it doesn’t turn back on right away, there is still evidence. While devious car owners may try to reset a light when selling their used or pre-owned vehicles to unsuspecting buyers who neglect to scan the car. This tactic is unlikely to work if the person considering buying the car scans it.

They will likely check for recent resets if they’re savvy or stumble upon the lack of data when checking for pending codes or checking up on maintenance. If your car has little to no data in the ECU, that’s a red flag. A dealerships’ service center will probably catch this on incoming trade-ins too.

Can Clearing The Check Engine Light Can Make Your Car Fail Smog Testing?

Clearing a Check Engine Light can also cause your car to fail a smog check, a check many states require to ensure vehicles meet emissions standards.

Remember that clearing codes to reset a Check Engine Light also erases the stored diagnostic data. Without this data, if you take your car in for a smog check, the technician may be unable to verify that the emission control system is working, leading to a failed test.

They may ask you to drive 100-200 miles before you come back to test your vehicle again.

If after testing again, your car fails an emissions test due to a Check Engine Light issue, it may prevent you from renewing your registration (and possibly driving) until you repair your vehicle and pass smog. Additionally, you may be subject to fines or penalties if you continue driving your vehicle after your registration expires because of a failed emissions test.

FAQs – Turning Off Check Engine Lights, Some Details

Can the check engine light turn off by itself.

Yes, the Check Engine Light can turn off by itself if the problem causing it is resolved. Just note that some issues require manually resetting the CEL with an OBD-II scanner.

The car’s onboard diagnostic system continuously monitors its many systems and components. If it detects that the issue has been taken care of, it will turn the CEL off but it can take days or weeks to reset.

The check engine light should clear by the time you drive 30 miles after fixing the car. However, we only suggest driving to reset the light if you have confirmed your car’s issue is minor (like a loose gas cap) in order to prevent damaging your engine. For more serious issues that require a repair, it is best to reset the light after the car is repaired and before you test drive. If there’s something wrong, the light should come back on during a test drive or some time in the first 20-50 miles.

Why does my check engine light turn on and off intermittently?

Your Check Engine Light might be turning On and Off or flickering (not flashing) for several reasons. It could be a loose or damaged wire or connection in the onboard diagnostic system. Or, a minor fault that only occurs under certain conditions, like when accelerating. The Check Engine Light could also be going on and off due to a bad sensor, spark plug, or filter.

To be clear, the Check Engine Light turning on and off seemingly at random, only under specific conditions, or flickering is different from a flashing light that goes on and off similar to how a turn signal flashes or blinks.

A constant flashing or blinking light indicates a more serious problem. Check out our article “ What Your Check Engine Light Means & 13 Possible Reasons It’s On ” for more information on flashing lights, on and off lights, and what your car is trying to tell you.

Does the check engine light turn off automatically after repair?

In most cases, once the problem causing the Check Engine Light has been repaired, it will turn off on its own.

However, how long it takes varies depending on the vehicle and the specific issue that was fixed. It can take days or weeks to clear but it should clear after driving about 30 miles. If the light doesn’t turn off, an OBD-II scanner can be used to reset it manually.

Do I need a special tool to turn off my check engine light?

You don’t necessarily need a special  tool to reset a Check Engine Light , however, an OBD-II scanner like  FIXD is the best option. Other methods like turning your car on and off three times, disconnecting and reconnecting the battery, or driving until it turns off, are less reliable and may risk damaging your engine (like driving to reset the light) or risk damaging your car’s onboard computer (like disconnecting and reconnecting the battery.

If you must reset your Check Engine Light without a scanner, the safest option is to turn the car on and off 3 times.

Can I disable my check engine light permanently?

You should not disable the Check Engine Light permanently. It is a critical part of your car’s onboard diagnostic system designed to alert you of any engine or emissions control system issues.

Disabling a Check Engine Light permanently, for instance, by removing the bulb, will not solve the root cause of the issue. You’ll just be less aware of the problem.

