Current Master's student: The faculty and staff at UPenn really make the university stand out from the rest. I researched many graduate programs across NJ, PA, and NY and attended open houses to help me find my fit. UPenn's professors are not only experienced nurse practitioners but actively practicing NPs. They have insight that is invaluable and a true passion for preparing the next class of nurse practitioners. I would highly recommend their Adult-Gerontology Acute Care NP program to nurses looking to advance their careers in this way. The only thing I can say in terms of areas for improvement is that the onboarding process for admitted students could be more communicative as to what the next steps are and the start dates for enrollment/classes. I've also reached out regarding financial aid and was referred back to their website which is where I started. I provided specific concerns and information which were not addressed via email. I will try to schedule a phone call. ... Read 5 reviews

Doctoral Student: I have attended 4 semesters of an 8-semester BSN-DNP program with a focus on Family and Emergency Nursing Practice. Over the past year, the best parts of my experience have been the sincere and welcoming culture of my professors, the reassurance that I'm receiving a strong education in my field, and the strong support I have with the small cohort of students in this track. My cohorts have been, without exception, kind, considerate, supportive, team-oriented, and encouraging--from those ahead of me in school passing down their supplies to the part-time students who become a part of our study group for maybe 1 or 2 classes. It's truly been a fantastic experience in partnership with cohorts who are for the advancement of the group instead of themselves as individuals. The worst parts have been expensive trips for on-campus intensives, worrying about the stability of my financial future after graduation, and some poor organization on the part of clinical placement here in Nashville, TN. ... Master's Student: I am a student at Nell Hudson Woodruff School of Nursing in the Master of Nursing Pathway to MSN program. I absolutely love it. The courses are very rigorous as this is an accelerated program and this is a top nursing program. The instructors were very knowledgeable and the exams were an accurate review of what we were covering in class. We are given one day of the week each semester that we do not have anything going on at school. For example. first semester was Mondays off. We had class on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, lab on Thursdays, and clinical on Friday. It was an awesome schedule. The main negative was that whether you pass or fail is based only on your exam grades. You might be passing with your overall grade but if your exam grades don't average out to the passing score, you fail the class. ... Read 11 reviews

The staff seem to care a lot about the well-being and success of their students and I have found a wonderful sense of community amongst my cohort mates. Frontier Nursing University

Master's Student: The midwifery program at Frontier Nursing University is an accelerated program that can be done full time and graduate in 15 months working part time. The reason I decided to go to Frontier was that they offered quarter terms and just wanted to go straight through to finish faster. The second reason is there was many positive feedback of prior students. I have been there for 3 terms and I can actually tell you how supported I feel with the faculty. Even though it is online, I can still feel how personal they make it that we are there for a reason and we will succeed. I found that the difference of this university from others is that we had to go for orientation at the campus for 3 days. During that time we were introduced to faculty from our program, went over financial aid, resources that the university offered to help our academic journey, and most importantly made connections with our classmates that endure this journey as well. ... Master's Student: The Masters of Science in Midwifery program at Bastyr University is the best direct entry midwifery school in the U.S.! The coursework is centered around healthcare justice which requires students as future midwifery clinicians to examine their own bias and how this may affect people groups who do not look like them. I have been able to uproot some of my own implicit bias to better serve women and families. Additionally, Bastyr's MSM program uses medical model who attend the Bastyr mock clinic for students to gain real clinical practice with feedback which sets students up for success when entering their clinical sites. Niche User: Beginning nursing school during the COVID-19 pandemic has been challenging; however, the OHSU SoN has adapted well to accommodate for the new safety regulations. OHSU SoN is an environment that supports and encourages diversity; however, at times, the instructors (on the La Grande campus specifically) seem to be less educated on some diversity topics, which is demonstrated in class lectures. It would be beneficial for instructors to undergo more diversity training so they are able to educate their students about these topics more thoroughly. The tuition and materials required for the program are quite expensive for students, yet there have often been times where lab supplies are old, broken, or unusable, and faculty have had to bring in their own supplies to make up for the lack of supplies provided by OHSU. For example, the hospital beds and mannequins in skills lab need to be replaced. Overall, OHSU SoN is a great learning environment and offers many great graduate programs. ... Read 4 reviews

OHSU School of Nursing alums committed to providing nurse-midwifery care in rural communities

Two OHSU School of Nursing alums were recently featured in a story highlighting their commitment to providing their midwifery services in rural communities across America. Read about their amazing work.

