Dirigo Film Festival

Dirigo is an International Student Film Festival directed and produced by  BA (Hons) Film & Media Arts Production   students from University Centre Weston. This festival aims to inspire and showcase the creativity of student filmmakers worldwide. It is an open festival with no set boundaries; we actively encourage new styles, voices and direction.

The very first Warwick Film Festival was held in 2023, a student-led event based on the theme of “Belonging”, highlighting Warwick’s commitment to inclusion, creativity and love of the arts.

On Wednesday 28 June 2023, we were delighted to screen fourteen winning entries to the Warwick Film Festival 2023 to an audience of filmmakers, students, staff and the local community. We were honoured to be joined by the Mayor of Kenilworth and filmmakers from the Oxford University Filmmaking Foundation who have produced a feature film, Breakwater .

UK Film Festivals 2023

The UK is home to some of the most exciting and anticipated film festivals each year. With festivals covering LGBTQ+ cinema to showcases of student films and short films, the dates criteria are starting to get released for the UK Film Festivals scheduled for 2023.

Festivals in the lineup include Glasgow’s Film Festival, London’s BFI Future Film Fest, the Norwich Film Festival, and the Edinburgh International Film Festival, among others. London Short Film Festival

Another short film festival, the LSFF has been around since 2003 for independent and internationally-regarded films. Participants often create BAFTA-eligible short films, and the festival is supported by various UK media and film outlets.

• What? Short Films (up to 45 minutes)

United Kingdom Student Film Festival  

The UK Student Film Festival is part of a group of curated film fests that includes the UK Music Video Festival, the 1 World Student Film Festival, and others. Categories range from horror student short to student shorts by continent, experimental student short, and filmmaking skills.

• When? June 10, 2023 (December 5, 2022; January 2, 2023; January 30, 2023; March 3, 2023 deadlines)
• Where? London (The Hen ; Chickens Theatre Bar)
• What? Short Films and Music Videos (up to 30 minutes maximum in certain categories)

Flare is the UK’s biggest UK and international festival event that showcases LGBTQIA+ cinema . It’s put on by the British Film Institute and is funded by the UK Government.

• When? March, 2023 (dates TBA); December 21, 2022 submission deadline
• Where? London (usually at BFI Southbank)
• What? UK and International Short Films (up to 40 minutes) and feature-length films (40+ minutes)

London Film Festival  

The BFI London Film Festival is another one funded by the UK gov’t with hundreds of films showcased in animated, short film, and other categories. It’s both a UK and International Film Festival.

• What? Short Films and Feature-Length Films

BFI Future Film Festival

In addition to the London Film Festival, BFI puts on an annual Future Film Festival , which has been around for 13 years. It’s dedicated to short films made by emerging, young filmmakers.

• Where? (BFI Southbank)
• What? Short Films (up to 10 minutes) by filmmakers aged 16-25

Raindance Film Festival

The Raindance Film Festival is a well-respected event in the UK, held each year in London. It showcases a range of independent and international films, including features, shorts, and documentaries, and offers a platform for film lovers to discover new and exciting talent, and for filmmakers to connect with the industry. The festival is dedicated to supporting independent filmmaking and fostering new talent, making it a valuable experience for those passionate about the film world.

Norwich Film Festival

Norwich Film Fest is another short film festival accepting local, national, and international submissions . The festival has qualifying accreditation with both BAFTA and BIFA.

Open City Documentary Festival  

One of London’s biggest documentary festivals, this festival for nonfiction filmmakers is an experimental showcase that has been around for 13 years.

Edinburgh International Film Festival

Scotland’s capital city is home to an international film festival that was inaugurated in 1947. The festival helped to establish such notable filmmakers as Ingmar Bergman and Danny Boyle.

• Where? Edinburgh, Scotland

Sheffield DocFest

The Sheffield DocFest is approaching its 30th edition in 2023. The festival showcases documentary works from all around the world by independent, established, and emerging filmmakers alike.

