REPORT: Friedman Says Sharks Considering Jeff Blashill As Head Coach; Marek Theorizes Marco Sturm To San Jose

O n the 32 Thoughts Podcast , Elliotte Friedman says the San Jose Sharks are considering Jeff Blashill as the next head coach, while his co-host Jeff Marek has a theory that Marco Sturm could join the Sharks organization.

"I am going to put another name here, and it is a new one. It is Jeff Blashill from Tampa Bay," Friedman said. "Former head coach of [the Detroit Red Wings]. I would like to see Jeff Blashill get a second chance. I like to see what people learn after their first time through. I think Blashill is someone they are considering."

Blashill has been an assistant coach for the Tampa Bay Lightning since 2022. He coached the Red Wings from 2015 to 2022. He has extensive developmental coaching experience, having also been the head coach for the AHL's Grand Rapids Griffins and the head coach of Western Michigan in the NCAA from 2010 to 2011.

Blashill also has experience as an assistant coach in the NCAA and was a GM/head coach in the USHL for the Indiana Ice. 

Blashill went 204-261-72 as the head coach of the Red Wings. He made the postseason during his first season but lost in five games to the Lightning.

Jeff Marek theorized Marco Sturm would be a good fit for the Sharks as the next head coach. Although Sturm has been rumored, there hasn't been any substantial evidence supporting he is under consideration. 

"I am getting to the point where I think the Los Angeles Kings are going to have to make a decision on Sturm," Friedman said. "Is he going to proceed with their organization, or is he going to have to end up somewhere else?"

Marek chimed in with his theory.

"Well, you know my theory is San Jose," he said.

Sturm is currently the head coach of the AHL's Ontario Reign, which is still in the Calder Cup Playoffs.

Sturm played eight years in San Jose, from 1997 to 2005. He was among the leading players the Sharks traded to Boston for Joe Thornton. 

Sturm has been the head coach of Germany's national team, an assistant coach for the Kings, and now the head coach of their AHL team. He's been the head coach of the Reign since 2022. With his track record, he is one of the best coaching candidates for the entire NHL.

The Sharks' coaching interview reports have been quiet. Only Sheng Peng's report that assistant coach Ryan Warsofsky has been interviewed is now known. Add Blashill to the list of reported coaches, but nothing has been said about whether he's been interviewed.

Chiefs' Harrison Butker blasted for commencement speech encouraging women to be homemakers

Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker has aggravated one of the internet's biggest culture wars by telling a class of college graduates that one of the “most important” titles a woman can hold is homemaker.

During a commencement speech last weekend at Benedictine College, a Catholic liberal arts school in Atchison, Kansas, the NFL player railed against abortion, Pride month and Covid-19 lockdown measures.

Drawing the most viral backlash this week, however, was a section of his speech in which he addressed the female graduates specifically — telling them that it’s women who have had “the most diabolical lies” told to them.

“How many of you are sitting here now, about to cross this stage, and are thinking about all the promotions and titles you are going to get in your career? Some of you may go on to lead successful careers in the world,” Butker said. “But I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world.”

The criticisms that followed took aim at Butker as well as the NFL.

"Hey @NFL — If you want to continue to grow your female fan base and any other marginalized group (straight white men are already watching your product), come get your boy," wrote Lisa Guerrero, a former NFL sideline reporter and now an investigative journalist for "Inside Edition."

He went on to tell the graduates that his wife would agree that her life “truly started when she began living her vocation as a wife and as a mother.” It is her embrace of this role, he said, that made his own professional success possible.

Butker’s comments share similarities with some of the more extreme ideas around gender roles that have gained traction in communities that promote “ tradwife ” lifestyles or other relationship dynamics that center on traditional gender roles .

“Listen, there’s nothing wrong with his wife being a homemaker. Homemakers are wonderful, that’s not the point,” filmmaker Michael McWhorter, known by his more than 6 million TikTok followers as TizzyEnt, said in a video response. “The point is he seemed to be acting as if you should be ashamed if you don’t want to be a homemaker, or, ‘I know what you really want to do is just stay home and have babies.’"

The speech was the latest incident to add fuel to the flames of this increasingly vocal cultural battle, much of which is playing out online. While many prominent right-wing men have voiced such beliefs before, they’re usually confined to internet forums, podcasts and other online communities where these ideologies thrive.

A spokesperson for Butker did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Benedictine College and the Kansas City Chiefs did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

A spokesperson for the NFL told People Magazine that Butker "gave a speech in his personal capacity" and his "views are not those of the NFL as an organization."

