Behold, the first great summer film: a three-hour action-adventure about a leader whose heroic deeds make Conan the Barbarian look like a wimp. The Indian action/period epic "Baahubali 2: The Conclusion" is everything I want but rarely get from superhero and big-budget fantasy movies. Here, larger-than-life characters—specifically a beloved warrior-king Amarendra Baahubali (Prabhas) and his jealous cousin Bhalla ( Rana Daggubati )—fight for the Mashimathi throne while declaiming dramatically, flying into thin air, impaling or beheading their enemies, then singing about their exploits.

Thanks to blessedly short flashbacks and fittingly bombastic expository dialogue, viewers of "Baahubali 2: The Conclusion" don't need to have seen the previous film to know what's at stake. Better still: the action choreography is exciting, the operatic plot is compelling, and a genuine sense of optimism undercuts the geysers of blood and thunderous sound effects that accompany the film's stirring set pieces. Here's a splashy, big-budget film with an infectious sense of momentum that wins you over any time key plot points are glossed over for the sake of establishing the next big confrontation. It's loud, it's gory, and there are musical numbers.

One sure sign of quality: despite some seriously ostentatious moralizing, "Baahubali 2" is inspired enough to make you care about characters who are as morally upstanding as Biblical figures and as relatable as refugees from a children's fairy tale. Sure, Amarendra possesses superhuman strength, agility, and filial piety (like many men in Indian movies, he worships his mom). That's only because right initially seems to make might in this universe. But as the movie goes on, it becomes clear that, despite good intentions (writ large through Frank Capra-worthy speeches) even the best people can be manipulated into committing crimes against each other. This is true of Bhalla, an innocent character whose natural jealousy is manipulated into hating his cousin by his petty father Bijjaladeva (Nassar). And it's eventually also true of both Baahubali's mother Sivagami ( Ramya Krishnan ) and uncle/adviser Kattappa (Sathyaraj). 

It's refreshing to see these characters, who are often seemingly painted as paragons of virtue and vice, have their wills tested by various trials—and sometimes fail. These momentary weaknesses sometimes indicate character flaws, as in Bhalla's case. But they also sometimes suggest that good people can make big mistakes. The film's refusal to judge character solely based on how they respond to mitigating circumstances is refreshing.

So is the fact that both Sivagami and Baahubali's devoted wife Devasena ( Anushka Shetty ) have more than a token amount of influence and power throughout the film. They fight alongside Baahubali as he struggles to remain unmoved by the promise of power ( the throne!) while also not looking weak in front of his treacherous brother or his manipulative uncle. Prabhas's character isn't just admirable because of his Herculean feats of physical strength, but because of his ability to make Solomon-like judgment calls before he masterfully glares at the camera, makes a little speech, then soars into battle.

And I do mean "soar." The fight scenes in "Baahubali 2" are so creative that they make even the most frequently abused creative shortcuts seem novel, everything from computer-generated imagery (CGI) to speed-ramping (Zack Snyder's signature technique of speeding up, then slowing down, then speeding up the tempo of a particularly action or physical motion). You care what happens to the cast as, aided by wires, they hurl volleys of arrows at disposable minions and CGI animals.

You haven't seen action scenes with physics and logic-defying choreography like this before. Baahubali breaks massive chains with a mallet, brushes off mortal wounds with one hand, and launches himself over castle walls with determination and deceptive ease. He is merciless on the warpath, devastating a legion of enemy soldiers by lashing them to a tree trunk that he places in the path of a lightning bolt. Baahubali's mom wields a severed head at one point. And did I mention that there's singing? Our heroes' actions are valorized through poetic, Greek chorus-like swooning that perfectly suits the film's paradoxically arch but playful tone.

This is a refreshingly irony-free depiction of demigod-like men and the values and family members they fight to protect. And for once in what feels like a long while, this type of old-fashioned entertainment works without feeling like a throwback or an homage to a preexisting work of pop art. I love "Baahubali 2," partly because it never once felt like a soul-less, committee-assembled piece of entertainment. Many American viewers may wonder how a film that received little to no media coverage could surpass "The Circle," a new studio-produced and distributed thriller starring Tom Hanks and Emma Watson , at the US box office. But you only have to see "Baahubali 2" to know why it enjoyed such a fantastic opening weekend. It's grandiose and fun, and I pray there's a lot more where it came from.