How to Reset A Check Engine Light in 5 Simple Steps

Magnus Sellén

  • Updated: February 20, 2023

How to Reset a Check Engine Light

Once the Check Engine Light shows up, you know there’s something you must address. The onboard diagnostics (OBD) system analyzes the various car components to ensure everything is working right. If there’s a fault, you will see the warning message appear on your dashboard or information display. That’s when you need to know how to reset the Check Engine Light.

In this guide, we give you some suggestions and discuss why it’s important to fix the underlying problem first. We also touch on what to do if the engine light comes back on and give you some answers to questions that have been bothering you.

Importance Of Fixing The Problem Before Resetting

It’s never wise to ignore what the Check Engine Light is trying to tell you. This system is designed to let you know when there’s a fault, so you can keep your vehicle running as intended. That’s why you want to resolve the problem, so you can turn off the warning light for good.

By ignoring the issue, you face these consequences:

  • Long-term damage could occur if the engine, transmission or other valuable systems aren’t running as intended. For example, if the car needs new spark plugs and you ignore it, you may end up needing an expensive catalytic converter down the road.
  • The car may not pass a safety inspection . Without this necessary inspection, you may not be able to legally drive in your state.
  • Your vehicle may fail emissions testing . Not only is this illegal where it’s required, but it’s also a bad situation for the environment.
  • The car may use more fuel if the engine not running at its best.

Additionally, while the Check Engine Light is on, you won’t know if another problem occurs. Therefore, if you choose to ignore the warning light because it’s just a minor issue, you won’t be notified when something more critical breaks.

How to Reset the Check Engine Light

Use an obd2 scanner, battery disconnection technique, cycling the ignition on and off   , drive your car and let the light go off by itself off itself, pulling fuse, what to do if the engine check light returns.

When the Check Engine Light goes off, you will breathe a sigh of relief, knowing that you’ve repaired the vehicle. Yet, it could return after a few days, especially if the problem wasn’t resolved. If you haven’t used a code scanner up until this point, it’s time to get one.

reset fiat engine light

If you still don’t want to invest in a code scanner, there are plenty of auto parts stores that offer free car diagnostics and will tell you what faults are present. You could also visit a local mechanic and get the codes scanned, although there will be a service charge for this work. Whenever the Check Engine Light is on, it means that there’s a fault read by the computer. You want to get to the bottom of what’s causing it to avoid further damage. Some trouble codes are easy to understand and fix, while others can be much more complicated. That’s why we always recommend using our free online trouble code library when you attempt to fix your vehicle.

Can you reset the Check Engine Light without a scanner?

Yes, but the scanner provides the easiest way of dealing with the Check Engine Light. If you don’t have one, you may be able to disconnect the battery, pull a fuse, run through an ignition cycle or try to drive the vehicle for a few days. However, these methods only work once you’ve repaired what caused the code in the first place.

How long does it take for a check engine light to reset itself?

It depends on the type of vehicle you drive. With some cars, it can take anywhere from 10 to 100 miles of driving before the light resets on its own. The engine computer needs to perform a check on the system that was malfunctioning and notice that it is running normally now. Some systems are checked constantly, while others only have a check occasionally.

Do you have to drive to clear a check engine light?

No, there are other ways to clear the Check Engine Light without driving. If you have a compatible code scanner, you can easily reset the system without going anywhere. Otherwise, you may be able to pull a fuse, cycle the ignition or disconnect the battery for a short time.

How do you reset the check engine light on the gas pedal?

Some vehicles have a reset procedure that involves cycling the ignition and pressing on the gas pedal. To find this method, you want to read the process in your factory service manual. Otherwise, you would be wasting your time trying a process that may not work for your type of vehicle.

Will AutoZone reset the check engine light?

It depends. Many AutoZone locations provide free diagnostics with a compatible code scanner. They will tell you what codes are present and offer some potential fixes to help you save money. However, not all locations will reset the check engine light due to liability reasons. It’s still worth a try if you don’t have a code scanner.

Is a check engine light an easy fix?

