20 talent ideas for your next pageant.

Dance, vocal, playing an instrument, these are the typical ideas that come to mind for talents in a pageant, but not the only performances you can do.

Performing a monologue: This could be something original or from a movie or on-stage production that you love!

Reciting an original poem: Sharing something original gives judges more information about you, it's a great opportunity to connect with the judges and the audience.

Speed painting: This is honestly one of my favorites! The presentation is what makes all the difference, you don't just want to paint fast, but really engage with the crowd.

Gymnastics routine: This is so entertaining, make sure you know if you need to provide a mat or not if you need one!

Cultural dance: a dance from your culture is an amazing way to share more about you to the judges.

Trade skill (like styling hair in 90 seconds): Sharing a skill is so entertaining, let the judges know what you can do!

Ventriloquism or puppetry: Not super uncommon, but not on every pageant stage. If you are talented with puppetry or ventriloquism this is a great chance to show it off.

Cheerleading routine: 90 seconds isn't that much less than the usual 2 minutes and 30 seconds from a cheer routine. Put together a cheer or maybe a short dance, show off your jumps and if you have any tumble skills that too!

Magic show: Amaze the judges with some magic, it's all about the presentation so have fun and make some magic.

Karate or other martial arts demonstration: show off your martial arts skill, maybe even break a board, I know that's always fun to see on a pageant stage.

Baton twirling : Baton twirling is often what's thought about as a pageant talent but I personally don't see it often on a pageant stage, and it's one of my favorite talents to watch.

Rollerskating routine: Pick some fun music and put together a routine, like one would do an ice skating routine! I have yet to have seen this on a pageant stage, and would love to!

Other demonstration like CPR or a science experiment: I have seen this quite a few times, and it's so great to learn about a contestant's talents in an entertaining way.

Juggling: make sure you do it well before you do it on stage, but it is quite impressive when you can do it!

A unique hula hoop routine: this talent is one of the most entertaining to watch, it works well with multiple hula hoops, some great music, and a lot of practice!

Show off athletic tricks (like juggling a soccer ball)

Riding a unicycle: Quite a cool talent, if you know how to ride a unicycle this is the time to show it off!

Aerial silk acrobatics: I have only seen this once, but it was quite impressive!

Skateboarding routine: This is pretty rad, and quite impressive, show off your skateboarding skills if you've got them!

Comedy: A standup routine can be great, but make sure it's appropriate, and not just a bunch of jokes you read online. Make it original, make it about you and your experiences,

When taking photos at a pageant, there are some tips you should know. This guide lists 7 insider tips for amazing pageant photography.

Whether you’re prepping for your first pageant or you’ve already been a participant for years, it’s vital to get amazing results from your photography session.

From headshots to promo pictures, your pageant photography should stand out from the crowd.

Read on for a list of seven insider tips that will help you get amazing results when you get in front of the camera.

1. Showcase the Real You

Your hair and makeup should be stunning for pageant headshots, but it shouldn’t be so over the top that you’re unrecognizable. Try to keep your makeup natural and avoid going overboard when it comes to colors and hairstyles.

The goal of a headshot is to show off your beauty without looking overdone. Highlight your best features and make sure that they really stand out in your photos.

If your pageant photos don’t look anything like you, you’re not really representing who you are. Of course, you want to look gorgeous, but just be aware that your look shouldn’t be too heavy on the makeup and hair that you end up looking like someone else.

2. Choose a Pro For Your Pageant Photography

It’s tempting to ask your mom or your best friend to take your pageant portraits. However, a professional is best when it comes to taking these absolutely vital shots.

Top 5 Tips To Choose Winning Pageant Platform Ideas

One of the most exciting parts to starting your journey to the crown is making a list of pageant platform ideas and inspiring change in your community through your voice.

Tip 1: Research Your Beauty Pageant System

The first step to competing in any pageant system, is to read and understand the pageant system mission statement.   As discussed in How to Develop Your Beauty Pageant Platform , there are certain pageant systems (or universes) that were created around specific social causes.   If the answer is no, skip to Tip 2.   If this answer is yes, keep reading for some helpful guidance! Below are a few examples:

“The spirit of service is at the very heart of the Miss Volunteer America program.” Miss Volunteer America Official Website   

Pageants that are based on community service will often require a well-developed pageant platform and proven track record of service in your community.  These pageants are ideal for candidates who are active volunteers in their community.

“Since 2001, the Miss Earth organization has created a platform for women and girls to experience the glamour of the beauty pageant industry while making an impact on our most pressing environment issues around the globe.” Miss Earth USA Official Website

The Miss Earth organization places an emphasis on issues impacting the environment.  Contestants who choose to compete (and succeed) in the Miss Earth USA pageant system select a platform under the large umbrella of environmental issues.  

Competing in a pageant that has a set theme or social cause can be helpful if you do not know where to start in your platform search.   One challenge is narrowing down the broad topic area to a very specific problem or issue—preferably a unique sub-topic that is not likely to be duplicated by another contestant.  In these cases, the #CrownCodex recommends that contestants look to their communities for inspiration on a sub-issue very specific to you and your geographical region.  

Tip 2: Make a List of Issues or Social Causes That Inspire You

Take a moment to write down each and every social cause or issue that interests you. The topics can be as broad as climate change or as specific as student access to a particular item/resource in your local school.  The key is to start the brainstorming process and to create a running list of possible platforms.  This is probably one of the most important parts to your pageant platform development—finding your passion.

This process works best when you allow a few days in between starting the list, building the list, reviewing the list, and finally picking your platform from the list. Why should you allow a certain period of time to pass?  It’s easy to get excited about an idea or project when it first comes to mind! 

Once a few days (or even hours) have passed, you will find that the idea that seemed perfect suddenly isn’t the best fit for you or your pageant system. Remember, your pageant platform is an ongoing project that you will need to build not only for the months leading up to the pageant, but also, in the year of your service should you win the title.  You want to be sure that you pick platform that you genuinely care about and can see yourself working, researching, and volunteering to support for a long period of time.

Tip 3: Develop Clear and Tangible Goals to Address Each Issue

Goal setting is important.  One of the best ways to goal set for success is by establishing SMART goals.  The acronym smart stands for (i) specific (ii) measurable, (iii) achievable, (iv) relevant, and (v) time based. 