• What? Documentary and Nonfiction Films of all lengths

Glasgow Film Festival

Last but not least, we had to mention the Glasgow Film Festival - one of Scotland’s leading film showcases that has featured films like Crazy Heart and Lipstick Under My Burkha .

Encounters Film Festival

Encounters Film Festival is a top film event held annually in Bristol, UK. Cannes Film Festival: What's everyone talking about at this year's French celebration of cinema?

Cannes becomes the playground of the film industry's biggest movers and shakers for two weeks of the year - what are the highlights this time round?

The Cannes Film Festival is a 12-day whirl of film premieres, Hollywood stars, champagne receptions and super yachts.

The 76th year of the festival in the French Riviera city , 2023's offerings include big blockbusters, new talent, and just a splash of controversy.

So far, we've seen a standing ovation for Johnny Depp , honorary Palme d'Or's for Harrison Ford and Michael Douglas, and red carpet appearances from stars including Cate Blanchett, Ethan Hawke, and Dame Helen Mirren.

So, as the festival reaches its halfway point, what have the big moments been so far, and what else should we be looking out for at Cannes ?

The Palme d'Or

This year is a record-breaking one at Cannes: of the 21 films competing for the Palme d'Or (the festival's highest prize), seven of them are from women - a whacking one third of the entrants.

It's a stark contrast to this year's Oscars race, where not one female filmmaker was nominated in the best director category.

With last year's Cannes Festival producing three of the eventual Oscar best picture nominees, we can only hope this year's impressive offering will highlight a few female filmmakers' names for next year's Academy selection.

Jeanne Du Barry

All eyes were on Johnny Depp at the start of the festival, as his period film Jeanne Du Barry opened proceedings.

His big comeback following the high-profile US court case against his ex-wife Amber Heard, which he won, saw him receive a standing ovation.

The film sees the star playing King Louis XV, while the drama's director, a French filmmaker known as Maiwenn, plays the titular role.

She recently admitted to spitting in a journalist's face following reports accusing her ex-husband, the director Luc Besson, of rape (the French court of appeal dismissed all the allegations against Besson in May last year).

A somewhat controversial choice to kick off proceedings, the festival was happy to overlook any raised eyebrows - and it certainly got people talking.

Away from Depp senior, there is Depp junior - his daughter Lily-Rose.

She is starring in The Idol, the highly anticipated series by Euphoria creator Sam Levinson and musician The Weeknd also premiering at Cannes.

Lily-Rose stars as an aspiring pop star who enters a complex relationship with a self-help guru played by The Weeknd.

With reports of a costly overhaul midway through production, all eyes will be on the reaction to the Cannes premiere before the show airs on Sky Atlantic in the UK.

Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny

While not part of the competition, Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny has premiered at Cannes.

It's been an emotional ride for its star Harrison Ford, who is not only saying goodbye to the role of Indy, but also bagging an honorary Palme d'Or while appearing at the festival.

Directed by James Mangold, whose previous work includes Logan and Ford v Ferrari, the film stars Ford in his final outing as the iconic archaeologist while Fleabag's Phoebe Waller-Bridge plays his god-daughter.

It's the first film in the franchise not to be directed by Steven Spielberg or written by George Lucas, and has been a long time coming - its initial intended release date was 19 July 2019.

Due out in cinemas on 30 June, it's expected to be a summer blockbuster hit for Disney.

Killers Of The Flower Moon

Killers Of The Flower Moon is a Western crime drama from Martin Scorsese with a very starry cast including Leonardo DiCaprio , Robert De Niro, Jesse Plemons and recent Oscar winner Brendan Fraser .

It's based on a book about a series of murders of members of the Osage tribe in Oklahoma during the 1920s after oil was discovered on tribal land.

Reported to have cost £160m, and not out in cinemas until October, the drama is expected to be an awards contender.

It has played out of competition at Cannes, and while it's due to eventually come out on Apple TV+, Scorsese has described it as a "big screen movie".

Asteroid City

A recent online trend has seen videos imitating the unique and highly stylised look of Wes Anderson films.

So, what better time for a new film from the director himself?

