Bristol University is offering 400 fully funded postgraduate scholarships:Apply Now

The new £4.2m annual investment – totalling £16.8m over the next four years – opens up Bristol’s world-leading research to a global audience and helps shape the next generation of postgraduate researchers.

The University of  Bristol Postgraduate Research Scholarships  will be available across the University’s six Faculties and 25 Schools, creating a breadth of new and diverse research.

Scholars will receive a stipend and have their tuition fees covered as they break new ground on topics as varied as climate change, medical engineering and atmospheric chemistry.

Prospective postgraduate research students can apply for funding towards tuition fees and living costs

They are offering 100 new fully funded postgraduate research scholarships for the 2022/23 academic year.

The University of Bristol has announced it will create 400 new postgraduate scholarships. The new £4.2m annual investment – totalling £16.8m over the next four years – opens up Bristol’s world-leading research to a global audience and will help to shape the next generation of postgraduate researchers …

The University of Bristol’s new postgraduate research scholarships will be available across the university’s six faculties and 25 schools, creating a breadth of new and diverse research. Scholars will receive a stipend and have their tuition fees covered as they break new ground on topics as varied as climate change, medical engineering and atmospheric chemistry.

Bristol postgraduates have recently discovered how city gardens create an important supply of energy-rich nectar and how the biggest dinosaurs evolved from their smaller ancestors. Meanwhile, Science Creates, founded by former Bristol postgraduate researcher Dr Harry Destecroix, has opened its second specialised incubator in Bristol.

Says Professor Hugh Brady (pictured below), Vice-Chancellor and President at the University of Bristol: ‘Postgraduate researchers not only push the boundaries of their fields, but also build the world of tomorrow. They are responsible for world-changing ideas and technologies that we may all one day rely on. Many also go on to teach the next generation of students and researchers. This is a huge moment for the future of academic research.’

Professor Robert Bickers, Associate Pro-Vice Chancellor for Postgraduate Research, adds: ‘The story of research at the university across its history to date has very much been shaped by its postgraduate researchers. They shape the university itself, and their impact across the international research landscape, and throughout societies and around the world has been profound. We face many challenges globally as we look forward to the post-pandemic world, and these new researchers trained here will be at the forefront in tackling these. I am delighted to see this increased investment for postgraduate research that will build on, and expand, Bristol’s tradition.’

From barefoot student to Bristol scholar

When Bongai Munguni came to the University of Bristol on a scholarship in 2019 it was the first time she had left Africa, but it was just one of  many long journeys she had taken for her education . Bongai walked barefoot for eight hours every day to go to primary school and did her homework by the light of fires in her Mozambique village. She studied for secondary education in the evenings and small hours, rising early each morning to work on a tea plantation.

‘I am so happy that Bristol has announced these scholarships,’ she says. ‘Learning at an institute where the textbooks you are using are written by your professors is truly amazing. At Bristol you don’t just study at one of the world’s top universities but you also have links with other top universities all around the world.’

When Bongai graduates in two years she hopes to become a professor – perhaps via post-doc work at Harvard or Oxford – as well as a social entrepreneur.

About the fully funded PhD Scholarships in the UK

As part of the University of Bristol’s major new investment in PhD scholarships, the faculty of life science is pleased to be able to offer fully-funded University of Bristol PhD studentships to start in September 2022. These 4-year PhD scholarships cover tuition fee and provide a stipend and research costs to support you during studies. The university have prioritized two areas for scholarships – funding for  international students  and co-funded projects with  industry partners .  The University of Bristol is committed to equality, diversity and inclusion and we welcome and encourage applications from across the world and from minority and under-represented backgrounds. The Faculty is currently advertising 60 projects available for international students , covering our wide portfolio of research on life sciences areas of global importance, including but not limited to:

Benefit fully funded PhD Scholarships in the UK

The fully funded PhD scholarship will offer the following benefits:

• A 4-year PhD studentship with a range of research training opportunities, including short courses in research, statistical, computational and generic skills
• A tax-free stipend of £15,609 per year
• Up to £7,500 of research costs per year, depending on topic

Eligibility fully funded PhD Scholarships in the UK

To be eligible to apply you  must be an international student  (i.e. not eligible for home UK tuition fee).  You will need to hold a first or upper second-class honours degree (or international equivalent) in a relevant biomedical science discipline or psychology.  And if English is not your first language, then you need to meet the English language requirements for your chosen School.

We invite you to apply for a PhD studentship project hosted by the University of Bristol Business School in collaboration with the Innovation Knowledge Centre on Semiconductor Technology (REWIRE), a newly established £11 million research centre driving the UK towards net-zero goals by innovating in semiconductor technology.

