Basic Guidelines For Writing Essays in Spanish

how to write essays in spanish

Students tend to focus on speaking practice while learning Spanish, so they often neglect writing. However, most educators emphasize its importance for mastering the language. They say it’s impossible to become fluent in a particular language if one doesn’t train writing skills.

Therefore, teachers give a lot of essay assignments to students. This type of homework is a great way to inspire them to think and communicate in Spanish effectively. It may be quite difficult to complete such a task. However, it’s one of the most effective ways to learn Spanish or any other language.

You may be tempted to go online and find the best essay writing service to have your essay written for you. This may be helpful when you’re pressed for time, but in the long run, you’re missing an opportunity to improve your own essay writing skills. That’s why we are going to provide you with some recommendations on how to ease the writing process.

Some tips on writing in Spanish

  • Be careful with word spelling. Remember that teachers pay special attention to spelling so it can either make or break your student image. Having good spelling makes a positive impression of your writing skills and boosts your grades.
  • Make your essay coherent with the help of connectors. Use them to explain the relationship between the ideas so your essay doesn’t look like just a list of thoughts and facts.
  • Pay attention to syntax or the word order. As you need to stick to the academic style, try to keep the traditional order such as “subject + verb + objects”. This will also help you express your opinion in a simpler way, so it’s more clear to the reader.
  • Avoid word repetitions by using synonyms. Frequent repetitions make your text boring and heavy. If you use the same words again and again, your essay will look dull. Hence, try to find synonyms in Spanish thesaurus and replace the most commonly used expressions with them.
  • Before you create a final version of your essay, let someone read it and give feedback. It’s hard to be objective about your writing, so ask another person to tell you which ideas are less clear if your text contains any confusing phrases, and what are the positive aspects that can be reinforced.
  • Do not write the essay in your native language first to translate it into Spanish then. This approach is not viable for mastering a foreign language. The only thing that you are doing by translating the text literally is practicing the grammatical structures that you have learned. This doesn’t help you learn new idioms and collocations that don’t follow the general grammatical rules.

Now that you know how to make your writing better, let’s consider a step-by-step guide to essay writing in Spanish.

Pick an interesting topic

If possible, choose a topic you are truly excited about. Unless the specific title was given to you by instructors, find a theme you want to research and write about. True interest is what will drive you towards creating an excellent piece. If you enjoy reading about the subject you are going to analyze in your essay, then you will definitely succeed in writing. Remember that decent work can be done only if you are passionate about it.

Brainstorm the ideas

When it comes to any project, brainstorming is an integral stage of the creation process. This is one of the most efficient ways to gain insights and generate new ideas. You can use this technique to think of the main supporting arguments, an approach for a catchy introduction, and paragraph organization. You can also try freewriting and/or make a brief outline to ease the writing process itself.

Create an introduction

Probably the main rule about creating an introduction that you have to stick to is adding a clear thesis statement there. It must be included in the first paragraph to give your essay a certain direction and help the readers focus their attention on the topic. Also, your introduction must be catchy and intriguing to evoke the desire to read the essay further and learn more.

Organize an essay body

It’s essential to make the body paragraphs organized logically. You need to make sure that each of them is closely related to the main topic and discusses one major point. Each body paragraph must consist of a topic sentence and supporting arguments with evidence. It’s very important to write sentences in a logical sequence so they follow each other orderly. Also, since paragraphs shouldn’t overlap in content, add smooth transitions from one to the other.

Sum up the content

The vital requirement to the conclusion is that it must logically relate to the original thesis statement. Generally, it’s not acceptable to introduce new ideas in the conclusion. Instead, you need to sum up the main points mentioned in the essay’s body. It’s also forbidden to add any off-topic ideas to the last paragraph of your paper.

Check content relevance and cohesion

Once you complete the conclusion, read through the essay for relevance and cohesion. Make sure that the whole piece is on the topic and in the mode required. In particular, check if body paragraphs support the thesis statement and whether the conclusion relates to it. After that, read your paper once again to see whether the parts connect together well. Think if there are logical links between ideas and if you need more transitions.

