How to report a YouTube video that you find inappropriate or rule-breaking

  • If you see a YouTube video that you feel is inappropriate, you can report the video to YouTube for potential removal.
  • People who report YouTube videos are kept anonymous, while if the report is accepted, the party that posted the content will be informed that their video is under review.

YouTube's rules aren't very strict, but there are still a number of rules that creators need to follow. If you see a video on YouTube that you think is inappropriate or illegal, be it hate speech, pornographic, libelous, or otherwise improper, you can report the video to YouTube.

You will remain anonymous when reporting a YouTube video, while the report will go to a group of YouTube moderators to review. If the report is accepted, whoever posted the video will be told their content is under review. Any account that repeatedly posts inappropriate YouTube videos could ultimately be terminated and banned from the site.

How to report a YouTube video

1. While logged into your YouTube account, go to the video in question.

2. Click on the three dots below the video, to the right of the view count and title, and then hit "Report."

3. Select the primary reason you're reporting the video ("Spam or misleading," e.g.) and then select a specific reason from the dropdown menu that appears. If there are offensive links in the video, click the box that indicates as such. Click "Next" once you're done.

4. Mark down the timestamp where the offensive content occurs, and add any comments you have to support your report and tell moderators what to look for.

5. Click "Report" to confirm the report, and then let YouTube's moderators take care of the rest.

YouTube is a wild west of content. There are some great videos there, but also some truly awful ones . You can help out by reporting questionable content.

With 300 hours of video being uploaded to YouTube every minute , there’s just no way for Google to effectively police it all. That’s where you, the viewer, come in. If you think a video is against YouTube’s Community Guidelines , you can report it. YouTube’s human moderators (who are on duty 24 hours a day, 365 days a year) will then review it. If it is against the Guidelines, it will get removed and the YouTube Channel will face sanctions. Too many violations (or ones that are too objectionable) and the whole Channel can be removed. Let’s look at how to do it.

YouTube’s Community Guidelines are pretty vague---and for good reason. The vagueness allows Google some leeway in determining what content they allow on the platform. The things they explicitly cover under the guidelines include:

  • Nudity or sexual content
  • Harmful or dangerous content
  • Hateful content
  • Violent or graphic content
  • Harassment and cyberbullying
  • Spam and scams
  • Copyright infringement
  • Privacy violations
  • Impersonation
  • Child endangerment

If you see videos that go against these guidelines (or other stuff you think is questionable), you can report it.

For a feature that’s so important, the option to report a video on YouTube is actually slightly hidden, so it's easy to overlook if you don't know it's there.

First off, you do need to be logged in to your Google account to report a video. After you log in, click the three little dots beneath the video.

In the popup menu, click the "Report" option.

To report a video using the YouTube mobile app, you need to first tap the video to bring up all the options and controls. Next, tap the three little dots in the top right corner, and then click the "Report" option.

Whichever platform you report the video on, you need to provide YouTube with a little more information. Select the reason you think it violates the Community Guidelines, and then click the "Next" button.

Add in any additional information that explains the issues with the video, and then click "Report."

YouTube’s moderators will review your report as soon as possible.

Videos aren’t the only place you find questionable content on YouTube; the comment section is famously awful. If you see a comment that goes against the Community Guidelines---or looks like it’s spam---here’s how to report it.

Once again, on the website, the option is a little hidden. If you just look at a comment, there’s no obvious way to report it.

Once you hover your mouse over it, however, three little dots appear on the right hand side.

Click those dots, and then select the "Report Spam or Abuse" option.

Select the reason you’re reporting the comment, and then click "Report."

In the mobile app, things are a little more obvious. The three little dots aren’t hidden, so just tap them, and then tap "Report."

YouTube has serious content issues. With so many thousands of hours of videos uploaded everyday, it’s no wonder that some portion of them is pretty awful. There’s also the ongoing abuse that happens in the comments. Now at least, you know how to do something about it.

If you’re involved in making video content, most likely, your YouTube channel is incredibly important to your business. In fact, since it’s the biggest video hosting platform out there, as a video marketer, you simply can’t afford to ignore it.  

But to make the best use of video marketing on YouTube, you need to be able to track and analyze how your channel is performing. This should be simple, right? Just check the likes and subscribers and you’re good to go!

Well, that’s not quite true. Too many people are still focused on the “classical” metrics like likes, ratio, and subscriber count. While important, they’re hardly the only thing you should pay attention to. 

So, if you want to create a comprehensive YouTube Analytics report, you need to dive deeper into the data and identify the metrics that really matter.

YouTube Analytics gives you more than simply raw numbers, it helps you understand your audience better. You’ll be able to identify which of your videos are drawing in the largest audience, which are being watched all the way through, where the majority of your audience is coming from, and much more. 

