Music is a vast and ever-growing field. Because of this, it can be challenging to find excellent music research topics for your essay or thesis. Although there are many examples of music research topics online, not all are appropriate.

What makes a strong music research topic.

A strong music research topic must be short, straightforward, and easy to grasp. The primary aim of music research is to apply various research methods to provide valuable insights into a particular subject area. Therefore, your topic must also address issues that are relevant to present-day readers.

Also, for your research topic to be compelling, it should not be overly generic. Try to avoid topics that seem to be too broad. A strong research topic is always narrow enough to draw out a comprehensive and relevant research question.

Tips for Choosing a Music Research Topic

  • Check with your supervisor. In some cases, your school or supervisor may have specific requirements for your research. For example, some music programs may favor a comparative instead of a descriptive or correlational study. Knowing what your institution demands is essential in choosing an appropriate research topic.
  • Explore scientific papers. Journal articles are a great way to find the critical areas of interest in your field of study. You can choose from a wide range of journals such as The Journal of Musicology and The Journal of the Royal Musical Association . These resources can help determine the direction of your research.
  • Determine your areas of interest. Choosing a topic you have a personal interest in will help you stay motivated. Researching music-related subjects is a painstakingly thorough process. A lack of motivation would make it difficult to follow through with your research and achieve optimal results.
  • Confirm availability of data sources. Not all music topics are researchable. Before selecting a topic, you must be sure that there are enough primary and secondary data sources for your research. You also need to be sure that you can carry out your research with tested and proven research methods.
  • Ask your colleagues: Asking questions is one of the many research skills you need to cultivate. A short discussion or brainstorming session with your colleagues or other music professionals could help you identify a suitable topic for your research paper.

What’s the Difference Between a Research Topic and a Research Question?

A research topic is a particular subject area in a much wider field that a researcher chooses to place his emphasis on. Most subjects are extensive. So, before conducting research, a researcher must first determine a suitable area of interest that will act as the foundation for their investigation.

Research questions are drawn from research topics. However, research questions are usually more streamlined. While research topics can take a more generic viewpoint, research questions further narrow the focus down to specific case studies or seek to draw a correlation between two or more datasets.

How to Create Strong Music Research Questions

Strong music research questions must be relevant and specific. Music is a broad field with many genres and possible research areas. However, your research question must focus on a single subject matter and provide valuable insights. Also, your research question should be based on parameters that can be quantified and studied using available research methods.

Finding Music Materials

Why use dissertations for your research.

Dissertations are excellent sources of trustworthy, thorough, and narrowly-focused research. They represent the cutting-edge of research on music, and provide in-depth analysis of everything for composers' styles, their works, and their lives. For performers, dissertations can be great sources for annotated bibliographies of repertoire, and they can also include detailed examination of specific works that can help with everything from tonal analysis to performance practice. Lastly, they include really helpful bibliographies and lists of references that can help you to find other relevant sources for your own research.

The dissertation databases below represent a range of resources:

  • Some provide   full-text access  to PDFs of dissertations (look for the PDF icon or a button that says download PDF)

Selecting a Thesis or Dissertation Topic for Graduate Students in Musicology

  • Resources for Graduate Students in Musicology

Some students enter graduate school with a very clear idea of their thesis or dissertation topic and follow through on that topic. Others enter with a clear idea of their topic but end up writing on a different topic altogether. Still others enter with no idea whatsoever and only gradually arrive at their topic.

Clearly there is no one way to select a topic for such a major project as a thesis or dissertation, and this page cannot promise to offer the golden secret for success. What follows is simply some general advice to guide you through this sometimes difficult process.

General Advice for All Graduate Students

Remember that selecting a topic is about more than just choosing subject matter; it is equally important that you identify a problem and formulate a specific question about it. Draw upon the skills you learned in Research Methodology and honed while working on seminar papers; if necessary, refer to the relevant pages in Wayne C. Booth et al., The Craft of Research.

Perhaps the most obvious and oft-repeated (but still important) advice is to choose a topic that interests you enough that it will hold your attention for a very long time, through the good and the bad. You want to ensure, even when stress weighs you down or you begin to grow weary of long hours in the archives, that you remain passionate about the topic and committed to seeing the project through to completion.

