This project engages a cultural studies approach to translation. I investigate different thematic issues, each of which underscores the underpinning force of cultural translation. Chapter 1 serves as a theoretical background to the entire work, in which I review the development of translation studies in the Anglo-American world and attempt to connect it to subject theory, cultural theory, and social critical theory. The main aim is to show how translation constitutes and mediates subject (re)formation and social justice. From the view of translation as constitutive of political and cultural processes, Chapter 2 tells the history of translation in Vietnam while critiquing Homi Bhabha's notions of cultural translation, hybridity, and ambivalence. I argue that the Vietnamese, as historical colonized subjects, have always been hybrid and ambivalent in regard to their language, culture, and identity. The specific acts of translation that the Vietnamese engaged in throughout their history show that Vietnam during French rule was a site of cultural translation in which both the colonized and the colonizer participated in the mediation and negotiation of their identities. Chapter 3 presents a shift in focus, from cultural translation in the colonial context to the postcolonial resignifications of femininity. In a culture of perpetual translation, the Vietnamese woman is constantly resignified to suite emerging political conditions. In this chapter, I examine an array of texts from different genres - poetry, fiction, and film - to criticize Judith Bulter's notion of gender performativity. A feminist politics that aims to counter the regulatory discourse of femininity, I argue, needs to attend to the powerful mechanism of resignification, not as a basis of resistance, but as a form of suppression. The traditional binary of power as essentializing and resistance as de-essentializing does not work in the Vietnamese context. Continuing the line of gender studies, Chapter 4 enunciates a specific strategy for translating Annie Proulx's Brokeback Mountain into contemporary Vietnamese culture. Based on my cultural analysis of the discursive displacement of translation and homosexuality, I propose to use domesticating translation, against Lawrence Venuti's politics of foreignizing, as a way to counter the displacement and reinstate both homosexuality and translation itself.

Ph.D Thesis: Translation in Vietnam: A Case Study of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet

Profile image of Van Nhan Luong

2014, University of Southampton

Translation is not simply a transmission from one language to another language, but the bridge connecting languages, cultures, and people around the world throughout history, from past to present, in time and space. In the mutual relationship with literary systems, translation in some cases is the pioneer orienting domestic literature from stylistics, genres to content. Translation in Viet Nam, however, has never been studied systematically, and at present is like a chaotic market in which the rhythm of three main factors, translation, proof-reading, and criticism are marching to different tunes. The thesis focuses on evaluating the functions and contributions of translation in the development of literature and society in Vietnam. Besides, the thesis uses Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet as a case study to clarify problems in translation in Vietnam. The results synthesized from the formulation of research questions have revealed that translation in Vietnam is absolutely a great transformer of culture and a fertilizer of Vietnamese literature. The case study Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet has pointed out that present problems of translation in Vietnam are the shortage of criticism which consequently produces many poor quality translations called ‘disasters’, and of classic books for high education and research. Within deep analysis into the sematic features of the Vietnamese translation of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet in comparison to its Shakespeare’s English, the thesis has concluded that this translation, which has been used popularly in schools over fifty years, is no longer suitable for present audiences. It is, therefore, encouraged to re-translate the text. The thesis besides providing a whole picture of translation in Vietnam and insights into the practice of translating Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet into Vietnamese, is a valuable source for Vietnamese translation scholars to indicate strategies for the development of translation in Vietnam, and for Vietnamese translators to re-translate not only other plays of Shakespeare but also classical works of the world.

Translation has never been an easy task for translators, who can be remarkably good at languages, and speak rapidly in communication, but find themselves in difficulty even it is intralingual or extralingual translation. To have a good translation, there are both objective and subjective conditions affecting translators. This study, by applying the theories of translation strategies and translation procedures suggested by Peter Newmark, Mona Baker and other scholars, has compared and contrasted the similarities and differences as well as the changes in terms of semantic features between the Shakespeare's English and the Vietnamese translation of Romeo and Juliet by Dang The Binh. It is found that Omission is the most typical strategy used while other strategies appeared with different frequency, which objectively affects the quality of the Vietnamese translation of Romeo and Juliet.

All kinds of art performance in human society are the ways to send messages to the viewers, listeners or audiences. Art performance is also a means of translation to transfer the organisers', the authors', and the products' ideas. This study, in the light of translatability of performance, highlights the features of theatre translation including its theory and discusses the history and development of drama translation on stage performance in Vietnam with a consideration of Shakespeare's plays as a case study. The study has found that while drama translation has been studied widely in the world this area of research has been superficially concerned in Vietnam. Shakespeare's plays have been translated for performance for a long time in neighbourhood countries, such as Japan, China and Thailand, Vietnam has not got itself full translations, but some adaptations.