Nurse-midwifery as a career

Nurse-midwifery offers a wide variety of professional career pathways. Nurse-Midwives are known for their evidence-based care that is grounded in affirming the power of women, honoring the normalcy of their lifecycles, and prioritizing compassionate partnerships with women. Beyond pregnancy and childbirth care, services provided by Nurse-Midwives include primary, well-woman gynecology, family planning, fertility, and newborn care during the first 28 days of life.

Studying to be a Nurse-Midwife in Oregon

Oregon is a highly appealing state in which to learn Nurse-Midwifery. Beyond the geographic benefit that Portland is 75 miles east of the Pacific Ocean and 75 miles west of the Cascade mountain range, the Nurse-Midwifery profession has a long-term, strong, foothold in maternity, gynecologic, and reproductive care here. Nurse-Midwives attend almost 20% of the births in the Portland metropolitan area. They are employed in almost every hospital in the area. The home birth community has a strong presence in Portland. Nurse-Midwives in Oregon are licensed, independent nurse-practitioners who have prescriptive authority. Many work outside of maternity care, providing excellent care at Planned Parenthood or private gynecology offices.  The American College of Nurse-Midwives' local affiliate provides strong student support as well as an opportunity for students to volunteer on behalf of the profession. Our students benefit from all of these wonderful opportunities in Oregon.

Student clinical experiences at OHSU (and beyond)

The OHSU Nurse-Midwifery Faculty Practice is a robust 30+ year old practice at OHSU Hospital and Clinics, which is an academic health center. We attend a large portion of the births at OHSU hospital. Our practice is the chief clinical site of our midwifery students. Students work one-on-one with faculty preceptors in the outpatient midwifery clinic, birthing rooms, mother-baby unit, triage unit, and lactation clinics. At some point during the 4 quarters of intrapartum (labor and birth) clinical experiences, each student is offered the opportunity to learn "off-the-hill" (OHSU is located about 2/3 of the way up an 1100 foot hill) in other sites that provide opportunities for working with diverse patient populations and practices. The integration (final) practicum is situated in a variety of possible sites in Oregon or beyond.  Students receive more than 1000 hours of supervised clinical practice in the program.

Program Philosophy Faculty Practice OHSU Marquam Hill Portland campus

Our faculty are special

Our Nurse-Midwifery faculty have extensive experience in full-scope Nurse-Midwifery and teaching midwifery graduate students, ranging from several years to over 3 decades. Faculty who teach in the classroom work directly with students in the faculty practice. Many of our faculty are Spanish-speaking. Some of our faculty have worked in out-of-hospital birth settings or have volunteered internationally. All faculty love sharing their passion for Nurse-Midwifery with our midwifery students.

"I graduated from the midwifery program in 2008 while completing an MPH. The abundant   opportunities available to students  for learning and collaboration helped to expand my world as a future health care provider and advocate for public health policy. My faculty and colleagues were supportive, inspiring and wholly committed simultaneously to our education and to the care of their patients. I had a blast as a student...so much so that I came back! Now, as  one of the OHSU Nurse-Midwifery  faculty, I hope to help midwifery students thrive in the clinical environment and beyond. I can attest--having been on both sides of the program--that it's special here and that our graduates leave with the skills to practice anywhere in the world."