Baahubali 2: The Conclusion

• Amarendra Baahubali, the heir apparent to the throne of Mahishmati, finds his life and relationships endangered as his adoptive brother Bhallaladeva conspires to claim the throne.
• Kattappa narrates the story of Amarendra Baahubali to Shivudu, who learns his lineage as the prince of Mahishmati and the son of Amarendra Baahubali. Shivudu, now Mahendra Baahubali, decides to dethrone and punish Bhallaladeva for all wrongdoings of his past with the help of Kattappa.
• Upon listening to a narrative of his parents' love story and the treachery that led to his father's death, Shiva, the son of Bahubali, must claim his place as the rightful heir to the throne of the Mahishmati Kingdom, but first, he must avenge the injustice committed against his parents and people. — Santhosh
• Kattappa (Sathyaraj) continues to narrate how he ended up killing Amarendra Baahubali (Prabhas). After vanquishing the Kalakeyas, Amarendra Baahubali is declared as the future king of Mahishmati and Bhallaladeva (Rana Daggubati) is declared as the commander-in-chief. Before the coronation, Rajamatha Sivagami (Ramya Krishnan) begins to look for a bride for Amarendra. She instructs Amarendra and Kattappa to tour the kingdom to understand its current state and its people. Amarendra falls in love with Devasena (Anushka Shetty), a princess of the Kuntala kingdom (7.5 Yojanas in the North from Mahishmati) and the sister of the king of Kuntala. Bhallaladeva learns of Amarendra's attempts to woo Devasena and hatches a plot to drive a wedge between Amarendra and Sivagami by asking for Devasena's hand in marriage for himself. Sivagami, unaware that Amarendra is in love with Devasena, promises Devasena's hand in marriage to Bhallaladeva. Sivagami sends an emissary to the kingdom of Kuntala, who delivers the marriage proposal in a patronizing way. An insulted Devasena rejects the proposal with a scathing reply. Sivagami is enraged to hear Devasena's response and sends an order to Amarendra that Devasena be brought to Mahishmati as a captive. The kingdom of Kuntala is attacked by Pindaris, a Dacoit-like army. Amarendra, with the help of Devasena's maternal uncle, Kumara Varma (Subbaraju), is able to nullify the attack and save Kuntala. Amarendra reveals who he is, promises Devasena that he will protect her honor no matter what and convinces her to come with him to Mahismati as his future bride. Upon reaching Mahismati, the misunderstanding comes to light. When Sivagami delivers an ultimatum to Amarendra that he must either chose the throne or Devasena, he chooses Devasena. Bhallaladeva is crowned king and Amarendra is made the new commander-in-chief. During the coronation ceremony the citizens of Mahishmati clearly display their preference for Amarendra over Bhallaladeva. At Devasena's baby shower, Bhallaladeva relieves Amarendra of his duties as commander-in-chief so that Amarendra can be with his wife. Devasena immediately speaks out against the King's manipulation and the mute inaction of Sivagami. Due to further clashes, Devasena and Amarendra are banished from the Palace. Amarendra and Devasena live happily among the people. Bhallaladeva notices that to the people, Amarendra is their king, and hatches a plot with his father Bijjaladeva (Nassar) to convince Sivagami that Amarendra is trying to assassinate him. Bijjaladeva has a mock fight with Bhallaladeva where Bijjal tries to stop Bhalla from hatching a plot to kill Bahubali. The whole scene is witnessed by Kumara Varma. Bhalla throws Bijjala aside. Later, Kumara Varma meets Bijjala, and Bijjala convinces him to attack Bhalla to save Bahubali. Kumara Varma does, not knowing that he has walked into a trap & is killed by Bhalla. Sivagami, convinced that Bhallaladeva's life is under threat and open action would result in factions and civil war, orders Kattappa to assassinate Amarendra. Kattappa, bound by his word to serve the Queen, lures Amarendra by feigning he is in trouble, and then stabs him in the back and kills him. Kattappa learns of Bhallaladeva's treachery and informs Sivagami. Devasena too arrives to learn of her husband's death with her son, in her arms. Sivagami announces the panicked hordes outside her palace that Amarendra is dead and the baby, Mahendra Baahubali, is the new King. As Bhallaladeva and his men are about to seize the queen, she flees with baby Mahendra Baahubali. Devasena is taken prisoner for the next 25 years. The Kuntala Kingdom is destroyed completely by Bhallaladeva. The now ousted Kuntala King (Meka Ramakrishna), leads the rebel group that has indulged in guerrilla warfare against king Bhallaladeva. After listening to the whole story, Mahendra Baahubali alias Shivudu (Prabhas) decides to avenge his father's death by raising his own army with the help of Kattappa and returns to Mahishmati along with Avantika (Tamannaah) and the people of the city. Bhallaladeva once again kidnaps Devasena and seals the palace, but Baahubali, ingenious like his father, manages to enter the palace to capture Bhallaladeva. Bijjala Deva tries to brainwash Kattappa reminding him of his forefather's pledge of their allegiance to protect and defend the throne of Mahismati and their duty to be loyal to the king. Kattappa reminds him that Sivagami had declared Mahendra Baahubali king before her death 25 years back and hence his loyalties instead lie with the rightful king, Baahubali. Bhallaladeva is later defeated by Baahubali and burnt alive on a pyre prepared by Devasena. Ending the cruel regime of Bhallaladeva, Baahubali becomes the new King of Mahishmati with Avantika as his queen, declaring peace and harmony. In the end credits, a child is heard asking an elder whether the son of Mahendra Baahubali will become the next king of Mahishmati. To which, the elder replies: "Who knows what Lord Shiva is planning!"