"The NFL is steadfast in our commitment to inclusion, which only makes our league stronger," a spokesperson told the publication.

Butker, who is teammates with Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, further drew surprise and criticism when he quoted Kelce’s girlfriend, Taylor Swift, whose monumental career success as a global pop star has inspired college courses .

“As my teammate’s girlfriend says, ‘familiarity breeds contempt,’” he said, drawing murmurs from the crowd as he used the “Bejeweled” lyric as an analogy for why Catholic priests should not become “overly familiar” with their parishioners.

In the days since his speech, a Change.org petition for the Chiefs to dismiss Butker for “discriminatory remarks” has garnered nearly 19,000 signatures.

“These comments reinforce harmful stereotypes that threaten social progress,” the petition stated. “They create a toxic environment that hinders our collective efforts towards equality, diversity and inclusion in society. It is unacceptable for such a public figure to use their platform to foster harm rather than unity.”

Those who criticized Butker’s speech online include actor Bradley Whitford as well as DJ and rapper (and self-proclaimed Swiftie ) Flavor Flav .

But his speech was also lauded by some on the religious right, including conservative sports media personalities such as Clay Travis and Jason Whitlock , who defended Butker’s statements toward women.

“Not a word Harrison Butker says here should be remotely controversial. He’s 100% correct,” former NFL wide receiver T.J. Moe posted on X . “Those trying to convince women that being assistant VP of lending & intentionally childless at age 40 is more fulfilling than making a family and home are evil.”

Sports and culture commentator Jon Root also posted that Butker “exposed the lies that the world has been telling women.” Women, he wrote, are wrongly encouraged to climb the corporate ladder, view children as a “burden” and see marriage as “not worth pursuing.”

Still, a deluge of viewers online took issue with his attitude toward women and the LGBTQ community. Many women also rejected the premise that they would be happier staying at home in lieu of paid work, even if they do have a husband and children.

“I am moved. I actually had no idea that my life began when I met my husband,” neurosurgeon Betsy Grunch, known as Ladyspinedoc on TikTok, said sarcastically in a TikTok video . “It did not begin when I graduated magna cum laude from the University of Georgia with honors. It certainly did not begin when I graduated with a 4.0 GPA, Alpha Omega Alpha, from medical school. And I had no idea that it did not begin when I completed my residency in neurosurgery.”

'Today was a special moment': Durfee names softball field after legendary coach

FALL RIVER — One of Sarah Stack's memories of former Durfee legendary softball head coach Steve Winarski is his hat.

After every win, Winarski took his cap off and presented the brim to Stack and her Fall River teammates while pointing at the letters 'win' that he scripted with a pen.

At the time, Stack had no idea that a small word meant so much in many different levels.

"Although (Winarski) was a very good coach at teaching us how to win on the field, when he took his hat off he at that point meant something bigger," said Stock who played on the Hilltoppers 2004 state championship team. "He was instilling the mindset of what's important now. It was teaching us to win every day on and off the field."

Winarski was honored on Tuesday in front of a large gathering, family, school and city officials including Mayor Paul Coogan during a field dedication in his name at the new state-of-the-art, multi-purpose turf field on the campus of B.M.C. Durfee High School.

"Having the field dedicated to me means I did my job to the best of my ability," Winarski said. "I did not work a day of my life because I did what I loved. I'll miss the teaching, the preparation, the camaraderie, the kids and teaching the non-believers. It's a beautiful field."

Longtime Diman head softball coach Cathie Noversa said Winarski was a mentor to her as a player for the Hilltoppers in 1982-85. She recalled her transformation as a freshman when Winarski made her a catcher.

"He taught me the in(s) and out(s) as a catcher and I loved it, I was hooked" said Noversa, who is a Durfee Hall of Famer. "The few weeks I spent under Steve's tutelage, made me one of the best catchers to graduate Durfee High. I've been molded as player by many coaches in my athletic career and Steve among others was part of the reasons I became a coach."

Winarski won two state titles — 1998 and 2004, claimed three South Sectional titles and seven Big 3 Conference crowns. He finished with 220 career wins. Winarski was a freshman coach and an assistant to Noversa at Diman from 2012 to 2018.

"The kids were clueless of who this man was," Noversa said about Winarski. "All they knew, they were having fun. His words, his demeanor and the way he explained the game to them was mesmerizing.

Winarski joked afterward about not coaching on his field with his name attached because it has a fence. He stayed for the Durfee vs. Diman softball matchup at night and was on 'Fred-TV' until the end.