-Laura Jenson

Pathways of education for Nurse-Midwifery

Some students enter our program after completing a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing. These full-time students typically are eligible for Nurse-Midwifery certification after completing 3 years of didactic and clinical education and receiving the Doctor of Nursing degree.

Most of our students, who do not have a Bachelor's Degree in nursing, are admitted to the Accelerated Bachelor's Program/ Nurse-Midwifery Graduate Program. This option allows students to pre-identify Nurse-Midwifery as their graduate area of intent. They progress seamlessly into the midwifery program after completing a rigorous accelerated bachelor's in nursing program at OHSU. They then achieve a Doctor of Nursing Practice (D.N.P.) degree and are eligible for Nurse-Midwifery certification.

Studying and learning

Students gain knowledge.

The Nurse-Midwifery program at OHSU prepares students to meet the unique health care needs of women. Nurse-Midwives provide primary and gynecologic care to women as well as specialty care and support for expecting mothers and their infants. In addition to the reproductive science, students examine the influences of culture; tradition and the social, economic and political forces that influence the health of women. All OHSU students participate in a one year interprofessional education course where they study with other health profession students, such as medicine, pharmacy, and dentistry. The program strives to prepare compassionate, skilled clinician-scholars willing to address issues that affect the lives of women.

The Nurse-Midwifery program of study has been designed to offer a combination of graduate core courses, advanced practice core and midwifery specialty courses. This combination prepares our students for practice in the field and simultaneously provides a framework for clinical leadership and policy that is critical for any midwife in practice. The Nurse-Midwifery program of study provides students with a solid foundation in the scientific basis for clinical practice. Students develop the knowledge and skills to provide safe Nurse-Midwifery care using sound clinical judgment to care for women in the context of her family.

The Nurse-Midwifery program offers strong clinical experience with a focus on evidence-based practice. Graduates of the Nurse-Midwifery specialty are eligible to take the national certification examination of the American Midwifery Certification Board.

A student's perspective

"Plain and simple, regardless of the program, the experience of becoming a Nurse-Midwife is life changing. That said, I could not be more confident in my education at OHSU and proud of my journey from the Acc Bac to Midwifery to D.N.P. program. My cohort was supportive and without a doubt, kept me going when it all felt impossible. Getting me out for a quick lunch time run in Forest Park, lots of fabulous baked goods for class snacks, and really big hugs and laughter, these women are my sisters! The midwifery faculty practice provided consistent mentorship and was a great opportunity to get to know our educators as midwives and women. Where style may differ, their commitment to women, evidence-based care, and safety were constant, creating a holistic learning experience where I learned I can be a great midwife and I can be me."

Now as I find myself at the beginning my career as a midwife with a D.N.P., I feel prepared for this new journey. I am not alone, I am stronger because of the community I come from and can rely on while I continue on this path of walking along side women.

The autonomous practice of Midwifery is based on the health promotion model and the concept of interdependent practice – the promotion and effective utilization of the unique aspects of each health care professional’s and client’s knowledge and skills joined together to ensure safe, satisfying health care for every client. Midwifery practice encompasses the provision of family-centered, comprehensive care to essentially healthy people and to newborns with respect for human dignity and worth, variety in cultural forms, and the client’s right to self-determination in health care.

The faculty further believe that to provide optimal holistic care, midwives must promote the empowerment of all people in controlling their lives and their health. Midwives need to use the political process for the benefit of their clients throughout the world and their profession. Midwives also need to participate with other professionals in health planning, and to create and institute systems for the delivery of safe, cost-effective health care to all socioeconomic and cultural groups.

Costs & Tuition

Your program costs will depend on how many course units (CU) you take per semester.

Applicants to this program may be eligible for the Leonard A. Lauder Community Care Nurse Practitioner Program Fellowship , which offers a free Penn education to budding NPs who are committed to working in underserved communities after graduation.

Discount available for employees of our Academic Practice Partners. Click here to learn more.

