University Library and UMI offer Dissertation Express
Taking a cue from the Old West, albeit doing things a little more quickly, the University Library now offers “Dissertation Express.”
Individuals who need copies of dissertations now can get them in approximately two to three days, for only $15.
In the past, if you wanted a dissertation, you first had to visit a library and find out what library owned the dissertation. Then, if it was available, you’d have to borrow a microfilm copy, which might take several weeks to receive. Or you could contact University Microfilms Inc. (UMI) and purchase a copy, at approximately $35 and up to four weeks for delivery.
Thanks to a joint project of the Library and UMI, dissertations now are scanned on demand and then transformed from microfilm to digital text and printed unbound on 8 1/2 x 11 paper.
“The reproduction quality is excellent, including graphic material, and the response has been phenomenal,” says Wendy Lougee, director of the Digital Library Program. “We’ve done very basic advertising and had several hundred requests. And people are very pleased with the quality.”
Lougee says the next phase of the project will take the process at least one step further—sending digital images over the network to printers located on campus.
“This pilot project offers an attractive model for information delivery, Lougee notes, ‘just-in-time’ from publishers.”
Dissertation searchers also have access to Dissertation Abstracts International via the Internet through the “Ulibrary” gopher to help speed the search process.
Sample copies of digitally printed dissertations are available at the Graduate Library Reference and Information Center, the Interlibrary Loan Office (Room 106, Hatcher Library North) or the Engineering Library Reference Desk.
Express Dissertation orders can be placed at any University Library reference desk, and payment can be made by check (payable to UMI), money order or University account. Those using U-M accounts can place their orders via e-mail to [email protected].

Submitting Your Thesis or Dissertation Electronically
The following guidelines, resources, and templates are here to support graduate students as they format their theses and/or dissertations for ProQuest submission, which is required for graduation.
Please direct all questions about Electronic Thesis and Dissertation (ETD) submissions that are not addressed here to your school-level ETD contact listed in the righthand sidebar.
The University of Kansas requires that all students whose degree programs require the defense of a thesis or dissertation must publish their research in order to fulfill degree requirements. The publication requirement is satisfied by submitting the Electronic Thesis or Dissertation (ETD) to UMI/ProQuest. You may review the policies governing master's theses and doctoral dissertations for more information.
Your thesis or dissertation should meet all of the formatting requirements laid out in KU's ETD Formatting Guidelines.
Please note: The final document you submit electronically must contain only your thesis or dissertation and the scholarly apparatus as described in these formatting guidelines. It must not include any prior publications or other scholarly or creative works.
Before you submit your thesis or dissertation, make sure you have gathered the following:
- The Subject Category or Categories under which your research falls— Click to view ProQuest's list of Subject Categories
- Between 6 and 8 keywords to be used as search terms within ProQuest
- Your abstract
- Any documentation of copyright permissions you have been granted, if necessary
- Your credit card, if you would like ProQuest to file your copyright on your behalf (optional)
- ETD Release Form (pdf)
- ETD Release Form for Creative Writing MFA/PhD students ONLY (pdf)

Dissertations and Theses
The dissertation is the hallmark of the research expertise demonstrated by a doctoral student. It is a scholarly contribution to knowledge in the student’s area of specialization. By researching and writing a dissertation, the student is expected to demonstrate a high level of knowledge and the capability to function as an independent scholar.
A thesis is a hallmark of some master’s programs. It is a piece of original research, generally less comprehensive than a dissertation, and is meant to show the student’s knowledge of an area of specialization.
Document Preparation
PhD and master’s students are responsible for meeting all requirements for preparing theses and dissertations. They are expected to confer with their advisors about disciplinary and program expectations and to follow Graduate School procedure requirements.
The Graduate School’s format review is in place to help the document submission process go smoothly for the student. Format reviews for PhD dissertations and master’s theses can be done remotely or in-person. The format review is required at or before the two-week notice of the final defense.
Access and Distribution
Ohio State has agreements with two organizations— OhioLINK and ProQuest/UMI Dissertation Publishing —that store and provide access to Ohio State theses and dissertations.
Examinations
Graduate degree examinations are a major milestone in all graduate students’ pursuit of their graduate degree. Much hinges on the successful completion of these examinations, including the ability to continue in a graduate program.
The rules and processes set by the Graduate School ensure the integrity of these examinations for graduate students, the graduate faculty, and for Ohio State.
Final Semester
During your final semester as a graduate student there are many activities that lead up to commencement and receiving your degree. Complete the final semester checklist and learn more about commencement activities.

UT Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Permanent URI for this collection https://hdl.handle.net/2152/11
This collection contains University of Texas at Austin electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs). The collection includes ETDs primarily from 2001 to the present. Some pre-2001 theses and dissertations have been digitized and added to this collection, but those are uncommon. The library catalog is the most comprehensive list of UT Austin theses and dissertations.
Since 2010, the Office of Graduate Studies at UT Austin has required all theses and dissertations to be made publicly available in Texas ScholarWorks; however, authors are able to request an embargo of up to seven years. Embargoed ETDs will not show up in this collection. Most of the ETDs in this collection are freely accessible to all users, but some pre-2010 works require a current UT EID at point of use. Please see the FAQs for more information. If you have a question about the availability of a specific ETD, please contact [email protected].
Some items in this collection may contain offensive images or text. The University of Texas Libraries is committed to maintaining an accurate and authentic scholarly and historic record. An authentic record is essential for understanding our past and informing the present. In order to preserve the authenticity of the historical record we will not honor requests to redact content, correct errors, or otherwise remove content, except in cases where there are legal concerns (e.g. potential copyright infringement, inclusion of HIPAA/FERPA protected information or Social Security Numbers) or evidence of a clear and imminent threat to personal safety or well-being.
This policy is in keeping with the American Library Association code of ethics to resist efforts to censor library resources, and the Society of American Archivists code of ethics that states "archivists may not willfully alter, manipulate, or destroy data or records to conceal facts or distort evidence." Please see UT Libraries' Statement on Harmful Language and Content for more information.