Read for clarity and style

Scan your essay to find out whether some sections may be unclear to the reader. Analyze the text to find out if it sounds academic and polished. Check if there are any vague pronouns, excessive wording, or awkward phrases. Don’t forget to make sure that all points are listed in similar grammatical forms.

The last stage of your writing process is final proofreading. Read your paper the last time looking at grammar, spelling, punctuation, verb tense, word forms, and pronoun agreement. Correct all the mistakes to make your work excellent.

Remember that the most important thing about learning a foreign language is a regular practice. Therefore, you should use any opportunity provided by instructors to polish your skills. Hopefully, the recommendations given above will help you write an excellent essay and master the Spanish language!

How to Cite a Foreign Language Sources in APA, MLA, or Chicago

Good sources come in all types, sizes, and…languages!

With the increasing popularity of searching for sources on the Internet, it is easier than ever to access sources from all over the world and in different languages. With these kinds of sources, however, it can be difficult to understand how to accurately include them in your citation list.

So, how exactly would you cite a source that was originally published in another language? Below are some helpful tips on how to do so in MLA, APA, and Chicago citation styles.

To create a citation for a source in a foreign language, here are some pieces of information you may need:

  • Author name(s)
  • Title of the work* (you may need the original title, depending on your citation style)
  • Where the work was published
  • Date the work was published

To help with creating citations for sources in a foreign language, we’ve included formulas and  examples for some of the most popular citation styles for the source Le Petit Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry.

Formula for citing a foreign language source in MLA:

Author Last Name, Author First Name. Title in the Original Language [Translated Title]. Publisher, Year.

MLA format example :

de Saint-Exupéry, Antoine. Le Petit Prince [The Little Prince]. Gallimard, 1943.

MLA in-text citation format:

(Author’s Last Name Page #)

MLA in-text citation example:

(de Saint-Exupéry 6)

*For additional help with MLA citations, checkout this MLA in-text citation example and MLA citation website citing guide.

Formula for citing a foreign language source in APA:

International sources include treaties, materials of United Nations, World Trade Organization, and European Union, and various international cases. To cite a source from an international governing body in APA and MLA styles, it is important that you know basic information, such as the name of the organization, the name of the document, and the publication date.

International sources in APA style

In APA references and in-text citations, include the treaty/convention/other agreement’s name, the signing/approval date, and a URL.

In-text citation template and examples:

Name of the Treaty/Convention/Other Agreement (Publication Year) …

United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989) …

Parenthetical:

(Name of the Treaty/Convention/Other Agreement, Publication Year).

(United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, 1989).

APA reference list entry template and example:

Name of the Treaty/Convention/Other Agreement, Month Day Year, URL

United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity, December 12, 2016, https://www.cbd.int/doc/press/2016/pr-2016-12-18-un-bidov-conf-en.pdf

International sources in MLA style

In MLA works-cited-list entries and in-text citations, the format depends on the document and whether the international governing agency or the document title identifies the entry.

Citation in prose:

Name of the Governing Agency …

United Nations …

Document Title …

Kyoto Protocol to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change …

(Name of the Governing Agency) or (Name of the Document)

(United Nations).

(Kyoto Protocol to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change).

MLA works-cited-list entry templates and examples:

Resolution:

Name of the Governing Agency, Name of the Primary Agency (if applicable). Name of the Document. Document Number (if applicable), Day Month Year. Container/Website Name , URL.

United Nations, General Assembly. Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Resolution 217 A, 10 Dec. 1948. United Nations , www.un.org/en/universal-declaration-human-rights/ .

Name of the Treaty. Name of the Governing Agency, Publication Year, URL.

Kyoto Protocol to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. United Nations, 1998, unfccc.int/resource/docs/convkp/kpeng.pdf.

To cite a translated work in APA and MLA styles, it is important that you know basic information, such as the author’s name, the translator’s name, the translated title, the original publication date, the translation’s publication date, and the publisher’s name.

APA in-text citation template and examples:

Note that in APA, references to translated works include two dates: the year of publication of the work in its original language and the year of publication of the translated work.