To be considered a full-time student you must have a course load of 3 CUs or more per semester, including summer terms; anything less, in any semester, is considered part-time. If you apply as a full-time student, but switch to part-time, lowering the number of CUs you take per semester will decrease the cost of your tuition and fees, which will in turn lower your student budget and reduce your financial aid eligibility. You will no longer be eligible for nursing grant or endowed scholarship funds.

The charts below outline costs based on the school year/summer sessions as well as include estimated other expenses like housing.

Tuition & Fee Rates and Living Expense Budgets (Fall 2023 & Spring 2024)

*Category for Other Personal Expenses includes a budget for the cost of Student Health Insurance. Please keep in mind that the school does not bill the student for books and personal expenses. We do, however, build these figures into the Student Budget to better help students and their families plan for all costs associated with a Penn Nursing education. Likewise, loan eligibility and financial aid is based on the total student budget per term, not just on the cost of tuition and fees.

Every student’s living situation and personal expenses are different, but below are the projected academic year Summer and Fall/Spring costs per CU. These can be multiplied by the total number of CUs in your part-time plan of study to estimate the total cost of an MSN program.

Summer 2023 - per course unit (CU):

Summer 2023 - living expenses:, fall 2023 or spring 2024 - per course unit (cu), program outcomes.

Our graduates go on to become home-birth practitioners, birth center practice directors, directors of midwifery educational programs, and directors of CNM services in large teaching and small community hospitals.

Upon completion, the graduate will be:

  • A safe, entry-level midwife who meets the criteria of the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM) for the practice of midwifery
  • A provider of primary health care for people throughout their lifetime
  • Able to empower clients to participate in their own health care

  • Knowledgeable about the basic concepts of public policy in health care practice settings
  • An active participant in life-long learning, education, and research
  • Proficient in the utilization of information technology so as to provide and promote high quality health care

Get more program details.

Emphasizing healthcare services for women and for gender-related health needs, the curriculum provides a detailed study of antepartum, labor and birth, gynecological, newborn and preventive care.

The role and image of, and misconceptions about, the nurse-midwife in contemporary society are explored. The historic, political, social, and economic bases of nurse-midwifery practice are examined. Students become familiar with the role of the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM) in professional practice and resources available through the ACNM, as well as regulations and legislation which guide, interpret, and provide a legal and ethical base for future nurse-midwifery practice.

This course focuses on application of the Nurse-Midwifery process for the care of healthy women during childbirth and the newborn.

This course focuses on application of the Nurse-Midwifery process to the care of mothers and newborns with complications. The goal of this course is to further develop the roles and responsibilities of the health care provider in caring for women and families who have high risk situations or conditions. Complex gynecologic care is discussed for mastery level.

Clinical placement is a required educational component of Baylor’s online nursing programs. The hands-on learning, supervision and applying theory into practice prepare you for your future role in the field. Many students also find potential employment opportunities at their placement site upon graduation.

How Does This Benefit You?

At Baylor, we believe you are only as successful as your training—that’s why we collaborate with our students to identify and secure sites and preceptors for all clinical rotations. Our staff will sort through the logistics of clinical placement so you can focus more on coursework and building competencies as a nurse.

How Does the Clinical Placement Process Work?

As a newly enrolled student, you’ll partner with our clinical team to determine unique placement needs. We’ll collaborate with you to identify placement opportunities, including locating and securing a quality site and preceptor during your program. You’ll be responsible for several preparation tasks, including filling out forms, passing a drug screening, background check and proof of recommended vaccinations.

What is the Placement Experience Like?

During your placement experience, you’ll have access to faculty and resources to support you on and off-site, including mentorship and guidance for procedures, patient interactions and proficiencies. At the end of your rotation, you and your preceptor will review requirements and complete any surveys. You may receive new details for your next clinical experience if you have multiple rotations.

What Can I Expect from My Preceptor?