• Specific .  A contestant or title holder should write down the “what, why, and how” of your goal.   The level of detail will vary based upon whether you are very familiar with your topic area or you’re just getting your feet wet and learning about what opportunities exist within your chosen platform.
• Measurable .   How will you monitor your service and contributions to your community?  Your platform is an opportunity to show the judges that you can identify an issue, address the issue, explain what impact your actions had, and inspire others to do the same if selected for the title.
•   Achievable .  Goals should be within the realm of imagination. Setting goals that are too ambitious can discourage you during your journey to the crown. The key to maintaining consistency is to stay motivated.
• Relevant.  Goals should be aligned with the purpose of your journey to the crown, the pageant system, or in support of service to a community as a titleholder.
• Time Bound .  Try to set a timeline for when you would like to achieve these specific goals. For example, would you like to achieve the goal by one month before the pageant date or by the end of your reign?

Tip 4: Make a List of Community Partners or Organizations In Your Community

Planning where to start your advocacy can be very confusing when beginning your volunteer journey in your community.  Community partners and other established organizations serve an important role in your service journey because they can be your starting point for (i) platform education, and (ii) outreach opportunity.

No one expects you to be an expert in your chosen platform area when you begin your volunteer journey, however, as a titleholder it is very important to be knowledgeable in your platform and the social cause you champion.   Therefore, education is an important piece to having an impactful service journey. There are many ways that you can learn about your platform topic area, but one #CrownCodex pageant hack is to work with the community organization that has professionals and volunteers who have already been working in this chosen area for years. Many community organizations are excited and eager to teach you about the work that they do and how others can get involved.

In addition to educational opportunities, most community organizations have outreach programs already in place and connections with people in the community who are in need.  (Note: an outreach program is inactivity or event hosted by a community organization that usually provides some sort of service, education, or distribution of resources.) 

By working with the community organization, you may not need to set up your own volunteer projects in the community because you can join volunteer projects that are already existing. While it’s an important to leave your market in your community, you don’t want to duplicate services of organizations around you. If one (or more) of your platform ideas can be supported by a community organization, that makes the platform idea much higher on your final rank list.

Tip 5: The Formul a – Winning Pageant Platform Ideas

Smart goal potential + community partners = rank / passion.

Finally, the moment you have been waiting for!  Once you have a list of your platform ideas, your SMART Goals, and a list of community partners that can be potential partners. . . it is now time to rank your platform options.  First, rearrange your list so that the platform idea with the most community partners/organizations is at the top and the platform idea that has the least community partners/organizations are at the bottom. 

Now your list shows the pageant platform ideas that will require the most work at the bottom and the platform idea that may require the least amount of work at the top.  Remember, an established community partner means that you may have less work to do because your community partner may already have education, resources, and connections to help you carry out your platform.

Warning:  easy doesn’t always mean the best!  Sometimes your platform is so unique that no one has had an opportunity to try and address it in your community! This does not mean that the platform idea should not be chosen, it simply means that the platform idea will require more work. Take a moment to think about how much time you have to devote to your pageant platform development compared to the other obligations in life (school, family, significant other). 

Second, look at the SMART goals listed for each of the pageant platform ideas.  Think about your timeline (“How long until the pageant?”) and your impact (“What can you actually accomplish during this timeline?”).   Rank your pageant platform ideas from the shortest timeline and the most impact at the top and the pageant idea that would likely take the longest to accomplish at the bottom. 

Now you have two lists.   List 1:  Community Partners List.  List 2:  SMART Goals List.

Put the lists side by side.  The pageant platforms ideas that make the top 3 (or 5 if your list is long) on both lists should now be your “Final List.”  Looking at your Final List, choose the topic that you are most passionate about.   Your platform is the cornerstone of your pageant preparation.  Choosing a platform is a very personal choice because the contestant commits herself to working in this particular area over the course of her pageant preparation and during her reign. 15 Pageant Tips To Win Your Competition (For Beginners Too)

Competing in a beauty pageant, a school pageant, a swimsuit pageant, or even a fitness competition can be a life-changing experience. But to confidently slay your competition (especially as a beginner or if it’s your first pageant), it helps to have some winning insight.

Have an upcoming pageant competition? Worry not beauty. The following pageant tips and tricks will help you place among the top contestants and perhaps win that pageant!

Pageant tips from my own experience.

At the age of 15, I competed in my very first pageant and won the title of Miss Teen Florida Caribbean. I’ve since competed in a number of beauty pageants including on the international level. In nearly all of these competitions, I’ve place among the top 2, snagged the title and crown, and/or received top sectional prizes.

You can bet that over the years I’ve learned a thing or two about competing successfully in a pageant. To help you along on your own journey, I’ve put together some pageant tips I hope you’ll find insightful.

1. Stay on top of things and take initiative.

In addition to having a queen who is beautiful on the inside and out, organizers also want a queen that they don’t have to babysit and who will take initiative in different situations. Make sure you know the agenda for the competition and follow it diligently. This means getting your application and forms in on time, being punctual for all events (including practice), and communicating effectively with the organizers at all times.

Additionally, it is your responsibility to know the pageant’s rules inside and out —what you can wear, how long you have for the interview, what is allowed and not allowed throughout the competition, etc.  If you don’t know something, ask the pageant director who is there to help you along with the other contestants!

2. Get your mindset on point.

Having a positive mindset is perhaps one of the best pageant tips to embrace!  Yes, some competitors are indeed gorgeous and have outstanding resumes but that doesn’t mean they have it in the bag. Oftentimes, it not the prettiest or most accomplished girl that walks away with the crown…

Believe in yourself and your ability to succeed.  Don’t think negatively about what might happen, you will only be sabotaging your efforts from the very beginning.  If you don’t believe in yourself, why should anyone else? Furthermore, no matter what the outcome, there is always an opportunity to learn from the experience, gain knowledge and/or make a new friend or two.

3. Get your looks on point — teeth and skin.

Truth be told, you don’t have to be extraordinarily gorgeous to win a pageant — even a beauty pageant. Keep in mind that the judges and organizers are likely looking for a well-rounded woman who is the total package from the inside out. With that said, it is still very important that from head to toe you carry yourself well and that you look your personal best.

A part of presenting yourself well and looking your personal best is paying attention to the details. Details such as your body, your skin, your nails, and your teeth.

With all the free resources available on Youtube, in 2022 and beyond, there literally no excuse to not know how to contour or apply lashes.  If you are new to makeup, learn the basics before competing. Eye makeup can make or break your look and it’s definitely worth taking some time to practice beforehand.

Planning to wear fake lashes for your big day? You should definitely practice applying those babies before the show too!  It’s much better to spend a few hours practicing and perfecting your look than getting just minutes before you’re about to walk on stage.

