Our research is focused around three broad themes: conflict, peace and security; the evolving character of global and supra-national institutions; and the interpenetration of civil societies and international relations. In addition we have major strengths in area studies which help to ground our research into these broad thematic areas. Some of this activity is carried out under the umbrella of our various research centres, some within other collaborative contexts both within and outside the university, and some by individual researchers.

The Social Science Library holds hard copies of dissertations (usually MPhil and MSc) that departments have sent in according to their own selection criteria.

The library holds dissertations from the following departments: Criminology, Economics, Geography and the Environment, International Development, Politics and International Relations (note that MPhil Politics and International Relations dissertations are held in the Bodleian Library), Socio-Legal Studies and Social Policy and Intervention.

These dissertations are on the shelves opposite the Print and Copy Room, arranged by department, course and year. They are all indexed on SOLO, and they are for consultation in the library only. They cannot be borrowed.

Depositing your thesis

It is mandatory for students completing a research degree at the University of Oxford (registered to a programme of study on or after 1st October 2007) to deposit an electronic copy of their theses with the Oxford University Research Archive (ORA) in order to meet the requirements of their award. Thesis: In the UK, a thesis is normally a document that presents an author's research findings as part of a doctoral or research programme.

Dissertation: In the UK, a dissertation is normally a document that presents an author's research findings as part of an undergraduate or master's programme.

DPhil: An abbreviation for Doctor of Philosophy, which is an advanced research qualification. You may also see it referred to as PhD.

ORA: The Oxford University Research Archive , an institutional repository for the University of Oxford's research output including digital theses.

Autumn and spring teaching

The International Relations Undergraduate Dissertation serves as a capstone module integrating all that you have learnt during their programme of study into a single, sustained piece of writing allowing you to explore a topic in depth. The module involves the design, planning and execution of the dissertation, with the support of a supervisor, and may include the collection of empirical data or the use of secondary source material. You choose your own topics, and develop your own approaches to investigating that topic, drawing on earlier skills-based modules, the methodology training offered within the module itself and on interests developed through the degree programme.

You will be asked to write a 1,000 word proposal during semester 1 (ESS, AB1, 10% of assessment weighting) and an 8,000 word dissertation in semester 2 (DIS, AB1, 90% of assessment weighting).

You will be provided with academic support over two semesters. In the winter semester you are offered six 2 hour workshops where you are coached in research methods commonly used in the IR discipline. During this period you are expected to investigate a subject area and define your topic that leads to the completion of a 1,000 word proposal. You will then be assigned a supervisor who will provide supervision during the spring semester. Spring supervisions are broken down into three, thirty-minute meetings. The final 8,000 word dissertation will be completed for AB2.

Description

How do I write a literature review and design a research project? How do I develop a research question that may contribute to the literature of my academic discipline? These are the kinds of questions MA students often pose regarding their MA thesis. This course is designed to provide answers to these questions.

This course guides students through the process of envisioning, designing, and carrying out an academic research project. Throughout the course, students will develop their own MA thesis research projects by learning: how to formulate research questions based on an effective review of the current literature; how to develop a causal and/or constitutive research design to answer this question; how to adopt some of the data collection and analytical tools commonly used in the humanities; and how to deliver both professional ‘conference-style’ presentations and constructive feedback as discussant.

The first half of the course will consist of lectures. Here, we’ll enter into strategies for writing your thesis, go through the key components of the thesis, and venture into qualitative methodology. You’ll learn to identify a research question and evaluate the evidence to answer your question. The second part of the course consists of seminars. The first two seminars seek to provide practical guidance for designing and executing your research. The final seminars are reserved for conference style presentations in small groups.

Course objectives

The purpose of the course is to prepare the student academically for being able to engage in self-directed research towards their MA thesis in International Relations (International Studies and European Union Studies). After successful completion of this course students should be able to:

Synthesize the academic state of the art into an effective literature review

Formulate a research question with the potential to contribute to scientific knowledge

Design research to answer a research question

Gather and analyze sources of evidence to answer a research question

Present research findings in a manner appropriate to the intended audience

Conduct research in an ethical manner

Situate their research within an ontological and epistemological framework

Module overview.