Your preceptor is your on-site role model and will help you develop as a nurse during your clinical rotation. They will focus on helping you bridge gaps between theory and practice, orientate you to the practice setting, help you plan clinical assignments, provide 1:1 supervision, give daily feedback and complete required paperwork on your behalf.

  Baylor Nursing By The Numbers

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions regarding Baylor University's Online DNP-Midwifery program

Students typically complete the DNP program in the following timeframe. Please note that actual length to program completion will vary depending on the student's background and selected track.

  • BSN holders typically complete our DNP program in three (3) years and four (4) months, skipping the Master’s degree program entirely
  • MSN holders typically complete our DNP program in 18 to 24 months

Yes. Baylor University’s online Doctor of Nursing Practice programs are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE**). The DNP Nurse-Midwifery online program is accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education (ACME*).

A Doctor of Nursing Practice is the optimal pathway for registered nurses who are seeking preparation at the highest level of nursing practice. As a terminal degree, a DNP degree is the highest level of education in the field and represents the most advanced nursing degree available. There is no further opportunity for educational advancement within this profession. Graduates of Baylor’s online DNP program are prepared as exemplary nursing leaders and visionary nurses who can actively shape and improve patient outcomes, policy, processes and the future of nursing.

DNPs earn a higher average salary than an MSN (on average) and have more overall options for career goals. Many DNP graduates enter into positions with more responsibility to care for both individual and population health needs as nursing team leads and other expanded roles. The career outlook for DNPs is anticipated to be very strong as the AACN is advocating to require a DNP for all APRN roles by the year 2025.

If your MSN degree is in any of the following disciplines, you may need to participate in our full program. Please speak with an Enrollment Advisor for more information.

  • MSN-Nurse Educator
  • MSN-Clinical Leadership
  • MSN-Informatics
  • MSN-Leadership
  • MSN-Administration

You must have completed your MSN in Nurse-Midwifery with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, and Nurse-Midwifery Board Certification. Additional documents or experience may be required - download your course guide to learn more .

Baylor University's Louise Herrington School of Nursing understands the needs and challenges of busy RNs. Our online coursework allows you to balance your career with your other commitments.

  DNP vs. MSN?

The DNP is a terminal degree that prepares nurses for leadership, given the constantly changing demands of the U.S. healthcare system. Currently, steps are being taken to transition the DNP degree as the standard for entry-level advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs). While the profession is not yet there, earning your DNP helps future-proof your career as a qualified nurse leader.

According to AANC , nurses desiring an APRN education with the choice between a doctoral or master's level preparation would find it far more cost-effective to spend additional time towards their DNP and be prepared for future practice.

"Job opportunities are far greater, and it provides you with the knowledge and expertise to have a seat at the board table," according to Angela Renee Stewart , DNP, APRN, ACNP-BC, AOCNP, TTS, Clinical Assistant Professor at Baylor University, Louise Herrington School of Nursing.

Why Earn an MS in Midwifery?

Midwives have cared for birthing women since the beginning of human history. Today, midwives are independent, licensed professionals. They are educated at SUNY Downstate at the graduate level. Midwives provide full scope care to birthing persons, families, and communities. They work within the health care system, collaborating with physicians, social workers, nutritionists, nurses, and other health care providers and specialists as the need arises.

Why Earn an MS in Midwifery at SUNY Downstate?

Midwifery is a cornerstone practice at SUNY Downstate: Our program's roots go back to 1932, when the nation's first formal educational program for midwives began. Today, we are recognized nationwide for providing excellence in education, strong clinical experiences for students,  innovation, and diversity. SUNY Downstate developed the first integrated program in the United States for people with nursing licensure and those from a great variety of professional and educational backgrounds.

The program emphasis its relationship to the community Downstate serves. Although our graduates can and do provide midwifery services in all settings, our particular focus is on urban, underserved  populations, many of which include large numbers of immigrants and/or persons of color. In any given year, Black, Latinx or Asian students represent 30 to 70 percent of the midwifery program’s student body.