The Conclusion is a film that is so in awe of its own grandiose canvas that it tends to lose sight at times of the need for tighter editing and more believable characterization. Just about everything in the film falls prey to the lure of excess.

For the most part, The Conclusion doesn't let us take our eyes off the screen. It's designed to be a cinematic celebration, one that deserves to be watched on the largest screen possible.

Indian cinephiles must salute Rajamouli for his vision and ambition. He once again gives us our Ben Hur and Ten Commandments experience rolled into one.

While it doesn't have the same panoramic adventure of its predecessor, it does make up with grand scale and precise execution. This movie is worth the hype.

Director Nag Ashwin's mega-budget film 'Kalki 2898 AD' is all over the news. Thanks to its extravagant visuals and ambition, which make it a theatre watch. However, is Prabhas-starrer 'Kalki 2898 AD's' story impactful enough? When compared to the epic film, 'Baahubali', a film from the same film industry, 'Kalki 2898 AD' doesn't get certain aspects right, especially the drama.

WHY WAS 'BAAHUBALI' MORE IMPACTFUL?

SS Rajamouli's 'Baahubali' was a drama film of epic propositions. What worked in the film is its drama. The filmmaker tapped into basic emotions of a human being, which made it a monumental film.

The 'RRR' director, whose budget keeps increasing with every passing film, makes it a point to concentrate more on human emotions.

Back in 2022, Rajamouli said, "Over the course of my career I learned that the stronger the emotions, or more basic the emotions, the more people tend to like your movie. That's what I have been doing. When I saw how 'Baahubali' was liked by the entire country, I realised that if films are based on stories driven by basic human emotions, they will have a wider reach."

This, by far, has been the mantra of all his films. Take, 'Baahubali', for example. It has all emotions - love, action, betrayal, friendship and brotherhood. When Kattappa kills Baahubali in a cliffhanger climax, you are shocked, and it's a question that made headlines for over a year.

WHERE 'KALKI 2898 AD' LACKED

Director Nag Ashwin's 'Kalki 2898 AD', despite raking in Rs 500 crore in its opening weekend , has many niggles in the story. What worked in 'Baahubali' lacked in 'Kalki 2898 AD'. The film has everything - a potential story, mammoth budget and actors from all industries.

However, the film lacks drama. There are multiple subplots in the film, but you get a déj vu feeling. The incoherent screenplay makes 'Kalki 2898 AD' fall short of being an epic film like 'Baahubali'. The subplots in 'Kalki 2898 AD' aren't fully explored, but unnecessarily stretched in the name of world-building.

Take, for example, Prabhas's introduction scene. We get how laid back Prabhas's Bhairava is. But, there's an extended fight sequence to mark his arrival. Similarly, when Amitabh Bachchan's Ashwattama and Prabhas's Bhairava meet, we get a marathon of action sequences. Though magnificently done, they are overlong. These set pieces act as a canvas to showcase the film's budget, but leave you with a lot of unanswered questions.

Even 'Baahubali' ended with the biggest unanswered question. However, it was done in a way that created curiosity. However, 'Kalki 2898 AD' ends on a more abrupt note.

The more you think about 'Kalki 2898 AD', the more questions arise, which leaves you with a bitter after-taste. The celebrity cameos , while they looked funny and elicited applause, hardly added value to the story.