YouTube’s native platform is a true treasure trove of valuable insights, but it can overwhelm someone who isn’t used to it. To access YouTube Analytics, first, you need to click on your profile icon in the upper right corner and select YouTube studio . A list of icons should open up on the left-hand side of the screen — select Analytics .

There should be four or five Channel analytics tabs on your dashboard: overview, reach, engagement, audience, and revenue. However, the revenue tab is available if you’re monetizing the channel through YouTube. By clicking on these tabs, you’ll find detailed metrics about your account’s performance, and if you need more information, click on the ‘Advanced Mode’ in the top right corner. That way, you’ll get individual metrics for each video.

You can also track YouTube channel performance directly through your Google Analytics dashboard. To connect YouTube with GA, click the Admin gear icon in the lower-left corner of your GA dashboard and then select Create View. All that’s left to do is to fill out the form and create a filter that shows only YouTube traffic. Select Filters, name your new filter, and select Custom. Finally, click Include and choose Hostname from the menu, and type “youtube” in the Filter Pattern box. Are analytics and reports that you are obtaining from YouTube KPIs or Google Analytics the same thing? Not exactly. Analytics is the process of collecting and analyzing data to gain insights directly in the YouTube platform, while reports in Google Analytics are pre-designed presentations of data that provide a summary of key metrics or KPIs from YouTube and e.g. landing page or website as well – if set so.

While YouTube provides a lot of data for us to analyze, building a comprehensive and, more importantly, useful report can be tricky unless we know what we’re looking for and what information is useful in which context. Some metrics are important on the channel level, others only on the video level. 

To further complicate things, metrics that we’re used to from other types of content aren’t necessarily relevant in the same way for video. And they may be even less relevant for YouTube since it uses its own ranking and curating algorithm.

Another complicating factor is the aim of your channel. Is it brand awareness or advertising? Do you aim to educate people about your products or the problems they might solve? This is a broad metric that covers likes, shares, comments, and a lot more. Video engagement is a qualitative metric that can help you gauge the video’s emotional impact based on user interaction. In addition, it can assist in generating future content ideas.

This is definitely one of the most important metrics to keep an eye on. While views are important, they’re not enough. If the people aren’t watching the video all the way through, that’s a sign they’re not engaging with the content the way you want them to. In addition, higher watch time leads to YouTube ranking your video more highly in the search results and recommendations.

Traffic source

This metric tells you how to add the right tags and keywords to your content. By analyzing what the users were watching or looking for before reaching your video, you can fine-tune your descriptions and tags to better match user intent, which will give you a better chance of appearing among “suggested videos.”

Lead generation

This metric is particularly useful for brands that use YouTube for direct sales and marketing. In addition to tracking lead generation across the channel or campaign, you can use information about lead generation to keep track of other important metrics and KPIs. 

You can use it to figure out which videos drive the best leads or most leads, where traffic to high-converting videos comes from, and where you can improve. For example, you can change the videos, change your posting frequency, update your advertising campaign, or any apply any number of practices depending on the results you get.

View velocity

This metric tracks how quickly your video accrues views. Established channels have the highest velocity shortly after the video is published, while the newer ones tend to have it increase later, as people discover the channel and start engaging with the content.

Channels with a constant stream of high velocity videos are more likely to have their video featured on YouTube’s homepage.

Actions after viewing

At first glance, this may seem to be a paradox, but actions a user takes after viewing a video can be just as important as what leads them to the video. Did the viewer click on the CTA button or close the window? Did they continue watching the playlist, select a different video, or click a link in your description?

This information will tell you how to better engage with your users and keep them on your channel for longer.

Subscribers gained and lost by video

This tends to be a more important metric than subscriber gains and losses on the channel as a whole. It allows you to better understand what videos are bringing new subscribers and which ones are potentially losing them. Once you know that, you can try to identify why that’s happening and make the necessary adjustments.

Trying to cram every bit of information into a small space just leads to clutter and makes the data difficult to parse. Here are standard YouTube Analytics reports that focus on specific metrics or sets of metrics that will tell you how your channel is doing.

The following list is not comprehensive, and some report types can be split into sub-reports if you want to focus on specific metrics.

1. General Reports

These are the basic, go-to reports that cover the most important things.

The Overview Report gives you a high-level summary of how your channel and videos are doing. It’s easy to understand, and it’s excellent for those situations when you don’t have the time to do a deep dive into the numbers.

The Realtime Report does exactly what it says on the tin. It gives you an estimate of view count data for your recent videos — including people watching them right now. This report is great if you’re putting out regular videos and want to track metrics frequently.

2. Watch Time Report

The Watch Time Report aggregates data from both the YouTube homepage and the mobile app to create a breakdown of viewer retention. It covers average view percentage, estimated minutes watched, average view duration, watch time, views, and so on.