As for hair, I recommend religiously binge-watching all the hair gurus and wig gurus on Youtube to learn some great tips and tricks. One little hack I wish I would have known during my pageant days is turning a lace front wig into a V part wig . I’ve been doing this recently with synthetic wigs like this one on Amazon , and OMG, gamechanger!

5. Plan your wardrobe details for every preliminary event.

You will need just the right combination of outfits to wear throughout the competition, so it’s important that you plan them strategically. During the course of many pageant competitions, you will participate in different preliminary events. When I competed in Miss Grand International, for example, we met with dignitaries, visited with sponsors, and the like.

A pageant tip that I found really helpful was to pre-plan my outfit and organize my outfit for every single event and section them together in my suitcase. This included shoes, accessories, even how I’d wear my hair and make-up for each outfit too.

6. Save money by renting your wardrobe (as opposed to buying).

Having a chic and fabulously stylish wardrobe can be quite costly and not something that everyone has in their budget. Especially if you want, of course, high-quality items that fit well and look great on you too. One of the best beauty pageant tips for first-time competitors on a budget is to rent at least some of your wardrobe.

To avoid putting yourself into a major expense, one invaluable beauty pageant tip I recommend using a clothing rental subscription service such as Rent the Runway to get high-quality stylish pieces for a fraction of the cost. In my last competition, I used Rent the Runway to borrow a beautiful bright pink two-piece pant set for my preliminary interview. I also used the service to get all my outfits for the different preliminary events.

7. Keep your wardrobe classy and modest.

Although we live in a very casual culture in terms of how we dress day to day, how we speak to one another, and even how we conduct ourselves as women… a pageant is certainly the time and place to step up your game!

Unless during a pageant you’re specifically asked to dress down, jeans and sneakers should not be in your wardrobe whatsoever. Every time you step out during your pageant competition, you should be dressed your very best from head to toe.

Oh, and keep it modest too — if it’s a bit too tight, questionably short, or you’d wear it to a nightclub, think twice if it’s appropriate for a pageant.

8. Practice your on stage perfermance with your final night wardrobe.

Stage presentation is an aspect of competition that can really set you apart from the other girls. It’s the way a girl commands all eyes on her with the confidence she exudes and the sparkle in her eyes.

A great way of recognizing stage presence is by watching video clips of past competitions and watching for that girl you just can’t take your eyes off of. Watch the girls in the top 20 in the swimsuit and evening gown segment of the competition. Among some former pageant contestants with fabulous stage presence are Dayana Mendoza (Miss Universe 2008, Winner – watch here ) Yendi Philips (Miss Universe 2010, First Runner Up – watch here ), Zozibini Tunzi (Miss Universe 2019, Winner – watch here ).

9. Choose pageant shoes that you can confidently walk in.

One of the best pageant tips to kill it on stage during your competition is to wear shoes that you can really strut your stuff in. The right pageant shoes will allow you to walk with the utmost confidence throughout every step of your competition.

I put together a list of the best pageant shoes that I personally recommend . I’ve included a few beauty pageant tips on shoes and choosing the right ones for you too.

10.Practice for your interview.

The pageant interviews (both with the judges and on stage) are perhaps the most important segments to win a pageant. This is where the crown and title are often won or lost. Because even in a “beauty” pageant competition, the judges and organizers want a queen that is likable, well-spoken, and attractive on the inside and out.

A great way to prepare for your pageant interviews is by simply practicing. To help you along, I put together a pretty extensive list of the top pageant interview questions and a few beauty pageant tips you can use to practice for your interview.

11. Try different hair styles prior to competition.

Pageant hair is a very important aspect of your entire look during a competition. A helpful pageant tip is to practice different hairstyles on yourself before the final night to help you decide what will be your final pageant do.

While big bouncy curls are typical “pageant hair”, that doesn’t mean that you need to wear your hair this way. In fact, in my opinion, it may even be a little outdated. Instead of following the crowd, choose instead to wear a hairstyle that best suits you. That may mean pin-straight hair with a middle part. That may mean a sleek chignon bun. That may even mean an afro like Davina Bennett (Miss Universe 2017, First Runner Up) or no hair at all like Zozibini Tunzi (Miss Universe 2019, Winner).

12. Know how to do your own hair and make up.

For many competitions, professional hair and makeup artists are often on-site for the final night of the competition. This however can not be depended on. Because the truth is, even for big-budget competitions, many times the organizers will work with beauty schools to provide make-up services for the contestants.

While the makeup school students or graduates may be very talented, you also want to be able to handle yourself in the event that they’re not. And with all the chaos backstage sometimes there’s not enough time to get everyone’s makeup done perfectly to their liking. You always want to make sure that you can put yourself together if need be.

13. Make friends with your competitors.

Even if you go on to compete in other pageant competitions, you will never again compete with the same group of girls. There’s no need to be bitchy or catty with the other girls — it’s also a bad look. Work together if need be. Help each other. It won’t put you in a worse off position to help another girl. And it’s not uncommon at all to meet lifelong friends in a pageant competition.

14. The organizers and judges are always watching.

Even when you think no ones is watching because you’re not on stage or you’re in an informal environment, always act as if the judges and organizers are watching — because trust me, they are.

A great pageant tip to keep in mind is to always carry yourself like the queen. The same is true for how you conduct yourself on social media.

15. Have fun!

Besides the fact that competing in a pageant will help you improve yourself inside and out, it’s also meant to be a fun experience. Yes, it’s a competition, but the fact is there can only be one winner. And whether or not that is you, you want to walk away having learned, perhaps made some friends, and created fond memories.

With that said, take the competition seriously, but also don’t forget to have fun and enjoy yourself!

I have been a judge for many years. Often, I am looking for great posture on and off of the stage. I appreciate a contestant that speaks loudly and confidently without pauses. Pageant photography includes everything from the glamour shots used for pageant applications to event photography at the competition. More than just taking photos, pageant photographers play an important role in the world of pageantry.

No matter what level of pageant, contestants need  professional portraits  to strengthen their social media presence and populate pageant programs and websites. In the pageant industry, this special type of portrait photographer wears many hats, including stylist, makeup artist, coach, and cheerleader.

Every pageant is different.

Whether it’s a competition in small-town Maryland or the international stage for Miss Universe, pageants abound for contestants of all ages and genders. Popular pageants include Miss America, National American Miss, Miss USA, Teen USA, International Junior Miss (IJM), America’s Little Miss, Miss International Queen, Ms. America, Ms. Senior America, Universal Royalty, the All American Girl and Boy Pageant, Mister World, Mister International, and many more.