What You Will Learn

  • This graduate-level program prepares you to become a safe beginning practitioner, meeting standards set by the American College of Nurse-Midwives.

Fairfield University’s Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) in Midwifery is a degree that focuses on the assessment and application of existing evidence to improve practice. Taught as a cohort program, students are educated in the fundamental skills necessary to make a difference in the discipline of midwifery and in healthcare of women and newborns: population-level health care, organizational systems, leadership, business management, clinical scholarship, information technology, and policy-making. The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) in Nurse Midwifery concentration, is a full-time, partially front-loaded program, designed to meet the competencies for the practice doctorate in midwifery set forth by the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM) and to meet the ACNM Core Competencies for Basic Midwifery Practice.

The program prepares students as expert nurse midwives for every stage and in every setting in which midwifery care is delivered to women. Because nurse midwives are responsible for direct patient care, students gain hands-on experience in providing gynecologic, antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum, newborn, and breastfeeding care under the supervision of Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) faculty. Nurse midwifery students will attend births in a variety of settings with a heavy focus on normal physiological birth. They will also be prepared to recognize and co-manage high-risk obstetric and gynecologic cases within an interdisciplinary healthcare team.

The faculty of the Marion Peckham Egan School of Nursing and Health Studies DNP-NM program adopts the Philosophy of Care from the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM). The Egan School is committed to educating nurse midwives at the doctoral level who are prepared to provide excellent midwifery care and who will serve as leaders in the healthcare setting. Our graduates will have a deep commitment to social justice and will be invested in improving care for women and families.

The Egan School believes that nurse midwifery education should be rooted in the science and art of midwifery, teaching students how to provide holistic, individualized, family-centered care, with an emphasis on shared decision-making and practicing according to evidence-based guidelines. The Egan School believes that it is important for interprofessional healthcare education and trauma-informed care to be woven throughout the holistic nurse midwifery curriculum. Our graduates will appreciate aspects of palliative and supportive midwifery care during perinatal loss.

The Egan School also believes midwifery education should foster a deepening of one’s own commitment to caring for vulnerable populations. Our graduates will practice midwifery in effective and ethical ways in all settings, respecting the dignity of every person.

Nurse-Midwifery

Midwifery education is a synthesis drawing upon the student’s maturity and willingness to take active responsibility for their learning and the faculty’s experience and knowledge of the profession. While the learning styles of students may vary, mutual respect between students and faculty solidifies the midwifery educational process at NYU Meyers. Nurse-Midwifery is a blending of science balanced with art, the learning of theory is simultaneously reinforced by practical hands-on application and experience. In the end, students are maturated not merely with knowledge of midwifery but experience in its practical, clinical application.

The faculty’s commitment to didactic learning of a specific knowledge base is not compromised by a focus on imparting the Midwifery Model of Care. The faculty instill a belief in the right of every person to receive care in the context of their uniqueness in all dimensions, namely, the spiritual, emotional, psychological, psychosocial, and physical. The Midwifery Model of Care, respects, enhances, and supports the normal physiological process while understanding the importance of independent, consultative, and referral practice components.

Program content is based on the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM) core competencies for basic midwifery practice.  An evidence-based approach to teaching midwifery competency is utilized by a faculty representing a range of expertise in all areas and places of midwifery practice. Students are encouraged through a problem-based learning approach to actively participate in their education as well as that of their colleagues.  At NYU Meyers we teach our student nurse-midwives how to be self-educators/learners. Ultimately, the goal is not merely competency but an understanding that midwifery education is a career-long process. To sustain competency, evaluation of care through self-examination, evaluation of practice as part of continuous quality improvement (CQI), and development of the evidence base for practice through research are essential to setting and maintaining standards.