It depends on what caused it to come on in the first place. If the gas cap is too loose or damaged, that would be an easy fix. On the other hand, trouble with a lean or rich system can be difficult to troubleshoot. There are also some warnings that lead to expensive repairs, such as when the vehicle needs a new catalytic converter.

After you’ve repaired the fault associated with the diagnostic trouble codes in the computer, it’s time to reset the Check Engine Light. You have several methods for doing this, with the easiest option relying on the code scanner. However, not everyone has a code scanner, so this method isn’t always possible.

With some trial and error, you may be able to find another way to turn off your car’s Check Engine Light. Whether you choose to disconnect the battery temporarily, pull a fuse, cycle the ignition or just keep driving, you may find relief from this annoying warning light. If you can’t get it to turn off, the problem may not be fixed or you may need to visit a professional mechanic.

Resetting check engine light?

  • Add to quote

Is there a way to reset the check engine light on your own for the abarth? I know why mine came on I was installing the gopedal and the clip wasn't in all the way and it triggered the check engine light when I started it. Took gopedal off and tried again but light is still on. Anyway to reset without going to the dealer?

It should turn itself off after a few driving cycles. You can also buy an OBDII port adapter that connects via Bluetooth to an OBDII app. With an app, you'll be able to clear the record of the CEL.

You can buy yourself an inexpensive OBD-II code reader for $20 (and up) which will do the job for you. Well worth the money. I bought a fancier Autel tool for around $80 from a local shop, but you don't need to do that if all you're looking to do is read and reset codes. Beware of fake Autel units on eBay and Amazon. Or if you're planning on running the Torque app, it'll read codes and reset the CEL as well. You'll need an ODB-II to Bluetooth adapter if you're using an Android phone. Not sure about the iPhone/iPod.

Thanks just ordered one from Amazon for iPhone had lots of good reviews so we will see what happens when I get it. I installed the gopedal and definitely night and day difference with throttle response. Can't believe the difference the car just screams. I also have the madness ecu and intake. Hopefully I will be able to get around to install those soon. Want to clear the engine light first in case I have to bring it to the dealer. Any experience with warranty and these aftermarket parts? Does it void all warranty? Will dealer know if I uninstall ecu if it had to ever go in for any warranty issues?

It should reset after a few engine ON/OFF cycles, but having installed a modification it may have to be reset by your local studio

Your check engine light typically comes on when there is a problem with your emission control system or another computer-controlled system in your vehicle. But if you’ve fixed the problem and it’s still on, you may be scratching your head wondering what’s going on. While something may still be wrong with your vehicle, the odds are very high you just need to reset the light, so breathe easy. In this article, we’ll show you the four ways you can reset it.

Things You Should Know

  • Plug an OBD-II scanner into your vehicle’s OBD port and reset it to clear the check engine light.
  • Disconnecting and reconnecting your battery will restart your vehicle’s computer and clear the light.
  • Drive an older vehicle around for a few days after repairs. The light will go off on its own once the computer resets.
  • Turn the ignition to the “on” position 3-5 times and look at your dashboard to spot any error codes or potentially turn off the light.

Step 1 Buy or borrow...

  • Note that vehicles made before the 1990s may not have an OBD port under the dash. If they do, it may be an OBD-I port rather than an OBD-II port, so you may need a different scanner.

Step 2 Plug the scanner into the port under the steering column.

  • The OBD port has 16 small openings for pins that are lined up in 2 rows. It looks a bit like an old VGA port.

Step 3 Turn the key to the “on” position and press the “read” button on the scanner.

  • Some scanners will define or explain the codes while others will not. If you don’t get a definition, look up the code in the owner’s manual or online.

Step 4 Press the

  • Once the OBD system resets (which occurs after a few drive cycles or a certain number of miles, depending on the vehicle), the light will come back on if the problem has not been fixed.

Step 1 Remove...

  • Just FYI, erasing codes by disconnecting your vehicle's battery can also clear out the memory for your radio and other onboard components.

Step 2 Drain any remaining electricity from the capacitor.