Another obvious but valuable piece of advice is to talk to your professors, other mentors, fellow students, and even your non-musical, non-academic friends about possible topics. Do this even before you spend considerable amounts of time brainstorming on your own. You never know what will come to the surface when discussing ideas with someone else, even someone who is far removed from your field.

One very important piece of advice, however: Never should you choose a topic only because someone suggests it to you and you don’t have any better ideas . Now, if someone suggests an idea that you absolutely love, that’s one thing, but you definitely do not want to choose a topic simply out of convenience. Overwhelmingly, the students who drop out of graduate programs midway through their thesis or dissertation are those whose topics were simply handed to them by their professors.

Many theses and dissertations grow out of papers written for seminars or other graduate courses. Sometimes the paper serves as the first step in a project on exactly the same topic, while at other times the paper may spark ideas for a similar inquiry in a related area. While you shouldn’t necessarily write a paper as though it were a thesis or dissertation chapter, after a paper is done you should always ask yourself if this is something that is worth expanding or doing more with. You should especially think about this if there is any one paper that you enjoyed more than any other.

If you have a vague idea of what you want to study but don’t have any ideas for the specific topic, read as much of the existing research on the general topic as you can. General reference books such as Cambridge Companions and Cambridge Handbooks can provide an excellent overview of the state of research into a field and offer unanswered questions that have yet to be explored in depth. Even just skimming titles and abstracts in RILM may help give you a good sense of the types of approaches that have been and are currently being taken to a given topic.

Another very helpful way to help define a specific topic from a vague idea is to attend conferences related to a specific field that interests you. Not only will you be exposed to the most recent research on the topic, but you will also have the opportunity to talk to other scholars and to make valuable connections that will serve you well as you proceed with the project. Some students have even met external committee members at conferences! Always keep your ear to the ground for announcements about upcoming conference and consider attending even if the travel expense is more than you are willing to spend; keep in mind that the CUA Graduate Student Association offers funding to help defray the costs of attending conferences, even if you’re not giving a paper.

As soon as you have selected a topic, it is crucial that you arrange a meeting with your adviser to discuss research protocol, to start putting together a timeline, and to go over the adviser's expected procedures for submitting outlines and drafts.

Advice for Master’s Students

Most students pursuing an M.A. in musicology intend to continue their studies in a Ph.D. program. In this regard, the thesis can serve one of two very different (but equally valid) functions:

  • The thesis may serve as a prelude for the Ph.D. dissertation. Similar to the expansion of a thesis from a seminar paper, the thesis may serve as the first step in a much larger project (for example, the thesis may explore one opera in detail, while the dissertation may explore an entire body of operas, including the one studied in the thesis), or the thesis may introduce you to a methodology that you then employ on a larger scale with a different but related topic. Thus, when choosing your topic, you may want to think about what could be useful in laying the groundwork for your dissertation.
  • In contrast, the thesis may offer an opportunity for you to develop a secondary field, one far removed from the topic of your dissertation. In today’s competitive job market, it is very important for job candidates to exhibit expertise in a number of areas. If you have vague ideas about topics in different fields, then you may want to consciously decide to pursue one area for the thesis and reserve the other one (whichever one you want to be your primary area) for the dissertation.

Advice for Doctoral Students

An important thing to think about when selecting your topic is the type of research methods you will draw upon while working on the dissertation. Many people have more focused time to research during the dissertation period than at any other point in their careers, so this is really the time to hone your skills in specific types of research methods. If you think you ever want to do archival research, work with sketches, do paleographical work, or any other specific type of research that takes many hours to learn, then make sure that your dissertation topic will give you the opportunity to do that kind of research.