For these competitions, professional headshots are a requirement for all contestants. The ideal style of these photos varies by the age of the contestant and the pageant’s preferences.

If you want to excel as a photographer in this field, do research and get experience to learn the preferences of certain pageants — more glamorous or more natural, lifestyle or  fashion , a single style or a variety of looks. It’s important to consider what styles of photos might work best for contestants of varying ages and in different stages of life. 

Types of pageant photos.

Contestants need different types of images to compete. These range from  headshot photography  and posed fashion shots to lifestyle photos that show the contestant in their element. Here’s a simple breakdown:

Classic head-and-shoulders shots for the pageant program and website.

A friendly portrait that shows off the contestant’s personality for the judges to reference during interviews.

Fashion shots:

A full-body fashion portrait for the judges to reference during walking portions of competitions.

Social media shots:

A mix of portraits, lifestyle photos, and photos at competitions for the contestants’ and pageants’ websites and social media pages.

Posed, lifestyle, and studio photos.

Most pageant contestants will need  glamour photography  to showcase on their personal social media profiles and to share with pageants for their programs, websites, and social accounts. The photos should be a mix of headshots and full-body fashion portraits in various outfits, including some with crowns from past wins or sashes for upcoming pageants.

Have some fun with portraits and consider including lifestyle shots to showcase personality. Photos that capture contestants’ hobbies or personal background work well for social media profiles. “A lot of pageants look at a contestant’s social media profiles to check out the quality of their pictures,” says Verstraet. “So it’s not just about the headshot or the pageant shots. It’s everything leading up to the pageant.”

Photos during the pageant.

Some clients may hire you to take photos during the pageant as well. Contestants can use these images on websites and social media. As with any type of  event photography , research is important so you know what to expect.

“In order to prepare, we need to understand how a pageant works,” says Verstraet. “And then you can anticipate, as a photographer, what’s going to happen when, so you can begin to take pictures.”

Contestants should keep their eyes on the judges most of the time, but it’s good to have them look at the camera a few times during pivotal moments. Make sure your contestant knows where you’ll be shooting from so they can look your way periodically during the competition.

Shots of contestants doing their walks or being crowned after they’ve won a title will be great for their pageantry portfolio. Be sure to snap several shots in a row when there’s action. You can make contestants look more elegant with the right timing.

To get a graceful walking photo, capture the moment a contestant has their front foot on the ground with their back foot lifted for their next step.

Prepare for a pageant photoshoot.

Before your client comes to your photography studio for pageant portraits, explain to them what to expect. If they’ve never competed before, they may rely on you to let them know what to bring to their shoot and how to style themselves. “The first thing I ask when they book me is what their experience level is,” says Verstraet.

Most likely they’ll need to bring four or five outfits with various photogenic necklines and any pageant sashes or crowns that would be relevant to show in the photos. And whether you or someone else does their styling and makeup, it’s important to establish what the contestant likes and dislikes before you get started.

“Ultimately, if you put someone in red lipstick, and they hate red lipstick, they’re gonna hate their photos,” says photographer and makeup artist Lisa G. Simon (Artistry). “So there’s a lot of communication beforehand. I have them send me pictures of makeup, hair, and wardrobe that they love.”

Make your client feel at ease.

The key to great portrait photography is to make your client feel confident and comfortable. If you can, have a second set of eyes on set to help, especially for wardrobe styling. For clients in high school or younger, this will likely be their parent or guardian. But for adult clients, a good friend can come along to help out and lighten the mood.

When it comes to  successful portrait poses , it’s all about a happy and relaxed subject. Be specific about your directions, and perform the poses yourself when possible, so your client knows why certain ones work well. Always be supportive and affirming in the way you speak to them. If an overly critical parent is present, this can be even more crucial.

“Feedback has to be positive all the time,” says Verstraet. “Because if you tell someone that they’re doing something wrong, they feel more tense, and you don’t want that feeling in the picture.”

Tired, hungry clients don’t photograph well.

Be sure your subject has food, water, and rest before the shoot, and don’t let it run too long. “I can correct a smile. I can edit hair. But I can’t change what they're feeling,” says Simon. And if they’re hungry, they’re tired, or they’re being criticized, I can see it in their eyes. A real big part of it all is getting them to feel good.”

“I tell clients they can bring as many outfits as they want. But we need to stay within two hours,” says Verstraet. “If you take more than two hours, people get tired, and you don’t get the same quality pictures.”

Experiment and improve your work.

As you develop your pageant photography portfolio, play around and find new styles that work for you and your subjects. Striking styles and effects can attract new clients and keep your work fresh. Colored gels over your lights, a smoke or fog machine,  a bokeh effect , or unique  props  are all things you can try.

“Getting out of your comfort zone is really important,” says Simon. And when you try something new, take several shots of it, even if you feel like it may not work. “I’ve learned that you can never just go off what you see on the back of the camera,” says Simon. “It’s not until you get it on a big screen that it’s clear if it’s worked or not.”

Pageant photography retouching tips.

A big influence on the pricing of pageant photography is the post-production preparation of the images. Clients come to you not only for great pictures, but also for great edits on those pictures. But it’s about more than just editing for the crisp look you may see in typical photos of pageant girls and other pageant contestants.

Competitors want to look like themselves on their best day, so tasteful  retouching  is a must. Be careful not to over-edit the photo to the point where it doesn’t look like the contestant. The goal is a portrait that shows someone’s individual quirks but is also glitz and glam enough for the pageant scene.

Judges need to recognize the contestant from their photo when they walk onstage. “There are all these apps now that anyone can use to take a pretty good photo, but it won’t look like them,” says Simon. “There’s something really magical when you make a photo of someone looking the best they can, but it still really looks like them.”

Sort and share photos in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom.

Upload your photos to Lightroom to sort through them and make adjustments to exposure, contrast, shadows, and more. Create a Lightroom album, right-click on it, and select Share & Invite to have your clients comment on and favorite the shots they want you to retouch.

Transform shots in Adobe Photoshop.

To create an image that’s one in a million, move into Photoshop and try out more advanced transformations.  Replace image backgrounds , fine-tune colors, remove unwanted elements, and more.

“I think having a good understanding of Photoshop really sets you apart in the industry,” says Simon. “I’ve been using Photoshop for 20 years, and I’m still learning and watching tutorials. I love it. I can sit in my pajamas with my coffee, and I’m at work. It’s fun, and you get to be creative.”

Start with the eyes.

A stunning portrait of a pageant queen or king is often all about the eyes. “I want to make sure that the eyes are completely crisp,” says Verstraet. “So when I edit photos, I zoom in on the eyes first to make sure they’re in focus. Then I move on to other details, like filling in areas of the hair where the light may be shining through.” 