Separate the years with a slash, and list the earlier year first.

Author Surname (Original Year/Translation Year) …

Freud (1902/1963) …

(Author Surname, Original Year/Translation Year).

(Freud, 1902/1963).

Author Surname, F. M. (Publication Year). Title of the book (F. Translator Surname, Trans.). Publisher. (Original work published in Year)

Latour, B. (1993). We have never been modern (C. Porter, Trans.). Harvard University Press. (Original work published in 1943)

MLA works-cited-list entry template and example:

In MLA, the format for the translated work varies depending on whether you want to emphasize the translation or the work itself. When emphasizing the work itself, use the same format you would for a regular publication but add “translated by” followed by the translator’s name.

Author Surname, First Name Title of the Book . Translated by Name of the Translator, Publisher, Year.

Latour, B. We Have Never Been Modern . Translated by Catherine Porter, Harvard UP, 1993.

When emphasizing the work as a translation (less commonly), list the translator first followed by the label “translator.” After the work’s title, write “By” followed by the author’s full name.

Translator Surname, First Name, translator. Title of the Work . By Author First Name Surname, Publisher, Year.

Porter, Catherine, translator. We Have Never Been Modern . By Bruno Latour, Harvard UP, 1993.

Conquest and Pestilence in the Early Spanish Philippines. By Linda A. Newson. Honolulu: University of Hawai'i Press, 2009. x, 420 pp. $56.00 (cloth)

Documentary evidence for the demographic impact of Spanish conquest and colonial rule in the Philip-pines suggests that the pre-Spanish population was about 1.5 million. This is higher than previous estimates and implies that the decline in the early colonial period was greater than often supposed. However, the decline was lower than that associated with Spanish conquest in the Americas. The more moderate impact of Old World diseases in the Philippines cannot be attributed to immunity that Filipinos had acquired through contacts with Asia in pre-Spanish times, but to the low population density and difficult communications between and within the islands that impeded their spread. Despite new colonial policies aimed at the more peaceful acquisition of new territories, conquest in the Philippines was accompanied by considerable bloodshed. However, in the longer term the impact of colonial rule was moderated by the limited Spanish presence that resulted from the remoteness of the islands from Spain and the limited opportunities there for wealth creation, notably in the form of precious minerals.

The Spanish colonial designs in the Philippines could perhaps be summarized into three key terms, namely: Unification, Christianization, and Hispanization. This book summary delves into the work of John Leddy Phelan entitled The Hispanization of the Philippines. The book “concerns itself with the meeting of indigenous Filipino society with Spanish culture.” The author explored the successes and failures of the Spanish project in the Philippines.

Pre-colonial Philippines was a land with numerous tribes under noble chieftains whose very purpose was governing its people, protecting their lands, and claiming new territories to prove their power on the lands. One of the most influential and most advanced were those which have come from Mindanao, which was described by the Spaniards as the most advanced and systematic among all the societies in the country, capable of dominating the country if the course of history took a different route. Before the Spaniards came Philippine's settlements are very simple, barangays are already existing. Villages from different parts of Philippines varies. Manila has an approximate of two thousand residents. Most of Visayas villages are small and found near the sea. Not only in the Visayas but most communities in the Philippines were near the coast one reason for this is because of the country's geographical setup and for food, resources, and efficient transport across different islands. In addition, barangay members are commonly related to each other since power is commonly passed down to relatives. Pre-colonial times the Philippines worshipped their ancestral spirits, gods, and deities of the Earth. This religious practice was headed by Babaylans. Spanish colonialism started to change everything. They stopped the progress of different native communities and they started to unite the whole archipelago through one of which is by Christianity so that they can control it easily. With the crown of Spain, the Spaniards brought Christianity and baptized natives to further engrave themselves into our lands. During the Spaniards occupation Filipinos were displaced from their traditional settlements and were moved into the Friars desired location to put them to their desired use, commonly as workers in fields. Slavery exists in pre-colonial Philippines although they are not what entirely slaves. They are the people who pledge for service to pay their debts. The slavery was not as cruel as those of other nations at the time. Slavery exists at that time because of the different status of people and for different reasons. The power of the political structure shifted when the Spaniards came. Governador-General was placed in the nation as a representative of the King of Spain yet despite this setup, the Friars, leaders of the Churches have gained immense influence over the nation and the decision making of the state. With the changes in the political structure of the nation, the chieftains who once ruled as administrators of the land were replaced by Spanish officials and Friars who acted as rulers of the nation, doing all things which pleased and favoured them in addition to serving the crown of Spain and doing its bidding in the nation.