3. Audience Retention Report

By looking at the metrics in this report, you’ll be able to understand whether or not your viewers are sticking to your videos. The audience retention curve tells you which parts of the video are popular or not and which videos, in particular, have a low/high retention rate.

4. Playback Locations Report

This report highlights where users are viewing your videos (YouTube directly or embedded videos) and lets you know where they’re finding it. If the video was viewed on YouTube, you’d find out if it was watched from the channel’s page or the video’s specific page.

5. Traffic Sources Report

If you want to find out YouTube features, apps, or sites viewers used to find your videos, this is the report for you. It lets you know if your optimization and promotion strategies are working or if they need some fine-tuning.

6. Devices Report

This report will give you information on the different devices — PCs, tablets, phones, TVs, consoles — and operating systems — Windows, iOS, Linux — viewers are using to access your content.

The benefits are twofold. First, you can adjust your advertising and promotion strategies to adjust to your demographic. Second, you can adjust the type of content you’re making; mobile users tend to look for short videos, for example.

7. Engagement Reports

Engagement is an important KPI, and it encompasses a lot of other metrics, including likes, dislikes, subscriptions, sharing, and comments.

Depending on the type of content you’re publishing, they have different “weights.” Videos aimed to entertain need to have a  high number of likes and shares, while educational videos might be looking for subscriptions.

8. Earnings Reports

Finally, there’s the Earnings report. It’s relevant for anyone who wants to post ad-friendly content and keep track of their earnings.

Here's how to do it in five easy steps (tried-and-tested by Later's social team):

Step #1: Ready, Set, Brainstorm

The topic you discuss in your video will form the base of your outline. 

So, it’s a good idea to map out a list of 5-10 topics that are relevant to your niche.

If you’re not sure where to start, try using these questions as prompts: 

What are some frequently asked questions that you could turn into a tutorial? 

What are some common myths in your industry? 

Could you add your perspective to any industry news or recent changes?

From there, establish the relevancy of those topics through keyword research and analysis.

This is key to determining the popularity and discoverability of your topic — the higher your keywords rank, the more likely your videos will perform. 

Just keep in mind, viewers can sense when you’re not genuinely interested in a topic, so it’s best to pick one that’s authentic to your brand, and not just a high-ranking keyword.

Step #2: Build Your Outline 

Once you’ve nailed down your topic, it’s time to create your outline.

This is where you’ll break down your topic into sections.

If you’re basing your YouTube script off a blog post, we recommend using similar headlines to guide what your sections will be.

However, if you’re starting from scratch, you’ll want to stick to this formula:

Grab Attention: Hook your audience through a question, a pain point, an interesting fact, or a personal story.

Introduction: Introduce what you’ll be sharing in this video.

Main Headlines: Break your topic down into digestible sections with clear examples and explanations.

Throughout these sections, include visual elements that'll help illustrate your points like pop-up text, screenshots, b-roll, and transitions.

TIP: Once your video is uploaded to YouTube, you can convert these headlines into clickable timestamps in your video description (see this Later video as an example).

Conclusion: Sum up your video a short and sweet CTA, like subscribing to your channel, following you on Instagram, or clicking the link in your description.

Step #3: Write Your Script

Before you start writing, establish who will be speaking on camera. 

This will help determine the tone of the YouTube script — including how they converse naturally and any nuances that come with their personal expertise. 

Once that’s done and dusted, what software should you use to write your script? It depends!

Why? Each line of text can be separated into its own row, making it easy to indicate where visual elements and CTAs should appear:

Keep in mind, most teleprompter apps and software like Speakflow will require a CSV format of your text in order to automatically upload.

Alternatively, we recommend CapCut’s in-app teleprompter, which requires manual transcription to use the feature.

Once you've decided what format your script will live in, it's time to start expanding on your outline:

Keep It Short: Go into as much detail as possible using the fewest words. For your introduction, viewers want to know what they're about to learn and how you're going to help them. For your main points, avoid rambling or unnecessary filler words.

Again, Short: On the Later YouTube channel , we've found that our most engaging videos are between two to three minutes in length. However, it's worth experimenting to see if longer-form video resonates with your key audience.

TIP: To figure out how many minutes your YouTube video will be based on your script’s word count, we follow a 150 words = 1 minute of speech rule.

Step #4: Map Out Visuals 

In the outline stage, you may have started identifying where your visual elements were going to appear. 

Here, we recommend finalizing those elements along with the copy for your text pop-ups (make a note in whichever template or software you use to write your script — see step #3).

Visuals can include charts, graphics, GIFs, or screen recordings that'll help illustrate your points.

Step #5: Edit, Edit, Edit

In this step, you'll trim and simplify your YouTube script. 

Reading your script aloud will help you get a sense of the natural flow of your dialogue.

Trust us, if it’s too choppy or over-complicated, you’ll hear it.

Doing a verbal run-through of your script will also help you reduce any filler words that are taking up time.