Immerse yourself in the pageantry world.

Attend pageants as often as you can, so you can learn what the contestants go through and what they need from you. “Most people have a preconceived idea of what a pageant is,” says Verstraet. “They think it’s just about a pretty dress, but it’s a lot more than that.”

Do some research, and you can find the type of pageant where you can succeed with your photography. But above all, don’t be afraid to break the mold and try a style of photography you haven’t seen out there yet. “Just trust in yourself and your vision,” says Simon. “I think that’s really important.”

As you gain experience as a pageant photographer, you’ll be able to provide your clients with advice and photographs that help turn them from contestants into titleholders — or even national pageant winners.

Many event planners find that a theme can help add structure to the décor and activities as well as tie it all neatly together. They can be a great way for your attendees to get involved and it can be a fun participatory activity in itself, while creating plenty of photo opportunities .

Themes can also create a buzz prior to the event as guests discuss how they can interpret the theme, what they are going to go as, what their friends are trying and whether they can do joint costumes which can be great corporate team building. Regardless of the event type, there is a theme to transform your event, improve user experience and only make the whole thing better.

1. Neon Garden

The neon theme has always been popular at raves or music events and it has recently found itself trickling into other event styles. This has seen the development of ‘color runs’, which involves attendees having neon paint and powder thrown at them during a 5K run .

2. Back To School

Turning your attendees into school kids and having them dig out their old school uniforms can not only create nostalgia, but also helps to bring people together. You can have staff dressed as teachers with giant digital blackboard graffiti walls and add quirky seating such as retro school writing desks.

3. Escape Rooms

An excellent corporate team building idea and a perfect event if you are looking to get attendees involved and problem-solving. It’s memorable and gets the adrenaline pumping without major sports and adventure, which is perfect for certain demographics.

4. Great Gatsby

A very popular theme idea that suits balls, galas, weddings and black tie events because of the lavish décor choices and the flowing gowns. This theme can be easily adaptable and if you are on a lower budget, easily represented by the gold and black color palette without any massive props or signage.

5. Love Boat

Opt for a cruise deck theme and décor, which could accommodate a glitzy dance floor and seated dining – think Titanic ballroom, but also shipwreck and beach décor too. Event staff could dress in nautical theme or sailor outfits and guests can opt for the nautical theme too; beach bikinis or even ballgowns. Nothing is out of bounds on the love boat.

6. Classic China

Using traditional color palettes to honor the history of the destination, this event was thoroughly researched and thought out to protect the culture and represent tradition well. Creating stunning effects using digital technology as well as color schemes and décor led to great user experience and beautiful results for this Shanghai-based event.

7. Crazy Hats

If you want to add a theme or a little fun to your serious event without expecting too much from your attendees, this can be a happy medium that allows them to wear suitable clothes of their choice but still get involved. You could even be more specific by opting for ‘themed hats’ instead!

8. Space Man

Evening events would work well with a space theme with dark color palettes complemented by twinkly lights and stars. You could extend this by adding planets or moons for centerpieces and table layouts, with space being the main theme. If you are including fancy dress, attendees could dress up as astronauts or aliens.

9. Mythical Creatures

From dragons, fairies and mermaids to leprechauns, werewolves and griffins, there is no limit to what you can concoct. Whether it is a made-up creature from a film, book or TV series, you can bring these mythological creatures and ideas to life.

10. Wacky Races

This cartoon was the original Mario Kart and would be great fun for attendees to dress up in the characters but also it would be an excellent theme for soapbox car building, or any other race, or sporting events such as cycling or running.

The Hawaiians know how to throw a beach party and it’s an awesome theme if you want to bring the beach to you. Have indoor luau’s during the winter or cold weather to boost attendee spirit and whisk them away to a tropical island! Think beach, hula or fire dancers, inflatables and of course a feast!

12. Urban Graffiti

If you want something more locally themed or you are trying to go for an urban cityscape feel, graffiti is a great idea and you can make it digital or have artists create their own backdrops. Incorporate bold, block colors for the scheme and even add in some geometric shapes, and this theme really comes together.

13. HoeDown

This folk dancing event involves country themes, rustic décor including hay barrel seating, bunting and string lights but always make sure you have a dance floor! You could also include mechanical bull-riding or for an authentic experience, add horse trail rides and roping practice into the activities.

14. Black & White

A traditionally classy event and definitely an easy option when it comes to décor and furniture, plus it seems to be an attendee favorite as many own black suits or dresses. Black goes with everything so you can mix it up using other color themes; some favorites include black and red, black and gold, gold and white or even all white. You could also decide on the main color by choosing the leading brand color and incorporating that.

15. Carnival

Big bold colors and signage, performers, funfair rides, plenty of stalls and games, popcorn and candyfloss treats on the snack tables are all a great place to start with this theme. You can also turn invitations into actual retro tickets and even have a big-top tent or incorporate the tent shape into other décor to really stand out.

16. People In History

Invite attendees to dress up as famous couples or figures throughout history and turn the décor and venue into a live history book. You can have walking entertainment playing historical figures and have giant props from different eras. The fun part about this is you can have different eras interacting with each other and have one area merge into another, which always makes for fun planning.

17. Game Of Thrones

With the long wait until the new series, many guests are going to be looking to get their Game of Thrones fix and this is an excellent way to do it. Depending on your favorite characters and city can depend on the décor and whether you go rustic and wrapped up like the north, or you want to go decadent and recreate King’s Landing.

18. The Orient Express

Based on Agatha Christie’s detective novel Orient Express , about a murder on the train, this idea could be a unique way to combine the elements of a murder mystery with a train or travel theme. Décor should be in keeping with the time period, as should costumes, but you can have quizzes and mental challenges as part of the games and activities. If you wanted to go more literal, you could also include books as centerpieces with décor origami from the pages.

19. Oktoberfest

Consider this an event inception, one event based on another so that you can have both at whichever time of the year suits you, so you don’t have to wait for October or travel to Munich! This German beer festival creates plenty of décor inspiration with the color palette leaning towards browns and greens. Outdoor events would benefit from large tends and a small fairground if you can fit it in.

20. Harry Potter

Over 19 years later and still a phenomenon, so why not use a Harry Potter theme as there are so many elements to include. From a game of Quidditch for teambuilding to getting your attendees to write in quills – who wouldn’t want to be a wizard for a day? These floating candles create stunning lighting effects that you can use, particularly for seated eating.