This studentship focuses on leading-edge data analytics for semiconductor supply chains. The project aims to establish robust monitoring frameworks and facilitate ongoing dialogue among suppliers, manufacturers, and policymakers, promoting a cohesive and adaptive strategy to supply chain disruptions.

As part of our commitment to the Black community, the University of Bristol has launched a number of postgraduate research scholarships exclusively for students of Black heritage for 2024/25 entry.

These scholarships aim to address under-representation in postgraduate research. This supports our work to improve representation across all levels of study and academia, and is aligned with the aims of our  Black Bristol Scholarships Programme.

We have a wide range of support networks, student societies and community groups for students of Black heritage. These include our  Be More Empowered for Success PGR Programme  which aims to influence positive change across the themes of access, belonging and empowerment.

This year, we are taking part in the  Women’s Higher Education Network 100 Black Women Professors NOW Pipeline Programme (WHEN) , which aims to propel the careers of Black PhD students who identify as women of Black heritage, through coaching, development, networking and mentoring. WHEN also work with senior leadership to deliver systemic change.?We are looking to continue to enhance this support as we continue to strive to make our student communities more inclusive.

Examining the gap between ecological science and environmental management

Working for more than 15 years in Alaska’s Bristol Bay region, Sarah O’Neal is part of the SAFS PhD program. Recently publishing a new paper in BioScience examining the gap between ecological science and environmental management, Sarah’s article focuses on indirect ecological effects and how these are often defined differently in regulatory decisions. Indirect ecological effects are those in which the interactions of two species are modified by another species or abiotic factor (for example, valuable metals like copper, physical habitat alteration, and other factors).

Part of a larger effort involving her PhD research, advised by SAFS Professor Daniel Schindler, Sarah led a team that reviewed more than 20 National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) documents for proposed mining projects across the US, to compare the treatment of indirect effects in regulatory versus ecological literature.

What she found was a clear dichotomy between regulatory and academic definitions of indirect effects, which in turn has far-reaching consequences when being used to make environmental management decisions. Where does this disconnect come from? “In part, some of this comes down to the terminology used in science, by scientists,” Sarah shared. “Especially when evaluating indirect ecological effects – which are by nature a bit harder to define and assess than direct ecological effects – the terminology used can be confusing. The ecological literature often uses overly complicated and redundant language, and is limited in its utility by regulators as a result.”

In some of her other PhD work, Sarah is using GIS and statistical tools to consider spatial correlation within stream networks, as opposed to the more common method of Euclidean (straight) line-to-line distance. Doing this in concert with environmental DNA (eDNA), Sarah collected data from a small watershed in Bristol Bay, only accessible via helicopter. These eDNA methods were particularly useful for covering more ground in this remote part of the world with difficult access. “What’s cool about this research is that it’s one of very few watersheds in the area that doesn’t support a ton of salmon,” Sarah shared. “The assumption was that it didn’t support any salmon at all, but we found evidence to the contrary. Now we can plug this into the spatial stream network and predict salmon distribution throughout that watershed.”

Why is work like this important? Because it ties directly into the work behind NEPA documents when considering proposed mining and other development projects. “The importance of headwater streams to fish as well as their contributions to downstream habitat are often overlooked, so developers often assume alteration of headwater habitats will have minimal effects to aquatic life. Our work shows that this isn’t the case,” Sarah added.

Copper is one of the most toxic elements to aquatic life, even at levels far below regulatory criteria. It impacts the ability of salmon to find their way home, find food, detect predators, find mates, and even find other family members. “The known impacts of copper on fish behavior—even at concentrations well below legal limits—is a clear example of indirect effects being overlooked in a regulatory context,” Sarah shared. Improving this situation, according to Sarah, would require regulators and scientists to work together to come to an ecologically relevant and legally applicable definition of indirect effects to ensure they are considered in environmental assessments. To bolster the ability to regulate indirect effects of development, ecosystem-wide experiments before, during, and after the development of a project are critical. In regard to more comprehensively incorporating indirect effects into regulation, Sarah added, “We have a job to do as scientists to simplify our language and make it more understandable. We showed that in a quantitative way in this new paper.”

Another area of Sarah’s work, funded by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and others, is to evaluate sculpin, a bottom-dwelling small fish, as a bio-indicator species of contamination. “Sculpin are a good fit for this because they don’t have swim bladders and therefore generally don’t move very far over their lifetime. They’re easy to catch, sensitive to many contaminants, and ubiquitous,” Sarah shared. “Right now, we’re comparing the utility of sculpin relative to other species in the watersheds we’re studying in relation to the effects of copper.”