History professor wins Emory Elliott award for book on Native women

Historian Alejandra Dubcovsky is the winner of the 2023 Emory Elliott Book Award for outstanding publications authored by faculty members in UC Riverside’s College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences, or CHASS. Dubcovsky, a professor of history, was honored for her second book, “Talking Back: Native Women and the Making of the Early South,” published by Yale Press in 2023. The book explores war, slavery, loss, and remembrance through the lives of Native, Spanish, and Black women in early American history in the South.

Talking Back book cover

A UCR faculty member since 2016, Dubcovsky’s research focuses on Native American history, Spanish borderlands, and the early American South. “I was so deeply honored to receive the Emory Eliott Award,” she said. “I had served on this book committee in the past and had been so impressed by the innovative and thoughtful work of my UCR colleagues. It feels wonderful (and surreal) to be part of this legacy.” The Emory Elliott Book Award was established by the Center for Ideas and Society, or CIS, and the family and friends of Emory Elliott, a UCR professor of English who died in 2009. Each year, the committee chooses books published the previous academic year by CHASS faculty members who best exemplify Elliott’s values. The award comes with a $1,000 contribution towards the author’s research. The center held a reception honoring Dubcovsky on April 29 at the Barn. Two finalists, Philipp Lehman, an associate professor of history, and Jennifer Syvertsen, an associate professor of anthropology, were also honored at the event.

Alejandra Dubcovsky

Jeanette Kohl, CIS co-director, said members of the award advisory committee praised “Talking Back” as “groundbreaking, deeply human, and intellectually daring.” “Alejandra writes powerful and beautiful books, always meticulously researched and thoroughly anchored in history, filled with a deeply human interest and bringing to light many surprises,” Kohl said. Dylan Rodríguez, CIS co-director, said the book is part of a body of historical scholarship that crosses academic disciplinary and interdisciplinary fields. “Alejandra’s work exemplifies a way of ‘doing history’ that expands and shatters traditional understandings of archive, academic method, and scholarly storytelling,” he said. The book has won multiple awards since its publication. The Organization of American Historians selected the book for the 2024 Mary Nickliss Prize, recognizing the most original book by an academic historian in the field of U.S. women’s and/or gender history. Dubcovsky also won the Rembert Patrick Award from the Florida Historical Society and the William L. Proctor Award from the Historic St. Augustine Research Institute in Florida.

Bookwire Releases a Spanish-Language Market View

In Feature Articles by Porter Anderson May 13, 2024

Representing Bookwire customers in Spanish-language markets, this report finds strong performance of both ebooks and audiobooks.

Variations in Adoption, Growth

thesis book in spanish

The company reports that its assessment covers both major and smaller independent publishing forces in the market. “For the first time,” the text reads, its information “represents almost the entire market, as it includes data from the universe of independent publishers as well as from the two major Spanish-language publishing groups, which have chosen Bookwire as their exclusive digital distributor: Grupo Planeta and Penguin Random House.”

Bookwire says that it has distributed content from “more than 1,400 publishing imprints in Spain and Latin America, totaling 174,000 titles.” Of those, the company reports, 160,000 distributed titles are in ebook format and 14,000 are audiobooks.

With an emphasis on 2023 figures in this report, Bookwire says that in its 2024 report, it estimates that Spanish-language ebooks will come to 210,000 titles and audiobooks to 22,000. That means, of course, that it’s important to remember that the below graphic is estimating 2024 performance.

The information in this piece is useful as one company’s view of a linguistically-defined market—the big footprint of the Spanish language, other words, as seen by one digital distributor operating in that footprint.