21. Rockabilly/Grease

Rockabilly or 1950’s theme is all about early rock and roll and whether you want to take directly from the favorite Grease film for inspiration and recreate iconic scenes or draw on the music and schemes from the era, you will have a hit. Drive-throughs, American diners, blues and country music will all work well in this theme.

22. Chocolate Heaven

Who doesn’t love chocolate? This can be an excellent opportunity for some food indulgence with large fondue fountains, chocolate gift boxes or table favors as well as big chocolate props as part of the décor. Opt for cream and brown color schemes and you could also incorporate a love theme as chocolate is considered as an aphrodisiac.

23. Moulin Rouge

The movie as well as the original inspiration involves cabaret, courtesans and of course the can-can! Focusing highly on dancing and entertainment, this theme is full of vibrant reds and golds (the name does mean ‘Red Mill’ after all) as well as taffeta and general extravangance (think of the giant elephant!).

24. Mardi Gras

String bead necklaces, bold colors and masks are an excellent place to start if you are trying to recreate mardi gras. Aim for orange, pink or purple florals, feathers on the tables or included in the décor and add some french signage to top this event off. You can go as big or as little as you want in this theme and you could even recreate parade floats or have mini float making competitions.

25. Emerald City/Wizard of Oz

The Emerald City is the destination Dorothy aims for in The Wizard of Oz and is easier to achieve than you might think. As you can see here, uplighting and digital projections have transformed this venue into a green paradise. You could also incorporate the ‘yellow brick road’ by projecting mapping or having yellow color carpet (rather than a red one) on the floor.

26. Atlantis/Under The Sea

Mermaids are a hot topic right now and these can easily be incorporated into an under the sea theme that includes blue lighting and décor as well as colorful or tropical fish. You could also have hanging bubbles or seaweed streamers and use shells for centerpieces which are also budget friendly too.

27. African Safari

Think The Lion King for inspiration and include a lot of animal print into the décor. Attendees could come as an exotic animal and the staff could be dressed as safari guides. You could also opt for animal stilt walkers or even have animal guests such as birds and parrots as a photo opportunity and a way of bringing fun to the event. For florals, opt for large leaves and vibrant colors.

A favourite for many as Disney has spanned through the ages and can be easy to adapt for adults or children, weddings or corporate. Simply pick a Disney story or movie and base your event on those. Add rustic simplicity to your event theme by having a day at the farm. This would suit indoor or outdoor events but be sure to use plenty of hay. Guests can come as farmers or even their favorite barnyard animals and tiny pitchfork centerpieces are a cute touch.

Argggh…decorate your venue like a looting ship with treasure, parrots, skeletons and of course a plank to walk! Invite guests to come as pirates and you can create interesting ‘sea’ effects on the walls to simulate the reflection of water inside the ship. Knights of the round table, banquets and king Arthur all fit this theme perfectly. You can have a large buffet to suit the banqueting style as well as swords and suits of armour. Finally find Wally by having attendees dress up in the fun red and white striped character (which are also excellent colors for this theme too.) Bring a quirky element by including busy scene backdrops for the photobooth or having places for attendees to hide away in. For trade shows and exhibitions or large event spaces, 360-video could look awesome with all these attendees and you could even get digital attendees involved to try and find a particular ‘Wally’ in the crowd.

49. Hollywood

Red carpets, glitz, glamor, black tie and ball gowns are all signs of a Hollywood A-list event. This franchise has so many possibilities, particularly with the release of the new films and this is an awesome example of a simple Star Wars theme execution. This custom bar is simple and elegant and added to themed or signature drinks creates a great experience. The hanging TIE fighters bring this theme together as if attendees are having a drink in the Star Wars universe.

53. Cosplay

Think Comic Con but on a smaller scale. Cosplay can be specific or general whereby you could pick a film, anime series, video game or even book and encourage guests to dress up as characters. Competitions for best costume always goes down a hit and it’s an excellent way to create a buzz around your event. Costumes are particularly good photo opportunities, particularly if characters are interacting across ‘universes’.

54. Magic/Magicians

Opt for entertainers from traditional magicians to illusionists, card tricksters or even tarot readers. Add mystical elements and keep the lighting low for an air of mystery and that magical effect. Color schemes that are a favorite are blue and gold (traditional magician’s cloak colors) and red and black. Include activities such as learning magic tricks and you can keep signature theme pieces such as the fluffy rabbit, magic top hat and wand in your décor.

Ancient Egypt is all about the cat-eye makeup, head-dresses and the desert. Sandy, yellow color palettes work well and yellow lighting can easily transform plain walls to suit this theme. A travel theme can quell your attendees wanderlust and is perfect if you don’t have the budget to actually travel with your attendees. Recreating prom can be a magical theme and adds a sense of nostalgia for many as well as building the hype. 81. Up In The Air

Take to the skies with an aeroplane or up in the air theme. Quirky ideas could include:

boarding pass event tickets, pilots, stewards and stewardesses as staff, suitcase props and sky color themes. You could model the venue on the inside of an aeroplane or hang various models from the ceiling as aerial décor or alternatively make clouds and surround yourself with hot air balloons, birds and balloons. If it’s in the sky, anything goes.

A particularly fun theme if there is a guest or brand of honor as this involves picking a letter and having everything in the theme start with the letter. Asia is a pretty big place and you can immerse yourself in a variety of culture by having buffets with different cuisines, Kpop music, flag bunting and you could even incorporate a cooking competition with an Asian theme, which attendees bring to add to the table (an excellent low-budget idea to ensure there is plenty of food). The colors you should consider are a lot of bold reds and golds.

85. Cops & Robbers

An interesting idea that allows attendees to come as either the police or a traditional bank robber, or alternatively you could hire event staff in police (or jailer) costumes and have all attendees be inmates. A perfect theme for a formal afternoon or for outdoor events that involves serving plenty of Pimms and tea! 88. Dinosaurs/Prehistoric

This is a quirky theme that, with the right budget can have fantastic effects. Choose from a jungle-orientated theme with plenty of foliage, walking mascots and even the autonomic remote dinosaurs that roar. You could also incorporate dinosaur bones and skeletons into the decor and table settings as well as asking attendees to come as cavemen and women.

89. Fairy Tales/Literary Stories

This is a popular theme with a lot of potential because you can opt to focus on one particular story or you can mix and blend them all, focusing on the books themselves, like with these table settings. You can also include darker themes for adult events by using the traditional tales rather than the adaptations, e.g. Hans Christian Anderson’s version of The Little mermaid or The Ugly Duckling . If using multiple tales and stories, be sure to be clear on what your theme is and have a proper structure otherwise it can easily be confusing for the attendee.

