Topic 1 - Remote work and maintaining employee motivation

The notion of remote work has become widespread since the start of the crisis, the professional world and working methods having indeed been severely impacted by the health crisis. Problem: how to manage to keep motivation intact while working from home? How is this motivation essential for the continuity of the company's performance? First, give the main definitions, that of remote work and that of motivation . Talk about what has changed in the professional world and the psychological side of these changes for a large number of employees. Dealing with the importance of motivation, its relationship with the well-being of employees, but also with the performance of a group. Finally, talk about methods that allow you to keep motivation intact despite a troubling situation.

Topic 2 - Internal communication and remote work

Luckily, modes of communication have changed a lot, and even when employees work from home, they can come into contact with their company at any time. Problem: how does good internal communication guarantee better employee motivation? The first part can be devoted to the definitions and the links which exist between the concepts. In another part talk about the link between communication, involvement and motivation of employees. Also, give the advantages for employees of maintaining regular contact with their co-workers and not only with their manager. Finally, talk about the different modes of communication, and the link with new technologies and with company performance .

Topic 3 - Psychological well-being of employees: depression and remote work

The topics to be defined here are well-being at work and the link between depression and telework. Since the start of the health crisis and the successive confinements, a large number of employees have felt lost, and the rate of people with depression has also greatly increased. Problem: how can remotely work promote depression in certain employees, and how to maintain psychological well-being despite the current crisis? The first part deals with the link between well-being at work and performance, as well as the link between telework and depression. How to avoid episodes of depression? What is the manager's role? Talk about internal communication and employee involvement, how can you give teleworkers enough motivation to allow them to feel useful within the company?

Topic 4 - Telecommuting and performance

This topic is about remote work and performance. Two themes which are linked, especially now, when the health crisis is far from over. Problem: how can remote work be a driver of performance? To answer this question, the candidate can talk about remote work as a whole and give its main advantages. Also give the definition of performance, as well as the new work habits which today govern the professional lives of thousands of employees. What is the role of the manager? How is it possible to improve performance in new work habits that must be governed by learning autonomy and confidence?

Topic 5 - Perception of evaluation by teleworkers

This topic is about evaluation and remote work. To improve company performance and ensure that work gets done despite the distance, managers have implemented a control system. However, this system is not always well received by employees. Problem: how to set up an effective and non-intrusive control system for teleworkers? Define the different management methods and a fortiori of possible evaluations. Establish the link between controls, performance, trust and employee well-being. How do workers view the controls to which they are subject? What is the point of maintaining open communication with your team to get their feedback? What is the role of trust in management and in remote work? What is the correct organization to meet business requirements and performance? Surprising insights from EY’s survey of its U.S. hybrid, full in-person, and fully remote employees.

We’ve seen how fully remote work can lead to a loss of connection and development opportunities, particularly those that require observational learning, or learning by watching someone else do it. However, people still want to work from home at least some of the time because of the greater work-life balance and personal productivity that they experience. But what is the right amount of time to be in person? How can corporate policymakers and team leaders get the best of both worlds? The authors discuss how Ernst & Young LLP (EY U.S.) has taken a data-driven approach to questions around hybrid work. Their data comparing the performance and well-being of hybrid employees with their fully in-person and remote counterparts has yielded (often surprising) insights from which other organizations may benefit.

Despite years of effort and copious amounts of thought leadership (some of it of questionable value), leaders across industries are still struggling to figure out how to create policies that balance their desire to see employees back in the office with employees’ undiminished desire for flexibility. Managers are also struggling to make these arrangements and policies work and keep their teams engaged in an era of unprecedented uncertainty and burnout .

Bill Seeks to Limit Remote Work for Federal Workforce

Senators Question Remote Workers’ Productivity

Sens. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, and Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., introduced the Back to Work Act on May 7. The legislation limits remote work to 40 percent of the workdays in any given pay period, with certain exceptions. The bill also would require each federal agency to review and reauthorize each employee’s remote work agreement on an annual basis, and require agencies to monitor employees’ remote work productivity.

Federal officials have lauded remote work in the past as a key recruitment tool and a way to improve the federal workforce’s geographic diversity.

Three cuffed for 'helping North Koreans' secure remote IT jobs in America

Your local nail tech could be a secret agent for kim’s cunning plan.

Three individuals accused of helping North Korea fund its weapons programs using US money are now in handcuffs.

All three are said by Uncle Sam's prosecutors to have used different methods to evade sanctions against the hermit nation and extract money from America's economy to benefit the Kim Jong-Un regime.