Durfee athletic director Brad Bustin also presented Winarski with a plaque, commemorating the field dedication.

The Hilltoppers managed to make the night extra special, grabbing a 9-2 win over the Bengals.

"Today was a special moment," Winarski said.

Stroudsburg coach, famed Pa. wrestler, killed in crash: reports

Stroudsburg Area School District’s athletic director and wrestling coach - considered one of Pennsylvania’s all-time great wrestlers - has been identified as the victim of a fatal Saturday night crash, according to Poconos-area media.

The Monroe County Coroner has identified Sean Richmond, age 38, as the man killed in a collision that occurred around 6 p.m. along the northbound side of Interstate 380 in Tobyhanna Township, according to WNEP , WFMZ , the Morning Call , and other outlets.

Pennsylvania State Police said Sunday they are investigating an incident in which a tractor-trailer struck a pedestrian along the interstate.

The coroner reported that Richmond was on his way to the high school prom held at Kalahari Resorts, a hotel and convention center located immediately adjacent to I-380, according to WNEP.

Richmond graduated from Easton High School in 2004, where he posted a 109-26 win-loss wrestling record that included multiple individual championships as well as four years of Easton winning the PIAA Class 3A team tournament, according to the Morning Call.

Richmond graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 2008, and celebrated his 100th win as Stroudsburg’s head wrestling coach in late 2023, according to WFMZ.

Richmond leaves behind a wife and two young daughters, according to a social media tribute from former Easton coach Steven Powell .

State police are asking anyone with further information about Saturday’s collision to contact the Stroudsburg barracks at 570-619-6800.

What separates new Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald? Analyst dives in

When the Seattle Seahawks hired Mike Macdonald as new their head coach in January, they got a defensive guru who could be shaping the next wave of modern NFL defenses.

The 36-year-old Macdonald had a success-filled two-year run as Baltimore’s defensive coordinator, overseeing a Ravens defense that became the first in NFL history to lead the league in points allowed per game, sacks and takeaways this past season. Macdonald’s defensive scheme features a unique level of versatility and interchangeability, which allows him to constantly mix his fronts and pressures to confuse opposing offenses.

Macdonald is now busy installing his scheme in Seattle, but his impact stretches far beyond the Pacific Northwest. Four of his previous assistant coaches became NFL defensive coordinators this offseason, which means there likely will be five NFL teams running some version of Macdonald’s defense this year.

Ted Nguyen of The Athletic delved into Macdonald’s defensive scheme in an article titled ‘ How Mike Macdonald has NFL offenses guessing and defenses following his lead ‘ that was published Monday. Nguyen then joined Seattle Sports’ Bump and Stacy on Tuesday to discuss what the Seahawks’ defense will look like under their cutting-edge coach.

‘The Sean McVay defense’

Los Angeles Rams coach Sean McVay is widely considered one of the brightest offensive minds in the game. He brought an offensive philosophy to the Rams that was centered on an “ illusion of complexity ,” with a vast multitude of plays built on a limited number of formations and personnel groupings. Nguyen said Macdonald’s defense stems from a similar idea.

“Macdonald doesn’t run a ton of different defensive fronts,” Nguyen said. “But out of those fronts, he could run any pressure he wants, and then he could add different layers to it by switching this player here and there. That just presents a different type of presentation for the offense that they have to be prepared for.”

The crux of it all is positional versatility. Macdonald has an aggressive defensive approach, but Nguyen pointed out that he doesn’t actually blitz all that often. Instead, he uses a lot of simulated pressures – which is when one or more blitzers are sent from the second or third levels of the defense, coupled with one or more defensive linemen dropping into coverage. That allows the defense to create a vast number of looks, leaving opposing offenses struggling to determine where the pressure will come from.

“They create a lot of pressure on offenses just with all the different looks they give,” Nguyen said. “So as an offense, I have to be prepared for everything out of these fronts.”

A different way of teaching

One of the biggest keys to positional versatility in Macdonald’s defense, according to Nguyen, is the unique way he teaches his blitzes. Nguyen explained that most teams attach their pressures to specific defensive fronts, whereas Macdonald attaches his pressures to patterns. As a result, players end up learning the entire pressure pattern instead of just their individual roles. That allows them to better understand what their teammates are doing, and it ultimately enables them to switch positions and apply pressure from a wide variety of players and spots on the field.

“Macdonald teaches blitz patterns,” Nguyen said. “So he’s teaching, ‘OK, instead of this linebacker blitzing the A-gap, this player has to blitz in this A-gap. And if this player blitzes this A-gap, then this player on the weak side has to drop.’ Everybody kind of knows what each other is doing, so you could change up the front and you could change up which player is doing which job. … They’re just really learning the blitz as a whole, and that way everybody’s interchangeable.