Tents, plastic cups and plenty of music is what is needed to recreate the festival vibe but what can make this theme more interesting is if it is adapted to a different type of event. For example, a festival theme for a corporate dinner could involve ceiling draping, indoor signposts, string lighting, replica trees and perhaps themed centrepieces such as tiny tents!

91. Bollywood

If done properly, this is a stunning theme that is full of vibrant colors and flowers as well as luxurious fabrics. You can have fun with color schemes here because the Bollywood theme manages to incorporate strange colors together well such as blues, pinks, purple and gold. Also, low warm lighting is essential to create the right mood and where possible plenty of floor seating and big pillows as well as fabric draping to lower the ceiling.

Consider hosting a ‘green’ themed event where as much as possible is sustainable and eco-friendly, for example by having hemp or bamboo fabrics and linen as well as using a lot of repurposed items for décor, just like this dresser food station. An easy and budget-friendly event idea for the last minute that can be comfortably casual is a teddy bear picnic. Although it works well outdoors, it can be moved inside and just involves comfortable pillows, floor seating and lowered tables with buffet styled food. Indulge in this theme more by having large props such as these or you could have bear-themed head in holes as a fun photo opportunity as well as a ‘bear-hunt’ treasure hunt.

94. Glitter

The ongoing glitter trend is strong at the moment with plenty of glitter products, drinks and food being released to accommodate. With this in mind, you can opt for glitter everything, make shiny, edible glitter food, have glitter carpet and lit backdrops creating the twinkle effect and of course, insist that all guests dress glittery. You can also have glitter stations with paint and make-up for attendees to use in case what they have is not enough (how do you know when enough glitter is enough? Is there ever enough?)

95. Night At The Museum

A theme with endless possibilities as a museum could house an array of different displays. This is an excellent example that showcases the paleontology department but incorporates it into the event. The signage is an excellent touch to incorporate the hashtag and if you are able to get a museum venue you can use the exhibits as the entertainment itself for your exclusive use as part of the package.

96. Tim Burton

The weird, the wonderful and the little bit scary is the perfect way to sum up a Tim Burton theme and you could let your creative side run wild. Incorporate characters from any Tim Burton creation and remember to think strange and dark by using giant props and lighting to create ethereal effects and wow attendees. To do this theme properly, you need to have a decent budget in place otherwise it falls flat.

97. 90’s TV

A 90’s theme is growing in popularity as the generation evolves and a favorite is incorporating 90’s TV shows. Guests dress up in their favorite characters and you have to guess the show that they are from ( Saved By The Bell is a firm favourite) and you can incorporate colourfun 90’s decor such as paint splatter effect backdrops, colorful origami, boyband music, massive cell phones and computers to represent the introduction of the Internet, CD’s and tamagotchis. You can also include polaroid cameras for attendees to take photos and go home with a memento.

98. Speakeasy

A gin or alcohol themed event can be an excellent sponsorship opportunity that can assist with the budget and is a particular craze at the moment. A speakeasy can also incorporate the 20’s theme and glamor as they originated during prohibition and were special clubs where alcohol was illegally sold. With this in mind you could create a more intimate and secret atmosphere with low lighting and ceilings as well as candles, alongside (of course) alcohol.

You may want to incorporate a local town or place that has significant meaning to the event and focus on the specific aspects that make it unique. Moms of Miss USA, Miss Teen USA speak out after daughters' resignations

Plus, their message that goes beyond the pageant world.

Days after the sudden dual resignations that rocked the pageantry world, the mothers of the Miss USA and Miss Teen USA Pageant winners spoke up on behalf of their daughters in a new interview with "Good Morning America."

"The job of their dreams turned out to be a nightmare," Barbara Srivastava, whose daughter UmaSofia Srivastava stepped down last week from her role as Miss Teen USA 2023, told "GMA." "We could not continue this charade. The girls decided to step down, give [up] their dream of a lifetime, a crown, a national title -- why would two girls -- decide to give that up?"

Former Miss Teen USA speaks out after giving up her title

The two beauty queens allege that a very ugly work environment turned toxic, but because they are both bound by contracts with confidentiality clauses, their moms are finding a platform to give voice to their experiences.

After former Miss USA Noelia Voigt posted about her resignation on social media, fans immediately noticed that the sentences seemed with letters that spelled out, "I am silenced."

"She is and she will be the rest of her life if this NDA [Non-disclosure agreement] isn’t being lifted," her mom Jackeline Voigt told "GMA." "The girls need to speak."

Her daughter from Sarasota, Florida blasted Miss USA and it's President Laylah Rose, writing in part, "there is a toxic work environment within the Miss USA organization that, at best, is poor management, at worst, is bullying and harassment." She added, "I was made to feel unsafe at events without an effective handler and this culminated in being sexually harassed."

Voigt said her daughter received unwanted advances at a Christmas parade.

"I saw Noelia so stress[ed] out. And I said, 'What happened?' And she said, 'Mom, get in the car. Get in the car.' When I got in the car, I say, 'What happened,' because I know he say something, but I couldn't get it. He told Noelia, 'Are you into old men with money,' and made Noelia very, very uncomfortable," her mom detailed to "GMA."

In her letter, Noelia Voigt wrote that Rose's response was, "We cannot prevent people from saying things to you at public appearances," explaining that it essentially just comes with the territory.

Voigt said that her daughter was not told, "I'm sorry that you went through that."

"After she resigned, Noelia came back home. And it was so beautiful to see her running in my living room with the dogs. I had my Noelia back," Voigt said. "She was so upset. This is not what she worked so hard for."

"Then Miss Universe organization need to come out and speak to us, or apologize, or clean this mess," Voight continued.

"The crown weighs heavy," Srivastava said.

She alleges that her teenage daughter, who is from New Jersey and currently finishing up her junior year of high school, was also bullied by management causing her to miss out on opportunities, all while having her personal social media surveilled and controlled.

"I want to be clear, it's not about what they didn't get, about the prizes. It's about how they were ill-treated, abused, bullied, and cornered," Srivastava said.

Since Noelia Voigt resigned, Srivastava said her daughter knew she needed to do the same.

"My personal values no longer aligned with the direction that organization is going into," the former Miss Teen USA wrote in her statement on social media.

"When she saw that they were attacking Noelia's mental health, [UmaSofia] said, 'I cannot stand for this. I need to stand up with Noelia,'" her mom Barbara Srivastava recalled of the alleged catalyst and chain reaction.