International Journal of English Language and Translation Studies

Cultural differences are always the great challenges for translators in the translation process. When dealing with cultural barrier, metaphor is a typical struggle, in which Proper names necessitate consideration because the translation might cause confused and misunderstood as well as negative feelings of the readers to the original text. A name can be popular used in a source culture (SC) or a country but too strange or the taboo in a target culture (TC). This study, by applying both qualitative and quantitative research methods, has described and compared the translations of proper names in the Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet and its Vietnamese translation by Dang The Binh. The findings reveal that besides similarities, when using popular proper names, English and Vietnamese cultures have many different names that require careful analysis and understanding of the translator. It is concluded that foreignization and domestication should be applied flexibly in order to introduce a friendly translation that honors both the SC and the TC.

Translation is the bridge connecting languages, cultures, and people around the world throughout history, from past to present, in time and space. The quality of translation affects the closeness and tightness of those connections. A translation can cause misconceptions, contort tone, and misinterpret cultural references, while a translation can also bring a positive impression to foreign readers not only of the text, but also of the country, people, and culture of origin. In Translation Studies, faithfulness is the central concern of philological theories that focus on literary genres, stylistics, and rhetoric between the Source Language (SL) and Target Language (TL). Translating literary and dramatic texts for stage performance, especially Shakespeare’s plays, always requires specific criteria to convey the original meanings as well as the performability, in which the poetic feature is the most difficult task for any translator. This study, based on this fundamental principle, compares and contrasts the original text of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet with its Vietnamese translation by Dang The Binh to examine how much the translator has done to maintain the rhythmic and speech patterns. It is concluded that the Vietnamese translation was unable to maintain the Iambic Pentameter of the Source Text (ST) while other rhythmic syllables were conveyed randomly.

Equivalence has been the central concern in Translation Studies and always challenges the translator's abilities. Equivalence is also the factor determining the closeness of target text (TT) to the source text (ST). By applying the theories suggested by Vinay and Darbelnet, Nida and Taber, Catford, Baker, House and Pym, as well as the qualitative method to describe the semantic features of the ST and the TT, this study has investigated and compared the Shakespeare's English and the Vietnamese translation of Romeo and Juliet by Dang The Binh to find out the levels of equivalence in regards to semantic features. It has been found that both objective and subjective factors, in which language differences, culture and the translator's ability are the keys affecting the orientation of choosing equivalents of the translator. It is, therefore, no unique type of equivalence in the Vietnamese translation, but the mixture of dynamic equivalence and formal equivalence. As a result, the translation is partly covert and also partly overt.

This paper discusses the main challenges that face literary translation and literary translators. These challenges have been divided into three main categories: Linguistic, cultural, and human. The first type of challenges comes from the nature of the discipline itself since it involves the difficult task of dealing with phonological, syntactic, lexical, semantic, stylistic and pragmatic issues occurring in literary texts whose language is additionally characterized by its linguistic deviation from the norm, especially in its use of figurative language. The second source of challenges stems from the fact that literary translation is primarily concerned with translating culture-bound expressions and concepts which pose one of the most difficult tasks for translators when trying to render them into a foreign language. The third type of challenges is related to the barriers facing literary translation including lack of government funding, poor literary translator training, language and...

Inside Seattle’s burgeoning community of literary translators

A recent visit by Korean-to-English translator Anton Hur exemplified a growing appreciation for the work as an art form in an increasingly diverse city.

A person sits casually in an armchair posing for the camera

Writer and translator Anton Hur recently visited Seattle from Seoul to lecture at the University of Washington, focusing on “the idea of voice in literary translation.” (Caroline Walker Evans for Cascade PBS)

Anton Hur has translated horror, fantasy and historical fiction. He’s wrestled with what kind of voice a dragon has and how to create the appropriate tone for a person who’s depressed. And he’s co-translated Beyond the Story: 10-Year Record of BTS — a volume of 500-plus pages — with only a month to finish the translation.

That last one was hard. “The book was being written as we were translating it,” Hur said. “Like logistically it was a complete, utter nightmare.”

Hur said he did it out of gratitude to ARMY, BTS’s fan base, for buying, reading and talking about Korean books in translation.

During his public lecture April 30 at the University of Washington, Hur spoke on the struggles literary translators share, including the disorienting experience of translating very different authors in successive projects.

His visit to Seattle highlighted the city’s growing interest in literary translation, as its population becomes increasingly diverse.

The world of literary translation

Literary translation is a subset of the field that involves translating poems, novels and plays from one language to another. Unlike working on business documents or technical manuals, literary translation requires special attention to the author’s writing style.

Translation differs from interpretation: While translators work with written texts, interpreters help people understand spoken language.

By rendering books written in other languages accessible to new audiences, literary translators help increase appreciation for diversity.

For Hur, translating Korean books into English allows him to share aspects of his home culture in a more complex and nuanced way. That philosophy helps him choose which books to translate.

A person poses for a photo in front of landscape art and books

Renowned Korean-to-English translator Anton Hur. (Caroline Walker Evans for Cascade PBS)

“My translation project as a whole is about showcasing a Korea that is not what the mainstream cultural production would have you believe,” Hur said. “As in I want to showcase a Korea that’s more diverse. That’s more feminist. That’s more edgy.”