As usual, he's pulled together a big ensemble cast - this one includes Jason Schwartzman, Scarlett Johansson , Tom Hanks, Jeffrey Wright, Tilda Swinton, Bryan Cranston, Edward Norton, Adrien Brody, Liev Schreiber, Steve Carell, Matt Dillon, Hong Chau, Willem Dafoe, Margot Robbie and Jeff Goldblum (to name just a few).

Set in 1955, it's about a junior stargazers' convention and is among the films at Cannes hoping to take home the prestigious top prize - the Palme d'Or - before it hits cinemas in June.

May December

Director Todd Haynes, known for work including Wonderstruck and Dark Waters, has an intriguingly meta offering in competition at the festival.

May December stars Natalie Portman as an actress who goes to meet a woman played by Julianne Moore that Portman's character is going to play in a film.

In real life, both stars have won Oscars in the past and the film is yet to be sold to a US distributor, so makers are no doubt banking on great reviews when it premieres at the festival before coming out on Sky Cinema later this year.

Occupied City

One of Britain's most lauded directors, Sir Steve McQueen has brought his new documentary Occupied City to this year's Cannes as a special screening.

About Amsterdam - where he now lives with his wife, writer Bianca Stigter, who co-produced the film - under Nazi occupation during the Second World War, it has a whopping 262-minute running time.

It's the first time McQueen has directed a documentary feature, but his doc miniseries Uprising won a TV BAFTA last year.

The latest offering from Pixar is set in a city where elements live together and is about the relationship between a fiery girl and a boy made from water, who find that just because they can't touch one another doesn't mean they have nothing in common.

The animation will premiere out of competition and will close the festival on 27 May, before releasing in cinemas next month.

The voice cast includes Jurassic World star Mamoudou Athie and Nancy Drew actress Leah Lewis.

Inspired by romantic movies including You've Got Mail and Amelie, expect it to bring a heart-warming close to the festival.

We are delighted to issue a call for papers for our upcoming hybrid conference (MS Teams and Highfield Campus) taking place 28-29 August 2024 on the topic of 'The Flowing Image: The Ocean on Screen'.

'The Flowing Image' will consider the significance of historical and contemporary representations of the ocean in digital, film and moving image works. Since the invention of the film camera, the sea is a site which has drawn great interest from both practitioners and audiences.

We invite scholars, practitioners, artists and activists exploring film and digital media as a mode for socio-political and scientific communication or those who use moving image works for oceanic research more broadly. To encourage intersectional and transdisciplinary discussion, we welcome scholars analysing and using film as a form of oceanic enquiry from disciplines including, but not limited to: Film Studies, Visual Cultures and Art History, Anthropology, Political and Social Sciences, International Relations and Development Studies, Earth and Ocean Sciences, History, Women and Gender Studies, Race and Indigenous Studies, Decolonial Theories, Music and Sound Studies, and Literary and Cultural Studies.

Abstracts are invited on topics and disciplines including, but not limited to moving-image representations of the ocean through:

American Express Presents BTS Hyde Park

Get ready for summer 2024 as Hyde Park will be showcasing some of the biggest acts in music for its 11th year running.

Andrea Bocelli will headline this year, and the first classical artist in BST history, not to mention a 2024 exclusive.

Over the years, there’s been a mixed bag of talented artists including The Rolling Stones, Taylor Swift, Bruce Springsteen, The Strokes, Kylie, Carole King, Bon Jovi, Elton John, Tom Petty, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Blur, Florence + The Machine, Céline Dion, Paul Simon, The Killers, Bruce Springsteen and Green Day.

Sadly during 2020 and 2021, BST was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic, but returned with a bang in 2022. The Rolling Stones, Pearl Jam, Adele, Duran Duran and Elton John all headlined and what a year that was.

On The Mount at Wasing / Solstice on the Mount

Nestled in the heart of Berkshire, Wasing Estate is a natural hidden gem located just an hour away from London.