  • If you don’t drive all that often, now is the perfect time to take that shopping trip where you need to go way out of town!
  • The mechanic normally resets the computer codes before returning your car to you, but they may have simply forgotten this time.
  • This is most common on older vehicles with more primitive computer systems.

Step 2 Turn the ignition to the “on” position 3-5 times.

  • If the check engine light begins to flash, you have an OBD-I vehicle, which might explain why you’ve had trouble turning the light off. Purchase or borrow and ODB-I scanner to reset the light.
  • If a code pops up on your odometer, write it down and look it up online or share it with your mechanic. This is an error code and your check engine light wasn’t on by accident. [10] X Research source
  • 3 See a mechanic if the light continues to stay on. If you still can’t get the light to turn off after resetting the codes, disconnecting the battery, driving it for a while, or turning the ignition, it’s a sign something is actually wrong. Take your vehicle back to the mechanic to investigate what’s going on. [11] X Research source

About This Article

Jay Safford

Sometimes your check engine light won’t turn off even after you’ve fixed the problem with your vehicle. When that happens, you’ll need to manually reset the light. One option is to turn the ignition on and off 3 times in a row. Then, drive your vehicle around and check to see if the light goes off. If that doesn’t work, turn off your car, pop the hood, and disconnect the positive and negative cables from the battery. Press on the horn for 30 seconds to drain any remaining electricity, then wait 15 minutes before reconnecting the battery cables. Disconnecting the battery like this may reset your car’s electrical system and erase the error code that’s causing the check engine light to stay on. If all else fails, purchase an OBD code scanner and plug it into the OBD port on your vehicle, which should be located under the steering column. Turn on the scanner and wait for it to scan your vehicle for error codes. When it’s finished, you can erase the error codes that appear on the scanner, which will turn your check engine light off. gas caps

A check engine light can indicate a broad spectrum of problems with your 2013 Fiat 500. If you have a flashing check engine light, turn off the engine immediately to prevent potential motor damage. Whereas a steady check engine light may mean you merely need to tighten you gas cap next time you stop in order to reset the service engine soon light. The video above shows how to locate the on board diagnostics OBD plug location on your 2013 500, how to read the trouble codes and how to reset or clear the check engine light using a scanner on your 500.

Is it OK to drive with a check engine light on? Intermittent Check Engine Light: If the check engine light on your 2013 500 is not steady, try to take note of the conditions when this happens. For example, does it happen when you accelerating, driving on the highway or does it appear at low speeds? This will help your mechanic evaluate the issue. Steady Check Engine Light: If your check engine light is on every time you operate your 500, you need to have it checked as soon as possible, especially if you notice performance problems or unusual noises. Flashing Check Engine Light: If your check engine light is flashing, stop driving your 500 and have it towed to your nearest mechanic – a blinking check engine light means you probably have a very serious problem with your car and you risk ruining your engine by driving it. If you are unsure about what your diagnostic trouble codes mean after finding the 500 OBD port location and scanning the codes; have your 500 diagnosed by a professional automotive technician.

How Do You Reset the Check Engine Light on Your Car?

T he check engine light (CEL) comes on when the on-board diagnostics second generation system (OBD II) detects an emission system problem. And yes, you can legally turn off the CEL yourself. But is that wise?

After almost 50 years in the auto repair industry, I know that nothing panics a driver — including yours truly — more than the CEL coming on, and the fear of unexpected/expensive car repairs. I've discussed CEL troubles with my friends, family and customers for years.

OBD II and emission control systems increase fuel efficiency while reducing smog . Unfortunately, too many drivers hope the CEL will magically turn itself off. I've explained, more times than I can count, that ignoring a CEL can lead to costly repairs. Here's what you need to know.

What Are Readiness Monitors?

Your vehicle's engine control module (ECM) includes readiness monitors, a self-diagnostic software program that verifies the OBD II system is operating as designed. Depending on make, model, year and equipment, a vehicle can have up to 12 readiness monitors.