One book Hur chose to translate was Bora Chung’s Cursed Bunny , which critiques capitalism and other systems embedded in Korean society. It isn’t what people might expect from K-dramas, which present a Korea that is heteronormative, capitalist and reluctant to critique its own systems, Hur said.

The burgeoning literary translation field has found a growing home in Seattle, which has fostered an international reputation as a literary center. In 2017, Seattle was designated a UNESCO City of Literature , a title shared by only one other U.S. city, for its thriving publishing industry, independent bookstores and literary events, among other factors.

Even Seattle-based Amazon has done its part to push international literature by launching Amazon Crossing . The imprint was lauded in 2015 by The Guardian for publishing three times as many works in translation as its nearest U.S. competitor.

The trials of literary translation

Shelley Fairweather-Vega, a Russian-to-English literary translator, said she thinks people have become more aware that a translation isn’t just retyping a text in another language.

“I have to generate a brand-new book or a brand-new poem in which all the words are mine,” Fairweather-Vega said. “So none of those were dictated to me. It’s only the ideas that are in place … it takes creativity. It’s working within constraints.”

The nuances of language that a translator must navigate is what English-to-French translator Emy Chevalier thinks of when she wonders how AI will affect the translation industry.

“I think it would be more useful to see [AI] more as a tool than as something that will take over, because it will never be able to translate an emotion or choose a very specific word that will have an impact on the reader,” Chevalier said.

Despite the growing visibility of their work, literary translators’ wages haven’t kept up.

In 2022, the Authors Guild’s voluntary survey of U.S. literary translators found that 63.5% of the nearly 300 respondents reported receiving less than $10,000 from literary translation in 2021. Only 11.5% of respondents relied on literary translation work as their sole source of income.

Despite that low reported figure, interpreters and translators as a whole are in demand, with a median income of $57,090 in 2023, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics . This median income includes people who translate and interpret in more common interactions such as legal issues, medical appointments and schools. The field of interpretation and translation as a whole is expected to grow by 4% over the next 10 years because of the country’s increasing diversity, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Fairweather-Vega observed that some literary translators think talking about money is distasteful because they see literary translation as an art, not as a profit-maker. She sees that attitude as self-defeating, she said.

“We can still love it and still consider it an art form,” Fairweather-Vega said. “But we can also get paid for it.”

Literary translators in training

These shared experiences have helped solidify the local literary-translator community, especially visible during Hur’s visit, which drew a wide audience of students, professionals and community members.

It was sponsored primarily by the UW Translation Studies Hub , a center funded by the Simpson Center for the Humanities that hosts events and lectures related to translation as well as develops translation-focused educational resources for graduate and undergraduate courses. Founded in 2019, the TSH grew out of an idea pitched in a dissertation by Katie King, who was pursuing her Ph.D. in Hispanic Studies at UW after returning from a stint in London and finding few groups in Seattle focused on translation of books, poetry and literature.

Sasha Senderovich, one of three faculty members leading the TSH this year, said that one of its priorities has been engaging the public outside of the university, including local translators. Their work has paid off, he said.

“All of the work over the past five years is very evident as we put together [Hur’s] visit,” Senderovich said. “Because the effortlessness with which people are agreeing to participate in various events is really stunning.”

One literary translator who attended Hur’s lecture was Takami Nieda. An instructor at Seattle Central College, Nieda has recently been teaching a translation course. She said that the community college’s diverse student body includes many whose native languages aren’t English and who possess proficiency in other languages. This course is a way to leverage that and also challenge the status quo in which literary translators are overwhelmingly white – a conclusion supported by the 2022 Authors Guild survey , which found that 80.6% of literary translators surveyed were white.

“It was important to me to actually reach translators of color, immigrant populations, because there is a whiteness problem in the translation field and so we wanted to kind of open up access for [the] publish[ing] industry, an industry which is by and large a white space,” Nieda said.

Seattle has had a growing immigrant population for decades – which not only shows increasing need for local translation services but also could provide a potentially diverse pool of translators. Five-year estimates across 2017-2021 found that about 22.1% of Seattle residents ages 5 and up spoke a language other than English, according to a report from the city’s Office of Immigrant and Refugee Affairs. The top 5 languages spoken in Seattle were Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese, Somali and Tagalog, the report said.

Seattle numbers mirror regional and national statistics. In Washington, 21.1% of households speak a language other than English at home, according to estimates from the 2022 American Community Survey run by the U.S. Census. The national average is 22.0%, plus or minus 0.1 percentage points.

Aria Fani, another faculty member leading the TSH with Senderovich, said he sees the hub’s work as a lifeline for the humanities and foreign-language study at the university, which has seen drops in funding and enrollment in recent years.

With those cuts, UW’s claims about being a humanistic institution that exposes students to the world and supports public-facing scholarship fall empty, Fani said.

“They only pay lip service to that,” Fani said. “We actually do it. We bring in the community.”

Brilliant drafts for your business studies course, ranging from market analysis to business proposal, can also be done by them. Be it any kind of a draft- the experts have the potential to dig in deep before writing. Doing ‘my draft’ with the utmost efficiency is what matters to us the most.

Finished Papers