The provision of comprehensive, integrated, ethical care requires cultural awareness, sensitivity, and competence on the part of the practitioner. In addition to core competencies and comprehension of the Midwifery Model of Care, student nurse-midwives are also given an understanding of the commitment that is expected of them as members of the profession at large. Nurse-Midwives are advocates for the needs of those they care for throughout their lifespans. They must be socially and politically vigilant and active in ensuring that public policies effectively ensure all health needs. Student midwives are groomed as future leaders. Midwifery is not just a career, it is a calling. All of this represents the philosophy and the commitment of the NYU Rory Meyers College of Nursing Nurse-Midwifery Program.

The NYU Meyers midwifery program faculty and staff stand in solidarity with our BIPOC and LGBTQ+ students. We are committed to supporting student success and are actively developing strategies to ensure a positive experience with the ultimate goal of diversifying the profession of midwifery. Prospective and current students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to visit the website of the  Office of Global Inclusion, Diversity, and Strategic Innovation  to stay abreast of events and resources available to the entire NYU community. If you have any questions or concerns as it relates to diversity and inclusion or anti-racism work within the midwifery program, please contact  Sascha James-Conterelli , Program Director.

Leveraging generative AI to modernize nursing education

May 13, 2024 Brett Stursa

Michalowski

Martin Michalowski

The proliferation of new generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools can be challenging for nurse educators and clinicians to keep up with, as the potential benefits also come with new challenges.

Associate Professor Martin Michalowski, PhD, FAMIA, examines generative AI in nursing education and provides recommendations for nurse educators to optimize its use in recent publications.

Michalowski’s most recent article, The ChatGPT Effect: Nursing Education and Generative Artificial Intelligence, published in the February issue of the Journal of Nursing Education, examines generative AI in nursing education more broadly and urges nurse educators to harness its potential.

Prompt engineering when using generative AI in nursing education, published in the January issue of Nurse Education in Practice, makes recommendations to integrate prompt engineering — the process of refining questions to get better results — in nursing education.

“Generative AI is one of the key required competencies and it needs to be integrated into the education nurses receive both as concepts to understand and as tools to use,” says Michalowski. “Similar to concepts in machine learning, natural language processing, automated reasoning, and other AI subfields, generative AI is transforming the provision of care. Therefore, it is important that nurses understand how to use it, and how its use impacts health care systems, providers and patients.”

Currently, he says that the most effective uses of generative AI in nursing classrooms is creating mock patient-related data and providing patient scenarios for practice.

“When applying learned theories or tools where patient-related data is needed, generative AI models are very useful for building synthetic data in different formats, like tables, free text notes, etc.,” says Michalowski.

“Additionally, generative AI enables critical thinking through the creation of patient use cases/scenarios. This application is one of the few where hallucinations — presenting output patterns as fact while they are clinically or factually incorrect — is acceptable. Students need to apply what they learned and use critical thinking to identify inaccuracies and contradictions in the use case. The instructor can also tailor the output use cases by providing important context for the learning exercise.”

Michalowski says it’s imperative nurse educators integrate AI competencies into their classrooms to ensure students are well equipped as future clinicians.

“Nurses have an incredible opportunity to lead health care’s transformation of clinical care with AI. They touch all aspects of the care process, understand the clinical problems and interface with patients. They are positioned to be the bridge between AI developers, health care practitioners and stakeholders,” says Michalowski. “However, to fully realize this potential they need basic AI competencies that aren’t currently part of their education.”

Graduate Programs

IUPUI offers over 250 graduate degrees to students interested in pursuing a Ph.D., a professional degree, a master's degree, or a graduate certificate. Several of these degrees are not offered by any other public institution in the state.

Accelerated bachelor’s to master’s degree programs allow ambitious IUPUI undergraduate students the opportunity to earn both a bachelor’s degree AND a master’s degree in a shorter time frame than if pursued independent of each other (i.e., 5 years vs. 6 years).