Although it is important for musicologists to develop research interests in a number of fields, almost everyone is nevertheless identified by one primary field, which is typically defined by one’s dissertation. It is thus very important when selecting your topic to think about your life and career beyond graduate school. Your identity as a scholar—at least for the first decade or so after graduate school—will be very much linked to your dissertation, so it is important to make sure you are comfortable with that. Do you mind being pigeon-holed in this field (even if only temporarily)? What opportunities are available for someone in the field? More importantly, what kind of opportunities for future research does this topic hold? The dissertation is only the start of your scholarly career. Does this topic have much potential for you to be able to extract conference presentations and articles from the dissertation? Can you think of ways that you will be able to modify the dissertation into a book? (Most academic publishers frown upon books that simply rehash the dissertation, so is your topic one that can be reworked considerably for a book?) Can you think of other related topics that you will be able to explore in the same field?

Having said this, please do not use the current state of the job market as a prime criterion for your choice of topic; nor should you choose a topic based on what seem to be the “hot topics” in the field. Although it may seem that there are countless opportunities for, say, Americanists or pop music scholars while you are deciding upon a topic, by the time you enter the job market the field may have shifted dramatically. Just as you should never choose a topic simply because someone hands it to you, so should you never choose a topic based solely on what others seem to think are the sexiest, “hottest” areas. As long as your heart is in the topic and you do good work, you can achieve great success, even in what others may perceive as an “old-fashioned” field.

What Six Senior Music Majors’ Say About Their Theses

As the Spring semester concludes and in anticipation for the Class of 2024’s graduation, the Music Department asked six Senior Music Majors to expand on their creative theses and offer advice to future students preparing their own. The Music Department is proud to share the results of each Music Major’s cumulative work at Princeton, which highlights scholarly research and true mastery of their disciplines.

Jared Bozinko

Thesis: SIN PHONY for two soprano clarinets, two auxiliary clarinets, two saxophones, and two horns

Jared:  In the process of writing  SIN PHONY , I found inspiration in seemingly twee places. Poulenc’s  Sonata for horn, trumpet and trombone,  Prokofiev’s  Romeo and Juliet , a 1995 clarinet quartet by Met Opera clarinetist Sean Osborn, and Ligeti’s  Six Bagatelles , a quirky wind quintet version of his  Musica ricercata .  SIN PHONY  is a chamber piece, technically an octet, for clarinets, saxes, and horns. My advisor, Dr. Dmitri Tymoczko, has been indispensable to the process, guiding me all fall semester in writing short chamber music sketches, which became the basis of the material that makes up my thesis. The process was so smooth and, at points, genuinely fun, and it was a great challenge as a composer to blend disparate thematic material from sketches written completely separately into cohesive, compelling music that had cohesion and let my compositional voice shine through.

Tanaka Dunbar Ngwara

Thesis: Paivapo ’76: A New Musical

Tanaka:  My thesis was an original musical entitled Paivapo ’76 and set in Domboshava Zimbabwe in 1976, during the Zimbabwean Liberation War. The show deals with the conflict between traditional practice/spirituality and Christianity, and explores themes of community, first love and grief. I received the Alex Adam ’07 Award to conduct research for this project over the summer and since the musical also served as independent work for my theater and music theater certificates, I was able to premiere the piece on May 3rd, 4th and 5th in the Wallace Theater in the Lewis Center Complex.

Thesis: Flung Into Space: A Collection of Songs

Nina:   My thesis is a collection of six songs titled  Flung Into Space . It consists of three story heavy songs about my life, along with an electronic counterpart for each which explores the same topic from a new perspective.

Rupert Peacock

Thesis: John Farrant’s “O Lord Allmighty (ca. 1570):  The English Anthem at Ely Cathedral With Critical Edition

Rupert:  My thesis is a critical edition and history surrounding a piece of unpublished English choral music. The piece is called “O Lord Almighty” by John Farrant. I went to the library at Cambridge University and looked through manuscripts from Ely cathedral, which is about 10 minutes from where I live in the UK. I found lots of great and famous choral works, but stumbled across this piece by Farrant almost by accident. Professor Wendy Heller taught me everything I needed to know to get this done. She’s an expert in critical editions and this kind of research. I couldn’t have done it without her.

