Corporate Social Responsibility: the institutionalization of ESG

Anderson, Erika (2023) Corporate Social Responsibility: the institutionalization of ESG. PhD thesis, University of Glasgow.

Understanding the impact of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) on firm performance as it relates to industries reliant on technological innovation is a complex and perpetually evolving challenge. To thoroughly investigate this topic, this dissertation will adopt an economics-based structure to address three primary hypotheses. This structure allows for each hypothesis to essentially be a standalone empirical paper, unified by an overall analysis of the nature of impact that ESG has on firm performance. The first hypothesis explores the evolution of CSR to the modern quantified iteration of ESG has led to the institutionalization and standardization of the CSR concept. The second hypothesis fills gaps in existing literature testing the relationship between firm performance and ESG by finding that the relationship is significantly positive in long-term, strategic metrics (ROA and ROIC) and that there is no correlation in short-term metrics (ROE and ROS). Finally, the third hypothesis states that if a firm has a long-term strategic ESG plan, as proxied by the publication of CSR reports, then it is more resilience to damage from controversies. This is supported by the finding that pro-ESG firms consistently fared better than their counterparts in both financial and ESG performance, even in the event of a controversy. However, firms with consistent reporting are also held to a higher standard than their nonreporting peers, suggesting a higher risk and higher reward dynamic. These findings support the theory of good management, in that long-term strategic planning is both immediately economically beneficial and serves as a means of risk management and social impact mitigation. Overall, this contributes to the literature by fillings gaps in the nature of impact that ESG has on firm performance, particularly from a management perspective.

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in a Developing Country: An Analysis of Public-listed Corporations in Malaysia

Copy to clipboard Copy Ahmad, Anis Suriati (2016) Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in a Developing Country: An Analysis of Public-listed Corporations in Malaysia. PhD thesis, University of Essex.

This study examines the nature and extent of CSR practices in Malaysia, a developing country located in the South-East Asia. The cause for concern highlighted in a number of studies in the field of CSR is centred on the unparalleled economic, social and political power that corporations possess in a contemporary economic environment. It has been argued that corporate large-scale operations pose considerable challenges to existing domestic and international governance institutions. In response to various pressures from civil society groups and NGOs, corporations espouse CSR commitment by producing codes of conduct and increasingly report its CSR engagement. Nevertheless, the present form of modern corporations, anchored by the ‘ideology’ of economic and legal views of the corporation offer limited insight into the practice of CSR. It has been argued that developing countries’ institutional structures are often devised to increase capital mobility and pressure to attract foreign investment in order to foster social and economic growth. This may influence the development of institutional structures for promoting social responsibility and public accountability and indeed shape social relations in a capitalist society. In the case of Malaysia, it can be observed that the powerful social elite set the agenda for maintaining social cohesion, mobilising Bumiputera hegemony in the process of capital accumulation and suppressing concerns about the tensions between capitalism and socio-economic and environmental concerns. In this context, CSR provided corporate managers and political elites with a tool, used to maintain the status quo and masked conflicting interests under the notion of ‘corporate social responsibility’. The analysis of several reports and documents of public-listed corporations in Malaysia showed gaps in the knowledge of CSR discourse and how it can be ‘operationalised’ in the best interest of the public at large. The review of documented evidence also indicated the gap between corporate pledges of CSR and what actually happened in practices.

Sustainable development and social responsibility of businesses or corporations have become increasingly an issue of concern since the early 1990s. The basic human activity trade is not always about making money though profit has been associated with it. Business with their products and consequence are essentially more social than economic. Through the marketplace and governmental regulation, social and environmental concerns are related to business. Society and business depend on each other and business must take full account of the societal expectations. Sustainable business looks at how a business can adapt to global social and environmental trends, such as future regulation on carbon output, water shortages, and changing demographics. Social, Economic and environment are the three pillars or dimensions of Sustainable development. Sustainability is a conscious choice on a continuous basis. To move towards more sustainability, all of us need to change our patterns of consumption and production. Principles of Sustainable Development and CSR have close links. Sustainable businesses create the future by creating stronger, richer markets for business. Every business strives to earn maximum profit. However, companies have to shoulder certain responsibilities as a corporate citizen. Corporation need to review and consider new or modified business practices regularly that will improve the quality of life of all stakeholders. Both society and business used to believe that taking care of other social and environmental concerns are the duty of the state or government. Companies have become the main players in creating environmental and social problems; therefore, change must begin with companies that can lead a transition. CSR matters as it mirrors the core values of the society and been instrumental in bringing about Sustainable development. CSR has a complex relationship between business and society and plays an important part of the business environment. Business organizations are accountable to that society for their actions as they are part of the larger society Responsible leaders are concerned with reconciling and aligning the demands, needs, interests, and values of the key stakeholders. CSR expects accountability from all stakeholders. Good Stakeholder relationships can lead to competitive advantage. The relationship between Sustainable Development and CSR was not explicit as these concepts progressed separately for a long time. In recent years these two concepts of CSR and sustainable development has strengthened with their interactions. A dynamic and well-functioning business sector, can be driving force of sustainable development. CSR is multifunctional in nature. Hence, it is important that integral and broad sustainable CSR is undertaken. This will help in the quest to develop transformational and sustainable CSR practices. *************