The researching and writing of an 8,000-word dissertation provides you with the opportunity to integrate and hone a variety of skills acquired and extended during your studies, and to significantly deepen your knowledge of a topic of your choice.

In many ways, the dissertation is the culmination of your studies in the Division of Politics & International Relations.

Writing a dissertation will require you to research, compile, analyse, summarise, assess, argue, formulate, structure, and evaluate.

As part of the module, students:

(1) are assigned a dissertation supervisor

(2) attend whole cohort lectures, group meetings with their supervisor, and individual meetings with their supervisor (those on Study Abroad may miss some meetings, but will have access to Blackboard).

(3) submit 2,000 word short assignments that, following revision based on the grade and feedback received, become constitutive parts of the dissertation

(4) submit the 8,000 words dissertation.

Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

• Identify a research puzzle, formulate a clearly stated research question, and justify the topic of the dissertation.
• Implement a well-formulated research design/method and conduct independent data collection/evidence gathering
• Review relevant academic literature and critically assess the main arguments and explanations proposed by scholars to answer the research question addressed in the dissertation
• Analyse evidence and assess the explanatory power of theoretical arguments in light of empirical findings/evidence

The researching and writing of an 8,000 word dissertation is a year-long project of largely independent study. The examiners will be looking for evidence that the thesis accurately reflects the title. They will look for a clear analysis and a coherent, consistent argument, informed by a good knowledge of available sources. They will expect accurate spelling, punctuation, grammar, good general presentation, etc., correct and complete referencing, and a full bibliography. These criteria are to be met by the student being examined, whilst a supervisor will offer formal advice as to structure and argument. Students will be assigned an individual supervisor, but also receive guidance via whole cohort lectures. Students will get formal training on how to write a dissertation in different fields of political science and will be offered tailored advice on how to successfully complete a piece of original research.

It is intended to serve as a 'gateway' course providing a foundation for other international politics courses. Abstract In fact, the need to study the performance of security organizations is essential in understanding the complex structure in which they operate in and their strategic partners, objectives, in order to reach a point of clarity/convergence on strengthening policy formation as a whole given the current political climate. This will eventually give way to further research being conducted in the field of security, for the purpose of evaluating decision-making mechanisms and to effectively utilize the existing structures and possibilities in the longer term. Eventually, this will be a greater advantage to government bodies by constructing policies which serve the national interest and the greater good of the Jordanian people in the long term. Why do countries go to war with each other and why do they cooperate? How do domestic institutions or individual leaders impact a country’s external behaviour? Do international laws and institutions have any influence in global affairs? These types of questions have been central to the study of international relations for centuries. In the 20th century, Western scholars continued this tradition and established International Relations (IR) as a social science. This introductory course will examine the major theories of international conflict and cooperation that have emerged from this body of scholarship, as well as critiques of the discipline through the lenses of gender, race, and non-Western identity. It will also cover thematic issues such as economic interdependence, global governance, nuclear weapons, transnational movements, and the rise of new powers. The course provides an introduction to IR theory and instances in which insights from IR can illuminate the dynamics of real-world phenomena.

Conference Speaker Biographies

Annie Bourneuf is Professor of Art History at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and author of Behind the Angel of History: The Angelus Novus and Its Interleaf (The University of Chicago Press 2022) and Paul Klee: The Visible and the Legible (The University of Chicago Press 2015). Professor Bourneuf’s research centers on modernism, mostly in Central Europe, with an emphasis on its relations with politics, technologies of reproduction, religion, and class.