Over the course of her research, Sarah has worked with numerous partners including Trout Unlimited, the University of Alaska Anchorage, EPA, Bristol Bay Native Corporation, the National Park Service, the Center for Science in Public Participation, United Tribes of Bristol Bay, the Bristol Bay Native Association, the Nature Conservancy, Nondalton Tribal Council, and the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation.

Project fee

Some research projects will require an additional financial contribution to cover additional resources that are not typically covered by tuition fees. These costs are usually incurred annually and you will be informed before you begin your studies whether this applies to you.

Completion fee

Following successful completion of your Stage 3 Progress Review, the level of supervision you require for the final stage before submission of your thesis for examination will be agreed and a completion fee will be set, if applicable, to reflect supervision requirements. The completion fee is as follows:

• Completion fee without supervision – £466 (2023/24 academic year).
• Completion fee with supervision – 40% of the relevant fee.
• Full fee with full supervision. 

Resubmission fee

If you are required to resubmit your thesis following your final viva, the resubmission fee for 2023/24 is £357.

Studentships

Throughout the year, a number of funded studentship opportunities  may become available and will be advertised via the Doctoral Academy as well as jobs.ac.uk . Please check regularly to see if there is an opportunity within your research area if you are interested in these.

Studentships typically cover the costs of tuition fees for UK students (or up to UK level if an international student) and have a bursary attached to cover living expenses. Please check the terms and conditions of the individual advert for full details.

Self-funded research

If your research area falls outside our advertised positions, you will need to cover the costs of tuition fees, project fees (if applicable) and living expenses personally or arrange for a sponsor or external body (for example an employer or government sponsor) to fund your research project. You will need to clearly state how you intend to fund your studies when making an application.

Postgraduate Doctoral Loan

If you are a prospective UK doctoral student, and you normally live in England, you may be able to apply for a UK government Postgraduate Doctoral Loan  to support your postgraduate research degree study.

University funding sources

• The UWE Bristol Alumni Scholarship offers a 25% discount to PGRs who have completed an eligible programme at UWE Bristol.  This discount is only on the first year of study if your course is full time, and for only the first two years of study if on a part-time course.
• The UWE Bristol Fund  can provide grants to students facing financial difficulty, support student-led community projects and fund students extra-curricular activities.

Graduate funding and enrollment, enrollment and student status.

Enrollment is the official recognition of a student’s relationship with the university.  Enrolling is the basic authorization for a student’s access to campus resources including campus labs, assistantships, fellowships, travel grants, etc. each semester.

Doctoral students must be enrolled until they finish their degree unless requesting a non-student status. Further details on enrollment can be found on the Enrollment in Your Program page .

Graduate Funding

Graduate funding is a source of financial aid for enrolled doctoral students. To receive graduate funding, including assistantships, fellowships, stipends, and travel grants, a student must be enrolled for the semester in which they will receive the funds.    

Ph.D. students are fully funded to pursue their degrees through a combination of competitive internal and external fellowships and research and teaching assistantships. Funding packages include tuition, health insurance/health fee, and a living allowance or stipend.

Cornell offers limited financial assistance for research master’s and professional degree programs. The terms of these awards can vary by program. For further details, please reach out to the specific program.

Funding and Non-Enrollment (M or B Exams, Graduation, Leave of Absence, or Withdrawal)

During periods of non-enrollment, such as a leave of absence, withdrawal, an individual does not retain student status; student access is deactivated, and graduate funding is ended. Without enrollment, students are ineligible to receive fellowships, assistantships, travel grants, or other forms of financial aid.

Students are not allowed to enroll or receive funding (such as assistantships, fellowships, travel grants, etc.) for any term following the date they pass their M or B exam. When a student and their committee determine the M or B exam date, it is important to notify all relevant members, including the graduate field administrator and the staff member administering the student’s appointment, so that the student may be well informed for the end day of their current appointment. Funding and enrollment are prohibited in future terms after a passed M or B exam.

Students are not allowed to enroll or receive funding for any term or period following the date of a leave of absence or withdrawal from the program.  

Enrollment and Employment Limitations

All enrolled students are limited to 20 hours of combined assistantship, hourly student appointments, and/or outside employment per week. Further limitations may apply to students based on their funding source. Full employment limits can be found on the Employment policy page .

Funding and Satisfactory Academic Progress

All funding is conditional upon a student remaining in good academic standing, making satisfactory academic progress toward the degree, and performing satisfactorily in all assistantship responsibilities. Advanced doctoral students who require more than the allowed seven years to complete their degree shall not be funded as a TA after the 14 th semester.