Using thousands of pieces of sensor data per second, including engine and vehicle speed and distance, the software identifies problems with your emissions system and establishes readiness monitor status: Ready or Not Ready .

  • Ready means the self-test determined the emissions system is working properly.
  • On 2001 and newer models, if more than one readiness monitor remains in Not Ready status, the CEL illuminates and your vehicle will fail emissions inspection . Not Ready doesn't mean there's an actual system or part failure. A CEL can be caused by a dead battery or a loose gas cap.

What Are Trouble Codes?

The OBD II system stores diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) in the ECM. DTCs help identify which offending part, component or system causes the CEL to illuminate. You'll need a scan tool to read DTCs.

How To Reset the Check Engine Light

The simplest way to turn off a CEL is to find and fix the problem. However, sometimes the CEL remains on after repairs are made, even for the pros. Here's what to do:

Turn off the CEL, pre-1995

  • Disconnect the battery . Remove the negative (-) cable first, then remove the positive (+) cable, wrapping the cable terminals with electrical tape.
  • With the battery cables removed, cycle the ignition switch ON and OFF three to five times, then hold the horn button for 60 seconds to power down the ECM .
  • Wait 15 to 30 minutes before reconnecting the battery cables: Positive (+) first, negative (-) last.

Turn off the CEL OBD II, 1996 and newer

  • Try the steps listed above.
  • Purchase a scan tool that can read readiness monitor status, clear DTCs and turn off the CEL following on-screen menus or prompts. A scan tool cannot reset readiness monitors.
  • Reset the readiness monitors by completing a drive-cycle (see below). A drive-cycle helps the ECM confirm and verify the emissions systems are working correctly.

How To Complete a Drive-Cycle To Reset the Check Engine Light

Although it's tricky and can be time-consuming, doing this yourself will save hundreds of dollars in labor and diagnostic fees.

Follow these steps to complete a generic OBD II drive-cycle. Check your owner's manual or online to locate the specific steps for your vehicle:

  • Let the vehicle sit overnight. This allows air and coolant temperatures to stabilize.
  • Connect a scan tool to the diagnostic link connector .
  • Check monitor status and DTCs.
  • Start the engine, turn the air conditioning ON (if equipped) until engine temperature reaches at least 160 degrees. Do you know what  CC means in an engine ?
  • Confirm the fuel tank is between one-quarter and three-fourths full.
  • Turn the air conditioning off.
  • At 25% throttle, accelerate up to 50 to 60 mph (55 mph preferred) for three to five minutes. Better scan tools can read throttle position, or just push the gas pedal down about a quarter of the way. If you are using a scan tool, take a helper with you to monitor any scan tool readings while you focus on driving.
  • Accelerate to and maintain 50 to 60 mph (55 mph preferred) for three to five minutes.
  • Without using the brake or clutch, slow down to 20 mph.
  • Speed up to 55 to 60 mph at 75% throttle by slowly pushing the gas pedal down about three-quarters of the way. Maintain that speed for five minutes.
  • Stop the vehicle and let it idle for 10 seconds.
  • Turn the key off and wait two minutes for the ECM to power down.

Even if the CEL is off, repeat Steps 5 through 10 if readiness monitor status doesn't reset. The pros don't always get this right the first time, either.

Folks, I've just fitted an new MAF meter with sensor into my jtd 115 04 plate. Is there a way of turning off the yellow warning light on the dashboard which came on as a result of me unplugging the old defective one without taking it to my local garage? I've tried leaving it on MAR1 for 90 secs, turning off for 90 secs then running idle for 5 mins (as posted on here) but light still on. The new one is spot on, by the way, got it from maf-shop.com which is in Germany. The replacement part is a genuine Bosch one exactly the same as the one I replaced. Got it for £80 including delivery, think their prices have gone up a bit for the new year but the ones I tried to source form UK were over £200 for the same part. Would highly recommend them.