“For the defense, it’s very inexpensive,” he added, “because we’re learning this one pressure pattern and they could run it from 10 different presentations. So for the offense, they have to prepare for 10 different blitzes potentially, whereas the defense is like, ‘We’re just running this one thing out of different presentations, because the way we learned it, we could easily switch things up.'”

Nguyen said Macdonald’s teaching acumen is ultimately what separates him as a coach.

“Even as he was becoming the Ravens’ defensive coordinator, the thing that I just kept on hearing about him is he’s a great teacher and he understands how players learn,” Macdonald said. “And I think that’s one of the things that really separates him as a coach and really kind of defines his system. I think a lot of systems are defined by schemes and fronts and coverages. But I think with Macdonald’s system, it’s really defined by how it’s organized and how it’s taught.

“You could apply any different schemes to the way he organizes things and the way he thinks through things. … What’s going to make him a great head coach is that he understands what players are thinking and how he can just make it easy on them on gameday, as far as learning what they need to learn and just executing on a field.”

Can Macdonald’s success be replicated in Seattle?

Macdonald’s league-best defense in Baltimore had a collection of star power that included four Pro Bowlers – defensive lineman Justin Madubuike, linebacker Roquan Smith, linebacker Patrick Queen and safety Kyle Hamilton. The Seahawks don’t appear to have that same level of talent on defense – at least not yet. So, even with the addition of Macdonald and his defensive scheme, how much improvement can reasonably be expected from a Seattle defense that finished 24th in points allowed last season?

“It’s definitely going to be adjustment period, and I wouldn’t expect the Seahawks to all of a sudden become a top-three type of defense right off the bat,” Nguyen said. “But again, I think with him being able to be so flexible and having the defense present so many problems for an offense as far as preparing for it and not knowing where the blitz is coming from, I think they should be better in that aspect of just really testing out offenses.

“There’s a lot of potential in these guys playing in this type of scheme and having an upgrade schematically, (and) just being able to be more organized and having better game plans against teams,” he added. “But it’ll take some time for the Seahawks’ personnel to kind of catch up to the Ravens and really have that defense challenging for a top-three type of spot.”

Says he'll fast-track the struggling senators by focusing on accountability, social sharing.

After seven straight playoff misses for the Ottawa Senators, new head coach Travis Green says he welcomes the pressure that comes with getting them there.

"I want to win a Stanley Cup and I'm going to push this team to get to that place," said Green, who was officially unveiled as the new head coach on Wednesday.

Green is taking the reins from interim head coach Jacques Martin, who led the team after D.J. Smith was fired in December .

Martin, who previously coached the Senators from 1996-2004, is staying on as an adviser to help the team transition leadership.

Ottawa started searching for a new coach midway through the season and interviewed around a half dozen people, according to Senators president of hockey operations and general manager Steve Staios.

"Not always do you land on what we feel is a perfect fit for our group," Staios said. "The things that we value from Travis [are] his leadership, his passion, his experience, his ability to develop players." 

The 53-year-old from Castlegar, B.C., isn't new to the NHL scene, having played for five teams over 15 seasons from 1992 to 2007. He served as head coach for the Vancouver Canucks for four-plus seasons from 2017 until 2021.

Under Green, the Canucks posted a 133-147-34 record and made the playoffs in 2020 season, only to be knocked out in the second round by Vegas in Game 7. 

He also had an 8-12-1 record this past season as the interim head coach of the New Jersey Devils. 

Despite Green's lack of NHL playoff success, Staios said he's confident in his abilities and that choosing a coach goes "a lot deeper than looking at win-loss records" 

'Young, talented team'

Green said he'd had his eye on the Senators for a while, describing them as "a very young, talented team that also has a lot of room to grow." He faced them twice while leading the Devils.

He said he plans to fast-track them to the top by focusing on accountability and identifying the right roles within the team.

"Players want to know where they stand. They want to know what's expected of them. And that starts with communicating and [having] open and honest discussion with players," he said. 

"If you want to have accountability you got to be able to express to your players what's expected, and that process takes a little time. Any winning team has accountability within their group, and that doesn't happen overnight."

As a self-proclaimed "firm" and "detailed" coach who can be "demanding," Green said he's still approachable and that players will know he wants the best out of them.

"I know what it means to coach in Canada," he said. "I know how bad the people in Ottawa want to win, and I'm going to give everything I can."