Charles W. “Mark” Haxthausen is Robert Sterling Clark Professor of Art History (em.) at Williams College. Professor Haxthausen has recently translated works by Carl Einstein, A Mythology of Forms: Selected Writings on Art (The University of Chicago Press 2019), co-edited Berlin: Culture and Metropolis (University of Minnesota Press 1991; reprint 2009), and is author of other published works on German art, and the relation between museums and the university. Professor Haxthausen’s research focuses on modern and contemporary European art, with an emphasis on Germany, in particular painters Paul Klee, Max Beckmann, Sigmar Polke, the critics Carl Einstein and Walter Benjamin, and the German Dada movement.

Christine Helmer  is Professor of German and Religious Studies at Northwestern University, and the Peter B. Ritzma Chair of Humanities. Professor Helmer is author of How Luther Became the Reformer (Westminster John Knox Press 2019) and co-author of Ordinary Faith in Polarized Times: Justification and the Pursuit of Justice (Baylor University Press 2023) and editor of The Medieval Luther (Mohr Siebeck 2020). Professor Helmer’s research centers on the theology of Christianity, particularly German intellectual history since 1500, and with a specific focus on Martin Luther, Friedrich Schleiermacher, and early twentieth-century German culture, as well as constructive theology.

Gillian Hemme   is a doctoral student in the Interdisciplinary Ph.D. program in Theatre and Drama program at Northwestern University and is conducting research for her dissertation,   Reclaiming the Body: Performances in and of Catholic Institutionalization in Twentieth-Century Ireland . Her research and performance practices center on embodied understandings of carceral violence, with a focus on Ireland’s Magdalene Laundries.

Isabel von Holt   is Wissenschaftliche Angestelle (post-doc) in Liberal Studies/German Studies in the Institute for Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Hamburg and has previously taught as DAAD Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of  German at Northwestern University. Dr. von Holt is author of Figurationen des Bösen im barocken Trauerspiel: Eine Studie zu Andreas Gryphius und Daniel Casper von Lohenstein (De Gruyter 2022)). Dr. von Holt’s research centers on the German baroque and its reception in twentieth-century Latin American literature, as well as gender/sexuality, migration, and Hubert Fichte.

Jacqueline Mariña is Professor of Philosophy at Purdue University. Professor Mariña is author of a recently completed manuscript on Immanuel Kant’s philosophical ethics; Transformation of the Self in the Thought of Friedrich Schleiermacher (Oxford University Press 2008); and editor of the Cambridge Companion to Friedrich Schleiermacher (Cambridge University Press 2005). Professor Mariña’s research centers on ethics and philosophy of religion, with a special focus on the philosophy of Kant and his reception in Friedrich Schleiermacher and Rudolf Otto.

Robert A. Orsi is Professor of Religious Studies and History at Northwestern University and the Grace Craddock Nagle Chair of Catholic Studies. Professor Orsi is author of  History and Presence  (The Belknap Press of Harvard University Press 2016), Between Heaven and Earth: The Religious Worlds People Make and the People Who Study Them (Princeton University Press 2005), in addition to other prize-winning books. Professor Orsi’s research focuses on the theory and history of the study of religion, urban religion, autobiography and scholarly writing, gender/sexuality, saints, and New York.

Michael Puett is Walter C. Klein Professor of Chinese History and Anthropology and member of the Committee on the Study of Religion at Harvard University. Professor Puett is author of The Ambivalence of Creation: Debates Concerning Innovation and Artifice in Early China (Stanford University Press 2001); co-editor of After Wisdom: Sapiential Traditions and Ancient Scholarship in Comparative Perspective (Brill 2023); and co-author of Ritual and its Consequences: An Essay on the Limits of Sincerity (Oxford University Press 2008). Professor Puett’s research focuses on historical anthropology, anthropology of religion, ritual theory, anthropology of the state, comparative anthropology, and China.

Jason A. Springs is Professor of Religion, Ethics, and Peace Studies at the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies in the Keough School of Global Affairs at the University of Notre Dame. Professor Springs is author of Healthy Conflict in Contemporary American Society: From Enemy to Adversary (Cambridge University Press 2020) and co-author of Religious Nationalism: A Reference Handbook (ABC-Clio 2013). Professor Spring’s research centers on the integration of religious ethics with moral philosophy, political and social theories with specific attention to modern European and North American contexts, particularly religious toleration, restorative justice, democratic theories and practices for peacebuilding.