Minh Phuong Vong, of Bowie, Maryland, who was arrested on Thursday morning and charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud, secured jobs under his own identity which were allegedly carried out by remote North Korean natives.

For years Kim Jong Un's regime has been deploying individuals with IT skills into the US workforce using various means to ultimately use their pay to fund programs back home. When the phenomenon was first made public by the US in 2022, it was believed some Nork software devs were each raking in compensation in excess of $300,000 a year.

Vong's alleged role in the conspiracy, at least according to the Feds, was to secure positions at companies and then outsource that work to North Koreans who could actually do the technical work, all while keeping a percentage of the salary for his trouble and funneling the rest back to Pyongyang. A Vietnam native, Vong was a naturalized US citizen who actually worked in a nail salon.

In one case, the complaint claimed, a CEO of a company hopped on a video call with Vong to verify his identity by holding up to the camera a copy of his US passport and state driving license. 

This was shortly after another individual, who was charged and named only as John Doe, applied for the same role and later appeared at work meetings after Vong was hired, the Feds allege. The complaint adds that they described themselves as a software developer working out of Shenyang, China, and claimed communications between Vong and John Doe indicated the dev was of North Korean descent.

Also arrested this week was US national Christina Marie Chapman, 49, of Litchfield Park, Arizona, who allegedly helped North Korea on an even grander scale. She was charged with conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to commit wire fraud, conspiracy to commit bank fraud, aggravated identity theft, conspiracy to commit identity fraud, conspiracy to launder monetary instruments, operating as an unlicensed money transmitting business, and unlawful employment of aliens.

Chapman was essentially accused of running a laptop farm – a residence in the US fitted with arrays of laptops that overseas or Nork workers can remote into and work from. The local IP address of the machines was intended to add a layer of perceived legitimacy to any remote work carried out for a US company, the DoJ claims.

According to the indictment [PDF] against Chapman, she allegedly helped North Korean workers defraud major US companies, more than 300 in total, including various blue-chip companies across multiple industries. 

Among the most high-profile victims in the alleged conspiracy were a "top-five national television network and media company," a Silicon Valley tech biz, an aerospace and defense company, an "iconic" American car brand, a luxury retail chain, and "one of the most recognizable media and entertainment companies in the world."

Data was also stolen from a multinational restaurant chain and class American clothing company, the indictment alleges.

Chapman is accused of helping overseas North Korean IT workers validate stolen US identities of which more than 60 are believed to have been compromised. 

A total of $6.8 million is thought to have been generated for overseas workers in the scheme Chapman allegedly helped facilitate.

There is currently a $5 million reward for information on three of the overseas workers Chapman helped via the State Department's Rewards for Justice program. The trio are officially referred to as John Doe 1, 2, and 3, but are known to use the aliases Jiho Han, Chunji Jin, and Haoran Xu. Deets about their manager "Zhonghua" could also yield a reward.

"On the surface, today's allegations of wire fraud, identity theft, and money laundering may read like a typical white collar or economic crime scheme," said Kevin Vorndran, assistant director at the FBI's Counterintelligence Division. 

"But what these allegations truly represent is a new high-tech campaign to evade US sanctions, victimize US businesses, and steal US identities. The charges clearly demonstrate how the FBI and its partners will employ every resource at our disposal to bring to justice anyone who helps North Korea evade sanctions."

"The FBI has long stated that cybersecurity is national security and this case is living proof of that," said Akil Davis, special agent in charge at the FBI's Phoenix Field Office. "That a woman living her quiet life in the outskirts of Phoenix can allegedly get so entangled in something like this clearly indicates our adversaries are getting more sophisticated and stealthier, so it's critical that businesses and citizens be hyper-vigilant with their cyber activities."

In October 2023, the US re-upped its awareness campaign of North Korea's tactics in this area, updating its guidance for organizations on how to spot a rogue Nork in the application process.

All things connected

At least some of the overseas workers who benefitted from Chapman's alleged crimes also worked with Ukrainian national Oleksandr Didenko, 27, of Kyiv, who was arrested earlier this month for similar matters.

Didenko is primarily accused of running the website UpWorkSell which claimed to offer overseas IT workers the opportunity to register on freelance IT job sites using identities other than their own to secure gig work at US-based companies.

He's alleged to have run this service from January 2018 onwards and believed that at least some of the website's users were North Korean.