The Miss USA organization told ABC News, "We are committed to fostering a healthy, communicative and supportive environment for all contestants, state titleholders, national titleholders and staff."

Laylah Rose did not immediately respond to ABC News' request for comment.

Both moms say they want Rose to step down, but until then are sharing a warning for future contestants.

"Look at what happened to Noelia [and] UmaSofia," Jackeline Voigt said. "Really pay attention. We don't want them to go through this. Right now, it's not the right time to participate."

When asked if she thinks that young women should stop participating in these types of pageants, Voigt said, "absolutely."

"We just don't want these families and these girls to go through what we're going through," she continued.

The CW, which airs the Miss USA and Miss Teen USA competitions, said it is "evaluating" the relationship with the pageants in light of these resignations and allegations.

Noelia and UmaSofia have both written books about their experience being bullied growing up. They have said they hope to encourage other women to speak out against any kind of mistreatment.

Both of their moms said the message coming from all of this is beyond the pageant world, and they hope their daughters can provide an example of staying true to yourself and using your voice no matter the sacrifice.

D ays after their daughters’ decisions to relinquish their pageant titles, the mothers of former Miss USA Noelia Voigt and Miss Teen USA UmaSofia Srivastava are speaking out — in place of their daughters, who they say are still bound by non-disclosure agreements with the Miss USA organization.

“The job of their dreams turned out to be a nightmare,” Barbara Srivastava said on Good Morning America on Tuesday, sitting alongside Jackeline Voigt. “We could not continue this charade. The girls decided to step down and give (up) their dream of a lifetime — a crown, a national title. Why would two girls decide to give that up?”

It is the first time the mothers have spoken publicly about the ordeal, which roiled the pageant world last week. It marked the first time a titleholder in Miss USA or Miss Teen USA had resigned, and both happened in quick succession. On Instagram, UmaSofia Srivastava said her values “no longer aligned” with those of the organization, while Noelia Voigt cited her mental health, though her long, cryptic statement seemed to spell out “I am silenced” in the first 11 sentences.

Speaking on Good Morning America, Jackeline declined to answer whether the supposed secret message was intentional. But responding to whether she feels as if her daughter was silenced, she said “She is, and she would be the rest of her life if this NDA is not (lifted).”

Voigt’s resignation letter to Miss USA, obtained and published by CNN on Saturday, revealed a range of allegations against Miss USA CEO Laylah Rose, including a “toxic work environment” rife with “bullying.”

According to the letter, Rose is “actively building a culture of fear and control, the antithesis of women’s empowerment, that is…unsafe for future titleholders and employees,” Voigt wrote. Among the issues, Voigt claimed that Rose failed to provide her with appropriate travel accommodations or an “effective handler,” leading to an incident where she was left alone in a car with a stranger at a parade in Sarasota, Florida, where an unnamed man sexually harassed her, she wrote.

Her mother, who was with her in Sarasota, saw her just after the alleged incident occurred, she said in the interview.

“I saw Noelia so stressed out, and I said, ‘What happened?’ and she said, ‘Mom, get in the car,’” she recalled. “He told Noelia, ‘Are you into old men with money?’ and made Noelia very, very uncomfortable.”

Rose did not apologize, according to Jackeline. In her resignation letter, Voigt said that Rose told her that the organization “cannot prevent people saying things to you at public appearances” and that it is “unfortunately, part of the role.”

Barbara Srivastava said that during their reigning year, the titleholders were “ill-treated, abused, bullied and cornered.”

Jackeline called for the Miss Universe Organization, which owns Miss USA, to “speak to us or apologize.” The parent organization, owned by JKN Global Group, has been silent over the past week.

The Miss USA and Miss Universe Organization did not immediately return a request for comment, and did not respond to CNN’s earlier requests for comments on Friday.

For now, the mothers are warning prospective pageant contestants about getting involved with Miss USA. On Wednesday, the runner-up for Miss USA, Savannah Gankiewicz from Hawaii, will step up and take the title in a ceremony. But Miss Teen USA remains open, as the runner-up from 2023, New York’s Stephanie Skinner, declined to be crowned in a public statement on Instagram. CNN has contacted the second runner-up, Miss Pennsylvania Teen Maggie Ross, on whether she will take the title, but no announcement has been made.

“Look at what happened to Noelia and UmaSofia. Right now, it’s not the right time to participate,” Jackeline said.

“We just don’t want these families and these girls to go through what we’re going through,” she added.

On GMA today, Voigt’s mother gave as an example an unwanted advance made to her daughter at a Christmas parade in which a man asked if she was “into old men with money.” The incident “made Noelia very, very uncomfortable,” Jackeline Voigt said, adding, “She was so upset. This is not what she worked so hard for.”

When GMA ‘s Erielle Reshef referenced online speculation that the public statement made last week by Noelia Voigt contained a hidden message – the first letters of each sentence spelled out “I Am Silenced,” Jackeline Voigt said, “I don’t feel comfortable answering that question.”

Barbara Srivastava said her daughter’s personal social media accounts were monitored and controlled by pageant officials. “The job of their dreams turned out to be a nightmare,” she told GMA .

In a statement to ABC News, the Miss USA organization said, “We are committed to fostering a healthy, communicative and supportive environment for all contestants, state titleholders, national titleholders and staff.” Officials for the Miss Teen USA Pageant did not comment.

Department of Labor announces ‘Access to Good Jobs for All’ as National Disability Employment Awareness Month’s 2024 theme

WASHINGTON  – The Department of Labor today announced that its Office of Disability Employment Policy has chosen “Access to Good Jobs for All” as the theme for National Disability Employment Awareness Month, which will be observed in October. 

NDEAM annually celebrates the contributions of the nation’s disabled workers and showcases supportive, inclusive policies and practices that benefit employees and employers alike. 

“Our theme in 2024, ‘Access to Good Jobs for All,’ speaks to our commitment to expand the number of employment opportunities for people with disabilities and the quality of those opportunities,” explained Assistant Secretary for Disability Employment Policy Taryn M. Williams. “Good jobs change lives and all workers — including disabled people — deserve the opportunity to prepare for success in high-quality, good-paying jobs in workplaces free of discrimination.”

In 1945, the nation first designated a national week to recognize the contribution of people with physical disabilities. Designated by Congress as NDEAM in 1988, the commemoration evolved to acknowledge the importance of increasing the number of people with disabilities in the workforce. In 2001, ODEP was created and was given responsibility for NDEAM and for selecting and helping promote its annual theme.

Well, this duo  was stunned  when a restaurant made them  pay for a slice of birthday cake they didn’t order .