Christopher J. Wild i s Peter B. Ritzma Professor in the Department of Germanic Studies, the Committee on Theater and Performance Studies, and the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Chicago. Professor Wild is author of Descartes’ Meditative Turn: Cartesian Thought as Spiritual Practice (Stanford University Press 2024) and Theater der Keuschheit - Keuschheit des Theaters: Zur Geschichte der (Anti-)Theatralität von Gryphius bis Kleist (Rombach litterae 2003), and co-editor of Cultures of Communication, Theologies of Media in Early Modern Europe and Beyond (University of Toronto Press 2017). Professor Wild’s research focuses on intersections of literature, theater history, philosophy, and religious thought, particularly in early modern and Enlightenment German literature and culture .

Brynn Nguyen wins 2024 Tomato Can Loving Cup Award

Known for her dedication to mentorship, leadership, and community service, Brynn Nguyen, ’24 BSB, is the winner of the 2024 Tomato Can Loving Cup Award, the most prestigious award the Carlson School of Management bestows on an undergraduate student.

She received this honor as part of the undergraduate commencement ceremony on May 13.

“It feels so amazing,” Nguyen said after the ceremony. “I obviously knew that I was nominated, but all the people I’ve had classes with are just so amazing. Just to know that I could be amongst them and that I could get chosen out of everyone, it just feels so cool. And then to have my family here from Vietnam and everything, and to see the commencement, it feels really nice.”

As a finance major and leadership minor graduating with a 3.94 GPA, Nguyen exemplifies academic excellence. But beyond that, she’s stood out for her deep commitment to mentorship and community outreach. She’s served as a Carlson School Emerging Leaders of Color (ELOC) Mentor, a Carlson Outreach Ambassador (OA), and a UMN First Year Leadership Institute (FYLI) Mentor.

Through her work with ELOC and OA, she mentored high school and middle school students respectively, helping them prepare for college. With FYLI, Nguyen mentored first-year students from across the University of Minnesota. In 2023, she received the President’s Student Leadership & Service Award, which recognizes the accomplishments and contributions of outstanding student leaders at the University.

“While [a passion for learning] is evident through my examples of scholarship, I learn even more while engaging in service and leadership,” Nguyen wrote in her nomination materials for the Tomato Can Loving Cup Award. “I started my roles by backing each interaction with a student with the intention of teaching or mentoring them, but it turns out that they’re teaching me how to be a more empathetic, engaging, and fair-minded leader.”

In addition to her mentorship efforts, Nguyen served as Marketing Coordinator for the Vietnamese Student Association’s 2022 Tết show, engaged with prospective students and their families as a Carlson School Ambassador, and worked in the Leadership Minor office.

A 2022–24 Ecolab Sustainability Scholar, Nguyen was on the Dean’s List for all her semesters at the Carlson School and graduated with High Distinction. She participated in the 2022 Accenture Innovation Challenge, where her team earned a top-three ranking in the Midwest. Nguyen also interned at Procter & Gamble and Straumann Group.

As part of receiving the Tomato Can Loving Cup Award, Nguyen is eligible for a half-tuition scholarship to the Carlson School Full-Time MBA program following two years of professional work experience.

The oldest award given to students by the Carlson School, Tomato Can Loving Cup’s history dates to 1929 when students asked Dean Russell Stevenson to present an outstanding service award to a senior. Henry Hilton, ’29 BSB, volunteered to make the trophy that would be presented to the winner. As a joke, he fashioned a trophy from a tomato soup can nailed to a wooden candlestick that belonged to his mother. To Hilton’s surprise, Stevenson presented him with his own creation, which became known as the Tomato Can Loving Cup Award. The increasingly rickety soup can is given each year.