To mark the summer solstice on 20th June, ‘Solstice on the Mount’ will take place in the stunning woodland amphitheater, headlined by Mercury prize nominated Nick Mulvey, plus world music from Rodrigo y Gabriela, AWARË, and Ajeet followed by a Sunrise ceremony.

This is an alcohol free event which encourages guests to connect with nature and be present in the moment.

Over recent years, Wasing has become an ever-growing haven for well-being, offering everyone the chance to leave the modern world and all its distractions behind, and instead connect with nature.

Wasing will also host the On The Mount At Wasing concert series throughout June, featuring an impressive lineup from Paolo Nutini and Crowded House to Jungle and Underworld!

Held in Manchester’s Heaton Park and organised by the same people that put on The Warehouse Project every year, Parklife is back for another year!

Over its first decade, Parklife welcomed performances from music greats such as Mark Ronson, Wu Tang Clan, Disclosure, George Ezra, The Chemical Brothers, Snoop Dogg, The xx, Liam Gallagher, N.E.R.D, The 1975, Foals and many more.

The annual event features beats from multiple music genres including hip hop, grime, pop, rock, club, house and dance.

Who’s playing? Disclosure, Peggy Gou, Four Tet, Becky Hill, Sugababes, Mahalia, Shy FX, Camelphat, Sub Focus, Danny Howard and more (if you can believe it!)

Radio 1’s Big Weekend

Stockwood Park in Luton will play host to BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend 2024 with over 100,000 music fans expected to attend the live music spectacular this May.

Radio 1’s Big Weekend will be supersized with four stages running across three days: Radio 1 Main Stage, Radio 1’s Future Sounds, Radio 1 Dance and BBC Introducing.

Radio 1’s flagship festival will showcase around 100 acts, from the biggest stars in the world to new and emerging artists, with the full line-up and ticketing details to be announced on Radio 1 in the coming months.

Reading & Leeds

Reading and Leeds Festivals are twin music festivals taking place simultaneously over the same UK bank holiday weekend on Friday 23 – Sunday 25 August 2024.

Along with a huge selection of artists and live music spanning genres across rock, pop, hip hop, grime, dance and indie, fans can also look forward to comedy, arts, cinema, silent discos and funfairs for a fun-filled line-up of programming to enjoy.

Rock in Rio

Over the past 20 years, Metallica, Stevie Wonder, Bruce Springsteen, Britney Spears, The Rolling Stones, Queen and more have all performed at Rock in Rio.

But this year? The Jonas Brothers will be joining Jake Bugg, Doja Cat and Ed Sheeran in Portugal at the legendary festival.

Where is it? Lisbon, Portugal

When is it? June 15 – June 23 2024

Who’s playing? Ed Sheeran, Jonas Brothers, Doja Cat, NE-YO, Camila Cabello, Evanescence and more!

TRNSMT is a UK music festival held at Glasgow Green. Along with some of the best pop, rock, hip hop and indie music acts across multiple stages, the event also boasts plenty of street food stands and bars.

Launched in 2017, TRNSMT is pronounced “Transmit” and replaced the popular Scottish festival T In The Park, which was held between 1994 and 2016. The first edition of TRNSMT featured headliners Kasabian, Biffy Clyro and Radiohead.

Truck Festival

Truck Festival is the annual event held in Steventon, Oxfordshire.

Originally founded in 1998, it was coined the ‘birthday party that got out of control’, and now? Truck is dubbed the “UK’s most warped village fête”.

The four-day celebration of the best new and established artists, filled with whacky entertainment and a unique community spirit.

One thing’s for sure, it’s not one to miss!

Uber One Presents All Points East

Since 2018, Uber presents All Points East has hosted 10 days of creative programming in Tower Hamlets’ Victoria Park with emphasis on sustainability and community.

In 2019, due to the success of its first year, the event expanded by bringing big-name headliners together with brand new artists, multi-genre innovators and the Victoria Park community.

The line-up featured The Chemical Brothers, The Strokes, Christine And The Queens, Bring Me The Horizon, Mumford & Sons and Bon Iver.

Since then, incredible headliners have taken to East London and put on the performance of a lifetime.

Victorious Festival