Like Chapman, he's also accused of running a laptop farm. He was arrested in Poland at the request of Uncle Sam on May 7, and the US is currently trying to extradite him on charges of identity fraud.

UpWorkSell was just one website seized by the US as part of this latest clampdown on North Korea's attempts to extract money from the US economy while evading the litany of sanctions against it.

Twelve others that supported fraudulent North Korean workers bids to secure employment were also seized and are pictured in an unsealed affidavit [PDF]. Prosecutors said these were established by North Korean IT workers, working on behalf of China-based Yanbian 

Silverstar Network Technology and the Russia-based Volasys Silver Star, both of which were sanctioned in 2018.

The websites were developed clumsily, according to prosecutors, and signs such as awkward phrasing, poor grammar, and suspicious registered addresses (residences rather than office blocks) should have aroused suspicions from the get-go.

"The alleged schemes likely benefitted the Democratic People's Republic of Korea in evading US sanctions and victimizing American businesses," said Larissa L Knapp, executive assistant director of the FBI's National Security Branch. 

"By stealing the identities of American citizens to commit fraud, they obtained proceeds which likely helped fund the North Korean regime's priorities including nuclear weapons programs. The FBI and our partners are committed to rooting out insidious efforts that undermine our economic and national security." ®

"STAGGERING FRAUD" —

An Arizona woman has been accused of helping generate millions of dollars for North Korea’s ballistic missile program by helping citizens of that country land IT jobs at US-based Fortune 500 companies.

Christina Marie Chapman, 49, of Litchfield Park, Arizona, raised $6.8 million in the scheme, federal prosecutors said in an indictment unsealed Thursday. Chapman allegedly funneled the money to North Korea’s Munitions Industry Department, which is involved in key aspects of North Korea’s weapons program, including its development of ballistic missiles.

Part of the alleged scheme involved Chapman and co-conspirators compromising the identities of more than 60 people living in the US and using their personal information to get North Koreans IT jobs across more than 300 US companies.

In the indictment, prosecutors wrote:

The conspiracy perpetrated a staggering fraud on a multitude of industries, at the expense of generally unknowing US companies and persons. It impacted more than 300 US companies, compromised more than 60 identities of US persons, caused false information to be conveyed to DHS on more than 100 occasions, created false tax liabilities for more than 35 US persons, and resulted in at least $6.8 million of revenue to be generated for the overseas IT workers. The overseas IT workers worked at blue-chip US companies, including a top-5 national television network and media company, a premier Silicon Valley technology company, an aerospace and defense manufacturer, an iconic American car manufacturer, a high-end retail chain, and one of the most recognizable media and entertainment companies in the world, all of which were Fortune 500 companies.

As another part of the alleged conspiracy, Chapman operated a “laptop farm” at one of her residences to give the employers the impression the North Korean IT staffers were working from within the US; the laptops were issued by the employers. By using proxies and VPNs, the overseas workers appeared to be connecting from US-based IP addresses. Chapman also received employees’ paychecks at her home, prosecutors said.

Federal prosecutors said that Chapman and three North Korean IT workers—using the aliases of Jiho Han, Chunji Jin, Haoran Xu, and others—had been working since at least 2020 to plan a remote-work scheme. In March of that year, prosecutors said, an individual messaged Chapman on LinkedIn and invited her to “be the US face” of their company. From August to November of 2022, the North Korean IT workers allegedly amassed guides and other information online designed to coach North Koreans on how to write effective cover letters and résumés and falsify US Permanent Resident Cards.

Under the alleged scheme, the foreign workers developed “fictitious personas and online profiles to match the job requirements” and submitted fake documents to the Homeland Security Department as part of an employment eligibility check. Chapman also allegedly discussed with co-conspirators about transferring the money earned from their work.

“The charges in this case should be a wakeup call for American companies and government agencies that employ remote IT workers,” Nicole Argentieri, head of the Justice Department's Criminal Division, said . “These crimes benefited the North Korean government, giving it a revenue stream and, in some instances, proprietary information stolen by the co-conspirators.”

The indictment came alongside a criminal complaint charging a Ukrainian man with carrying out a similar multiyear scheme. Oleksandr Didenko, 27, of Kyiv, Ukraine, allegedly helped individuals in North Korea “market” themselves as remote IT workers.

Chapman was arrested Wednesday. It wasn’t immediately known when she or Didenko were scheduled to make their first appearance in court. If convicted, Chapman faces 97.5 years in prison, and Didenko faces up to 67.5 years.