Not exactly answering your question but I don't get this light on my 03 jtd 115.... Are you sure it was this that caused it? Good info on the relatively cheap replacement MAF. Have you fiatecuscan?? ... This would be the easiest way I reckon to find what fault code is causing the light. Marty.

leave the battery off for an hour that should clear it

You may well find that if the original fault is cleared, that the engine management light will go out after a certain number of starts (5-10). The original fault code stays logged in the ECU, though.

The 5 series is not 'modular' the 7 series is. The JP701 EU702 US703 FR704 are essentially the same thing with different logo's on the front and different modules installed. The EU702 is the only one worth spending money on. The flash program & the 17 EEPROM data flash[es] are worth having. The EU702 can be overwritten for example you could take off the GM models data and replace with the Japanese models data. If you are careful NEVER to save any 'live' information you can install three modules on the EU702 at a time, which will give deep / specific model information. An alternative Pcode only scan can be had for £2.10 on an android 'smartphone' As is the case some maker specific info is never available on the Autel, one example the Chrysler won't give 'air bags' 'transmission' etc.

Agreed .. .. I have accss to Ethos / Solus etc, I get as much useful information from the 702 as I do from a £13.000 Snap-On. A useful 'live' freebie for a mobile phone or pad can be substantially improved by paying £2 for the .

Apologies if this is a long story. After my mother in Michigan gifted my daughter her 2001 VW Beetle with 48,000 miles on it, my daughter and I traveled from California to pick up the car. We headed out on Thursday morning for the 5 day drive back home to Oakland California, taking a northern route to stop by Badlands National Park and Mt Rushmore. By Saturday evening, we arrived in Cheyenne WY, where we spent the night. After looking at the weather forecast for the Sierra mountains, we decided to pick up some chains for our tires at the local Walmart in Laramie, WY, before continuing on our trip. On Sunday morning, as we got close to Laramie on I-80, the engine started sputtering, misfiring and losing power. The EPC light kept flashing and it was clear something was wrong. I was able to make it to the local Walmart parking lot, though the car stalled a few times on the way there. After I parked, I was unable to generate any power beyond idling, and the car continued to stall. I consulted yelp and google to find a local mechanic, but none of the local shops were open on Sunday. I saw a listing for Rise High Auto Repair, which described itself as a mobile mechanic company. I called the number and spoke with the proprietor, Chris on the phone. He said he could be there in 35 minutes and would diagnose the problem for $125 ($95 diagnostic fee and $35 travel fee) in the Walmart parking lot and that the $95 diagnostic fee would count against the repair cost if we opted to have him repair the car. When Chris arrived in his mobile truck, he was incredibly friendly and he got straight to work. He recommended replacing the spark plugs and wires, thinking that would address the issue. After finishing the repair and clearing the codes, he suggested I drive around in the parking lot a few times to reset the computer to see if the repair addressed the issue. However it did not. I made it about 200 feet and the initial problem persisted. He said he thought it could be an issue with the throttle, which he said he could clean, but if it needed replacement, I'd need to spend a couple of days in Laramie, because it was unlikely any of the local part shops would have the necessary part in inventory. He took apart the throttle, cleaned it out, and reset the computer. We decided to take our chances and see if we could make it to Salt Lake City and then Elko NV, which was about 625 miles away. The car ran well all the way to Elko. We got to Elko around 10:30 pm, and I noticed I had a text from Chis checking in on us to see how the trip was going. On Monday morning, we continued our trip back to Oakland and arrived safely with no further issues. Again, I had a text from Chris on Monday, to see if we made it home ok. All told we drove over 1100 miles. I can't say enough about Chris. First, he was incredibly competent. I could tell from speaking with him that he is extremely knowledgeable about automobile repairs. Watching him work, I felt like I was watching a surgeon. He made all of the repairs in the Walmart parking lot and he worked efficiently and thoroughly to ensure that he was able to repair the car. It was cold and windy on this particular Sunday and he invested over 4 hours of his time fixing our car outside. Finally, he was incredibly honest and kind. He cared enough to check in on us until we got home, something he really didn't need to do. I unequivocally recommend using Chris and his company if you find yourself in Laramie WY.