Molly Trueman

music thesis titles

Thesis: Angels & Aliens: The Making of an Album

Molly:  For my thesis, I wrote and recorded my debut full-length album entitled  Angels & Aliens . Based around acoustic guitar and vocals, the album has an alternative indie-folk feel. This is a milestone I’ve been working towards for a few years now, so I’m incredibly grateful that this album ended up being my thesis.

Gabriela Veciana

music thesis titles

Thesis: Breaking the Sound Barrier: Investigating Latine Racial Bias Through Reggaetón Music

Gabriela:  For my thesis, I researched colorism within Latine communities through reggaetón music. I knew I was interested in looking at identity and Latin music, but it wasn’t until I heard my advisor, Lisa Margulis, present her work in music cognition that I saw a potential connection with psychology fields.

If you were to describe your thesis in one word, what would it be?

Jared :  Darksided (hehe)

Tanaka:  Fusion

Nina:  Honest

Rupert:  Difficult!

Molly:  Extraterrestrial

Gabriela:  Interdisciplinary!

What advice would you give to future seniors on creating a successful thesis?

Jared:  Don’t be afraid that your thesis isn’t going to materialize in time, instead, always try to remember just why you chose this amazing department, and to remember your likely lifelong personal devotion to music. There’s a lot to love about being able to share your art as the capstone of your work at Princeton.

Tanaka:  If you can, use the thesis as an opportunity to work on something that you’ve always wanted to do, but never had the time to do! It’s amazing to have the excuse of a thesis project to give you the drive and space to complete it.

Nina:  Try to start without judgement. The hardest part of writing my thesis was my own expectations of what my thesis should look like.

Rupert:  It has to be something you care about and/or are passionate about. It got to the point where I was actually looking forward to the next steps in my thesis and enjoyed working on it. That was crucial for motivation!

Molly:  In terms of creating a thesis, my biggest piece of advice is to find a topic that you’re truly passionate about. Don’t settle for something you don’t care about.

Gabriela:  You don’t always have to have a topic and then find an advisor, you can start by finding an advisor you are interested in working with and craft your topic from there.

What are your plans after graduation?

Jared:  Still figuring it out, though I’m certain I want music to be a core component of my everyday life. I am trying to move to Philadelphia and get involved with their variety of music scenes, from DIY punk basement shows to chamber orchestras to early music groups. I also want to continue composing and am eager to hone my craft even further wherever I go.

Tanaka:  I’m going to attend the Royal Academy of Music for Music Theater vocal performance! I’m very excited to be in a new city, and get to do another music degree in a conservatory.

Nina:  I’m moving to Nashville, TN and pursuing a career as a performing musician. I’ll also be releasing music soon as a part of the band Upwhirl, as well as later this year releasing my thesis.

Rupert:  I am going to split my time between singing and construction!

Molly:  After graduation, I’m going to McGill University to study in the Sound Recording program.

Gabriela:  I hope to work in theater administration in New York!

Audition day for MTA's 'Music Under New York' program

WABC logo

NEW YORK CITY (WABC) -- The MTA held its 34th annual auditions for the MTA's Music Under New York program on Wednesday.

The program presents musical performances in the transit system to help entertain commuters and give musicians a new platform.

The auditions took place at Grand Central Madison, at the LIRR Concourse Level, between 46th and 47th streets.

The more than 20 judges made of of music industry executives and fellow performers were seen swaying to the music and enjoying the entrants' performances.

They will be selecting 25 new acts out of the more than 50 finalists to add to the program.

The performers are judged on quality, variety and appeal to the very diverse public that rides the rails every day.

"We've actually played in the subway quite a bit without any official sanctioning I guess, but we love playing in the subway and to be able to do it in an official capacity under the auspices of the MTA would just be awesome," said Julian Maissel, a musician.

"We're all just in the studio one day and I saw how fast they were making beats because we're all self-produced, self-engineered, and I was like, yo, these guys are super fast and they're good," said Sidarth Ayyagari, a musician.

There are many genres for the judges to choose from like Indian funk, folk guitar and harmonica, salsa, reggae, and R &B among others.

Once selected, the musicians are eligible to perform in 40 locations throughout the transit system.

The MTA program started as a pilot back in 1985.