Today businesses are integral part of the society. Corporate social responsibility plays a vital role in winning the customer's confidence that will help growing the business. Many organizations actively conduct campaigns to create awareness among corporate, civic bodies, and government bodies about the importance of corporate social responsibility. According to the Indian Corporate,-Sustainable development implies optimizing financial position while not depleting social and environmental aspects and CSR implies supporting issues related to children, women and environment. This study mainly looks at the various initiatives taken up by Karnataka Bank Ltd, Autoliv and The South India Paper Mills Ltd. By the results we can conclude that CSR at any level is very important for a progressive Corporate culture in the coming days, so that companies give back equally to society. These initiatives need more support and motivation from both the society as well as the Government.

Corporate Social Responsibility refers to ensuring the success of the business by inclusion of social and environmental considerations into a company’s operations. It means satisfying your shareholders’ and customers’ demands while also managing the expectation of other stakeholders such as employeessuppliers and the community at large. It also means contributing positively to society and managing your organization’s environmental impact. Hence, CSR is a contribution to sustainable development, implying the way a company balances its economic, environmental and social objectives while addressing stakeholder expectations and enhancing shareholder value. The CSR concept -was initially used by national companies more as a marketing and media coverage instrument, rather than for its ethical values. As time went by, it became clear that-the business environment is a key element in finding solutions to community issues. This research paper-aims at analyzing the importance of

This paper is looking for the answer to the question that how the concept of CSR is an old concept, which existed for a long period. Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Corporate social responsibility (CSR) can be described as embracing responsibility and encouraging a positive impact through the company’s activities related to the environment, consumers, employees, communities, and other stakeholders. It may include philanthropic efforts, employee volunteering, and core strategies. Companies may benchmark their CSR performance relative to peers and may also report on CSR policies or undergo social audits. Proponents of CSR argue that socially responsible practices can have a positive impact on the bottom line and may also argue for the recognition of a “triple bottom line” that rewards social, environmental, and financial returns. Critics argue that CSR competes with shareholder value maximization and may be prone to “green washing”. While Sustainable development refers primarily to issues of environmental impact and economic justice, while CSR is deeply linked to the concept of sustainable development and both are “moving targets” that can be achieved only by a process of continuous improvement. Sustainable Development and CSR are closely related business concepts that have greatly affected corporate governance in the early 21st century. Sustainable development involves the use of environmentally responsible and efficient operational practices that preserve environmental resources crucial to your long-term business success. The aim of this paper is to give a basic approach regarding CSR and Sustainable Development, to find the relationship between them and to give overview and descriptive study regarding role of CSR in achieving Sustainable Development. Corporate social responsibility on part of the business organizations is a commitment to function in an ethical manner and bring significant changes in the local community and society to ensure sustained economic development.

Companies are recognizing that since they are managing an economic unit in the society, they have a broad obligation to the society with regard to matters of long term sustainability. The question is who will lead the responsible growth for the Indian economy. Since we are in the midst of a consumption boom, faster growth and rising incomes means India will be the leading economy in the world. This case study explores the purpose of CSR initiatives that range from enhancing the livelihoods of beneficiaries, reducing the environmental impact and improving the health and well being of society as a whole.

Corporate Social Responsibility has been around for a long time and seems to have a timeless concern for reputation, ethics and values of a Corporation; however, the modern and the scientific era of CSR began with the outstanding contribution of the landmark work entitled, Social Responsibilities of the Businessman by Howard Bowen and subsequent publication of Strategic management: A Stakeholder Approach. This concept has been subjected to a lot of managerial and skilled opinions, discussions and analysis. In spite of the apparently endless discussion and research regarding its contours, it has seen a lots of growth and development in both academic and practitioner circles. Its alternative thematic wheels work to enhance the well being of a community through social and environmental stability vetted with the concept of sustainability, benevolent business practices and responsible stakeholder investment, which assumes a great significance and is assayed within the framework of this article.