We’ll have more about the overall Readmagine program ahead, and today’s commentary from Bookwire can be seen as a prelude to its program on May 31.

Some Topline Observations From Bookwire

Unless specified, these observations are offered for all Spanish-language content Bookwire handles. In instances of specific markets or regions, that’s stated.

  • According to Bookwire, Spanish-language readers had 19.63 percent more titles available to them in 2023 than in 2022. This appears to encompass both ebooks and audiobooks and is based on Bookwire’s work in Spain and Latin American markets.
  • United States publishers that publish in Spanish are in the lead, the company says, in increasing their digital catalogues by a rate of 44.08 percent.
  • Digital catalogues of publishers based in Latin America, Bookwire says, have grown (until 2023) by 12.22 percent.
  • Mexican publishers, Bookwire says, have published 11.62 more ebooks.
  • Spanish publishers, the company says, published 10.61 percent more ebooks than in 2022.

thesis book in spanish

Some of Bookwire’s assessments of what’s driving growth in Spanish-language ebook inventory include:

  • Investment in Spanish libraries: “The state[in Spain] allocated €3 million (US$3.23 million) to the acquisition of content for the eBiblio platform in 2023.”
  • This investment has enabled it to provide a diverse and competitive range of services, which has led to a steady growth in the number of users.
  • Mexico and Latin America led 2023’s growth with increases of 12 percent and 9 percent respectively.
  • The growth of the United States’ market is driven by the increasing demand for this type of content on library platforms.
  • Publishers with the highest turnover and growth potential in this category are those specializing in romance literature and technical books.
  • Consumption of literary fiction rose on these platforms in 2023.

Elevated pricing came into play in 2023.

  • In 2023, the average price of an ebook stood at €7.66 (US$8.20) above the average price in 2022, per Bookwire’s figures.
  • “Latin American publishers have raised their prices the most over the past year,” the report says.

In ebooks and genres:

  • “Fiction ebooks are the bestsellers in all markets,” Bookwire reports, “especially in Spain, where they account for three-quarters of total turnover. We forecast that in 2024, fiction will continue to gain market share in all regions.”

In audiobooks, specifically:

  • “The audiobook market increased by 45.7 percent in 2023,” Bookwire says, “and by 52.81 percent in 2022.”
  • The company adds that the audiobook market is developing—”attracting an increasing number of readers and offering the greatest opportunities for growth.”
  • The introduction in 2023 by Spotify of audiobooks in a limited-consumption model in English-speaking markets “has enabled new catalogues to enter the distribution channel,” according to Bookwire’s information.

An interesting point running counter to the previously mentioned fiction interest. In Latin America, as well as in Mexico and the United States, Bookwire says, more nonfiction audiobooks are listened to than fiction audiobooks—”the opposite of what happens in Spain.”

And in the graphic below, it’s interesting to see book growth outstripping other areas. Mexico, of course, is the country with the most Spanish-speakers in the world, and yet it also is a place of a great many dialectical specialities in its Spanish, which may mean that acceptance of audiobooks could run behind other markets. A Publishing Perspectives story recently looked at the question of localization in this regard, from the standpoint of the   Bogotá International Book Fair .

thesis book in spanish

More guidance and information will be offered during Bookwire’s presentation in Madrid at Readmagine on May 31, but  there are several bullets worth mentioning at this point.

From the context of its own business, Bookwire sees:

  • The United States as the market with the greatest audiobook growth opportunity, both because of major publishing groups working n the space and because of hybrid and limited subscriptions plans on offer.
  • Literary narrative is shows special potential in audiobooks.
  • Simultaneous book launches in print, ebook, and audiobook formats is important.

More from Publishing Perspectives on audio in international publishing is  here , more on Spotify and its relatively recent foray into audiobook streaming is  here , more on digital publishing is here , more on Bookwire is  here, more on distribution is here , and more on Spanish-language publishing is here , more on industry statistics is here.

New technology from spanish brand streamlines kitchen countertops.

New technology allows for wireless power for compatible countertop appliances.

Countertops are getting sleeker, smarter and more powerful. In recent years, they’ve integrated cooking power with built-in induction hobs, lighting power with hidden switches , and phone power with integrated chargers. The latest power play comes from Porcelanosa , and it’s likely to expand the categories of porcelain slab countertops and kitchen technology even further.

Power to the Kitchen People

What the Spanish home products manufacturer has debuted is integrated power for countertop appliances, now available for the U.S. market. Here’s how the company describes the SmartKitchen by its Gamadecor division in a recent release: “The new invisible induction system for worktops acts as both a hob and charging point for electrical appliances.” (We call “worktops” countertops.) A control panel integrated into the porcelain slab countertop lets the user turn on a compatible blender or other small compatible countertop appliance.

The look of the panel is modern and touch based. The small appliances work through proximity to the hidden power source, (able to deliver up to 2,000 watts, according to the manufacturer), but they need to be compatible with wireless inductive electrification technology. ScienceDirect explains it this way: “Inductive power transfer (IPT) uses a magnetic field to transfer electrical energy…without an electrical connection.”

This type of technology is already in use within the home, and for outside systems too. Small appliance charging is the latest offering, and can be accomplished without batteries, cables or power cords. Anyone dealing with tangled messes and curious, agile tabby cats can appreciate the simplicity of this system in their kitchens.

Industry Reaction

SmartKitchen won a design award at a European show in 2020. This is the first I’ve seen it in the United States. Bringing electrical and plumbing technology across the ocean is complicated by different standards and codes. Now that it’s here, this system has the potential to win American awards too.

Google Chrome Gets Third Emergency Update In A Week As Attacks Continue

Japanese fans are puzzled that yasuke is in ‘assassin’s creed shadows’, forbes releases 2024 30 under 30 asia list.

Joe Simpson, ceramic tile consultant and editor of Diary of a Tile Addict , calls Porcelanosa’s integrated power source a neater alternative to pop-up power outlets and a “must-have masculine kitchen accessory for high end fitted kitchens.” (Kitchens in Europe and the U.K., where Simpson is based, don’t always have built-in “fitted” kitchens as we Americans know them.)

Caroline Broderick, managing editor at Pro Remodeler , is seeing this category grow, she says, “Integrated power is definitely a newer feature I’ve noticed just within the past two to three years. The product itself has been available, but now we’re seeing surface manufacturers partnering with the manufacturers of hidden induction systems and using it within their products. This just means it’s more reliable and accessible to contractors and their clients, so I’m sure we will see it much more over the coming years.” (As trend watcher for another trade publication , I tend to agree.)

At the same time, Broderick knows that the contractors and other home improvement professionals who read her publication have questions, concerns and skepticism about lifespan and performance for emerging technology. “That comes with anything new, but with it being attached to a pricey and anchoring part of the kitchen, the stakes are higher.” She notes that anything new to contractors and their installers is going to present challenges.

“This means that it will require added time, and likely, education to understand installation. If not, the remodeler would need to seek out someone with knowledge of these projects, which, from my guess, isn’t very common. This also means more money, but if the client is willing to pay that premium, a contractor will happily oblige,” the editor adds.

San Diego area general contractor Sheen Fischer is already familiar with this type of system, he says. “Induction technology has been around long enough that it is tried and proven. There would be the normal manufacturer and product specific concerns regarding warranty and service should the products fail or have issues.”

He sees it appealing to the most affluent end of the market. “Budget is almost always a concern, especially with state of the art, new to the market offerings,” he shares. Given its newness, Fischer expects adoption to be focused on “Perhaps the very high, luxury end of the spectrum, where style takes precedence over functionality.”

(Another challenge to overcome for the SmartKitchen is a lack of online information about which countertop appliances are currently available in the U.S. to work with your new countertops.)

“I think Porcelanosa (Gamadecor brand) SmartKitchen will set the pace in this arena,” predicts Simpson. “This is a company that is marketing and innovation driven, hugely powerful [and] well resourced.”

Author’s Note: Broderick, Fischer and Simpson were interviewed by email in May 2024.
